What is a habit? It is something you do without thinking at a certain time each day like brushing your teeth. Having an afternoon cup of tea or meditating each evening before bed. Below are 3 tips on how to create good habits.

Setting habits There are good and bad habits. Setting good habits do assist with the reaching of a goal. If you wanted to run a 5K run you wouldn’t take off and run 5k’s in one run if you have never run before, you’d train and build up to running a 5k run. You would put a plan in place to assist you and commit to the plan. With the many apps available you might even look at using an app like couch to 5k which will assist with building the running habit that will enable you to reach your goal.

In the above example, you can see if you have a goal it is the motivation and focus that helps you to achieve it. When the activity is completed regularly enough it moves from motivation to a habit.

3 steps to set up new habits. Self-motivation – If you have a large goal create small steps to help you reach it. The small steps form habits that assist with reaching the goal. One of my goals is to walk 10,000 steps a day, so I built up a habit of walking 30 minutes a day, the 30 minutes a day doesn't give me 10,000 steps but it adds to the steps I do each day and brings me daily towards my goal. And what about business? In business, it too is possible to break down activities and build on motivation to build a habit so that you can inch closer to your goal each day. In business I work with a daily method of operation (DMO), I list out the five things I need to complete that day and complete them on a daily basis. Set a behaviour pattern – If your goal is to write a blog, set up a pattern, after lunch today, turn off distractions and sit down and write a blog. By setting up a behaviour pattern you are building a routine into your life that will turn the activity into a habit. With the example above of my DMO, I set up a habit 69 days ago to work on my daily five tasks between 7pm and 9pm. I found that a few of the tasks were best completed earlier in the day as they fitted in around my current activities. However, it is not until 9pm at night I tick off the list of 5. Don’t give up – Be part of the process and commit to the result. If you feel you are about to give up, look for the trigger and see if there are ways that you can resolve the feeling and continue towards your goal. You may find a few small things may assist you in staying focused on the outcome, like putting gym clothes out ready the night before or writing out pointers for your blog when you think of them so you don’t have writer's block the minute you sit down to write. I hear you, you're saying you can't walk because it is raining. Ok, the environment doesn't always fit in with our goals but this is still an excuse. If the rain is light, dress appropriately for a short walk, you will feel amazing after. If it is heavy rain, look at alternatives like attending a gym and using a treadmill or doing some exercise at home. We have so much available with today's technology at our figure tips today. By focussing on the goal and the setting of new habits you can change and reach your dreams and goals in life. I’ve been learning to get confident on video, to put this in my daily chain of activities I have linked the video with my daily 30-minute walk. On the walk, I take my iPhone and selfie stick and shoot a 2-minute video. Later that day I upload to YouTube and share this with family and friends. I've been enjoying this process.
