On the Cover - “Windy” “Windy”, DC/AFC Sure Shot’s Wide Open Spaces, was named for the grounds she ran on - the wide open spaces of the high desert in Washington and Oregon. Bred by Penny Ljungren and owned by Judy Cheshire and Doug Ljungren, Windy was the first joint venture that Doug and I shared. Doug trained her and ran her……. I spoiled her and showed her. A group placing Dual Champion…… what more could we have asked for? Thank you for sharing your life with us and for your gift of “Sonora”. Happy Hunting, Windy girl, you’ll always be in our hearts.

Pr e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e The 2011 Nationals are in the books. I’d like to congratulate the Fort Detroit Club for the excellent job hosting the GWPCA National Events. We now look forward to the 2012 Nationals in California. Start making plans for Oct 4-16. Additionally 2012 in Nebraska is well along in the process and it is time to plan for 2014! Volunteers are the backbone of the GWPCA. Without talented, dedicated volunteers there would be no Nationals, no newsletter and no statistics on show or field activities. Angie Johnson has agreed to produce the newsletter for 2012, but we will need a permanent editor starting next year. The wire news has evolved since 1959 from a few mimeographed pages to a quality publication. We need your help to continue. Also, the last “yearbook” was published in 2008. Who is ready to step forward? Get involved—

V O L U N T E E R !!!!!

Summer will offer many opportunities to get out with your special GWP. Whether it’s organized dog stuff or just family fun (swimming, camping or just hanging out)-- ENJOY and plan a trip to California in October!!

Fr o m T h e E d i t o r Well I had so much fun doing the National issue of the Wire~News I offered to stay on through 2012 as your Wire~News editor, but this year will pass by very quickly, so now is the time to volunteer as the Wire~News editor. This will give you the opportunity to get a few issues under your belt collaborating with an experienced Wire~News editor before venturing on your own. I will admit working on this magazine takes time but it is very rewarding and fun. If you are interested in being the Wire~News editor position contact me and we can discuss specifics This issue highlights the #1 GWP’s from 2011 and all the accomplishments these dogs and their owners have completed in 2011. This issue celebrates dogs and owners that participate in AKC Companion events such as agility, obedience, rally and tracking, and there are two nice articles on handling nerves in the ring and what it takes to reach the pinnacle of these sports (MACH & OTCH). Finally this issue is also our breeder/puppy issue, we discuss the ROM requirements and there is a nice article on evaluating puppies. It was a lot of fun collecting puppy pictures for this issue and thank you for everyone who submitted pictures. I wish I could print them all. Our next issue is the Field Dog issue so please get those field articles ready and send me lots of pictures. Remember the highest resolution possible is needed for printing. Email information to Angiehef@aol.com Warmest Regards,

Angie Johnson 8

AKC Delegate’s Report By Pat Laurans

The March Delegates meeting held in Newark, NJ began Sunday evening with a Coordinating Committee (all committee chairs) meeting and was followed by 4 of us meeting with 2 AKC Board members and AKC President and CEO Dennis Spring. Monday morning 7 of us met again and then I chaired the 3 hour Delegates Parent Club Committee meeting. After lunch I attended the All Breed Committee meeting, the By Laws Committee meeting and the Delegates Caucus. These ended in time for me to get to my 5:00 PM Coordinating Committee meeting. It was a long day --- and much was learned and accomplished. Tuesday morning at the Delegates meeting many reports were given and a tribute presentation saluted Walter Goodman (AKC Director), Tom Davis (AKC Board Vice Chair) and Ron Menaker (AKC Board Chairman) who are leaving the board because of term limits. Three new directors were elected. They are: Patricia Cruz, William Feeney and Thomas Powers. They will each serve for four years. There was a vote that would have changed the present seven groups to eleven groups (Group Realignment) by splitting the Sporting, Hound and Working Groups. More than half were in favor of the proposal, but since all rule and by-law changes need a 2/3rds vote,

it did not pass. Because the explanation of the 3 point major reserve proposal had been printed incorrectly in the AKC minutes it was withdrawn temporarily. It has been resubmitted and will be read at the June meeting in Raleigh and voted on at the September meeting.

In September the meeting will be in New Jersey and in December the meeting will be the Thursday and Friday before the AKC/Eukanuba Shows which will be in Orlando. I hope our “Meet the Breeds” booth will be as great this year as it was this past year. Our Florida members were fabulous!!

