Page 1

Welcome to the January/February issue of SKBramhall & Woodford.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to a bright, new year in 2025. Remember if you bought a real tree this year you can recycle with the Manchester-born charity Just Helping. You can find out the details at www.just-helping.org.uk.

If you love Harry Potter, then you are in for a treat on page 18. Under the Hammer writes about rare Harry Potter books which spark auction frenzy.

I was delighted to attend the fantastic fashion show put on by St Ann’s Hospice at John Lewis which raised much-needed funds for their Build It Together project. Read all about it on page 40.

Whilst we do our best to print all the local events, we sometimes receive them too late to print. So why not follow us on Instagram @skmagazines and keep up to date after the magazines are out.

If you are planning an event and would like us to spread the word, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail with the details.

See you next time.

Business Profile

LIVES UP TO ITS NAME AND PROMISES!

At Connect Care Services, we believe that quality care is not a luxury, but a necessity. Our mission has always been to provide a level of care that truly makes a difference, where each individual is valued, and every need is heard. As a family-run business, we take immense pride in offering personalised care that supports not only the physical, but also the emotional and mental well-being of our clients. This is more than just a business to us—it’s a commitment to delivering care that families can trust, and our clients’ feedback tells us that we are doing exactly that.

One of our client’s sons recently shared his experience on Homecare.co.uk, and it perfectly encapsulates the ethos we strive for at Connect Care:

“Connect Care lives up to its name and promises. We moved to Connect Care Service after meeting the manager, who runs the company. Previous experiences with other care companies have been really negative in every aspect. The manager met with us and reviewed our needs; my mother is 95 years old and

disabled, and provided us with a care plan after assessing our particular situation. It was obvious that the manager actually listened to what our needs were for mom’s wellbeing, in terms of the physical and emotional, and put in place a care schedule that has worked for us. The carers arrive on time and are a lovely team that obviously view their duties as more than just a job. This is a firm that really does care in every sense, from their office staff to the carers, and we are so happy to have their support. It has really taken a lot of pressure off us. These are the professionals.”

We know that consistency, reliability, and genuine compassion can make all the difference, especially in times of vulnerability. Another recent review from a client highlights how lifechanging that care can be:

“I have recently changed to Connect Care in the hope of more consistency of care personnel and better timekeeping. My wife had a catastrophic deterioration in her advanced Parkinson’s as a result of an antibiotic-resistant infection, leaving her unable to move, speak or swallow, and

dependent on a PEG tube for all sustenance. Moving to Connect Care has been an absolute revelation in respect to the level of care which is now being provided. The entire team are upbeat, very friendly, and besides being extremely competent, are just so nice with her, which provokes a good response from my wife, usually with a smile. In turn, this makes me considerably more relaxed about the care my wife is receiving. Everyone on the team is keen to provide general household help, particularly in respite periods, again lifting the pressure on myself. In short, in an extremely difficult time, Connect Care has made a massive difference for both my wife and myself. Carry on the excellent work!” These testimonials reflect not just the high level of care that we provide, but the ethos that runs throughout our organisation—care that is consistent, professional, and delivered with heart.

Care That Should Be the Norm

Sadly, many families experience inconsistent, impersonal care—something we have set out to change. We believe that care, especially for our elderly and vulnerable, should always be delivered with respect, patience, and love. This is the standard we uphold at Connect Care, and we are proud to be raising the bar in domiciliary care services across West Sussex.

A Family-Run Business with Family Values

Being a family-run business allows us to focus on what matters most—our clients. We treat every client as we would a member of our own family, and that personal connection is at the heart of everything we do. From our management team to our carers, every member of the Connect Care family is dedicated to providing the best care possible, and we are always available to listen and respond to the needs of our clients and their families.

At Connect Care, our clients are treated as part of our extended family. We listen, we adapt, and we work together with each family to create personalised care plans that cater to specific needs, whether it’s managing complex conditions like Parkinson’s or simply ensuring that loved ones are comfortable, happy, and well-cared for in their own homes.

We know that trust is earned, and we never take that for granted. Our carers are selected not just for their qualifications but for their compassion, kindness, and dedication. They are the cornerstone of the care we provide, and their commitment to our clients is what truly sets us apart.

