Welcome to SE23 I had hoped that this year would have a better start than the end of last year but unfortunately it has not been the case. My father passed away in late January and just last month, my dear friend and colleague, Sarah Pylas also died. It is hard to find the words to describe how sad I am feeling. Sarah was first and foremost a friend (we met through the East Dulwich WI) but she came to work with me in September 2013. As well as sorting out my websites, Sarah went on to write the wonderful Around Dulwich column. Some of you may know that we took part in Ashley Banjo’s Secret Dance Crew with friends from the EDWI. It was a amazing if nerve-wracking time and Sarah was fantastic. As my tribute to Sarah I felt it would be fitting to re-run The Last Word interview which first appeared in December 2013 on page 24. I have also printed some of the lovely photos Sarah submitted to go with her column over the years. I know that many people will miss Sarah; her husband Pan and son Zachy, her family and the very many friends in the area and around the World. RIP. We do have the Dulwich Festival to look forward to this month. Check out the Artists’ Open House preview on pages 30 & 31. Until next time.

Business Profile
SOUTH LONDON PREMIER JEWELLER After more than 8 years of shared stories and wonderful projects, it’s time for us to take a break. A note from the owner, Cata Rosca. WE’RE CLOSING DOWN
MASSIVE DISCOUNTS
Over the last 8 years, Lila’s small but passionate team has been a companion for thousands of SE London residents in their jewellery adventures. We started mainly as a vintage and antique jewellery boutique with an award winning shop design and great professionals and we developed our range of products and services constantly since our early days. We brought together incredible pieces from the late 18th century with amazing new designs created in-house with a focus on sustainability. We’ve repaired thousands of pieces, we remodeled and re-set incredible stones from family heirloom jewellery, thus becoming a part in your joy of keeping the loved ones close to heart. We issued hundreds of valuation reports to help with your insurance or legal requirements. We were there for so many of you creating pieces for your special moments: engagement, wedding, new babies or losing somebody special. Thank you to all of you entrusting us with your most precious possessions. It’s not easy to say “Good bye!” to all of this, especially when we started reaping the fruits of all the hard work put into it with great growth on all of our services. However, personal events happening lately have shifted my perspective on work and life balance and I decided it’s best to move on. Lila’s will close its door on 30th June 2022, so we’re giving it a final push for the last couple of months and we hope to see as many of you in the meantime.
All our current stock is going on sale, so if you hesitated on a piece before, now is the time to go for it. Many of the pieces are one-offs and they’ll be going for half the price. Our Fairtrade range, local designer pieces and chains, usually not discounted will go down in price as well. So go on our website or come instore to get a great deal for some truly special jewellery.

In Praise of Cherry Blossom
Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
T
here’s nothing prettier than pink cherry blossom against a clear blue sky – a sign winter is behind us and spring is here. Most cherries flower from March to May and there’s a type of blossom to suit all tastes from delicate, single blooms to blousy doubles, in whites and the palest pinks to bright candy floss pink. Cherries are a great choice of tree for London gardens as many varieties don’t get too big and the foliage colours beautifully in autumn giving another season of interest. Here are 10 of the best.
Pale Pink Prunus ‘Pink Shell’ - A small, elegant tree with spreading branches and delicate single, pale pink flowers – a lovely contrast to the light green leaves. This is one of the prettiest cherries and widely available. 4m. Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ - A compact cherry tree/shrub - with delicate very pale pink flowers and wonderful autumn foliage. Ideal for containers. 2.5m. Prunus ‘Accolade’ - A graceful spreading tree with a cloud of large pastel pink semi-double flowers in April/May. It also has smooth reddish brown bark and fiery orange foliage in autumn. Height 6/7m.
Brighter Pink Prunus ‘Kursar’ - A small tree with clusters of dramatic deep pink single blooms in March to April. It has a neat upright habit and the new bronze foliage turns green then red/gold in autumn. 3/4m Prunus ‘Okame’ - A lovely tree with masses of single candy floss pink flowers in March/early April and orangey red autumn foliage. 4m Prunus ‘Pink Perfection’ - An elegant spreading cherry with masses of frilly double, bright pink flowers from April to May. Delicate bronze coloured leaves when young turn green then orange in autumn. 5m.
