Welcome to SE22

This month I am celebrating 15 years of SE22! I don’t think I ever thought it would be as successful as it has been. Other businesses celebrating 15 years this month are The Clipper and The Bishop. Sadly Blue Mountain (Rock Steady Lounge) has now closed. We rely on all our lovely, local advertisers to be able to produce this magazine, so if you do give them a call or drop them an e-mail, please do say where you heard about them. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful events that push us to leave the comfort of our homes. We have over seven pages of events happening right here on our doorstep. So dive in on page 8. Remember that we also have more events on our website www.arounddulwich.co.uk along with daily posts. Until next time.

pen days have been visited, speeches have been listened to, preferences have been agonised over, applications have been submitted, scholarship assessments have taken place, banding tests have been sat and now there is nothing to do but wait. For parents of Year 6 children, the anticipation is almost over as they will soon discover the result of their child’s secondary school application! This can be such a stressful time - especially if you have a particular school in mind - and for every family celebrating the news on 2nd March, there will be many others calling the admissions team and sitting out the summer months on the waiting list of a higher preference school. Good luck for a happy outcome for us all! Perhaps the ‘Breathe Yourself to a Happier Life’ workshop at Telegraph Hill Centre (4 & 18 March) might be useful? You will learn a simple and easy breath technique that can support you in all areas of your life, including reduced stress and anxiety. Link Age Southwark’s annual All That Jazz fundraiser is back for its 9th year (6 March). Join this lovely local charity for a wonderful evening of music performed by students from JAGs, Kingsdale, Dulwich College and more. 60 top Mid-century dealers descend upon the bold brutalist Christison Hall and red brick Victorian cloisters of Dulwich College at the Midcentury Modern Show (15 March). Expect an eclectic mix including original travel, film posters and artwork, iconic furniture, industrial, lighting, rugs, textiles, throws, glass pieces, ceramics, wallpaper and jewellery. Join Chef David Datt at Fifty Seven on Northcross Road for a very special supper club evening in tribute to Gary Rhodes (28 March). Over the hill, the Club Naija Supper Club is held at Grounds & Grapes in Honor Oak on the first Wednesday of each month (4 March). Enjoy a five-course tasting menu of traditional Nigerian dishes reimagined with a modern twist, to the sound of Naija pop and afrobeats. games presented by an eclectic team of talented Illusioneers. All are welcome at the Plastic Free East Dulwich Monthly Community Clean (29 March). Meet 11am at St Francis Park. At the Babble Talks event at East Dulwich Picturehouse (25 March), Anthologist, Ana Sampson, seeks out the hidden talent of female writers of the past. Who are these women and why do we not already know their names? From the innovative to the inspirational, discover the stories of suffragettes, aristocrats, schoolgirls and medieval visionaries who make up the hidden history of women’s writing. These TEDstyle talks are designed for parents and carers with babies under 1-year old. Feels like just yesterday I had a 1-year old in my arms and now he will be starting secondary school in September! Fingers crossed it’s to the one he wants… *refreshes email* Details of all local events including ticket and booking information can be found on our website and Instagram @arounddulwich.

What To Do In The Garden This March Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw 1) Mulch. After weeding, give bare soil a thick layer of organic matter such as well-rotted manure. Mulch stops soil losing water as weather warms up, suppresses weeds and smartens everything up. 2) Fertilise. Sprinkle soil with an organic slow release fertilser, such as chicken pellets or fish, blood and bone and lightly fork around trees and shrubs. Give roses a special rose feed or a balanced fertiliser. 3) Plant and deadhead bulbs. Divide or plant snowdrops while they’re still green. Deadhead daffodils, leaving the green foliage. Plant summerflowering bulbs such as gladiolus and lilies in a sunny spot. 4) Invest in spring flowering plants. I love blue Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ and pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ as well as magnolias and camellias – the single white varities are particularly delicate. This is also a good time to plant new climbers, 22cm away from walls and the last chance to plant bare root trees, roses and shrubs – the hair roots need to start getting established. 5) Move plants. Move shrubs that are in the wrong place, taking as large a root ball as you can, adding well-rotted compost. 6) Divide plants. Create new plants by dividing large clumps of perennials. Use two forks back to back to tease the roots apart – and don’t worry if some roots break. 7) Prune perennials. Cut down overgrown perennials and grasses to make way for new growth. Prune your roses removing dead, diseased and crossing stems, then pruning flowering wood back by a third. Established cornus (dogwood) can now be cut down to the base to encourage colourful winter stems. Prune hydrangeas to a third of last year’s growth. 8) Late flowering clematis (Group 3) such as Jackmannii and ‘Etoile Violette’, by cutting them 2324cm from the ground, to just above a healthy bud. Summer flowering jasmine can also be pruned by taking out the main stem or two to the ground. Honeysuckle, ivies, rambling roses and winter flowering jasmine can also be pruned hard. 12 | SE22 - March 2020

