By Quentin Field, NICC Media Officer For the first time in history, the NSW Business Chamber has joined together with its fellow Chambers of Commerce from across Australia, including the Illawarra - to launch a national small business campaign in the lead up to September’s federal election.

The Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce (NICC) looks set to follow suit and join the alliance program, giving its members a greater voice and access to valuable resources.

From page 1 Officially launched in April by Richard Holyman, the president of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry — himself a successful small business owner — the multimillion dollar national campaign has been titled Small Business – Too Big to Ignore, and will feature press, radio, television and online advertising, as well as a series of events in metropolitan and regional Australia between now and the election.

There are over 2 million small businesses in Australia, employing over 7 million people.

That’s over 60% of our workforce. Yet, for too many years, small business has been overtaxed, overregulated and overlooked by government.

“The purpose of the campaign is to give business owners and employees an avenue to tell us their personal stories in short video messages about life in their business world – the more stories we get, the more that will be able to be heard by those that make the decisions” said interim CEO of Illawarra Business Chamber and Helensburgh resident Mike Halloran.

“We are providing a channel for the collective voice of Australia’s small business entrepreneurs and their staff to be heard and respected, for their needs to be acknowledged and made a priority of the next Federal Government” said Mr Halloran.

“This is about highlighting that the small business sector is crucial to the health and wellbeing of the Australian economy. The small business sector is capable of building a stronger economy and creating new jobs but it needs support from our political leaders.

When you look at it simply, if every small business in Australia was able to employ just one more worker, there would be zero unemployment” Mr Halloran said.

NICC president Pauline Lacelles-Smith announced that NICC members are this month being asked to take advantage of the alliance program and will be officially asked to join through a direct mailing to members.

“If just 70% of our members join the alliance program, the entire NICC will be part of the strongest small business campaign in history” said Mrs Lacelles-Smith.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD “The Chamber will meet the alliance costs through present membership fees which will mean added value to our members who are able to have access to NSW Business Chamber resources. And being an NICC member, should they wish to become full members of the Illawarra Business Chamber, they will get a 20% discount.”

“We are excited at the prospect of joining this program, as an election year is an important time to let Government know what small businesses need, but it cannot be forgotten that the NICC is a grassroots level member-based organisation” said NICC membership officer Angela Fagerström.

“We hold a general meeting on the first Tuesday evening of the month; new members and interested parties are always welcome.”

“The meetings provide an excellent opportunity to network with other businesses, share ideas and discuss ways to make the Northern Illawarra business community stronger” added Mrs Fagerström.

A Reluctant Celebrity

Nathan stops for a photo opportunity with admirers from the Penrith Institute of Sport

By Angela Fagerström Triathletes are known for their physical and mental strength - for how else could you swim 3.8 km, then cycle for 180 km and round that off with a 42.2 km run, all with the clock ticking!

Of the many triathlon events held each year, none is more famous or gruelling than Ironman.

A small contingent from the 2508 area recently travelled to Port Macquarie to accompany Nathan Johnson as he competed in his first ever Australian Ironman event on May 5.

Among them was visually-impaired Helensburgh local, Nathan Johnson. Nathan finished the race in 14 hours and 12 minutes; an effort any triathlete would be proud of and an effort that saw him win his division (Paratriathlete).

However, when details emerged that Nathan competed while nursing a broken foot, he was rocketed to superstardom within the super tough triathlete community and was the toast of Port Macquarie!

Just three days before the event an X-ray revealed a crack in Nathan’s foot. “I stumbled on a training run” explained Nathan. “About 30 km into the run it started hurting, well more of a 4 JUNE 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

twinge really” he said.

Accompanying Nathan on the trip, Mel Whiteside explained the atmosphere at the Ironman and the effect Nathan’s determination had on the crowds. “Ironman pumps up the crowd; there is a DJ at the finish line and when a competitor passes the line, the crowd roars – except when Nathan finished and his name was called, it was dead silent - it was really special” said Mel. For his effort and sheer determination, Nathan was rewarded with VIP seats and a standing ovation at the awards ceremony, in front of around 1000 elite triathletes and Ironman veterans.

The day after the award ceremony, Nathan was uncomfortable with his new-found celebrity status, being stopped every few metres for a photo or autograph with fans.

Nathan is now resting his foot (under orders) but is already looking ahead to more events on the triathlete and sporting calendar, including the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. Nathan wishes to thank his guide Glen Gorrick (himself a veteran of an outstanding 21 Ironman events), Mel and Dave Whiteside, Paul Smith, Nathan Shoemark, David Eccles and Christine Robinson for all their support and help in the lead up to the event and on the day.