Whites Prunus ‘Shogetsu’ - Considered one of the finest Japanese cherries with pale pink flowers April/ May quickly fading to clouds of white blossom. It has lovely orange/red leaves in autumn. 4m. 12 | SE23 - May 2022
Prunus ‘The Bride’ - This is a dinky tree with a rounded shape, covered in large single white flowers with dark red centres in spring. Ideal for growing in a container or border. 2m. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ - Unlike the others here, the tiny white flowers of this tree are now getting to the end of their season having flowered from October. A stunning tree for winter, lovely underplanted with winter flowering Cyclamen hederofolium. 8m. Prunus serrula - This gets bigger than the others here but it’s lovely as a multi-stem, which tend to stay smaller. It has small white flowers in April but is grown more for the polished coppery bark that shines out in the winter. Its leaves turn a lovely yellow in autumn. 10m.
Companions Cherries look great underplanted with a mass of Crocus tommasinnianus or Cyclamen coum. Helebores also look great interplanted with low growing ferns or try Epimedium x youngianum ‘Niveum’ – a fab semi evergreen ground cover plant with delicate white flowers in spring.
Care Cherries tolerate semi-shade, but they do best in the sun, in well drained soil. Any pruning such as removing dead, diseased damaged or crossing branches needs to be done in the summer to avoiding diseases. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake.

Quick & Easy Asparagus
Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
T
his is always a super busy time of year with weddings and events ramping up, new enquiries flooding in (the sunshine seems to make people propose!!) and the garden suddenly springing into action too. Even more than ever I struggle to find enough hours in the day and this lovely spring recipe is a firm favourite of mine. Not only is it super quick and easy to put together, but it includes one of my absolute favourite seasonal foods – asparagus! It is one of those recipes you can throw together if friends pop in unexpectedly for a relaxed weekend lunch, and really does taste delicious. I love the way the bright green asparagus really ‘zings’. Serves 6-8 Preparation time 5-10 minutes Cooking time 20-25 minutes
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •
25g Butter 2 tablespoons Olive Oil 300g Chicken cut into strips 1 small onion finely sliced 2 Cloves garlic; crushed 375g Dried pasta penne 1,100g fine asparagus 1,250g mascarpone Salt and freshly ground pepper Zest of 1 Lemon 2 tablespoons fresh parsley; finely chopped
Instructions Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan over a moderate heat, sauté the chicken for 15 minutes, then add the onions and garlic and sauté for another 5 minutes or until softened. Cook the pasta as per pack instructions, adding the asparagus 1 minute before the cooking time is complete. Drain the pasta and add to the pan along with the mascarpone, seasoning and lemon zest. Stir to combine, then heat through. Sprinkle with parsley and serve immediately with a green salad. Enjoy! 14 | SE23 - May 2022

Daily Stretching
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com About Daily Stretching We all know we should stretch more often and regularly. We also know that a good stretching routine will improve flexibility and range of motion in the joints. This month, I want to talk about how daily stretching not only improves your physical health but also your mental health.
The Science Behind Stretching Stretching contributes to parasympathetic dominance within the nervous system, meaning it helps us to feel calmer and more relaxed. It also releases endorphins: neurotransmitters that interact with pain receptors to give us a pleasant tingling sensation. Stretching reduces the muscle tension, thereby reversing the cycle of tension, then tightening, and pain. Stretching has also been shown to increase serotonin levels — the hormone that helps regulate our mood, reduce stress, and makes us feel good overall— which causes a decrease in depression and anxiety. Scientific studies have shown that daily stretching leads to a decrease in cortisol levels, known as the stress hormone, by 20%. It can also boost testosterone levels up to 25%. Testosterone isn’t just a male hormone; everyone has it, though some people have more than others. In women, it is produced by the ovaries and adrenal glands. The testosterone in our bodies helps us to maintain normal metabolic function, bone and muscle strength, and cognitive skills. It also increases the release of dopamine: a chemical that allows you to feel pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation.
Daily Stretching Made Easy I want to talk about a couple of stretches that I do every day; the first is the power pose. It’s pretty simple: plant your feet hip-width apart, point your chin up slightly, and stretch out your arms with palms facing upwards. Hold this for a magic minute – two if you like – and you’ll start to get that tingly sensation I talked about earlier. Your arms may feel a little fatigued but stick with it for the full benefits. Another easy stretch I like to do is hold one hand in the other up above my head, and just flex 16 | SE23 - May 2022
off to one side, changing direction after about 30 seconds. You can even practice stretching at your desk by gently rolling your neck from left to right. Other areas you may want to focus on are: your calves, your hamstrings (back of your legs), your hip flexors (the pelvis) and quadriceps (front of the thigh). Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also important. Start by holding a stretch between 15 and 30 seconds. Once you notice that you can hold the stretch for longer move to 60 seconds hold of each position.
