7.45pm. (Note that there are 2 performances on Saturday 24th May: - the matinee at 2:30pm and the evening performance at 7:45pm). Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, adapted by Jessica Swale.
Jane Austen’s classic romantic comedy dates from the Regency period (early 19th century) and centres on Elinor, Marianne and Margaret, daughters of Mrs Dashwood, who are forced after the death of their father to leave their comfortable Sussex home because it is to pass to their only male relative, John Dashwood, and his snobbish wife Fanny. They move to a cottage in Devon owned by their wealthy cousin Sir John, who lives nearby with his good-natured, talkative mother-in-law, Mrs Jennings. Marianne falls in love with the dashing Willoughby, ignoring the attentions of Sir John’s more modest friend, Colonel Brandon. Elinor hoped she was winning the affections of Edward Ferrars, Fanny’s brother, whilst she was in Sussex, but finds her future happiness under threat from Fanny’s determination he should marry into a rich family. Poor Elinor suffers further heartbreak when she later learns that he is apparently already secretly engaged to Mrs Jennings’s niece, Lucy Steele.
This amateur production of “Sense and Sensibility” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. Chads Theatre, Mellor Road, Cheadle Hulme, SK8 5AU. Book tickets via www.ticketsource.co.uk.

The Thriving Markets of Fine Art, Jewellery, and Watches: A Glimpse into Hansons Auctioneers’ Spring Sale
Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, the markets for fine art, jewellery, and luxury watches continue to thrive, both globally and in the UK. These industries, associated with elegance and investment potential, are seeing growing demand.
In fine art, contemporary works dominate, with renowned artists like Banksy and Damien Hirst leading the charge. Hansons Auctioneers has seen increasing demand for a variety of art styles, from classic portraiture to modern and abstract prints. For example, four paintings by Canadian folk artist Maud Kathleen Lewis collectively sold for £36,000.
The jewellery market is also booming. The appeal of precious metals like gold and platinum, combined with rising consumer demand, has led to record sales of both new and vintage pieces. Luxury brands such as Cartier and Tiffany & Co. remain highly sought after, while vintage and bespoke jewellery are gaining popularity. Hansons recently sold a stunning 5ct solitaire diamond ring for £92,000, highlighting the strong market for fine jewellery.
The luxury watch market is flourishing, particularly for Swiss-made timepieces. Iconic brands like Rolex and Patek Philippe continue to be in demand, with rare and vintage pieces fetching staggering prices. A 1970s Tudor Rolex watch, despite signs of wear, sold for £51,100 at a Hansons auction.
The recent Derbyshire Spring Fine Art, Silver, Jewellery & Watches Auction showcased the continued success of luxury items. Highlights included a Fabergé cigarette case that sold for £36,000, with proceeds going to The Wildlife Trusts charity, and a Chinese enamelled snuff bottle that exceeded expectations, selling for £7,000.
Hansons Auctioneers ensures each item is handled with care and expertise. Their quarterly Fine Art, Silver, Jewellery & Watches Auctions offer collectors and investors a platform to bid on rare and high-end items.
Led by, former Christies, Fine Art Specialist Victoria Shepherd and Fine Jewellery Expert Helen Smith, the team provides precise appraisals, ensuring each item is placed in the best auction for maximum results.
With rising demand, Hansons Auctioneers is now accepting entries for the Derbyshire Summer Fine Art, Jewellery, Silver & Watches Auction. Whether you have fine art or a rare watch to sell, Hansons offers expert valuations through nationwide events or home visits.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ROSES Garden Talk
Thirty five years ago, I started my career in horticulture as an apprentice rose budder (grower.) The entire spring and summer was spent crouched over, resting my elbows on my bent knees, budding a stock rose onto a rootstock. In the late summer, as our newly budded roses took hold, we were greeted by hectares of flowering roses and the scent was magical. These days, whenever I smell roses, I’m transported back 35 years.
With 30 thousand varieties of roses to choose from, how do you make a decision on what to buy? It would be unfair to pick my favourite roses but instead, in this short article, let’s highlight the groups. All the major rose growers produce a free catalogue and usually with a phone call they will happily send you their latest edition. These days you can see all this online, but personally I still like a hard copy that I can flick through. The rose groups are:
roses. They vary in size from 1 to 4 metre high shrubs and can have small single flowers with amazing scarlet autumn fruits or large, highly perfumed, perpetual flowers. The perfume can vary from rose to rose and I do recommend visiting a local rose nursery in the summer to smell the different fragrances. I love the scent of Rose Crown Princess Margret but some friends say they can’t smell anything!