Photo by Nika Akin on Unsplash

9) Grow scented sweet peas by make a bamboo wigwam, and planting two seeds at 30cm intervals and 1cm deep in situ. Young plants may need help before tendrils twine themselves around the support. 10) Cut and feed your lawn. Start mowing your lawn for first time on a high setting. If needed, aerate it by making holes with a fork 10cm deep and 20cm apart. Give the lawn a feed of chicken manure pellets towards the end of the month – ideally when the lawn is damp.

Triple Ginger Cheesecake with Poached Rhubarb Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk Preparation time about 30-45 minutes. Serves 8-12. Cooking time approximately 30 minutes in total plus chilling minimum 3 hours.

Ingredients For The Base • • • •

100g Duchy Original Stem Ginger Biscuits or Ginger Nuts Finely Crushed 50g Digestive Biscuits 60g butter, melted 20cm (8”) spring form tin, greased

Ingredients For The Filling • • • • • • • • • •

400g forced rhubarb trimmed and cut into 2.5cm batons 50g caster sugar (for the rhubarb) 1 tbsp grated stem ginger 1 tbsp stem ginger syrup from the jar 800g cream cheese 75ml double cream 200g caster sugar (for the filling mixture) 1 vanilla pod, split & seeds scraped out 2 whole eggs 2 egg yolks

Method

1) For the base, place the biscuits and butter in a bowl, stir well and then press into the base of the tin. Place in the fridge to chill. 2) Prepare the rhubarb. Put 50g caster sugar, the stem ginger syrup and 1tablespoon of water in a wide shallow pan and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the rhubarb and poach gently for 10 minutes or until the rhubarb is just cooked when tested with the point of a knife. Do not allow the rhubarb to go mushy. Place a sieve over a bowl and drain the rhubarb well. Reserve the juice. 3) Whilst the rhubarb and the base are cooling prepare the filling, preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas Mark 6. 4) Put the cream cheese, cream, sugar, vanilla seeds, eggs and egg yolks in a clean blender or food processor and blend until smooth and mixed – do not blend for more than a minute, otherwise the mixture might split if it overheats. 5) Now scatter the grated stem ginger over the biscuit base, and then evenly spread half of your drained poached rhubarb on top. 14 | SE22 - March 2020

6) Pour the filling mixture over the rhubarb in the cake frame or tin, then tap the frame a couple of times to remove any trapped air bubbles 7) Bake the cheesecake in the oven for 22–25 minutes. Once cooked, the top will have coloured golden brown slightly and will have risen (souffléd) slightly, but it will sink back down once set. The cheesecake will also still have a slight wobble in the centre when it’s ready (once chilled, this will have set perfectly). 8) While the cheesecake is cooking, place the reserved rhubarb juices in a small pan and cook over a gentle heat so that it reduces to a thick syrup. Leave to cool. 9) Remove from the oven and leave the cheesecake to cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then chill in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours before cutting. The chilled baked cheesecake will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. 10) Cut the chilled cheesecake into 8-12 even portions. Decorate with the remaining poached rhubarb and spoon a little of the syrup over each slice.

