pop into a curtain makers retail shop, you’ll know how bamboozling choosing a fabric can be. There’s plains, stripes, patterns, fabrics that are linen, boucle, velvet, then there’s what heading to have, lining, fullness, tie backs… it needs serious consideration. Here’s some tips on how to break that down. Firstly decide if the window is to be lightsasneedthisbeautiful.windowinteresting, amazingthecelebrated, viewisortheitselfisDoeswindowcoveringsoonasthegoonorelse Wendy from over the road will know what you’re eating for dinner! Does it let in much needed light or can you see the children from here. Hanging a pole longer than the window and having the curtains pulled back so that almost all of the window is exposed is a great tip. You can add to this Roman blinds on each window section if it’s a room that you’d want to part Sheershade.voiles are soft and luxurious these days, think boutique hotel rooms rather than your granny’s lounge back in the day. A wave heading is perfect for this Shuttersstyle.area great idea for practical reasons giving options to open and close sections of the window independently. Soften the look with patterned curtains to the floor which can be much individuallythemtogether.fabricspatterned2andbeingobtainedlookAhardaroundneededtheshutters.relaxedcanbebybravechoosingdifferenttohangTiebackfor a cool, boho vibe. You could just tie them back to one side if it works. This is great in a younger person’s bedroom or a kitchen with the expanse of plain kitchen units, it’s a lovely, bright focal point. New private hearing clinic flourishes on Cheadle High Street. Olivia Austin of Integrate Hearing says, “We have gone from strength to strength since the practice first opened. After building up my loyal client base for 4 years within Cheadle, it was the logical step to set up the practice which focuses solely on hearing and reflects the high standards of clinical care we
give to our customers. We have greater capacity for same day appointments, a great location for the local carparks and disabled parking and a dedicated, close-knit team. The reaction from patients has been extremely positive, and we are looking forward to the future in our beautiful new hearing clinic.” Best wishes from the SK Team Olivia.

Why a garden bench excelled at new auction serving the people of Cheshire
Clearing out a garden shed saw £850 achieved for lot 168, a large quantity of cabinet-makers’ tools including drills, planes and a saw. Other surprises emerged in the militaria sector with a £700 bid for a collection of German medals and badges.

The eclectic nature of auctions is something I will always love and that came to the fore in a new sale which brought together a wonderful mix of treasures – some sourced in Cheshire.

In 1709, Darby rebuilt Coalbrookdale Furnace and eventually used coke as his fuel. The coal was drawn from drift mines in the sides of the valley. As it contained far fewer impurities than normal coal, the iron it produced was of a superior quality. This discovery proved to be a major factor in Britain’s Industrial Revolution.

I then passed it on to my brother and sister-inlaw who enjoyed putting it together with their children who couldn’t quite believe what we all used to watch when we were young. We can pick up puzzles that feature our favourite places too, the locations of where we used to visit for days out and the destinations of our family holidays. There are even nostalgia puzzles with scenes of films from years gone by, royal celebrations and comic books. It is also possible to have our own personal images printed onto jigsaw pieces, for example, a family portrait, a much-loved pet or a special memory such as a wedding.

Studies have shown that doing jigsaw puzzles can improve cognition and visualspatial reasoning.
18 SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October / November 2022
I recently bought a jigsaw for myself that featured characters from the TV shows of my childhood it was great to bring it to life and remember with fondness Mr Ben, Bagpuss, The Adventures of Parsley the Lion and The Wombles!
are such a great way to stay busy and mentally stimulated, there are lots to choose from, but we are going to focus on jigsaw puzzles. Jigsaws are relatively cheap, easy to get hold of; available from book, charity and stationery shops (plus picking one up from your village or town will help local businesses too) and of course, there are plenty of options to buy online. While puzzles benefit people of all ages, the benefits of jigsaws are especially noticeable for older people.
Jigsaw puzzles are also a great way to reminisce and look back on happy memories either on your own or with a friend or family member. There are such a huge variety of subjects, scenes and
landscapes printed onto puzzle pieces.
improves short-term memory and problem solving. According to Harvard Health Publishing building a healthy cognitive reserve can potentially help reduce the risk of developing dementias like Alzheimer’s disease. Physiotherapists working with older people have noted how the small, precise movements required when doing a jigsaw are beneficial especially when people do not have many opportunities to use their hands in daily activities. And because a jigsaw is so focused it is naturally relaxing to the mind and body and a good way to help stay calm and reduce anxiety.