What Works For You It’s all about doing what works for you. So, I want you to explore some stretches and find out what feels good. Perhaps you could set a timer for once an hour to remind you to get up and have a go. It’s a really great opportunity to get more energy into your day – and get a bit of a cheap-fill of endorphins too!

Financial Matters
With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.com
Insurance – what you need & what you don’t Insurance is a crucial part of financial planning. Having the right insurance could get you out of a hole at a time of desperation so should be taken seriously. But which insurance is non-essential, and which should you buy if you don’t already have cover?
If you are single and have no dependants With no one to worry about but yourself, you may be tempted not to think about insurance at all. Two insurances to consider however would be income protection and critical illness cover. Income protection would ensure that your income continued if you fell ill or had an accident and were unable to work. The policy would pay you a tax-free income for a specific period or until you were able to return to work. This could prove vital, especially if you had significant financial commitments such as a mortgage to consider. Worth contemplating, especially if you are selfemployed. Critical illness cover would pay you a tax-free lump sum if you were diagnosed with a critical illness such as cancer or heart attack. This payment could be viewed as a compensation payment for the bad new of such a diagnosis. You pay a monthly premium which is based on your age and health at time of application and premiums stay the same for the life of the policy if you go for guaranteed cover.
If you have a family If you don’t have any dependants, life insurance may not be a necessary expense for you. If however, members of your family are dependent on your income, life insurance is a must. Life insurance pays out a tax-free lump sum or income on your death. As it is underwritten on age and health at time of application so there should be an advantage in taking it out as early as possible when you are young and healthy. 20 | SE23 - May 2022
When taking out a mortgage Mortgage protection would pay off your mortgage or loan if you were to die. Typically, the insured amount would be the amount borrowed on the mortgage. The insurance cover would decrease in line with the mortgage as repayments reduced the balance. Payment protection insurance (PPI) is quite different and would cover your mortgage repayments if you were unable to work. This insurance earned a bad reputation a few years back when banks automatically included it when applying for loans or mortgages for customers without them being aware! This doesn’t necessarily mean PPI is bad.
In later life Whole of life insurance could be set up to pay off your inheritance tax bill when you die. The policy holder pays premiums for the rest of their lives. On their death, the insurance policy’s proceeds would be used to pay off any inheritance tax bill. The policy would be written in trust to ensure it did not form part of the estate thereby increasing the inheritance tax liability. This area of financial advice can be complex so seek independent financial advice before taking the plunge.
What you don’t need You can insure almost anything or any eventuality nowadays. Deciding what you need or don’t need can be a challenge. Before taking out any insurance, consider the risk. Think whether you would likely make a successful claim on the insurance policy and weigh up the cost vs the potential benefit. If you’re a fan of the NHS for example and unlikely to ever go private, taking out private medical insurance may be a waste of money. Our advice? Seek advice from an independent financial adviser.

Ageing Cats & Dogs Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
L
ike humans, cats and dogs may suffer significant changes in cognitive function as they age. Canine and feline cognitive dysfunction is in some ways not dissimilar to human Alzheimer’s, in that both involve amyloid plaques, impaired glucose metabolism, and free oxygen radical damage. It is thought that half of the cat population over 11 will suffer some some sort of decline and dogs may succumb earlier. Owners can be caught out in two ways. The first mistake is to assume that any cognitive decline is just a matter of old age and that nothing can be done. This is actually incorrect as changes in behaviour can be early signs of a treatable medical condition. Additionally, behavioural change can also mean your older animal is in pain and you certainly want to be able to relieve that. The second error is to interpret behavioural changes associated with cognitive decline as your animal choosing to be naughty, wilful or spoilt. This can really catch owners out. A classic scenario is sudden changes in elimination where the housetrained cat or dog starts to have accidents indoors. So many of us fail to make the connection that there may be a medical explanation and just blame the animal for doing something we feel it knows it should not. There are some key areas to consider:
Social Behaviour Your normally friendly cat or dog may become much more clingy and attention seeking, much more withdrawn or not appear to recognise you.
