Teaching a Chin Rest Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
T
here’ll often come a point in your dog’s life when you need him to stay still while something is ‘done’ to him; this could be vaccinations, ear, and eye care, or even grooming. Teaching your pup, a chin rest can be a great way to get him to learn to stay in one position while procedures are underway. There are many ways to train this, the version here is inspired by Pat Koven and teaches the dog to target on cue.
Preparation Have high value soft treats, and make sure you identify a comfortable position and height at which your dog can rest their chin (perhaps placing a rolled- up towel on a chair or similar).
Chin rest onto palm of hand • Hold an open hand palm up just slightly below your dog’s nose. With your other hand hold a treat at the edge of your upturned hand, furthest from your dog’s nose. To encourage your dog to lean forward onto your palm you may have to hold the treat a little further away. • Hold your upturned palm steady and as your dog reaches to get the treat slightly lower the treat so your dog puts his muzzle onto your palm to get nearer to the food. When you feel his chin on your palm say ‘yes’ and gently give him the treat. • Repeat a number of times and start to add a cue like ‘chin’ as your dog rests his muzzle in your palm. • After a number of repetitions now open your palm at chin level, give the cue ‘chin’ and see if your dog performs the muzzle rest. If he does start toggling back and forth with each go, first counting to 1 and rewarding, next to 3, then to 2. Each time give a treat if your dog keeps his muzzle in place.
Move the behaviour onto a towel or other object • In the real world you’ll need both hands to deliver medications or similar. So, you want the dog to station his muzzle onto something and hold still. • Try some soft rolled or folded material to pad the edge of a table or chair. For very small dogs you’ll need a low box. Ensure it is a nice height that is 10 | SE22 - April 2022
comfortable for your dog, without him struggling or straining to rest his muzzle. • Put your upturned palm onto the padding. • Repeat the process of giving the cue and getting your dog to rest his muzzle on your palm. Toggle durations and reward each time. • Now place your upturned palm behind the rolled material, at the edge furthest from your dog’s nose. Repeat your cue- the idea is that the dog stretches his muzzle forward across the rolled padding to reach your palm. As his muzzle skims or rests on the material say ‘yes’ and reward. • Repeat this adding duration slowly, toggling between longer and shorter. You may need to raise or lower the height of the rolled material to make it more accessible. It will help to at first to offer a treat below the level of the rolled material, to encourage the dog to lower his muzzle onto the material. The final stages involve building duration of the chin rest and then slowly adding in ear and eye inspections and appropriate implements. Use of reward is crucial each time. Be patient.

Multi Stem Trees for Urban Gardens
Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
H
owever small your garden, planting at least one tree will help add seasonal interest with blossom or autumnal foliage, height and shade. Multi-stems in particular make a great architectural focal point as a specimen or plant several for more of a woodland feel. The lovely, natural shape is created by cutting the trees right back and leaving them to grow multiple stems. Underplant your multi-stem with grasses such as Hakonechloa macra, en masse or shade lovers such a hellebores, epimedium, brunnera and pulmonaria, combined with bulbs such as crocuses. Naturalistic umbels such as Anthriscus sylvestris look pretty too as do. Here’s our pick:
Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ A lovely deciduous tree has a neat, rounded canopy. It has a long season of interest with clusters of white flowers in late spring and early summer bright red fruit in late summer and fabulous autumn leaves.
Parottia Persica If it’s autumn colour you’re after, this tree is the one to go for, as the leaves turn a breathtaking yellow, then orange and finally fiery red. The bark also makes an attractive feature in winter. It can get fairly big so best for larger gardens.
Betula Birches are a popular as multi-stems. As well as the white-barked Himalayan birch, B. utilis ‘Jacquemontii’, my favourite is the more pinkybarked B. albosinensis ‘Fascination’.
Amelanchier lamarckii This small tree works well as a multi-stem for small gardens as it doesn’t get too big. It has gorgeous white blossom in spring and fab autumn colour.
Prunus serrula A pretty cherry, this looks stunning as a multi-stem with its mahogany peeling bark shining in the winter months. It has small white flowers in the spring and good autumn colour.
Malus ‘Evereste’ 12 | SE22 - April 2022
This is a beautifully shaped small crab apple with excellent spring blossom, good autumn colour, and masses of orange-yellow fruits through the winter.
Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' This pretty spreading tree has stunning bright pink flowers on bare stems in spring followed by stunning deep purple heart-shaped leaves in summer with bronze foliage in autumn.

