SAN ANGELO - Tristan Carter wowed with his first touch and plowed with his last, punching across a nine-yard touchdown pass from Josh Neiswander with 32 seconds left in the game to give Angelo State a 41-38 season-opening win over Eastern New Mexico at San Angelo Stadium. Carter, a junior running back playing in his first game as a Ram, logged 38 yards on his first career carry but it was his last touch that proved most important. Carter became the first Angelo State running back to rush for more than 100 yards since 2008, and helped ASU erase a 38-34 deficit with time waning. Angelo State (1-0) led by as many as 14 points with 3:54 left in the first half (21-7), but the high-powered Greyhound (1-1) offense wouldn’t give up. Wesley Wood hit Chase Kyser from three yards out with 1:43 left in the half to cut the deficit to a single score, and the Greyhounds outscored the Rams 10-6 out of the break to pull within three at 27-24. Angelo State stretched the lead back to 10 after a 41-yard strike from Neiswander to Pecikones, who made a pair of one-handed grabs in the contest, early in the fourth quarter. Wood answered for ENMU with his fourth touchdown pass of the game and the Greyhounds took their first lead since the first quarater after a three-yard run by Melvis Hawkins with 2:30 left on the game clock. The Rams turned to their two-minute offense and under Neiswander’s direction, marched 54 yards downfield for the score. Neiswander avoided pressure on the Rams final play to find Carter for the first time, open on the right side. Eastern New Mexico attempted four passes on its final possession, the last picked off by ASU cornerback Markeith Jones as time expired. Neiswander finished the game 28-of-48 for 349 yards and hit five different receivers for scores. Carter led Angelo State’s rushing attack with 118 yards on 21 carries. Pecikones had 161 receiving yards on seven catches and senior wide out V’Keon Lacey caught seven balls for 74 yards.
DALLAS - Dekarai Pecikonis beat V’Keon Lacey in the race to 1,000 career receiving yards but they both turned out winners as Angelo State topped Texas A&M-Commerce 31-10 in the Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl. Pecikonis, a sophomore wide receiver from Allen, hauled in a career-long 83-yard touchdown pass from Angelo State (2-0) quarterback Josh Neiswander in the second quarter to move past 1,000 yards for his career and answered an early field goal from the Lions (1-1). Not to be outdone, Lacey surpassed a grand for his career with his own touchdown catch of 33 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter, the last of three scores for Neiswander. The trio helped Angelo State to another offensive performance of more than 300 yards, but it was the Ram defense that sealed the win. After Pecikonis’ score made it 7-3 early in the second quarter, Ram defensive back Terrance Preston picked off Commerce quarterback Adam Farkes and returned it 41 yards for the score. The interception and touchdown were the first of Preston’s career. Preston wasn’t the only menace to Farkes, as the Lions signal caller was sacked seven times and picked off on two other occasions. The Rams gave up 429 yards of offense in the seasonopening win over Eastern New Mexico, but limited Texas A&M-Commerce to 274 yards of total offense and just 65 yards rushing. ASU kicker George Shamblin, who served as punter and place kicker during Saturday night’s contest, kicked a 29 yard field goal to open scoring in the third quarter and Neiswander found tight end Nate Bayless for the second-consecutive week to make it a 24-3 Ram advantage. Commerce answered with a touchdown run late in the third quarter, but Lacey’s touchdown in the fourth pushed the margin back to 21. Lacey, a senior who led the Lone Star Conference in catches last season, caught four passes in the contest for 72 yards and sits at 1,024 yards as a Ram. Pecikonis had three catches in the game for 111 yards and sits at 1,029 yards during his two-year career.