There are also Patio roses which grow in pots and need almost no pruning and Groundcover roses which should need no explanation. The Climbing roses are just budded onto faster growing roots so you can have Hybrid Tea, Floribunda or shrub roses but just on faster growing roots for climbing over walls and arches.
Hybrid Teas - these are usually highly perfumed with large individual flowers, excellent for cutting for the house with long, strong stems. The Modern Hybrid Teas and newer varieties with similar flowers are not generally quite so perfumed.
Floribunda roses have numerous smaller flowers, scented but held in clusters of flowers on shorter flowering stems. These also make good cut flowers but tend to petal drop quicker than the Hybrid Tea roses.
Shrub roses are split into at least eighteen further groups and it’s too big a subject to deal with here. These all make magnificent garden plants and I can’t think of ever designing a large garden without including many different shrub
Remember that all roses need a rich soil, which means you need to feed at least once a year in March with a rose feed. Failure to do this will result in poor undersize flowers and slow, short flower stems during the growing season. Roses will grow in pots or any moisture retentive soil that is exposed to at least four hours of sunshine daily.
Whichever rose you choose they are all attention grabbing, beautiful flowering plants.
Happy Gardening!

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB DUCK RACE AND FAMILY FUN DAY
YES! IT IS DUCK RACE TIME AGAIN!
After much discussion with Stockport Council, Bramall Hall and the restoration workers we finally have the decision that the Duck Race will be able to go ahead, in safety, without too much disruption alongside the renovations to Bramall Hall. Please take care around the building works compound.
it will be held at Bramhall Park on Sunday May 18th. The Club is very pleased to announce that Leighton Snow Estate Agents have once again agreed to sponsor this event along with the Vernon Building Society and Ceramics & Chill. It is also supported by Strawberry Radio and Stockport M.B.C.
have to come in a vehicle please park carefully and respectfully.
Starting at 11.00am, there will be a variety of duck races to watch and there will be speciality races with local celebrities and businesses getting involved by decorating giant racing ducks that will then go beak to beak in the river. As well as Duck Racing, with some fabulous prizes for the winners, there will be many sideshows – fairground rides, bouncy castle and craft stalls. Singers and dance groups from the area will entertain you throughout the day.
Last year we had hundreds of families turn up on the day many of whom use the popular DUCK BUS Park & Ride service. Thanks to Belle Vue Coaches we will have THREE (yes, three!) free buggy friendly buses running throughout the day between Woodford Garden Village (via Bramhall) and the Park, Hazel Grove High School (satnav SK7 5JX) and from Church Road, Cheadle Hulme with parking available at the Cheadle Hulme School (satnav SK8 6EF). Look out for the yellow DUCK BUS. Please use them if you can but if you
The money raised will go to Francis House Children’s Hospice. Francis House supports approximately 2,000 people at any one time with respite care, homecare, sibling support, end of life care and emotional and bereavement support. And other charities and good causes supported by the Rotary Club will also benefit.
Entry to the event is still free but please buy a ticket for a duck in one of the Thousand Duck races for just a pound. They are available on the day or online now at www.bwrotary.org You could be a winner of £100! But you have to be in it to win it!!
And Family Fun Day
Bramhall Park 11 - 4 Sunday 18th May -
LET’S TALK KITCHEN DINERS
Lots of us long for the kitchen to be the hub of the home, the gathering area where we chew the fat, discuss our day and kick back with friends and family. More and more, homeowners want a relaxing area in or next to the kitchen to just hang out.
I visit so many clients who’ve had an expensive kitchen extension with this in mind, or bought a house with one already done (bliss! less messy construction work) but it doesn’t quite work. All of the effort is put into adding the space, with little thought as to the design of how it will look and work.
These images and the design work so well with shape and space available. The green L shaped sofa, has it’s back to the kitchen but looks out to the garden. Additionally there’s the end of the island given to just stools so you can gather here and chat if somebody is cooking in the kitchen with a cluster of modern, black seagrass shades to zone this area with softer, warm lighting, making it a cosy hub.
