Welcome to SE23 This month I am going to ignore what is happening in the news and keep my fingers crossed that we were all able to meet up at Christmas. By the time you are reading this, it will be all over and 2022 will be starting! As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. January is usually a quiet month but we still have six pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. I am sure there plenty of changes in the coming months. Last month saw the return of the Dulwich Charity lunch which I organised to raise much-needed funds for Link Age Southwark. Thankfully the lunch was very well attended and we raised a fantastic amount for the charity. Please do take a look on pages 24 & 25 to see how we got on. Link Age Southwark sent an update on their Big Give Christmas Challenge. Full details pages 30. The local charity has been working in the borough for over 25 years, providing a range of volunt eerled services to older people and people living with dementia. Winter’s Star Performers Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw Whether it’s attractive bark, shiny berries or a splash of colour, there are lots of plants to add winter interest to your garden….
Beautiful Bark Betula utilis var. jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ has brilliant white bark, which glows out in soft wintery light. It’s lovely as a multi-stem and fab underplanted with snowdrops and crocuses. Prunus serrula is another winter showstopper with shiny mahogany bark striped with lenticels. Parrotia persica can be grown as a wonderfully sculptural multi-stemmed tree. On mature trees, the steely grey bark flakes off in patches giving interest and texture in winter. Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple) is a small tree with chestnut bark that peels off to reveal cinnamon coloured wood beneath. Or for a brighter, redder bark, try Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku.’
Fabulous Flowers Clematis cirrhosa ‘Jingle Bells’ has creamy bell-like flowers and evergreen foliage from December. Or for a splash of pinky brown look out for Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens ‘Freckles’. Both ideally need a sheltered south-facing wall. Cyclamen coum are delicate hardy cyclamen with tiny pink flowers and silvery leaves (December to March) that make a gorgeous carpet under deciduous shrubs and trees with ferns and snowdrops. Narcissus ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ flowers as early as December – perfect for those too impatient to wait until spring for their daffs. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ is a shrub that makes a winter focal point with its delicate golden orange scented thread-like petals on bare stems from Dec and March. Great for bringing into the house for a scented flower display. Winter flowering daphnes such as Daphne odora with its delicate clusters of pale pink flowers will give you a lift on a cold day. Edgeworthia, closely related to daphnes, has clusters of scented yellow flowers on bare stems in winter, for some serious wow factor! Winter-scented viburnum such as V. bodnantense and closely related Viburnum farreri both have clusters of sweet-smelling flowers on bare stems. 12 | SE23 - January 2022
Stunning Stems Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ (Dogwood), with its brilliant coral stems in winter makes a wonderful display in a largish group. I also like Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ which has variegated leaves in summer. Intersperse with gleaming olive stemmed Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’ for more impact or underplant with crocus or bright evergreen grasses such as Carex ‘Evergold’. Prune at least some of the stems hard back each year as young stems produce the colour. Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ (contorted hazel) has curling stems and catkins that make a lovely focal point in a winter garden.
Beguiling Berries Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ has clusters of amazing purple/pink berries, which cling to bare branches - bringing a serious wow factor to the garden in winter. Nandina domestica is an upright airy shrub with spectacular clusters of bright red berries in the winter against purplish leaves. Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C.van Tol’ is an almost spineless self-fertile holly so has guaranteed bright red berries on dark into winter - or until the birds get at them! Rosa rugosa roses such as Roseraie de l’Hay are tough useful roses with big red hips into winter. Alternatively R. moyesiii has long orange hips and Rosa glauca is striking with purple grey foliage and red hips – all bringing jolly cheer in the gloomy winter months.