The students, parents and friends of Stanwell Park Public School have issued an open invitation to the entire Region to join them on Saturday 22 June starting from 10AM for their school fete – the theme for 2013 – Mexican Fiesta!

The 2013 fete is set to be the biggest (and certainly the brightest!) fete ever with gourmet Mexican food, the most extensive range of home made cakes, highly sort after vintage couture, arts and craft along with all of the traditional fete favourites including rides, a haunted house, show bags and kid’s craft stall.

In addition, the School has attracted some of the Region’s best-known bands and individual performers who will keep the crowds entertained and provide the musical backdrop for the Fiesta throughout the day.

Fete coordinator Kristin Auld said the students and parents were busy collecting all sorts of goodies to sell and raffle including chocolates,

home made tinned fruits and jams, pre-loved designer clothes and gift baskets.

“We decided on the Mexican theme because as a country, Mexico is known for its colour, food, fun and warmth. As a school community we felt that this was the perfect way to capture the spirit of our fete which is all about getting the community together to share food, enjoy the music and buy some fabulous local produce and wares,” Kristin said.

“Importantly the fete is the School’s primary fundraiser and as it is only held every two years, we really need the broader community to get behind us to help make this the most successful ever!”

NEWS Gardening Bees If you want to grow your own food in a sustainable way and you live in Otford, Stanwell Park, Stanwell Tops, Coalcliff or Helensburgh, join Otford Community Garden! The Garden organised two permaculture workshops in May for members and their families. A winter solstice celebration will take place on Saturday June 22 to open the new garden.

Workshops were coordinated by Narelle Happ from A Garden for Life. With the help of a few experienced and beginning permaculture experts, the aim was to learn how to build no-dig garden beds, what to plant where, and practical tips on how to apply the principles of permaculture in the Garden. Lucy Lee from The Art Box organised garden-related activities to help educate and entertain the kids.

“We have been very lucky this year. With the help of Wollongong Council and Landcare grants, we can now dream about having a garden big enough to grow a decent amount of food” says Gaetane, president of Otford Community and Garden Association. “This has been a great adventure and we are happy to soon be ready to

open the door of a Northern Illawarra community garden. We have more than 30 square metres to prepare with a great location and facilities. The garden is managed by the community, with two working bees a month and a few rosters for jobs like watering. Ban the Bag Illawarra Ban the Bag Illawarra is a campaign to eliminate the use of plastic shopping bags in the Illawarra. The campaign was started by a bunch of people motivated to do something about the plastic bag pollution impacting on our environment, after watching the film Bag it.

If you would like to be involved in helping us Ban the Bag in the Illawarra, come along to our next meeting on Thursday June 13, 7 pm at Bushland Chapel, 94 Parkes Street, Helensburgh.

Our group will also be taking part in Plastic Free July, which is an initiative encouraging participants to avoid using single-use plastics through the month of July. By Michael Adams, Secretary Lawrence Hargrave Centre Inc. The Lawrence Hargrave Centre has long desired a home for the models of Hargrave’s greatest contributions to the development of aviation. These models include the 1889 Radial Rotary Engine; the 1894 Glider and Stable Wing Surfaces (Box Kites); and his 1898 Curved Wing Soaring Machines; and the 1906 First European plane to fly, the 14-BIs of Santos Dumont.

Unfortunately we have not been able to find a home convenient to meeting places of locals and tourists. The Reserve Kiosk at Stanwell Park would be excellent but Council has forbidden further development because of ‘rising sea levels’.

So LHC commissioned a portable Centre through Steve Melchior of Elite Products, himself a Vice-President of LHC. Steve had a custom-built trailer built in China where he gets his other trailers made, mainly camper trailers.

us so that the Trailer and all of its contents were paid for from IMB community grants.

We launched the trailer at ‘Wings Over Illawarra’ at the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society at Albion Park in May this year.

Last Sunday we launched it at Stanwell Park where we hope to bring it regularly on weekends.

But we need volunteers to help man it from the local community.

The Exhibition Trailer is available for schools, fetes, and community events. Through it we hope to continue educate our young and promote the local heritage of Northern Illawarra, and Stanwell Park in particular.

The wind last Sunday helped quite a few of the model box kites made by LHC into the air around the Stanwell Park Reserve.

NEWS Mums Merge Missions

Report Suspicious Behaviour

Illawarra mums, Shaz Harrison-Shaw and Linda Munoz are working to raise 1 tonne of food for needy families in their community.

In February, Ms Munoz created ‘Can the Kilos’, where she donated the weight she lost to charity in the form of food. Partners raised 373kg of non perishable food items for Lighthouse Youth Initiative.