SAN ANGELO - Angelo State will be thinking a lot about the last six minutes of the first half of Saturday’s game with No. 9 West Texas A&M at San Angelo Stadium. During the stretch of doom, the nation’s leader in total offense rattled off three quick scores and turned a three-point margin into a commanding 24-point halftime lead and an eventual, 37-27, win to open Lone Star Conference South Division play. The what-ifs are numerous, and were heightened by the Ram defense holding the Buffaloes to 154 yards and no scores after the halftime break. Angelo State (2-1, 2-1 LSC, 0-1 LSC South) attempted to rally with 14 unanswered points in the second half but the deficit proved too large to overcome. West Texas A&M (3-1, 3-0 LSC, 1-0 LSC South) still finished Saturday’s contest with 532 total yards of offense but three interceptions by the ASU defense kept reigning National Offensive Player of the Week Taylor Harris from reaching the end zone for the first time this season. Both teams traded touchdowns in the early going but the extra-point attempt by the Rams that would have made it a tie game at 14 was blocked by Rashad Sanders and returned by Tae Evans for two points. Angelo State had a chance to go on top for the first time two drives later, but Evans snagged an errant pass from Neiswander in the end zone – then came the stretch of doom. Seemingly stopped for just a field goal by the Ram defense, West Texas A&M faked the try and place holder Tim Cowdrey completed a shovel pass to Jay Tillman for a 10-yard score with 5:39 left in the first half. On the second play of the ensuing drive by ASU, Neiswander was picked off for the second time and it was returned 43 yards for a score by Caleb Randolph. The Buffs added one more tally, again from Tillman as he plunged into the end zone from two-yards out with 1:09 left in the half. Angelo State looked like it flipped a switch out of the break as it cut the Buffs total offense in half. The Rams scored on a 55-yard reverse punt return by Garrett Tidwell and Tristan Carter punched across his second score of the game early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 10, but the rally fell short. Carter topped the century mark for the second time in his three-game career with 129 yards, thanks largely to a 75-yard touchdown run on ASU’s first offensive play. Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander was limited to just 110 yards, his career low as a starter, and was picked off twice. The Ram defense recorded three interceptions for the third time this season, including one by Mayse returned for a 29-yard touchdown. Alvin Johnson notched the other two interceptions and tallied a team-high 10 tackles.
STEPHENVILLE - The drought continues. Tarleton State scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to erase a two-touchdown deficit and handed Angelo State its ninth-consecutive loss in the series, 37-34, at Memorial Stadium. The Rams (2-2, 0-2 LSC South) looked like they might top the Texans (1-4, 1-1 LSC South) for the first time in nearly 10 years with a 14-point lead and the ball entering the fourth quarter, but Tarleton State quarterback Nick Stephens engineered three scoring drives in the final five minutes to lift TSU to its first win of the season. Angelo State had highlights in all three phases of the game with booming punts and long kick returns on special teams, power runs and long pass completions on offense, and forced turnovers and a safety on defense, but in a five-minute span it all evaporated. With ASU leading 34-20 with 5:16 to play in the game, Stephens needed just two plays – both passes to Saalim Hakim – and 24 seconds to scoot the Texans 66 yards downfield for a score. Tarleton State evened the tally just three plays later – a kickoff to pin the Rams at the four yard line, a fumble by ASU runningback Tristan Carter, and a four-yard scamper by Evan Robertson. Blake Wiest connected on the eventual game winning field goal from 27 yards out with 1:34 to play to complete the rally. Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander connected on 20-of-34 attempts for 234 yards to move past 6,000 yards for his career and into second place on the Rams’ all-time passing chart with 6,183 career yards. The once winless Texans looked like a different team from the start of Saturday’s contest as Stephens made his first appearance since being injured in the team’s opening contest. Tarleton State took a 10-0 lead early, marching 87 yards in 14 plays on the game’s opening drive, and converting a field goal after blocking an Angelo State attempt on the Rams’ first drive. Angelo State senior return specialist Garrett Tidwell jolted ASU back to life with an 80-yard kick return on the ensuing possession and Dekarai Pecikonis scored on an end-around to make it a 10-7 contest. Tarleton State pushed the lead back to 14 with Stephens’ first touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yard connection with Devin Gray to start the second quarter, but the Rams rattled off 17 unanswered points to close the first half up 24-17. Ryan Smith knocked through a 31-yard field goal for ASU out of the break to extend the lead to 10, and after a Tarleton State field goal, Pecikonis caught a 17-yard pass from Tidwell on a wide receiver reverse around the right side to give the Rams the 34-20 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

SAN ANGELO - Nate Poppell threw for a game-high 250 yards and two touchdowns, including a strike to Robert Armstrong with 1:44 left, to help No. 10 Texas A&M-Kingsville hold off Angelo State, 28-21, at San Angelo Stadium. Poppell, who was sacked four times by the Rams (2-3, 2-3 LSC) and knocked out of the game temporarily, completed 16-of-26 passes and logged two late touchdowns through the air while rallying the Javelinas (5-1, 4-1 LSC) from a 21-14 deficit halfway through the third quarter. For the second time in three weeks Angelo State proved it could keep pace with a top-10 opponent, only to fall in the end. It was also the second consecutive week the Rams held an advantage in the second half and lost. Poppell pushed the Javelinas to a quick start as the team sped 68 yards down the field in four plays after the opening kickoff. The junior quarterback from Spring, Texas, capped the drive with an 8-yard run. It took more than 15 minutes for Angelo State to answer, but the Rams got on the board early in the second quarter on a one-yard dive by Tristan Carter. ASU added another score – a 20-yard touchdown catch by V’Keon Lacey from Josh Neiswander – with 1:59 left in the first half to take a 14-7 lead into the break. The Rams rushed for 61 yards in the game’s first 30 minutes, the most by any team in an entire game against the Javelinas this season. Angelo State appeared to have the momentum in the third quarter and were marching downfield after both teams opened the second half with three-and-outs. The Rams started a drive at their own 24 yard line and moved across the 50 but Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Josh Luck ripped a completed pass from Lacey’s arms and returned it 62 yards for a game-tying touchdown. Both teams traded scores to close out the third, ASU’s Dekarai Pecikonis returning the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a score, and Poppell hitting wide out Ryan Lincoln for an eight-yard score with 4:09 to go in the period. In the fourth quarter, Angelo State attempted to break the stalemate with a 38-yard field goal, but for the third consecutive week the Rams missed a field goal. Also for the third consecutive week, the missed kick would result in points as the Javelinas went 79 yards in six plays with Poppell finding Armstrong for the deciding tally.
