Across The Pond Recognize The Signs of Bloat

On the Cover - “Digger” In 2002, I watched DC/AFC Cascade Jagd Freund win his first NAFC at Branched Oak. In 2003, I watched him take Runner-up in both the NAFC and NFC at Hungry Valley. Even though I had only seen Jeager perform three times, I knew that my next pup would be out of him. A few weeks after the Nationals, Vern Grimslid called and told me that John and Ruth Schoonover had bred a littermate of his male, Jac, to Jeager. Vern was going to get a female, so I told him to bring me a male pup. I named him “Digger” after a pull-toy dog that my younger brother had when we were kids. For his registered name, I went with John Winger’s (Bill Murray) quote in the movie Stripes, “Chicks dig me because I seldom wear underwear and when I do, it’s usually something unusual.” Digger was trained by Jerry Jordan of Kojac Kennels, but he spends the hunting season with me. We don’t have many birds in Iowa anymore, so we spend 2-4 weeks in North Dakota every year hunting pheasant, sharptail, and Hungarian partridge. Digger has always enjoyed field trials as much as he does hunting wild birds. He drags me to the line every time, and if you have ever seen him before the call-backs he will tell you (and everyone else) how much he likes to retrieve birds. Last Spring I decided that this would be Digger’s last field trial season; he has accomplished everything that I have ever dreamed. I have also decided to take a hiatus from trialing for a few years to prepare for retirement and save my vacation days for hunting. I have had a lot of fun, traveled to interesting places, and met many great people since I became involved in the dog games and I hope to return with another dog or two in a few years. Tony McGrane

Pr e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e 2011 Nationals are over! It’s time to put your wires back to work at their real job. It’s bird season. Be it eastern woodcock, grouse, midwestern pheasants, southern quail, western chukar or water fowl everywhere—get out there and hunt em up. This has been an interesting year with many challenges. There are several positions open that need volunteers. Get involved and help the GWPCA (your club) serve its membership and the GWP. It makes no difference if you are a field trailer, show enthusiast, versatile person and/or a fanatical hunter, we need to work together. One of our concerns has been finances and we must continue to investigate and develop ways to keep our club solvent. Unfortunately, problems can arise even where we think we are making sound financial decisions. For the most part the 2011 Nationals ran smoothly. In an effort to reduce expenses on the trial, a judging change in the open championship and a failure to notify the AKC in advance resulted in probation for the GWPCA trial for the next two years. This means they will be watching us for the next two years. Live and learn. If you have any questions—give me a call.

Fr o m T h e E d i t o r As the interim editor I have really enjoyed putting together this issue for the membership. I have learned a lot about publishing and have a new appreciation for the Wire~News editors of the past. While being editor of the Wire~News requires you to dedicate a bit of time, it is also very rewarding to see your hard work in print and to help reach all the members with GWPCA news. As you will see in the Open GWPCA positions section of this edition, the Wire~News editor position is still open. The person who fills that position can count all all the help that I can offer from my experiences as interim editor, and you will also have Ellen’s help as an experienced editor from the last three years. If you are considering this position please feel free to contact me and I would be more than happy to talk with you. To get this edition of the Wire~News out the door it took the collaboration of many people. I could not have completed this edition of the Wire~News without everyone’s help. Many people contributed National write-ups, results and pictures. AKC Delegate’s Report By Pat Laurans

Last summer the GWPCA Board of Directors, via our President Ray Calkins wrote the AKC to disagree with the AKC Policy, passed by the board that would allow dogs with Q registrations Conditionally Registered Dogs ( ones with unknown sires) to run in field trials. Doug Ljungren, AVP of Performance Events let Ray and me know “that at their October meeting the AKC Board concurred with staff’s recommendation to exclude Conditionally Registered dogs from being eligible to participate in the Field Trials effective November 1, 2011.” Also – at their August AKC Board meeting the Board approved the request of the GWPCA “to be eligible to participate in Retriever Hunting Tests. In order to differentiate the title from those earned in Pointing Breed Hunting Tests, a title earned by a GWP in a Retriever Hunting test will include the letter “R” for example : JHR, SHR or MHR. Beginning September 1, 20212, GWP Clubs may apply to become licensed to hold Retriever Hunting Tests if they choose to.” The September Delegates meeting was held in Newark, NJ. As your Delegate on Sunday I participated in a meeting with the 8 other Delegate Committee chairs. On Monday I chaired the Parent Club Committee meeting. One of the items of interest to our club was that the moratorium on the approval of new events will be lifted for Parent Club Specialty Clubs if their event is held in conjunction with an all breed club. It was also announced that Meet the Breed Events will be held in New York City on November 19 & 20 and in Orlando on December 17 & 18. The GWPCA will have a booth at both of these events manned by some of our wonderful members. I also attended two other committee meetings, the Delegates Caucus and participated in the Coordinating Committee meeting. The day ended at 7:00PM On Tuesday the Forum was “Field Events 101” which reviewed the natural instincts of dogs and showed examples of the various events in which pointing breeds, spaniels and retrieving breeds and hounds compete. Elections were held for the 9 Delegate Committees. I am pleased to report that once again I was (unanimously) elected to Chair the Delegate Parent Club Committee. During the meeting we heard and saw numerous reports and videos and voted to approve an amendment that would apply restrictions to someone who misappropriates funds from AKC, an AKC subsidiary or affiliate. We also approved an amendment to establish a Reserve Best In Show – effective July 3, 2012. We were told that AKC has begun a public relations campaign called “Good Things We Do”. Fliers, screen savers etc. are available on www.akc.org for clubs or individuals to download. National Events Coordinator- Job Description • Oversee all national events and regional specialty. • Coordinate with local club if holding a specialty in conjunction with the Nat. • Coordinate with both Show Chair and Field Chairs • Oversee site choices for all events • Choose Committee heads • Report progress to the Board The purpose of having a NEC and standing National Events Committees is to standardize the running of all the National Events and to streamline the redundant tasks that occur each year. It is not the intention of the NEC to take control of the National Events away from the hosting club, but rather to be an overseer and a resource for the host club.

GWP U - Job Description The GWPCA Board of Directors is seeking a chair for GWP University committee to take over the reins from Joy Brewster. The first GWPU was held with the National Events in ’08 with the goal of offering educational opportunities to the breeders, owners, exhibitors and members of the GWPCA. The University is modeled on a similar program used by the Basset Hound Club of America. It is one of the many services provided to GWPCA members. The Chair of the Committee develops topics of interest and educational opportunities for the GWPCA membership at the annual National Events. Topics for the event are proposed to the NEC, then forwarded to the BOD for approval. The Chair plans, organizes and schedules the event in conjunction with the National Events Committee and Local Host Club (when appropriate). The position requires an understanding of the issues of interest to breeders and owners, ability to work independently and as part of the National Events Committee team, willingness to contact speakers, negotiate contracts and solicit input from the membership.

