COVER STORY
Greta is truly a once-in-a-lifetime dog. Greta finished as a young dog, making her own majors by beating specials. She then went off to the field where she quickly earned her Junior Hunter. My sister, Allison Chism, received an invitation to the Westminster Kennel Club with her GWP, Chase. It has always been a dream of mine to exhibit at Westminster, so I decided to enter Greta and hope her entry would make it in. I began showing her to get her ready for Westminster, and the journey began there. We started specialing her in January of this year at just a year old, and in no time, she garnered a Reserve Best in Show, 9 Group Firsts, 30 group placements, 16 Owner Handled Best in Shows, and is a Best in Specialty winner. She is currently ranked #1 Owner Handled All Breeds and is the #1 GWP Bitch All Systems. Greta is the only GWP ranked in the Top 5 with a hunting title and that is CHIC as well. Not only is Greta a beautiful example of the breed, but her temperament is her most beautiful feature. She is sound, up for any challenge, makes friends everywhere she goes, and is the most amazing companion. As a full-time college student nearing my bachelor’s degree in Biology, I would have never thought I would be able to take Greta this far with the number of courses I am taking. I am very thankful to my sister, Allison Chism, for always taking her lead and showing her so beautifully when I am unable to. I am beyond thankful to Marion Hancock, with whom I bred and own Greta, for allowing us to travel the country with Greta this year and always supporting us. The amount of success Greta has achieved at such a young age is a testament to over 40 years of preservation breeding. As a third-generation breeder, I am beyond thankful for my grandma, Christine Whitmore, and my mom, Christi Chism, for allowing Allison and me to carry on the Afterhours legacy. Greta is always breeder-owner handled. I am so excited to see what the future has in store for Team Greta, as we are just getting started!

President’s Message
Summer is winding down, hunting season is just around the corner! The other event just around the corner is our GWPCA National being held in Michigan this year. For anyone that helps put on this monumental task –thank you! And anyone that thinks it’s easy, volunteer for next year!! I may sound like a broken record, but it takes a village to get everything ready for this event – and with conformation, rally, obedience, hunt test, field trial and water test – not to mention the premium, catalog ads, merchandise, raffle and food, there are an amazing number of moving parts. Please be kind to our volunteers.
Hope you all have a great hunting season, travel safely and see you soon.
Editors’ Message
Dearest Readers,
Thank you to everyone who rushed and got their articles and ads on in time. I pushed up the deadline and tried to rapidly finish the Fall Issue after just having the Summer one go to print. If all has gone well that means that the issue has arrived before Nationals.
If we missed the deadline and it didn’t make it in time. I am truly sorry. Lacey, Angie, and I really tried.
As always I appreciate everyone who sent in their parts. I can’t wait to meet everyone at Nationals; and finally see the people I’ve known behind a computer for four years in person.
Your Editor, Gabriella
Breeder Spotlight with Heiss Draht
by Karen Potter
1. What is your kennel name? Where/how did you come up with this?
We breed GWPs under the prefix “Heiss Draht” which translates to Hot Wire. My mom’s kennel had already been established as West Wind Kennels, LLC, however, when we attempted to register using West Wind as a prefix, it was already in use. We needed something quick which is how “Heiss Draht” began.
2. Have you bred other breeds under this kennel name? Another kennel name?
We breed Vizslas under the prefix “Scout ‘em Out” as we were in the same situation with registration. Scout ‘em Out, Scout, was our first vizsla and is still in the pedigree of all our vizslas.
3. When did you start breeding GWPs? What made you choose this breed?
My first GWP puppy came to me in 2000. He was a solid liver male primarily from NAVHDA breeding. I trained and handled him to his AKC championship, NAVHDA Utility Prize II and Rally Novice titles as a teenager. Wesley was where it all began and I haven’t looked back.
Wesley was from a family friend’s litter out of a dam that we had trained and knew. My vizsla that I was using for AKC Junior Showmanship at the time very much disliked the show ring so Wesley was brought into our family to be my new junior showmanship and 4-H dog. We never knew how far it would go from there.
