Will WAGNER HEAD COACH
2
West Texas native Will Wagner, formerly the assistant head coach at perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State University, was named Angelo State’s head football coach in December. Athletics Director Kathleen Brasfield announced the appointment of the seventh football coach to lead the Angelo State University Rams. She said Wagner will bring solid coaching and administrative credentials to the job because of his experience at Northwest Missouri State, one of the most successful Division II programs in the country for more than a decade. Since joining the Northwest Missouri staff in 1998, Will Wagner has helped lead the Bearcats to 10 MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) championships, seven national championship games and three national titles. During his tenure, the Bearcats were 108-8 (.931) in the 12-member MIAA. As a player, Wagner was an All-American defensive back at Hardin-Simmons University, where he played from 1992-95 and earned selection to the university’s 20th Anniversary Team in the fall of 2009. He helped lead Odessa Permian to a Texas State Championship during his senior season in 1991. In making the appointment, Brasfield said, “I have never seen anyone present a better plan than Coach Wagner for elevating the competitiveness of a football program, not just on the conference level, but also on the national level. He’s very impressive with the plan he will implement. Coach Wagner has learned well from Mel Tjeerdsma, who has developed Northwest Missouri into a perennial Division II power. “Coach Wagner knows the X’s and O’s, but equally important, he understands how to manage scholarships effectively. He’s able to handle budget reductions without compromising the opportunity for success. In Division II, the challenge is managing scholarships. Learning how to maximize those dollars decides whether you are successful or not. You can know all the X’s and O’s in the world, but if you have not done an effective job with scholarships, you won’t be successful.” Wagner succeeds Dale Carr, who had a 28-36 record in six seasons with the Rams. Wagner was an assistant coach on the Northwest Missouri team that defeated ASU, 45-14, in San Angelo Stadium in the first round of the D-II playoffs in 2005, Carr’s inaugural year as ASU coach. “I’ve been watching and learning from Mel Tjeerdsma for 11 years and in the last couple of years I

started to figure out that I’m ready to do this,” Wagner said. “The great thing is Angelo State’s history. They’re in Division II, and that’s what I know more than anything. They’re in a great conference, the Lone Star Conference, where we’re going to be competing every weekend with a top team. That’s very similar to the MIAA Conference that Northwest Missouri State is in. I just see it being a perfect fit right now. It’s a program that wants to get back to its tradition and its history of winning, and I believe I’m the guy that can take it the next step.” At Northwest Missouri, Wagner first served as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons before being hired fulltime to serve as defensive backs coach, a job he held even after being named assistant head coach prior to the 2007 season. Under his tutelage, 12 defensive backs combined to earn 18 All-MIAA honors, including Myles Burnsides, a two-time All-American who was named National Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Northwest Missouri has finished six of the last eight seasons with at least 10 defensive players recording interceptions. In 2009, 11 Bearcats picked off 25 passes, the second-highest total in the nation. The Bearcats have averaged nearly 18 interceptions per season since 2004. Last season, Northwest Missouri finished 12-2 and advanced to the D-II national semifinals before losing to Minnesota Duluth, 17-13. As a Hardin-Simmons Cowboy, Wagner started a record 47 games, set school records for interceptions in a season with eight and set an American Southwest Conference record for career picks with 23. He was also credited with 185 tackles and 52 pass break-ups. He stayed on as a graduate assistant at Hardin-Simmons for the 1996 and 1997 seasons. Wagner and his wife, Andrea, have two sons, Brooks and Brayden. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT WILL WAGNER Mel Tjeerdsma, Northwest Missouri State Head Coach
“He’s very deserving of putting himself in that position. He’s been extremely loyal and patient. He’s been a guy that hasn’t been out looking for a job, but rather has been very good at his job. I think he’s going to be an outstanding head coach. He’s a very creative individual. He’s meant so much to me, taking care of all the little things that people take for granted. He was always trying to make things better, and that was great for me because I’m the type of guy that just accepts things and keeps moving on. I’m going to miss him, he was such an asset to us in that respect. He’s a great person. He’s very genuine. What you see is what you get with Will Wagner. He’s a very classy individual, first class all the way. “Our success here has been a combination of a lot of us doing a lot of work together and Will was an integral part of that. I’m thrilled for him. I think it’s a great opportunity and I think its great for Angelo State. I don’t know if you could have got a better one.” Bob Boerigter, MIAA Commissioner and former Northwest Missouri State Athletic Director
