Welcome to SE22 This time last year we were still in lockdown, so right now I am grateful that we are free to see our friends and family this Christmas. I am certain our local shops will also be enjoying having a much better end to 2021 than they did in 2020. Please do support our wonderful local shops and businesses. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. There are a packed seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. So there is plenty to do right on our doorsteps. There are Christmas fairs, carols and theatre; so plenty to keep us busy during the festive period. Link Age Southwark launch their Big Give Christmas Challenge with the opportunity to raise £26,000 in just 1 week! Full details pages 18. I am hopingt to make a great donation with the funds I raise from the Dulwich Charity Lunch, which I am really pleased to be running again this year. If you would like to attend, please see page 28. What's On - December Wednesdays 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 December: Zoom Portraiture @ Dulwich Art Group & School

2pm - 5pm. This is now a hybrid session with 15 artists allowed into the studio and also cameras for artists attending through Zoom. Paint a clothed model with a focus on the portrait over two three-hour sessions. We give you a wide view and a closer portrait view so you can work out the framing for yourself. My Favourite Variegated Plants Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw Plants with variegated foliage, different coloured zones on leaves, can add a lightness to a garden, breaking up the green. They don’t tend to be very fashionable and certainly some plants are much nicer than others. Personally, I prefer the ones with white/creamy coloured markings to the more yellow pigments. These plants with their pale leaves work well with blues, dark purples, pastels and whites, and dotting a few around the garden can add an attractive contrast to other foliage and light up shadier spots. Once you start looking, you’ll find many plants from holly and ivy to acers and euphorbias have a variegated version. Here are a few to consider.

Shrubs

Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ Cornus (dogwoods) are grown for their red stems revealed in winter when the leaves fall, but this variety also has elegant pale green and white leaves that shimmer in the sun. Plant it somewhere visible during the winter.

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Queen’ This stylish shrub has small greyish green and cream leaves with contrasting black stems. It gets big but is easy to clip to shape – and the foliage is great for flower arranging. Likes sun or part shade.

Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ This classy, rounded shrub has glossy green leaves with fine golden margins and clusters of deliciously scented pink flowers in January. Tricky to get established but worth it.

Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’ This new Fatsia variety has the trademark handsome evergreen leaves but with a delicate sprinkling of pretty white markings. It looks lovely with white-flowers and adds light to areas of dappled shade.

Weigela ‘Nana Variegata’ I inherited one of these deciduous shrubs and have grown to love the light cream and olive-green leaves, plus the mass of pale pink flowers in May. Prune after flowering and grow in sun or shade. 12 | SE22 - December 2021

Herbaceous Perennials Iris pallida ‘Variegata’

With boldly striped, blue-green and white leaves and lilac blue flowers, this is a showstopper! Likes a sunny well-drained border.

Hosta ‘Francee’ This smart hosta has large stylish green leaves with contrasting white margins and spikes of blue summer flowers. They need protection from slugs or grow in a large container in a shady area. Lovely with ferns.

Grasses

Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’ An upright grass with cream-striped leaves and airy purplish flower sprays becoming pale brown in winter. Lovely!

Carex ‘Ice Dance’ Tough and useful evergreen grass with shiny narrow evergreen leaves edged with creamy white margins. A smart plant for tough spots in sun or part shade.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Alboaurea’ This low growing grass has vividly striped yellow and green leaves and spills over pathways softening edges. It likes sun or part shade.

Climbers

Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Variegata ‘(Star Jasmine) A rarer form of the popular evergreen climber with the same fragrant white flowers in mid-summer. The glossy olives green leaves are splashed with creamy white blotches that are tinged pink in autumn.

Wild Goose Breasts with Orange Glaze

Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk is the season to be merry – and if, like me you are extra excited about celebrating Christmas properly this year here is a lovely recipe for a special family dinner, or even for Christmas Day if you’re looking for an alternative to turkey.

Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

4 wild goose breasts salt to taste 1 dash dry vermouth (optional) 1 tablespoon grated orange zest 1 orange, juiced 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon soy sauce ½ teaspoon dry mustard ¼ teaspoon caraway seeds

Method 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees farenheit (175 degrees centrigrade). 2) Rinse the breasts in cold water, and place in baking dish.

3) Splash with vermouth, then season with salt & set aside.