These women are on a mission to work together to feed the needy in the local area. “I came across ‘Need a Feed’ on Facebook. ‘Need a Feed’ provides food parcels to struggling families across the Illawarra. It was a natural fit”, said Linda.

Need a feed is working in partnership with several organisations and Neighbourhood centres to receive direct referrals of families who need that bit of extra support with one of life’s basics, food. “When Linda approached me about ‘Can the Kilos’ supporting the work of ‘Need A Feed’, I could not have been happier. She is raising food that will benefit many needy families in our local area”, said Shaz.

Linda’s next challenge is for people in the Illawarra to lose 1 tonne of weight, and donate 1 tonne of food for struggling families.

Helensburgh Police received a report back on the 15/5/13 that two school children were chased by a male person possibly elderly, Caucasian, 170cm to 175cm, short grey hair wearing denim shorts, navy coloured sloppy joe, black cap with yellow circle and black running shoes.

This occurred at the Duck pond on Old Quarry Circuit, Helensburgh where the children were training for a cross country event.

Although this incident is of concern particularly for the children involved, Police have not be able to ascertain the intention of the male person as he has not been identified and there was no conversation between the parties.

There have not been any such incidents reported since and Police have been making regular patrols. Police treat all child approach incidents seriously however there are occasions where not all the motives behind these incidents are sinister. Any suspicious behaviour particularly around children should be reported to Police as a matter of urgency on 4294 1013.

Correction The May 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald published a story on page eight titled “Darkes Forest Update: Fines Are Up” which claimed the fines for entering the Sydney Catchment Authority Special Area had increased by $33,000.

This information was incorrect. The signage was updated to reflect the maximum penalty for a corporation undertaking an unapproved act.

The signage previously reflected the $11,000 maximum penalty for an individual.

Dear Editor, The Helensburgh RSL Sub-Branch would like to mention the many contributors and supporters of our ANZAC Day Commemorations, who have again ensured the conduct of a most successful Dawn Service for the community. Particular mention should be made of the following: Our Defence personnel, who attend purely on a voluntary basis and travel substantial distances to participate, with the Navy representatives from HMAS Kuttabul, the Army contingent from 4/3 Btn RNSWR and the RAAF members from RAAF Glenbrook.

Qantas, who assists with bringing the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels to our shores and with some internal arrangements.

The Fuzzy Wuzzies, who we are privileged to have attend our Dawn Service when they are in such high demand to attend many other venues.

The proprietors of the Centennial Hotel, who generously assist with accommodation for the Fuzzy Wuzzies and Defence personnel preceding the Dawn Service.

The Helensburgh Workers Sports & Social Club, the Centennial Hotel, and their respective staffs, who assist with post-service convivialities for the attendees well out of their normal trading / working hours.

The Wollongong Council staff, who ensure the park and Memorial precinct is prepared for the commemorations, and maintain it so throughout the year.

And lastly, but not the least, the many selfless individuals who assist with the preparations, contribute to the conduct of the service and carry out the many subsidiary activities preceding or post the service, without which it would not occur.

All of these organisations and individuals have steadfastly supported the RSL Sub-Branch ANZAC and Remembrance Day services over many years, providing the Helensburgh community with the opportunity to conveniently 10 JUNE 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

They are to be congratulated by the community for their contributions and the RSL Sub-Branch is eternally grateful for their assistance.

I.J. Carroll BM Secretary, Helensburgh RSL Sub-Branch Dear editor, I would like to comment on the letter by the people protesting against the removal of trees from land at 41 Tunnel Road. Have they looked around the neighbourhood and seen the countless numbers of trees remaining?

I too, am a tree lover but people have to have somewhere to live and, to my mind, people take priority over trees. Housing developments are part of what is called progress. If people cannot afford to live in “The Shire” then they look at “The Burgh” as a place to live. The continued growth of our town has made it what it is today.

Do the protesters realise that the land on which their own homes were built probably had trees removed before building commenced? Did anyone protest against the development of their property? I think not.

With regard to the destruction of habitat, I can assure you that, as a lover of the bush, wildlife is thriving and living in harmony with human habitation.

Rather than the destruction of habitat, a far greater threat to wildlife is the presence of domestic pets, in particular, cats in the neighbourhood.

Many times I have noticed cats roaming round the surrounding bush attacking native creatures or have seen the results their wanton killing.

Perhaps the protesters could better direct their energies to restraining their cats, if they have them, or encouraging neighbouring cat owners to restrain theirs.

Local Cuisine will be ‘Nectar’ Long-time Helensburgh resident and awardwinning chef Daniel Fountain is bringing a unique dining experience to Helensburgh and district.

