Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford I’m delighted to welcome you to the May / June issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. For the first time in a year it really does feel like we are on the road to recovery. I know it’s baby steps but at least we are definitely moving in the right direction.

This month Under The Hammer page 32

At SK we certainly don’t want to dwell on the past year, but I feel over these next couple of months we are going to receive some extraordinary stories that need to be heard, just like Angela Sellars. Angela has spent the last year working on Covid wards, read her remarkable story on page 14. I’d also like to add a personal thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Manchester Rugby Club, where I received my first jab a few weeks ago. You guys along with all the other centres are doing a wonderful job, your communities really do appreciate it. Finally with the shops, bars, restaurants, gyms and clubs now open, please continue to support your local community and businesses. They really do need you now more than ever. Cheers

I

A little Miami Spice

am writing this recipe on the 12th April – a crucial milestone on the back to whatever becomes normality. It is a beautiful day and the thought of the chance of inviting my family and friends for a mini party in the garden has given me the inspiration for this recipe. I first tried these tortillas in Miami – a long time ago it seems! – and I thought they were delicious. The recipe would also work with raw salmon or tuna – make sure it’s super fresh though. Spicy crab tortillas (makes 8) 400g picked white crabmeat 50g coriander, finely chopped, plus extra to garnish 8 white corn tortillas 1 large avocado, crushed 1 tbsp red onion, finely chopped Dash of chilli oil Zest and juice of 1/2 lime, plus extra limes to garnish 200g white cabbage, shredded 1/2 red onion, sliced 5 radishes, sliced 2 tbsp mayonnaise Sour cream Sriracha sauce Handful of coriander

10 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Start by making the guacamole by crushing the avocado and mixing with the chopped red onion, chilli oil and lime zest and juice. Then the slaw – just mix the cabbage, sliced red onion, radishes and mayonnaise together and season to taste. Mix the crabmeat and coriander together and then we are ready to go. If you are making this ahead keep it in the fridge and make sure the guacamole is covered properly by pushing down the clingfilm until it touches the surface to stop it going brown. When you are ready to serve heat up the tortillas in a dry pan and keep warm in a clean t towel while you do the rest. Let the guests serve themselves and assemble the tortillas by spreading each tortilla with guacamole, top with the slaw then the crabmeat and sour cream. Drizzle a little sriracha sauce over and a few leaves of coriander then wrap up and eat! A little lime juice is good too!

Healthcare

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: A NURSE’S PERSPECTIVE IN 2021

D

uring the pandemic, our healthcare services have faced challenges beyond anything we could have imagined before the virus broke out. Angela Sellars, nurse and Deputy Manager of dementia care specialists Ambiance Care, has spent over a year working on the Covid wards. Here, she offers a nurse’s perspective on the pandemic and her expert insights into the situation now, as it unfolds. “I qualified as a nurse in September 2019 and began working on the ward where I’d spent my last student placement. Just three months in, the pandemic broke out, and everyone became anxious - not least the hospital staff. We didn’t know how big an issue Covid-19 would become, nor how we would care for patients with this new virus. As the weeks passed, our first Covid patients began to trickle in. We had to wear PPE at all times, other than to eat. Any patient who tested positive was sent to the ‘Covid wards’ regardless of any other medical conditions they might have, and staffing levels were reduced as workers were taken down by the virus. By June, wards were closed to create new respiratory wards and high dependency units, and three theatres were given over to caring for Covid patients - one for those at end-of-life, so they could be with their families.

