Cats On the last day of Milan Fashion Week the privious year, Vivetta and Arthur Arbesser, two most promising new designers from Vienna, using cats to project a youthful and innocent girl caught my attention at the moment. Recall years ago, few and scattered cat inspired fashion statements were made on runway shows, but it was not spreaded out widely. 2016 is a special year for cats. Several months ago, a Chanel flap bag with cat prints and floral decorations from its Spring/Summer 2016 shocked their fans. Meanwhile, Stella McCartney posted pictures of kittens alongside her iconic handbags and leopard-print coats on different social websites and apps. Now, I have noticed Gucci, and Marc Jacobs Resort 2017, presented multicolored sweaters and sweatshirts with cat designs, thus I belive, cats are the latest trend to emerge from the runways and are extending to hot fashion accessories, business and campaign advertisement, also they are more frequently seen from street fashion nowadays.

ow can you not love cats if you are a fashion follower? Karl Lagerfeld, one of the most influential designers and artists for decades, sees his princess Choupette as his spiritual muse. He adores her intrinsic elegant look and unique personality. Cats are not only trendy in the fashion industry, are they being advertised with designer products, and commercial activities. Choupette made over three million dollars from advertising for a German Car maker and Japanese beauty products in 2014. Carolina Herrera also introduced cats in a handbag ad photo. I see cute pictures of cats, cat printed dresses, shirts and coats are posted on the social media apps from Stella McCartney every other week. Fashion has been going on there forever, sometime you may want to take a break from all that serious environment to a more interesting and touchable side. Feline, makes showgoers smile, draw public’s attention, and speaks for one’s attitude.

ats are making appearances in the less-luxury market and street fashion in addition to luxury brands. It feels like you are telling people that you don’t care about what other people think of you, but you are sweet and easy to get along with at the same time while prensent with a cat’s image. I believe this is one of the reasons why cats become so trendy now. It is such a widely accepted figure for different groups of consumers. Kate Spade, for example, has been playing with cats for their girly brand and I spot those products recently in their retail store. Ripndip, a street fashion brand focuses on the “IDGAF” cat’s attitude that expresses from its screen-printed shirts and other relevant products of skate boarding. The idea of feline fact is a great trend that can last a long time and will be available as different category products to a variety of consumers. Feline is taking over the traditional commercial advertisement, people’s attitude towards fashion and it makes a new stylish look for the coming fall. If you don’t own a cat, are you even fashionable, right? Choupette?

CORSET

Joseph

Corsets: Highlighter of the Year Something that was once a symbol of restriction now becomes an apparel accessory.

HISTORY BACKGROUND Corset was first won by the wealthy French women during the 15th Century and became fashionable from then. The original idea of the corset is a tight fitting garment worn to form a thin waistline and reveal the breasts to show the curves of women’s body. During that time, corset was harmful to women’s health because of the stiff materials that were sewed into the garments. This tight feature of corsets lasted hundreds of years until the 1920s after the First World War. The stiffness gradually decreased as time passed by. Women started to wear looser shapes and simpler silhouette that allow more freedom of the movement as their social status leveled up. However, corsets were never abandoned by women, even in today’s society, they are worn for stage performance and costume purposes. This year in 2016, Miuccia Prada brought the spirit of corset back to the runway shows and corset starts to be trendy once again.

Prada

Many other designers such as Prenza Schouler, Veronica Leroy, and Victoria Beckham also layered corsets on top of other clothing to highlight the waist part of any looks. The purpose of the corsets is mostly ornamental today, whereas the original corset is worn to shape bodies into an S-shaped curve in order to visually please men during early times. The come back of the style is a transformation of the conservative past into a symbol of femininity. Something that was once a symbol of restriction now became an apparel accessory worn by celebrities such as Rihanna and Kim Kardashian.

STREET STARS What makes corset so trendy this year? Layering corsets on top of other clothing makes such a strong statement that women dress for themselves to show the strength of the beauty rather than for enticement now. It is a brought back of the history before the 1920s where women had no social status. Today, you can wear a decorative corset on top of a shirt or a dress in the summer time, and you can also wear it on your winter coat when the weather is cold. The style does not change by the seasons. In another word, it is a trend that will last all year long. We can spot people on the street or in the office wear the decorative corset and they look stylish and fashion forward. Because of the presence of the zipper or the snap that added to the feature, putting it on or getting it off become very convenient for those who are trying to make it work. In the year of 2016, corset is a must have to highlight your feminine waist and tie your whole look?

