Welcome to the April / May issue of SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle
As I write we have had a lovely spell of sunny weather. Remember the clocks spring forward on Sunday 30th March. The Eric Morecombe Auction featured in Under the Hammer might bring a little sunshine into your day! See page 14 for details.
This month’s Event Spotlight covers the Easter activities at Jodrell Bank on page 22. They do fantastic events, some of which I have volunteered at!
Santa’s Tour of Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme has been a tradition for over 50 years in the weeks leading up to Christmas BUT the streets of Bramhall, Woodford and Cheadle Hulme may never be the same again. The Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club have been in touch, read the full details on page 28.
Whilst we do our best to print all the local events, we sometimes receive them too late to print. So why not follow us on Instagram @skmagazines and keep up to date after the magazines are out.
If you are planning an event and would like us to spread the word, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail with the details.
See you next time.

Record-Breaking Bids at The Incredible Eric Morecambe Collection Auction
The long-anticipated Eric Morecambe Collection Auction took place at the Burton Albion Pirelli Stadium on the 10th and 11th January 2025. Hosted by Hansons Auctioneers, the event showcased an incredible range of memorabilia from the legendary comedian’s life and career, exceeding all expectations. Auctioneers Charles Hanson, Charlie Ross, and Rob Oulton guided an enthusiastic crowd of inperson bidders and a recordbreaking online audience eager to acquire a piece of television history.
The auction raised over half a million pounds, with collectors from around the world competing for pieces of Morecambe’s legacy. The sale was a testament to the comedian’s enduring popularity and cultural impact, from his personal items to iconic works of art.
Among the most notable lots were Eric’s iconic glasses, which fetched a staggering £20,000, far exceeding their estimated range of £2,000 to £4,000. The glasses, coupled with Morecambe’s Barling briar pipe and black-and-white photographs, were purchased by pop star Robbie Williams, who expressed a deep emotional connection to the comedian. The sale underscored the lasting sentimental value of Eric’s personal items.
Another highlight was Lot 476, a 1978 portrait of Eric Morecambe painted by Richard Stone. The oil on canvas, capturing Morecambe’s laidback charm, sold for an impressive £15,000. The portrait had been previously exhibited in London, adding to its appeal among collectors. Fans also had the chance to bid on items from Morecambe’s career, such as his tailcoat and trousers from The Morecambe and Wise Show (Lot 249), which sold for £4,500. A vintage Luton Town tracksuit with “Eric” stitched on the back (Lot 420) also garnered attention, selling for £5,500.
Auctioneer Charles Hanson reflected on the success, saying, “We were thrilled with the extraordinary results. Eric Morecambe’s legacy lives on in the hearts of millions, and the prices reflect the deep affection fans continue to hold for him. It was an incredible two days!”
For fans and collectors, the auction was not only a financial success but also a poignant celebration of Morecambe’s genius, with each lot serving as a lasting tribute to one of Britain’s most beloved comedians.

THE BENEFITS OF COMPANIONSHIP SUPPORT
There are generally three core areas of home care and support, these are Companionship, Home Help and Personal Care. When we first meet a potential client the support, we often discuss and first introduce is Companionship. It is fair to say that not everyone fully embraces having home support initially, and that is understandable. Having home support in some ways is an acknowledgement that a person’s situation and circumstances have changed and that can be difficult and hard to come to terms with. However, once a routine and a relationship are established it can have a positive impact on an individual’s life.
to build a person’s confidence, feel less lonely and more connected with their local community.
Personally, I have never really felt that the word Companionship translates well in this setting, but as neither I nor the whole sector has come up with anything more appropriate, we’ll stick with it. If we express, it fully as ‘the enjoyment of spending time with other people’ then it feels more useful. It is important to state that we are not seeking to build or force friendships the aim is to improve a person’s general wellbeing. Staying connected to others can create a sense of purpose and more positive mindset. Social connections are said to have a positive impact on our physical health too. Clients and family members regularly comment on how quickly they notice an improvement in mood, a feeling of being more contented. This can come from just knowing that there is a regular visitor, building a new relationship and not having long periods of isolation. This type of support can also help
There are many other benefits to Companionship support, clients find they are more easily able to re-engage with hobbies and activities they used to take part in. It could be something as simple as going out for a walk, lunch at the golf club, choir practice or a shopping trip. Most companies who provide home care and support will also be able to arrange accompanied visits to see doctors and for hospital appointments. Visits should always be tailored to the needs of the individual and have the flexibility to be extended if necessary to accommodate the nature of the visit or appointment.
For family members Companionship support for their loved one provides them with peace of mind and can help facilitate communication through phone calls or video chats, especially important if they do not live close by.
Ultimately Companionship support will help maintain independence and enrich daily life.

