ARTIST’S BRIEF

As my current studio is becoming old and useless for my work, I have chosen you to design and create my new one. I do not want it to be a usual painting studio but a space that gathers my own conception of art and materials I would like raw materials to be visible on all spaces, with no accurate finishing. The main space will be a large one for working. My work is not small at all and I am also into sculpture, so I will need like 30m2 to make my creations. Also, this space has to be high, maybe 4-5 m high. I think it would be a good idea to design an outdoor patio where I can go for inspiration or to paint under natural light. 20 m2 would be okay for this one. As I mentioned before. Visible materials would be proper as I would be able to see time passing on them and how my working activity changes them. Attached to my main working area, I will need some space for storage to hold my canvas and all the material that I use in my work. 20 m2 will be alright and for maybe 3 people as I may need people helping me carrying material. This storage space needs to be accessible from the street. It will be just one storey and will need to have a space for people and clients coming to see my work. I would like it to hold like 7-8 people at a time, so 20 m2 will be a proper size. I would like it to be similar to a small private gallery, where visitors can see my work while feeling comfortable. Perhaps would be a good idea to design this space taking references on art galleries. The visitor space should also be accessible from the street and directly connected with my main working area. Some washing facilities will also be needed. 10 m2 will be good for having all my stuff cleaned up. The structure will be framed and made of steel. I would prefer squared and tidy spaces so a framed structure will help. But the project does not end at this point. I also need you to design my surrounding area. Of course, it has to be respectful with the site so perhaps a mix between my idea of material and the existing landscape will be good.

SITE BRIEF

The location for the building should be in a urban area, preferably an old or a historic one, with cultural background. A very crowded site would not be proper to find my inspiration so I’d rather be far from shops and activity. The site could be either an empty plot or also an old refurbished building, but preferably an empty site so we can start designing with less restrictions. I would also like it to be among buildings so I can feel the urban scene while I’m working. Then not an isolated plot in the middle of nowhere. As I mentioned before, I will need a quiet area so I can work properly. Would be nice that the site faces some small green area or park. I would also like some orientation towards south so I can get more sun and light. Although I’d like a urban area, I’d prefer to have the studio in an area with some car restriction so I have the opportunity to work on a quiet place but at the same time I can receive all the material easily and also my visitors can find my studio with no difficulties.

SITE SKETCHES The site chosen for building the studio is located in Castle Park in central Bristol, as suits with every request from the brief. The process starts by drawing and paying attention o every single detail or element in my site so I get to know it prefectly, its strengths and weaknesses. The main thing to do was drawing and analysing the sections and changes of level as they are very present on the site. Here is when the idea of designing something that plays with topography started to appear. Other elements like traffic noise, sunlight, green barriers, vegetation... were also analysed.

IDEA DIAGRAM

After the complex analysis of the chosen site I could detect that there were many element that splited the place instead of making it easily accesible and appealing. Right in the entrance of the building behind there’s a big space that is mostly unused as it is disconnected with the park and is not set up for people’s use. The car park is another element that creates discontinuity and struggles with the natual atmosphere of the area. Hidden behind the building there are the remains of the old St Mary-le-Port Church, which are almost forgotten in the environment. The idea behind these problems is to create a continuous path along the area that serves as an entrance to the park, enhances the church’s remains and holds the studio at the same time.

DESIGN PROCESS

Having the main idea into mind, I started thinking of a suitable layout for the studio. After defining primary and secondary spaces I tried with several distrubution of spaces, having always the visitor area as a hallway or a path where people could pass along and then leave the building and continue the way through the park. Also, taking advantage of the change of level and the views to the river, I wanted to design a spot for people to stop and enjoy there. The studio is conceived to be just anther way to go along when visiting the park.

FINAL DESIGN IDEA Structure Having a final distribution for the studio, the structure is the next step. The use of a retaining wall in the project is compulsory as it is located underground, so I need to design a frame that is independent from the retaining elements. Using a truss was an option so I can get rid of some columns, but I finally decided to use standard steel beams as trusses take too much space. The structure is planned so is does not interfere in any space of the studio.