Vegetables - Jerusalem Artichokes, Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Garlic, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Red Cabbage, Shallots, Spinach, Swede, Turnips. Fruit & Nuts - Apples, Pears (late – Concorde, Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Winter Nellis), Rhubarb (forced), Walnuts Meat - Duck (end of season), Goose, Guinea Fowl, Hare, Partridge, Venison Fish & Seafood - Brill, Clams, Cockles, Haddock, Halibut, Hake, John Dory, Lemon Sole, Salmon (coming into season), Monkfish, Mussels, Oyster, Plaice, Turbot

4) In a medium bowl, combine orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar, garlic and soy sauce. Season with mustard and caraway. Pour glaze over breasts in baking dish. 5) Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes (remember to baste at least twice during baking as wild geese tend to have very little fat on them and the basting ensures they remain moist and tender). Once the flesh is no longer pink and the juices run clear you know the meat is cooked. 6) Serve with oven roasted root vegetables.

Do you know your non-negotiables for health & wellbeing?

ishen Lakhiani is an entrepreneur. He’s also an author. He’s the creator of a company called Mindvalley University. They run month-long workshops and seminars in various different parts of Europe, around health, fitness, and wellbeing. The reason I bring him up is I read an article recently where he was crystal clear on what his non-negotiables were for his own health. He makes sure that they happen every single day and nothing is allowed to come in over that in the diary. The reason for that is he strongly believes in putting himself first. And I hugely usually support that idea. I don’t mean ignoring your kids or telling a spouse you can’t help them with a problem because you’re the most important thing. It’s not about that. It’s not about being selfish and selfcentred. It is about understanding the 1, 2, 3 things that need to happen for you so that you can be a better manager, a better employee, a better colleague a better leader, a better wife, brother, sister, father, mother, et cetera.

Know Your Non-Negotiables for Health & Wellbeing I’ve got four and four is a lot, but this is my game, right? I suggest you have one, two or three. 1) Sleep - My sleeps got to start with a seven. Seven hours and a minute, I’ll be all right, seven hours and 59 minutes, I’ll be a lot better, but it got to start with a seven. 2) Daily Meditation - Two daily meditations, five or 10 minutes a day. 3) Vegetable Intake - Three vegetables on two out of my three meals a day, because I know the benefits of eating lots of vegetables. So normally breakfast and dinner. 16 | SE22 - December 2021

4) Steps - A minimum number of steps because I know walking improves my mood and energy. And it’s great for my cardiovascular fitness. It’s a real foundation of fitness if you like.

Getting Clear on Your Daily Goals So both Vishen and I are very clear on what our non-negotiables are and it doesn’t take me a huge amount of time during the day to make sure they happen. And when they do, I know I’m good to go. I can respond to whatever comes in, whether it’s something blindsiding me or whether it’s just an increased amount of workload that day. Maybe for you, it’s your kid coming home from school because they’re not well, or you get a big piece of work dumped on you by a sick colleague, whatever it might be. It’s part of being resilient. Know your non-negotiables to be happy, healthy, and resilient.

So my question to you is what are your health non-negotiables? The Big Give Christmas Challenge Double your donation to Link Age Southwark in the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge 2021

L

ink Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity providing a range of services to older people and people living with dementia. This Christmas, the charity is taking part in the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge 2021 to raise £26,000 in just 1 week! The focus of their campaign is ‘reconnecting older people to their communities’ and funds raised will go towards the charity’s transport services. Prior to the pandemic, Link Age Southwark ran 24 social, exercise and activity groups and over 250 service users benefited from them per year. One service user said: “Before I went to the groups I wasn’t going out. I’ve got a good family, but I was isolated from other people in my age group. I love the group - I’ve met some very nice people and I love being with them.” The charity’s service users were supported to attend the groups through the provision of transport, including volunteer drivers, escorted taxis for those living with dementia, as well as an accessible minibus. Link Age Southwark provided 4000 transport journeys in the year before the pandemic, and 100% of their service user survey respondents from that period said they were happy or very happy with the charity’s transport provision.