In an industry where the word “care” can sometimes lose its meaning, we are determined to make it real again. At Connect Care, we really do care, and that’s something that will never change.

If you or a loved one is in need of care, or if you want to learn more about the services we offer, please get in touch. We’re here to help make life easier, happier, and more comfortable for everyone we support.

WINTER MAINTENANCE Garden Talk

Hello there,

It’s that time of year again when we travel to and from work in the dark – and the winter weather (like every season in the UK) is unpredictable!

I’ve been gardening long enough to see every type of winter weather but the truth is it is very hard to know what each winter will bring.

However, one thing we can all do, whatever the weather, is to make some preventative protection for our plants. Be less tidy

One of the most important and easiest tricks is to be less tidy! This will, I’m sure, delight many readers, but if we are too tidy in winter it exposes the soil and plants to the worst of the winter rain, snow and frost. Leaving the fallen leaves on the ground to decompose and add humus to the soil will give the ground a blanket of protection. Obviously clear the paths of leaves but instead of putting then in the recycle bin, spread then over the roots of the plants.

Delay your pruning

family of garden beneficial hedgehogs using the dry winter stems and leaves for five years now and as much as gardeners hate squirrels they are a great example of a wellbalanced ecological garden, they also eat many garden pests.

Resist the temptation to prune your herbaceous perennial plants in the autumn and leave them until spring. Plan autumn and winter tidying just to remove the broken and untidy stems.

The advantage of March pruning is n winter frost is distributed more evenly around the plants giving them more protection and if we prune too early the frost will come and hit the plants even harder, basically giving the plant a second, unwanted, prune.

n wildlife will benefit from the unpruned seedheads and dry litter. We have had a

In conclusion, I would encourage gardeners to be less tidy in the winter and make March and April your main time for pruning, make it part of your spring clean-up. There is just room to talk about one special plant that is rarely seen but much sort after with garden specialists - the Euonymus. Not the evergreen gold and variegated ground cover Euonymus fortunei, but an upright variety one metre tall, with winter fruit that look like earrings. Euonymus cornutus, Euonymus clivicola or Euonymus ‘Miss Pinky’ (pictured.) will fit into the smallest of gardens, rarely making big shrubs. They are very easy to grow in any moist soil ideally growing with other shrubs and suitable for sun or shade, but the fruit last longer in the shade. They give the most amazing autumn and winter spectacle with loosely hanging orange, red, pink and green fruit. Definitely one to hunt out at specialist nurseries. Happy Winter Gardening!

Just 13 rare Harry Potter books - one won in a raffle - spark auction frenzy

Popularity breeds success and that’s certainly true of Harry Potter. In recent years Hansons has become famous for discovering rare Potter tomes. Together, they’ve achieved more than £1 million under the hammer.

Such has been the success a new saleroom, Rare Book Auctions, launched in 2024 and held the world’s first dedicated Harry Potter Auction. This small, specialist sale saw just 13 of the world’s rarest Harry Potter books - one won in a school raffle 20 years ago - spark a bidding frenzy and record results. Lot 1 alone had 150 watchers!

bought by a mum for her son in 1997 after seeing author JK Rowling interviewed on TV’s Blue Peter. The other, in better condition, was purchased the same year at WHSmith in London.

The books - both pristine and battered copies - were discovered across the UK and Ireland by world-renowned Potter books expert Jim Spencer. Together they achieved a hammer total of £151,720. Bids flooded in from all over the world, estimates were smashed and every lot sold.

The sale included two scarce examples of the most sought after book, first edition hardback copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Only 500 were published in the first Potter print run in 1997. These fabled issues are regarded as the holy grail by collectors. Jim has found 20. They mark the start of the biggestselling book series of all time. Three paperback first editions of the same book were also up for grabs.