In Season This Month Fruit & Nuts - Forced Rhubarb Vegetables & Herbs - Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Chicory, Jerusalem Artichoke Kale Leek, Onion, Pak Choi, Parsnip, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Salsify, Spinach, Spring Onions, Swede, Turnips, Sweet Potato, Wild Nettles Meat & Game - Hare, Spring Lamb Fish - Cockles, Cod, Dab, Dover Sole, Gurnard, Hake, Halibut, Langoustine, Lemon Sole, Lobster, Mussels, Oysters, Red Mullet, Salmon, Shrimp, Whitebait, Winkles

How To Rest & Recharge

S

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com omething that occurred to me relatively recently is that I’m a classic blend between extrovert and introvert – I have very extroverted tendencies, but also quite introverted. And what was really eye opening to me, is when someone explained the difference between the two. An extrovert isn’t someone who loves to be at parties and is always shouting their heads off and an introvert isn’t the quiet one that never comes out of their shell. But, an introvert is somebody who recharges by being alone and an extrovert is someone who recharges by being with other people. That’s the true definition of it. And having heard that, I realised that one of the ways I recharge is predominantly by being alone. It’s not by socialising – that’s where I expend my energy. Once I twigged onto this, (which is quite funny that I have suddenly found this out in my mid-forties! But it’s changed the game for me a bit). I’ve really pared down my diary in terms of evening engagement. That’s when I really like to recharge and then I expend all the energy I have to expend during the day, whatever’s needed – but I like to come back, stay home and recharge in the evenings. It’s an observation I’ve since made amongst people that my company interacts with, and I interact with people who are mostly overscheduled. Have a think about how you recharge, and if it is being alone, if it is in the evenings where you get to recharge your batteries and rest and recuperate – have a look and see if you can thin out your diary a little bit to reflect that. But also think about what it is that helps you to recharge? Is it gardening? Is it reading? Is it doing something for others? Is it just spending time on your own? Whatever it is, really tap into it so that you fully understand and then make sure you’re doing enough of it throughout the week so you can get that recuperation and that rest that you need. When we think about rest, we tend to think of

16 | SE22 - March 2020

Photo: Max van den Oetelaar on unsplash.com

it as sitting down and doing nothing, watching television, lying in bed, or sleeping in. Yes, they are all forms of rest, but I want to open your mind to the different forms of rest that there are. What is underappreciated around rest is that it can be very active. For example, light forms of exercise; walking, a very gentle jog, or yoga can be rest. Also, indulging your hobbies and your passions. I think that's what a lot of people don't appreciate. Rest is where you're resting the mind, getting some parasympathetic dominance. The part of the nervous system that helps us to rest, repair, and digest. Something that warms the heart, or what I like to call heartfulness - something we really love, that has strong connection and meaning and purpose for you, and that's going to be very individual to you. So, think about what fills you with that warming, that makes you relax, that makes you feel like you've got space in the day for yourself and you feel recharged doing that thing. And look to your diary and make sure you've got plenty of that scheduled in. It really is as simple as that.

A Caring Nature Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Emma Addleton, Teacher at Alleyn’s Junior School, tells us how to nurture a love of the environment in our children.

C

hildren adore nature. From building a sandcastle on the beach to taking a simple trip to the park, it is easy to engage them. They are fascinated about what makes the world what it is, our place in it and how it affects us. When the connection between children or young people and the environment is nurtured their natural love of the outdoors can be translated into a commitment to care for our planet. By fostering these philosophies in an age-appropriate way, they are much more likely to stick with them as they get older. Here are some ideas to encourage this mind-set:

Getting From A To B Talk to your child about why it is a good idea to leave the car at home on smaller journeys. What is the car doing to our environment and how can we make a difference? They will quickly understand how taking a train, walking, cycling or scooting is not only healthier but that these small trips have a huge impact on local pollution.

Food Buy a mesh bag as an alternative to single-use plastic bags and let your child hand pick your fruit and vegetables at the shop to reduce your singleuse plastic waste. Discuss with them how you can reduce plastic with other food purchases, for example by buying in bulk or choosing goods in more sustainable packaging. Better still, why not grow some of your own vegetables in a pot or in your garden?

Recycling If they aren’t already doing it, make sure your child understands which materials go in each of your recycling bins and get them sorting the waste! Soon it will be second nature. 28 | SE22 - March 2020

Your Local Community Check out what your local community is doing to help environmental issues. You might find a number of groups working for various causes. Plastic Free, for example, are striving to abolish single-use plastic in local businesses and schools in their area, (and there is a branch in East Dulwich). Look them up and see if you can go along to a litter-picking session or a meeting.

What’s On Opening children’s minds to global climate issues will enable them to form their own ideals and ambitions for the environment. Help them learn through documentary wildlife programmes and books, and introduce them to the inspiring work of Sir David Attenborough. This will help your child look beyond their immediate environment and gain awareness of what other communities or creatures are facing in our world.