The team at Link Age Southwark are now working hard to encourage older people and those living with dementia to re-engage with their physical groups. Sophie Wellings, Chief Executive of Link Age Southwark said: “We are aware that some of our service users have experienced a deterioration in their mobility, as well as their mental wellbeing. Our groups provide older people and those living with dementia an important connection to their local community.” Donations made to Link Age Southwark during the Big Give Christmas Challenge will be generously matched, meaning your donation will have twice the impact. During the campaign week, the charity is hoping to raise £13,000 in online donations, in order to access the £13,000 in their matching pot. he increase in dog ownership continues and many of you will need to take a moment to consider how to keep you and your dog happy and safe over the festive season.

Separation Training Top of the list for Lockdown dogs at Christmas is to avoid reigniting separation issues. Having everyone at home again for a few weeks can cause separation training to regress. Make sure you try to stick to a routine that echoes that which your dog is used to. If your dog has started to cope with some alone time or is already coping, then ensure you build in periods during the day and evening when your dog is given time by himself, just as you would normally.

Christmas Hazards Our curious, social hounds love the smells, noises and excitement of Christmas. Christmas foods, decorations and festive plants are probably just as enticing to dogs as they are to us. However, be sure to supervise your dog around all three categories. A raft of seasonal foods are toxic and even fatal if ingested. Decorations can also be harmful if ingested or the dogs gets tangled up, and certain types of decorative plant are also dangerous. Be sure to do your homework and check up on foods and plants that are toxic to dogs. The last thing you want at Christmas is an emergency visit to the vet!

If the weather gets colder or damper, keep older dogs and short coated breeds wrapped up. Damp can be bad for older joints and skidding around on wet leaves, snow or ice can easily lead to joint injuries at any age. If the temperature plummets, watch out for salted paths or roads. These can cause skin irritation, especially to the pads. Wash paws on your dog’s return. Even more deadly is anti-freeze which some use to clear ice on car windscreens or pathways. To a dog it tastes like nectar but a few licks can lead to serious organ damage and death. Hairy dogs can develop painful ice balls between their pads. Remove these as soon as you can with a flannel and warm water. Ears scratched with wet, muddy paws can

A final word about the need for extra vigilance around exploratory youngsters. For many this will be their first Christmas with a puppy or adolescent dog. With all the excitement that is part and parcel of this time of year it is very likely bad habits like nippy behaviour; humping or ‘house destruction’ can re-emerge or suddenly intensify. This is just the pup’s way of burning off steam but bad habits can also stick and we don’t want that. Those of you with young dogs will need to be more vigilant. If you cannot supervise then ensure you have a nice, safe and comfortable space where your dog can be kept out of harm’s way, for periods when you are busy or just ‘resting with your eyes shut’ after that extra glass of wine.

New Council Homes In East Dulwich There 16,000 applications on Southwark Councils housing list. Southwark Council has pledged to build 12,000 new Council homes over the next few years. This building programme is well under way with new flats and houses being let to overcrowded and homeless families every month. Here in East Dulwich several sites have been identified and are underway.

Crime In Goose Green Councillor Victoria Olisa and I attended a recent Police Ward panel meeting. Crime figures in the Goose Green Ward are relatively low compared with other parts of London. Some crimes have risen recently. Theft from motor vehicles have gone up. This is more relevant given the run up to Christmas. Police advice not to leave any presents etc visible on the back seats. Snatching of mobile phones by thieves on bikes is on the rise. Police warn not to use mobiles in public places. Finally, 24 | SE22 - December 2021

Councillor James McAsh and I recently visited the Goose Green Primary School. The school have put in a bid to the Cleaner, Greener Safer fund for an edible living wall and eco garden in the playground. It has been a very difficult time for all of us this last two years. Many of us have lost loved ones due to the virus. We may well have to wear face masks for the foreseeable future. Vaccination and booster take up will certainly help eradicate this threat to public health in the long term. When a child has already spent much of their day sitting with a pen in their hand, it is unsurprising that they will not always want to go back to something similar after school. Here are some tips to help you not only get through those times but to make it fun and something your child looks forward to.

Being There At the end of a long day you might not feel like sitting down to do homework with your child, but your child will be so much happier if you are next to them. A younger child is likely to need your continued help but when they become more independent as they get older, rather than leaving them to go it alone, why not try doing some household admin on your computer next to them while they are working? Your presence will be reassuring, and they can check in with you easily if they are uncertain about something.