Squash & Black Bean Casserole Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
A
t this time of year when it can be so cold and dark outside one of my absolute favourite meals is a casserole. If you have made a commitment to eat less meat then you are going to love this recipe. Vegan (or vegetarian) casseroles are so easy to make and unlike the fatty, sodium-packed casseroles of the past, these whole-food, plantbased creations can be loaded with colourful fresh vegetables, healthy legumes and whole grains and gorgeous aromatic herbs and spices. Casseroles are a real winter staple in our household, I often make enough to last over 2 or 3 meals through the week. Leftovers can also make a fantastic lunch, served with a jacket potato, and if like me, you have hungry boys who are less keen on a meat free diet it is easy to serve it with a meat accompaniment, like sausages or chicken & chorizo skewers.
Ingredients • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil • 1 medium red onion chopped • 1 red bell pepper diced • 1 green bell pepper diced • 3 cloves garlic minced • 2 spring onions chopped • 1 whole butternut squash, peeled and cut into ½” cubes (can use less according to taste) 1 can of black beans drained & rinsed • ½ teaspoon mixed herbs • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 can coconut milk • 500ml vegetable stock • 2 handfuls of kale or spinach, chopped • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1-2 teaspoons of chilli flakes (optional) • Salt & Pepper to taste
Method 1) Heat the oil in a large pot over a medium to high heat. Add the red onion and bell peppers and cook until soft (about 3 minutes). Stir in the garlic and spring onions and cook for 1 minute. 2) Add the butternut squash, black beans, mixed 14 | SE23 - January 2022
herbs and thyme and stir well. Stir in the coconut milk, vegetable stock, cayenne pepper and chilli flakes (optional) and bring to the boil. 3) Season to taste with salt & pepper. 4) Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes. 5) Stir in the kale or spinach and cook for about 4 minutes. 6) Stir with brown rice and avocado. Enjoy!

I
’d like to tell you a little story. Some years ago, I went to a show on London’s South Bank called Circa. It’s an acrobatic show and these athletes were doing the most extraordinary things. Balancing on one arm, doing jumps on stilts. I mean, incredible stuff. Sitting there in the audience close to the front row, I had a really clear view of the action. What stood out for me was that despite these people doing the most extraordinary things, their bodies varied quite a bit. Some were tall, some were short, some are incredibly cut. There was lots of muscular definition and others less so, but they were all incredibly strong. All of them were able to do all the stunts and all the tricks. Literally carrying the bodyweight of another, perhaps larger athlete on their shoulders whilst they were standing on one leg.
Performance Over Perfection What stood out for me was what these guys valued was performance over perfection. None of them were striving to get cut abdominals or bulging quadricep muscles. They were only focused on whether they could perform those stunts safely and with some degree of longevity, twice a day, 10 times a week. I wonder how much we, as agile business athletes, value performance over perfection? Are we chasing this notion of perfection and that we need to do everything, we need to appear a certain way, we need to perform a certain way? Or are we just focused on doing what we can achieve, for example, on delivering something that is good enough? On making ourselves happy and not worrying so much about external validation.
Seeking Internal Validation, Not External If we were able to make that mind shift into really focusing on performance, not perfection life could be significantly better for ourselves. I invite you to look at that in your own life. If you like, take the Circa analogy, are you looking for a chiselled appearance or are you just focusing on where that body can take you? The journey it can take you on. The experiences you can have with it, 16 | SE23 - January 2022
the connection you can form. Or are you focused on maybe the aesthetics? You can apply that to any aspect of life, to physical training, to your work, to the connection you have in your social environments, to the hobbies that you do. You can apply it to absolutely everything.
High-Achieving People and Burnout One thing I do know about high-achieving people, we do tend to get very caught up in this notion of perfectionism. And I think it can be a bit of a hiding to nothing and take you down that route to burnout. One of the commonalities of people who have burnout is that they very often described themselves as perfectionists. Let’s call ourselves performance-ists, if you like, I’m focused on what we can do with our minds and our bodies and not so much what they look like.