International online bidders paid premiuminclusive prices of £80,000 (hammer £64,000) and £45,000 (hammer £36,000) for the holy-grail Philosopher’s Stone hardbacks. The latter was

Meanwhile, two near-fine paperbook first editions of Philosopher’s Stone hammered at £12,000 each, smashing their £8,000 guide. Plus, a well-thumbed example of the same paperback hammered at £6,000 (£800-£1,200 estimate) despite a battered cover. Other results included a record hammer price of £5,500 (estimate £800£1,200) for a cast-signed copy of a 53rd printing paperback of Philosopher’s Stone. Won in circa 2001 in a Midlands school raffle, it was signed by the film’s cast including Daniel Radcliffe [Harry Potter]. In addition, an uncorrected proof copy of Chamber of Secrets fetched £7,000; an uncorrected proof of Prisoner of Azkaban £5,000 and a copy of Deathly Hallows signed ‘To Harry!’ by JK Rowling hammered at £2,600.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX –Some mitigation strategies to consider

One of the expected announcements from the Autumn Budget was the increase in Capital Gains Tax (CGT). CGT is payable when you dispose of an asset (for example, by selling it) for more than you bought it for. The increase in value is subject to CGT. The chancellor hopes to raise £2.5 billion by the increased CGT rates so in the following article, we look at ways of mitigating the amount of CGT you have to pay.

If you sell an asset for less than you bought it for, you may be able to report the loss to HMRC to reduce your taxable gains. When you report a loss, the amount is deducted from any other gains you made in the same tax year. If you don’t have any other gains in the year, you can carry forward the remaining losses to a future tax year. You claim for your loss by including it on your personal tax return, but if you are not registered for Self-Assessment, you can write to HMRC instead. You do not have to report losses straight away - you can claim up to 4 years after the end of the tax year that you disposed of the asset. The important thing to note is that you have to report the loss to be able to offset it against taxable gains.

If you and your spouse or civil partner are living together, any transfer of an asset between you is treated as giving rise to neither a gain nor a loss to the person transferring it. Any amount actually paid is ignored. If the person receiving the asset later disposes of it, they will be treated as if they had paid an amount equal to the total of your costs. This means that the transfer of assets between spouses or civil partners is not subject to CGT. As each spouse or civil partner has a £3,000 annual exemption, transferring a share of an asset to your other half before selling

it can effectively double the annual exemption to £6,000. Furthermore, as CGT rates are dependent on a taxpayer’s income, if one spouse or civil partner is a basic rate taxpayer, while the other is a higher rate taxpayer, it might be useful to transfer the asset to the lower earner to benefit from the reduced rates of CGT.

The above article has touched briefly on some of the potential ways to mitigate the increased CGT rates. There are others which haven’t been touched on such as special reliefs for business assets or the use of stocks and shares ISAs.

There are also various CGT reliefs aimed at investors who are not involved in running a business. The reliefs are; Investors Relief (IR); Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). These reliefs only apply to investments in company shares and they work in different ways with gains either being subject to a lower rate of CGT or being completely exempt. Tread very carefully because these reliefs have associated conditions. It is always advisable to seek professional advice from an accountant or tax advisor to ensure that you are fulfilling your tax obligations correctly whilst making the most of any available tax saving strategies and reliefs.

Club News IAN KIRWAN –COURSE MANAGER

In June, l took post at The Bramhall Golf Club as Course Manager, the first six months holding the reigns have gone to plan. The greenkeeping team have all come on board with my plans and ambitions for the course and are all looking forward to the journey ahead.

The members have been fantastic with me, they’ve really embraced the changes I have implemented, with great feedback coming from not only members, but guests and visitors too.

The club have really supported my ambitions for the course, with investments in new machinery and facilities, plus we also plan to expand the greenkeeping team in 2025.

In these first months I’ve seen how ambitious the club is, with major improvements in both indoor and outdoor practice facilities being completed, and major course improvement projects planned to begin in 2025. As a club we are constantly looking at how we can improve and push the club forward, and this is really refreshing, having been in this industry for almost 25 years, Bramhall Golf Club is definitely the most forward-thinking club I have worked for.

Leaving my previous Course Manager role was tough, as I was really happy where I was, but

moving to Bramhall was for personal progression, and was definitely the right move for me.

In 2025 I will be part of two international tournament prep teams heading to U.S.A. Firstly I will be in California at Pebble Beach Golf Club for the AT&T, then in March I will be in Florida at TPC Sawgrass for The Players Championship. Being part of USPGA tournaments like these help to improve myself as a course manager, and in turn allows me to improve the club I will be representing, The Bramhall Golf Club.

Looking back at my first 6 months at The Bramhall Golf Club is satisfying, looking forward to the next 6 months is more important, with exciting times ahead for the club as we aim to keep chasing our future goals.

