he past few years have seen me back on my old stomping grounds of the RK Leisure’s Horton complex. I decided to focus solely on one lake for each different season of the year. For example, fish the Church Lake in the spring, the Island Lake in summer, and Kingsmead 1 in the autumn and winter. In fact, taking this approach led to one of my most memorable captures. A true winter 40 in the shape on Mr Pink at 46lb. It came just two days before Christmas and saw me achieve one of my carp angling targets and dreams of catching a winter 40, a fish I’d failed to catch on my first successful mission on that particular lake some years previous. In the interest of providing some equilibrium here, it hasn’t all been as easy as it sometimes sounds when condensed to the written word. My go on Horton Church lake was a disaster. That spring I went in with the ‘bait heavily with boilies’ approach, and two stockies wa s a l l I h a d t o show for my efforts! I was literally piling the bait in and it wasn’t until several big ones came out of areas I’d heavily baited (up to a week later) that I clicked
what was happening. I’d get back to the lake and never be able to get back in the area I’d baited so would bait another and this would just keep happening. Mind you, other anglers seemed to have some very good results out of swims that aren’t normally deemed spring hotspots. I really wasn’t enjoying it, I was used to being able to lay down a good spread of bait and draw the fish to me quite quickly, these Horton fish seemed to react quite differently. The lake was heavily-pressured and my love affair with the Church Lake had got off to a somewhat jittery start, although I did manage to salvage that year with some arm-aching Kingsmead 1 action.
My brother had caught several good fish from the Church Lake, in fact, he seemed to catch whenever he turned up. Along with his fishing buddy, Wagner, they actually made it look quite easy. Looking at their captures kept the fire burning and it was when I saw the results that Oli Davies had last year stalking on Church, that I decided I would give the lake some proper time. The carp were both too big and/ or too good looking to ignore, and I set about formulating a plan for the coming season. At the back of my mind I always had and maintained one key thought, be prepared to not fish the lake you were intending on fishing, but also go with the idea of focusing on one lake. It’s all about what is actually happening when I arrive. Thus, for the early part of the new season I decided to concentrate my efforts on the famous Horton Church Lake. I got off to a great start on my first session bagging and old original named Sid at 36lb, followed by a gorgeous, dark mirror at 33lb. The lake was quite busy but as I was able to get on the fish, I was quite happy. For me the approach had changed significantly. I was now looking to get on the fish and fish for them with small amounts of quality food, as opposed to the mass baiting I used to employ. As always, I never really use a marker float and haven’t quite got into the whole ‘how many wraps’ game. I simply cast out a 2oz lead, find a good spot, clip up and recast to the area. I allow 2ft per second so a 6-second drop works out at around 12ft deep. A few boilies sprayed around

F EA T UR E join the complex and when I received a message from the owner telling me I had been successful I was absolutely buzzing! The distance between my two tickets was just six miles so the original plan was to primarily fish the smaller water and then drop back onto the Big Pit for a night or two if it got too busy. As with all best laid plans though, this didn’t turn out to be the case! My first planned session on the small lake was due to start on a Saturday afternoon. The night before I struggled to sleep; all the kit was sorted and I was excited to get started. When I woke up on the next morning, fate was to play its hand as I looked at my phone to reveal a text from a mate fishing the small lake. With the weather scorching hot I expected the worst news and that’s what it was, the ABOVE: The Brown Fish from last time around. RIGHT: The old man loved his present. BELOW: It was good to be back.
fter a thoroughly enjoyable season on Northey Park where I was lucky enough to tick off all but one of my targets, I decided that it was time to move on again. I had already acquired a ticket for a smaller water close by but knowing that this would probably be busy at times (to a point where a swim may not even be available!) I knew I needed to look at other venues in the area as backup. I had fished another complex a short distance away from my newly-acquired ticket until four years ago and had enjoyed the three years I spent there immensely; taking what was probably the most desirable fish from each lake including what many people deem the king of the complex – The Brown Fish from the Big Pit. It was with that capture that I knew my time was up and I left on a high note. However, I knew that when I pulled off there were still a fair few fish left for me to go back for, especially those which
resided in the Big Pit. Over my time away I had kept a watchful eye over the complex and, through good friends, was informed that the fish were coming on leaps and bounds. There were now six fish that I had not caught that had pushed through and were in excess of 40lb. Keen to return, I was lucky enough for my mate, Matt from Northey, to put me forward to re-
fish had started spawning in the night! I cursed my luck for a few minutes but then I realised it wasn’t the end of the world and I still had my ticket on the other complex so quickly changed my plans. It was my Dad’s 70th Birthday present that day which was a ride in an old mosquito plane. This took place in Northants, near Sywell reservoir, so from there I drove across the Nene Valley to my intended destination – the Big Pit. With the weather so hot I had an inkling as to where some fish would be from previous form and upon arriving at a viewing point it seemed I was correct as there was plenty of fish milling around. It turned out that the vast majority of these were the stock fish that were put in the lake the year I’d dropped off, which range from 12-20lb, although there were definitely some better fish amongst them too. It seemed like they were grouping up ready to get their yearly deed done. I quickly parked my car in the swim that controlled that corner and went about finding spots just out of the bay in hope that that’s where I would pick them up