14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Breaks were few and far between - it wasn’t unheard of for staff to use a commode in an empty room, we couldn’t just nip to the loo. This, on top of working with extremely poorly patients who had an illness we knew so little about. When the second wave began in October, we saw more young patients with fewer pre-existing conditions. Although we were better prepared, I saw more deaths than I ever imagined I would. Members of the same family would look on as loved ones lost their battle, and we lost a staff nurse too. I can’t even describe the great sense of loss of one of our own. Now, in 2021, we’re faced with the after-effects of lockdown, and it’s people with dementia who have suffered most. The Alzheimer’s Society reports that symptoms have got worse for 4 out of 5 people with dementia and over a quarter can no longer perform daily tasks. Deaths both from the virus and other causes in this group has skyrocketed. Now that vaccinations are rolling out rapidly, I hope the country will be able to provide better support for those who need it. I encourage you to have the vaccinations if you can - they are rigorously tested and they will enable us to reconnect again. Finally, I am starting to see some hope - I hope you can, too.” Angela Sellars Ambiance Care www.ambiancecare.co.uk

BUDGET 2021 – The wait for the bill is over

W

e have all been waiting. Waiting for our turn in the vaccine queue, waiting to hug relatives and friends, waiting to go out, waiting to go to the pub, waiting to have a hip operation, waiting to book a holiday with confidence, and waiting for Rishi Sunak to tell us how on earth the economy can recover from the damage wreaked by Covid-19. At least the wait is over with that one. The Chancellor of the Exchequer presented the 2021 Budget yesterday bringing into sharp focus the continuing cost of the cursed coronavirus. Cover to cover the 2021 Budget runs to 107 pages and catalogues the damage inflicted by coronavirus and the extraordinary measures required to combat it. Stating that the government’s coronavirus spending is £407bn and rising, no chancellor in peacetime has ever needed to, nor continued to, borrow so much. Since March 2020 there have been various schemes, many of which came with catchy names, and many with acronyms. The Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) for small businesses; the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (JRS), which introduced the word furlough into common usage, and Eat Out To Help Out which encouraged us back into pubs and restaurants last summer. Surely joining their ranks will be ‘super-deduction’ which might be the first time a capital allowance strategy enters common parlance. Basically ‘super-deduction’ is an incentive for growth, encouraging businesses to buy plant and equipment. For two years starting from 1 April 2021, a business buying equipment, will be able to claim tax relief of 25p for every £1 spent. In the tax return the price of the equipment, eg a £1,000 laptop is multiplied by 1.30 and then tax relief of 19% is applied to the total, resulting in 25% relief. Perhaps the ‘super-deduction’ allowance is a method of getting us used to a figure of 25% because from 1 April 2023 the main corporation

16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

tax rate will increase from 19% to 25%. The ‘main’ corporation tax rate applies to company profits over £250k, but the rate of 19% will still be in force for companies’ profits up to £50k, but between £50k and £250k profits will be on a sliding scale between 19% and 25%. This is a steep tax rise and a complete anathema to a Tory Chancellor, but I don’t think it is a surprise to anyone. The return to a tiered corporation tax regime will necessitate a re-think of current strategies commonly employed in respect of extracting profits from the business. Many directors are still smarting from the fact that their tried and trusted method of paying themselves from their small company seemed to attract very little support under the JRS compared to support payments available to their employees and many of the self-employed. Within the 2021 budget there are so many elements to read more about; the extension of stamp duty to 30 June 2021; restart grants for businesses on the high street; minimum wage increases and Personal allowances frozen for 5 years at their new 2021/2022 levels - which are £12,570 (the amount you can earn before paying tax) and £50,270 (the amount you can earn before paying higher rate tax). You’ll get used to those figures. The government is banking (literally) on a return to strong growth in 2022 which will boost tax revenues and is expected to finance the delayed approach to increasing corporation tax, and also allowing the government to wait patiently for the gradual impact of those frozen personal allowances to be felt. I

A COMMUNITY TALE

am going to share with you a story that I came across last year and have been following ever since. It has all the elements that I look for in a good story, especially in these challenging times; it sits at the heart of a community, it is borne out of necessity, it empowers young people and has a heroine! It starts when lockdowns were first implemented across the country last year as people lost their jobs and struggled to make ends meet. This was the reality for many residents of the Kingsmead estate, Hackney. Another reality for the estate were the high levels of youth violence prior to the pandemic. This combination could potentially have led to heightened tensions within the community, but what happened was quite the opposite. This reverse was due to the deliberate intervention of Joyclen Brodie-Mends who “decided to make sure that the estate and the community surrounding it had the support they desperately needed.” Joyclen is the founder of youth organisation 365, helping young people in the area. She set up a community food shop at the beginning of the pandemic as a way of helping those in need. The scale of the task was huge – delivering over 30,000 hot meals and being able to deliver food bags to 300 households over a weekend – Joyclen decided to enlist young people, living locally to help with the project. 20 teenagers signed up to help, from sourcing the food, to packaging and delivery.