NEW YEAR, NEW START FOR YOUR FINANCES

There are lots of ways in which we can reflect on our finances over Christmas and start a new.

The most radical way is to set up in business on your own account. It’s the best thing I ever did but, I will admit, it’s not for everyone.

Incidentally, it took me two years of procrastination to reach this decision. New year, definite decisions would been a useful moto for me.

There is an amount of required financial administration when setting up in business. We can help with this. If you are worried about what tax needs paying when, how to keep your books or help with forecasts just let me know and we can help. Our free no obligation initial meeting should set you off in the right direction. If you are already in business you may want to do some financial planning which is likely to include a plan for the National Insurance and Minimum Wage increases. If your business employs less well paid and or younger people both of these changes will disproportionately effect you with some staff costs going up by well over 20%. That’s a lot, not a cost increase that can be ignored.

There are less radical things you can do, these include:

n Analysing out your spending so you are in control and get the best value from your money. I know it sounds dull but this simple act may transform the fun things you can do.

n Starting a savings plan or a pension plan. Go on, your future self will thank you.

n Creating a plan to get debt free. This is really important, the interest on debt makes people poor and keeps them working in jobs they don’t like. Create your escape plan from the system.

As the New Year starts the financial year draws to a close and as it does that you might want to consider some tax planning. This may include using your ISA allowance, using your pension allowance, gifting to avoid inheritance tax and considering your capital gains tax position.

If you want to go through any of the items I have noted for an independent opinion, please get in touch. I offer free no obligation initial consultations where I hope to help you.

SCANDI INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

Practical, minimalist (an illusion of tidiness) and the epitome of longevity, Scandinavian design has been gracing our UK homes for years and it isn’t going anywhere. It’s just so easy to live with, keeping lines simple, colours neutral, layers of soft furnishings and wood, lots of light wood to give depth and texture.

I have a few tips up my woolly sleeve to share that work to create the Scandi vibe in every room. Whites, creams and lighter, earthy tones are the backdrop to the room. You can then add accessories in darker tones to bring layers of texture and warmth, pop in some light wood furniture, warm lights with candles and orangey tone bulbs, and you can practically hear that hot tub calling!

it feeling too solid and cold. Add towels a few tones darker than the wall or the floor, a gorgeous light to tie in and you’ll be pouring a glass of bubbly to enjoy whilst relaxing in your fragrant eucalyptus bubble bath.

The bedroom works well with layers of throws and cushions in varying shades of darker neutrals. Nothing regimented, it wants to look like it’s been thrown there after sitting outside with a warm blanket and hot chocolate. Keep the curtains long and light, along with most of the walls and floor, choose an oversized light perhaps in a neutral felt, then wood. You can use timber bedside tables or a simple stool or crate to add a Scandi light to.

The bathroom with extra hard surfaces works really well if you use tiles that have varying tones to bounce the light around, preventing

The kitchen here uses the classic Scandinavian shaped furniture as the focal point, with a very light and chalky green kitchen door. This would also be stunning in a light terracotta, or cream whilst adding some light colour to the walls. Spot the wood furniture to soften the look again, alternatively, timber shelves or some top cupboards in timber for extra storage. Add rattan baskets for storage and

decorate with dried flowers in stone vases –works in every space.

For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.

Orzo with tomatoes and Feta.

It’s January and for some that may mean Veganuary but for me it means just trying to cut down on meat. So with that in mind I wanted to find a recipe that was very easy but also very delicious and comforting for the dark winter nights. I hope you enjoy it.

Orzo with tomatoes and Feta.

Serves 4

4 red onions peeled and cut into wedges

1 red chilli

1 red pepper deseeded and chopped

1 head of garlic cut across the middle

Olive oil

and then roast in the oven for 20 mins until the onions are cooked and the peppers are beginning to char.

1 400g tin of plum tomatoes

1 tsp of nigella seeds

1 tsp of coriander seeds – crushed in a pestle and mortar

250 g orzo

200g feta (or vegan feta)

15g coriander – leaves picked

15g flat leaf parsley – leaves picked

1 tbsp of pine nuts – toasted briefly in a dry pan.

Preheat the oven to 220c or 200c fan

In a deep sided pan put the onion, whole chilli, red pepper and garlic. Drizzle with olive oil

Drain the tin of tomatoes, keep the juice , and put the tomatoes in with the onions etc. Sprinkle over the nigella and crushed coriander seeds then put back into the oven for another 20 minutes or so to let everything cook down and intensify.