BRAMHALL BANKING HUB:
A Year of Supporting the Community
Bramhall Banking Hub opened in the Village Square in April last year. Next month the first hub in Greater Manchester will mark 12 months of helping 1000’s of customers access cash and face to face banking locally.
For Banking Hub Operator, Naz Hudda, this isn’t just a chance to celebrate with customers who’ve come to rely on the hub in the last year. It’s also an opportunity to spread the word about what the hub has to offer anyone yet to visit.
“Every day, we hear how much of a difference we’re making to people’s day-to-day lives. Cash remains critically important to lots of people in the SK area. Lots of customers tell us they don’t feel confident using online banking, don’t have reliable broadband or mobile coverage or simply can’t travel to access wider banking services,” he says.
“When it comes to something as sensitive as their finances, people really appreciate the personal touch too. Talking face to face makes such a difference.
“If you haven’t visited the hub yet, do please drop by. You’ll get a very warm welcome and we’d be more than happy to show you how we can help make life a little easier,” he adds.
Customers of all major banks can visit the Village Square hub to carry out regular cash transactions at the counter, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm.
The counter is operated by the Post Office. Whoever you bank with, this offers face-to-face services such as paying in cash and cheques, making withdrawals, balance enquiries, paying utility bills and topping up gas and electricity accounts whenever the hub is open.
A community banker is also available in the hub one day a week on a rota to talk with customers about more specific or complicated matters. You don’t need to make an appointment to speak to them. These are the days, open from 9am to 5pm.
Monday: NatWest
Tuesday: Barclays
Wednesday: Santander
Thursday: Lloyds
Friday: Halifax
The counter remains open to everyone, whichever community banker is available on a particular day.
Banking hubs are delivered by Cash Access UK, a not-for-profit company funded by major banks. Their work is part of a collective approach to protecting access to cash. They provide shared services in communities where they are needed most.
As Bramhall banking hub celebrates its first anniversary, its benefits are clear to individuals and the community. If you haven’t visited yet, now is the perfect time to drop in and discover how the hub can help you.
Monthly Implant Open Days at Cheadle Hulme Dental & Cosmetics
SAVE £680 ON THIS TRANSFORMATIVE TREATMENT
Dental implants offer a fixed solution for missing or failing teeth. Unlike dentures, they feel just like your own teeth and as they are not removable, they give patients the freedom to enjoy foods that are difficult to eat when wearing dentures.
A dental implant is a titanium post that acts as a prosthetic tooth root surgically placed into the jawbone. We use medical-grade titanium because it’s strong and light, but also because it has the ability to fuse with living bone.
Once the implant has fused with the surrounding bone tissue, it can be used as a foundation for a replacement tooth secured to the top of the dental implant. It can also support multiple implants such as bridges or dentures. Implants can be used to replace all of a patient’s missing or failing teeth in what we call an all-on-four procedure where patients have all their teeth removed and replaced with implants the very same day, giving them a ‘same day smile’ where they walk away with a brand-new smile, in just one day.
For natural-looking and secure replacement teeth, patients visit us for dental implants from near and far. After the implants are placed, patients find that their eating and speaking ability has improved significantly, along with their confidence to smile again. That’s why dental implants are the gold standard for missing teeth replacement.
If you book in for your initial consultation for implants on one of our Implant Open Days then you will save £680 on this life changing treatment. Please contact us for further information on this.
As you can see, dental implants significantly improve the appearance and functionality of a person’s smile, and can even take years off their appearance. BEFORE AFTER