18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Speaking about her project and the impact it has had on those she enlisted to help Joyclen said “it’s something engaging and meaningful to do in their communities and gets them off the estates. Young people are usually associated with crime and negativity. We want to empower them and show there is nothing off-limits for young people.” Listening to the teenagers speak of their involvement with the project you get a real sense of pride and purpose. It has also been directly linked to them taking a different direction as Marvin explains “I’ve lived on the estate my whole life. I’ve seen friends go down the bad path, I didn’t want to go down that path.” As one of the older members of the group Marvin also believes he can have a positive impact on the younger ones “I feel like they look up to me and I might change someone’s outlook.” I think it is fair to say, The Community Shop is a success story!

Health & Wellbeing

Do you stop and smell the flowers? More importantly can you smell them?

S

mell plays an important role in our memory, mood, behaviour and emotion. The multibillion pound perfume industry can vouch for that! Have you lost your sense of smell? This is a recognised symptom of Covid-19 and just over half of patients with covid lose their sense of smell and taste, with 1 in 10 the loss can last 8 weeks plus, but for most recovery happens naturally over 2-3 weeks, as with a cold or upper respiratory infection, our sense of smell returns. But for those whom it takes longer, loss of smell or Anosmia can have a significant impact on daily living, affecting eating, mood as people talk about a ‘blunting’ of emotion and feelings of depression. Relationships can be affected also as smell is a sentimental pathway to our memories. Some people can develop Parosmia where smells appear distorted, unpleasant or altered, this can be triggered by fried foods, coffee or even chocolate. Although this isn’t harmful and it is seen as a sign of recovery for covid patients, it can really difficult to live with. Current research suggests the damage to the olfactory neurons by the virus means when repairing themselves the chemical signals they send to the brain are confused in some way. If you are concerned about your loss of smell and it is persistent, you need to seek medical advice to rule out any serious medical conditions. Nosewell created by the British Rhinological Society (BRS) have resources online for Covid-19 patients to help support them through this pandemic though loss of smell doesn’t have to be covid related to be able to get help, further

26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

information is available via a charity https:// abscent.org/ They have partnered with the UK’s leading ENT organisations to provide access to lots of educational information and the latest research from around the world. Justine Jackson our Clinical Aromatherapist can also provide support for you through the recovery process, by using essential oils to create a bespoke ‘smell training kit’ to provide ‘physical therapy’ for your nose at home much like physiotherapy for the body. Smell training is a great technique to help in recover from post-viral and head trauma-induced smell loss. Smell training involves twice daily sniffing of 4 essential oils to help the damaged olfactory nerve to repair itself. It’s not a quick fix and needs to be done over a minimum of 12 weeks but research shows it helps. It only takes a few minutes a day and the benefits, well, you only have to think of freshly baked bread or clean laundry to know it will be worth the effort. If you would like any help or have any questions do get in touch.

Mindset Advice

THE WORLD IS DIFFERENT NOW.

