#1 CHECK THE WEATHER Now more than ever, it is vitally important to check the weather conditions before and while you are on the bank. For me, it completely dictates the way I fish, from tactics to baiting levels. Quite often in late September and early October, we experience huge low-pressure systems. These come with strong and warm winds, and I have found that being in the teeth of the wind is one of the best times to be on the bank. More often than not, fish will be feeding heavily in this weather, and I wouldn’t be afraid to fish over a good amount of bait. On the other scale, there are the occasional cold, clear days which are a result of a high-pressure system. I have found these conditions to be the trickiest in which to get a bite. The best tactic I could recommend in this instance is a Zig Rig. I always keep my Zig disc full of Zig Alignas, no matter where I go and what time of year it is. During high pressure, the fish sit high up in the water, and even at night, I normally leave all three rods on Zigs.

Tips for Autumn Tom Maker
#2 FISH IN THE DEEP If I’m fishing on the bottom, I always look for some sort of depth variation out in the lake. Where the bars and plateaus may have been great during the summer, I now look at the back or front of such features. It’s normally silty in the deep areas of the lake and this is exactly what I am looking for. I have had my best results when fishing on these types of spots and will continue to fish them. If the lake has an average depth of around 12ft and I find an area at 22ft, I wouldn’t get overly excited. It could be too deep for this time of year but might be a spot for the winter. I look at fishing in the 12ft spots off the back or in front of an 8ft bar, for example. These are the sort of spots which I feel produce the most bites at this time of year.
#3 ZIGS As I have already briefly mentioned, Zigs can be a superb way of getting bites at all times of the year. I keep my Zig disc fully loaded wherever I go, each with different hookbaits and varied depths. I get asked a lot about which depth to set the Zig at, and it really does depend on the lake you are fishing. I personally prefer them on deeper, clearer lakes and find them far more effective. If, for example, the depth is 12ft, I would cast a 9ft, 6ft and maybe a 3ft Zig out there to start with, and chop and change from that. Most bases are covered by doing this, and the same goes for fishing at night.
#4 BOILIES Carp love boilies, and at this time of year they are continuously building weight for the following spring. A good-quality boilie will catch you more and better fish. Pretty much all my big fish have fallen to boilies over the years, and I don’t think it will change this year. I have already noticed the effect they can have, and just by introducing them, the stamp of fish seems to get bigger. I am a huge fan of The Krill and will be taking it with me wherever I go this autumn. It absolutely stinks of fishy goodness and releases attraction all across the lakebed. This is absolutely perfect when fishing in the silt because it spreads around and clings to anything in its path.

I recently mapped out some good spots on Pond 3 which weren’t there the last time I fished it; small depressions of 6ins deep that had most certainly been made by the carp. I know this for a fact because one of the spots was from where I ended up landing three different fish, before the action dried up and the carp moved on to another area.

t’s been just over 9 years now since I first visited Rainbow Lake in southern France, and it’s
never lost any of its appeal or sense of adventure. For those unfamiliar with Rainbow, having to book your sessions and swim so far in advance (currently 2 years) is a bit odd. I couldn’t get my head around it at first. It seems like such a stab in the dark, but once you get into the groove, you can be far more calculated than you first think about timing your trips and selecting the right swims so far ahead of time. Long-range watercraft, if you like! Obviously, it’s a lot different from the type of watercraft which we would normally do. Just like on the majority of waters, the fishing at Rainbow can be a bit

I’ve got a picture somewhere, which shows my end tackle lying on the bottom, and the only thing you can see is the hookbait. Maybe the bulkier setup actually helps to target the bigger carp, in that the smaller fish may be a bit cuter and able to pick out the heavier gear to avoid, whereas the larger fish are a bit more bullish and aren’t as bothered by the intricacies of it all. Even so, I’ve always maintained that the bait is the number one weapon in an armoury. In my experience, if you use the