Activity Self-neglect, stops grooming herself, less exploratory/ disinterested and less responsive to events and interactions, eats less or constantly asks for food.
Anxiety & Irritability Inability to settle, increased vocalisation, new aggressive behaviour.
Change In Sleep Patterns Often awake at night but sleeps more in the day, restless at night. 22 | SE23 - May 2022
Confusion & Spatial Disorientation Staring into space or fixating on objects, getting stuck in corners, inability to navigate familiar territory, getting lost in familiar locations.
Diagnosis & Treatment All of the above may be symptoms of a host of treatable medical conditions so a full veterinary check is crucial. Once other medical disorders are excluded only then can a diagnosis of cognitive dysfunction be made. Even then owners should not give up hope, there are medications and dietary supplements that may help slow the speed of decline and treat any associated anxiety. Disorientation can be reduced by keeping home environments as predictable as possible- don’t move food bowls or litter trays around, avoid moving furniture. Keeping your pet physically and mentally active and at a good weight can possibly help prevent Cognitive Dysfunction and promote overall health. Keeping up with play and brainwork, at a level your pet can cope with, is also important. Most of all, changes in behaviour are often the first sign there is a medical issue, so a trip to the vet is imperative.
ADVERTORIAL
Hormone Therapy: Is it for me?
F
www.lilibalanceclinic.co.uk
or some women, the perimenopause and menopause can bring a confusing array of new symptoms such as poor sleep, irritability, low mood and brain fog. The typical symptoms of hot flushes and night sweats often do not occur until a few years into the perimenopause. Women can feel like they are going mad, can’t cope at work and struggle to maintain intimate relationships. Lifestyle measures can help such as diet, exercise, reducing alcohol and caffeine and cutting out sugar. But for some this is not enough. So who should take hormone replacement therapy? For the vast majority of women aged 40-60 years, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. Every woman is different and needs to be considered individually. Taking HRT before the age of 50 is not associated with any increased risk. The risk of breast cancer has been a reason that women have avoided taking HRT or have been declined HRT by health professionals. We now know that the risk of breast cancer can be reduced by taking bioidentical oestrogen, and that the previous Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study over-reported the risks of breast cancer. To put some perspective on this, drinking a glass of wine each night increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer more than HRT. Obesity (BMI greater 30) more than doubles the risk of developing breast cancer over 5 years. So it’s important to remember that HRT is just one risk factor for breast cancer and this risk is actually very low for the majority of women.
Which hormones do I need? Most of the symptoms of the perimenopause and menopause are caused by low levels of progesterone and oestrogen. Oestrogen is important for body temperature regulation, blood flow, memory and concentration, mood, libido, bone health, muscle mass, collagen levels in skin and a healthy heart. Progesterone also has many benefits such as mood regulation, improved sleep, protection against endometrial cancer, bone protection, energy and maintaining muscle mass. Progesterone levels decline faster than oestrogen levels during the perimenopause which can result in irregular cycles, heavy periods, headaches, and mood swings. So progesterone therapy is often more important than oestrogen in the initial treatment of the peri-menopause. There is a misconception that women who have had a hysterectomy do not
need progesterone, however progesterone and oestrogen have complimentary effects and are best given together. For some women testosterone replacement may also be helpful for symptoms such as low libido and energy.
How long should I take HRT? You can take HRT for as long as you need it. Some women take it for two to three years, others choose to take it well into their 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s! There is no need to stop taking HRT provided you are in good health and have annual reviews with your doctor.
What are the benefits? Most women take HRT to relieve symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, headaches, low mood and sleep problems. Other benefits include protection against thinning of the bones, cardiovascular protection, improvement in urogenital symptoms and sexual function, improved cognitive function and memory.
What Is Bioidentical HRT? Bioidentical hormones are similar in structure and chemical composition to your body’s own hormones. They are produced from natural sources such as yams. Older forms of synthetic HRT have a higher risk and side effect profile. Bioidentical hormones include oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone. They are better tolerated than synthetic hormones and their dose can be easily adjusted to a woman’s needs. Dr Tanya Patrick | info@lilibalanceclinic.co.uk SE23 - May 2022 | 23

The Last Word - Sarah Pylas
This article was first printed in SE22 in December 2013 | www.grenglish.co.uk Do you belong to any groups? I have been a member of the East Dulwich WI for 3-years and I still don’t know how to make jam. I go along for the wine.