I

am finding each day in my clinics that people are a little more anxious overall, a little less comfortable in situations they were fine in before, a little more worried about finances and the economy and they might be dealing with grief or loss. People are also (of course) missing many aspects of normal life that are still sadly absent. It’s common to hear talk about those who ‘did well’ in the lockdowns and those that didn’t, but I think this is far too primitive an assessment, which ultimately refers to the impact on people’s bank balances, rather than the impact on their mental and physical health or that of their families. No matter how much money someone has saved, they are still almost certainly going to be facing more mental challenges than they were a year ago, there are no true ‘winners’ here, excluding Jeff Bezos of course. The restricted and irregular lives we have been leading have undoubtedly led to a societal rise in residual or background stress. Basic things such as a haircut or a fitness class, going to work, school or university, getting your nails done or going for a coffee with a friend have been off limits, along with so much more, and the impact of this cannot be trivialised. These fundamentals of life build up our resilience over time, and their absence has left an unquantifiable imprint upon us all, the fallout of which has not yet been seen. I am not saying that everyone has mental health problems, I am simply stating that this last year has been traumatic for everyone no matter how ‘well’ they’ve done, and it’s okay to be kind to ourselves and admit that. One of the hardest things I have found professionally in the last year has been that much of the usual recommendations I make to clients to explore between sessions in support of their recoveries have been unavailable. It’s not easy for people who are working on conquering anxieties and phobias to be unable to test their new found courage or resolve, and there are many more problematic examples. It’s hard for people to feel like they are moving forwards in this context, and many people have felt stuck, frozen or paralysed for months now.

28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Crucially however, I must point out that feeling stuck is not the same as being stuck. We need to zoom out and give ourselves far more credit for how well we have done on the whole. It has been incredibly hard to “Keep Calm & Carry On”, but people have done exactly that. People have made progress, they have learned a lot about themselves and the world. People may have survived, rather than thrived in this last year, but this survival, once the dust has settled, will leave them stronger and more resilient for the rest of their lives. This pandemic resulted in the most brutal infringement on our basic human rights since The War, and just by getting to where we are today will have led to personal growth. People have innovated despite their struggles to become more efficient, more effective and learned new skills and ways to communicate, the positive legacy of this innovation will be felt for decades post COVID. Perhaps in the midst of the struggle, you have neglected to notice the possibility that you may be doing better than you thought, that you have been moving forwards more than you realised, and in ways you had not even considered. It is a good idea to review your lockdown and write out what you have achieved and learned, which will benefit your future. No matter how hard it has been, it is time to make peace with it, and to move on with pride and optimism and to allow yourselves to enjoy society continuing to move closer to what we would call ‘normal’. There is still plenty of 2021 left to make it a remarkable year, we just need to keep moving forwards and to never ever stop.

HOW TO CREATE A COSY OUTDOOR SPACE

M

aking a beautiful home isn’t only about the inside. We also choose a home from what is on offer outside the door. Never has our outdoor space been under so much pressure to perform. In and out of lockdown, pubs and restaurants opening and closing, working from home, the office, back home again. Friends on Zoom, then at arms’ length, then in our gardens. But whether we have a warm and sunny Summer or a wet and cool one, we can make outdoors work and here’s how to create this and extend the useable footprint of your home. Think about what you will use it for. Whether it’s a large table for dining with loved ones, a sunny spot to relax in or a place to drink your morning coffee and watch the world go by, it’s essential to realise what it is you plan to do there. There are so many things on the market to help us with inclement Northern weather so don’t you worry about that. Patio heaters and fire pits keeping us toasty, retractable patio awnings for shade and protection from the wet stuff, and side awnings for wind. There’s even now outdoor, waterproof rugs because, let’s be honest, if you’ve put out a pretty rug from your bedroom to welcome your friends then indulged in some fizz, that is probably the end of that. Outdoor lights and cushions – they’ve thought of everything for us.

30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

My mantra – decide on the look and plan the space. Mood boards!! They’re invaluable, even for outdoors. Measure the area you’d like to use and go for it. Should it look as good in the day as in the evening? Then look for lights and warmth. Are you cosying up on a sofa to read a book or making space for people to mill about? Add mirrors, they’re amazing at creating light and colour outdoors, a colourful rug, cushions, wood and foliage. Lots of potted ferns and eucalyptus in shady areas and gorgeous olive trees, evergreens and colourful flowers in the sun. If you have a small patio or a flat with a balcony you can plan on a smaller scale. Use the walls and balcony to hang planters, mirrors, lights, a wooden mandala carving? For shade there’s lots of artificial greenery online, where sunnier spots can be fun for growing your own chillis or tomatoes. Then dress with cushions, add candles to your just-painted table and voila. You’ll use it well during our long, hot summer (positive energy coming your way).