Wire~News Editor - Job Description If you are looking for a challenge and a great way to express your creativity, the GWPCA board is seeking a club member with time and dedication to take on management of the Wire~News. This position can be a really fun job and a great way to interact with GWPCA members but it is also challenging with deadlines. The publication is one of the club’s most tangible benefits. At this time, the editor will work closely with Lacey Wilson who reviews and inputs the ads and other documents into a sophisticated publishing software for uploading to the printer. Following are the requirements and responsibilities. • Must be able to spend up 50 - 75 hours per quarter on WN duties and reliably meet deadlines. • Must be familiar with the GWPCA and its members, and attend some, preferably all, National events. • Must have a computer with Microsoft Office and highspeed Internet access. • Background in print media and basic design skills are helpful, but not required. • Initiate article ideas and find members or contributors to submit them. • Gather articles and advertisements via email through interaction with a variety of club members • Good grammar and language skills needed to edit submissions for clarity and punctuation. • Collect money for advertising and forward to GWPCA Treasurer. • Write editor’s column for each issue and determine page order • Forward all documents to publisher

M e s s a g e Fr o m 2 0 1 1 N a t i o n a l S h o w C h a i r - B a r b Tu c ke r Finally after 2 years of planning and many obstacles to overcome it all finally came together and the 2011 Nationals became history! Wed Sept 28 2011 most of those members of our club that had been working on the Nationals gathered in Ionia to set up rings and get the building ready for the All Breed Obedience trial that was to begin on Thursday 10am. Ft Detroit is a small club unlike most of our clubs and we only have a few that does a lot! We have a great time together and support each other in most of our endeavors, 90% of the planning was working on the budget. This was a huge problem as we were determined that this Nationals would not lose money, therefore it required each chairperson to do a complete budget. During that 2 years the budget remained the number 1 priority and it had to be revised a lot!! Overall we as a club feel that everyone that attended the nationals had a good time and there was a lot of time for socialization and partying. I am not going to give you the winners as you will find that in a different part of the newsletter. Besides, being show chair I had very little time to watch any of the judging as I was always being summoned for a different problem. Thurs evening Ft Detroit hosted a Welcome party where adult beverages and finger foods were served. It gave all of us lots of social time to catch up with friends we had not seen in at least 1 year. Friday was the Ft Detroit Specialty where 49 dogs were judge by Bill Sahloff in the Sweepstakes followed by the Specialty where 130+ dogs were judged by Pat Brenner. Saturday was the National Seeps, Futurity and Maturity. There were 52 dogs in Sweeps judge by Debra Davis, Futurity had 30 dogs judged by Katrin Tazza and Maturity had 11 dogs judged by Lisa Warren. All the judges did a good job and took their time making their choices. Finally the National specialty began on Sunday at 10 am with Judge Eliot More judging 121 dogs to his final selection of BISS. He had some wonderful comments on our breed as a whole so we all should be very proud of the direction we are going. Being Show Chair presented many challenges and lots of hands on work, it requires a 24/7 commitment. I gladly pass the baton to next years chair and wish her well. Thanks to all who attended, heard many nice words of encouragement and help, and very little negative comments. Thanks to all of Ft Detroit that helped make this Nationals possible and now it is a thing of the past. Looking towards the future! Show Chair

GWPCA National Specialty Judges Comments Mr. Elliot More, DVM It was my privilege to judge the conformation classes at this year’s GWPCA National Specialty. The show was held indoors. The ring was more than adequate size with decent matting providing ideal conditions for both myself and the exhibitors. The show was very efficiently run and I had an excellent steward, which always make my job easier.

Overall Impressions I was impressed with the overall quality of the entry. As is common, the quality was deeper in the bitches than in the dogs. The quality in the specials class was excellent. Heads, eye color, and correct coats were consistent. There were very few missing teeth. There were more shallow and narrow chests that I’d like to see. This was often coupled with a little too much leg which ruins the “slightly longer than tall” balance I would like to see. There were zero temperament issues which is very impressive in an entry of this size. Croups and low tail sets were another area of concern in some of the exhibits. Winners Dog My winners dog, from the Open class, was a mature, well balanced dog with a decent coat and correct head and eye. He had sound running gear and carried a good topline on the go-round. He was expertly presented and moved at the correct speed. Winners Bitch My winners bitch, from the 15-18 month class, was surprisingly mature and well-proportioned for her age. She possessed a nice head and an excellent coat. Again, I was impressed with how pulled together she was on the move, for a dog her age. Once again, her presentation was excellent. BOB/AOM My BOB dog and AOM dog were both outstanding representatives of the breed. Both possessed excellent coat and heads. Both carried excellent top lines when moving with proper reach and drive. Both were expertly presented. Both were in superb condition. Once could make a pretty good argument for placing them in either order. BOS/AOM My BOS Bitch was probably the prettiest dog I saw all day. Hopefully she produces as good as she is. Beautiful head and balance. Nice coat. Very sound. But the males presented a little better picture on the go round. The veteran bitch was also beautiful in her own right, in great shape not only for her age but for the fact that she had whelped a litter just a few months before the show (as I was later informed by her handler). Both exhibits were expertly presented. In conclusion, while entry numbers are small compared to many other breeds, the overall quality is excellent. Moreover your field dogs can compete in conformation and your show dogs can compete in the field, an achievement that few other breeds can still claim. I think German Wirehaired Pointers, as a breed, are in great shape looking towards the future. Thank you for the opportunity to judge your show. Elliot More, D.V.M.

I would like to thank the club for inviting me to judge Sweepstakes at your National Specialty. I loved my line-up of dogs and bitches and thank the membership for bringing your young dogs to me. These young dogs are the future of your breed and I look forward to seeing them all grown up. My puppy dog classes were nice and strong. My classes showed puppy boys with good bone, coat texture and balanced front and rear. I only had a few that were slightly too long in loin. The muscle tone in these boys was outstanding. It is so nice to see a sporting dog in field condition. I loved my puppy bitch classes, the overall type, coat texture and balance was very good. When I looked down the line-up in each class it came down to the overall picture and movement. My final lineup was just beautiful; I congratulate all the breeders and owners of these wonderful dogs.

