Regina:ImovedtoAtlantain1986andmetJoyceFenderellaIrbyandstartedworkingwithherin 1992andshebroughtmeintoKlymaxx.So,thesongslikeMeetingintheLadiesRoomandIMissU werealreadyinmotion.Mymusicalcontributioniswiththelaterrecordingslikethenewsingle "TakeUBack".However,beingapartofoneofthe1stfemalegroupsanddefinitelyoneofthe baddesthastrulybeenablessing.I'vehadtheopportunitytotravelandperformallofthewonder music.So,yeswhenIhearanyofsongsontheradio,itstillsoundsasrelevantandfunkyasitdid over30yearsago!

Dr.Titus:Sincewritingthisbook,many haveaskedmewhyIchosetowritea children’sbookandfurthermore,whya children’spolicingbook.Myreasonsstem fromseveraldifferentareas.Firstand foremost,isaresponsibilityIfeeltothe children.Throughoutthelastfewyearswe haveseenmorepolice-communityconflict thaninmanyofyearsprecedingthose. Morerecenttragediesoccurringatthe handsofpoliceledtoprotestsandviolence inthestreets.Additionally,conversationsat home,aroundthedinnertable,andin familyandlivingroomswerefocusedon policing,howbadthepoliceare,andhow

explainthattherearesomebadpolice officers,justastherearebaddoctors,bad lawyers,andbadautomechanics,etc.Our childrenneedtoknowtheevilthatexist, whilealsoknowingthattheyshouldnotwalk infear,becauseevilisnottheonlythingthat exist,thereisgoodandbadinallfacetsoflife. Byknowingandunderstandingthis,our futureadultscanlearntoassesseach situationindividuallyandtheninteract accordingly.

GrinderZZ:Sincewe'velastspoke,there's beenatremendousamountofcraziness betweenthe,public,andofficer'swhothink they'rebeyondthelaw.What'syourinputon policing,everythingthat'sbeenhappening? howbadthepoliceare,andhow theyshouldbedefunded,etc.Inmanyof theseconversations,allpolicewerebad, andnonecouldbetrusted.Asadults,we areallentitledtoouropinions,andweare freetofeelorthinkaboutissuesaswe please.TheconcernthatIheldwiththese conversationswasthatinmanycases,the childrenwerethereorinearshot,when theseconversationsweretakingplace. Whenachildhearsthatapersonoragroup ofpeoplearebadandshouldbeavoided,it instillsfearintheirhearts.Childrencannot dissectwhatthatreallymeans,theycan onlybeafraid;afraidtogotothepolicein anemergency,afraidwhenthepolicestop theirparents,andworstofall–afraidwhen theyarestoppedbythepolice.Evenifthat stopoccursyearslaterwhentheyareolder, thefearhasbeeninstilledalready.Afear thatwillsurfaceduringapoliceinteraction andcanlooklikeaggression,defiance,and

everythingthat'sbeenhappening?

Dr.Titus:Firstandforemost,thereareindividualsinpolicingthatdonotbelonginlaw enforcement.Therearewaysofthinkingthatdonotbelonginpolicing,andfromwhatIam seeing–theyarebeingidentifiedandweededout.TheCriminalJusticeSystemandPolicingin theU.S.arenotperfectinstitutions;howevertheyaregoingthroughtremendoustransitionright now.Injusticesarebeingaddressedliketheyneverwerebefore.Someofthedecisions,policies, programs,andadvancementsweareseeingtodayaresomeoftheachievementsourancestors werefightingfordecadesago.Convictions,ruleandpolicychanges,promotions,elections, etc…thereisprogress.Forchangetooccur,theremustbestruggle,andthatiswhatwehave seenoverthelastfewdecades,andthingsarechanging.Thereisstillalottodoandmanymore battlestobefoughtandwon,somewillcomeeasyandsoon,whileotherswillbedifficultand taketime.Basedonthedirectionthingsaregoing,Ipredictthatwewillseelessinjusticeand morejusticeonourstreetsandinourcourtrooms,overthenextfewdecades.However,forthat tohappen,ourpeoplemustgetinvolvedandbepartofthesolution.Notjustbyprotesting,but bygettingintolaw,policing,politics,etc.Policedepartmentswillneverbeabolished,and defundinghurtsourcommunities,aswecanseebytheriseincrimeandviolenceinour communitiesthroughoutthecountry.Thekeyishavingrepresentationinpolicingatthehighest levels,incorrectionsatthehighestlevels,inpoliticsatthehighestlevels,inthecriminaljustice systemandthecourtroomsatthehighestlevels.Thatishowwegaintraction,thatishowwe rightwrongs,thatishowwewin!

Dr.Titus:Wearealldoingwell.Wehaveallremainedhealthyandhavelearnedtoadjusttothe newwayoflivingthatthepandemichascreated.Wehavebecomemoregratefulforeachother andhavelearnedtocherishthemomentswecansharetogether.Ithasbeenanadjustment.