FINAL DESIGN IDEA Construction and Services

Regarding environmental strategy and services, the use of upper small windows will allow the natural ventilation through all the building. The opening on the outdoor patio lets the hot air leave the building. Natural light will come through the glass doors and windows situated on each entrance of the studio. Additional artificial light is added as the place is underground and will not let much light in. Water supply is just needed on the toilet area as well as sanitation. Two grilles are placed on each entrance to take the water coming from the ramps in case of rain. For heating/cooling, apart from the use of insulation on the building walls, a system based on cassettes is installed in the studio to keep the place climatized.

To solve the constructive part of the studio, it is going to be used some prefrabricated concrete panels that will form the roof alongside with an exterior wooden floor. The side walls of the building will be corrugated steel and the interior partitions will have a wood finish. Stainless steel will be used as a finishing for the exterior walls and the patio. Floors will be made of concrete in all over the studio so raw material is visible.

CLANDON PARK CONCEPT

After the fire of Clandon House there was a need to transform this to a new centre for exhibition of the remaining objects and also to enhance the horticulture of the property in some way. Following the values of the National Trust, this new proposal faces the current problems of the estate and gives solutions to these touching it the least possible to respect the existing plan. The house ended up without roof so there was a need to cover it again with the new proposed program inside, creating a new shell for the house and putting contrast between OLD and NEW. The new botanical garden will be an extension of the old house, giving a transition between the house and the gardens.

In the existing site plan we can find 2 main accesses to the house itself. The whole estate focuses only in the house part, leaving the rest with no interesting attractions. We can also find different paths which are not continuous through the entire site .

The new scheme proposes completely open boundaries for the adjacent residential areas and for any visitior. In this sense, the entry to the park will be completely free and visitors will only be charged to get into the house and the botanical garden.

The lakes on the upper right site of the estate can be an opportunity to create a point of atraction to the site, as well as the opened part in the northwest side to connect with the surrounding areas.

In order to make the park more appealing on each part of it, there will be large scale sculptures and art installations all over it, and also a new scheme of paths crossing the estate and the lakes, most of them continuing the existing ones.

NEW ADDITION The house will be covered by a new shell that will serve as a roof for the building, leting light inside for the interior garden.

WINTER GARDEN The winter garden will be located inside the house surrounded by the new program and being always present.

OLD CLANDON HOUSE Only the four exterior walls will remain from the rests of the house.

CLANDON HOUSE DESIGN The design of the house follows a U shape to arrange all the program requested around a core which will hold the Winter Garden/Exhibition Area. In this way, the winter garden becomes the centre of the house. The U shape will allow visitors to see the garden from every point of the house, does not matter if they are shopping or having a meal in the restaurant. The Hortus Botanicus will be accessed from the winter garden, going up the stairs and will be the last stop of the visit before going to the back gardens. This is connected to the old building creating an extension of it and a gate to the park.

BASEMENT

This first level holds the cafe and the restaurant. The U scheme lets arrange the kitchen in a way that can be used by both the cafe and restaurant.

The house will be entered through its main front door and left through the south door. (right door in the plan below). By placing the exit there, visitors will always pass through the store before leaving. On the left side of the gound floor there will be the virtual room.

The basement holds the winter garden in its core, which is open in height so it lets trees and vegetation grow and also lets natural light inside the house. The winter garden will also be a place for exhibition.

The cafe is completely open to the winter garden while the restaurant has two different parts with a different level of privacy from the rest of the building.

Frrom the GF visitors will be able to go down to the winter garden-exhibition area and go up again to the Hortus Botanicus.

Surrounding the winter garden there are the 2 workshops and the archives divided into 2 rooms. Right under the reception there is the machinery room.