Best in Sweepstakes: Ch Heywire ‘N Highfield’s Hey Look Me Over won my heart over. She is very balanced with good coat texture. Her neck flowed nicely into the shoulders with good depth of chest and good forechest. She has a nice bone, strong topline with short loin, balanced front and rear and a beautiful mover with good reach and drive. She fit the picture of an overall balanced dog and could work for hours in the field without tiring. Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes: Hawk Haven’s Grandstand is a nicely balanced dog with good coat texture and a neck that flowed nicely into the shoulders, good forechest and strong topline, and was slightly longer in the loin. He has good bone, and balanced front and rear with beautiful movement with good reach and drive. He was a little thin and later I found out he had just came back from his field training.

Veteran Sweepstakes What a pleasure to judge such beautiful veterans. I would have never guessed their age; they were all in field condition and moved like they were 2 years old.

Best Veteran in Sweepstakes: GCH Aspendel Pale Rider, JH is an

absolutely beautiful bitch. When you picked up her head, she said, “pick me” with her beautiful expression. She has a nice length of neck that fits into well laid-back shoulders. Good forechest and depth of chest. She is very balanced and moved effortlessly on her legs. . I would have never guessed she was 9 ½ years old. Well deserved the Best Veteran in Sweepstakes.

Best of Opposite Veteran in Sweepstakes: DC Schnellberg’s Freedom Rings, is a nicely balanced

dog, with a good length of neck that fit nicely into well laid-back shoulders with nice forechest. Good coat texture and nice topline and balanced front and rear. He was well muscled and used his legs well when going around the ring. A very nice veteran dog.

GWPCA Futurity Judges Comments Ms. Katrin Tazza I enjoyed judging the GWPC National Futurity. My decisions were based on how well the dog fit the standard in COAT, type, proportions and movement. Many of the exhibits had profuse incorrect coats, which would cause an issue in a hunting situation. There were many exhibits lacking length in the upper arm. The long upper arm with a properly laid back shoulder will enable the dog to run with a high head. The high head carriage will maximize the scenting ability. The proper front assembly will give the dog most of its power in the field. In the show ring this will give the dog the proper reach in front and will help with the movement coming and going. I also had a lot of dogs that were slab sided and had very little room for heart and lungs. Overall the dispositions were very nice. RIPSNORTERNCLADDAGH BACKFLD N MOTION JH, my Best in Futurity Bitch had an excellent hard coat which would protect her in any harsh situation. She was perfect coming and going and her legs converged in an upside down V with the rear legs landing perfectly behind the front. She was very sturdy and had a wonderful attitude. Both winners had great reach and drive. RIPSNORTERNCLADDAGH BRING’N SEXY BACK, the Best of Opposite Sex was a nice strong male with a great coat and attitude to match. The two final winners happened to be litter mates. I would have taken home either of them. The handlers of these dogs knew they had strong contenders, their dogs were in superb condition and properly presented by the owners. I spent a lot of time judging these dogs because I understand how important this win is to the breed. When I had a tough decision to make, my final determinant was could I hunt over this dog and would I use it in a breeding program. I will not fault a dog for being in field condition. The exhibitors were a pleasure to work with.

GWPCA Maturity Judges Comments Ms. Lisa Warren It was truly an honor to judge the Kick-Off Maturity at the 2011 National of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America. I was pleased with the dogs and I found my winners to be of notable quality. I also had the pleasure of watching the sweepstakes and the judging of the regular classes. I must observe that the number of excellent exhibits at this show was quite impressive. Any breed would be proud to have the depth of quality at its National that I saw in Michigan, and for this to be the case in a low-entry breed made it all the more remarkable. German Wirehaired Pointer breeders in America have every right to be very proud of their stewardship of this wonderful breed. My thanks to the club for inviting me to judge and my congratulations on a successful show. It was a privilege to be a part of it.

Ft. Detroit GWP Club Obedience OBEDIENCE COMPETITION JUDGE: Mr Delvyn R. Lunn Ft. Detroit German Wirehaired Pointer Club held its first all-breed obedience trial in conjunction with the GWPCA Nationals on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Ionia, MI. Del Lunn from Canada was our judge. There were 30 dogs entered. We awarded all-breed placements and GWP specialty placements. It was a fun afternoon. Everyone that showed really seemed to enjoy themselves. We had a variety of breeds represented. High In Trial and High Combined for the all-breed was won by an Irish Setter. All the dogs entered in Utility B qualified. I have been showing for several years and it is the first time that I have seen an Utility B class where every dog qualified. German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America National Agility Trial Agility COMPETITION JUDGE: Amanda Moller As host club, we decided to hold an All-Breed agility trial in conjunction with the 2011 Nationals. There are not that many Wires that do agility, but at least we were giving them a chance to do agility at the Nationals. The trail was 2 days 2 separate trials. Our Judge was Amanda Moller and the trial was held in the covered horse pavilion at the Ionia Fairgrounds. Saturday dawned sunny and very cool, but no rain was forecast. The trail was small, just a little over 100 runs but al there had a good time. Cool and crisp is perfect running weather for Wirehairs. Finally after many days of being crated, or shown in the conformation or obedience rings the wires got to show their stuff, and that they did! Many of those running chose to do Freestyle agility. Finally a dog in Novice class took the High In Trial award, it was CH Larkspur Intrepid Erebus UD JH, owner/handler Ann Kostishak.

Sunday also dawned cool, crisp and sunny. Again the courses were challenging but great for big dogs. High in Trial on Sunday came out of the Excellent Class, MACH vom Grafenaures’sFree Spirit VCD1 RA XF owner /handle Ashlee Trotter. We all had a great time, especially the dogs who got to show what great athletes they are and also they got another chance to humble us as their owner/handlers. AllStar Invitational By Judy Cheshire The ninth GWPCA All-Star Invitational brought nine entries to consider in 2011 at the Ionia Fairgrounds in Michigan. They consisted of three Dual Champions, five Champion/Master Hunters and one Canadian Champion /NAVHDA VC. The nine included a National Field Champion, a Best in Show winner, a Best in Specialty Show winner and several multiple group placing dogs. These dogs that have excelled in both conformation and field are the epitome of our standard and it’s exciting each year to see them be showcased and appreciated by the fancy. This “Invitational” event was never meant to be held on an annual basis. However, everyone continues to enjoy and look forward to it at every Nationals. The All-Star is a self-sustaining event and is not funded by the GWPCA, but by regional clubs and individuals who believe in the concept of the dual dog. This year the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Northern California gave a very generous donation, as did all the individuals who participated in both the raffle and silent auction to benefit the event. Our thanks to all! Special thanks to our “beverage coordinators”, Lisa and Steve Kreuser, we couldn’t have managed without them! Our panel of three judges this year included the following GWPCA members: Jim Boyd, who along with his lovely wife Michelle, has been involved with the breed of Dalmatians for over 20 years, breeding, owning and handling dogs to the Best In Show level. Their Wirehair experience began in 1996 with equal success, showing multiple champions including a Best in Show and National Specialty winner, Ch. Larkspur’s Celtic Sweet Sensation (aka “Snickers”). Jim enjoys hunting with his GWPs and participates regularly in both AKC