Inject Some Humour We all know how good laughing feels. Laughter causes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, and these promote a sense of wellbeing. You can harness that power in helping your child to learn, and enjoy the process of learning, creating a virtuous circle that leaves them feeling positive and confident - the best state of mind to learn. Just remember that healthy laughter happens with others rather than at the expense of others.

Motivation & Planning Create a homework chart with your child. Younger children can decorate it or colour it in. Put it somewhere at their eye level where it will serve as a visual reminder and add a sticker each day after they’ve done their homework. When they’ve collected all their stickers for the week, they get a reward you have agreed beforehand. 26 | SE22 - December 2021

Brain Fuel A hungry child will be unfocussed and unmotivated, and you can also create a positive association in your child’s mind between homework time and eating a favourite (healthy) snack – they will come to look forward to both! Chopped fruit or cheese in a bowl for them to munch while they work are both good options.

Homework Playdates Consider inviting one of their friends over to do homework together. They can gain a lot from learning with a friend and you are likely to earn brownie points with the friend’s parent or carer! Follow up with a nice tea and there will be positive associations all-round!

Taking It Further If your child is inspired by a particular topic, try to extend their knowledge in that area. It could be an exhibition, a film or anything that will allow them to follow that interest the topic has sparked. Looking into the things that truly interest will the most fun of all!

A Time for Spending, Giving & Taking

D

ecember is the month of Christmas whether you celebrate it or not. The marketing industry ensure that we all know Christmas is happening. Sometimes it begins days after the August bank holiday and other times it may be somewhat later. Irrespective of when the advertising campaign is launched, the advertising and marketing professionals ensure it is in our space whether we want it or not. Christmas is a time for spending and the Bank of England states “… in the run up to Christmas our spending habits change. We spend on average almost £740 more in December, which is 29% more than in a typical month.” This pattern was put on pause last year due to the pandemic and the alleged cancelling of Christmas. Research by Finder found, “Christmas spending last year was 10% less than the £26.9bn spent on Christmas gifts in 2019.” Christmas is also a time for giving and in particular charitable giving, be it money or our time. However, it is imperative that when giving money to charities especially at Christmas, that donors ensure that their donations are going to their intended charity. Why? Christmas is fast becoming a time for taking, by the fraudsters. Charitable givers must be alert and on their guard because fraudsters only need to be lucky once. According to Action Fraud, “£775 was the average loss per victim to online shopping fraud last Christmas.” This is a sobering statistic from Action Fraud given that 2020 saw a reduction in our Christmas spending. However, the risk of fraud should not be a deterrent to charitable giving. What is required is donors are vigilant and ensure they are giving to the legitimate charity. Three popular charity frauds that are churned out yearly are: 1) The fraudster posing as a charity collector at domestic and/or office premises for a charity they’ve made up, or they misuse the name of a genuine, often well-known, charity.

2) The use of a fake website, where the fraudsters capture your credit or bank account details when you go to a donation page. 3) The request to call a phone number to make a donation. In such cases the telephone number is usually a premium rate number, so the donor is being hit twice; fraudulent donation and paying a premium charge for the telephone call. To help donors give with confidence to their favourite charities, the Fundraising Regulator and Charity Commission for England and Wales have issued a seven part guide: 1) Check the charity name and registration number at gov.uk/checkcharity. 2) You can also check if a charity is registered with the Fundraising Regulator and is committed to good fundraising practice at: fundraisingregulator.org.uk/directory. 3) Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to unsolicited messages or calls that ask for your personal or financial details. 4) Make sure the charity is genuine before giving any financial information. Look for the registered charity number on their website and beware of any online advertisements that just feature a mobile number. 5) To donate online, type in the charity website address yourself rather than clicking on a link. Ignore requests to donate through a money transfer company as this is a popular scam. 6) Contact, or find out more online, about the charity that you want to donate to or work with. 7) Be more cautious about fundraising appeals with generic wording, such as ‘to help people with COVID-19’. Ask what exactly the money would be used for and who by. However, if following the seven steps, a donor has an element of doubt, they should not hesitate to call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