Mindset Matters With Becca Teers | www.healthy-habits.me | www.mindplus-experience.com

What is self-care? Practicing self-care is including activities in our lives, to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Self-care does include the basic three; healthy diet, exercise and enough sleep, but there are other activities that we can do to make us feel good too.

Why is self-care important? We are all so busy with our lives; taking care of others, working, looking after personal admin, running a home and fitting in socializing too. It can be very easy to forget about our own mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Often we are the last on the list of our priorities. This fast pace can go on for only so long before we start to suffer in some way. Whether it’s mental or physical symptoms such as anxiety, stress or physical illness, I believe the mind and body are very connected and stress does cause physical imbalance, which can lead to illness. Self-care is especially important at times of excitement, stress or when we’re especially busy or are experiencing big changes in our lives. Unfortunately these are the times when we tend to forget to take care of ourselves properly and selfcare can go out of the picture totally!!

How can we include self-care into our lives? By making time regularly to do something that makes us feel good or that we enjoy, we are practicing self-care. Including some of the following activities in your life can really make a difference to your wellbeing; • Comedy/laughter- watching or reading something funny • Meditation • Yoga • Reading a novel or something inspiring • Music- listening to your favourite tunes can really enhance your mood 30 | SE22 - March 2020

Photo by Emma Simpson on Unsplash

• Watching something uplifting • Exercise • Fresh air- just going for a walk can help to clear your head • Spending time in nature • Taking time to relax in the bath instead of a quick shower • Manicure/pedicure/facial or massage- treating yourself to some pampering • Hobbies, learning something new or doing something you’re interested in or are passionate about • Practicing gratitude- writing 5 things each day that your grateful for can really help you to appreciate yourself and your life.

It can take a bit of planning! Self care needs to be scheduled into your day/ week to ensure you get time to do it. I actually recommend, when you’ve decided what activities you want to do, to write them in your diary alongside all of your obligations. This way you are much more likely to be able to find the time for yourself. As well as the ‘basic three’ (healthy diet, exercise and sleep) a good guide is to do one thing that you enjoy everyday and one thing that is relaxing. I hope this will remind and inspire you to take a few minutes each day for yourself. This time investment is well worth it in the short and long term!

or the third year running Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust produced a limited edition Dulwich Hamlet Rainbow scarf to celebrate LGBT+ History Month. Alongside the scarves, we had on sale beanies and trucker caps that feature the club crest in the colours of the LGBT+ Rainbow Flag. A limited number of these rainbow scarves and headwear can now be purchased on the Trust run club shop wwwdhfcshop.co.uk. A percentage of the profits, from the sale of the scarves, has been donated to two LGBT+ charity organisations Football v Homophobia and AKT (Albert Kennedy Trust). All these items went on sale when Chelmsford City visited Champion Hill at the beginning of February. As a guest of the Trust, the game was attended by Brian Stokes from Football V Homophobia and at HT he accepted a “giant” cheque for £600 for this organisation, which was the Trust’s donation from the sale of the rainbow scarves. Football V Homophobia was originally conceived and launched by the Justin Campaign in 2010 to raise awareness of homophobia that was still prevalent in both grassroots and professional football. The Justin Campaign group was founded in 2008 ten years after Justin Fashanu’s tragic suicide in 1998. Last month Justin was honoured by being inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame. The Trust and football club has been a big supporter Football V Homophobia for many years and it was great to meet Brian on the day. At the women’s team home fixture on 9 February, we were due to welcome representatives from AKT, but sadly, this match was postponed due to bad weather.