SCAN HERE TO TAKE A FLYING TOUR OF OUR PRACTICE
LET’S TALK ABOUT ROSES Garden Talk
Thirty five years ago, I started my career in horticulture as an apprentice rose budder (grower.) The entire spring and summer was spent crouched over, resting my elbows on my bent knees, budding a stock rose onto a rootstock. In the late summer, as our newly budded roses took hold, we were greeted by hectares of flowering roses and the scent was magical. These days, whenever I smell roses, I’m transported back 35 years.
With 30 varieties of roses to choose from, how do you make a decision on what to buy? It would be unfair to pick my favourite roses but instead, in this short article, let’s highlight the groups. All the major rose growers produce a free catalogue and usually with a phone call they will happily send you their latest edition. These days you can see all this online, but personally I still like a hard copy that I can flick through.
The rose groups are:
roses. They vary in size from 1 to 4 metre high shrubs and can have small single flowers with amazing scarlet autumn fruits or large, highly perfumed, perpetual flowers. The perfume can vary from rose to rose and I do recommend visiting a local rose nursery in the summer to smell the different fragrances. I love the scent of Rose Crown Princess Margret but some friends say they can’t smell anything!
There are also Patio roses which grow in pots and need almost no pruning and Groundcover roses which should need no explanation. The Climbing roses are just budded onto faster growing roots so you can have Hybrid Tea, Floribunda or shrub roses but just on faster growing roots for climbing over walls and arches.
Hybrid Teas - these are usually highly perfumed with large individual flowers, excellent for cutting for the house with long, strong stems. The Modern Hybrid Teas and newer varieties with similar flowers are not generally quite so perfumed.
Floribunda roses have numerous smaller flowers, scented but held in clusters of flowers on shorter flowering stems. These also make good cut flowers but tend to petal drop quicker than the Hybrid Tea roses.
Shrub roses are split into at least eighteen further groups and it’s too big a subject to deal with here. These all make magnificent garden plants and I can’t think of ever designing a large garden without including many different shrub
Remember that all roses need a rich soil, which means you need to feed at least once a year in March with a rose feed. Failure to do this will result in poor undersize flowers and slow, short flower stems during the growing season. Roses will grow in pots or any moisture retentive soil that is exposed to at least four hours of sunshine daily.
Whichever rose you choose they are all attention grabbing, beautiful flowering plants.

APPEAL: - SANTAS TOUR OF BRAMHALL & CHEADLE HULME 2025
This has been a tradition for over 50 years in the weeks leading up to Christmas BUT the streets of Bramhall, Woodford and Cheadle Hulme may never be the same again. The Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club desperately want to keep this tradition alive but cannot do so without acquiring a new float. So, the Club need the help of you, our wonderful community, to keep the magic of Christmas alive for generations of children to come.
charities and good causes benefit from the visit of Santa to the area.
Sadly, Santa’s float is very old and is causing problems. It is feared that it will soon be beyond repair. The Club need to raise £30,000 to buy a new one and ensure that the magic and this iconic tradition survives. We are confident that with your help we can do it. Every donation, no matter how much, will help us to bring Santa to you safely and in great style in the years to come.
Our float has been bringing Santa to visit children on their own doorsteps for over 50 years. Santa’s Tour of Bramhall Cheadle Hulme and Woodford marks the start of Christmas for everyone - children, their parents, grandparents, perhaps even great grandparents, have looked at the Float in awe and been excited by the sight of Santa on his sleigh. And every year sixteen

LOUNGE DECONSTRUCTION
Whilst the kitchen can be the busy hub of the house, the lounge is the heart of most homes. So incorporating cosy and comfortable looks into the design is crucial to making your home a warming and welcoming space where you, your family and your guests will feel relaxed and at ease. I’ve picked out a few items from the overall look, showing how they work for this gorgeous relaxed, yet luxurious scheme.
the room, copy this with branches from a lovely, large, neutral pot vase.
Table lamps, two is the magic number. They can sit each side of a console table, or are just as effective at opposite corners of the room.
I’ve chosen lamps with a darker, ergonomic pattern to bring a more modern look. Ambient lighting is so important to prevent a stark feel. If you like to use a showstopping main light, think about changing it to a dimmer switch (and bulbs!) and dim that brightness as you relax. Floor lights work really well too, and a mirror to bounce the warm light around the space. Timber brings a warmth and textured feel to a room, imagine replacing that wooden coffee table pictured here for a glass one, it would feel much more formal. The wood brings nature into
I’ve picked a colour palette of a chalky blue as the main furniture item, with soft beiges for accent colours in the lamps, rug, cushions and curtains, and a stronger green for the walls. This keeps it cosy and warm feeling. A beige wall could be the ‘safe’ choice, but it would be colder and you’d need more textiles to layer it enough to get the cosy feel. The green complements the blue of the sofa, elevating it to more thorough scheme. For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is around the corner – and it’s scary !
The Labour government has confirmed that Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (or MTD for Income Tax), will be going ahead from 6th April 2026 – in just over a year’s time. This is an item from the Autumn 2024 budget which didn’t grab the headlines despite the fact that it is expected to be one of the most significant changes to the UK tax system since the introduction of selfassessment in 1995!!
So, what will MTD for Income Tax look like? The first requirement is that records of income and expenses will need to be kept digitally (eg by the use of spreadsheets or software packages), and submissions to HMRC must be made directly from those digital records. The date, amount and category of each expense needs to be recorded. Then, each quarter a ‘quarterly update’ will need to be submitted to HMRC just over a month after each quarterend. There will then be a final year-end return due by 31st January. So, instead of the annual self-assessment return due each 31 January, affected taxpayers will have to submit five returns a year instead of one – an administrative headache for taxpayers and their accountants!
Who is going to be affected by these requirements? If you are self-employed or a landlord and have business or property income over £20,000 then you will be subject to MTD for Income Tax, though your start date for MTD for Income Tax will vary based on the level of your income. Those with business or property income over £50,000 will be the first affected from 6th April 2026. It is important to note that the ‘income’ figure and not ‘profit’ figure
will be used to work out whether you will be affected. HMRC will use the data from the 2024/2025 personal tax returns to work out who needs to sign up for MTD, though the individual taxpayer will have to register themselves – HMRC won’t be registering you automatically.
There are a limited number of exemptions form MTD for Income Tax. The main exemption applies to those who are digitally excluded. This could be, for example, where you live in an area with poor internet access. This exemption won’t apply automatically so you will need to write to HMRC to explain your circumstances and how they prevent you from keeping records digitally.
Because of the numerous delays to the rollout, the publicity around MTD for Income Tax has been low key. However, given that the first phase of the introduction of MTD for Income Tax is just over a year away, we can expect a lot more awareness campaigns in the months ahead. If you are going to be affected, now is the time to start thinking about how you are going to start keeping your records digitally and submit them to HMRC. Your accountant should be able to advise how these changes may impact you.