WICHITA FALLS - Angelo State sophomore wide receiver CJ Akins made the most of his first career start with a career-high 146 yards and helped the Rams out-gain Midwestern State, but when the final horn sounded it was the No. 15 Mustangs who prevailed, 35-21, at Memorial Stadium. Akins was ASU quarterback Josh Neiswander’s favorite target in the contest with his teamleading six catches and was one of the main contributors to a 442-yard effort by the Rams (2-4, 2-4 LSC, 0-4 LSC South), but it wasn’t enough as the Mustangs scored first and never trailed. Lester Bush rushed for 77 yards and two scores, part of 198 yards on the ground by the Mustangs (6-1, 5-1 LSC, 2-1 LSC South), who handed the Rams their fourth-consecutive loss and third against a top-25 opponent. Three different Mustangs rushed for touchdowns in the opening half while building a 21-7 lead. Marcus Mathis capped Midwestern’s first touchdown drive with an 8-yard run, then MSU quarterback Zack Eskridge scrambled for an 18-yard score to answer a touchdown pass from Neiswander to John Norcott. Bush completed the first half scoring with his first touchdown run just before the break. Angelo State had its chances to score in the first half. The Rams saw two drives end with missed field goals and have missed their last four attempts. A third drive stalled in the red zone as time expired when a last second pass from Neiswander to Nate Bayless was broken up by MSU’s Austin McDaniel. Bayless, a native of nearby Burkburnett, caught a career-best four passes for 27 yards. Bush scored his second touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to extend Midwestern’s lead to 21 points at 28-7, and the Mustangs held the Ram scoreless for the third quarter. In the fourth, Angelo State attempted a rally with a three-yard dive by Tristan Carter and 16-yard pass from Neiswander to V’Keon Lacey wrapped around another Midwestern State touchdown, but the 14-point, final margin was the closest the Rams could get. Neiswander turned in the fourth-best passing total of his career after completing 26-of-45 for 333 yards and the two scores. Akins turned a quick pass from Neiswander into career-long, 67yard reception that appeared to be a game-tying touchdown in the first quarter, but he was ruled out of bounds at the seven and penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct while celebrating the score. The Rams would later punch it in on Norcott’s touchdown catch. V’Keon Lacey caught five passes for 40 yards and Zach McCormick added two catches for 39 yards. In all, Neiswander hit 11 different receivers in the game.

SAN ANGELO - Josh Neiswander threw for a season-high 385 yards and hit four different receivers for scores as Angelo State snapped a four-game losing skid and collected the secondhighest point total in school history in a 61-17 win over Incarnate Word at San Angelo Stadium. It was a good homecoming indeed for the Rams (3-4, 3-4 LSC, 1-4 LSC South) who notched their first Lone Star Conference South Division win, and first ever win over the Cardinals (2-6, 0-4 LSC) in the teams’ first meeting. Neiswander completed 24-of-34 passes to move within two completions of tying ASU’s career completions mark, but was lifted in the fourth quarter with the Rams ahead. The 61 points scored were second only to the 69 points scored by ASU against Fort Lewis (Colo.) in 1993. Angelo State scored three times in the first quarter and built a commanding 45-10 lead by the half. Neiswander threw all of his touchdown passes before the break, hitting Excelle Osborne, Nate Bayless, CJ Akins and Tristan Carter. Angelo State fullback John Norcott and wildcat-back Garrett Tidwell both found the end zone on the ground in the first half. The Rams added three more scores – a field goal, a punt return for a touchdown and another rushing touchdown – in the second half to push the margin to its largest point early in the third quarter and led 65-10. Incarnate Word added a late, 44-yard touchdown run by Trent Rios to finish the scoring. Angelo State out-gained Incarnate Word 650-to-270, including a 471-to-136 advantage in passing yards. The Rams were four yards shy of tying the school’s single game record. V’Keon Lacey was the Rams leading receiver with eight catches for 96 yards. Michael Connor led ASU with 59 yards on 14 carries in his first major action of the season. Rios’ late scamper helped him to a game-high 76 yards rushing for Incarnate Word. Dominic Hamilton caught six passes for 91 yards and a score in the second quarter. Paden Lynch led the Cardinals by completing 10-of-18 passes for 73 yards.