@dhstorg

AKT formed in Manchester in 1989 to offer support to LGBT+ young people facing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. It now has additional offices in London and Newcastle that also offers support in finding safe homes in addition to support with things like employment, education and training. We hope to catch up with AKT soon as they have been invited to the re-scheduled fixture later in the year. To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day (8 March), Dulwich Hamlet will be hosting a Girls United FC tournament on Saturday 7 March at Alleyne School. The five-aside event takes place between 13:00 – 17:00 and further information on how you can take part can be found on the club’s official website www.dulwichhamlet.co.uk

SE22 Councillors Councillor Jon Hartley | Dulwich Hill Ward | jon.hartley@southwark.gov.uk

Empowering Communities Local Meetings

Our most recent Empowering Communities meeting took place on 5th Feb 2020 at Christ Church on Barry Rd and focused on the theme of ‘Health and Wellbeing’. It was also the first meeting that we have held in Dulwich Hill as a single ward, rather than joint with other wards or as part of a multiword forum. The meeting was chaired by my colleague Maggie Browning and I and included a presentation from a council officer who gave an overview of the services and support the council provides to encourage residents to live an active lifestyle, including free Swim and Gym and the Cycle with Confidence programme. We then heard from residents who spoke about action they had taken to foster a sense of community and well-being in their road or estate - such as a street party or community club. We also looked at the ways the council had supported them with this, usually through the help of a small grant from the Cleaner Greener Safer, Highways or Neighbourhood Fund, which we determine locally. Our next Empowering Communities meeting will be on 10th March and will focus on road safety and air pollution, if you’re a Dulwich Hill resident do come along.

Traffic Around Goodrich School

Concerns about the level of traffic in the roads around Goodrich School have been growing amongst local residents, parents and school staff. Numbers of vehicles, along with some inconsiderate driving and parking are causing difficulties and safety concerns, particularly at the start and end of the school day. At a recent meeting at the school, there were many examples given of the upset caused and agreement from all of us present that this problem needs to be fixed. As local councillors we are working with school staff and parents to get potential solutions from council traffic officers; such as crossings, patrols or short period street closures like Southwark’s School Streets scheme that have worked well around other local schools. 34 | SE22 - March 2020

Southwark Budget 2020/21

Over the past few weeks councillors have been working through the council’s budget for the next financial year. Despite some additional funding being provided by the (then) Chancellor in his Spending Review last November we are still having to find some savings this year. However, once again we have worked to ensure that these savings have little or no impact on front-line services for our most vulnerable residents. In order to set a balanced budget we do need to raise council tax by 1.99% and levy a 2% precept for Adult Social Care, this is in line with other London councils. The impact will be to raise the average Southwark element of the council tax bill by 82p per week or 12p if you are on the our Council Tax Reduction Scheme, which remains one of the most generous in London. Before the next budget in 2020/21 we expect the government to have introduced a new Fair Funding Formula for all councils, as well as undertaking a business rate revaluation. The combined impact of these changes is currently unknown, but they are likely to mean further savings will be needed in next year’s budget.

Council Housing Repairs

I’m a member of the Southwark Housing Scrutiny Commission and this year we’ve been looking at how best to improve the council’s housing repairs service. Following the bringing back in-house of the repairs service, Southwark is now directly providing the vast majority of repairs to our council housing stock. We have looked at how effectively and efficiently these repairs are done. We’ve talked to local residents about how the current system can be improved. Whilst standards are better than under previous contractors, too many residents have a negative experience trying to arrange repairs. We are now recommending that Southwark ends its internal client/contractor split and returns to a more traditional service model. We have also found more ways to make the service more responsive to our residents, including involving them in the sign off of the repair’s completion.

International Women’s Day & Local Foster Carers

L

ast year 75% of newly registered foster carers in Southwark identified as women. The continued dedication and commitment of local foster carers enables us to provide loving stable homes for young people in the communities they were raised. One local foster carer, Francine Borg, has agreed to share her experiences of fostering for Southwark Council. Francine was inspired to become a foster carer by her own mother who was a foster carer. After having her own children Francine decided that she was ready to start her journey and has been fostering for nearly 27 years.

Do you remember the first child you looked after? Yes, he was a new-born baby straight from the hospital; he only stayed with me for a few weeks before he went to live with a maternal auntie. I was so excited discussions had been occurring for a while so I knew what was in the pipeline. I knew from the outset that it wasn’t going to be a long placement and actually that was quite nice. Over the years you learn that the longer children are with you the harder the goodbye is.