Hunt Tests and NAVHDA events; Tom Jarnich, who spent his leisure time hunting behind Shorthairs until Wirehairs caught his eye in the early 1990s. His first GWP arrived in September of 1994 and became CH/ AFC Walnuberg’s Upland Thunder MH (one score short of a CD, Tom likes to say!) – those of you who have been around the Nationals Obedience ring for a while may remember “Jake”, always wanting to “party” during the long sits and downs........and inviting all the other GWPs to do the same! “Jake” was also a top ten GWPCA Amateur Gun Dog in 1999 and 2001. Tom continues his involvement in the GWP community with CH Heywire ‘N Caramel Time Piece MH, NAVHDA UT and Heywire N CDRBRK Time N Time Again JH. Tom also judges AKC Hunt Tests and Field Trials; and last, but not least, Jodi Quesnell! Jodi started in purebred dogs by showing English Setters in Junior Showmanship and became involved with GWPs in 1999. She and her husband, Tom, showed and trialed the first BIS Dual Champion in the history of our breed, DC/AFC Jetset’s Ragtop Day at Scotia (aka “Cruiser”), who was also a former winner of the All-Star. Jodi currently has a very successful breeding program under the “Idawire” prefix. We certainly appreciated having such competent and accomplished judges! The winner of the 2011 GWPCA All-Star Invitational was Ch. RLB’s Got Moxie At Drakkar MH, bred by Roger and Lois Bultman and Terrence Boldin and owned by Ed Shupp. “Moxie” was beautifully presented that evening by Kelly Wisch. “Moxie” is currently one of the GWPCA top ten Amateur Gun Dogs and we’re hoping she’ll return to a subsequent Invitational with an AFC added to her name! Across The Pond – GWPCA Nationals vs. UK Championship Show By Alex Friar

Angie has asked me to write a little piece for this newsletter on our experience of coming out to the Nationals this year and the differences with the UK system. It was quite a ‘last minute’ decision for me this year in attending the GWPCA Nationals in Ionia – having only confirmed and booked my flight at the end of July! It is the second time I have had the pleasure of coming out to a Nationals – the first being some 9 or so years ago in Nebraska. As a few people reminded me whilst I was in Ionia – I was still a young one then! It is always exciting travelling out to another country to see our beloved breed, see what the dogs are like in conformation, temperament and ability and be able to see if there is anything that we like or can contribute to the dogs in the UK. Coming out to Ionia was no exception with a great excitement leading up to the journey over to the USA. We saw a good mix of dogs – with a number that I would have been happy to show in the UK. Your handling and the dogs’ showmanship continues to impress and I certainly picked up some tips to try back ‘across the pond’. It was a pleasure to be able to handle in the breed this year and to get firsthand experience of the USA system as an ‘exhibitor’. In many respects the Nationals and the USA system is very different from the UK. Firstly we have only one breed club and hold only one ‘championship specialty’ per year – in July. Our specialty is held on one day – with around 40-50 dogs entered. We have one judge presiding over all of our classes – however like in the USA the classes are split by sex. It generally costs around $30 to enter one dog at our specialty. Our classes generally consist per sex of 3 to 4 ‘age range’ classes (from 6mths to 24 mths) and then a further 3 classes that are distinguished by how ‘much’ a particular dog has won, we then have some classes for dogs who have particular working awards, a special beginners class and also our veteran classes. Any dog who has won more than a specified amount of classes at previous shows or who is already a ‘Champion’ has to compete in the open class. We have 2 Challenge Certificates to be awarded at our shows – like all of our championship shows. A Challenge Certificate will be awarded to the best dog and the best bitch. Reserve Challenge Certificates are also awarded to effectively the judges ‘second best dog and second best bitch’ at the show. A RCC is awarded, so that in the (unlikely) event that a dog is disqualified by the Kennel Club from their CC – the RCC winner will then be awarded the CC instead.

When a judge awards a Challenge Certificate (CC) they have to sign that certificate confirming that in their opinion the dog they have awarded it to is of sufficient quality to be awarded the title of Show Champion. The same statement is signed for the RCC winners – with the addition that they are of sufficient quality should the CC winner be disqualified. Both a CC and RCC winning dog receives a Stud Book number and automatically qualifies for Crufts for the lifetime of the dog. These ‘green cards’ are prized possessions for all owner/handlers. A dog who wins 3 Challenge Certificates, under 3 different judges – with at least 1 having been won when the dog is over 12 months old is entitled to the title of Show Champion. At our specialty show, all dogs who have won a first prize and are unbeaten by any other dog of their sex at the show can challenge for the CC – all dogs challenge together – therefore there is a very good chance that there will be a Champion in the lineup to challenge for a CC – and Champions are entitled to be awarded CCs – with no limit on the number of CCs they can win. Once the CC winners have been awarded, there are challenges for Best in Show, Reserve Best in Show, Best Opposite Sex in Show, Best Puppy in Show and Best Veteran in Show. Unfortunately our prizes are not quite as impressive as those of the Nationals – budgets are extremely limited and sponsorship usually runs to dog food but is very limited for other prizes. However our main winners all receive certificates, rosettes, keepsake trophies and perpetual trophies which are engraved with the dogs name and brought back the following year for the next winner. At our specialty show – all dogs can enter whether or not they have been docked, the show is a friendly affair and is often a not to be missed event in the GWP calendar! Like the Nationals, a Best in Show win at the UK GWPC Specialty is a treasured win and I can speak from experience – one that is not forgotten. The German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America hosted its 2011 National events at Ionia MI on October 3 – 8, 2011. The GWPCA combines all their performance and conformation events to run at the same general location which assured a good mix of the breed’s enthusiasts were on hand. The field events included the Open and Amateur Championships, a Puppy stake, a Derby stake, and a Futurity stake. Two Hunt Tests were also held to showcase the German Wirehaired Pointer.