Parent museum - ABC Madrid Positioned in the heart of Madrid, a 1900 building that once housed the Mahou beer brewery now accommodates this innovative cultural space. The building is the work of José López Salaberry, and the first thing that will grab your attention is its façade. A large glass and metal beam enclosing the café has been added to the original brickwork front. Inside, its more than 3500 square metres are distributed over six levels consisting of two exhibition rooms – one of which is a double height space located beneath the pedestrian square, multifunction rooms, a publication storeroom, a restoration laboratory, warehouses, café and offices. The exhibition rooms were launched with the “Iceberg Effect” show, a retrospective of the ABC Collection that was conceived in 1891 and continued to grow thereafter. In addition to the conservation, study and public display of the ABC Collection, the new museum is a living space and a home for such disciplines as comics and animation, welcoming both specialists and the general public alike.

After having analysed and redrawn the parent museum I could gather a few features about its spaces and other characteristics of the building and the display of its collections: - Longitudinal spaces following the same layout in every floor. - Use of neutral and light tones to create bright spaces. - Lack of natural light. - Touch of modernity in a historical area. - Free space used as an outdoor courtyard.

Brief

The proposal for a new satellite museum of ABC Museo (Madrid) in the city of Bath, brings many ideas to apply not only to the building itself but also to the surrounding area, trying to create a new dimension in the city that implies modernity and elegance. Bath has always been related to history and tradition, so why not insert a point of contemporaneity and young culture? ABC Museum will bring its collections of illustration and graphic design related to a wide variety of themes such as comic, journalism illustration, cinema, Japanese cartoons… and will open its doors to everyone interested in it and mainly focusing on the young scene of Bath. Architecturally speaking, the parent-museum in Madrid, means a core of modernity that has been included in a historic part of the city, which is a concept that the satellite museum will follow as well. It will make a contrast with the city, respecting the existing footprint, but adding something new to the urban and architectural scene. The museum will extend to the urban scheme, giving open-air exhibitions to the city. The area around the building will be understood as a place to stay and observe, more than simple transition. The urban scheme will be not monumental, but surprising (trees hiding views, vegetation giving shade and shelter…). In this way, there will be different areas within the urban scheme, where different thing will be happening. Regarding the activities, there will be open-air exhibitions from time to time that will spread throughout the area and let people know about the existence of the museum. Not only exhibitions are expected to organize but also design markets, illustration contests… that will get people involved in the theme and will create an atmosphere similar to Montmartre in Paris. People will walk the area mostly during daytime. Around 5000 people per day are expected and about 100 visiting the museum. There will be no special activities during night time except for some films or projections occasionally. The plan for the area includes a stepped terrace looking towards the river so people can stay and rest there. As said previously, vegetation will be always present and mixed with urban elements that give people an invitation to stay in the place. Access for deliveries and residents will also be considered, giving enough space for vehicles to pass through the necessary streets and providing resistant pavement that can support them. The building will need enough space for the main collection, which can include posters and sculpture of a large size, so heights must be taken into account. Also, there will be needed secondary rooms for temporary exhibitions or other activities organized like workshops. Since there is an interest to open the museum to the city, it will have an outdoor space or courtyard to invite users to come inside. This space will also be used for the projections and films that will be displayed. The interiors of the museum will be bright and neutral (using whites tones) so that the exhibited objects are highlighted. Natural light will not be necessary inside the exhibition rooms, only in other spaces like reception, café… The structure will be made of concrete and will not be seen from the interior, giving a small touch of neutrality. Machinery and pipelines will be hidden so contribute to a neutral background for the exhibitions.

Site History In 1572, the city was only developed within its walls, being the north entrance just in the north side of the museum site. Afterwards, in 1795, the city was quite more developed, reaching the Royal Crescent towards the west, the Holborne Museum to the east and the river boundary to the south. Finally, in 1885, the city had almost the same structure as it currently is, just seeing new developments in the outskirts of Bath, not significant for our project scope.