Can you explain why despite the above you provide long-term fostering placements? The longer a placement lasts the more secure the young person feels, they are able to develop a deeper bond and they trust you to help them. Apart from developing a strong bond I also get to see the children grow and witness their successes. Some long term placements continue to visit as adults, it’s a life time relationship; you eventually get to see them start their family and you meet their partners and their children. I recently cared for a child pre-adoption and receiving updates from her parents and seeing her settled in a happy forever family is worth the hard goodbye. When things are tough you find a way through by talking and seeking support, especially from the supervising social workers. I’ve had some great supervising workers, so thanks Southwark for that. 38 | SE22 - March 2020

Can you tell us about providing care for siblings? I like to take on sibling groups because these children have shared experiences and are usually a comfort to each other; at first they will often find talking to each other easier than talking to me. These children have lived together from birth and have shared experiences, so I think it’s important to keep siblings together whenever possible. In my experience children settled better in sibling groups as they are a comfort to each other.

Is there anything you would like to add that I haven’t asked? If you are thinking about fostering just ring up and enquire! You have nothing to lose by finding out more and a whole lot to gain. We would like to take the time to celebrate and thank all of our Foster Carers and encourage anyone who wants to know more to contact Southwark Council Fostering Recruitment Team: 0800 952 0707 / fostering@southwark.gov.uk

Vanishing Pots Of Pension

A

round one in four adults under 55 years are at risk of losing their share of £37 billion in unclaimed pension funds. Research published last month suggested 1.6 million pensions are currently missing, with each pot worth £23,000. This is not surprising when you consider: the death of the job for life no longer exists; people are changing jobs more frequently; and over 10m workers automatically enrolled into workplace pensions. If you have changed jobs or moved home without informing your pension provider, it’s easy to lose track of those savings. Even though you may no longer be actively contributing into an old workplace pension, the fund may continue to be invested and earn interest which can grow steadily over time. To help pension savers, the Pension Tracing Service (PTS) was established by the government to allow pension savers to track down their pension provider administrator. This free service was launched in 2016. It does not advise if you have a pension with a provider or how much it may be worth. It is a service solely, to identify the administrator of the pension provider. Access to the service will always require pension savers to know their national insurance number plus the different pension pots they may have lost track of over the years. These may be workplace pensions or personal pensions. When searching for lost public-sector pensions, you will be directed to a specific pension enquiry service. Once the administrator’s details has been obtained, pension savers can contact them directly. However, to improve success rates it is advisable to have a record of your employment dates per employer. It should be noted that the PTS does not feature all pension plans in the UK, therefore it may not hold details of some of your pension plans.

42 | SE22 - March 2020

The simplest way to keep track of any pension plan, especially workplace pensions when you change jobs, is to notify your pension provider so they can easily contact you. Your pension provider should be informed whenever you move home or change your personal details, such as email address or phone number. Another option, although one that is more relevant to defined contribution pensions, is to consider holding your pension pots in one place. In theory, making it easier to manage your savings. Defined contribution plans are workplace pension schemes where employees and employers contributions are invested; and the proceeds used to buy a pension and/or other benefits at retirement. This type of pension is by far the most common. Following the birth of auto-enrolment in October 2012, consolidating your pension may not suit other types of pension plans, where exit fees can apply and valuable benefits or guarantees may be lost. Individuals with defined benefit or finalsalary pension plans have a set level of income based on their annual salary when they retire. As such, consolidation may not be the best practice. Some employers have been known to offer incentives for people to transfer final-salary pensions, but those who do so are usually worse off after. Never transfer a defined benefit pension plan or undertake any pension activity without seeking advice from an FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) regulated pension advisor. Older pension schemes may have valuable benefits, such as guaranteed annuity rates, that can be lost following a transfer, which goes some way to explaining why over-55s are usually reluctant to consolidate their pots. The FCA estimated in 2018 pension savers were defrauded out of pensions which had taken some 22 years to accumulate. Never be rushed or pressured into making a pension decision. Furthermore, always reject any unexpected pension offers, and always ensure the advisor is FCA regulated before engaging or changing any pension arrangements.

Scaredy Cats

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

S

eparation anxiety is a well- known behaviour issue in the dog world and most dog owners will have heard of it or know someone who’s pet has a problem with being alone. However, it is much less recognised that cats may also suffer forms of distress when they are left by their owners. Cats are viewed as a solitary, less social species than are dogs and it is not unusual for owners to go away and have a neighbour feed the cat. For some cats this can work but for others it may cause quite significant distress. Recent research suggests many cats have a much greater need for owner proximity than was thought. This is not to say cats are as dependent on humans as are most dogs but they are not indifferent to the company of owners they have bonded with either.