“Whatever we asked Will to do during my time at Northwest Missouri State, he did it well. He obviously had a lot to do with, and was an integral part of the success of our high profile football team there. There’s no question in my mind that he will continue to do whatever is asked of him well, including being a head coach. I expect great things from him and Angelo State in the future.” Jimmie Keeling, former Hardin-Simmons Head Coach
“It’s a great, great thing for Will and Angelo State both. He’s a super, super young person and a super coach. He was an All-American for us at defensive back and he’s had a great background with Mel Tjeerdsma. Mel is a good friend of ours and he absolutely loves Will. You’re going to be very excited about having him, you’re going to love Will. He’s going to get that thing going like it needs to be. Will thinks, and I think as well, that Angelo State is going to be one of the top Division II schools in America. That’s what it deserves to be and it made a giant step in that direction by hiring Will.” Craig Naivar, Rice Assistant Coach and former roommate/teammate at Hardin-Simmons
“It’s a tremendous hire. Will is a winner, a proven winner. He was a big time player in high school with the tradition of Odessa Permian, he was a leader and playmaker in college and he’s been a tremendous teacher and has won three national championships at Northwest Missouri. They couldn’t have picked a better guy to lead that program. He’s from West Texas so he really values the people from that part of the country. He’s been around a lot of great coaches that led him to this point and I think you’ve picked a tremendous name there. He’s a guy that the players are not only going to see as a leader and a coach, but as a role model – not only on the football field, but off the field as well. He’s going to do a tremendous job connecting with people in the community. “(Angelo State) hit a home run with Will. He’s going to do great things there.” Brandon Clayton, former player and graduate assistant under Wagner at Northwest Missouri State
“Coach Wagner is a great guy, first and foremost. He taught me a lot about the game of football and some other things in life. He relates well with kids – he can talk to anybody and he’s great at building relationships. He’s a really cool guy. He’s also a really smart coach. He knows the in and outs of everything on the defensive side of the ball. I’ve had a chance to work extensively with him on the headsets, out on the practice field, in the film room, and game planning against different teams. He’s a very knowledgeable guy and I think he’s going to do a great job at Angelo State. I’m sure he’s capable of taking the program where he wants it to go and will have a goal to accomplish some of the great things we’ve done here at Northwest Missouri State.”

“I’m excited to see what he can do. As far as the kind of person he is, I couldn’t describe a better person than Coach Wagner. Not only is he intelligent and can do all the things in football, but he’s so hard working in everything that he does. He’s a big family man and a role model for us. Theron AYCH ASSISTANT HEAD COACH // WRs AND QBs Theron Aych (pronounced like the letter “H”) has coached football across the country, across all levels and began his second stint in Texas when he joined the Angelo State staff in January as the assistant head coach with additional duties of overseeing the development of Ram quarterbacks and wide receivers. The Zachary, La., native most recently coached at NCAA Division II Central Missouri for four years after previously serving as an assistant at the University of Washington and the University of Houston, NCAA Division I institutions. He’s also coached a the junior college level – Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and Mesabi Range (Minn.) Community College – and at the high school level at Aberdeen (S.D.) Central. Whether it was in the Midwest, North, Northwest, or South, Aych has helped his players produce on the football field and realize their full potential as student-athletes, with several going on to play professionally. At Central Missouri as wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator, Aych mentored Delanie Walker, a Harlon Hill Trophy candidate as one of the top NCAA Division II football players and eventual selection in the 2006 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Aych helped three players garner all-conference honors in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), one of the toughest Division II conferences in the country. Prior to coaching the Mules, Aych spent two seasons at Washington on the other side of the line of scrimmage, assisting with the outside linebackers and punters as a graduate assistant. Aych coached two Huskies – linebackers Marquis Cooper and Greg Carothers – who signed NFL contracts. Cooper was an All-Pac 10 selection in 2003 and a fourthround pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Aych’s first foray into Texas football was at Houston where as a coach of the running backs, tight ends and specialists, he helped the Cougars post one of its top seasons of rushing as a member of Conference USA. Aych worked