Welcome to Wilmslow & Alderley Edge This month Welcome to the November / December issue of SK Wilmslow & Alderley Edge. Well as the dark morning and even darker nights start coming in there is a real feel that winter is on its way. This issue reflects that from the fireworks on the front cover to the festive articles inside.

Interior Design page 20

As I mentioned we have festival articles on, buying charity Christmas cards (p.16) along with interior designer Sharon’s guide to getting your house ready for Christmas (p.20). We have our usual pages of events and activities in and around the area, to help get you out and about within the community. Grab yourself a mince pie (too early?) and a brew and enjoy the read.

Why toys deliver joy forever – fuelled by festive memories One thing is forever entwined with the excitement of the festive season – the joy of unwrapping a new toy on Christmas morning. Children across Cheshire will be making lists and hoping Santa will be kind to them. But one thing they’re too young to realise is that toy cheer will remain with them forever, returning in waves of nostalgia. One woman who knows this well is Hansons’ dolls and teddy bear consultant Janet Rawnsley. She is a lifelong collector who has written books on the subject. She leads fortnightly valuations events in Cheshire Two 19th century French dolls sold and is always on the hunt for for £1,700. items that may fly at auction. Nostalgia fuels the toy market with collectors around the world keen to amass items that remind them of their formative years. Consequently, Hansons’ specialist toy sales have increased and cover everything from dolls, teddies and railwayana to Pokémon and gaming. Hansons also holds single-owner sales, often courtesy of lifelong model railway enthusiasts. However, dolls and teddies were at the forefront of a giant single-owner collection recently catalogued by Janet. She undertook the task of sorting through hundreds of boxes – and discovered childhood treasures along the way. Among them was a first-issue 1971 Paddington bear made at a cottage factory started by Jeremy Clarkson’s mum, Shirley Clarkson. It went to auction Paddington Bear with an estimate of £60-£80 but sold for £260. soared to £260. Paddington emerged in mint condition inside his original shipping bag with Dunlop boots, felt hat and coat. Janet had never seen one in unused condition before as they were generally loved and played with.

The first Paddington bear soft toy was designed by Shirley Clarkson as a Christmas present for her children, Joanna and Jeremy, the worldfamous TV presenter. They proved so popular with Joanna and her friends that Mrs Clarkson went on to make many more Paddington teddies, lovingly hand-stitched in her kitchen. So many people liked them her company, Gabrielle Designs, was granted a licence to sell them in the UK in 1972 and royalties were agreed with Paddington Bear’s creator Michael Bond. But Paddington is just one example of a toy adored by children. There is something for everyone. Other recent lots have included two 19th century French dolls which sold for £1,700; a Palitoy Action Man, £115, and vintage blocks sets, £45. Old or new, vintage or antique, toys deliver joy forever.

Palitoy Action Man, sold for £115.

Vintage blocks sets, sold for £45.

General antiques, dolls/teddy valuations are available fortnightly at St John’s Knutsford Church Centre, Church Hill, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6DH. Upcoming dates include October 28th, November 11th and 25th and December 9th and 16th, 11am-1pm. CHRISTMAS AND COMMUNITY

T

he build up to Christmas for many, is just as enjoyable, if not more so than the main event itself. It is a happy time when we prepare to meet up with friends and family, attend special events and outings, perhaps go to see a Christmas panto and visit Father Christmas. At this time of year, we generally give ourselves permission to indulge more and be a little bit silly, which is all okay as we plan to refocus and ‘get back to normal’ sometime in the New Year. On the flip side this happy and joyful time of year is often a lonely time, particularly for older people with those who have lost a loved one, struggling the most. Research by Age UK found that more than three million older people in the UK do not look forward to Christmas as it brings back too many memories of people who have passed away and of happier times. Although loneliness is by no means an inevitable part of ageing, difficult life events that many experience as people get older, such as bereavement, serious illness or reducing mobility, can all be triggers for becoming more isolated and feeling lonelier. Their research also found that half a million older people across the UK are expected to feel lonely at Christmas and most have not sought any help for this. For them loneliness has become a ‘normal’ part of life. This more normal way of life has also been highlighted in other research to

measure community spirit with more than half the people surveyed saying they wouldn’t ask their neighbour for help with anything. I’m sure most people would feel a little sad to think that a neighbour or family member would not reach out to us to ask for help or a visit if they needed to. The good news is we don’t need to wait to be asked, Christmas time is the perfect opportunity for us to reach out to them. We can make time for a mince pie, share information on local events such as Carol concerts, help with Christmas shopping, offer to post Christmas cards, help to put up the decorations, take a copy of the festive TV guide and together highlight which programmes to watch and listen to, the list goes on. There are plenty of reasons to connect with those in our community and family this Christmas and we know that our efforts will be especially appreciated at this time of year.