Due to open in early July, restaurant ‘Red Nectar’ promises a unique fusion of tastes and a relaxed modern atmosphere.

Daniel was quite reserved in his description, explaining he did not want to give too much away before the grand opening. However he did give away a few small clues as to what locals and visitors can expect.

“Diners can expect modern Australian cuisine with infusions from all over the world, but the offerings will be quite unique, with some inspiration coming from the National Park and our native flora” said Daniel.

Drawing on his extensive experience as both chef and restaurateur, Daniel says “The service will be professional. Details are everything in this industry”. He added “I am very passionate about what I do, and for the past 15 years I have worked very hard, training apprentices to reach their goals while they work under me”.

The purpose-built restaurant is currently being fitted out in a contemporary style - furniture, decor and artworks all playing a role in creating the dining experience.

Daniel is confident that locals will enjoy the service and experience, but also aims to draw diners from further afield, making Helensburgh a ‘must visit’ destination at the top of the Grand Pacific Drive.

Among his achievements, Daniel was Chef of the Year (NSW) at the 2008 Australian Hotels Association (AHA) Awards for Excellence and in 2009 he took the title of AHA National Chef of the Year.

Symbio: A New Home For Our Koalas Did you know the first European and scientific discovery of the koala happened at Mount Kembla in 1803?

Today, koalas are facing an uncertain future and need our help.

In the past 100 years we have witnessed wild populations reduce from 10 million koalas to as few as 40-80,000 and today they face a series of threats, the most significant of all being extinction.

Symbio Wildlife Park is currently home to a family of eight koalas. With the development of a new Koala Breeding Sanctuary, due to be completed in the coming months, Symbio’s koala population will double, allowing the zoo to continue to contribute to positive captive breeding programs.

“Here at Symbio we place great importance on building quality homes for our wildlife, and our new koala breeding sanctuary is certainly going to be a very spacious home for our koalas” said John Radnidge, managing director of Symbio Wildlife Park.

“Koala conservation and breeding is one of 22 specialised breeding and conservation programs that Symbio Wildlife Park participates in through the Zoo and Aquarium Association. We have one of the most successful breeding programs, per capita, of any other zoological institution” said Mr Radnidge. “And that is something that we are certainly proud of.”

programs in an effort to provide our koalas with a sustainable food source. Local plantations will ensure we deliver a high quality, well-balanced diet to our koalas which is critical to their general conditioning and successful breeding” said Mr Radnidge.

“To provide a reliable food source for its lifetime, one koala requires 1,000 trees. With the koala only eating 30 of 1000 eucalypt varieties, that’s a lot of trees. We have a responsibility to ensure that we can provide sustainable requirements” said Mr Radnidge.

“Captive breeding programs have essentially become the last remaining refuge for many endangered species and our objective is to provide a safe place for our wildlife. They are ambassadors for their wild cousins who ’once upon a time’ roamed earth freely.”

So with the school holidays coming up, why not pop in and check out Symbio’s family of koalas and see the progress of their new home.

Matthew Gillett Gallery Matthew Gillett is a visual artist, and owner and curator of a brand artistic endeavour, his namesake gallery at the Scarborough Hotel on the South Coast.

Matthew is a full time artist, from Stanwell Park and knows the district. “It is a real privilege to be able to open a gallery at a place like the hotel with its amazing views”, he said. “After travelling the world, painting and surfing, I have returned to the south coast of NSW to pursue my own passion for art and to create a space to exhibit some of the truly amazing works of artists across the region.

The Matthew Gillett Gallery has no desire to follow a traditional art gallery’s set up.

The artworks are positioned throughout the Scarborough Hotel allowing the viewer to roam freely between levels of the building to discover the art as they go. They are displayed like a choose your own adventure book!

By Aaron Babb, Helensburgh Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic Now that we are heading into winter, the most common injury we will see in the clinic is muscle tears. The most common age group affected is the over 35s. Within this age group, the most common presentation will be from soccer players, and from these, those at greatest risk, are men who have a relatively sedentary job Monday to Friday.

In short, if you’re a 40-year-old male office worker who can tell me which letters on the keyboard are the most worn out then this article is for you.

I often hear “I used to play regularly when I was 15 so even though I’m now 42, I figured I’d still be fit and the guys at work told me they needed players for the season. After 5 minutes in, something went ‘BANG’ in my leg”.

It’s the equivalent of someone saying. “I have this 1960s Ferrari (beat-up Datsun may be more appropriate) that I polish every week, but haven’t

Muscles are amazing structures and one of the most amazing things about them is their ability to adapt to their environment. If you are gradually but regularly pushing a muscle to its limit, it will adapt and over time get bigger, stronger and faster. Just as equally, if that amount of size, strength and speed is not being required, it will reduce to the characteristics that are required for your current day-to-day life. Hence if you are sitting a lot at work, your muscle length will have become sufficient for its current demands.