etting started is always the most difficult step for those new to financial planning. But it all starts with having financial goals. Goals give you a target and help you focus on the things you really want to do with your money. Building wealth and managing spending involves some short-term sacrifice. Sacrifice becomes a lot easier when you know why you’re doing it. So, the first question you need to ask yourself is why am I doing this?
A goal without a plan is just a wish accomplishing a goal is one of the best things for people feeling lost or hopeless is to do. Having a sense of accomplishment is important for our emotional health. One of the first rules of goalsetting is to ensure that your goals are SMART – meaning specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-targeted. I always recommend starting small, with something easily achievable. Achieving a small goal can be fun and should give you the confidence to keep going and to accept greater challenges.
Find out where you are Imagine being in a huge, unfamiliar shopping mall. You are trying to find a shop on a map. The map shows you where the shop is but how will you find it without knowing where you are? The same principle applies in goal setting. Finding out where you are now is crucial to any plan. This is done by taking stock of your net worth, including your income, expenditure, assets, debts, insurance, pension plans, savings and investments and will.
Discover where you want to be This is where you close your eyes and visualise. What do you want to have achieved financially in five years’ time? What about in ten years or at retirement? You can have separate goals for different time frames, breaking it all down into short term, medium term and long-term goals. 20 | SE23 - January 2022
A short-term goal may be to get out of debt or to build an emergency fund. A medium-term goal may be to save for a house deposit, whilst a long-term goal may be to plan for retirement. It is always worth writing your goals down and revisiting and refining them regularly.
Explore different ways of getting there You may have heard the phrase; “failing to plan is planning to fail.” Having a gameplan is crucial if you’re serious about achieving your targets. This applies to short-, medium- and long-term goals. Financial goals don’t have to be set in stone. They are there to be revisited and revised as your life evolves and your priorities change. Talking to someone about your goals makes them real and tangible. This is where engaging with a financial adviser should help.
Have a good coach in your corner Having goals is one thing however transferring them into reality is quite another. Just as top athletes engage with sports coaches to help them achieve their full potential, engaging with a financial coach could give you the edge you need to smash your financial targets. The best financial advisers act as financial coaches, and coaching extends beyond just financial advice. Your financial coach may help you with career advice, crucial decision making as well as helping you make financial plans. They will challenge you and remind you why you are making these sacrifices. The Dulwich Charity Lunch This year the Dulwich Charity Lunch raised a fabulous £2,415 for Link Age Southwark
The lunch, now in its 20th year, is held every December (except last year!) and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. We were back at The Lordship for the second time. They kindly closed the pub for the event. 54 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party. The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came along and enjoyed the day. Watch this space for the next one!

The Big Give
Local Charity Raises Over £26,000 Towards Their Services For Older People

ink Age Southwark were selected to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign, between Tuesday 30th November and Tuesday 7th December 2021. They were delighted to exceed their £26,000 target, raising a total of £26,945 towards their free transport services. The local charity offers friendly volunteer support for people aged over 60 and those living with dementia, including befriending and group activities. Funds raised from the Christmas Challenge will support their service users to attend the exercise and activity groups they run across the borough. Link Age Southwark’s provision of transport includes volunteer drivers, an accessible minibus and escorted taxis for those living with dementia.

They provided 4000 transport journeys in the year before the pandemic and are now working hard to reconnect older people with their communities. A record £24.1 million was raised overall for the 928 charities taking part in the Christmas Challenge. As one of the charities involved, Link Age Southwark secured match funding from individual pledgers and their Big Give Champion, The Julia and Hans Rausing Trust, who doubled donations from the public during the week-long campaign. The charity was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone involved in their fundraising success. he long trudge through Christmas into new year is an often arduous and fruitless time for Dulwich Hamlet, commonly leaving the Pink and Blues staring down the barrel of a lowly league position with the whiff of relegation cordite wafting around Champion Hill’s nostrils. But this year it seems the Covid might have had the serendipitous effect of removing any such olfactory unpleasantness as the pride of East Dulwich find themselves looking up at the stars of promotion from anything but the gutter. Longstanding Hamlet heroic helmsman Gavin Rose has forged and tempered this season's squad into a hardened and steely razor-edged blade of an outfit that would leave a Middle Earth elf pondering long and hard what aspect of the blacksmith’s art they had neglected during their apprenticeship. Emblematic of this excellence was a coruscant contest against Britain’s most senior portmanteau club and fellow high-flyers Ebbsfleet Unite; who, after looking sharp in the first half, were blunted, sheathed and put to the sword by a belligerent Hamlet in front of a giddy rabble at a ram-packed and rocking Champion Hill. Having trailed 2-1 at the

break, the Sons of Edgar Kail stiffened the sinews, summoned up the blood, and laid siege to the Kentish men’s crumbling defences, before leaving the field muddy but victorious at 5-2. Heady stuff.