Then take the tray out of the oven and take the garlic, squeeze out the cooked cloves then throw away the skins.

With a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon break up the tomatoes and mash everything around a bit.

Put the juice from the tomatoes into a measuring jug and add freshly boiled water until you have 800ml of liquid. Add the watery juices to the tray with the orzo, stir to spread it around and then dot with the feta. Back into the oven for 15 minutes (stir it a bit halfway through) until the orzo is cooked.

Take it out of the oven and sprinkle the dish with the coriander leaves, parsley leaves and the toasted pine nuts.

MEMORIES ARE POWERFUL FAMILY POSSESSIONS

Over the last 10 years I have had the privilege of getting to know some of our clients and meet their family members. One of the most enjoyable aspects for me is hearing about the interesting and varied lives they have led and their life experiences that helped shape the people they are today. We will often help clients, together with their families to create memory books. This is a book filled with personalised mementos, photographs and stories that document the life and memories of an individual.

A memory book is a wonderful way to share someone’s life journey and history. It also helps them, their family and friends remember all their milestones, key events and life experiences. A memory book can also be used during a time of reflection to encourage positive thoughts if someone is unwell or had a life changing diagnosis. If someone has passed, the book can help mourners to process loss by reminding them of happier times and help find solace in cherished memories. Keeping the memories of our loved ones alive can help us to feel connected to that special person and can inspire us in our daily lives. This is true of the memories of those who are still with us but live far away, and for those who have passed.

Preserving family history is also a way of keeping the memories alive of someone who is no longer with us. I was reminded of this recently when, Julie, a much-valued member of our care team, told me about a heartfelt journey that she

had been hoping to take for some time. Julie recently made the journey to Bouzincourt cemetery, near Albert, France. This is where her great-grandfather Thomas Hazlehurst is buried. Thomas was killed at the Battle of the Somme on 3rd July 1916, he was 30 years old. This emotional trip has helped Julie deepen her connection to her great-grandfather; by honouring his story, it has provided her a sense of belonging and help bridge the gap between generations.

Memories truly are powerful family possessions; we should treasure them.

History of Bouzincourt

Bouzincourt was used as a field ambulance station from early in 1916 to February 1917, when the Allied line went forward from the Ancre. It was in German hands for a few days in the spring of 1918. BOUZINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY was used for burials from March to July 1916 and again from April to June 1918; it contains 33 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

Community news

S.T.N.A.

We’re like a secret organisation. Lots of people don’t even know about us and yet we’re a free service for the Visually Impaired in Stockport. And, every Wednesday, through the entire year volunteers pop in to Walthew House in Shaw Heath, to the little recording studio,

This is where local people are interviewed for the audio magazine: pickle ball champion, mural maker, orchestra conductor, footballer – the variety is huge. What’s on in Stockport, a guide to local pubs, crosswords, historical items, book reviews.

Wednesday evening is studio time. Four volunteers sneak in the side door and take their seats by a microphone. The recording engineer gives the thumbs up and off they go – a weekly hour’s worth of local news.

All the recordings are transferred to a

memory stick, copies are made and the mail team sort everything into yellow wallets. The rest is up to the Royal Mail.

Over a hundred visually impaired listeners get three hours’ worth of information and entertainment – FREE.

But we’d love to have more listeners and you could help.

If you know someone, of any age, who’s visually impaired and they live in Stockport and you think they’d like our service, please, tell them about us.

They’ll get an mp3 player and a weekly memory stick – AND IT’S ALL FREE.

We’ve been going since the 1970s and we want to reach out and expand. If you can, please help. We have a website and a Facebook page and Walthew House can pass on any messages.

Charity News BUILD IT TOGETHER

Staff and volunteers of St Ann’s Hospice took time away from their busy days to strut their stuff at this year’s John Lewis Fashion Show!

The fashion show was organised by the St Ann’s Hospice Fundraising Team with help from John Lewis, Cheadle, with

all proceeds going towards the hospice’s Build it Together Appeal.

St Ann’s Hospice Build It Together is an appeal to raise much needed funds for the delivery of a new hospice site based in Heald Green.