social scene at Bramhall is the very fabric that makes this club a fantastic place to be a member. June saw the welcome return of the larger social events that follow the major competitions. Lady Captains Day which was followed by the very well attended Ladies Captains Party got things off to a cracking start. The ladies at Bramhall certainly know how to let their hair down. Presidents Evening
20 SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October / November 2022
Vice Captain and Mr Vice Captain laid on a great event and the BBQ style menu running along side the lionesses winning the Euro’s made for a great atmosphere in the bar during the presentation. At the end of September, we held our annual Captains AmAm. the day was a great success and we raised over £4,500 for St Ann’s Hospice.
As Singer and Entertainer Aaron Welby thrilled the crowd the hopes and dreams of some of the competitors faded with each passing drink that was consumed. It is safe to say that Sunday morning brought some sore heads, some regretful looks and some interesting second day scoring. The event was superb and just goes to show the camaraderie felt within Bramhall’s Themembership.Jubileewas on the last weekend of havingJuly

was donated to the Lady Captain and Captain’s charity, St Anns Hospice.
Saturday was the beginning of the two-day competition. There were some great scores, and it left the competitors with a quandary as the social event was scheduled for Saturday evening. A Mixed, relaxed environment to include a BBQ and entertainment, was organised by the President. What a night it was!

James Scott, Principal and CEO of The Trafford College Group, said, “Our ambition is to provide our students with an educational environment that can support and inspire them in their studies and to provide a platform for their success in the future. As a college group we are enormously proud to have the ability to invest college and government funds in two educational institutions in Stockport in such a short space of Councillortime.” Wendy Meikle, Stockport Council’s Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Children, Families & Education, said: “This is hugely exciting news for young people in Stockport so they can receive the absolute best college education in up-todate facilities. We fully welcome this investment in a new college building, and it demonstrates how committed we are in Stockport to improve education and learning facilities for local people. This will help provide them with a first-rate educational experience that will enable people in the borough to realise their potential for generations to come.”
follows similar levels of investment seen at Stockport College over the last few years where the final stage of its £23m redevelopment is due to conclude at the end of this year.

Hanging a pole longer than the window and having the curtains pulled back so that almost all of the window is exposed is a great tip. You can add to this Roman blinds on each window section if it’s a room that you’d want to part Sheershade.voiles

Prevent Breast Cancer is a local Manchesterbased charity, operating from the Nightingale Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital. Prevent Breast Cancer is the ONLY UK charity committed solely to predicting and preventing the disease. Breast cancer prevention is more critical than ever before. Frighteningly, breast cancer is THE most common cancer in the UK. Around 1 in 9 women are affected in their lifetime. And not just women. Breast cancer can hit men, too. Predict. Prevent. Protect.
A Community Comes Together
The money is invaluable, make no mistake. But can we reiterate just HOW important awareness is? Check your breasts. Get to know what’s normal for you. Notice any changes. Be aware of what to look out for. And never, ever be afraid to get checked out. Your life may just depend on it.
CHEADLE HULME AND BRAMHALL ARE IN THE PINK
32 SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - October / November 2022 Charity News
Painting the Town Pink for Local Charity
No wonder, then, that this year’s Paint Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall Pink just HAD to be a success. And a success it was. With bells on. Pink bells and ribbons. Over one hundred local businesses pulled together. Traders decorated their shops, restaurants and windows with pink paint, ribbon, balloons, or bunting – and sometimes a combination! Bars sold pink drinks, cakes and cocktails. Even estate agents found ways to be in the pink and both villages were awash with pink, in every shade imaginable.
Cheadle Hulme bar, Inventery, raised over £1500 with the help of small, local businesses and pop-up market nights. Local boutiques Caro and Vanilla Fudge hosted a ladies’ evening and fashion show and raised £2,500.Cheshire Home Fragrance raised a whopping
Well-established£1465 boutique Angela Beer raised £800.J Pimlott butchers all dressed in pink every Saturday throughout May and collected donations from their customers. The Long Bar hosted a Bonkers Bingo 80’s night. Local barber Maria Arianfar shaved her head and raised over £900. Cheadle Hulme School held a sustainable fashion show and Painted the School Pink to raise an incredible £8,000. Sue Day of Modiste got other Bramhall businesses involved in the Big Bramhall Raffle and raised £660. Pownall Green Primary School held a Race for Life and raised over £1,000. Guinot Bramhall introduced a special Paint Pink treatment and raised £358. Shrigley Rose Estate Agents went pink and raised over £500 with a coffee morning in the sumptuous showroom. With Thanks and Love to All Involved. Countless more residents, groups, businesses, schools, and volunteers all helped make the final, unprecedented, MAGNIFICENT total. We can’t thank them enough. Life’s not been easy for small businesses recently, either so please see our Instagram page and give all the local shops, bars and salons the love they deserve.
That grand total – fanfare and drum roll please –stands at over £28,000. That’s a lot of money to help predict and prevent breast cancer and work to protect future generations.