Winter recipe HONEY CAKE

A

s I am writing this it is the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah and I saw this cake being made on the TV. It looked delicious so I thought I’d give it a go. Apparently, it is a very old Jewish favourite (12th century) and it symbolises the hope that the new year will be sweet. I think that is a very good sentiment for the end of this year and indeed the last few! 2 large eggs 200g sugar 125ml vegetable oil 250g liquid honey 2 tbsp rum or brandy 125ml warm strong black coffee 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda Pinch of salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves Grated zest of 1 orange 300g plain flour plus extra to dust the dried fruit and nuts 40g sultanas 50g chopped walnuts

14 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

Line a 24cm cake tin with greaseproof paper brushed with oil and dusted with flour. Preheat the oven to 180c/gas mark 4. Beat the eggs with the sugar until pale and creamy. Then beat in the oil, honey, rum and coffee. Mix the baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and orange zest with the flour. Add this mixture to the egg and honey mixture beating until you get a smooth batter. Dust the sultanas and walnuts with some flower – this prevents them sinking to the bottom – and stir them into the batter. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and put into the oven for 1 1/4 hours until firm and brown on top. Turn out and allow to cool. It needs to be made around 3 days before you intend to serve it. Keep it in an airtight container somewhere cool.time. Enjoy!

Charity News

CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD SHOPS OPEN TO HELP YOU MAKE AN IMPACT THIS YEAR What does a Christmas Card mean to you?

A

card is to send seasonal greetings, a way of staying in touch with far away friends, or a means to show friends and family that you care. Whatever your reasons, you can make it even more special by sending a card that donates to charity. With the opening of the Combined Charities Christmas Card Shops again across Cheshire this year, it is even easier to support the charity of your choice. Started 51 years ago and having raised in excess of £5.5m, the shops have stayed true to their values by continuing to give 100% of the sales back to the charities involved, no other organization selling cards on behalf of charities does this. They can do this due to the many volunteers, led by founder Sheila Hallas MBE, who give their time to this myriad of good causes. As well as the large variety of cards available in terms of design and cause there is a large range of gifts and novelties. By selling the gifts, all costs associated with the shops are covered and every single penny from the sale

of the Christmas cards goes straight back to the charity. Commenting on the 51st year, Sheila said “Every year since 1971 the opening of the card shops has felt like the start of Christmas. We have hundreds of volunteers who enjoy working in the shops, and people like the friendly atmosphere. There will be a huge choice of cards which we can overprint with your name and address. Gifts too, for children and adults…. we would love to see you!” Make an impact this year on your families, friends and charitable organisations by buying your Christmas Cards from the shops. They will be opening from late October until early December in libraries in Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Knutsford and Sale. GET YOUR HOUSE CHRISTMAS READY

hristmas always comes round quicker than we think. It’s the 25th.. every year, but it often catches us out and we’re shopping last minute for presents or food, making cute mince pies (or buying them), and if you’re having visitors at Christmas and you’re anything like me, you start panicking about those corners that the vacuum can’t reach or the tops of the windows (no tops of windows get done very often when you’re 5’3”). None of this will be noticed if your house has the Christmas wow factor. First thing’s first, declutter. If that means the loft swallows up anything you won’t need until mid January, go for it. Then, decide on your style. If you’re a traditionalist your home will be reds and greens, warm, maximalist and homely. Add baubles to a garland along with red ribbon bows and a little person’s Christmas decoration they made at school, it will be adorable and they’ll be so proud. Lanterns look fabulous with this scheme, you can use battery candles for safety or fairy lights. Embracing the Danish concept of Hygge (pronounced Hoo-guh) is all about bringing an extraordinary level of cosiness, warmth and joy into your home, learning about what little things make you content. Warm throws, amber lights, cosy

20 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

rugs, connecting with nature are all ways to enjoy this tactile style. Knitted stockings, sheepskin (or faux) cushions, natural decorations look beautiful together. Get involved and collect twigs, fir branches, pine cones, berries and holly, tie together with white wool and have this on your Christmas dinner table. Minimalism at Christmas can be done. If you really can’t do with the clutter of the decorations, group some together in a few areas of the home. Go for simple colours, oversized items, a candle or fairy lights to set it off and there’s your Christmas! However you choose to style your home, have fun and I hope you enjoy this fabulous time of year. Let me know if I can help at all, Sharon.