What Do Those Advanced Titles Mean? By Kay Braddock

Dogs can continue to compete in obedience and agility for advanced titles after they get their Utility Dog title in obedience or Excellent Agility and Excellent Agility Jumper titles. Some of us love competing in obedience and/or agility and do not want to stop after achieving the standard titles. For those that wish to continue there are advanced titles that can be earned. In Obedience there is the UDX title and the coveted OTCH title. The UDX (Utility Dog Excellent) is a non-competitive title. You earn a UDX leg by qualifying in Utility and Open at the same trial. Ten UDX legs are required to earn a UDX. According to my count, there have been 8 GWP’s that have earned a UDX title. The PHD of obedience is the OTCH (Obedience Trial Champion) title. The OTCH title is a competitive title. You earn OTCH points by placing in or winning Utility and Open classes. The difficulty of earning OTCH points varies somewhat by the area of the country where you compete. In many areas of the country, near perfect scores are required to get OTCH points. You also compete against dogs that already have an OTCH for the points. You must earn 100 points and have 3 first placements--1 in Utility, 1 in Open and a 3rd in either Utility or Open. The number of points awarded from placements depends on the number of dogs competing. Only one of the first placements can be earned at a breed specialty trial. Achieving an OTCH title is extraordinarily difficult. In 2010, AKC awarded just 88 OTCH titles among all breeds. GWP’s have had two dogs earn an OTCH--CH OTCH Nordics Viking BrandyUD MH and OTCH Fox Hills Mr Badger UDX JH OA NAJ. It has been about 20 years since GWP’s have had a dog earn an OTCH title. An OTCH goes in front of the dog’s name. A UDX goes after the dog’s name. You can earn multiple UDX titles and UDX will be followed by a number. The OTCH title is not followed by a number. Agility advanced titles are the MX (Master Agility), MXJ (Master Agility Jumper) and the MACH. A MX requires 10 qualifying scores after earning an Excellent Agility title. A MXJ (Master Agility Jumper) requires 10 qualifying scores. The top agility title is the MACH (Master Agility Champion) title. The MACH is not a competitive title in that you do not need to defeat any dogs in order to earn it. It is a very challenging title, however. In 2010, AKC awarded 1891 MACH titles (including multiple MACH titles) among all breeds. You must qualify in both the Excellent Standard class and

Excellent Jumper class at the same trial a total of 20 times. You must also earn 750 MACH points. A MACH point is awarded for each second that the dog completes the course under course time. Course time is determined by yardage. There have been two GWP’s awarded a MACH title--MACH Aspendel’s Seminole Wind and MACH Vom Grafenauer’s Free Spirit VCD1 RA XF JH CGC V A MACH title goes in front of the dog’s name and is followed by a number for each time the MACH requirements have been met. MX and MXJ go after the dog’s name. I’ve explained the AKC requirements for these titles. The AKC requirements do not begin to address the time, effort and expense of obtaining these elite titles. These titles requires many, many miles traveled, many, many weekends spent competing and a major expense in entry fees, gas and hotel costs. It involves a dedication to training and a true partnership with the dog. ©2012 GWPCA WIRE NEWS

Ring Nerves? By Kay Braddock

Conversations about “being nervous” are common between individuals who show their dogs in different sports. From conformation to obedience to hunt tests, many people seem more confident in their dogs than in themselves. Fortunately, there are ways to help us calm down that can be learned. People believe that some people are calm and some are nervous when they show, and that there is nothing we can do to change how we are “wired”. However, through research, both laboratory based and applied, we now know that calmness and reducing anxiety can be learned. This is a learned skill. Think about your dogs. We can say that German Wirehaired Pointers have an innate ability to point. But even though they can point, you still have to train them so they know what to do in the field. In obedience, you teach the dog heel position. Reducing anxiety is no different. One more example: I have yet to meet someone who knew how to show a dog in conformation because of good genetics. The person learned how to hold the leash and how to find a pace that would allow the dog’s standard to be clear to the judge. Therefore, we are going to look at anxiety reduction as a skill to be learned.

The first step is to look at what competition is and how we react. It is impossible for me to go through every aspect of conquering ring nerves, but by knowing what causes you to react, you will be able to work on the nerves. I will use an obedience trial as the example. The obedience trial that you are entered in and about to drive to is the objective competitive situation (OCS). There are no emotions attached to the OCS. It is simply the event. For example, last week many people were at an obedience trial in Toledo. What gets us in trouble is the subjective competitive situation (SCS). This is where we start to think about the event. Does this sound familiar? “I am showing in obedience tomorrow. Is my dog ready? Will she heel off leash? Why did I enter both days? What if she runs out of the ring? What if I trip while heeling? Why am I doing this?” At this point, our thoughts have moved us from looking at an event objectively to raising our emotions. This leads us to the next portion of the model: Response. In this example, my response is anxiety, which is a high level of stress that decreases performance. And last, the Consequences of the response can be considered the performance and how you think about obedience in the future. Am I so nervous that I NQ my dog? If so, I may not enjoy the sport if my nerves continue to change my performance. So what can we do? If you are someone who tends to think and think and think until you are stressed, practice changing your negative thoughts to positive thoughts. This takes time, but it does work. For example: Why am I running agility? I always forget the course. Change this to: With practice, I will be able to remember the course. And remember, no matter what, enjoy the dogs and have fun! Brenda is an associate professor at EMU and teaches sport management and sport psychology. She also gives seminars on the topic of stress reduction for dog sport handlers. She also shows her adorable sheltie in obedience.