FC/AFC Overbaron’s Chix Dig Me MH (Digger)

The star of the week was FC/AFC Overbaron’s Chix Dig Me MH (Digger), which won both the Open National Championship and the Amateur National Championship. Digger, owned and handled by Tony McGrane, ran forward, well purposed races in both stakes. He found game multiple times in each stake, displaying good style and excellent manners on each find. Judges for both stakes remarked on the quality of this fine animal.

Ionia Field Trial Area is one of the choice area hosting field trials in the country. It’s mix of tree lines, open fields, and good objectives make it a challenging course that provides many good opportunities to show dogs. The local clubs do extensive mowing and other improvements to maintain the area. Their efforts are to be complimented as the grounds looked better this year than this reporter has ever seen them. Good work! Judges for these events were all well respected and well experienced in the ways of class bird dogs. The Open Championship, the Futurity, and Puppy were judged by Jim Yates and Marc McKinley . The Amateur Championship was judged by Mark Johnson and Diane Vater. Mr.’s Johnson and Yates combined to judge the Derby. All the judges gave each dog the attention that stakes of this caliber deserve. Their decisions were well received. Major sponsors for these events were Purina and Tri-Tronics. Both of these companies produce top quality products that leading professional trainers and countless amateur trainers have relied on for years. Year after year dogs that have benefitted from the use of Pro Plan and Tri-Tronics remote trainers have risen to the top. Their support of our sport, both monetarily and by providing reliable, proven products is well appreciated. A nice feature of the GWPCA’s Nationals is the inclusion of a pair of Hunt Tests that showcases the breed’s hunting dogs. The first Hunt Test was run on Monday and the second on Tuesday. These tests were very well run. Test Chair Mark Sargent and Secretary Lori Sargent had assembled a first rate crew that had the tests running like clockwork. 25 dogs were entered on Monday with 24 starters, and 20 dogs were entered with 19 starters on Tuesday. The tests were run on the “orchard area” which provided a nice area to show the quality of these dogs. Qualifying dogs on Monday were Master Hunter, Kimmax Camus at Claddagh, owned by Courtney and William Bastian. 2 0 1 1 GW P C A N a t i o n a l C h a m p i o n s h i p The field trial kicked off on Monday with the Open Derby. The Derby Classic provided a number of very good performances. Brillow’s Big Wild Western (Wiley), handled by Jim West, was named the winner. Wiley displayed a very nice, forward race and also displayed the manners of an adult dog on his three finds. Uodibar’s Freebee was named second, also handled by Jim West and owned by John Rabidou. Third was Cascade Mercury Rising, handled by Jeff Calkins. Fourth was Dottie’s are Wild handled by Liz Barrett- Dixon. 18 dogs were entered in the Amateur Championship. Most dogs that ran were to find game multiple times, with a very high percentage of these finds without fault. Many fine performances were recorded, but the star of the show was FC/AFC Overbaron’s Chix Dig Me MH . Second place was awarded to NFC/DC/AFC Tumalo Joe owned and handled by John Williams. Third place was FC/AFC Wingfields High Cotton, owned and handled by Ben Coller. The white ribbon went to Penny Ljungren who owns and handled her young dog, CH Sure Shot’s Sonora Gone Heywire. The Field Furturity was the next stake on the slate. The judges gave the blue ribbon to Uodibar’s Freebee, who had also impressed in the Open Derby. Second place was Tumalo Heart for handler John Williams. Third place was awarded to the dog that had won the Derby, Brillow’s Big Wild Western. The judges gave the white ribbon to a nicely marked young dog Tumalo Teddy who was also handled by John Williams. This stake involves a call back to retrieve. A number of good dogs that had impressed the judges in the field were unable to complete the retrieve. This was a strong group of young dogs and the future is bright for these individuals. The Puppy stake was small, but very competitive. The winner was Whitetail’s Ice’s Lucky Lucy for handler Debby Darby. Geaux All in Schnellberg was second for Sue DeGraw, who also handled Geaux For Broke to the third place ribbon. Rounding out the placements was Whitetail’s Ivy League with Debby Darby on the whistle. The final stake to be run was the National Open Championship. As was mentioned earlier the winner was FC/AFC Overbaron’s Chix Dig Me MH. Digger did a good job of hunting the course and was shown on game multiple times. On each find he displayed the manners of a champion. Second place was Brillow’s Big Wild Western, for handler Jim West. Wiley was still a derby age dog but displays the mannerisms, both on the ground and on game of a much more experienced dog. Third place was awarded to Backwoods Drama Queen, expertly handled by Greg Dixon. Callie as she is called put down a nice gun dog race that took her to the likely cover while she maintained good contact with her handler. She also was shown on game multiple times and her style and manners were of championship quality. Rounding out this fine group of dogs was Sure Shot’s Pretty Please, handled by Jim West. This is a very nice young dog that showed a good hunting effort.

At 4:31 Left is found standing on the right side of the first big hayfield. Good style and manners. At 10:23 Parker is standing in the middle treeline of Hires field, good style and manners for him. Lefty continues to hunt all the edges and is rewarded at 13 with a find on the west side of Hires field. Bird flushed and all in order. At 21, Lefty has another find on the east corner of the hay field, all in order. Parker continues to hunt all of the lines. Both dogs fast and snappy. At 26, Parker has another find on the north/south line headed back to breakaway. Slight move to mark, and released himself before Ray got back. Both dogs continue on, Lefty carded a non-productive on the hill before the Boyscout bridge. At time, both dogs hunting hard and forward. Brace 3 – DC Schnellberg’s Freedom Reigns (Bronco) and Sure Shots Pretty Summer Endless Play (Player), handlers Sue DeGraw and Hilde Stapgens Brace 3 is the first brace on Tuesday morning; cool and a little fog. Bronco cards his first find at 5 minutes on the first edge on right after the breakaway. Bronco has another find at 7 on the middle line headed for Hires field. He has another find on the same treeline at the other end, all is still well. Player has a find at 10 in Hires field, the middle treeline. All in order. Player has another find at 14 on the same treeline. Steady to flush and shot. Bronco has another find at 20 on the hedge across from the barn. All in order. Player has an absence of 5 minutes and returns with a bird in her mouth, and she is up. Bronco continues his 45 minutes with lots of hustle at a medium gun dog range.