ABILENE - Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander became the school’s all-time completions leader while helping the Rams to an early 7-3 lead over No. 3 Abilene Christian, but the Wildcats proved too much to handle in a 33-20 loss in the Big Country-Concho Valley Shootout presented by State Farm at Shotwell Stadium. Neiswander entered the game needing two completions to tie Ned Cox at 589 and did so on the team’s opening drive with a screen pass to Tristan Carter. The Rams (3-5, 1-5 LSC South) were eventually forced to punt but during team’s next possession, Neiswander hit Carter again on a screen for completion No. 590 of his career. The senior from Winnsboro, Texas, finished the contest 33-of-48 for 327 yards to break his own single-game completions record and surpass 300 yards for the third consecutive game, but it wasn’t enough for the Rams to upset one of the top teams in the country. Angelo State’s defense was stout early on, forcing a long field goal on ACU’s first drive of the game before holding the No. 2 offense in the country to a three-and-out on the second drive. On the Rams’ third drive of the contest, Neiswander rolled out on two separate plays and hit CJ Akins for gains of more than 20 yards. Garrett Tidwell gave ASU its first touchdown and the lead, 7-3, on an 11-yard scamper to the left. After going without a touchdown in the first quarter, the Wildcats (9-0, 5-0 LSC South) wouldn’t be denied in the second. ACU punched in a four-yard pass from Mitchell Gale to Emery Dudensing on the first snap of the second quarter and added another score in the final minute before halftime on a pass from Gale to Raymond Radway. ASU’s Devin McDonald blocked the first point after try, making the score 16-7 ACU at the break. The Rams’ defense came up with another big stop after halftime in forcing another three-and-out. Neiswander and the Rams pulled within three points at 16-13, when a nine-play, 65-yard drive was capped by a 26 yard touchdown pass to Dakarai Pecikonis. The ensuing extra-point was blocked and that was as close as the Rams would get to ACU. Abilene Christian kick returner Kendrick Johnson ran down a 73-yard punt by ASU’s George Shamblen around the seven minute mark in the third quarter and returned it 31 yards. The Wildcats built more momentum on the second play of the drive when Gale hit Radway for 44 yards and set up a first and goal situation. Two plays later, Gale connected with Dudensing again to push the advantage to 23-13. The Wildcats blocked an ASU field goal try on the next possession and Edmund Gates pushed the dagger deeper by taking a screen pass to the right sideline 55 yards for a score. Neiswander found Akins for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to trim the deficit to 10 points, but ACU didn’t give up another. Angelo State’s final drive ended with less than two minutes to play when a Neiswander dive left the Rams inches short on fourth down.

SAN ANGELO - At times it wasn’t pretty, but Angelo State got the job done. Josh Neiswander passed for 355 yards, four touchdowns, set a new single-game completions mark for the second consecutive week and orchestrated a game-winning drive in the final minutes to lift the Rams over Southeastern State, 40-33, at Paul Laird Field. Neiswander completed 37-of-60 passes to surpass 300 yards for the fourth consecutive game and moved into a tie with Ned Cox for Angelo State’s all-time touchdowns mark. It was Neiswander’s 54th career touchdown pass, a three-yard strike to Tristan Carter with 44 seconds left in the game, which provided the difference. Trailing 33-32 with 3:18 to play, the Rams (4-5, 4-5 LSC) marched 77 yards in 11 plays and reached the end zone when Neiswander found Carter for the third time in the game. ASU was successful on a two-point conversion and held the Savage Storm (3-7, 3-6 LSC) on the ensuing drive before taking a knee in the red zone to end the game. Angelo State scored on its opening possession, a 10-yard connection between Neiswander and Carter, and took a 14-0 lead on a quick slant by Dakarai Pecikonis early in the second quarter. Despite the quick start, Southeastern Oklahoma scored two touchdowns of its own and appeared to have the momentum going into the break before the game-tying extra point was blocked by Austin Benson and returned by Terrance Preston to make it 16-13 Rams. Angelo State’s Garrett Tidwell was electrifying in the return game and returned the second half’s opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to make it a 29-20 advantage. The senior return specialist had two long punt returns – one for a score – negated by block in the back penalties, part of the ugliness for ASU. Southeastern Oklahoma would rally again, wrapping two scores around Neiswander and Carter’s second connection in the third quarter, to pull within two at 29-27. With 8:40 to play in the game, Angelo State called upon its struggling place-kicking unit, which has had four kicks blocked this season and missed an extra-point earlier in the contest. Ryan Smith blasted a 31yard try, and despite being deflected by the defense, it wobbled through the uprights and made it a five-point game. The Savage Storm put together a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive on their next possession to take the team’s first lead at 33-32, but failed on a two-point conversion. Angelo State was pinned at the 23 on the ensuing kickoff, but Neiswander methodically picked apart the SOSU secondary while leading the team downfield for the win.