AKC/EUKANUBA

AKC Invitational By Ashlee Trotter and Angie Johnson

Agility

Greetings from sunny Orlando, Florida! The AKC Agility Invitational was held Dec. 17-18, 2011. The event was held in the Orange County Convention Center, the field was made of sod trucked in from parts unknown. Overall the turf was a fine surface to run on, but it created quite a bit of work for the AKC staff to keep it in shape under the onslaught of fast moving, powerful paws. The weather was a comfortable 60-80 degrees with a nice compliment of sunshine, pretty nice for mid-December. We had 3 GWPs accept the invitation to compete: MACH Vom Grafenauer’s Free Spirit VCD1, RA, XF, JH, V, CGC aka, Spirit, Owned/ handled by Ashlee Trotter; Afterhour’s Frosted Mocha MX MXJ MXF, aka, Ashbee, Owned/handled by Diane Philibert; Afterhours Major’s Sunny Sky CD RAE AX MXJ XF, aka Spumoni, Owned/handled by Susan McKeever. Spumoni was coming off of a lower back injury and had a bit of a rough time keeping the bars up, but he and Sue ran steadily and exhibited great teamwork, both smiling after each run! Ashbee had two lovely clean runs, but unfortunately missed a jump in round 3 that caused her to receive 0 points for that round. Throughout the event she and Diane had fast, smooth runs, even finishing 7th in the first round. Spirit and I were just enough out of synch with each other to manage to avoid earning a clean round, but he was fast and his turns were tight, and of course we had a good time too. The invitational will be in Orlando again for each of the next 4 years. The qualification period for the 2012 event ends June 30, 2012, so there is still plenty of time to earn those MACH points and an invitation to join us next time! The following dogs earned an invitation to the 2011 AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando, FL this December. The top dogs were determined by the Top MACH Dog formula (Double Q’s x 10 + MACH points) that dogs have earned during the event qualifying period of July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. Example: Dog has 520 MACH points and nine Double Q’s, therefore, (9 x 10 = 90) + 520, so their total “formula value” will be 610. If any of these dogs decline the invitation, AKC will invite the next dog on the list. 1 MACH Vom Grafenauer’s Free Spirit VCD1 RA XF Owner: A. Trotter 2 Afterhour’s Frosted Mocha MX MXJ MXF Owner: D. Philbert/M. Rosenblatt 3 CH Scotian The Man In Black JH MX MXJ MXF Owner: S&J Rainwater/L. Is Your Puppy A S.T.A.R.? By Debra Galan-Parsons

The letters S.T.A.R. stand for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility. These things have likely been started long before you obtained your puppy (hopefully), and it is now your job to continue them. The classes are given by AKC evaluators, open to puppies up to one year of age, and cover the basic skills that will bridge into more formal training as well as information on common puppy problems (housetraining, chewing, etc.) It is a great program, and if done correctly, can make a huge impact on your dog’s development.

S

Last summer I was able to raise an amazing litter of puppies. The amount of time planning for the litter and the amount of time spent with the wiry wonders (every possible minute of the 10 weeks they were with me!) were well worth it. The litter was everything I had dreamed and hoped for. Many thanks to those who were involved in making it all happen. The pups are nine months old as I write this and have adjusted to their new homes well. Although I miss them, I feel so fortunate to have developed a close relationship with their families, and even more fortunate that all of the pups who remained geographically close returned weekly for early training. What a pleasure to watch them develop, learn and become the dog their new owners had been hoped for! As an evaluator for the Canine Good Citizen program, I have earned the privilege to conduct S.T.A.R. Puppy classes. I thought this would be a good time to talk about the importance of puppy training and how the S.T.A.R. program might be of benefit to your pup.

ocialization began at birth. The pup has learned from its mother, from its littermates, and hopefully from its breeder and their surrounding family. If all of this has been done correctly in the first 8-12 weeks of life, your pup’s transition into your home should have gone relatively well. Enrolling your puppy in a STAR Pup class will ensure that the socialization progress will continue. He will learn to have fun in a different environment, explore different surfaces, experience new sounds, and accept strangers and other dogs, all in a positive manner.