Brace 4 – Ch. Sure Shot’s Sonora Gone Heywire (Sonora) and FC/AFC Tumalo Timberjack, handlers Penny Ljungren and John Williams Find for Sonora at 7 minutes on the north/south line before Hires field. Good style and manners. Dogs are running the edges and head up the middle treeline in Hires field. Sonora cards a find at 9, with Jack backing. Both dogs looked great. Sonora takes the far edge of Hires field and is rewarded with a find at 14. After a lengthy search with great style throughout, Penny finds the sneaky quail. Jack has a find at 25 at the north end of the hay field past the machinery. Jack has continued on hunting the edges and is rewarded with a find at 34 on the north/south line before the turn towards the Boyscout bridge. Another find for Jack at 39 on the left past the Boyscout bridge. Good style and manners. Both dogs finish the 45 minutes strong.

Brace 5 – FC/AFC Overbaron’s Chix Dig Me, MH (Digger) and FC Wingfield’s High Cotton, JH, (Cotton); handlers Tony McGrane and Ben Coller Digger and Cotton both breakaway well and are gone. We catch up with both of them hunting in the fields before Hires field. Both dogs on point at 10 on middle line in Hires field. Good style and manners for both Digger and Cotton. Digger proceeds to rim the outside edge of Hires field. Coming thru the cut at 12, we find both Cotton and Digger on point on the far line, judges call a divided find. Ben locates the bird, flushes and shoots. All in order and both dogs looked good. Cotton has another find at 25 north of the machinery. In the meantime, Digger is running the entire edge of the whole field. Digger has a find at 29 on north/south line headed back to the breakaway. All in order for Digger. Digger proceeds to take the inside edge going down the hill towards the Boyscout bridge and disappears into the woods. He reappears at the bottom of the hill and hunts the entire edge of the big field. Tony and his boys take one for the team as he tries to catch up with Digger before the bridge. After the bridge and some water, Digger continues to take every edge until time is called. Cotton finishes strong and forward. Brace 6 – Sure Shot’s Pretty Please (Anabell) and NFC/DC/AFC Tumalo Joe (Joey), handlers Penny Ljungren and John Williams Annabell and Joey breakaway well and are gone. Both dogs running and hunting well, with Annabell pointed at 18 south of the machinery. All in order for Annabell. Find at 22 for Joey on the north/south line above the snowmobile trail. Another find for Joey at 32 straight across from the Boyscout bridge, with a step at the flush. Annabell is on point at the cut on the left at 34, bird produced and all in order. Find for Joey at 39. At 41, Annabell points in the same place, but no bird is produced. Both dogs fast and snappy thru the chute before the snowmobile bridge and finish the 45 minutes strong.

Brace 7 – NAFC/DC/AFC Ariel’s Justa Gotta Go Now (Louie) and Cascade Honest Abe (Abe), handlers Bernee Brawn and Ray Calkins Both dogs off well. Abe has find in the treeline just before Hires field at 7. Bird is up and manners are good. Louie making game up front, but doesn’t establish point. At 13, Abe has find at the end of the treeline in Hires field, but pushes birds. He is left down, but out of contention. Louie has a find at 15 in the little island in the middle of Hires field, bird is flushed and all in order. Tic and Tess breakaway well and we find Tic on point at 4 minutes on the east/west line at the top of the first hill. No bird is produced and she is sent on her way. Tess is found on point on the edge of the pond just beyond Tic. John finds a fresh hawk kill and takes Tess on. Tic has a find at the pond before Hires field, but no bird is produced. Tic has a 3rd non productive before Hires field, and handler opts to pick her up. Tess has a find at 13 just before Hires field. After a relocation, a bird is produced and all is in order. Tess has another find at 20 at the end of Hires field. Again birds are out and all in order. Tess finishes her 45 minutes forward as a medium gun dog. Brace 9 – Jed’s Blue Angel UD RAE (Jet) and Big Oak’s Black Magic Woman (Pepper), handlers Mike Braddock and Vern Grimslid Jet and Pepper breakaway well and are found hunting at the top of the hill past the apple orchard. Jet has an incident with a quail shortly after and is on a rope. Pepper hunts hard and has a find in Hires field and is on point again south of the machinery in the hay field. Great style and manners. After the flush, handler Vern opts to pick Pepper up and the Amateur championship is in the books for 2011.

Called back for retrieve were (in the order they ran): Lefty, Digger, Cotton and Joey. First alternate was Sonora and second was Bronco. Lefty broke at the shot and was not used. Sonora was then called back for a retrieve. All other dogs made a nice retrieve, and the Amateur Championship was over. ship

GWPCA National Hunt Test Qualifiers

Submitted by Lori by Lori Sargent, Hunt Test Secretary, Mark Sargent Hunt Test Chairman The National Hunt Tests of 2011 are now history. We started out slow in getting entries and I started to think the recession is going to affect our Nationals events. However, the last 2 weeks before the closing proved me wrong. We had a good entry and some great field work. There were 8 Master entrants both days, 6 Senior entrants on Monday and 5 on Tuesday and 11 Junior entrants on Monday and 9 on Tuesday. The test each day was started pretty near the published starting time. Blue skies and coolish weather in the morning was very welcome, especially after the downpours we had during the shows. We finished up around 3-4pm each afternoon. Plenty of daylight left. All in all great weather, but the most important factor is the committee and workers, who made sure this test, ran smoothly. However, the on-course (no bird field) tests proved to be tough for many players. The weather was a bit warm later in the day for the dogs running which caused some complications as well. Only one out of eight Master entrants qualified on Monday, none qualified on Tuesday. The Senior entrants had a tough time of it, none qualified either day. The Juniors were in good form, with almost all of them qualifying each day. Thank you to the judges, Walter Furesz, Bill Richardson, Janet Parker and Dan DeGraw. We couldn’t have had nicer, more easygoing people to work with than this group! The gunners were really put to the test with the on-course tests and should be thanked for their efforts. They included Richard Hirneisen, Bill Bastian, Rick Stover, and Randy Piette A special thank you for my excellent line marshall, Joan Payton. I couldn’t have done it without her help. Also to Marty Compton and Jehnet Carlson who helped wherever they could and Steve Hyer, who pitched in to help plant birds. Wired for Reading By Jodi Quesnell

With cold weather upon us, there is nothing better than sitting on the couch with a good book and a GWP or two or three or more… The first book I’m reviewing was recommended to me by a few other GWPCA members, and I have to say I enjoyed it as much as they said I would. The book is called “Racing in the Rain” written by Garth Stein. This book tells the life story of a dog, written from the dog’s point of view. “Enzo” is a mixed breed dog, owned by Denny, an upand-coming race car driver. Enzo watches TV, dreams of racing cars, and fights demon stuffed animals. Enzo is philosophical about his life as a dog, and accepts all of the changes in his life as Denny goes from being a single man to a family man. The story will capture your heart and I will admit I was in tears a few times. Thanks to the GWPCA members who recommended this book to me!