If you suddenly and dramatically increase those demands (redline it) before the muscle has had adequate time to adapt then ‘BANG’.

We have put together a program aimed at trying to beat this. It would usually require about four weeks prior to the start of the season but it is never too late. If anyone would like a copy of the program emailed to them then let us know at hpsportsinjury@bigpond.com.

Ask anyone who has had a decent muscle tear and they will tell you they are as fun as Kim Jong-un at your kid’s next birthday party. They are hugely painful and often have lasting effects if not treated well when they occur.

Most importantly, they are often preventable.

By Jenny Donohoe The Helensburgh and District Historical Society will be giving a talk on the late Dr Frederick Henry Cox at 10 am, Thursday July 5 at the Illawarra Historical Society, 11 Market Street, Wollongong (4228 7770) When the Helensburgh and District Historical Society was contacted regarding a talk on Dr Cox, to our embarrassment we realised we did not know much about him, his family and his association with Helensburgh. That was corrected very quickly and with the help of another researcher we have discovered a very interesting story.

Dr Cox and his family lived and worked in the Helensburgh area from 1910 to 1942, during which time he worked as the mine doctor and local GP. In the early years of mining it was known as a very dangerous occupation; if you did not die from an accident in the mine, the coal dust would catch up with you.

Dr Cox’s experience of working in the mining areas of Newcastle secured him the job of mine doctor in Helensburgh. Before taking up this position, he travelled to England to further study miners’ health problems caused by dust. With this knowledge, Dr Cox was suitably armed in helping his patients from the Metropolitan Colliery.

Peabody Metropolitan Collieries’ 125 years ‘Memories, Mateship and Metropolitan’ photo competition has received a number of entries, including this treasure sent in by Mrs Yvonne Holmes of Helensburgh. Mrs Holmes says the photograph belonged to her father Mr William (Bill) Hunt who would have been just a little boy when it was taken in C1910.

All successful entries will be considered for the prize of $500 in vouchers to spend with any Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce business.

An additional ‘mystery’ prize is also on offer for the first person who can unearth an image of the mine’s first manager, Charles Harper. To date, no photographs of Charles Harper have been found.

The winning entry will be chosen by a representative of the NICC and announced at the Annual Lion’s Club Fair on Saturday October 26. The winner will be contacted by phone, so be sure to include your full name and telephone number with your entry.

By Merle McPherson, Learning and Support Teacher Easter Hat Parade: In a sea of amazing colour, bunnies, eggs, glitter, flowers, cotton wool, straw and cardboard filled the K-2 COLA on March 28. With the help of our very creative parents, students and grandparents, this year’s Easter hat creations were proudly displayed in our annual Easter Hat Parade. From Kindergarten to Year 2, the hats came in many shapes, sizes and colours.

The crowded audience enjoyed every minute of the parade, clapping and cheering on each class as they did a circuit. The smiling faces and huge waves of the students and the audience ensured another spectacular Easter Hat Parade.

Easter Art Display: The library was full of beautiful artwork created by students from Years 3 to 6. Paintings, drawings, stories, dioramas; even skateboarding chickens were proudly displayed. All visitors to the library enjoyed looking at each piece of artwork. Well done to all students who spent time making these amazing creations.

Anzac Day Service: This year Anzac Day fell in the school holidays, so the whole school proudly remembered Anzac Day at a special service on April 9. Again we were honoured to be joined by our special guests: school patron Mr Kelly shared his Anzac memories, Mr Cosgrove played the bagpipes and Mr Saunders played the bugle. The students watched and listened to a slide show which showed real photos from the battle. Some beautiful floral tributes were placed at our remembrance wall. The service was an important reminder of the men and women who courageously fought for the country we have today.

Bandaged Bear Visits: Each year through our canteen, Helensburgh Public School supports Bandaged Bear fundraising for Sydney Children’s Hospital. Funds raised go directly to the hospital, to provide much needed equipment to help seriously ill children. Bandaged Bear made an exciting visit to a special assembly at our school, to thank all our students for raising money for this important cause.

Thank you to all the families who supported this appeal, helping our school raise over $400.

Drama Workshops for kids: “Acting on Instinct” School holidays, particularly the winter school holidays, can seem to drag on with little to occupy other than the ipad, Xbox or DVD. This July, local primary and highschool kids can challenge themselves to step outside the comfort of the lounge room, and throw themselves into drama with two separate workshops planned at Helensburgh’s Bushland Chapel.