BELL SLEEVES

The 70’s inspired style, bell sleeve with the full-volume and exaggerated variety look is back on trend now! What is delightful about this trend is that it shows women’s femininity and sexiness without going overboard but wearable, fresh and stlyish for any age.

HISTORY The bell sleeve is a trend that came and went throughout history. Originated by lady’s parasol sporting in the 1500s from France. Bell sleeves were popular among royalties and fitted sleeves were for peasants during that period of the time. It then became big again in the 1970s with added fringe details, and the volumes of the sleeves are large enough to hide small pet. Years after, the trend made another comeback in the 2000s from Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and other pop stars.

VELVET

Victoria Beckham

One of the richest fabrics known to man and characterized by its raised loops of yarn, velvet has always been a classis staple in the fashion industry and it came back again in 2016. The short dense pile results in soft shine of the fabric and becomes recognizable both on the street and runway shows.

Originated from Egypt and Eastern culture back to several old dynasties including Qin and the Western Han. The technique to create velvet was very complex and time consuming so that the fabric was a high-end luxury good used by the wealthy and royalty. The golden age for velvet from history is the Renaissance period and the fabric was mainly used by the wealthy for religious vestments, secular dress and interior furnishings. Back to 2013, Christopher Kane introduced several velvet dresses that I can still picture them in my head today. Velvet has not made such a strong statement of a trend until the beginning of 2016.

In 2016, designers took this luxe fabirc to the next level. Poping up in shows like Balmain, Joseph, Rochas and Valentino, these designers are using jersey velvet to create a more draped and fluid feel to the looks. Some other designers designed tailored velvet jackets and suits which made it more exciting to see when poeple are wearing it on the street. Celebrities like Emma Roberts and Stella Maxwell also adored the velvet trend.

STREET STYLE Velvet looks amazing in both deep and bright colors. Designers got creative with velvet on the runways, and now people are wearing the trend out on the streets of London, Milan and New York Fashion Week.

PAJAMA DRESSING

The most tempting trends of the year has to be something that doesn’t just look fashionable but is extremely comfortable. Pajama dressings made its way from the runway to the street during the year of 2016.

HISTORY OF PAJAMAS The concept of wearing sleep clothing as a fashion statement today probably goes back to ancient Rome (753BC-1453AD) when people slept in what they wore during the day. Which may have inspired Coco Chanel introducing the bold trend of wearing pajamas as ready-towear in the 1920’s. Earlier time sleepwear had been influenced by mostly climate and people worm them to keep warm at night when they have no access to indoors living. During the eighteen-century, pajamas were pants tied at the waist with a drawstring worn by both men and women. By the end of the nineteenth century, the term was being used to describe a two-piece garment as pajama trousers and the jacket-styled top. During this period pajamas gradually lost their nightgown appearance. In the early twentieth century, pajamas began to be adapted into fashionable clothing by avangarde designers such as French couturier Paul Poiret’s pajama collection in 1911. It started to be thought proper for women to wear Pajama styles on the street since the beginning of that century.

Today’s pajamas can be seen as a simple cotton nightshirt to a printed silk shirt and pants sets through the comfort driven look of the 70s. Designers such as Thakoon, Stella McCartney, and Loewe had few pieces featuring the look of pajamas in their 2016 Spring/Summer collections. Gucci, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana have taken the trend to a literal level for the year of 2016 in their 2017 Spring/Summer runway shows. Celebrities for instance, both Selena Gomez in a Derek Rose pajama set and Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana pajamas are early adopters of the cozy trend. Fast fashion brands such as Zara and H&M picked up the trend immediately and some pajama styled items are being spotted in their stores Selena Gomez from the beginning of this year.

Street Stars Pajamas has made its appearance for several seasons and people started showing up at work in comfy and casual styles but fashionable and proper enough at the same time. The zeitgeist of today seems to have a strong touch of rebellious spirit for women through the returns of the historical fashion. More importantly, no one wants to say no to a comfortable and tempting pajama dressing today.

STRIPES Stripes never really go out of style, but they appeared in multicolor everywhere during the season of spring/ summer 2017. Designers created a variety of styles showcasing this classic pattern in every direction, color and size.