SAN ANGELO - Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander manufactured a fitting end to his career with 391 yards through the air and five touchdown passes to lead the Rams to a 49-35 Lone Star Conference crossover win against Central Oklahoma at San Angelo Stadium Saturday. Neiswander’s yardage, the second-highest total of his career, helped the senior from Winnsboro surpass Ned Cox for ASU’s career passing mark and his five touchdowns broke his own single-season record for touchdown passes (27). More importantly, the effort helped Rams (5-5, 5-5 LSC) out-gun the Bronchos (2-9, 2-8 LSC) and avoid a losing record for the year. Neiswander connected with CJ Akins three times in the game, including two touchdowns in the first half, as the teams sprinted to a 28-28 tie at the break. Angelo State scored first in the contest on a six-yard scamper around the end by Dakarai Pecikonis – one of two rushing touchdowns for the wide out in the game – but neither team would lead by more than a touchdown until Pecikonis’ second tally with a little more than two minutes in the contest. Central Oklahoma’s Daniel Morrell led all receivers with five catches for 84 yards in the opening half and snagged one of three touchdown passes thrown by Ethan Sharp in the game’s first 30 minutes. His 21-yard catch from Sharp at 6:59 left in the first half gave UCO its second lead of the contest, 21-14. The two teams combined to score 42 points in the second quarter alone. Angelo State notched a quick score out of the break with Neiswander finding V’Keon Lacey from 20 yards out, but the game slowed with a 15-play, 72-yard answering drive from UCO that took 6:21. That drive was capped with a eight-yard pass from Sharp to Carter Whitson, and would prove to be the Bronchos’ final tally. Akins scored his career-best third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter to give the Rams a 42-35 advantage and two fourth quarter interceptions – one by Dekkar Williams and one by Brandon Mayse – helped ASU seal the win. Akins caught six passes for 94 yards and finished tied for the game-high with Lacey, who also had six catches. Tristan Carter paced ASU’s rushing attack with 73 yards as the Rams rumbled to a 119-to-105 advantage on the ground. In all, Angelo State out-gained Central Oklahoma 510-to364.

ANGELO STATE FOOTBALL RECORDS

ASU COACHING HISTORY Max Bumgardner (1964-68) - 13-36 (.265 pct) Coach "Bum" guided the Ram fortunes from 1950 to 1968 and led the Rams to three bowl appearances. He compiled a career 74-74-2 record in his years at ASU, including his stint as head coach of the San Angelo College Rams as well as the inaugural years of senior college competition. Coach Bumgardner also recruited and coached former Ram mentor Jerry Vandergriff during his years as a player at San Angelo College. Bum passed away in 2005. Grant Teaff (1969-1971) - 19-11 (.633 pct) One of the great collegiate coaching legends of all-time, Teaff got his start at Angelo State before heading to Baylor to establish the dynasty there. Teaff led the Rams to three consecutive winning seasons and a 38-21 win over the number-one ranked Javelinas of Texas A&I in 1970. Teaff is now the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, headquartered in Waco. James Cameron (1972-73) - 13-7 (.650 pct) Jim Cameron established his mark on ASU football in part on the field and in part in the coaching legacy he left behind. Cameron brought former defensive coordinator Mike Martin along with him from Howard Payne University when he became the Rams’ head coach. Cameron led the Rams to an appearance in the Ardmore Shrine Bowl in 1972. Cameron passed away in 1995. Jim Hess (1974-81) - 65-23-3 (.731 pct) Before heading to Stephen F. Austin and New Mexico State, Jim Hess coached the Rams for eight seasons. He led the Rams to the NAIA national title in 1978 and has the school’s top all-time winning percentage. The Rams reached the NAIA playoffs three times under Hess’ guidance. Jerry Vandergriff (1982-2004) - 143-101-2 (.585 pct) Coach Vandergriff is the winningest coach in ASU history, establishing that mark with a win over Central Oklahoma in 1993. He guided the Rams to four NCAA playoff appearances, including the semifinal round in 1989. Vandergriff also has the distinction of being the only ASU coach to be honored by the Lone Star Conference with the Coach of the Year honor three times. He won the award in 1984, 1987 and 1997. 28
Dale Carr (2005-2010) - 28-36 (.437 pct) It didn’t take long for Dale Carr to find success at ASU. After an outstanding coaching career at Tyler Junior College, Carr became the fourth ASU head coach to lead the Rams to the postseason as he posted a 9-2 regularseason record in his debut. His nine wins in 2005 marked the most ever by an ASU head coach in his first year. Replicating that success proved difficult however, as Carr’s teams posted sub-.500 records in each of the next three seasons before a 6-5 mark in 2009 and a 5-5 record in 2010, Carr’s final season. Pete Sikes also guided the Ram fortunes, leading ASU during its junior college football days from 1939 to 1949. Sikes compiled a record of 41-235 during those 10 seasons. Coach Sikes passed away in late 2003.