Watercress Soup Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
W
atercress is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables eaten by humans. It is part of the cabbage family, and is related to garden cress, mustard, radish and wasabi! A 100-gram serving of raw watercress contains 11 calories, being particularly rich in vitamin K, but also significant amounts of vitamin A, C, B6 plus Riboflavin, Calcium and Manganese. In fact, it is really something of a superfood, as research has shown that amongst many other benefits it helps to stop and slow skin ageing, lowers blood pressure, improves eye health, gives you a stronger immune system and improves bone health and density – the list goes on and on! So you can make and enjoy this lovely soup, AND feel virtuous – what’s not to like?! Preparation 20 minutes Cooking time 20 minutes Serves 4
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •
A splash of olive oil 25g butter 1 onion, chopped 1 leek, chopped 1 celery stick, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1.2 ltr chicken or vegetable stock 450g potatoes, peeled and diced 4 bunches of watercress, washed and chopped freshly grated nutmeg black pepper 200ml double cream
Method 1) Heat the butter in a large heavy-based saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, leek and celery and fry gently, stirring, until softened, around 5 minutes, taking care not to let them brown. 2) Add the stock and potatoes and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. 3) Add the watercress and simmer for 2-3 minutes. 14 | SE22 - April 2022
4) Blend the soup in a food processor until smooth. Add the cream and blend. 5) Gently reheat the watercress soup, check the seasoning and serve.

Daydreaming: Magic Minute Inspiration
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
I
t is a question I am getting asked on a regular basis: “How to get more energy? Or how to remain energised throughout the day?” This month I will be giving you a tip on how to get more energy into your day and it may be a surprising one. In fact, it is something that I haven’t talked much about, despite the fact I do it every day. It is the idea of daydreaming, and how a magic minute of mind wandering can boost your energy levels.
Daydreaming: The Good and The Bad For a long time, daydreaming has had a bad reputation and indeed, past studies have stated that a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. There’s a huge amount of pressure on us to stay focused and not get distracted by our thoughts. From an early age, daydreaming is discouraged as our full attention is required for essential learning. Therefore, it’s in our nature to feel stressed when our thoughts are turned away from the task in hand. More recently, however, science suggests that daydreaming can be extremely useful when done correctly.
What is Pleasant Daydreaming? Though the research is young, it’s clear that there is a good and bad way to let your mind wander. Findings show that emotional content can predict your subsequent mood. An easy example of this would be how thinking about a loved one or looking forward to something that is going to happen can make you happy, whereas rumination (replaying negative past experiences) can lead to feelings of depression. Often referred to as intentional daydreaming, thinking for pleasure encourages your brain to relax, helping you to decompress, and reducing levels of stress and anxiety. Pleasant daydreaming also increases productivity by promoting a more abstract thought process, enhancing your creative ability to “think outside the box” when problem-solving. What is going is that the problem-solving part and the creative part of the brain are working in tandem. This allows you to access information that was deeply buried before. 16 | SE22 - April 2022
Learning to Enjoy Thinking If I am between calls, or waiting to start a meeting, I allow my eye drift over to the window, and I daydream. This takes me away from that screen for just a moment to think about something else. I call this a magic minute, a small opportunity for me to relax and refresh my brain. Though I am not completely disconnected from the person I am about to speak to, or my objectives for that call, it is enough to give me that sliver of energy to enhance focus. So, why don’t you try it out: look out of your window, observe what is going on, be present in the moment. It may be once an hour, or just organically, whenever you are in between tasks, or you realise you have got 10 minutes free. This is one small thing that is simple and easy to implement to inject more energy into your day.

Understanding Money Matters Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk
A
ndrew Robertson, Head of Economics at Alleyn’s, tells us why your child is never too young to start developing an understanding of money and how we can go about getting our children thinking about finances. Knowing how finances work is an important part of living as an adult. Eventually, we all need to understand how interest rates, mortgages, credit cards and loans work, so the sooner you can introduce the basic concepts to your child the more confident they will be as they enter adulthood. Of course, you don’t need to talk about compound interest with your toddler, so here is a guide to what to introduce and when:
Pre-schoolers Pre-schoolers will start to develop a concept of money. You can help your child recognise different coins by their colour and shape and introduce the concept of different values, so an ice-cream costs less than a toy. Explain that money is finite and needs to be kept safe.
Infant-aged children Research shows that adults who manage their money well come from families who talked about money, gave their children pocket money for (age appropriate) jobs and some responsibility for spending at a young age. Set up a weekly pocket money allowance and give your child their first money box. Give them different coins within that allowance and help them to add up what they have saved over time. Explain the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ and that saving money helps them to buy the things they want.
Juniors As your child gets older introduce the concept of paying for things without cash, such as with a debit card or using online payments. There are prepaid debit cards, such as GoHenry, which come with an app that can help you track (and control!) what your child is spending. Children as young as six can use these cards and you can adjust the controls to give them more independence as they get older. 22 | SE22 - April 2022
Teenagers Your teenager is likely to have greater – and more costly! – aspirations as they look to the future. You can help them by: Including costs in their regular spending allowance to spend on essentials such as fares and lunches, for example, to encourage more responsibility for their money and to learn how to budget. There are budgeting tools in some of the prepaid card apps to help them, or you can show them how to put their spending onto a spreadsheet! Encouraging them to earn money by getting a part-time job, so that they can have a taste of financial independence. Your teen might begin to be curious about household finances so explain to them, in simple terms, how you manage the finances at home. Finally, have conversations about planning for their future finances, such as university loans or saving for the deposit on their first flat. Managing money is a crucial life skill so start giving your child the tools they will need early!