Cheryl:MynameisCherylSong.Alotof peo-pleaskmeifthatismy“stage name”butbelieveitornot,thatisthe legalnamethatIwasbornwith.I rememberwhenIwasachild,Iusedto hatemylastname,becausethekidsin schoolwouldcallmeSingSong,orask mewhywasn’tmynameCherylMu-sic –justsillystufflikethat.AndI wonderedwhyIdidn’thaveanamelike SmithorJones(Iwasinelementary schoolatthetime,anddidn’tknowthe originoflastnames).ButnowIlovemy lastname–becauseIDOlovemusic, andmynameiscatchyandeveryone remembersit.

I’moneofthefewpeoplewhowas actuallybornandraisedinLosAngeles. It’sagreatcity,andI’veseensomany changesthathavegoneonbothgood andbad.Iwenttoapre-dominantly Asianelementaryschool,whereIwas anexcellentstudent–theyevenletme skipthe5thgrade.Itwasn’tuntilmiddle schoolandHighSchool(Iwentto DorseyHighSchool)whereIwas exposedtodifferenteth-nicities.But goingtoDorseyHighschool,whichwas predominantlyBlack,allowedmeto learnhowtogetalongwitheverybody, whichwasagreatbenefit.

Cheryl:ComingfromverystrictAsianparents,I didn’tstartdancing‘tilaverylateage.Asachild watchingTV,dancingwassomethingforthe prettyWhiteladies,notforsomeonewholooked likeme.AndgrowingupinthefamilythatIhad, weweren’tallowedtospeakuporvoicehowwe felt.ThatwasNOTallowed.SoIlearnedhowto bottleupmyfeelings(whichwasbetterthan gettingyelledatforspeakingup).ButIfoundout thatdancingwasawayIcouldexpressmyself withoutspeaking–andthatwasmyreleaseand probablymysavinggrace.Butitreallywasn’t untilhighschool,whereIstarteddancing.

GrinderZZ:Atwhatagedidyoufirstdiscoveryour dancingtalents?

AndIlovedwatchingmy Blackclassmatesdance, andIwantedtodanceas goodasthem.That’swhenI reallydiscoveredthatIhada knackforexpressingmyself throughphysicalmovement. ItookallthedanceclassesI couldinschool,butwhenI wantedtobeadancemajor incollege,Ihadsuch backlashfrommypar-ents. MymotherTOLDmethatI wasgoingtomajorinei-ther mathorscience,butmy fathertoldmetodo whateverIwantedbecauseI wouldneverbeanything anyways.

GrinderZZ:Growingup,what typeofmusicdidyoulike, andwhowereyourfavorite artists?

Cheryl:Sincemyfirstlove wasdance,Ialways gravitatedto-wardsdance music,anythingwithagood beatandapromi-nent baseline.Whetheritwas disco,R&Borpopifitwas danceable–thatwasmy music!Growingup,my favoriteartistswereThe JacksonsandThe Temptations–butmy favoriteartistofalltimeis andwillalwaysbeMichael Jack-son.Hewasthebest dancer,secondtonone,and hismusicwassoincredible –itjustmadeyouwantto dance. Cheryl:Yes,peopleDIDlookatmedifferentlybecauseIdidn’t dancelikeaWhitegirl(laughing).Eveninhighschool,myBlack friendssaidIhad“Soul”andIwasveryproudofthatonethingthat setmeasidefromeveryoneelse.Ican’ttellyouwhatthey nicknamedme,butitwasveryfunny.

Cheryl:WhenSoulTrainmovedfromChicagotoLosAngeles,they wentaroundtoalotoftheBlackhighschoolstofinddancers. GoingtothepredominantlyBlackDorseyHighschool,Iknewsome ofthestudentsthereweredancersonSoulTrain.Iknewtwoguys thatdancedontheshowandIsawthemlookingatmeand whisperingtoeachotherlaughing.Thentheycameuptomeand outofthebluesaid,“We’regoingtobringyouonSoulTrain”–andI (kindofinshock)said“Okay”–andthatwasthat!

Cheryl:Actually,Ididnothaveto auditionforeitherMichaelJacksonor RickJames.ForRickJames’ “Superfreak”–Igotaphonecallfrom

oneoftheotherfemaleSoulTrain dancersnamedLeslie.Shetoldmethat theywantedmetobeinaRickJames video,gavemethedateandlocation anditwasassimpleasthat.WhenIgot there,RickJameswastellingjokes throughouttheentireshootandhad everybodyinstitches.RickandIsortof ranaroundinthesamecircles,sohe knewwhoIwasandimmediately startedkiddingaroundwithmethe minuteIgotontheset.Hewassogreat toworkwith,andifhewasn’tamusician,hedefinitelycouldhavebeena comedian.

MichaelandIkneweachother,andIhad workedwithhimonseveralotheroccasions.We hadseveralconversationsoverthephone.He wouldcallmeandtellmewhathewantedor whatheneeded,andIwouldfacilitatethat.One timehecalledmebecausehewantedtolearn howtodowhatwascalledatthetime–the “Backslide”.HewasveryinsistentaboutitandI toldhimnottoworry,thatIwouldfindhimthe rightpeopletoteachhim.Thatbecamewhatis nowknownasthe“Moonwalk”andIamso proudtohavebeenresponsibleforthat.Iwent tovisithimwhilehewasfilming“BillyJean”.