The Rams capped the 1950 season by defeating No. 1 ranked Wharton 6-0. SAC held Wharton to just 133 yards while the Ram offense churned out 323 yards in a game played in a steady rain. Billy McDaniel scored the only touchdown of the game in the second quarter, and Gene DeVeny’s interception in the end zone stopped a last minute Wharton drive.
The Rams were tied with Pearl River at 14 at the half, but it was all downhill from there as SAC lost its return trip to the Hospitality Bowl.

The Rams ended the regular season 6-2, but a one-point 14-13 loss to No. 1-ranked Compton College earned the Rams national attention and helped garner an invitation to their second consecutive Oleander Bowl Classic. The Rams entered the fourth quarter with a 22-7 lead before the Eagles staged a furious 20-point rally to pull out the victory. The game was notable for featuring Norm Cash, future Detroit Tiger and 1961 American League batting champion, at running back and future College Football Hall of Fame Coach Grant Teaff at linebacker for the Rams.

The Rams could muster just six first downs and only 138 yards of total offense, but cut the lead to 17-7 in the third quarter on a scoring pass from Gary Kirksey to Nathan Mathis. ASU concluded an undefeated year by knocking off the Elon College Christians (N.C.) in the NAIA Championship game. It marked the ninth consecutive year that a Lone Star Conference team had won the title. Mark Embry was named the game’s offensive MVP, throwing for 197 yards and two scores. Alvin Garrett and Eldridge Beverly caught scoring passes, and Jerry Aldridge capped his brilliant career with 119 yards and two scores. It marked the 17th consecutive game that Aldridge had rushed for at least 100 yards.
The Javelinas scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass with just 1:23 left in the game to end ASU’s chance for back-to-back national championships. Both teams scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter with ASU using the big play. Doug Kuhlmann threw a 58-yard scoring pass to Joey Sims on the game’s second play from scrimmage. After A&I tied the game at six, Sims set an NAIA playoff record by returning the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. After the Javelinas tied the score at 13, Kuhlmann was sacked in the end zone for a safety to give the Javs a 15-13 lead. The score stood until the fourth quarter when David Knowles recovered an A&I fumble at the Jav 28-yard line with 8:31 left in the game. Seven plays later Anthony Johnson bulled over from three yards out to give the Rams a 19-15 lead.

Robert Thornton rushed for 96 yards and a score while Mickey Russell ran for one score and threw for 147 yards.

ASU took the early lead and never let go, ending Pittsburg State’s undefeated season. Both teams put up impressive offensive numbers as the two teams combined for nearly 950 yards. Mickey Russell was the star for the Rams as he threw for 298 yards and ran for two scores. Russell’s favorite target was Darron Johnson who caught eight passes for 143 yards.
A 21-point third quarter by the Aggies spelled the end of the Angelo State run in the playoffs. The early contest remained close with the two teams knotted at 26 at the half, but an interception of Erik Hartman’s pass combined with a fumble by Hartman on the first two ASU drives of the second half was all Cal-Davis needed to take over the lead and pull out the victory on the Rams’ home turf.

After the Rams rallied from a 9-0 first quarter deficit to grab a 10-9 halftime lead, the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State blasted the Rams with a 25-point third quarter to end the Rams’ dream of a national title. Down 9-0, the Rams rumbled 60 yards in nine plays, capped by a 24-yard scoring pass from Mickey Russell to Myron Turner to give the Rams a 10-9 halftime lead. The third quarter was a nightmare as the Gamecocks returned one interception for a score and another interception set up another touchdown.