The side addition showing a long, wooden bench seating area works with the long, thin addition to the room. You can sit anywhere along the bench whilst still looking in to the kitchen area. Then when dinner is served, all gather around the sociable, white topped table, matching in
with the kitchen work surfaces. Lots of light is thrown into this area from the ceiling, and crisp white everywhere contrasting with the darker unit fronts, then a pink seat cushion for contrast. Orange would work really well for the cushion too, imagine if was dark blue as the units, it just wouldn’t have the same design feel.
Different levelled areas can be a necessity with homes built on a slope, so embrace it. The green kitchen lights, grey kitchen units, mirror the dining area of green sofa and grey fireplace.
Notice the green lamp too, tying it all in. Then the yellow, blue and pink thrown in to bring up the colour dial, all be it subtly.

NICE AND TIDY LANDSCAPE & GARDEN SERVICES
Spiced chicken with hot green relish.
As the days start to warm up (fingers crossed) we will be getting the bbq out and enjoying the garden. This recipe is perfect for a relatively simple meal for 4 to 6 people. The relish is really good and would go nicely with lamb as well. The recipe is courtesy of Diana Henry.
For the chicken.
6tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
2 garlic cloves crushed
Salt and pepper
8 skinless boneless chicken thighs
For the relish
2 cloves of garlic – chopped
Sea salt flakes
1 green and 1 red chilli
15g coriander roughly chopped
Leaves from 8 sprigs of mint
70g pitted green olives – chopped
6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar
Squeeze of lemon juice
Mini flatbreads, and a green salad to serve
Mix all the ingredients for the chicken in a bowl then add the chicken pieces and leave
for at least 2 hours or if possible
Make the relish just before you cook the chicken (because of the fresh herbs). Put the garlic and salt in a pestle and mortar and bash until you have a paste. Add the chopped and deseeded chillies and bash again. Then the fresh herbs and bash and then the olives and bash again. It wants to be chunky though so not too much. Add the extra virgin oil, balsamic and lemon juice and stir until combined.
When your bbq is cooking hot grill the marinated chicken until cooked through then slice into handleable pieces. Serve and let your guests make their own wraps with a little chicken, relish and salad.
A nice Rose would go well with this.

Mind the (NIC) Gap: A Lighthearted Look at National Insurance Contributions
Ah, National Insurance contributions. Just the phrase is enough to make most people’s eyes glaze over faster than you can say “Class 1 or Class 4?” But beneath the dry terminology and payroll jargon lies a system that’s more important—and more interesting—than it gets credit for. So, let’s roll up our metaphorical sleeves and take a look at Britain’s least glamorous but most essential financial mechanism.
in. If you’ve got gaps in your record—due to unemployment, time abroad, or parenting breaks you can usually pay to fill them in.
National Insurance (NICs) is how the UK funds vital services like the state pension, sick pay, maternity benefits, and the NHS. If you’re earning above a certain threshold, you’re contributing— automatically, even if you haven’t paid it much thought.
If you’re employed, your NICs are deducted straight from your wages, and your employer pays a further amount. If you’re self-employed, you pay through Self-Assessment, in the form of Class 2 and Class 4 contributions.
Yes, there are classes. NICs are basically Hogwarts for your pay slip: Class 1 if you’re employed, Class 2 and 4 if you’re self-employed, and Class 3 if you’re voluntarily topping up your record. No Sorting Hat, unfortunately—just spreadsheets and deadlines.
Your NIC record determines whether you’ll get the full state pension—and how much of it. You need 35 qualifying years to get the full amount. If you have less than 10 qualifying years, then no pension at all will be paid to you, if you have between 10 and 35 qualifying years then you have the gaps eluded to in the title which is where voluntary contributions (Class 3) come
In 2024, cuts to employee NICs grabbed headlines, but fast-forward to April 2025, and employers are facing a tougher deal: an increase in Employer National Insurance contributions. For every person on the payroll, businesses will have to pay more in NICs.
Forward-thinking employers are already exploring mitigation strategies. Salary sacrifice schemes—like offering pensions, electric vehicles, or cycle-to-work benefits—can reduce NIC liabilities for both sides.
