BATHROOM DESIGN
emodelling your bathroom can seem a complicated task for often the smallest room in the house, but worry not! It’s definitely manageable and so worth the work as it’s one of the rooms we visit the most in the home. Set a budget, if you don’t know where to start with this then trawl the internet for designs that you like and make some notes. There are so many different styles to choose from. The bathroom is where you can make an impact with unusual materials if you like, gorgeous lighting and great design ideas. Calculate costs for the sanitaryware including the toilet, basin, bath and shower, whether that’s a shower cubicle, over the bath or wet room style. Look at tiles, here is where you can use clever ideas to help with the budget. Tiling the entire room including the floor, or tiling just the bath and basin area can make a huge difference to the price of tiles and the tiler. Simple rectangular shaped metro tiles can be configured in different ways for a modern look, there’s a surge in herringbone style flooring at the moment and this pattern looks fantastic on the wall. There are plenty of paints for the other areas specifically made for bathrooms to prevent peeling. If you’re pushing the boat out there are some amazing tiles that look divine, giving it a purely luxurious and boutique hotel feel. You can make a statement with wall lights either side of a mirror or hanging down. My tip for this is to look in reclamation places for old

boat lights – if they’re good enough for a boat on the sea, they’re good enough in a bathroom. Alternatively leave the light where it is and just replace the fitting. Then the labour is where a lot of the costings are but if you replace like for like without moving everything around, this saves money. If you’re looking for more of a complete change, even knocking walls down or cupboards out then this is extra labour and materials so adds to the cost. There’s an order to putting the bathroom back together, get this the wrong way round and it can lead to a poor finish or worse, having to re-do parts of the renovation. When I’m remodelling a bathroom for a client, I will usually employ the services of the tradespeople separately to save on costs, whilst applying my trade discounts to items to obtain the best finishes and ideas within budget.