The Rams made their first postseason appearance in eight years as first-year head coach Dale Carr led ASU to a 9-2 regular season after three-consecutive losing campaigns. Perennial powerhouse Northwest Missouri State was too much, however, as the Bearcats opened up the contest with 21 unanswered points. Freshman tailback Kyle Fox rushed for 174 yards on 21 carries in the loss.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS
36
NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Two Angelo State Rams have been honored with one of the highest academic awards in collegiate football - an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The scholarship, $5,000, is for postgraduate study at the university or professional school of the athlete’s choice. Scholarship selection is competitive, with players nominated from NCAA institutions across the nation. Linebacker Kyle Kirk was selected to CURRY DAWSON receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 1998. Kirk received an at-large selection. Kirk was one of only seven Division II football players to receive the award in 1998, and became only the second athlete in ASU history to win an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. (Amy Bippert from women’s track was the first in 1995.) Kirk, who maintained a 3.8 grade KYLE KIRK point average in accounting, used his award to pursue a master’s of business administration degree at Angelo State. He received his degree in 1999. Defensive end Curry Dawson was awarded an NCAA scholarship in 2001. Dawson was a Division II selection, and one of only four Division II players to be honored that year. Dawson, who maintained a 3.6 grade point average in animal science, used his award to pursue a master’s of animal science degree at Angelo State.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION SCHOLAR-ATHLETE Defensive tackle Curry Dawson (Water Valley) was selected as one of 16 National College Scholar-Athletes, by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame for the 2001 season. Dawson was selected from a pool of 172 candidates from all collegiate football levels-from NCAA Division I to NAIA. Dawson is one of only two NCAA Division II athletes to be so honored, and is the first ASU athlete to win the award in the history of the Ram football program. “We are extremely proud of Curry and his accomplishments,” head coach Jerry Vandergriff said. “He is truly a deserving individual for this award, and I can not think of a finer candidate to represent ASU." Dawson’s impressive athletic resume includes All-America honors in football from three different organizations, and LSC Defensive Lineman of the Year honors in 2000. He is a three-time NCAA D-II national champion in outdoor track and field, where he competed in the shot put and discus. He is a two-time Academic All-American and a five time academic all-Lone Star Conference selection in both track and football. Dawson received a scholarship of $18,000 to pursue postgraduate studies at the school of his choice. He signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Bears in 2002.
<< Angelo State nose guard Cody Smith was honored as the 2009 recipient of the Greg Stokes Scholarship.
ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS
GREG STOKES SCHOLARSHIP
Angelo State is proud to have had five football student-athletes recognized for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the field. Steve Schwartz was named an Academic All-American in 1983 with his selection to the second team that year. Schwartz, a defensive tackle for the Rams, carried a 3.64 grade point average in business. Greg Stokes was named an Academic All-American in both 1994 and 1995 as he was selected to the second team both years. Stokes maintained a 3.295 grade point average in kinesiology. He was killed in a car accident before the final game of his senior season. Kyle Kirk became the Rams’ first first-team Academic All-American in football in 1998 with his selection to the team. Kirk maintained a 3.836 grade point average in accounting. Kirk went on to win an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship his final season at ASU. John Burk became the Rams’ fourth Academic All-American in football in 2000 with his selection to the second team. Burk carried a 3.85 grade point average in kinesiology, and played his final season as a Ram while enrolled in the graduate physical therapy program. Josh Hammerquist became the fifth Ram to earn Academic AllAmerica accolades in 2007 with this selection to the second team. Hammerquist graduated with a degree in mathematics after sporting an impressive 3.96 grade point average. He was the runner up for the Lone Star Conference Football Academic Athlete of the Year as a senior. Angelo State has a long tradition of academic honorees. There has been an Academic All-America honoree in nine of the 13 ASU sports.
JOHN BURK
JOSH HAMMERQUIST
Cody Smith was named as the 2009 recipient of the Greg Stokes Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to a Ram football player who has made a major contribution to the team, is an upperclassman with an excellent academic record, and is involved in the San Angelo community. The scholarship winner is selected by a committee. The Stokes Memorial Scholarship was established following the death of linebacker Greg Stokes in a one-car accident on Nov. 5, 1995. Stokes earned first team All-America honors from six different organizations in 1995 following his death and was one of eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded annually to the top player in NCAA Division II football. Stokes was also an Academic All-American for Angelo State, earning second team honors in both 1994 and 1995. “Greg was the kind of player that put people in the stands; they came to watch him play,” former head coach Jerry Vandergriff said. “But he was the kind of person you liked to be around, a good person, hard-worker and friend. He enjoyed playing for the Angelo State fans; he just enjoyed playing football.” For more information on the Stokes Scholarship Fund, or to make a contribution, contact: Greg Stokes Memorial Scholarship, #11023 ASU Station, San Angelo, Texas 76909-1023; (325) 942-2117. HARLON HILL TROPHY The top award for football players at the NCAA Division II level is the Harlon Hill Trophy. The