ome Italian chap once asserted “There is nothing in the whole world which abides. All things are in a state of ebb and flow.” Now there is no evidence that Ovid, wearing a fancy toga, nonchalantly plucking at his lyre, ever made it down to Champion Hill. But had he done so he’d have recognised the last couple of months at the Stadio della Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury’s. On the ebb side, Dulwich Hamlet kept up their ignominious history of crashing out of the FA Cup early doors by losing to a talented team of baggage handlers from Heathrow Airport. There was then a soul-sapping defeat to bottom of the league boom to busters Billericay, leaving a huge Hamlet crowd feeling decidedly dicky. And yet the flows have gushed forth too, with a babble of Rabble inspired victories secured over fleshpots such as Hungerford, Chelmsford and Braintree. Triumphs which have pitched the Sons of Edgar Kail towards the nosebleed inducing upper reaches of the Conference South. Two home victories stand out. First against old double-barrelled rivals Hampton and Richmond, where another Italian, Fibonacci, would have nodded knowingly at the progress of the scoreline. 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3 before a thrilling 4-3 victory was secured over the dashing West Londoners [are you sure that’s the Fibonacci Sequence - Ed]. Continuing the Latin theme, East Dulwich’s finest then took on the Romans of Bath City. Known throughout non-league football as El MiddleClásico, the match’s outcome was never in doubt as the legions in pink and blue flooded forward, emerging 3-0 victors, and sending the Romanes eunt domes pointless and bereft. Thrilling stuff. Let us hope the Hamlet don’t rest on their laurels as the season careers towards Christmas Meanwhile the Daughters of Edgar Kail have struggled a little to gain momentum in their campaign this season. But now, with crowds for their Sunday home games approaching the 500 mark, there is a sense the Hamlet’s women’s team are about to burst out of the traps like a demented greyhound despatching hamstrung hares.Why not head down to Champion Hill and

The touch-typing course is designed for children with dyslexia in Year 5 and 6 and will consist of four days of tuition. Students are encouraged to continue developing their speed and accuracy beyond the course, which is monitored by the teachers. What could say Christmas more than a production of A Christmas Carol! This much-loved classic has been adapted from the novella in a faithful but stripped-back version that brings drama and wit to the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. Dickens’ superb story-telling is brought to life by a cast of well-known characters and narrators. Staged in St Barnabas Parish Hall, the Dickensian feel couldn’t be greater and this production promises to bring Christmas cheer and an antidote to Humbug after the cancelling of festivities last year. The Last Word – Ivan Perilli The one thing you couldn’t do without? Indian and Turkish restaurants!

Do you know your neighbours? I do know my neighbours and love them – I do hope the feeling is reciprocal!

The most famous person you’ve seen? Not being native British and avoiding watching TV… I probably missed many! Good for them!

Describe your perfect weekend Saturday night in between Peckham and Dulwich bars, Sunday morning in Dulwich in a nice cafe, Sunday evening at the Dulwich Tandoori or Hissar!

Where are you to be found on a Saturday? For a quiet standard Saturday night, with a couple of friends at The East Dulwich Tavern or the Bishop, good selection of beers and usually a good choice of music too (it always helps!)

Ivan Perilli is a music composer, novelist and time management expert. His main projects are the Happy Graveyard Orchestra and the Sleep City Devils. How long have you lived in the area? I moved to East Dulwich more than ten years ago, since then… changed many things in my life but not the location!

What brought you here? I moved to London years before I discovered Dulwich, almost by accident when you are new to London. Since then, I decided to stay!

What has changed most during that time? Shops come and go, faces come and go, nothing really changed, I wish some more live music appeared, to be honest! And people should stop cutting trees down.

What do you most value about the area? It’s so quiet, birds singing in the early morning, even quarrels in the street sound nicer than the average London argument.

What one thing would you change? I wish more art galleries and live entertainment could be found in Dulwich… we can’t be satisfied by good restaurants only. 36 | SE22 - December 2021

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Being intentionally lost between Lordship Lane, Dulwich Park and Dulwich Village… so many quiet, relaxing, beautiful streets, fresh air and almost no cars.

When I want to relax... I wish I knew what relax is! But I would say a strong coffee and a pastry at Signoria… then back to work!

The book I’m reading at the moment... “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” by Tom Wolfe, bought actually at Chener, the local bookshop on Lordship Lane. Why that book? Because there are plenty of unusual treasures along the way of modern literature, there’s something further than “The Handmaid’s Tale”, I think!

My perfect holiday… By train, nothing planned, all across Europe, every day a different capital, a different bar, a different language to understand on the menu, a different art exhibition.