With a determination to ‘Predict, Prevent, Protect’, Prevent Breast Cancer’s invaluable work relies on people’s generosity and fundraising. In common with all charities, those vital fundraising activities have taken a huge hit during two years of Covid-related uncertainty, restrictions and financial struggles.
Earlier
this year we reported on this event, I thought you might like an update on the fantastic results. I’ll let Jo Hoddes take the story on - Throughout the whole month of May 2022, the wonderful communities and businesses of Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall came together to Paint the Town Pink. The aim of the Paint the Town Pink Campaign is a Prevent Breast Cancer initiative, to raise both vital funds and awareness. Both are crucial for life-saving research, screening, and treatment.

Cromford Mill was one of Richard Arkwright’s first mills, using his invention of the water wheel.
Both at Cromford Mill and Quarry Bank Mill, we can learn everything there is to know about the manufacture of cotton. The process of carding right through to spinning, weaving and production of garments and textiles started hundreds of years ago in the homes of weavers, but it was only in the late 1700’s that we see a rapid development of machinery moving out of the home and into mills and factories.

Compared to sole traders and partnerships, the limited company has a lot of planning opportunities both for tax saving strategies as well as control over the timings of when its shareholders’ personal tax liabilities will fall due. To navigate this area does take experience and should be discussed with an accountant ideally before the company is established.
The owners of a limited company are the shareholders, and a limited company can have a vast array of types of share capital and can have many shareholders. The shareholders enjoy limited liability, in that personally they are not responsible to the company’s creditors in the event the company fails. This is a key difference compared to the sole trader or partners in a partnership who are personally responsible for the debts of their business.
Peter

A business likely to have smaller profits can be established as a sole trader or if there is more than one person involved then a partnership would make sense. A partnership allows for the profits to be divided in an agreed fashion and the partners involved must each include on their personal tax return their share of the partnership’s profits. The partnership must also submit a tax return, but the partnership per se does not pay tax.
can vote a dividend to a particular class of shareholder and overlook the others. This is immensely important for the planning of extracting the profits from the company. Unlike the sole trader or partner, the shareholders are only taxed based upon dividends they have received, and the timing of those dividends is under the control of the directors who are often also the shareholders.

Often when companies are formed a range of share types is beneficial. The profits of a company, (after the company has calculated the corporation tax it must pay), can be distributed to the shareholders when the directors vote a dividend, and importantly the director(s)
If you are about to start a business, you will need to decide the format that suits you best. It is very important to understand the options, since some formats may be wholly unsuitable for you and your proposed business.
The limited company is completely different and is quite separate from the owners and directors. A limited company must have at least one director, and at least one owner.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220921124940-b70a3dfb458d2de471551d8f0f164ad9/v1/e76658732ff383d3adab24a0558e2adf.jpeg)
Companies that are already established can bring on board new shareholders and start paying dividends to them, but great care must be taken because an established company is very likely to have value and changing the shareholders can create unwelcome tax liabilities.
It is quite commonplace for a company to be incorporated with different share classes and those shares to be held by members of one family. For example. a spouse does not have to work in the ‘family business’ to receive dividends from the company and if the dividends are shared between family members then the overall personal tax burden is often less.
A sole trader and a partnership each have a simplicity to them and there is little room for tax planning. The sole trader and the partners in a partnership are taxed personally on the profits made each year, regardless of how much money they have drawn out of the business themselves.

Start with the butternut squash because this will take the longest. Prepare the squash 2 ways - half of it will be purée, the other half, diced and roasted. Firstly, slice the squash in half, length ways and scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Keep the skin on one half and wrap in tinfoil.
Now all the hard work and preparation is done, it’s time to bring it all together.
With the other half of the squash, peel the skin with a potato peeler and dice the flesh. Coat the diced pieces with a little olive oil, season with salt, pepper and fennel seeds. Roast both halves in the oven on 180c. The half squash will take around 30 minutes and the diced pieces around 15 minutes. Once the half squash is roasted and the the flesh is soft, scoop out and mash with a folk to make the purée. Put this to one side. Pesto

In fact, natural selection all but ceased the moment developments in medical science, law and order and the abundance of food reduced the death rate from the above factors, so do we really need to be as risk averse and pessimistic these days?