HISTORY OF STRIPES Believe it or not, it was only people who were seen as criminal, crippled and insane worn striped clothing as the pattern of being evil back to the Medieval times. Treachery, rebelliousness and cruelty are some of the words to describe people who worn stripes during this period. Wearing striped garments was socially excluded for a long time before its gradual acceptance by lower classes and seamen in the early modern period. Finally in the end of 18th century, stripe designs have become chic and accepted by the public due to the well-known people at these periods. In 1846, Queen Victoria dressed her little son Albert Edward in a striped sailor suit when boarding the Royal Yacht. Ever since then the public started to adore stripes and they were popularized in paintings, swimmers, navy uniforms (later named as Breton shirt) and eventually the fashion world from mid 19th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, Coco Chanel visited the French Riviera and saw the workers in the marina wearing knit navy and white striped shirts. She was inspired and started to make fashionable items featuring the stripe designs right after the visit. In the late 20th century, striped shirts were adopted by variety of people including artists, movie stars, musicians and many other groups. During the 60s and 70s, stripes recall back from its original interpretation and were seen as a sense of rebellion.

SHOCKING PINK

The shift toward brightening colors has been on the rise since the beginning year of 2016. The shocking pink trend instantly light up any murky atmosphere and make the most eyecatching and elegant looks from all the other colors.

SHOCKING PINK HISTORY Pink was not used as more of a girls color until the 1920s in America. Gradually the color only associated with girls since then. In 1937, a new shade of the color called shocking pink (named as Magenta today) was introduced by fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli It was considered as Schiaparelli’s signature color. She always regarded her work as art, herself as artist, and described hot pink as “life giving, like all the light and the birds and the fish in the world would put together, a color of China and Peru but not of the West.” Born with a creative and bold spirit, Schiaparelli became the first designer who introduced the hot pink into western fashion. The shocking pink is such a strong visual stimulating color that used to be active in women’s and gay right, and artists have used it to create abstract and powerful works. Many stars in the 20th century, including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Kate Moss and Madonna made pink more popular and feminine.

Fashion is always political. The hot election event took place this year makes this season’s boldest trend, the slogan T-shirts. It is considered a totally wearable fashion trend and made the most straight forward and subliminal fashion statement from spring 2017 runway shows.

Slogan tees is a fashion item that has gone beyond fashion and it is a revolutionary trend all about message and expression. The early slogan tees had a simple meaning and were created for the love of Disney characters Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse in the 60s. The chatty tees trend was quickly adopted by the public and evolved into more rock and roll use in the 70s began with Vivienne Westwood’s punkrock T-shirts. In the 80’s, slogan T-Shirts for political expression purpose reached its saturation point as an English fashion designer, Katharine Hamnett, worn a large messaged “58% Don’t Want Pershing” T-shirt in a photo meeting with the United Kingdom Prime Minister Thatcher referred to public opposition Against the basing of Perishing at the end of the cold war. Hamnett’s design were spread all over the world and slogan T-shirts started appearing with the emerging of political events ever since then. When it comes to the early 21st century, Slogans on T-shirts tend to be much more a bit of fun, less serious and “a way for the fashion industry to have a laugh at itself.” Said Henry Holland by producing a series of tongue-incheek T-shirts in 2006 showcased on the runways.

More recently, many designers and big brands are utilizing slogans to tell the world what they think and promote a much more positive attitude and lifestyle throughout their collections. “No Leather and No Fur, Thanks,” read Stella McCartney’s take, again promoting sustainable fashion. Sacai showcased a “Fashion is a Passion,” spliced-together tee. Dior’s first–ever female designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri begins her reign with a powerful “We Should All Be Feminists,” message printed on a t-shirt tucked into the classical long dressy skirt gave public an enjoyable and fresh feeling of the brand’s new image. Plenty of other designers associated this year’s election with their chatty shirts, “Free to Roam” by Holland, and Haider Ackermann’s “Be Your Own Hero” for example. Prabal Gurung is one of the many New York designers who was inspired by the election and created dresses and tops printed in finely wrought script with famous speeches by prominent women.

STREET STARS Slogan T-shirts stareted to be seen on streets recently. Some people want to look cool and stylish thus wearing T-shirts with good jokes printed on them. Others want to make certain statement regarding to current political events or news. Being extremely wearable and affordable, slogan T-shirts has the potential to become very mainstream.