T

raining in the early stages involves the use of luring, marking, and rewards. In other words, we lure the puppy into the desired position, we then mark the correct position (with voice or clicker), and then we reward them. Teaching the puppy in this manner

R

esponsibility. The S.T.A.R. Puppy program, as all AKC programs, advocates responsible pet ownership. I believe that if a person has registered for a class, that they are at least demonstrating that they are trying to be a responsible pet owner. By attending the classes, providing veterinary care, adequate diet, and meeting the mental and physical needs of the puppy, a new owner will be off to a great start with his/her new dog.

gives him time to problem solve, and builds confidence. The last thing you want for your puppy at this point of training is to physically force him into a sit or down position, because if you think about it, we don’t give the puppy a chance to learn this way. Furthermore, we greatly increase the likelihood of creating fear in the dog; this can never lead in a good direction! The S.T.A.R. program will cover many basic skills, such as: sit, down, walking on a loose lead, stay, and come when called, as well as the formation of the out command by teaching the puppy to readily switch one toy for another. It also gives the evaluators the opportunity to note any less desirable behaviors and help the owners make the necessary changes to avoid future problems.

A

ctivity is not only what we focus on in class. This is where we want to get the owner thinking! What your puppy does throughout the day truly affects his demeanor. Does he get adequate physical AND mental exercise? What does that entail? Physical activity is not just a romp in the yard; the pup needs walks and outings in varying environments. Mental exercise may not just be training time; it may be an interactive toy, working for a meal, or just a new experience! In my opinion, Activity is the most important part of the S.T.A.R. Puppy program. It is vital that your puppy be challenged mentally and physically, and as a good owner, it is your job to figure out what activities will best enrich your pup! (Those of you who have GWP’s certainly understand the importance of draining the brain! Especially if you value your personal belongings and don’t want them destroyed by a bored pup!)

In closing, what I love about the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is that it gives the evaluators the opportunity to educate new and even seasoned puppy owners. Most people who take the program are open and willing to learn, from the instructor and from each other, and it’s great to see the camaraderie form amongst the group! It is such a pleasure week to week to hear the owners discussing what they’ve accomplished with their puppies, and talking about new activities they have experienced. A puppy should never be taken lightly. They are time consuming little buggers that will challenge you and tire you. They will love you unconditionally, but you must invest the time, patience, and a little bit of humility to create the dog you desire. They are a direct reflection of who we are, I remind myself of this daily. I am thankful for the dogs I have in my life, as they are a constant reminder of honesty and sincerity, and I believe, that they are thankful for me too. Any puppy owner would benefit from taking an S.T.A.R. Puppy course. To find an evaluator near you contact the AKC@ www.akc.org

Re c o r d o f M e r i t ( R O M ) Pr o g r a m The Record of Merit (ROM) program was developed by the GWPCA to recognize contributions of dogs and bitches to the breed. The designations are Superior ROM, Supreme ROM and ROM. To be nominated for the RECORD OF MERIT (ROM) all dogs and bitches must be registered with AKC, and only AKC titles will be recognized. The progeny must reflect the versatility of the breed by acquiring titles from both field and bench. Points will be awarded for the various titles reflecting the degree of difficulty in attaining said title. It will be further noted that OFA Hip Certification will be required for ALL dogs or bitches whelped after January 1, 1995, including the nominee.

DOGS: 1)

The nominee must submit a list of at least 10 titled offspring having titles from both bench and field.

list of 10 or more, shall contain a minimum of 8 bench champions (CH), and 3 of the 10 must have field titles (FC,AFC,MH,SH,JH). OR 2) 3 of the 10 offspring must have field titles (FC,AFC,MH), and 3 of the 10 must have bench titles (CH,CD,OA). 1 of the 10 must be a bench champion (CH). AND 3)

The points must equal 50 or more for either option 1 or option 2.

BITCHES: 1)

The nominee must submit a list of at least 7 titled offspring having titles from both bench and field.

The list of 7 or more, shall contain a minimum of 4 bench champions (CH), and 2 of the 7 must have field titles (FC,AFC,MH,SH,JH). OR 2) 1 of the 7 offspring must have a field title (FC,AFC,MH), and 2 of 7 must have bench titles (CH,CD,OA). 1 of the 7 must be a bench champion (CH). AND 3)

The points must total 35 or more for either option 1 or option 2.