Small businesses should also check if they qualify for the Employment Allowance, which mitigates up to £10,500 off their employer NICs bill each year. It’s an often-overlooked perk that could soften the impact of the rate increase and has to be claimed through payroll software. It is always advisable to seek professional advice from an accountant or tax advisor to ensure that you are fulfilling your tax obligations correctly whilst making the most of any available tax saving strategies and reliefs.

Mindset Advice
AIM HIGH AND ENJOY THE SUMMER
As we move through summer this year, there will be, as ever, many people in search of a fast physical ‘transformation’ in time for the holiday season.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with having high physical aspirations, the vast majority will NOT achieve a ‘transformation’. The main reason is because the vast majority of transformation seekers don’t have the right mindset for success. The reality is that people don’t really believe that transformations are possible and are also only really interested in trying quick fixes. Many people will live for most of their lives feeling out of control with their body and lifestyle. People have become resigned to the belief that they are enslaved by their impulses, cravings and destructive behaviours, and most media and television supports this view. This is evidenced by over 70% of the developed world being overweight or obese, and millions of people being addicted to alcohol, tobacco, drugs and gambling.
We then find ourselves blaming everything but ourselves for these problems… “It’s not me, it’s the food industry, there’s too much sugar and fat in food”
“smoking, drinking and gambling are too accessible and normalised, it’s not my fault I do them” - “I want to exercise but I don’t have time”
Do these excuses sound familiar? Trust me, I’ve heard them ALL over the years through helping thousands of people to overcome health problems. Having someone or something else to blame other than ourselves means we don’t need to take responsibility for our problems, we can simply be innocent victims of the capitalistic forces driving the consumption of all that ails us…
As a capitalist myself, I don’t buy this excuse. It is no conspiracy theory to say that overweight people, and people who gamble, drink and smoke make mountains of cash for some of the most powerful global industries, such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food, tobacco, alcohol, gambling and of course governments (through taxes and levies!). It IS a conspiracy theory however to suggest that these industries are evil, and conspire to drive us to greater levels of ill health in the name of collective profit, and one which unhelpfully labels us as hapless victims.
It is perhaps most likely that natural economic forces of supply and demand, coupled with shareholder thirst for ever increasing returns render these industries overly focussed on generating cash, with no space for care and consideration. An apathy about the collateral damage caused by their quest for profits emerges, rather than an evil conspiracy. All that being said, we cannot forget that capitalism has given us many of the things we hold dear such as better healthcare, longer lives, greater standards of living, global travel, a far more peaceful planet than ever before and much, much more.
We can’t have it both ways. We can’t blame capitalism for all the evils of the world, whilst reaping its rewards in every other way. At some point we need to accept the situation in the global economy, and CHOOSE to engage our highly advanced brains to take responsibility for our own paths. It’s likely the market forces nudging us towards ill-health and addiction will always be more powerful than those trying to get us healthy, the more virtuous industries just can’t compete.
The health transformation industry isn’t helping either as it’s too short term, playing into the quick fix preference of the human brain which is why it is so rarely successful.
The desire for a transformation in itself is flawed, because if we find ourselves only wanting to get healthy for a holiday or an event, then the presupposition is that our actual life isn’t a good enough reason, and it should be. This leads to the conclusion that the only rapid transformation anyone should be interested in is a transformation of mindset, as if that is achieved, the rest will follow.
Being fit and healthy must be a lifestyle change, a mindset shift and a long term decision to live longer, have more energy, and to take control of our lives.
We aren’t victims by default, only by choice, and better choices must start now.
Aim high and enjoy the summer,
PURRFECT PAIRINGS
Irecently came across this purrfect idea and wanted to share it with you. A charity, St Giles Animal and Rescue Centre near Taunton in Somerset, has set up a cat companion scheme. The idea behind the scheme is to pair home homeless cats with older people.