Financial Matters
With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com
April Is Not All Tears Taylor Swift sung, “September saw a month of tears” in her hit Tim McGraw, but just maybe for UK households she really meant to sing, April 2022 is the month of tears! Why? April 2022 sees the arrival of a combination of financial pain for every household. This pain reads like a catalogue of disasters or simultaneous car crashes. Five key sources of households’ pain starting this month are set out below.
Energy Bill Cap Households are facing the prospects of significant increases in their energy bills. This follows Ofgem, our energy regulator’s announcement that the energy price cap, will increase by 54%. This is the rise in prices that the energy firms will be allowed to charge households. This does beg the question will households enjoy a similar increase in their income? If not, how will households manage? Just in case households forget, the government has announced a support scheme for adversely affected households. However, as with all such schemes, it is a tissue designed to stem a fountain of tears.
National Insurance Contributions Increase National insurance contributions (NIC) are increasing by 1.25% for all employees and the self-employed with earnings over £9,568. The increase is being borne equally by employees and employers. Employees’ main rate class one NIC will increase to 13.25% and the self-employed will see their class four NIC rise to 10.25%. Employers class one NIC will rise to 15.05%. The additional 1.25% is a health and social care levy to raise additional funding for the NHS, therefore this may make the increase more palatable.
Dividend Tax Increase Taxpayers in receipt of dividend income will also experience a 1.25% increase in dividend tax at each of the three rates of dividend tax. The new rates from 6th April will be 8.75%, 33.75% and 39.35%. This is designed to provided equity for income and dividend earners. 24 | SE22 - April 2022
Council Tax Increase Local authorities have been empowered to raise their council tax by 2% for 2022-23 and the next two years without the need to hold a local referendum. In addition, local authorities with care responsibilities may raise a further 1% via the ‘adult social care precept’. This will see the LB Southwark Band D Council Tax increase to £1,595 in 2022-23.
PO Account Switching Tax Credits, Child Benefit and Guardian Allowance clients will no longer be able to use Post Office card accounts from 5th April 2022. HMRC will no longer make payments to Post Office card accounts. HMRC, had advised clients of this deadline last November. Some 145,000 plus clients will be seeking new banking services. Many of these account holders may not find any joy with high street banks, as this may seem to be a luxury of a past era. The April 2022 landscape is not all doom and gloom. There is some good news on the horizon for households.
Universal Credit Universal Credit and sundry benefits are increasing by 3% in April. A single recipient under 25 years old will receive £265.31pw and a couple aged over 35 years old will receive £525.72pw. Attendance allowance lower and higher rates are being increased to £61.85pw and £92.40pw respectively.
National Living Wage The National Living Wage rises by 6.6% in April, to £9.50ph. Similarly, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for an employee aged over 20 years old increases by almost 10%, to £9.18ph.
State Pension The State Pension will only rise by 3% in April following the government’s suspension of the ‘triple lock’ Despite the changing financial landscape for households in April, let’s celebrate the arrival of the spring weather, the start or warmer times and above all have a happy Easter.