SUPERIOR ROM: A dog or bitch is eligible for a Superior ROM if in addition to the fundamental requirements of the ROM, if he or she has produced both field and show champions (FC,AFC,MH,CH) or a BIS. BIS: Verification for a Best In Show shall be a photo of the dog or bitch, winning the award, sent in either hard copy or digitally to the ROM Coordinator, with the nominee’s application.

SUPREME ROM: This title is reserved for those outstanding dogs or bitches that in addition to attaining their ROM, have also produced a Dual Champion (DC). Point Values: Please note that once an animal earns a greater title than the one he or she previously held (ie: from JH to SH or MH…SH to MH…JH to MH…or from CD to CDX , etc) AKC DOES NOT recognize the lesser title anymore: therefore an animal IS NOT “Champion Jolly Good Lad JH, SH” he becomes “Champion Jolly Good Lad SH.” And, since an animal can go straight to these more complex titles, without passing through the lesser titles, no points shall be given for these lesser titles, once the greater title is received. In other words, Champion Jolly Good Lad SH, in the example above, would only be awarded 5 points for the bench championship, and 5 points for the Senior Hunter…he would not be allowed to accrue the additional point for the prior Junior Hunter.

LIGHTS, CAMERA & ACTION

Lights, Camera and Action! By Joan Payton

Late one evening in December, I received a call asking if I had German Wirehaired Pointers and would I be interested in using one in a commercial for a new dog food by Blue Buffalo called Blue Freedom. Just email pictures and we will get back to you. Christmas and New Year’s came and went with no news. Oh well, no one uses a wire in their ads. Wrong, there’s an email, they want the Payton GWP! Good thing we’ve been training them all to jump over things on command.

On January17th, I and seven other owners and dogs met at Tejon Ranch in Central California. Our previous training day was just four of us and the animal wrangler. Expecting this again, I wore my favorite bang around dog training “Pedigree” sweatshirt. Of course not only is the director there but so is the son of the owner of Blue Buffalo! Luckily he was a nice guy with a sense of humor. He had on a new company sweatshirt and asked if I would wear it instead. Of course I would. (It’s a nice shirt too) The next day is filming. It dawns amazingly clear and warm for January in the mountains. After driving over 20 minutes into the ranch we arrive at base camp. Wow, how many people and trucks does it take to make a 30 second commercial?! There are EZ Ups with chairs 52

and monitors set up everywhere. We’ve all seen it on TV but it doesn’t compare to being there. The bathrooms were even nicer than a lot of houses I’ve been in! Then there are the food crafts. These people take care of you. All day you can grab a variety of snacks and sandwiches, all set out like a party. Then there was lunch, real table cloths surrounded by beautiful scenery. The food rivaled a 5 star restaurant. Two green salads and three main dishes both days. Filet of Sole & Penne Pasta to name a couple. Eight scenes were taped. Every scene took approximately 1-2 hrs. You do a lot of waiting while the director and advertising executives review the shot and save or erase it. Briar taped 3 scenes. The first was supposed to be running down rocks & jumping off about a 3 foot drop. Rob, the wrangler, and I agreed that we didn’t want to make that jump more than a couple times. After one jump they decided it wasn’t what they had envisioned so they decided to have her jump up. They loved it. One of the other handlers held Briar about 20 feet from the ledge. I had to climb on top keeping her attention. When action was called I had to hurry up the rock about 25 feet, backwards and call her. I set on my butt very gracefully so one of the crew spotted me and let me fall again.

LIGHTS, CAMERA & ACTION

The second scene, handlers took the dogs out through a field of big rocks and waited behind a boulder about 120 yards. On cue the owner called the dog. Sounds pretty simple right? Except the dog can barely hear you and they want them to run all out up the left side then at the last second you have to turn them to come across the camera at the right distance and angle. This is the Scene of Briar’s that made the commercial. They loved the ears. The third scene had the dogs jumping a log. This took a while as all three of the dogs would touch it with one paw. Briar and the GSD finally got the shot. It was an exciting three days for us. I had a ball! Briar was a big hit with the owner and ad executives. She was the dog they all loved on. I think she was a good ambassador for the breed.

We finally got a copy of the commercial. It was so exciting to see her on the screen. Hope we get to do it again someday! To View Briar’s Commercial go to www.bluebuffalo.com/tv-commercials and select Blue Freedom. Thank you, Jim West and Rhonda Haukoos of Wild West Kennels, for believing in Player’s potential, and for training and handling him to his Field Champion title. Also, a big thanks to breeders Serena and John allowing one of their precious pups to move all the way to Alaska.