Our first litter arrived in 2004 out of a female we had purchased again from NAVHDA lines. That first litter obtained a NAVHDA NA Breeder’s Award. We no longer have any of our original dogs in our pedigrees but they sucked me into the breed and I never left.
4. What is your most memorable moment involving a GWP?
My most memorable moment is the day running and hearing Bonza’s first NAVHDA Utility Prize I scores being read. I was in Ohio and had traveled without my parents as they had other commitments. I remember calling my mom 10 times trying to reach her after his field work as I was so proud of his performance. I wanted to tell her so badly that I just kept dialing the number until she finally answered. This day would be followed very closely by running Bonza in the NAVHDA Invitational. While he
didn’t pass, he had very impressive scores. Every score was passing except the honor at the blind where he had a zero. That day, he proudly performed a beautiful retrieve rather than performing the honor.
5. What is your most embarrassing moment involving a GWP?
Living with Wesley was like living with a comedian. I’m sure there are many stories I am forgetting through the years. I can remember taking a win photo and after the photo was taken Wesley was able to release himself from my hold and promptly absconded with the photographer’s toy. He proudly pranced himself around the ring multiple times while we attempted to catch him. Bait meant nothing and it wasn’t until we offered him another toy that he decided to come to me.
6. Who has been your mentor and what was their breed?
I was very fortunate in my early years with GWPs to meet and travel with Helen Witt (Lookout) and Lisa George (Ripsnorter). Their guidance and mentorship will always mean the world to me. I could not have lucked into meeting better people. Bonza has fostered a friendship with Trisha Bond (Kobnko). Trish has been incredible to be able to discuss different pedigrees and dogs and is always available to listen to my ideas.
There are people that come into your life with perfect timing. My years in Vizslas has brought me to Julia Bonar (Keystone). Some of you may know her from her involvement in GWPs as she was the proud owner of DC
Backwoods Keystone Holy Moses. I know I can always go to Julia to discuss anything dogs or life.
My most important mentors and biggest supporters as many would suspect are my mom, Valerie Potter and Dad, Mike Potter. I am fortunate to have a partner to follow all my crazy ideas and dreams. When I was a kid, my mom primarily had FDSB English Setters that participated in Cover Dog Trials. As we ventured into the Vizslas and GWPs, I brought an entire new world to my family - traveling to dog shows during the off season and diving into the NAVHDA system of testing. Mom also raises all the puppies and I couldn’t sing her praises louder when it comes to the care and exposure that the puppies receive. Dad is always there - as a pack mule and chauffeur as he would say - but spends hours following us around the fields, shooting birds and helping any way he can. While he doesn’t train or show, he is an integral part of everything we do and accomplish.
7. What is your ‘day job’?
I am a mixed animal veterinarian in rural Michigan.
8. Do you have any skills or talents your fellow GWPCA members may not know about you?
A talent from my past: I danced competitively in tap, jazz and lyrical in my preteen years.
9. Describe a GWP in three words: Loyal, Driven, Bold

The Changing Face of Rescue
This has been a year filled with lots of changes. As usual we see the shelter dogs either owner surrenders or dogs that have been abandoned. We have had an increase in bonded pairs of dogs being surrendered. We helped five dogs from a hoarding case in Indiana and a beautiful liver male from a cruelty/neglect case in Connecticut. This was my first experience working with a prosecutor. We have been able to successfully rehome all these GWPs and many more.
The increase in phone calls for help is staggering. We have helped over seventy dogs already this year. Somedays I receive multiple calls for help. Many more people are reaching out with questions regarding behavior and training. I encourage them to reach out to their breeders for support. Long work hours for many families mean GWPs are sitting in crates while owners work double shifts just to make ends meet.
The biggest change this year is an increase in help being requested for puppies. One North Carolina family decided to breed their male and female before having their girl spayed. They had nine healthy puppies and by 8 weeks none of the puppies had sold. After doing some social media research the owner found four other litters in North Carolina. She reached out to me for help. Seven puppies were available and all seven had new homes within one week.