(Of course this is just the average brainwave pattern. There are billions of people with more left skewed brains too, and the further you go to the left, the more optimistic and positive those brains are, and the further to the right the more likely you are to find chronic stress, anxiety and depression.)
As the graph shows, the average human brainwave pattern is skewed to the right, meaning that most humans are by default more pessimistic, risk averse, cautious and a little anxious. So yes, you could say that humans are ‘designed’ to worry.
ask why we would want to shift our brainwaves to the left, given the optimal evolutionary position is to be skewed to the right, and the answer is that humans simply do not face the same risks to our lives that we evolved to face, such as frequent wars, illness, childbirth and all-cause infant mortality.
For people who report themselves as happier, more relaxed, calmer and more optimistic, the neuron activity favours the left side.
Recent discoveries in neuroscience and neuroplasticity (the changes in brain structure which occur based on our thoughts and behaviour) have shown that we can SHIFT our own PFL brain wave pattern over time. If we become more stressed and anxious then our brainwaves shift more to the right,
In a world of opportunity, safety and relative prosperity, maybe these natural tendencies could be holding us back more than keeping us safe.
To conclude; we are largely stuck with the brains we now have in an ever more complex world, meaning that neuroplastic change is pretty much all we have to hone and enhance our brains.
It would therefore be beneficial for humans to engage in activities such as yoga, mindfulness and self care which promote a more resilient, optimistic and happier brain neuroplasticthroughchange.
Interestingly, brainwave activity among humans is NOT evenly spread between the left and right sides.

ARE HUMANS DESIGNED TO WORRY?
Why might this be?
Why does this matter to me?
In people with higher incidences of depression, anxiety, stress and pessimism, the neuronal activity is found to be more concentrated on the right side of the PFL.
and conversely, if we practice mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other emotional resilience building activities, our brainwaves shift to the Overleft.
Assuming the accuracy of Darwin’s theory of natural selection and evolution, it can be concluded that favouring caution and risk aversion must be a survival boosting trait.
Brainwave activity in the pre-frontal lobe (“PFL”), which is the most cognitive, rational and ‘human’ part of the brain, can occur in both the left and right sides.

As well as recommending joining a Pilates class, here are a few tips to follow at home 1. Don’t ‘stabilise’ your shoulders by forcing them down your back, this will only jam them up more.2.Allow the shoulders to melt down the back, visualising the distance between your shoulders and ears getting bigger and bigger.

at the feet, the ankle joint is designed for mobility. Working upwards, this means the knees are designed for stability. That’s a really important concept to understand, because our bodies are masters at compensation, so if we lose mobility at one joint, such as the ankle, the knee will become more mobile to compensate for this! As the knee joint is designed for stability, if there is too much mobility, it fairly quickly leads to dysfunction and Lookingpain. at the shoulders, they’re designed for stability, so that means the thoracic spine (the upper part of the spine) needs to be mobile, otherwise it will cause dysfunction in the Weshoulderscanalso follow this logic down the body –are your shoulder problems caused by a problem that started in the lumbar region or the hips? Perhaps it was lower still, in the knees? Or did the problem start with stiff ankles?
Pilates
4. Be aware of those lower muscles working - they are often very switched off so be aware it may take a while to sense this, do NOT force.
6. Enjoy the feeling of being wide and open across your chest. Notice how your head starts to return to a much more natural position, your eye level will be straight ahead....... so, smile and greet the world.
3. Think about the tips at the bottom of your shoulder blades gently drawing in towards your spine.
Pilates for ShouldersHappy
Just like for back issues, we need to look at the whole body to see if we can identify the cause of shoulder pain, discomfort and dysfunction (if you’ve suffered a traumatic injury to your shoulder, then the problem is much easier to identify). A key point to remember if you are suffering is that the major joints in our bodies alternate in their need for stability and Ifmobility.westart
Don’t despair, all is not lost! This is where Pilates comes in: the moves you do in a Pilates class all work to keep the mobility and the stability in the right areas of your body, keeping your body as compensation-free as possible!
5. When you have a sense of those muscles working, gently pulse them a few times a day, keeping the shoulders relaxednotice that as you work these muscles your breastbone lifts upwards.
is well known for helping a bad back, but did you know how helpful Pilates can be if you suffer from shoulder problems?