Charity News BUILD IT TOGETHER UPDATE: ST ANN’S NEW HOSPICE TAKING SHAPE
St Ann’s Hospice invites you to a Build it Together update – progress on our new hospice construction site is on track and we are so excited to see our vision for a modern purpose-built hospice taking shape.
It has been an incredible journey to get to this point in our vision for a new hospice in Heald Green. Our community has been with us every step of the way – raising money, rooting for us to achieve our goal of a purpose-built, modern building to care for our patients long into the future.
We started our Build it Together fundraising campaign in an overgrown field next to our current hospice, and we asked you all to believe in our vision that we could transform this bramble-filled space into a world-class facility. Fast forward to today and you have made it happen – a huge steel structure has been created that will become our Being You Centre for outpatients, and the 21 individual private inpatient bedrooms opening out on to a sun trap of a courtyard garden have been constructed. Come along for a chance to see the progress for yourself and meet key members of the project team. You will also be able to look at the plans, see some of the concepts for the interior design, and hear about the latest fundraising efforts.

SATURDAY 17TH - SATURDAY 24TH MAY: SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
7.45pm. (Note that there are 2 performances on Saturday 24th May:- the matinee at 2:30pm and the evening performance at 7:45pm). Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, adapted by Jessica Swale. Jane Austen’s classic romantic comedy dates from the Regency period (early 19th century) and centres on Elinor, Marianne and Margaret, daughters of Mrs Dashwood, who are forced after the death of their father to leave their comfortable Sussex home because it is to pass to their only male relative, John Dashwood, and his snobbish wife Fanny. They move to a cottage in Devon owned by their wealthy cousin Sir John, who lives nearby with his good-natured, talkative mother-in-law, Mrs Jennings. Marianne falls in love with the dashing Willoughby, ignoring the attentions of Sir John’s more modest

friend, Colonel Brandon. Elinor hoped she was winning the affections of Edward Ferrars, Fanny’s brother, whilst she was in Sussex, but finds her future happiness under threat from Fanny’s determination he should marry into a rich family. Poor Elinor suffers further heartbreak when she later learns that he is apparently already secretly engaged to Mrs Jennings’s niece, Lucy Steele. HOW TO BE YOURSELF, THE CHINESE MEDICINE WAY
“We come complete with one true note we were destined to sing” The Art of Being Yourself by Caroline McHugh
How often do you hear people say, ‘Just be yourself’ or ‘You do you’? The importance of authenticity and personal integrity is ingrained in our modern consciousness and popular culture.
But this is nothing new; the concept can be traced back through the mists of time to Chinese Daoist philosophy. Daoist’s believed that we all have a ‘Dao’ or path in life that we are born onto. Influences in our lives, peers, parenting, traumas, life experiences, all lead us to stray from the path and from the life that we are intended to lead. It is by being true to ourselves and listening to our authentic inner selves, that we can make our way back onto that path and our lives can start to ‘flow’ again.
But it is very hard, in our noisy world of competing influences and boundless stimulation to hear that quiet, still voice. We desperately want to feel comfortable in our own skins but it is often difficult to know just who we are. When we are able to just stop the world from spinning and get off, for just one moment; when we can still our thoughts, cease desiring things or wanting to be different, then in that moment, we can be entirely ourselves. As Lao Tzu said in the Daoist text, the Tao Te Ching
“When there is no desire, all things are at peace.”
One of the best resources we have for this is just outside our door, in nature. If we can go for a walk and really, truly focus on what is around us, we can let go of all the worries, fear and thoughts that are clouding our senses. Five element acupuncture offers another way in which we can recapture our sense of self. According to this ancient Daoist system, we each have an affinity with one of the five elements, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. These elements express key aspects of our nature and relate to specific acupuncture channels. By listening and observing, we diagnose the patient’s main element and treat the channels accordingly. Whatever other benefits our patients feel, the most common response is a feeling of self-acceptance and inner peace.

