Kelly:Actually,Mr.Brownwasonmymom'sTVshowseveraltimes,butthefirsttimehe cameonmyradarwaswhenweweredoingafundraiserforTheAugustaChildren'sTheatre, wedid"AColePorterReview"andMr.Brownwasinattendance.Ididn'tknowhewasinthe audience.Iwas16yearsold.AllIrememberwasattheendoftheperformance,mymother gotonstageandaskedthepatronstodonatewhattheycouldtokeepoursmalltheatre alive.Mr.Brownstoodupand,withawadofcashinhishand,walkeduptothestageand askedtheaudiencetomatchhisdonation.Hecalledoutsomeofthepatronsbynameand saidthingslike,"Iknowyou'vegotit.Thisisaworthwhilecause.Digdeep"!Hewas wonderful!Hewassocharismatic;everyonewaswritingchecksandputtingcashinthebox mymomhad.Hewassocharming.Iwasimpressedandverygrateful.

Kelly:MyyearsofstageexperiencedidnothingtopreparemeforbeingonstagewithThe JamesBrownBandandMr.Brown.Iwasverynervous,butI'dspentanentireweek rehearsingwithMarthaHigh,whowasheadBittersweet,thebackgroundsingers.Marthawas veryprofessionalandtaughtmethedancestepsandthevocalparts.Shewaspatientand generous.ShegavemetipsonhowtolookgoodsingingANDdancing.Itmightlookeasy,but itwashardatfirst.Allthepracticepaidoff,andeventhoughIwassonervous,Ifeltpretty confident.Mr.Brown'scatalogissoextensive.Ittookmeabouttwoyearsbeforehe'dcall outasong,andIknewit!Wealwaysrehearsed.Wewerealwaysmakingitasperfectas possible.Ireallyappreciatethat,too!Ittakeslotsofdedicationtomakesomethinglookeasy andeffortless.Lotsofhourswentintomakinghisshowaswonderfulasitwas.

Daryl:Ialwaystellpeople,allofthetime,thereweretwo differentpeople.TherewasJamesBrown,whoentertainedthe world,andthentherewasJamesJosephBrown,whowasmy dad.WhenIwasakidandwouldseehimonTVshows,itmade mesmile.MymotherandIwouldwatchhimandthenthere weretimeswewenttoshows,towatchhimintheflesh.Iused togoandhangoutwithmydadandthebandmembersback stage,attheApollo,inHarlem,wherehewouldperformshows. Yougottorealize,Iwasaveryhumbleguygrowingup,inNew Jersey.Ididn'twantpeopletoknowwhomyfatherwas, becauseIknew,then,theywouldtreatmedifferently.Iwanted tobearegular,normaltypeofkid,likeeveryoneelse.SoI alwayskeptitasecretonwhomyfatherwas,exceptformy closefriends.Theyallknewhewasmydad.

GrinderZZ:Haveyoualwaysplayedtheguitar,mostofyour life?

Daryl:No,I,actually,wasadrummer.IwasinabandwhenI wasakidandIplayedthedrums.Icanplaymyassoff,too!My dadboughtmemy1stdrumsetattheageoffive.Whenhe askedmetojoinhisband,TheSoulGenerals,hethensaidforme tolearnhowtoplaytheguitar.ItoldhimIwouldratherplaythe drumsandhisresponsewas,“Thedrummerismoreintheback andIwantmysoninthefrontnexttome,sotheentireworld canseehim.”Thatmademesmile.

Roosevelt:Thereactionfrommysonandmydaughterandtheirmomandalotofmyrelatives wasprettystrange.IguesstheyneverexpectedmetodothethingsthatIwasdoing.Ihadtried totellhimaboutmypast,inthemusicbusiness,andIonlyhadafewphotostoshowany referencetoit.So,whenitfinallytookoffagain,withMr.Brown,fulltime,theywerereally shockedthatIhadthiscloserelationshipwithhimandwehadresumedeverythinglikenothing everhappened;whichnothingeverhappened,exceptIgotalittleolderandhadkids.HeGot Discocameoutandtheykindofslowthingsdownforhim,buthealwaysmadesurewestayed intouchandhealwayssentmeafewdollarstodothingswithZell.Mykidsknewandmyfamily knewthatIhadafriendinJamesBrown.

Roosevelt:ThecraziestthinganyonedidtogetclosetoMr.Brown,Iwouldsay,iswhenwe wereatthePeabodyHotel,inMemphis,Tennessee,outsideofthefrontentranceandayoung whitegirl,Isay,shewaslike18or19yearsold,walkeduptohimandjustgrabbedhisbutt cheeksandsaidshehadtodothat.Itshockedhimsobadthathedidn’tevenknowwhattosay. Hecouldn’tdoanythingbutlaugh,aswealldid,butshehadbothhandsfullofhisbuttcheeks. Thatwascrazy.

Paul:WelivedinConnecticut,butwewerevisitingmy fatherandstepmother,inNorthCarolina,forChristmas, in2006.Mywifewasn’tthereyet,butIwastherewith mydaughterwhowas13yearsold,atthetime.Andmy wifecalledupmystepmothertotellherthatMr.Brown passedawayandshewokemeuptotellmeandIjust startedcrying.Iwokemydaughterupandshejust huggedme.So,whenmywifegotthere,shesaid,“You know,webetterdrivetoAugusta,Georgia,tothe funeral,oryouwillneverforgiveyourself.IfIwould’ve beenhomeinConnecticut,Iwould’vegonetothe Apollo,butsinceIwasthere,itreallymadesenseforme togo.So,mywifeandIwent.Westoppedatthestatue andwestayedforthewholefuneralandsomeonetold uswewereactuallyonTVforafewseconds,onCNN, becausetheywereplayingitlive.MywifeisFilipinoand IamofItaliandescent,somaybethatlookedinteresting tothemtokeepthecameraon.Idon’tknow.Itwasan amazingexperience,toreallycelebratedMr.Brown’s life.