Two weeks later I received a call from a woman in Alabama. She owns a female Drahthaar and a male GWP. Apparently while she was a work one day, and the female was in season both dogs broke out of their crates. The result was eleven puppies and at fourteen weeks not one puppy had sold. I posted them immediately and had 27 applications by morning.
Unfortunately, not everyone is honest or reputable and the owner/breeder had commented on my post for people to contact her directly. The next morning, I had an adopter for a specific puppy and when I reached out, I was told she just sold that puppy. I explained that is not how we operate and after a couple rude comments by her I deleted the post. It takes a tremendous amount of time and manpower to check references on multiple adopters. Almost daily I see a post with at least one or two older puppies from litters that did not sell.
Gundog Breeder.com shows 332 German Wirehaired Pointer Breeders. That number is staggering. My fear is that this trend will continue, and we will see many more litters in the next couple years.
I want to thank all of you for your continued support as we continue to grow and help more GWPs. Many members reached out to me when our secretary, Sue Anderson was gravely ill and unable to help. She has been my right hand for many years and members reached out to offer to check references on potential fosters and adopters. We have placed nineteen GWPs in roughly six weeks so again thank you for continuing to help and support Rescue.

Game Bird Pot Pie
Ingredients
14 ounces basic pastry dough divided in half and rolled into 2 - 12-inch circles
3 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup each diced carrot celery and onion
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup half and half
1/4 cup dry white wine
2 1/2 cups game bird breast meat cut into 1-inch pieces
6 strips cooked bacon crumbled
1 1/2 cups artichoke hearts quartered
1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper
8 ounces shredded jack cheese
1 egg mixed with 1/2 teaspoon cold water
Instructions
1. Heat butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add carrot, celery and onion and saute 3 - 4 minutes. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook for 2 - 3 minutes while stirring. Stir in a few tablespoons of half and half, stir and repeat until all of the half and half is incorporated into the pan and mixture is smooth. Stir in wine. Allow mixture to cool.
2. Place one of the pastry circles in the bottom of a lightly greased pie pan. Combine meat, bacon, artichoke hearts, salt and pepper. Arrange mixture over pastry in pie pan. Sprinkle cheese over. Pour cooled sauce over and top with second pastry circle. Crimp top edges together, trim and discard excess pastry. Brush top with egg mixture.
3. Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 30 - 35 minutes or until top is golden brown and sauce is bubbley. Allow to cool for 3 - 4 minutes before serving.
The Uncommon Performance Prospect by Sarah Saddoris
I spent the majority of my adolescence either at Obedience trials or preparing for one. After begging my mother for a Border Collie, I ended up with a wirehaired Dachshund and thus began my love affair with bearded creatures. I later got a fieldbred Golden Retriever, Circus, who was out of one of the few AFC OTCH dogs ever.
For years, I was never interested in Conformation and had very little appreciation for the sport—I had no understanding of what makes a dog durable. The severe breed split in Golden Retrievers certainly discouraged whatever inkling of interest I would have had for conformation—I had no intention of being laughed out of the ring with my field-bred dog.
By the time I was searching for my next sports prospect, however, I had a much better understanding of canine structure and breed standards. I originally wanted one of the “big three” sports breeds: Labs, Goldens, and Border Collies. I combed through dozens of websites looking for a kennel producing dogs with relatively high drive dogs, correct structure, and moderate coats.
ahead. I intend to pursue more field titles with him, as well as agility, obedience, and tracking titles. He has exceeded my expectations; he has a great off switch, but can handle an eight-mile hike in the morning directly followed by agility training, and a tracking session to conclude our evening. I could not be happier with my decision to get a GWP as my show, sport, and field prospect; I know he is only limited by own capabilities and resources.
*Article was originally published in the Fall 2019 WireNews.
I eventually gave up this search and turned my attention to other breeds with less severe show-field splits. The first breed that piqued my interest was the German Wirehaired Pointer. They seemed to have everything thing I was looking for—a moderate split between field and show, lots of drive, and breeders producing dogs earning both field and show titles. The beard sealed the deal for me.