The runway played host to staff and volunteers from different departments throughout the hospice from kitchen staff, fundraising staff, the Rehab Team and even a few children showed off their best style.

Community Fundraiser for St Ann’s Hospice, Julie Peters said the sold-out event was a “phenomenal success”.

“It was great to once again be back at John Lewis, Cheadle for this year’s fashion show. Those who came out in support have helped us raise

approximately £4,000 and for that I can’t thank them enough. I would also like to thank John Lewis, Cheadle once again for their hospitality this year,” Greg said.

So far, St Ann’s Hospice, with the help of supporters, volunteers and the local community in Greater Manchester have raised almost £1,400,000 out of £2,000,000 for the Build it Together Appeal. The hospice is making a big push to raise the final £600,000 to oversee the continued construction of the new building.

Mindset Advice ARE YOU A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON?

Are you a Highly Sensitive Person?

A ‘Highly Sensitive Person’ (HSP), is a personality type identified by Dr Elaine Aron in her research which began in 1991. It is not simply someone who feels that they are “sensitive”. The questionnaire to determine someone’s sensitivity can be found on her website here ( https://hsperson.com ).

Generally, a HSP will be more aware of subtleties in their environment and in the moods and needs of others, and will care more about others judgment of them. They can be more bothered by high levels of stimulation such as crowds or loud noises around them and they are usually very thoughtful and observant, often needing time alone to process their thoughts and feelings. On average, for every 5 people who read this, one of you will be highly sensitive.

Why is this the case?

Firstly, because the world is not structured to suit the minority in any category. Full disabled access to schools and workplaces is still not available as standard in the UK, so it is hardly a surprise that the world isn’t structured to suit the HSPs.

Secondly, the COVID-19 pandemic left many HSPs traumatised due to the restrictions, uncertainty and changes that occurred with little warning. In its wake, many aspects of the “normal’ world have not returned in the same format. Schools involve much more screen time, working from home as adults is commonplace, (so people are more isolated), everything costs more, NHS waiting lists are as long as they have ever been, and there have been two new and serious wars, both of which are ongoing.

It is important to point out at this stage that being a HSP is not a negative thing, it is simply a personality type, and many people who learn how to understand and harness their sensitivity will thrive.

But why am I talking about this?

I work predominantly in the mental health sector, and since 2020, I have noticed that a large majority of my clients are HSP, despite HSP making up only 20% of the population. This leads to the obvious conclusion that HSP may need more support to thrive in the modern world, and that this has worsened as the modern world has become increasingly complex and overwhelming in the last few years.

In 2010, Dr Aron herself found that that 50% of people seeking support with mental health are HSP. Based on my experience since 2020 however, I would say it could be as high as 80%.

HSPs depend on structure, stability and routine, uncertainty is the enemy. The world feels increasingly uncertain and unpredictable right now, so HSPs will be feeling the impact of this. Unfair as this seems, society simply will not address this situation, and it is down to the individuals to seek further knowledge and help to enable themselves to thrive.

I would recommend that all readers of this article take the questionnaire on Dr Aron’s website, and if you find that you are a HSP, then explore the resources on there as a starting point to learning how to understand yourself and optimise your life.

DON’T ENDURE WINTER – ENJOY IT.

Take time to live well this Winter. Don’t write the season off bracing yourself to endure winter while you wait for Spring. Winter is not all about darkness and cold weather, telling ourselves we shouldn’t eat this or do that. Winter is a period of hibernation, an invitation to slow down and move from resisting the season to making the most of this time of year to prepare for the Spring. We might not be designed to retreat into a full hibernating slumber but our bodies benefit from a period of dormancy…or at least a little slowing of the pace. Wellness, in all respects, springs from winter’s rest.

and manipulation of muscles not only alleviate stress but also play a pivotal role in reducing inflammation, a common culprit during colder seasons.

Additionally, massage therapy stimulates blood circulation, promoting oxygen flow to tissues, and expediting the removal of toxins. This enhanced circulation contributes to better immune function, which is crucial for warding off seasonal illnesses.

For many people, the winter months are more difficult to get through than other times of the year. With shorter days, less sunlight, colder temperatures, inclement weather and less social interaction, winter brings unique physical and emotional challenges. As the cold weather sets in, many of us grapple with aches & pains, dry skin, low mood and lethargy.