As with many animal charities, St Giles have found themselves with a growing number of animals coming into the centre. In fact, many charity bosses have hit crisis point amid a disturbing rise in abandoned pets in desperate need of care. The reasons for the rise in animal abandonment have been attributed to factors such as the aftermath of the pandemic and cost of living increases. This also puts financial pressure on the charities who find they are struggling to survive due to their growing costs and their resources are stretched to the limit as the number of animals needing their care and support rises.
combat loneliness in the community amongst older adults. It is well documented that pets offer a sense of routine and purpose to the daily lives of older people. They can make people feel less lonely and isolated, they bring a sense of comfort, companionship, joy and connection. The presence of an animal can boost mood, decrease stress levels, and even improve physical health through activities like walking a dog or playing with a cat.
Angela Wills, 89, who lives in Stoke St Gregory, decided to take part in the St Giles cat companionship scheme, she has been paired with 13-year-old Snowy. She said: “It’s lovely, I know that I’m not on my own and she’s the best alarm clock to wake up to in the morning. I’m so glad I’ve got her.” The other great thing about this scheme is that once paired they continue to support both the owner and the cat with home visits and provide treatments for the animal if needed.
The manager at St Giles Animal and Rescue Centre, Jack Linnell, seems to have come up with a way of helping to ease part of the problem by creating a cat companion scheme. Jack said: “We’ve got to think of other ways to rehome these animals.” The solution is to pair up homeless cats with isolated people in the community.
The cat companion scheme is working in two ways, first it is a way to rehome abandoned animals, in this case cats, and secondly to help
I hope that the initiative is adopted across more communities, it’s a small solution to a big problem.

8 Easy Ways to Be a Sustainable Traveller in 2025
Make your holidays more rewarding—with less impact on the planet
After a year marked by record-breaking weather events and increasing concern around overtourism, many travellers are rethinking how they explore the world. But good news—sustainable travel doesn’t mean giving up luxury or excitement. With a few smart choices, you can enjoy a more meaningful, environmentally friendly holiday without sacrificing comfort or fun. The right kind of travel can have a positive impact on local communities and lessen damage to fragile ecosystems - so let’s talk 8 easy ways you can be a better traveller. Here are eight simple ways to travel more responsibly in 2025
1. Embrace Slower Travel
and natural resources. Instead of heading to hotspots like Amsterdam or Barcelona during peak times, consider alternatives like Rotterdam or Seville. You’ll get better value, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed vibe.
Travelling off-season or in the shoulder months also means fewer tourists and a lower environmental impact.
4. Explore Like a Local
Many cities now reward sustainable choices! In Copenhagen for example, the CopenPay program offers free coffee and attraction discounts to tourists who use public transport or take other climate-friendly actions.
Wherever you go, you can map out local buses, trains, or cycling routes—so you’re not tempted to grab a taxi.
Instead of multiple short trips, consider taking one longer holiday each year. Better yet, swap short-haul flights for scenic train journeys. Rail travel lets you soak in the scenery, skip airport stress, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Think countryside views, charming local train stations and the freedom to move around whenever you like. Europe’s rail network is growing—making it easier than ever to explore multiple cities in one go.
2. Fly Non-Stop When Possible
Taking a direct flight isn’t just more convenientit’s way better for the planet.
Multiple take-offs and landings increase carbon emissions, so if you can, skip the layover and fly straight to your destination. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference to the planet! Not sure which airlines are the best choice for the planet? Do your research, some airlines are investing in fuel-efficient fleets and sustainable aviation fuel, which cuts down emissions significantly.
3. Choose Lesser-Known Destinations
Overtourism puts stress on local infrastructure
5. Book With Responsible Tour Operators
Not sure which travel companies put the planet first? Tour operators like Intrepid, Exodus, and Inside Travel are B-Corp certified and label the carbon footprint of their trips—making it easier to travel consciously.
There are some great tour operators that align with travellers’ values.
Ready to explore the world and make a positive impact while you do it? With just a few mindful choices, your next holiday can be both unforgettable and eco-friendly. Let’s protect the planet as we discover it—plan your next adventure with sustainability in mind and travel with purpose.

WILMSLOW WELLS FOR AFRICA (WWFA) WILL AGAIN BE HOSTING THEIR
ANNUAL GARDEN’S DAY, WHICH IS ALWAYS VERY POPULAR AND A MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR THE LOCAL CHARITY.
This year’s event on Saturday, 28th June, will enable visitors to explore more than 18 beautiful gardens across Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Mobberley and Mottram St Andrew displaying a range of designs and horticultural techniques.