Thursday 28 April: Jon Newman: John Ruskin and South London 7pm – 8pm. Join Jon Newman for a fascinating look at John Ruskin and his place in our local history. Jon Newman’s new book, Sunset over Herne Hill, John Ruskin and South London seeks to set the record straight on one of South London’s most important residents. In spite of Ruskin’s national and even international reputation during the Victorian period, and despite ceaseless foreign travel, academic posts at Oxford and work for London museums and galleries – Herne Hill was the place in which he grew up and where he would continue to live into old age. Sunset over Herne Hill explores Ruskin’s local preoccupations: his antipathy to railways, his difficult relationship with the Crystal Palace, his campaign for a Gothic revival in architecture and the enduring importance to him of the natural world. It also looks at the way in which Ruskin has been since commemorated and the creation of Ruskin Park. The book concludes with an examination of the social and historical context of Herne Hill and Denmark Hill in the nineteenth century and the extent to which Ruskin and his family were integrated, or not, within its suburb. Jon Newman is a writer and archivist who both works in and writes about South London. His book River Effra, South London’s Secret Spine was the first comprehensive history of that vanished river and is a perennial Dulwich Books bestseller! ith Spring’s first kiss planting itself on the brows of the Dulwich Hamlet faithful, a sense of optimism hung thick in the Champion Hill air; like the smoke from the fancy kebabs being cooked outside the Tommy Jover toilets. The occasion was a middle March middle of the table clash against south-coast lighthouses Havant and also Waterlooville. Could the Hamlet reboot their faltering season against a team famed for their somewhat agricultural approach to the beautiful game? Well unfortunately not, with the Pink and Blue’s Imperial Guard meeting their Waterlooville on the unforgiving slopes of East Dulwich. While the sides were evenly matched in the early exchanges, Havant and Waterlooville had done their homework on our boys and fielded a side where no player (other than the goalkeeper rather oddly) was less than two metres tall. With local favourite sky-high Danny Mills left inexplicably on the bench, the Hamlet’s largely aerial approach seemed illadvised and unsurprisingly failed to gain much purchase on the game. The Hampshire hightowers left Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury’s car park one-nil victors, drinking fizzy pop and eating Pringles to celebrate. Disappointing for fans though this was, your correspondent was struck by how much the many and sundry dogs that attend Dulwich Hamlet games these days seemed to really (really) enjoy themselves. While many Hamlet hounds wear team colours, it doesn’t appear that poor results on the pitch moderate their muttish merriment. Pats are plentiful. Strokes superabundant. And

there is a steady supply of dropped food which sees our furry friends dementedly licking trampled meat out of the terrace concrete, scurrying around the feet of the assembled throng. Just the kind of thing a dog digs. So if you’ve got a pooch - and who hasn’t these days - why not consider taking it for an afternoon out to Champion Hill. Entrance is free for dogs and they will certainly thank you for it. Meanwhile, Dulwich Hamlet’s women are picking some late season form, which has seen them make the semi-finals of the Capital Senior Cup, while stretching away from the lower reaches of their league. Of particular note was a superb away victory against local rivals Millwall, with Brit Saylor leaping like a freshwater salmon to head home the winner. Eat that with your lemon butter sauce. As you read this the season will be clattering towards its close, with barely a handful of home games left to enjoy. So keep your eyes on the Dulwich Hamlet website: www.pitchero.com/ clubs/dulwichhamlet/ to check out the details of both women’s and men’s games. And while you’re about it, why not head to the Supporters Trust’s site: www.dhst.org.uk to check out the end of season sales. Up the Hamlet!

The Last Word – Matthew Preedy Do you know your neighbours? There’s such a strong sense of support amongst all the local businesses in the area it would be really hard not to!
The most famous person you’ve met? I spent a number of years working in member’s clubs, so I’ve seen a fair few in my time but getting hugged by a slightly inebriated Prince Harry is probably the one that stands out most!
Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee. Kanella’s coffee is as good as I’ve ever had, and I’ll also make a pit stop at Bon’s occasionally as it’s directly across the road from me.
The best meal I’ve ever had.. I could pick any meal from the number of visits I’ve had to Japanese restaurants over the years. If there was one cuisine, I had to choose to eat forever it would be this.
Your favourite place to go for a drink? Dan and his team at The Palmerston always have a cold one waiting for me after work which is only a stone’s throw away. I’m also partial to a pint or two at The Great Exhibition & EDT.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? Matthew is the founder of Vits+Kicks, the latest hospitality addition to the East Dulwich area. After five years of shaking up cocktails across the country as a mobile bar caterer Matthew now brings a deliciously indulgent blend of health, wellness & fun with his first full Vits+Kicks Bar & Restaurant.
How long have you lived in the area?
Even after what feels like a thousand visits during the pandemic I still never tire of a good walk around Dulwich Park. Very beautiful.
When I want to relax… Hot bath. Netflix. Usually at the same time.
Best bargain you’ve ever landed..
I’ve lived on Lordship Lane for nearly seven years now.
Probably an acoustic guitar which I found in a charity shop a good ten years ago and still play to this day.
What brought you here?
My secret ambition..
I was living in Hackney when a friend of mine suggested sharing a flat he’d found in East Dulwich. I instantly fell in love with the area and the decision to move was quickly made.
Aside from moonlighting as a bedroom rock & roll star I quite like the idea of opening a Vits+Kicks somewhere hot and semi-retiring by the beach one day…
What do you most value about the area? I’m very fortunate to have so many quality venues and amenities on my doorstep however, the network of friends and support I’ve received since our initial pop-up with Suzanne James and then the opening of Vits+Kicks has been very special for me. 36 | SE22 - April 2022