My GWP is now just a little over a year old. He has already earned a handful of titles and I’m excited for what lies
The Invitational - NAVHDA’s Premier Hunt Test
The Invitational is NAVHDA’s premier hunt test, and was held September 11-15, 2024 in Searsboro, Iowa hosted by the Hawkeye Chapter. The Invitational is the ultimate test of both dog and trainer. In this test, dogs are required to: 1) run an hour field brace with another dog, point and retrieve upland birds, and honor its bracemate’s point and retrieve, 2) do a blind retrieve over water of approximately 100 yards, 3) honor another dog’s waterfowl retrieve, and 4) do a double marked retrieve. To learn more about the invitational visit navhda.org and “About the NAVHDA Testing System”
We would like to Congratulation the follow members on earning the NAVHDA Versatile Champion Title.

AKC Delegate Report
by Joan Payton
Parent Club Committee
The Pat Lawrence Difference Maker Awards were given to: Maribeth O’Neil (a longtime friend), Susan Hamill, Patti Strand (NAIA) & Larry Sorensen 195 breeds have submitted health statements for inclusion on AKC Marketplace, Bred with Heart, and Breeder of Merit. It states what health testing a buyer should be looking for when searching for a puppy. I checked marketplace and the GWPCA has not submitted any information.
Breeder of Merit: One of the requirements to maintain this title is to register every puppy you produce. AKC has started enforcing this rule.
The CDC has temporarily suspended the new importation laws. AKC & NAIA are working with them on making a workable law that will safeguard everyone yet make importation available to responsible breeders.
Farm Bill: this has passed the house. Problematic legislation has been removed. This seems to be a good law.
Registration numbers have dropped in the last year. This seems to be a global trend and pet food suppliers are stating that it is affecting them worldwide also.
Purebred Preservation Bank; zoom meetings are available to Club boards for further discussion and questions. Please watch the webinar first. Donations are being accepted from dogs collected before health testing was available. As much history as possible on the dog is recommended. The hope is that in the future it will be possible to draw a sample from a yet Frozen vial to be tested for health issues.
Field trial/ Hunt test committee: The committee has finished ‘ Best Practices For AKC Hunt Test & Field Trials’. It is a guide for what each person involved, from the chairperson to the safety officer, needs to do to put on an event.
The VCA presented from the floor a request to allow use of ATVs and utvs as an option at field trials. A survey is forthcoming.
Field trial entries are down, 3% and hunt test entries down 5% since 2023
Legislation:
The Puppy Protection act is still out there. A couple of the things on it are prohibiting of breeding females unless it is approved by a veterinarian. They must have a pen long enough to reach full stride when running( can you imagine how long that run is for a dog the size of a wire hair or larger?) and must have an annual dental exam. This act would be very detrimental to the breeding of purebred dogs.
AKC is asking for everyone to write letters to your representatives. The last response was something like 30 people wrote letters against it. The AR agenda writes letters by the thousands. If we don’t fight, we lose our rights. To find out who your lawmaker is, go to The NAIA website or government relations on AKC.org and put in your search data. Then write those letters.
During the Tuesday business meeting on the 10th, two changes to Dog Show Rules were voted on and passed. Committee members were voted on. We were also presented with a forum titled’ Paws and Progress’ with Dr. Brian t. Thomas from the University of Georgia. Some of the things we can control to prevent arthritis are obesity which has a four times greater risk, altering too early. Neutering under 6 months increases the chances of osteoarthritis by 25%! Spaying a female under 6 months increases it by 18%. PennHip evaluations at a young age can be an early detection tool. Early detection is important for quality of life. He shared very interesting info on orthopedics, sports injuries and prosthetics. I highly recommend Dr. Thomas if you’re looking for a speaker. He was very easy to understand, speaking in layman’s terms, and very informative.
AKC celebrated their 140th anniversary on September 14th.