The second book was “Dog House: A Love Story—one love, 10 dogs, and a forty-two year marriage” by Carol Prisant. Any story including 10 dogs can’t be all bad, so I decided to give this book a try. Some of the 10 dogs were beloved, while some were not so beloved. Carol was the main character and her story spanned from her childhood, and her first attempts at having a dog, to her gradually increasing knowledge of dog behavior and her growing recognition of her shortcomings as a dog owner. Although she had failures as a dog owner, and admitted to mistakes in her marriage, her honest self-evaluations were a good view into the life of a pet owner.

Positive Outlook as NGWPR Enters Second Year By Diane Turner, National Rescue Coordinator

The GWPCA National Specialty Show and Field Trials provided a great start for National GWP Rescue’s second operating year. Thanks to the support of club members and exhibitors the rescue program can provide more foster homes, medical care and funding for GWPS in need. NGWPR Fund-raising Coordinator Patti Roberts organized all of NGWPR’s fund-raising efforts at the Nationals. A total of 48 items were donated by GWPCA members and friends for the silent auction and the bids offered for each item astonished all of the NGWPR volunteers. Patti also organized the raffle items—a lovely Coach purse donated by Ed and Nikki Schupp. The purse was definitely coveted by several fashion forward GWPCA members who visited the rescue table several times each day to admire and hold “the dream purse.” The other raffle item was a beautiful set of handcrafted Brazilian chef’’s knives donated by Victor Malzoni Jr. And then there was the historical Ugly Duck Print. Shocking all of us, it was no longer ugly but made beautiful by the efforts of Sue Mueller who matted and framed the old print in order to preserve it for future years. Culminating Sunday evening’s dinner, my husband Larry (who was an amazingly-good-sport all weekend) started the live auction of the old print. Tommy and Carol Cagle out bid other members and received the honor of placing their names on the back. Tommy was determined that he would be memorialized within the rescue program and it was fitting, as all too soon after our days together in Michigan, Tommy passed away. Tommy was always supportive of our breed and especially supportive of homeless and needy GWPs. For of all of us involved in the rescue program, Tommy’s presence and support will be sorely missed. Thanks to the efforts of Montana artist Joan Paredes and GWPCA Board Member Garnett Persinger NGWPR has lovely 2012 Calendars for sale. Each month features a NGWPR rescue dog rendered in a pastel drawing. Calendar and t-shirt sales were brisk during the weekend and can now be ordered by visiting the NGWPR website. Through the efforts of our NGWPR volunteers and the rescue program’s generous contributors nearly $3100 was earned during the National weekend. The NGWPR website features a rotating list of the 2011 Donors. Please plan to visit the site. The annual GWPCA/NGWPR Rescue Awards were announced at the awards banquet. The 2011 GWPCA/NGWPR Citizen’s Award went to Robyn Orloff of Carson City NV for her work with GWPs in rescue. For the past 12 years, Robyn has worked tirelessly to save GWPs found in Reno area shelters. At her own expense, Robyn often provides the necessary vet care to save a GWP. She places ads in the local papers then fields calls and works with prospective owners educating them about the breed. The dogs are then adopted through the local animal control facility. With Robyn’s involvement each GWP shelter dog is adopted into an appropriate and loving home. After the dog is adopted Robyn finds the time to be a constant resource for owners and their new GWP. The 2011 GWPCA/NGWPR Agency Award was won by Fremont Animal Hospital of Fremont, OH for their efforts in providing eight days of ICU care for a NGWPR rescue dog suffering from parvo. Doctors Alexander and Reineck allowed NGWPR to pay only for supplies— the vet techs and the doctors of the Fremont hospital donated their time and were dedicated to caring for the NGWPR dog. 70

RESCUE The 2011 GWPCA/NGWPR Member Award went to Adam and Amy Cunningham of Parker, CO for their continued support of the rescue program. At the time of the specialty Adam and Amy were caring for their 11th foster dog during 2011. The Cunninghams also donated the funds for the new NGWPR website and Adam has learned to care for the site. GWPCA members and NGWPR volunteers are tremendously grateful to Adam and Amy. Saturday morning October 1st, NGWPR held its annual meeting at the Ionia Fairgrounds. Carol Calahan the interim treasurer provided a concise report highlighting the donations and the expenditures. She will provide a detailed report to anyone who requests it. It was obvious from Carol’s report that transportation and medical costs for our rescue dogs make up most of the outgoing funds. The interim board appointed the new slate of officers as prescribed by the IRS approved by-laws. Serving as members of the NGWPR board until October, 2014 are: President: Cindy Heiller, DVM of Santa Rosa, CA, Vice-President: Heidi Baumbarger of Waxhaw, NC, Secretary: Ann Duffin of Bend, OR Treasurer: Amy Cunningham of Parker, CO Director: Debbie Darby of Walhalla, SC Copies of the complete minutes of the NGWPR annual meeting are available by contacting Ann Duffin, NGWPR Secretary. A packet explaining NGWPR philosophy, policy and protocol was prepared and was given to each GWPCA member attending the annual meeting. The new NGWPR microchip program is also described. The packet is available to anyone who missed the meeting by contacting NGWPR National Coordinator Diane Turner. Statistics for the rescue program were offered. From September 2010 – September 15, 2011 25 NGWPR dogs were placed in permanent homes 16 rescue dogs in the care of government agencies were placed through the efforts of NGWPR volunteers – either through the NGWPR website, volunteers who spent time at the animal control facilities working with the dogs and answering questions from potential adopters. 8 dogs in the care of other rescues were also placed through the help of NGWPR. As of Oct 1, 2011 there were 8 NGWPR dogs in foster care –two that were in Ionia being transferred from one foster to another. 1 NGWPR rescue dog was euthanized.