Mindset Advice STOP LIVING ON AUTOPILOT AND LIVE BY DESIGN
Most people believe they control their lives, but external factors often influence our actions more than we realise. Humans are suggestible beings, and external influences can elicit strong emotional responses, leading us to act impulsively.
For instance, people might think they’re in control of their alcohol consumption, but studies show that humans drink 40% more in a bar with aesthetically arranged alcohol displays, and 60% more if it is backlit! Marketing ploys and societal influences nudge us toward behaviours designed by others all the time.
When we start reacting automatically to our environment, we lose agency. Furthermore, emotions like anxiety, anger, or fear can also cause us to act on impulse rather than with intention.
Developing true agency involves breaking free from these impulses and designing our lives with purpose. It means recognising that there is a gap between stimulus and response and expanding it.
To reclaim agency, we must: Meditate and Practice Mindfulness
Daily meditation and mindfulness exercises build neurons in the brain’s cognitive and creative centres, boosting our agency and reducing emotional reactivity.
Exercise Regularly
Exercise improves impulse control, productivity, happiness, and emotional regulation. Children
(and adults) concentrate better and make better decisions after physical activity.
Prioritise Sleep
Adequate sleep enhances decision-making, reduces frustration, and makes us less susceptible to suggestion and impulsive actions.
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Maintaining a gratitude journal can shift our focus towards positive aspects, fostering a more mindful and deliberate approach to life where we feel happier and less reactive.
Clear Trauma
Past trauma, even when trivialized, can significantly influence our behaviours. Recognising and working through trauma can help restore agency in our lives.
Summary
When we don’t take control of our lives, others will. Without our own plan, we may find ourselves playing minor roles in plans designed by others, leading to a life we didn’t choose.
It’s time to reject autopilot mode and start living in the present moment. Find the gap between stimulus and response and reclaim your agency.
Good luck.

PREPARE FOR YOUR SKI HOLIDAY WITH PILATES
A winter holiday is tough work. A full week of skiing can leave you feeling exhausted and with an aching, tired body. Training your muscles before you even leave home is the best way and will not only enhance your skiing experience but it could also prevent a nasty injury putting you out of action for weeks or even months after your skiing holiday.
Most people only ski 1 week each year, not surprisingly most injuries occur towards the end of the skiing week when the body is fatigued. Falls are more likely when sporting performance is reduced in cold conditions, and this increases the likelihood of these soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains. Cold muscles and ligaments have less elasticity and are therefore more prone to injury.
Pilates is a full body-conditioning program, which focuses on training the mind and body to work together more effectively and efficiently. So, plan ahead for the Ski season and make Pilates part of your preparation. There are several specific exercises that can prepare us for skiing to improve our core and strength.
Three basic exercises are outlined below:
Squats
Heel raises
Calf stretches
Posture, Alignment & Balance are essential for Skiing.
Good posture is the foundation on which everything is built and prepares the skier for action.
n Allows movements to steer and control skis
n Allows movement to maintain and recover balance
n Constantly changes and adapts
n Conserve energy. A good stance will be energy efficient, as it makes maneuvers more effective and enables the skier to ski for longer.
Why Pilates?
In order to complete a turn, there must be adequate strength in the core, buttocks, lower back and legs. Flexibility is needed, especially in the hips. We use specific Pilates exercises to target all these areas.
Most of us have done a squat in some shape or form in our lives. When you look at how a squat is executed, it does not look too dissimilar to someone skiing down a slope- bum out, back straight. This will strengthen your bum and the main muscles groups of the legs. You can easily perform 8 squats three times, every day. When performed correctly, a squat will also recruit your core muscles, essential for efficient movement.
Practicing 3 sets of 6 to 12 heel raises will help your ski preparations no end. Keep yourself limber by holding calf stretches for 30 seconds; repeat the stretch three times daily if you can.
Even if you are not taking to the ski slopes this winter, Pilates is a great way to get fit, improve your core, flexibility and balance!