Focusing on the immediate area surrounding the site, we can observe the differences between 1795 and the current scheme. The area between the abbey and Pulteney bridge still had areas free of houses or buildings. Apart from that, the urban distrubution and street organization was almost the same as it is today. Just a few significant changes have happened from 1795 as this area has always been within the city walls and therefore was initially developed.

Urban ANALYSIS The site is located facing 2 clear axis: one of them with the Holborne Museum and the other one with Bath Abbey, however, views are blocked to the museum. Most of the green areas are located after the river except for one, so would be suitable to add more vegetation to the zone. Also, due to the way traffic works in that area of Bath, it could be necessary to extend a bit the proposed pedestrianized zone.

The main points of interest in Bath are spread around the city and so there is no concentration of activity in any part. Focusing on the urban approach, most of the area is populated by retail and restaurants and there is an art galley close to the museum site so it could be useful as a connection between this two. Also mention the presence of a market opposite the museum site.

This area is located just outside the museum and works as a direct attraction for the museum visitors. Its main space is occupied by an interactive fountain that works with users movements and position. During the night it lights up with different colour configurations. Around the fountain there is sitting space and vegetation.

Just opposite the abbey, a urban sculpture is going to be installed in order to call for modern and contemporary design in the city of Bath as well as to be used as a meeting point in this new redesigned area of the city. Around this elements there are sitting areas designed to favour social communcation. The existing round green space is going to be kept as it was considered as a successful public space.

This space is located next to the bridge and serves as a viewpoint and place to rest looking towards the river. The introduction of big steps make this space suitable for different positions and activities such as reading, lying down, eating... for both individuals or groups. The trees line just behind contributes to give shade and shelter and intimacy from the passers-by.

The main characteristic of this area is the change of level. This allows to create a complete sub-world where users do not even notice in which city they are. The trees surrounding the space make it completely sheltered and cosy. Within this, the existing fountain is kept as it is considered a historic element with certain importance.

INTRODUCTION TO THE URBAN SCHEME There are basically 4 main points of interest arounf the museum area and within the proposed urban approach: the square in Great Pulteney st, the abbey, the river and the new museum itself. In order to enhance these four zones within the urban scope, four different urban programs will be created on each of them. These will be linked between each other and will serve as an attraction to the area and therefore the museum.

NEW PLAZA CONCEPT The main idea for this new space adjacent to the museum is to design a place where water, light and music gather together and users have the change to be part of it. Out of this comes the idea of the installation of an interactive fountain which people can play with. During night time, the flooring will be partly illuminated so it is still an attraction to visitors.

NEW PLAZA FEATURES The new plaza will be located just at the entrance of the museum so its elements are strategically placed so that the way to the museum is not blocked and visitors can reach it easily. Also, in order to provide shelter and shade to the users, all the square will be surrounded by trees and vegetation, giving a calm and nice atmosphere. Finally, the flooring will be porpusefully designed following the structure of the museum and integrating it.

ZONE 1 The plaza finally features a sitting area surrounding the fountain as well as vegetation and trees to provide shade to the area. The south part of the square is left with no elements so that visitors can reach the entrance to the museum without problem. The benches are made of wood pieces attached to steel supports on both sides. These are then anchored to the floor. There will be 3 benches of 4.8m x 1.2 m, allowing people sitting on both sides of them. The flooring is divided into modules of 2 sizes: 0.6 and 1.2m, creating a composition that integrates the structure of the museum itself.

ZONE 2 The new proposed sitting area will be linked to the existing green zone, that will be kept as it is as it’s considered a succesfull public space. Free space is also kept in order to allow access to the hotel clients as well as supplies.

The sitting space is designed to improve social interaction and allowing different configurations thanks to its ‘L’ shape. Surrounding these, there is vegetation to provide shade and shelter but without blocking the views to the abbey at the same time.


ZONE 3 This space is strategically located looking to the river so people can use it, sit there and enjoy the views from there. There will be a green band as a noise barrier just behind the space so passers-by and transit does not spoil the calmness there. The place will be stepped in order to allow sitting and improving the quality of views towards the river. The space also serves as a continuation of the Parade Garden in the south.