Coffee or tea? Where? Tea! Usually at home, out of a ginormous mug. So ginormous, the tea often gets cold before I get to the bottom of it, so I just keep refilling it all day long.
Describe your perfect weekend Family, friends, roast chicken, red wine.
What is your favourite place to eat?
Sarah is a local blogger who writes the award nominated blog Grenglish. She has also contributed articles to the Huffington Post and Red online; blogs and tweets on behalf of the East Dulwich WI; and recently started looking after SE Magazines’ blog, Around Dulwich.
How long have you lived in the area and what brought you here? Love. I moved to the area around 6-years ago to live with the man who would later become my husband. I was living and working in West London when we first met, so it was not the most convenient decision at the time, but one I made with my heart. Ahhhhh…
The one thing you couldn’t do without? WI-FI. Not only is my job writing on the internet, but it is also where I do all my banking, organise our family calendar, pay for school lunches, book flights, research the best offers on Spiderman costumes; and watch box-sets of all the shows I missed when they came out on the telly.
I have been gluten-free for about 10-months, so menu choices can sometimes be quite limiting when eating out. However, most restaurants in East Dulwich are very good at advising which dishes are safe to eat. Although, you can’t go wrong with a steak at Franklins. The confit chicken with a side of spicy courgette chips at The Actress is pretty tasty too!
The best kept secret... Jo Partridge on North Cross Road. Everyone assumes this is my natural hair colour, but I am really grey underneath and book in for a cut & colour every 7-weeks ssssssshhhhhh. Ask for Emily, Miranda or Jackie. They are miracle workers.
Your favourite place to go for a drink? Before our son was born, my husband and I loved Franklins on a Saturday afternoon. Now, if we fancy a cheeky glass of red, we will most likely go to The Herne, which is in walking distance from our house and has a play area to entertain our 4-year old. The Actress is great for catching up with friends over a glass (or 3) of fizz, but on a recent school mum’s night out, I discovered The Rose and it might be my new favourite.
The book I’m reading at the moment.. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) by The Bloggess.
The most famous person you’ve met?
My secret ambition..
Lady Gaga follows me on Twitter, does that count? Note from Editor – Yes!
See above. To be able to turn my blog into a book would be amazing.

Dulwich Festival 13-22 May, 2022
Now in its 29th year, the Dulwich Festival welcomes the live return of the Artists’ Open House event this month celebrating the diverse local creative talent in Dulwich and surrounding areas.
T
his year a staggering 400 local artists will participate, in 180 venues, many of them opening their homes and studios to the public, providing a personal dialogue and insight into their work, as well as the opportunity to purchase directly from them. This year’s AOH includes a variety of artforms: from fine art to craft and ceramics; furniture and homewares; photography and prints; sculpture and street art; jewellery and textiles. The event also affords a rare opportunity to explore the diverse range of local artistic spaces; from pop-up galleries at national heritage houses, to studio-lined cobbled Mews and creative enclaves hidden beneath railway arches. AOH has been held online for the past two years and this year’s event gives a glimpse of brilliant new work from artists and makers emerging from the months of the pandemic. Former fashion designer turned internationally renowned sculptor, Nicole Farhi, will exhibit her new collection ‘Womankind’, at Dulwich Prep London. The work is a study in the power of touch – the importance of which is now valued all the more – and concentrates on fragments of the female body as if looking through the lens of a camera. The sculptures celebrate the bonds of female friendship, kindness, empathy and love. Amy Gardner, a multidisciplinary artist in Camberwell, also celebrates womanhood. Her fine art and prints respectfully nod to the movement and ‘history of effort’ gifted from previous generations of women.