The gardens will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Some gardens will also serve refreshments, whilst others will have plant sales to inspire you to get planting.
David Cash, Chair of WWfA said “Gardens Day is a great day out, especially if you’re interested in horticulture, keen to pick up a few tips and ideas or looking for a delicious tea. It also raises enough money to make an enormous difference to the lives of many people who can’t do something we simply take for granted - the luxury of being able to turn a tap whenever we want some water.“
Tickets, giving access to all 18 gardens, are available on the day for £15 from the first garden visited, or in advance for £12 from Chelsea Flowers (Chapel Lane, Wilmslow), The Potting Shed (Alderley Edge), Primrose Cottage Nursery (Styal Village), Jenny Morris Bridge (Mobberley) or from Shan (01625 520193). Children welcome for free. No dogs please.
WWfA provides clean water and sanitation in some of the poorest areas of Africa having raised over £1.71 million to date, 99.3% of which has benefitted over 650,000 people in desperate need.

Community news STOCKPORT’S UNDERBANKS: A HISTORIC GEM FLOURISHING WITH NEW LIFE
Stockport’s historic Underbanks is undergoing a vibrant revival, reaffirming its reputation as “one of the coolest little corners of the country” (Sunday Times). The area is thriving thanks to a £7 million investment from Stockport Council, alongside strong partnerships with developers, businesses, and the local community.
Recent additions
The Underbanks’ has a fantastic reputation as a thriving food and drink destination, with its independent ethos putting the area firmly on the map. Recent openings include The White Lion which reopened in June 2024 after extensive restoration, providing a refreshed venue for socialising. The newly opened wine bar, Bruck, self-funded by local entrepreneurs, adds to the area’s diverse dining scene. Renowned restaurant Where the Light Gets in has received national recognition and was recently crowned the best restaurant at the prestigious Manchester Food and Drink Awards. Meanwhile, pop-up ventures like Little Scarfs, a pasta restaurant, continue to highlight the area’s innovative spirit. Collaborations with Totally Stockport have added to the area with vibrant art installations featuring icons such as Jimi Hendrix and Sarah Harding,
with more expected to follow. The Underbanks continues to shine through its communityfocused spirit, with a full calendar of events. Upcoming highlights include the Live at St Mary’s event and the Stockport Music Story: Strawberry Studios Forever concert on March 31st, as well as the Wood Snake art show launch on February 22nd at Underbank Studios, which will showcase local talent. Plans are also in place to host more community events and activities. Leader of Stockport Council, Cllr Mark Hunter, expressed pride in the area’s achievements: “We’re proud to be at the forefront of regeneration across Greater Manchester, and the progress we’ve made in the Underbanks is a testament to that.
“More businesses and developers are choosing Stockport and the Underbanks as the place to set up or relocate, contributing to the town’s thriving economy. As part of our ambitious plans for the town centre, we’re committed to supporting local businesses, and we encourage everyone to shop local—it’s a vibrant, one-of-a-kind destination and well worth a visit. To be recognised nationally by such esteemed publications as The Times reinforces the fact that we are getting it right.” Follow @Underbanks_SK on social media to stay updated on events and developments.
COULD MOUTH TAPING BE THE KEY TO BETTER SLEEP?
You might have seen mouth taping popping up on social media lately. It’s one of those trends that’s gained traction not just for its novelty, but because it taps into something quite fundamental: how we breathe during sleep.
So, what is it?
Mouth taping involves gently sealing the lips with a skin-safe, breathable tape before bed to encourage nasal breathing throughout the night. The idea is that breathing through the nose – rather than the mouth – may support better oxygen intake, reduce snoring, and help maintain a steadier breathing rhythm.
Why nasal breathing?
Nasal breathing filters and humidifies the air we inhale, supports nitric oxide production (which aids circulation), and encourages diaphragmatic breathing. Mouth breathing, on the other hand, is often linked with dry mouth, disrupted sleep, and even an increased risk of sleep-disordered breathing.
My personal experience
A few words of caution
It’s not advised if you:
n Have diagnosed sleep apnea
n Struggle with nasal congestion or chronic sinus issues
n Experience anxiety or panic attacks at night
n Are under 18
And if you’re considering trying it, make sure you use tape designed specifically for the mouth – never regular tape. Always approach it with caution and seek medical advice if you have concerns.