Otford resident, Karen Barnett, decided to run the workshops to reconnect with her own childhood passion for acting.

The former radio journalist grew up with drama lessons, dabbled in amateur theatre and deferred an acting degree (convinced her ego would not survive the inevitable rejections!) She is also a mean storyteller, renowned for attracting grownups to her lap whilst reading bedtime stories for the littlies.

“Most of all, I would love to encourage kids to embrace the silliness that drama encourages.

It teaches confidence, overcomes fear and

empowers you to think and act creatively on your feet - all important life skills. AND IT’S FUN!!” Karen stresses no experience is needed, “If you’ve always wanted to give it a go, come along – I guarantee you will have a good time.”

The first workshop, for 8-11 year-olds will run from 9 am-12.30 pm on Monday July 1 and will include drama games, improvisation, and some breathing and voice work.

The second workshop, for 12-16 year-olds will run for the same length of time on Tuesday July 2, but will start a little later (to allow for teenage sleep-in’s!)

Fellowship Of The First Fleeters

By Betty Warn Mary Reibey – the woman on the 20 dollar note This is the story of a lady who became a legend in own time. Mary came to Sydney in 1792 on the ‘Royal Admiral’ a 14 year old girl then named Mary Haydock. Mary had “borrowed” the Squire’s horse to go riding. She also dressed as a boy and used the name of James Burrows. For this she was sentenced to death, but because at that time she was only 13 the sentence was commuted to 7 years transportation “beyond the seas”. Mary worked as a nursemaid at Government House and on September 1, 1794 she and Thomas Reibey were married at St Phillips Church by the Reverend Richard Johnson.

Thomas received a land grant on the Hawkesbury and it was here he set up his first farm. A little later Thomas set up a shop in the Rocks and he and Mary lived above it.

Two months later James Haydock Reibey was born and not long after, George Haydock Reibey was almost ready to be born. Mary had taken over the running of the store and was snubbed by the officers’ wives but she was so busy she did not care. Thomas had built a mansion in the Rocks and made many trips and he made many boat trips to buy merchandise which he sold for a good profit.

Our first ‘Bank’ of New South Wales was opened in Mary’s house in Macquarie Place on April 8, 1817. Mary’s story is factual and portrays the lusty, bawdy days of early rum sodden and vice ridden Sydney. In spite of this Mary has become a legend as one of Australia’s first female entrepreneurs, head of a vast trading business and a tireless fighter against oppression and exploitation.

By Carol Pugh, President Stanwell Park Branch CWA Members of Stanwell Park CWA have been involved in a range of activities over

the last couple of months.

In April we screened Bag It. Our members were intrigued and somewhat horrified with what we saw and many of us resolved to do our bit to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’.

In May the regular, market was dedicated to raising funds for CWA. More than $500 was raised on the day. As many of our members were either at conference in Moree or otherwise unavailable, we have many people to thank for making it a successful day. Our Treasurer Jannette Parsons manned the Devonshire teas and cakes ably assisted by her sister Margaret.

Lyn, Pippa and Tatiana for made cakes for us and Kaz curry pies. Matty Woods provided the music for the day at no charge and Nigel from Razorhurst in Stanwell Park donated a parcel of products worth more than $300 for a raffle. This raffle was won by one of the regular stall holders – Crystal from Butterfly Designs. We need to also thank our own “Baggie” who set everything up for us including the signage along with. Such wonderful support from the community – we thank you all for your generosity.

Four of our members attended the CWA Annual Conference in Moree. From their early reports they had a wonderful time and were made very welcome by the local people. We are looking forward to hearing their official report at our next meeting.

This year our country of study is Morocco.

After the screening of Bag It we sat down to a bowl of hearty Moroccan carrot soup and crusty bread – yum!

Two of our members have also visited a Moroccan restaurant in Randwick. The food was delicious and all served in exotic looking tagines.

We’re looking forward to 6 August when we celebrate our birthday and enjoy more food from Morocco!

By Brian Taylor, Vice President The WAVES 2508 committee and our war widows and veterans would like to thank the local community and surrounding districts for their support in our Mothers Day raffle held outside Bi-Lo. We are a not for profit organisation and all monies raised goes to assisting our members on bus outings to keep their costs down. We are always looking for members in the community to help fill the bus on our outings and as mentioned in the last edition of this paper, we will be going to Concord on Friday June 21st to do the Kokoda walk, with lunch at the Bundeena Club. The bus is filling fast, so if interested call Graham or Di on 4294 2518.