Over in Forest Hill, Painter, Ian Robinson, works with iconic retro objects from UK pop culture, inspired by people’s passions and their collections, whilst Emily Jo Gibbs, creates handstitched Portraits and Still Lifes. Examples of her work are to be found in The Victoria and Albert Museum. Inspired by her Peckham surroundings, visual artist, Katrina Adams, will present vividly abstract two- and three-dimensional artworks. Also in Peckham, Mark Pearson, will exhibit figurative paintings of his neighbourhood, many of which were heavily influenced by the newly created pedestrianised spaces during lockdown. ‘Love in the Time of Covid’ is the title given to photographer Patrice d’Hotman de Villier’s playful body of work, created during lockdown and to be displayed at the Old College Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Samer Moukarzel, another photographer, cycled around Dulwich during lockdown capturing portraits of families through their windows and front doors. ‘Portrait at a Distance’ will be exhibited at the Peace and Riot cafe. Sarah Eyton’s ‘Flowers in the Time of Corona’ is a collection of layered, evocative photographic images made in response to the lockdowns and reflecting the challenges of isolation. Amongst the artists exhibiting at The Paxton in Gipsy Hill is Jodie Glen-Martin, who created a daily butterfly during lockdown using box-fresh acrylic paint and metal leaf in 2D, which she then posted on Instagram. The finished piece, which took a year to make, will

be shown in its entirety for the first time at the festival. Also featuring is Chioma Abalogu, a Nigerian contemporary painter, known as Omj Arts, who began her professional career during the pandemic and portrays African culture and traditions. Bruce Mark, a glass maker in central London for 18 years who has recently added wood sculpture to his repertoire, will also be exhibiting for the first time at AOH. The Michael Ruh Glass Studio, which counts Calvin Klein and The New Craftsmen among its clients, will be among the participating creative workshops in Parade Mews in Tulse Hill. Similarly set amongst ancient cobblestones is Havelock Walk. The former industrial Mews, one of Forest Hill’s treasures, is now home to a diverse community of creatives who will open their studios, including Royal Academician, David Mach, known globally for his large-scale sculpture, collages and installations. Grove Vale Ceramics will present contemporary works, from distinctive tableware to decorative and sculptural artworks, and the ceramicists from The Arches Studios, an artistic oasis under the Peckham Rye railway arches, will open their workshops. Further ceramic artists include, Rowena Brown, who will showcase her sculptures of abandoned architectural forms, constructed out of heavily pigmented black clay and Daniel Reynolds who will display abstract mobiles, lighting, and large ceramic vessels. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. ESEA

The Last Word – Miguel de Melo What do you most value about the area? It’s been amazing to get an opportunity to gain so much experience in macro photography in this area, it was an overwhelming experience finding new species and subjects every day during lockdown. Now as part of the Dulwich Festival ‘Artists’ Open House’, we are opening the garden where I took thousands of photos during that period and showcasing a large collection of the best photos. The social media response I got during lockdown was overwhelming, so we thought it was a fabulous idea to share my images with the community in the space they were taken.
What one thing would you change? I would love to see the bridge in Sydenham Woods fixed and opened back to the public, finding a way that wouldn’t damage the trees. It’s such a shame it’s been closed for so long. I get the sense everyone would really like to use it.
The one thing you couldn’t do without? Miguel de Melo is a Portuguese Photographer and Digital Artist with a passion for nature. A Data Architect by day, he is well established outside of the 9-5 as a Digital Artist and Live Music Photographer. Moving to Tottenham Hale in 2016 where most of his studio work took place, he swapped the Marshes and Canal sides for the leafy greenery of Sydenham Hill during lockdown and discovered a whole new natural world by Sydenham woods.
How long have you lived in the area? Since the beginning of lockdown - Feb/March 2020.
What brought you here? Love. Claire and I met before lockdown and lived in separate locations, we decided at the time it would be more practical for me to move to Sydenham Hill temporarily due to travel restrictions.
What has changed most during that time? Noise pollution and volume of traffic. During lockdown there was a mesmerizing calm floating in the air, felt almost as if time had stopped and we were living in an alternate reality. Since lockdown restrictions were lifted the noise of cars, motorbikes, buses, have added to the roaring murmur of this concrete jungle we live in, clearly reflecting the busy lives that surround us. 32 | SE23 - May 2022
Sourdough bread from the Butchery in Forest Hill. It’s the best.
Describe your perfect weekend If I was to spend my perfect weekend in Forest Hill, I would surely be popping to East Dulwich to buy some Cheese, and then visit the market. After a walk in the Sydenham Woods with Oscar the black Lab, I’d come back home to enjoy a lovely barbecue with the family. Pop to central London in the evening to meet friends. Sunday either get some lovely breakfast from Canvas & Cream or a gastro pub lunch at the Signal, followed by a relaxed rest of the day.
If money was no object.. Probably set up a woodturning workshop and a Photography studio big enough to photograph horses and aeroplanes.
The book I’m reading at the moment.. The Nepalese Shamanic path
My secret ambition.. To become a woodturner crafter extraordinaire with a resin embalming twist .....................................................................................