Do you know regular massage therapy can be a game-changer during these colder months?

The benefits of massage in the winter are numerous and impactful. From improving blood circulation and boosting immune responses to enhancing mental health and skin condition, regular massage therapy can be a powerful tool in your winter wellness toolbox. By understanding and harnessing its benefits, we not only weather the winter more gracefully but also emerge with a renewed sense of vitality and resilience. This winter, take time to live well, prioritise your whole health and embrace the season’s opportunity to rest, recharge and reinvigorate in readiness for the Spring. Enjoy itdon’t Endure it!.

PILATES CAN HELP YOU KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

As the calendar ticks over for another year, you may have recently set resolutions to guide your new year with purpose. While enthusiasm is high, making resolutions that last beyond that initial spark of motivation can be challenging. If you’re tired of the cycle of cheerfully setting and quickly abandoning your resolutions, what you need is a fun way of exercising that will ultimately help you achieve your goals.

Let’s explore how embracing some of the principles we follow in Pilates can unlock your full potential this year and help ensure you have resolutions worth keeping.

Concentration

the control and flow of the movements that are supposed to be taking place throughout the exercise.

Pilates requires constant awareness of the movement process. You must be mindful of your body and its movements, otherwise you cease to learn, you just ‘do’.

Relaxation

Focusing on releasing areas of tension within the body before and during each exercise is important as it allows constructive change to occur. Relaxation of overactive muscles through conscious and controlled mobilisation forms a key part of Pilates exercise, thus enabling less active muscles to be recruited and developed.

Alignment

Alignment is the key to stability and correct posture. Maintaining good posture and body awareness encourages the desired muscles to work efficiently.

Breathing

Learning how to breathe properly strengthens the diaphragm which contributes to the relaxation of the psoas (hip flexor muscles) whilst simultaneously activating the core and pelvic floor muscles.

Centering (core stability)

Centering is a dynamic process which relates directly to both the challenge of limiting any unwanted movements as well as maintaining

Co-ordination

Functional movement patterns are taught to encourage precision and control. As exercise levels progress the complexity of the movement sequence increases. Co-ordination is excellent mental and physical training.

Flowing movements

Flowing movement provides part of the uniqueness to the Pilates Method. A focus on controlled, graceful and yet dynamic movement should be at the core of each movement. If all the other principles are considered and interrelated then flowing movement should occur as a result.

Stamina

Pilates builds endurance by ensuring the body is used efficiently. Muscles begin to work more functionally as energy will no longer be wasted and stamina will develop.

Surrounding yourself with a supportive community can be the key to keeping your sights on your goals. Sharing your resolutions with a supportive community that encourages and celebrates your progress will feel rewarding and encourage more motivation.

So don’t delay join a group Pilates classes today to help support your New Year goals and a more fulfilling year ahead.

New Year, New You!

Cheadle Hulme Dental & Cosmetics are committed to looking after your oral health, and preventing dental problems transforming into bigger issues. They have had another successful year, winning multiple awards for their provision of high-end patient care, treatment of nervous patients and their ability to perform incredible aesthetic treatments. They have also won awards for their website being educational and informative, and the practice owner and Clinical Director won the award for Best Practice Principal in the North of England. These accolades have led to an incredible reputation in the area for looking after patients, and a great confidence in patients who are choosing them for their dental work, and signing up to their membership plans.

The New Year is a great time to detox, make resolutions and have a fresh start. So why not make 2025 the year that you commit to an improved oral health routine? Good dental hygiene practices include 2 hygiene visits and 2 check-ups with a dentist every

year, and although improved dental care isn’t usually high up on people’s lists of New Year’s resolutions, Cheadle Hulme Dental believe it should be.

That’s why they offer membership packages from just £16 per month which includes the 4 routine visits every year, plus 20% off treatments. Subscribing to this will save you money as well as ensuring you attend your essential routine appointments. However, it is not necessary to be part of a plan. You can book in anytime for routine or cosmetic treatments, as they offer high end dentistry in their beautiful clinic on an ad-hoc basis too, you don’t even need to be registered with them. Appointments can be arranged quickly and are available late evenings and Saturdays.

Contact them to find out more, or visit them for a complementary consultation and make 2025 the year you make your dental health top priority and part of your New Year’s resolutions list!