By Virginia Dowson Many Happy Returns to Helensburgh VIEW for their 22nd Birthday. The Celebration lunch was held at the Centennial Hotel on 21 May. Thanks to Ronda and staff for a delicious meal, and many thanks to Kerrie for making the wonderful birthday cake. We were entertained by Darren Coggan who sang and played his guitar, with memories of John Denver, and others, and led us in some popular songs of the 60’s & 70’s and the World Wars, resulting in a very happy time, and some rousing renditions.

Our President, Jenny, welcomed guests and visitors including our new Zone Councillor Yvonne White. Also present were two members from our Sister VIEW Club at Nowra, and members of Thirroul VIEW. Our Club supports The Smith Family Toy & Book Appeal. An incredible $55,000 was raised nationally last year to help disadvantaged children celebrate Christmas with their families.

Two of our members have achieved their 20 year membership badges, presented by Yvonne.

SPORT Attitude is Everything!

Attitude is everything, according to Fitness Coach & Personal Trainer, Caroline WadeMartens. Hence the reason for naming her fitness business, Attitude to Burn.

SPORT Sunday Social Golf Club

By Vicki “The Hair” Little We had our first game of matchplay last month, which had the boys quivering in their boots or it might have been the chilly morning. Did you know that matchplay is often referred to as “Cock of the Walk” which apparently follows the game’s reference to eagles and birdies, and the cock in reference being the rooster - the kingpin.

But because we have a few lady players we’ve given it a new title “Hen of the Hen House”.

That’s golf talk, readers. You can imagine my reaction to that!

Anyway the challenge is on next month. We’ve had a few sickos in our club; we are glad to see our old friend Tony English back strutting his stuff, which is unreal! Kerrie Gardner went under the knife to remove his gall bladder. Kevy Brown finally had his op which is good to hear. Hope your recovery is quick and you’re back giving cheek. Dave Flewin came home with 34 points winning Al’s meat voucher. Johnny Brunton was second in line “doing well with a Heritage Cellars voucher” and guess who came 3rd - me!

Yahoo! Receiving chocolates and champagne my favourite things, so I was very happy. So see you next month.

By Barry Thompson As I gently sobbed myself to sleep, I resolved to turn my back on golf and take up snakes and ladders. My May tournament card had been a disaster and Tung Nguen had given me a comprehensive lesson in match play. However in the cold light of day, I knew I would miss the camaraderie and the occasional satisfaction of seeing a good drive disappear down the fairway.

So I shall saddle up again for our next tournament on Saturday June 15 at Boomerang, 7.00 tee off!

With John Towns back from annoying the Europeans and Jack Hardacker given a day off work for good behaviour, we fielded a group of twenty in good playing conditions.

Apr 30: The weather did not look promising but we decided to get out on the green and hope for the best. We had two major singles games: Rhonda Christie was the winner with runner-up Judith Starky, and Robyn Smith had a win with Joan Gardner runner-up. The consistency game saw Jenny Mason tough it out through a very close game to win with our yellow bowls lady, Kathy Morgan, runner-up.

For consistency games, the winner is the first to 150 points so it often requires a lot of stamina to get to the end. Social pairs game saw Helen Haynes and Elaine Smith enjoy their win over runners-up Margaret May and Lenore Bartlem.

The triples team included Kay Woolley, Carol Dixon (swinger) and June McCotter and they won with runners-up Ann Jackson, Carol Dixon (swinger) and Beatrice Gallagher.

After an enjoyable lunch (the Bistro does a great job with our sandwiches) Robyn Single had a tidy little pile to take home from our bingo. Unfortunately, due to the rainy weather, Bankstown will be unable to visit next week as they have to catch up competition games.

Hopefully we can arrange another date. Ann has organised a team to participate in an away game at Thirroul next month. Shirley Cassidy won the daily prize and Judith Starky the fruit and vegies.

May 7: Shivering cold weather this morning but fortunately it improved. Rhonda Christie won the major singles game with Carol Dixon runnerup. Consistency winner was Robyn Smith with Elaine Smith runner-up, and Judith Starky with runner-up Robyn Single. Our social consistency game saw Pat Watts win followed by Janet Smith and June Killham. Congratulations again Kay, great bowling for a newcomer. Social pairs game resulted in a draw between Margaret May and Helen Haynes, and Kathy Morgan and Ann Jackson – Kathy made a save in this game showing great athletic ability by running to pick up a bowl from another rink before it impacted on their game! Good work Kathy ...all that walking is doing some good.