trophy, established in 1986 by a group of residents of the Shoals area in Alabama, is named in honor of Harlon Hill. Hill was a small college AllAmerican receiver at Florence State Teachers College (now University of North Alabama). Hill went from an unknown college player to the National Football League Rookie of the Year in 1954. The following season he caught 42 passes for 789 yards and nine TD’s to earn the Jim Thorpe Trophy as the NFL Most Valuable Player. The trophy was designed to highlight the achievements of athletes at the Division II level, which are often overlooked for players at the I and IA level. The award is given annually to the player selected as the best in Division II by the over 100 sports information directors at institutions competing in football. The award is presented annually during the week of the NCAA Division II championship game. Players are nominated from across the country. The nominations are reviewed by a regional committee, which selects players for inclusion on the regional ballot. Two winners are selected from each of the four NCAA regions by a vote of SIDs in that region. Those eight players comprise the national ballot, from which the winner is selected. During the years, Angelo State has nominated several players for the award, with two players reaching the final national ballot of eight. In 1997, quarterback Erik Hartman finished sixth in the national voting, after leading ASU to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and finishing second in the nation in total offense. ASU’s only other finalist was in 1995, when linebacker Greg Stokes finished sixth in the national voting. The list of ASU candidates includes some of the finest players ever to wear a Ram uniform. 42

HALL OF FAME RAMS PIERCE HOLT Holt was one of 11 inductees into the 1997 Divisional Class for the hall. The Hall of Fame only began admitting members from Division II and Division III institutions in 1995. Holt was chosen from more than 200 nominees from the NCAA Division IAA, II, III and NAIA schools. Holt began his career at ASU at a late age for football players (22), and with a condition known as amblyopia, a congenital condition that left him with only 10 percent vision in his left eye. He overcame every obstacle to become a consensus All-American, a two-time LSC Defensive Player of the Year, and the Small College Defensive Player of the Year in 1987. When the defensive tackle stepped off the ASU playing field in 1987, he moved on to a professional football career that few players can match - two Super Bowl rings along with all-Pro honors and two Pro Bowl appearances. Holt was equally hard working in the classroom, earning first team Academic All-LSC honors in both 1986 and 1987. He attended ASU on a Carr Scholarship, and received his degree in physical education with honors in 1987, and has completed hours towards a master’s degree. Holt retired from professional football in 1996, concluding his career with the Atlanta Falcons, after several seasons playing with the San Fransisco 49ers.
GRANT TEAFF The legendary coach Grant Teaff entered the Hall of Fame in the 2001 class. Teaff coached at Angelo State from 1969 to 1971, leading the rams to a 19-11 mark in his three seasons. He never had a losing campaign at ASU, and led the Rams to a 38-21 win over the numberone ranked Javelinas of Texas A&I in 1970. Teaff, a native of nearby Snyder, Texas, began his education at San Angelo Junior College (which became Angelo State), and received his bachelor’s degree from McMurry in 1956. He began coaching at Lubbock High, and then moved on to McMurry in 1957, as an assistant, and became head coach there in 1960. After a short stint as an assistant at Texas Tech, Teaff arrived at ASU in 1969. Following his career at ASU, Teaff moved to Baylor, where he guided the Bears to two Southwest Conference titles and eight bowl appearances. He retired from coaching in 1992, as the all-time winningest coach at Baylor. He was honored by ASU in 1995 with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Teaff now serves as the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, a position he has held since 1994. The AFCA is one of the most powerful groups in intercollegiate athletics, and Teaff has guided the group into the strong position they enjoy today.
RODNEY CASON Rodney Cason, an Angelo State and San Angelo Lake View High School graduate, was one of six players and three coaches inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Cason was an offensive tackle who played for Angelo State from 1969 to 1971. Cason became the first Ram to become a three time NAIA All-American, and he and fellow College Football Hall of Fame member Pierce Holt, and Greg Stokes are the only Angelo State players to hold the distinction of being a three-time All-American. Cason also earned second team honors twice from Associated Press. Cason was also a three-time, first team all-Lone Star Conference selection during his career in a Ram uniform. Cason was the captain of the 1971 Ram team and was a major part of a permanent Angelo State turnaround. The Rams had four consecutive losing seasons prior to 1969, but had winning seasons the next three years with Cason starting at tackle, and the program has had only two losing seasons in the 34 years since. He also led the Ram team to a 7-3 record in 1971, which included an appearance in the NAIA National Semifinals. Cason was an 11th round draft choice of the New England Patriots in 1972. Following his career in football, he was briefly a teacher and high school coach. More recently he has pursued what has become a successful career in the oil industry. He currently lives in Alaska where he is Operations Superintendent for Tesoro Petroleum. ANGELO STATE FOOTBALL RECORDS

IN THE PROS Eleven Rams have played in the NFL with three different former ASU football players contributing to five different Super Bowl teams. Several others have spent time in NFL camps or on practice squads. Angelo State has also placed several athletes in different professional football leagues during the years, including the USFL, CFL, Arena League and World Football League. Former Angelo State quarterback Josh Neiswander became the latest Ram to sign a professional contract as a quarterback with two-time defending Canadian Football League champion Montreal.