Reasons For Separation Issues In Cats • Certain breeds, like Burmese and Siamese, seem to be more prone to separation issues, as are orphan cats and cats weaned too early (before 8 weeks). • Cats without access to the outdoors can become bored and frustrated leading to a cycle of stress and distress. • Even cats with tiny, urban garden ranges can become stressed sharing territory with rival cats or new cats. • Changes in the internal environment through illness, pain, old age and confusion, or a change in the external environment such as a house move or break up of a relationship. • Scary events inside or outside the home when the owner is absent (new, startling noises, the arrival of a new cat next door).

How To Recognise Separation Issues • Excessive, urgent meowing. • Eliminating outside the litter tray, especially onto owner clothing or the bed. • Excessive, repetitive grooming. • Eating too much or too little. 46 | SE22 - March 2020

What To Do • Exclude medical reasons for behaviour change. Speak to your vet about what is happening and get your cat checked. • Provide hunting outlets. Build in daily, quality playtime with your cat- use flirt poles and toys that appeal to cats. Encourage your cat to run around, chase and grab the toys. • Improve your cat’s environment - create various high places to rest with hideaways. • Ensure litter trays are large enough and clean. • Save meals for periods of separation and place into puzzle toys. • Try not to fuss your cat if she is clingy or overly vocal, notice her when she is calm and quiet or playing a game with you. • Don’t fuss your cat when you leave. • Try a plug-in Feliway diffuser. This product is designed to help calm cats. • Don’t go on holiday and leave your cat to fend for itself or be fed every few days by a neighbour. Very occasionally a cat may be so anxious that specialist intervention and behaviour modification supported by anti-anxiety medication is necessary. Your vet will advise on expert help in your area.

The Last Word - Ric Baldock A dawn swim at Brockwell Lido or a run round Dulwich Park, a stroll down Lordship Lane and North Cross Road Market with a coffee and a cake from the South East Cakery, one of our Plastic Free Champion businesses.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

Local parent, husband and ocean lover working to rid our community of single-use plastic.

How long have you lived in the area? We’ve been South Londoners for 17 years, gradually moving Eastwards and finally up to East Dulwich from Peckham two weeks before our daughter was born, just in the nick of time! That was 8.5 years ago now.

Dulwich Wood - we are so lucky to have areas like these on our doorstep and we need to do everything we can to protect them. Most people don’t actively go out to damage the environment but we have to remember that all our actions have consequences. The waste that entangles our flora and fauna and poisons our rivers, waterways and seas comes from the system that we are all a part of. We all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce our impact and encourage others (including government and businesses) to do the same. There is no Planet B!

What is your favourite shop? It has to be Karavan Eco - they have been providing eco-friendly products and advocating environmentally conscious living since 1995.

What brought you here?

The book I’m reading at the moment

We’ve always loved living in South London, the mixture of cultures, the green spaces, the independent community spirit. Now we’ve settled in East Dulwich we honestly couldn’t imagine living anywhere else in London.

How to Save the World for Free by Natalie Fee. Some of the environmental books out there are pretty hard going, full of climate doom, Natalie’s book is refreshingly entertaining and positive. She tackles issues in a light-hearted way that makes the suggestions she is making so much more accessible and achievable. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to make some small (and free!) changes to help our planet.

What do you most value about the area? The proximity to three amazing green spaces: Dulwich Park with its facilities and events, Peckham Rye with the Japanese Garden and kids area where we celebrate our daughter’s birthday every year and Dulwich Wood where I still get lost every time I go, without fail!

What one thing would you change? A complete ban on single-use plastic!

Do you belong to any groups? I run Plastic Free East Dulwich with a group of fantastic volunteers. We’re working to raise awareness and change behaviour towards singleuse plastics in our community. Talking to the council, schools, businesses and other community groups and organising events like our monthly Community Cleans. Follow us to find out more (details opposite).

Describe your perfect weekend 48 | SE22 - March 2020

My perfect holiday Peeling, shoulder high waves in Devon with only friends, family and the odd seal for company. Coming out of the sea to look for plastic waste to clear up and finding there is none. This would be perfect but sadly no longer the reality on our shores. But nothing like a quick beach clean to warm you up after a cold surf!