I

Welcome to In Stitches and here’s to warmer, sunny days.

am a great advocate of crafting is a great therapy for anyone, of any age. Your focus and attention is needed for even the smallest of project, and the finished result gives you a warm feeling of success, achievement and fulfilment. We all need a little of that! This is a very straightforward project and useful to all. Make this to hold your tablet, favourite pyjamas or if big enough, a cushion!

ZIP BAG You need: (A) 4 pieces of fabric, 2 for the lining, 2 for the outer side These need to be of equal size (beginners, use 20cm by 15cm) 1 zip - the zip should be longer than the fabric (beginners use a 25cm zip) A Sewing machine, or a Needle and matching threa (B) Sandwich one side of the zip between the edges of one of the lining fabric and one piece the main fabric, with their good sides together. Sew along the tape of the zip, securing the fabric with a machine seam or a backstitch When you have sewn one side of the zip, grab the other two pieces of fabric, and sew them to the other side of the tape in the same way

36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Open the zip two thirds of the way and flip the lining pieces together and outer pieces together good sides facing each other. Draw a 10cm line along one side of the lining. This is your turning hole. Do not sew along this line. Leave the turning hole line, and sew the rest of the way around, 1cm from the edge of the fabric, to sew the bag together. Turn the bag through the right way through the turning hole, and the open zip, pushing the lining into the outer fabric through the zip. Sew up the turning hole. Don’t forget to share your makes with me. You can follow some other great tutorials to help you become a sewing pro, from repairing your clothes, to repairing your machine. A quick tip before I leave you, sharpen your scissors cutting into foil, it’s a great way to get them feeling good again. I have managed to revive my very old pinking shears, dulled by children cutting paper. Have a great day, Happy Sewing! Abi x

Pilates for Horse Riders

o ride effortlessly requires strength, balance and control. To control your horses’ movement you need the ability to move your body correctly and effectively from your pelvis. You also need suppleness to move with your horses’ movement. So many riders spend countless hours schooling their horses and fixing their imbalances, but don’t look at themselves. Horse and rider are a combination. In order for the two of you to shine you need to start taking care of your own health and fitness as well. When training off the horse, you need to look at your body as a whole. It’s not just about fitness or strength exercises, it’s also about breath, body control and how flexible you are in the right areas. Looking at the principles of Pilates it is easy to see how these can be adapted to the requirements needed to be an effective and competent rider. Pilates will teach you better body awareness and more control over your body Alignment – Alignment when riding has a huge impact on your horse’s way of going. If your body is misaligned your weight will be heavier either from side to side or front to back with detrimental affect to your horse’s way of going. You need to think of your pelvis, ribcage & head as building blocks which need to be stacked up over one another for correct alignment. If these boxes are out of alignment your weight will be focused more over one side of the horse.

40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - May/June 2021

Breathing – Breathing the Pilates way, deep and wide into the back of the rib cage helps to increase fresh oxygen into the system and strengthens the abdominals. It is important to learn to breathe properly and to exercise the lungs fully. Learning to breathe properly helps you to remain calm and tension free, thus promoting free flowing movements. Centring (Core Stability) This is the ability to maintain control of the pelvis, spine, and shoulders. Think of your core stablising muscles like the core of an apple, running through the entire length of our spine, from our pelvis to the centre of our head. When riding you need to be able to go with the movement of your horse, to remain toned & balanced. Engaging your core muscles will help you to absorb the movement and keep good alignment. So whether you ride for pleasure or have a desire to compete professionally Pilates is a must for all horse riders.

Can implants be an option for you? This was a recent case that we completed where we gave our patient the ability to chew and smile with confidence. The patient attended with failing upper teeth that were loose and infected. These teeth were removed and 4 implants were placed. These implants were then used to support a fixed bridge. This enabled the patient to chew without struggling and to smile with confidence with teeth that were setup to create a natural look. If you would like to know about which options may be available to you please give us a call or if you would like to explore more treatments similar to this, please call Jane on 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free non-obligation consultation