This space features a change of level that serves to subdivide it and isolate it from the rest of the surroundings. In this new space there will be open air exhibitions, design markets, etc. in order to attract people to the area and therefore to the museum. The fountain will be kept as a significant element of the area and all the activities will happen around it. The whole site will be surrounded by trees in order to provide shelter and create a nice and calm atmosphere.

Site Analisys After being analysed and designed the urban approach, the site had to be also analysed in order to start designing the museum and its spaces. The site is approximately 26 x 67 m, having buildings annexed on its south side. The main street is located on the right side of the site, so this should be considered to place the main entrance, as well as views and light entry. Finally, on the north side, the street slopes down significantly to the river.

Museum Design Development During the design stage, there were many facts to take into consideration such as continuity of the street, light entry, dimensions, materials... My first design already had the idea of an outdoor square for public use, but covered on one side, not completely opened to the street. The spaces scheme had present the use of ground floor only for administrative purpose and leave the exhibition spaces in the upper floors. The cafĂŠ and the terrace are placed in the last floor to take advantage of the views to the city.

Museum Design Development After the last design, I figured out that some things did not work neither for the integration with the city nor with the spaces organization so I made a few changes until reaching the final design of the museum. The main variations were the complete opening of the urban square and the creation of a services and circulation band that would be present on every floor to articulate and organize the building.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES NATURAL LIGHT

NATURAL VENTILATION

THERMAL INSULATION

Sunlight comes from the east part mainly as buildings block the entry of light from the other sides. Due to this, the faรงades facing the north-east will have translucent material to allow and regulate the entry of light, while the others will be opaque. This way, there will be different light levels in each room depending on where they are situated.

In order to provide the building with crossed ventilation, I designed a system for the translucent faรงade that allows the entry and the flow of air inside the building. This will go out through the glass faรงade openings situated at the rear part of the museum.

To provide warm and suitable conditions to the building 2 different insulation systems will be used. In the translucent and transparent faรงade, the glass and polycarbonate use their own insulating properties, while in the travertine faรงade there will be a layer of XPS to provide insulation.

STRUCTURE DESIGN The structure of the museum will be made of concrete. All the slabs will be bidirectional due to the easier execution in a site of these characteristics and also because of the more possibilities of design that offers. The building has a sanitary slab below ground floor to feature better humidity and insulation conditions. Apart from this, it will allow for more space and design possibilities for the drainage pipelines. The only difficulty that I found was concerning the sloping polycarbonate faรงade and how it could be supported. After some thinking and trials, I decided to use steel profiles anchored to each slab, on which the faรงade structure will be supported. (See technical detail 1)

This kind of stone will be used on most of the facade of the building. More precisely in the ones that follow the adjacent buildings. The tones of the material fit with the urban image of Bath and adapts to the environment, giving a sense of elegance and simplicity.

This type of ceiling makes a good combination with the chosen floor for the museum. Its easy installation and the wide range of shape posibilities that it gives makes it also a good system to chose for the museum.

Polycarbonate

Granite

This traslucent material will be present on the two facades facing the exterior courtyard so the interior activity of the museum can be partially seen from outside. This will give possible future visitors an interest to come inside and see what the building hides.

This stone is a good material for exterior surfaces with high transit and can also support vehicles on it. It has a high hardness and durability and remains unalterable under difficult atmospheric conditions. Also, it can be given anti-slippery treatments so pedestrians can walk safe on the streets.

Wooden floor

Vegetation

This pavement gives a neutral aspect to the museum and its spaces and makes it easier to adapt any collection or exhibition to the atmosphere of the building. Its combination with whites tones and glass creates a clean image and suits with the concept of the building.

Vegetation is always a good element to add to a project. This will be mostly used in the exterior space spread around the pedestrianized area, but it will also have its role inside the building, giving freshness and life to the scene.