THE LIMITED COMPANY AND ITS GREATER TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITIES

f you are about to start a business, you will need to decide the format that suits you best. It is very important to understand the options, since some formats may be wholly unsuitable for you and your proposed business. A business likely to have smaller profits can be established as a sole trader or if there is more than one person involved then a partnership would make sense. A partnership allows for the profits to be divided in an agreed fashion and the partners involved must each include on their personal tax return their share of the partnership’s profits. The partnership must also submit a tax return, but the partnership per se does not pay tax. A sole trader and a partnership each have a simplicity to them and there is little room for tax planning. The sole trader and the partners in a partnership are taxed personally on the profits made each year, regardless of how much money they have drawn out of the business themselves. The limited company is completely different and is quite separate from the owners and directors. A limited company must have at least one director, and at least one owner. The owners of a limited company are the shareholders, and a limited company can have a vast array of types of share capital and can have many shareholders. The shareholders enjoy limited liability, in that personally they are not responsible to the company’s creditors in the event the company fails. This is a key difference compared to the sole trader or partners in a partnership who are personally responsible for the debts of their business. Often when companies are formed a range of share types is beneficial. The profits of a company, (after the company has calculated the corporation tax it must pay), can be distributed to the shareholders when the directors vote a dividend, and importantly the director(s)

22 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

can vote a dividend to a particular class of shareholder and overlook the others. This is immensely important for the planning of extracting the profits from the company. Unlike the sole trader or partner, the shareholders are only taxed based upon dividends they have received, and the timing of those dividends is under the control of the directors who are often also the shareholders. It is quite commonplace for a company to be incorporated with different share classes and those shares to be held by members of one family. For example. a spouse does not have to work in the ‘family business’ to receive dividends from the company and if the dividends are shared between family members then the overall personal tax burden is often less. Compared to sole traders and partnerships, the limited company has a lot of planning opportunities both for tax saving strategies as well as control over the timings of when its shareholders’ personal tax liabilities will fall due. To navigate this area does take experience and should be discussed with an accountant ideally before the company is established. Companies that are already established can bring on board new shareholders and start paying dividends to them, but great care must be taken because an established company is very likely to have value and changing the shareholders can create unwelcome tax liabilities.

Sewing projects T

hank you for joining me today, I’d love your help with some sewing projects and I’ll also offer you ideas for days out. As it’s winter and the time of giving is well underway, let me introduce you to the Linus Project. The Linus Project is a non profit organisation of people who sew blankets for children with need. After bring inspired by a photograph and article in Parade Magazine about a 3 year old’s attachment to her blankie during aggressive cancer treatments, the first Project Linus chapter was formed in 1995, by Kathy Loucks, in the Denver, Colorado. “the project mission is to provide a sense of security, love and comfort to local children who are undergoing illness, crisis or other needs” by means of supplying a handmade blanket to children born prematurely to young adults up to the age of 19 years old. This is a project that will encourage blankets to be distributed to our own local hospitals and homes. Stockport and Greater Manchester has many donors of these wonderful handmade blankets, most of which are patchworked and designed using scraps of cotton fabric left over from other sewing projects. The organisation requests blankets of either of the two following sizes, 90cm x 105cm and 100cm x 120cm (36” x 42” and 40 x 48”) Polyester wadding is acceptable and if you choose to use fleece on the back or cotton backing, that would be amazing. Binding strips of 6cm (2 1/2 “) is best, whichever suits your cloth availability is great. Watch me on YouTube where I will demonstrate making an easy and much needed blanket. Now despite there being many sewers I’m the South Manchester areas, there are surprisingly, no volunteers to co-ordinate sewing groups and collections for the organisation. This is vital to ensuring that the quilts donated are distributed

