St Christopher’s Arts Project Reopens

'Birth ’til Death: Scrolled Life Stories' is Shortlisted for UK Exhibition of the Year

The exhibition From Birth ’til Death: Scrolled Life Stories reopens this week at the Horniman Museum. Through a dramatic instillation of giant painted papyrus scrolls suspended from the ceiling, visitors can learn about the lives and stories of South London’s different communities. From scrolls that tell the stories of recent arrivals, to Londoners whose families have lived here for generations, the exhibition tells the stories of resilience, joy and heartache that is at the centre of all our lives. The project was a result of a partnership between artist R.M. Sánchez-Camus, who was based at St Christopher’s at the time, working with the Horniman’s Community Learning Team and community partner organisations including Arts Network, Three Cs, and Guys & St Thomas’ Health Inclusion Team asylum seekers hostel. On re-opening, the exhibition will also celebrate its recent shortlisting as UK Exhibition of the Year, for the prestigious Museum and Heritage Awards. R.M. Sánchez-Camus says: “Bringing local community voices into a gallery exhibition is an important marker of validation for those who are often not seen or heard, yet who carry rich and important experiences we can all learn from. The Horniman has a rich collection of objects that tell the story of who we are as people on this earth and this exhibition contributes to that collection with the life stories of present-day Londoners. “Our personal collection of life stories make up the museum of self, continuously archived throughout our life. Each of us is a micro-museum, carrying the history and stories of the times we live in. And what better way to know ourselves than by understanding others.”

Open until the 13 June in the Horniman’s

contemporary arts space The Studio. Entry to the Horniman, and From Birth ’til Death: Scrolled Life Stories, is free, however visitors (including Members) need to pre-book a timed slot via horniman.ac.uk. For more about St Christopher’s Hospice see: www.stchristophers.org.uk

The University of the Third Age, or u3a, is an international movement which began in France in the 1970s and spread internationally, reaching the United Kingdom in the 1980s. In France it remains primarily educational but in this country it became a broader self-help group for retired and semi-retired people. The UK network now comprises over 1000 u3as, with a total membership of over 400,000. Each u3a is an independent charity with links to a national umbrella body, the Third Age Trust. The Trust has launched the first “u3a day”, originally to have taken place in 2020 but postponed to Wednesday 2 June 2021. Its aim is to promote awareness of the u3a; to help challenge negative perceptions of older adults; and to invite other Third Agers to learn how u3a supports the lives of older adults. Dulwich & District u3a was founded as recently as 2015 but already has some 700 members and 90 interest groups covering a broad range of interests from art, astronomy, birdwatching, boules and cryptic crosswords to table tennis, ukulele playing, walks and Zumba gold. Some of the groups have had to suspend their activities during the pandemic, but many have continued to operate via Zoom. And our open meetings with a guest speaker, normally held monthly, have continued on Zoom with two meetings in most months. You can learn more at our website:

COVID-19 restrictions limit what we can do on 2 June but we shall have a stall in the garden of Dulwich Picture Gallery – do come along to find out more! And our creative writing group will be reading outside Forest Hill Library. In 2020 the Third Age Trust updated its branding, so the logo no longer includes the words “University of the Third Age”, but instead “learn, laugh, live” – a good summary of the range of our activities.

It is not about trying to change the way things are but about accepting things as they are - the pleasant and unpleasant - and being able to respond to life’s ups and downs with greater freedom. The session will include two mindfulness practices, alongside overview of mindfulness and opportunity for discussion.