with a trio of future NFL players in Mike Clark (Oakland Raiders), Joffrey Reynolds (St. Louis Rams), and Chris Robertson (Green Bay Packers). Reynolds had one of the most prolific running back careers at UH, earning Sporting News Conference C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honors and All-America Honorable Mention recognition from CNNSI.com. Reynolds still holds the Cougars’ school record for single game yardage after rushing for 300 yards and four touchdowns against East Carolina in 2002. Reynolds, now a running back with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League, has been named a CFL All-Star three times and a Western Division All-Star four times. Reynolds led the CFL in rushing in 2008 while helping Calgary capture the Grey Cup. From 1998-99 Aych was the assistant head coach at Fort Scott Community College and in his second year helped the Greyhounds snap a streak of winless seasons and play postseason football in the Mineral Water Bowl. Under his guidance, two Greyhound receivers earned All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference First Team honors and major Division I scholarships. The previous season, Aych worked as the offensive coordinator at Mesabi Range College (Minn.) and saw running back Tyrone Morgan earn the MJCCC Offensive MVP award. Aych began his coaching career in the high school ranks as an assistant coach at Aberdeen (S.D.) Central High School. Aych was part of a coaching staff that helped Central quarterback Josh Heupel set numerous state records in passing attempts and passing yardage. Heupel earned a Division I scholarship and later was a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma. Aych earned three letters as a wide receiver at Northern State University in Aberdeen and was an All-NSIC Honorable Mention selection. He earned a degree in sociology and criminal justice from NSU in 1996, and met his wife, Gwyn, in college. They have two children, Tommy and Katelyn.

Russell GASKAMP OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR // OL An offensive lineman and blocker for a University of Texas Heisman Trophy winner, Russell Gaskamp joined the Angelo State staff as offensive line coach in 2009 and provided an immediate boost for the Rams on offense. In January, Gaskamp was tabbed as the Rams new offensive coordinator by first-year ASU head coach Will Wagner. Gaskamp’s offensive line helped pave the way for a 2009 team that produced nearly 400 yards of offense per game, the highest ASU output in more than three years and an increase of nearly 1,500 yards from the previous season. The line continued to improve in 2010 and ranked third in the nation with just six sacks allowed in 10 games. Furthermore, ASU passed for a school record 3,086 yards and sophomore guard Austin Sumrall, a player Gaskamp recruited and developed, was the first lineman to be selected to the Lone Star Conference First or Second Team since 2006. Angelo State’s improvement on the field was the second consecutive Gaskamp-arrives-team-gets-better scenarios. Gaskamp came to ASU after three seasons as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State, a fellow LSC institution. For the Bulldogs, he led an offensive unit that ranked sixth in the LSC in both total offense and passing offense, seventh in rushing offense and third in sacks-against in 2008. Prior to his arrival, the Bulldogs had ranked last in the conference in total offense, rushing offense, scoring offense and sacks-against as well as 10th in passing offense. During his time with the Bulldogs, Gaskamp mentored All-LSC First Team selection and 2007 LSC Co-Lineman of the Year Austin Ellis. Gaskamp also helped quarterback Steve Day shred the SWOSU offensive record book record, just as Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander did during his final two seasons at Angelo State before signing a professional contract with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. Before heading to SWOSU, Gaskamp was the offensive line coach at another LSC school, Texas A&M-Commerce. With the Lions, Gaskamp coached another LSC Offensive Lineman of the Year in Ryan Graves, who garnered the accolade in 2005. Gaskamp has also made coaching stops at Sam Houston State from 2003-05 as a graduate assistant where he coached two All-American tight ends, at Austin Johnston High School (2001-03) as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, and with the Austin Rattlers (2000-02) of the North American Football League. For the Rattlers, he served as an offensive assistant before taking over as head coach in 2002 and leading the Rattlers to a 13-2 record and a spot in the NAFL National Championship Game. The Rattlers won back-to-back NAFL titles from 2000-01. A native of Weatherford, Okla., Gaskamp is a 1999 graduate of the University of Texas, where he was a second team All-Big XII selection at center. He started all 13 games as a senior, blocking for Heisman Trophy winner and fifth-overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, Ricky Williams. Overall, he was part of three conference championship teams, played in the Sun, Sugar, Fiesta and Cotton Bowls and was voted to the Longhorns All-Decade Team. Gaskamp earned his master’s degree from Sam Houston State in 2005. He and his wife, Justine, reside in San Angelo.