Ann Jackson was the lucky daily prize winner and Rhonda Christie took home the fruit and vegies. President June McCotter has been busy over the last few weeks ensuring everything is ready for our imminent 58th birthday celebrations. Today, June, Lenore and Shirley did not play but were busy completing birthday preparations. We are catering for 48 people so lots of work is involved. I am sure the Bistro will provide a tasty lunch for our visitors. Carol Dixon has asked me to pass on congratulations to the Grade 7 Pennant Team.

SPORT Stanwell Park Sea Eels

By Karl Weber, Publicity Officer SPSE 25Th Anniversary Celebrations The Stanwell Park Sea Eels Winter Swimming Club celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 5 this year. Invitations were sent out to all previous members who had managed to swim at least one season with the club. The response was excellent with more than 50 swimmers at Coalcliff in the morning, and at least one hundred revellers coming to the celebrations at HelensburghStanwell Park SLSC clubhouse.

Ex-members told stories about the history of the club, past victories and past trips around Australia all in celebration of the winter swim.

Two honorary life memberships were presented on the day to Peter LeBreton, and to Phil Anger, whose award was accepted by his son, David Anger. Peter was the first president of the winter swimming club, and Phil Anger was also instrumental in starting the Sea Eels Winter Swimming Club.

Upon receiving their awards, both men divulged that the club was started as a way of keeping surf club members busy and interested over the winter break. They also shared a few tall tales about club members and their exploits, whilst acknowledging how impressed they were that the idea was still so well-supported.

From a simple idea, a club was born and over the years many swimmers have passed through the record books. It is worth noting that numerous charities and causes have been supported by the Sea Eels, and thousands of dollars have been raised by members either dipping into their pockets, accessing corporate sponsors or selling raffle tickets. It is a community club aimed at supporting those in need, whilst sharing a few laughs along the way.

by Cronulla RSL Swimming Club. More than 30 swimmers came down from The Shire to compete against the Sea Eels. Cronulla is a funloving club and like the Sea Eels, they embrace mixed membership.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Each year we take turns to host the meet, and it was pleasing to see so many competitors make the trek. The swim was originally planned to be followed by either a bommie swim or an ocean swim back to Stanwell Park. Unfortunately, the swell was too big on the day, so after the relays we went back to Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC clubhouse for festivities, food and fizzy drinks. Overall a great day was had by all, and we look forward to dipping into the cold, dark waters of Gunnamatta Bay next year.

Mixed Competition Swimming Some readers may have noted a number of newspaper articles starring one of our female members, Vivienne Moxham-Hall. She featured in the Sun Herald as well as the Illawarra Mercury, highlighting the policy of the South Coast Winter Swimming Association to refuse to allow females to compete at the regional championships.

In the days after the initial newspaper reports, her story appeared on ABC radio and she has received a mixed reception from the community.

Good on you Viv! • The issue has been raised at the regional executive level in the past, and will continue to be raised by our club representatives. Unfortunately, majority rules within this system, and as we are one of only two clubs on the coast that allow mixed membership, it looks like an uphill battle for now.

• The more women who join in and swim, the harder it will be for the hierarchy to deny them the right to compete on the day. So, join your local club!

Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Open Women’s Crew 6th in Australian titles

By Mark Lea, Boat Captain Helensburgh-Stanwell Park rowers came away from the Australian titles at North Kirra with the open women’s crew again showing their class.

Ninety-six crews entered their division with the girls’ crew qualifying through nine gruelling races to reach the Australian Open Women’s Final. The final was as hot as they get, and the girls rowed great; they were still in with a chance of a medal with about 100m to go. But the final waves just didn’t go their way, such is part of surfboat racing and the girls finished in 6th place.

This is such a huge achievement for a crew in their first year of rowing in the open division.

After winning the U/23 division last year the girls have worked extremely hard all season making 14 finals from 15 carnivals in the open division against the best crews around the country. The girls’ dedication paid off with some great results throughout the year. Some of their achievements this season include: 1st overall South Coast Boat Series, 3rd - Branch Titles, 1st - Round 1 of Ocean Thunder, 3rd overall - Ocean

Thunder Series, 2nd - Australian team selection trials, 6th - Australian Titles, 2nd - World Championships.

Our other two crews were dealt a blow leading into the Australian Championships. The U/19 crew that had just won the NSW state title unfortunately had one of the boys break his arm a few weeks before the Australian Championships.

In what was a missed opportunity, the crews that finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th to us at the NSW Championships, finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Australian Championships. Three of the boys have a chance to make up for this next year as they remain in the U/19 division. Our reserve grade crew that had improved in leaps and bounds over the season were also hit with injury in the week leading into the Australian Championships. One of the juniors filled in and this caused a reshuffle of the crew. With one training session together with this new combination, the boys tried their best but were eliminated early in the heats of the reserve grade competition.