24 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

locally, and will be assessed carefully for safety. So if you, or anyone you know has some time to help, please do get in touch, with me, or Heather, UK Director of Project Linus on 01952 404565. You don’t need to be a sewer, just your kind spirited self would be perfect. Now for me, sewing is a wonderful therapy as it is for so many; and knowing that we are in the heart of the cottonpolis of the uk, we have so many weaving mills in the northwest, with some of the best and most powerful looms and water wheels in Europe, we have a great opportunity to have some fabulous learning days out. Quarry Bank Mill a wonderful place to visit, it may just be the only complete working cotton mill museum in the UK. Visit this Regency period (late 1700 to early 1800’s) site and you’ll learn how raw cotton, once picked by slaves, was cleaned and spun to make thread. Not only that, the mill actually weaves the thread into fabric. You can watch demonstrations of how cotton was spun and woven by hand which I find absolutely fascinating. On top of that, you’ll appreciate how the industrial revolution came about. The fancy clothes the dandies would wear, we’re handwoven by innovative new machines which well know inventors such as Kay, Paul and Hargreaves brought about to set the world off into a spin. I wish you all a wonderful and cosy winter as 2022 draws to a close and I look forward to returning in 2023. Keep smiling, keep inspiring and keep sewing. Mindset Advice

I KNOW WHAT TO DO, SO WHY DON’T I DO IT?

I have heard this many times in my 12 years in the physical and mental wellbeing industry. Whilst the statement itself is common, the underlying reasons for it are complex and varied. Here are some of the most common answers that may (or may not) apply to you. Address any that do and your motivation will grow: 1. Because you are exhausted. 79% of Americans and 63% of British are under slept. Lack of sleep costs the world economy almost a trillion dollars per year through lack of productivity and related illness (USA $411bn , UK $50bn). If you’re not doing what you need to do, you’re procrastinating and lethargic, you might just be utterly exhausted. Track your sleep with a device or app and make sure you’re getting enough. 2. Because you are stressed. Elevated cortisol and adrenaline levels over time cause our bodies to shut down. We don’t absorb nutrients from food, our brains don’t function clearly, our immune system (linked with energy levels) shuts down and it’s completely exhausting. Sooner or later we withdraw and burnout, our motivation destroyed. Address both your stress level and stress tolerance strategy; you can’t always change your stressors but you can change how you deal with them. 3. Because you are unfit. Probably the easiest to address. Humans evolved doing 12-14 hours of moderate physical activity daily. Exercise boosts positive hormones, positive neurotransmitters, circulation and helps us remember more and problem solve better. It boosts our sleep and improves happiness. It is no wonder that being unfit can rob you of the energy and motivation to do, well, anything. Take some responsibility, and if this applies to you, get moving. Walking first then explore other options available to you, you will not regret it.

26 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

4. Because you are sick. It’s not a nice thought, but illness saps our energy and drive like nothing else, so if you really can’t understand your lack of motivation and productivity then get yourself to a GP. If it’s not a mental health issue then start with a blood test and get to the bottom of it. 5. Because you have a bad diet. If you put the wrong fuel in your car it’ll break. Guess what? The same goes for you. Humans have evolved eating (and therefore being able to digest and extract nutrients from) certain foods, you already know what they are. Processed high fat or high sugar foods / drinks are not natural, they’re nutrient void and they’re addictive. Let’s not forget about alcohol of course, which, as well as being calorific, has the added ‘bonus’ of disrupting and damaging your nervous system and poisoning your liver. Review and improve your diet and motivation will follow. 6. Because you are depressed. It is sometimes a daunting fact that if you have no motivation, you aren’t doing what you want or need to do, you have no energy and ultimately don’t feel good at all, you may be depressed. It’s okay to consider that this may be the case and to ask for help. Discuss it with loved ones first and then your GP and take it from there. The good thing is that once you accept something, you can start taking positive steps to address it. Don’t be naive, if you know what to do in your life but you aren’t doing it then there is a reason, and no one is going to solve it for you. Seek help, take action and you might just start to feel your motivation return.