This won’t be a gamechanger for everyone, but it’s an interesting concept with some emerging evidence behind it. At the very least, it highlights just how important our breathing patterns are for good quality sleep.
If you’re curious or have questions, feel free to give me a call at the practice and I will be happy to discuss.
Out of curiosity, I decided to try it myself. I was surprised by how much more refreshed I felt in the mornings – clearer in the head and less sluggish. I’ve also heard similar feedback from patients who’ve given it a go: things like better sleep quality and fewer night-time wake-ups. That said, mouth taping certainly isn’t for everyone.

PILATES FOR HAPPY SHOULDERS
Pilates is well known for helping a bad back, but did you know how helpful Pilates can be if you suffer from shoulder problems?
Just like for back issues, we need to look at the whole body to see if we can identify the cause of shoulder pain, discomfort and dysfunction (if you’ve suffered a traumatic injury to your shoulder, then the problem is much easier to identify). A key point to remember if you are suffering is that the major joints in our bodies alternate in their need for stability and mobility.
As well as recommending joining a Pilates class, here are a few tips to follow at home
1. Don’t ‘stabilise’ your shoulders by forcing them down your back, this will only jam them up more.
2. Allow the shoulders to melt down the back, visualising the distance between your shoulders and ears getting bigger and bigger.
3. Think about the tips at the bottom of your shoulder blades gently drawing in towards your spine.
If we start at the feet, the ankle joint is designed for mobility. Working upwards, this means the knees are designed for stability. That’s a really important concept to understand, because our bodies are masters at compensation, so if we lose mobility at one joint, such as the ankle, the knee will become more mobile to compensate for this! As the knee joint is designed for stability, if there is too much mobility, it fairly quickly leads to dysfunction and pain.
Looking at the shoulders, they’re designed for stability, so that means the thoracic spine (the upper part of the spine) needs to be mobile, otherwise it will cause dysfunction in the shoulders
We can also follow this logic down the body – are your shoulder problems caused by a problem that started in the lumbar region or the hips? Perhaps it was lower still, in the knees? Or did the problem start with stiff ankles?
Don’t despair, all is not lost! This is where Pilates comes in: the moves you do in a Pilates class all work to keep the mobility and the stability in the right areas of your body, keeping your body as compensation-free as possible!
4. Be aware of those lower muscles workingthey are often very switched off so be aware it may take a while to sense this, do NOT force.
5. When you have a sense of those muscles working, gently pulse them a few times a day, keeping the shoulders relaxednotice that as you work these muscles your breastbone lifts upwards.
6. Enjoy the feeling of being wide and open across your chest. Notice how your head starts to return to a much more natural position, your eye level will be straight ahead....... so, smile and greet the world.

Monthly Implant Open Days at Cheadle Hulme Dental & Cosmetics
SAVE £680 ON THIS TRANSFORMATIVE TREATMENT
Dental implants offer a fixed solution for missing or failing teeth. Unlike dentures, they feel just like your own teeth and as they are not removable, they give patients the freedom to enjoy foods that are difficult to eat when wearing dentures.
A dental implant is a titanium post that acts as a prosthetic tooth root surgically placed into the jawbone. We use medical-grade titanium because it’s strong and light, but also because it has the ability to fuse with living bone.
Once the implant has fused with the surrounding bone tissue, it can be used as a foundation for a replacement tooth secured to the top of the dental implant. It can also support multiple implants such as bridges or dentures. Implants can be used to replace all of a patient’s missing or failing teeth in what we call an all-on-four procedure where patients have all their teeth removed and replaced with implants the very same day, giving them a ‘same day smile’ where they walk away with a brand-new smile, in just one day. For natural-looking and secure replacement teeth, patients visit us for dental implants from near and far. After the implants are placed, patients find that their eating and speaking ability has improved significantly, along with their confidence to smile again. That’s why dental implants are the gold standard for missing teeth replacement.
If you book in for your initial consultation for implants on one of our Implant Open Days then you will save £680 on this life changing treatment. Please contact us for further information on this.
As you can see, dental implants significantly improve the appearance and functionality of a person’s smile, and can even take years off their appearance.