I
t’s that time of year again and you will either be reaping the benefits of your hard work over the past month or looking forward to a new venue for winter. Personally, I like to hang on as long as possible to my main venue as this time of year can be so rewarding, particularly if the weather is mild or wet and windy with plenty of lovely low-pressure systems. As I generally fish on large gravel pits the topography of the lakebed is very important, and summer spots will probably vary greatly from autumn spots and definitely from winter areas. Whereas the bar tops, plateaus and shallow bays are
year was on the 22nd September. By then I like to have nailed down a couple of areas where I think that the carp will feed comfortably for an extended period. The bait itself also changes in autumn and I tend to drop a lot of the particles I have used throughout July and August and concentrate mainly on a good-quality boilie with the occasional addition of a bit of hemp, just to ‘seed’ the area and keep them grubbing about. Although big-pit fish are generally nomadic and tend to do exactly what they please, often dependent on what is naturally available and where, they can
the top areas during the warmer weather, the fish always seem to migrate to more open areas in autumn, particularly large, flat and silty spots at range. I am convinced that they have a built-in ‘harvest’ indicator and go where the food is most abundant and the conditions on the bottom are more favourable, whether that be depth, temperature or oxygen, I have no idea, but they usually show well at this time and the spots are not hard to locate. The larger the area, as opposed to small bars and humps, the easier they become to bait, and more fish can congregate at once, leading to the perfect fishing scenario. For me the whole baiting thing starts around the autumn equinox, which this
also be persuaded to change these habits with a decent baiting strategy. I always maintain that is nothing as effective for catching carp as ‘free bait’ and I don’t mean the price you pay either. Free bait is bait that has been fed to the fish without any lines in the water or traps being set, pre-baiting or, as it more often turns out, baiting before leaving the lake and using plenty of it as well. If it is ever possible (often the distance prevents this) I love to make trips to the lake in between sessions just to top up my chosen areas and keep the fish visiting them on a regular basis. Once those carp have drifted off and found something else in a different section of the lake there is no guarantee they will

Destiny isn’t bound by the laws of probability. Robert Santelli. There wasn’t actually going to be a Part Two, until the events of mid-September demanded one. Big-water events are starting to beat me up now, and after the World Carp Classic in the Czech Republic in 2016, when I was
suffering a rare health setback, I felt enough was enough, and that it was time to retire from the WCC scene. Then the event returned to my favourite venue, Lac de Madine in eastern France for the 2017 event, and I had a change of heart, which was reflected in the introduction to my piece for the WCC 2017 magazine, in which I wrote the following:
‘Then, when I sat down to write this, it occurred to me that next year is 2018, the 20th anniversary of the first WCC, also held at Madine, which means I’ll have to give it one more shot. Partner Jacko is definitely up for that. Ever the eternal optimist (I’m more of a realist where Madine is concerned), he’s emphasised that we will win it this year, and return to defend our title in 2018.’ Yours truly writing in the 2017 WCC magazine, published prior to the event. It demonstrates that Jacko can not only catch carp, but is clairvoyant, too! In fact there was more to it than the WCC anniversary. September 2018 will, of course, be almost one hundred years on from the end of the First World War, give or take a few weeks. The Butte de Montsec, which overlooks Lac de Madine, commemorates the SaintMihiel salient, one of the last significant battles of that dreadful war, as does the

It was the significance of these two very different anniversaries that strengthened my weakening resolve and influenced my decision to go back to Madine for one, maybe two, final times. I may be ‘good for my age’, but the logistics of these big-water events are extending me. Good for my age isn’t enough. If I can’t compete against the others on a level playing field then I shall retire from the fray. In fact the outcome of this year’s events very much reflected the theme of last month’s reflective piece; ‘I get by with a lot of help from my friends’. Your short-term fate is decided by the draw in all matches, especially on the big inland seas where an unfavourable draw

Over the years Jacko and I have gradually got slightly better at draws when we have been fishing together, but at Madine we have never felt we have been in with a realistic chance of winning the event. You have two draws at Madine, one at registration to determine the order in which the actual draw will take place, and then the actual peg draw at the opening ceremony. I drew the ‘order’ number, which was 82, meaning 81 pegs would have been drawn (out of about 100) by the time we drew. I’ve come to dread those World Carp Classic draws. You sit with the map in front of you ticking off the pegs as the draw is made, and just hope that there is something meaningful left when it comes to your turn, and that you draw it! In fact this time around the early stages of the draw were fairly promising, with many of the ‘Oh no…’ pegs having been drawn by the time our turn came round. On past performance I didn’t trust Jacko, or me, with the actual peg draw and left it to ‘third angler’ Benji, Jacko’s Austrian friend. He drew 76, which didn’t register for a few moments, but when it did it could only be construed as good news. It was
on the main island, which meant going through the upheaval of relocating your worldly goods and temporary homes by boat, but it was in an area of water that had produced two previous winners, our friends Rob Tough and Tom DuncanDunlop in 2009, and George Csonka and John Roberts in 2010. There hadn’t been an English winning pair since 2010. This was the ninth time Jacko and I have fished Madine, and the eighth time we have had to relocate by boat. The fact

The WCC event has developed from a singles event of two nights in 1998, through to a pairs’ event the following year, through to the current format of a five-night pairs’ event, with a ‘third angler’ and/or helper permitted. The third angler doesn’t actually fish, but can help with the use of the boat, and can attend to the rods, if needed. The third angler being permitted to go out in the boat with one of the actual anglers is a significant and meaningful change to the rules, and was invaluable in the big winds of this year’s

When I posted the picture of us relocating from mainland to island on Facebook I think the scale of the event came as a shock to many people. The boat chain in the background is one team, headed for swim 65, a well fancied draw after it produced the winners last year. Our mountain of gear and bait is waiting to be loaded onto two boats, while in the background former winner Rob Tough is making his team’s preparations to relocate to a distant swim. On this occasion the boat trip out was a tad perilous, in the