AROMA AND THE MENOPAUSE

D

uring hormonal changes our sense of smell can be a great way to find that extra support we need as menopause symptoms can wreak havoc on our emotional system as well as the physical changes going on. Essential oils are a gentle way to support the physical, emotional and spiritual body, it can prove invaluable during these often challenging times because they can soothe and calm the roller coaster ride that is the ‘menopause’. As a Clinical Aromatherapist with over 20 years experience with essential oils, aromatherapy is not just a great smelling massage, it is a supportive tool that can be used at home, work and on the go. How can we actually use essential oils? From diffusing essential oils in the home/work or using an aromastick for “on the go” aromatics, to applying essential oil blends / creams / balms to the skin, using a cooling spray for ‘in the moment’ when help is needed or using them blended with Epsom Salts and a dispersant in the bath - these can all be really helpful in supporting us on our journey through life. Diffusing a blend of essential oils in the home is a great way to help change the mood / atmosphere, it’s important to remember not to leave a diffuser running for long periods and to make sure your pets can leave the room if they want too. Another quick way, if you spend a lot of time in the car is to put a few drops of essential oils on a cotton wool ball and pop this near you on the dash board. A great way to access essential oils on the go is to use an aromastick, this can be kept in your pocket or handbag and can be used as many times as you need, breathing in through the nose and out through the nose to calm the brain, the molecules of the oils absorb via our olfactory nerve and go straight to the limbic system, our emotional centre, depending on the oils you choose, the effects can be calming, uplifting, energising or grounding.

28 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2022

Applying a blend of essential oils in a cream, balm or carrier oil is a wonderful way to help with restlessness and improve sleep. This act of self care helps us to pause and reconnect with ourself, especially if our days are frantic and full to the brim with looking after those around us. Another instant relief can be a ‘cooling’ spray made with up with hydrosols and oils to reduce hot flushes and soothe in the middle of what can feel overwhelming. If taking a bath is your ‘go to’ for relaxation, then using essential oils with a dispersant in the bath tub can create a great ‘spa like’ experience for you to find that extra benefit in relaxing and taking a pause to reset. What essential oils to choose? We are often attracted to the oils we need, here are sone that can be really helpful at this time: Basil or Rosemary for fatigue / brain fog / concentration Chamomile / Lavender for any aches and pains / itchy skin and overwhelm Clary Sage or Cypress for hot flushes / sweating and sleep Rose or Geranium Bourbon to balance emotions / soothe and nourish dry skin Peppermint or Spearmint for hot flushes / headaches and fatigue If you have any questions on essential oil choice or use then please feel free to get in touch with me.

DID YOU KNOW THAT PILATES CAN BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM?

W

hen studying immunity, most people look at their nutrition and lifestyle choices. It’s common knowledge that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, healthy fats and proteins can have immune-boosting properties. Poor lifestyle choices such as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking contribute to lower immune health. However, exercise can be a powerful contributor in boosting the body’s immune system. Gentle, precise forms of exercise such as Pilates, which combine breathing and physical techniques are especially beneficial. Pilates exercises also help you cope with stress and help to make your lymphatic and respiratory systems more efficient. Our lymphatic and respiration systems are crucial to our immune system. The immune system is a collection of billions of cells that travel through the bloodstream. These cells move in and out of tissues and organs, defending the body against foreign bodies (antigens), such as bacteria and viruses. When we’re stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced. That is why we are more susceptible to infections. Our lymphatic system is basically our body’s waste disposal system. During normal metabolic processes, cells produce waste products, which need to be removed so that the cells can stay healthy and good nutrients can reach the cells. What Happens in a Pilates Session to Improve your Immunity? Although it has millions of vessels just like the blood system, the lymphatic system has no strong pump to keep lymph moving. The lymph is moved by breathing, walking, intestinal activity, and muscle action. The rhythmic movements of a Pilates session stimulate blood

flow and lymph flow. Throughout your Pilates class, as your muscles contract and release, lymph vessels are squeezed and lymph is pushed along and filtered through lymph nodes on its way back to the veins and the heart. Pilates breathing is another important factor in good health. One of the first things you learn in a Pilates is how to breathe better, as most of us ‘shallow breathe’. We need to create space for the ribs to expand, then breathe wide and deep into your back and sides maximising our lung capacity. Joseph Pilates wrote that this type of breathing ‘supplies the blood stream with vitally necessary life-giving oxygen … and stimulates all muscles into greater activity. Therefore, above all, learn to breathe correctly.’ It is no wonder we feel so relaxed after a session. Even a few exercises done correctly and thoughtfully can promote feelings of calm and happiness and ultimately relieves stress. So, the next time you finish your Pilates exercise class, you can walk away knowing that you not only made your muscles stronger, and balanced your mind and your body, but you’ve also boosted your immune system, which will work to keep you healthy as well!