RESERVE BEST IN SHOW - Effective July 3, 2012 at DC Schnellberg’s Freedom Reigns, with the AllStar Judges shows where group classes are offered the club must also give a Reserve Best In Show, the winner to be chosen by the Best In Show judge from among the remaining group class winners after Best In Show. This award does not count towards All Breed Points. REALINGNMENT OF POINT SCHEDULE DIVISIONS – Effective May 2012, several of the point schedule divisions were realigned to minimize the difference in average entries among the states in the current divisions. Please go to the AKC website to verify your division and point schedule. GWP FIELD TRIAL WATER TEST REQUIREMENTS – Effective December 1, 2011 a pass by a GWP in a GWP Pointing breed water test will count toward both the FC and AFC regardless whether a professional or amateur handles the dog. MOTORIZED VEHICLES AT HUNTING EVENTS – Effective January 1, 2012, judge may ride 4-wheelers/ATV’s at the discretion of the host club. If the judges will be using 4-wheelers/ATV’s it must be clearly stated in the event premium. The vehicle must be turned off while a judge observes the dog’s bird work. If one judge uses a 4-wheeler/ ATV the other judge must as well. ADVANCED HUNT TESTS – Effective February 1, 2012, there are three new Pointing Breed Hunting Test titles, Junior Hunter Advanced (JHA), Senior Hunter Advanced (SHA) and Master Hunter Advanced (MHA). A pointing breed hunt test advanced title is awarded when a dog passes five additional times with an average qualifying score of 8.0 or higher, after earning its initial title in a test level. Upon completion of these requirements the owner of the dog must complete the Advanced Title tracking form and submit to the Performance Department. A certificate will not be issued unless ordered by the owner. For GWP’s to earn a MH title they must pass a water test. Another water test is not needed for a MHA title. RALLY REGULATION CHANGES – Effective April 1, 2012 major changes are being made to the sport of Rally, please go to the AKC website (www.AKC.org) to review all the changes.

Only the Good Die Young...Again By Robin K. Nelson, DVM

Do the words bloat, torsion, or gastric dilatation-volvulus, bring a picture to mind? Do you have a plan if your dog becomes anxious, refuses to eat, salivates for no apparent reason, or retches without vomiting? Gastric dilatationvolvulus (GDV) is the number-one cause of death for several large and giant breeds. If this painful disorder is not treated within hours, it becomes life-threatening and often fatal. Two young German Wirehaired Pointers, in the prime of their hunting lives, have bloated and died this fall. CLINICAL SIGNS: Twenty-five percent of bloat cases are caused by gastric dilatation. The stomach fills with food, fluid, or air causing intra abdominal changes that prevent belching or vomiting. Most cases are due to gastric volvulus where the stomach actually twists around the longitudinal axis of the digestive tract crimping and cutting off the inflow and outflow from the stomach. When the stomach gases are trapped, they expand and the abdomen becomes visibly distended. Affected dogs drool saliva because they cannot swallow, belch, or vomit which would relieve the mounting pressure in the stomach. The stomach balloons against the diaphragm preventing normal breathing and presses on major blood vessels sending the dog into shock. Unfortunately, early symptoms of bloat or GDV are not necessarily distinguishable from other kinds of distress. A dog might stand uncomfortably for no apparent reason. You may see firm distension of the abdomen, unexplained weakness, depression, difficulty breathing, hypersalivation or unproductive vomiting and retching. Watch Bloating Akita at www.youtube.com. This graphic video of an older Akita suffering from bloat will help you recognize symptoms in your own dogs. TREATMENT: Bloat is an EMERGENCY medical condition. Seek immediate help if you even suspect it. A percentage of dogs that develop bloat die, or have to be euthanized. This can be due to shock, fatal irregular heartbeats, or to rupture or death of the stomach wall. The odds of recovery from GDV are highest if derotating the stomach and tacking it to the body wall are done within the first few hours. Emergency treatment begins with relieving the gas pressure in the stomach. Sometimes this can be accomplished by passing a stomach tube, but if the tube cannot be passed due to torsion, the use of a large gage needle through the right side of the abdomen relieves the pressure. When the stomach remains twisted, emergency surgery is required and can include removal of a damaged spleen or a portion of devitalized stomach wall. Once normal anatomy is reestablished, the most important aspect of bloat surgery is gastropexy or tacking the stomach wall to the body wall which prevents it from twisting again. Studies have

shown that 76% of dogs that do not have a gastropexy will bloat again. In high risk breeds, many experts recommend having a preventive gastropexy performed instead of waiting for an episode of bloat. RISK FACTORS: The dogs with the greatest risk of developing bloat have chests that are deep and narrow. First degree relatives of dogs that have bloated have a 63% greater risk of developing bloat themselves. Lean dogs are at higher risk than overweight dogs. Dogs that eat quickly have a higher risk of bloating possibly due to increased swallowing of air. A study conducted at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine found that fearful, nervous or aggressive dogs have a much higher incidence of bloat. Stress can be a precipitating factor. Many dogs bloat after recent kenneling or after a long car ride. A higher percentage of males than females develop bloat and risk increases with age. Several dietrelated factors are associated with a higher incidence of bloat. These include feeding only dry kibble, or feeding a single large daily meal. Eating food consisting of particles less than 30 mm in size may also increase the risk of bloat. Dogs fed dry foods containing animal fat among the first four ingredients had a 170% higher risk for developing bloat. One study looking at the ingredients of dry dog food found that while neither grains, soy, nor animal proteins increased the risk of bloat, foods containing an increased amount of added oils or fats do increase the risk, possibly due to delayed emptying of the stomach. During the past 30 years there has been a 1500% increase in the incidence of bloat, and this has coincided with the increased feeding of dry dog foods. ÂŠ2011 GWPCA WIRE NEWS

G W P H E A LT H Feeding one large meal a day can weigh down the stomach and stretch the ligament which usually maintains the stomach’s normal position in the abdomen. Dogs that have bloated were found to have a much longer hepatogastric ligament, thought to be due to chronic stretching, which might also explain why bloat increases with age. There is no single, major gene that controls bloat. Dogs do not inherit bloat, but they do inherit a predisposition for the condition. Be extremely vigilant if your dog’s parent or sibling has bloated. PREVENTION: Many studies have researched how to prevent bloat and not everyone agrees. Classically, dogs presenting with bloat have eaten a large meal and exercised heavily shortly thereafter. Exercise has NOT been confirmed as a risk factor for developing bloat. One traditional preventative has been to raise the height of food and water bowls, but this was found to actually INCREASE the risk of bloat by 110%. DO NOT elevate food and water bowls. Try a Brake-Fast bowl if your dog eats too fast. Don’t feed tiny kibble or dry food containing oil or fat in the first four ingredients. Limit large volumes of water. Avoid or minimize stress as much as possible. Sadly, some dogs bloat despite our best efforts at prevention. If you notice your dog “isn’t quite right,” or doesn’t want to Nell, Owned by Donald Padgett died of Bloat last month eat, return to the kennel a short time later for a second look. If your dog gets you up during the night and wants outside or acts anxious, investigate to confirm your GWP isn’t in trouble. If you even suspect bloat, take your dog to a veterinarian, an emergency clinic, if available. Emergency practices often have the most experience handling GDV cases as they tend to occur in the evening or during the night.
