ivers are an ever-changing environment of moving waters.

They can range from dark and deep silent pools to raging white-waters, noisy in their race to reach the ocean.

The carp is the most adaptable and wide-ranging freshwater species on this planet, and rivers are their true home.

The strange thing is that very few carp anglers actually seriously target flowing waters. The number of anglers fishing lakes only far outnumbers those who fish rivers. Why is this? The main reason I think is because most carpers feel that lakes already have enough difficulties to overcome, without the need to add any complicated extra problems presented by rivers.

Recently, Mitchell Street, an experienced angler who often targets large public lakes, sent a personal message to my Facebook Page. In the message was an image of a beautiful 40lb common carp that he’d landed that day at Lac St Cassien. I wrote back, congratulating him on his capture, and mentioned that I’d also caught a 40lb mirror from a river that very same morning.

He replied... “Great to hear Tony! Wish I could get into a bit of river fishing, but I would get constantly upset at the drifting crap on the lines, Lol! I hope that you bag some more.”

I replied: “I don’t have any crap (drifting weed and flotsam etc.) drifting into lines and no problems with flow. I tend to not fish like most others do on rivers, so rarely encounter those headaches.”

To hopefully provide some incentive for other anglers to target river carp, I will share some of my knowledge gathered from over five decades of river carping.

To give an idea how I tackle some rivers, rather than just a bland ‘how to’ list, I will give a short account of some recent sessions at wild and stunning rivers in France during July 2017.

The sun shone from a cloudless sky as I drove across the hills of Correze on the western edges of the mountainous Massif Central region of France. Soon the road began to twist like a serpent in tight S bends that snaked almost vertically downwards into the valley of the Dordogne. The tyres of my Mercedes changed their tune as they rolled across the large metal bridge that spanned the sparkling waters of the river.

I pulled onto a dirt track and parked the car beneath the cooling shade of a large tree, then sat at the table and ordered a drink and something to eat. The ice-cold draught larger quenched my dry throat on

this scorching hot day. The air temperature was 36°C in the shade and a fire-hot 45°C in direct sunlight.

I laid out a Euro map of the region and began scanning the terrain for my next target. The blue lines wriggled across the map like veins on an old hand. I spotted the place near Montignac where I’d been fishing the previous night, with some success. Although not a monster, the single carp had put up a spirited fight in the flowing waters of the Vezere, a tributary of the Dordogne.

I was now at Le Baisson de Cedouit and tracked my finger east along the waving blue line towards Vitrac and Souilac. I already knew the route well and had found three stunning locations to fish the previous year that I named ‘The Cliffs’, ‘The Deeps’ and ‘The Orchard’.

With my stomach now filled and thirst quenched, I got back in the car and headed first for The Cliffs, and then The Deeps.

Both places looked good and with the river levels quite low The Deeps looked a better bet. Unfortunately, there was a spanner in the works. The midsummer heatwave had drawn thousands of holiday makers to the Dordogne Valley. Both sections of the river were crowded with tourists and the roads crammed with traffic. My third choice, The Orchard, was a far better prospect. It lay several kilometres down a dusty old track and still remained hidden from the main tourist trails.

I most often fish with four 3lb test rods on a pod, especially when I’m fishing large lakes, but I was only carrying two rods in the car because sometimes I prefer to target some very tight and snaggy swims, where too many lines can be a hassle at night.

A quick look at the weather forecast on my phone showed that it would be a dry night, so I did not set up the tent, and instead just slept under the stars. This allowed me to set up quickly and also pack up within minutes if I chose to move to another location.

The two rods that I had with me were 2lb 12oz test curve versions which are whipped with two extra Fuji 3-leg rings, eight in all, along the 12ft of carbon. This ‘old school’ way of building rods is my preference, and it also means that I can place the largest butt ring directly behind the alarm, to help prevent the rod from being wrenched forward during severe takes. The swim in front of me had a very hard bottom of pebbles and rocks, with no known snags, so I fitted spools filled with ultra-thin diameter Spiderwire Stealth 50lb braid.

inally, after what seemed like a lifetime I got the email I had been waiting for. I was being offered a ticket on the Wasing Estate’s Cranwells Lake, and the chance to fish for the current British record, the Parrot.

I had first seen a photo of this fish many years before while fishing on the Essex Manor and was absolutely blown away by it, deciding there and then that I would make it my mission to catch him.

Cranwells was stuffed with carp and has quite a large stock possibly up to around 170+ carp with lots of fish around the 20lb+ mark making it very hard to try and single out one particular fish. Not really what I’ve been used to when targeting large carp before, however I was relishing the challenge and to catch a few along the way would make the journey that much more exciting!

The ticket stated on the 1st August, however due to other commitments, mainly wanting to see out early Autumn on Burghfield, I decided that I wouldn’t start on there until November time. This year was to be nothing like the last with plenty of cold snaps and even a period where the lake froze over for a couple of weeks making the fishing harder and, to be honest, quite frustrating as I was still seeing plenty show but unable to get bites even with the large stock!

The winter passed by slowly but finally that time of year that every carp angler

looks forward to was starting to show signs; the birds were chirping and the first daffodils were starting to flower. With every day that passed the anticipation that spring was coming grew stronger.

It was also a year of new beginnings for me, over the winter period I decided that after spending many years fishing with Nashbait I would take on a fresh challenge and team up with two good mates Jon Mac and Sean Leverett of Proper Carp Baits. After receiving the grand tour of the factory and seeing for myself the quality of the ingredients being used in all of their baits, I was looking forward to getting involved. I instantly took a liking to their Black Seal range loving the old skool fishmeal, with garlic and blue cheese flavours, I just knew this had big fish written all over it!

Early March was soon upon us and the fish were now really starting to wake up, the bites were now coming thick and fast and it wasn’t uncommon to get multiple bites throughout my stay. Due to the nature of the lakebed on Cranwells, very shallow, weedy, and like an egg box, I had opted to use a bait boat. This obviously makes accurate bait placement far easier and also allowed me to fish closer to the islands where a lot of the fish seemed to be holding up. I kept my rigs simple opting to fish with my trusty 15lb GT80+ main line and mainly Hinged Stiff rigs with supple booms tied using Gardner Tackle

products, super sharp size 5 Covert Dark Chod hooks and 12mm pop-ups. I would vary the colours and flavours but found the yellow Pineapple & N-butyric Acid to be by far the most productive. For the first time in years I found myself having to pre-plan and actually have ready-tied rigs, ready to go due to the sheer number of bites I was getting! I was really starting to enjoy my fishing and getting amongst some of the better fish managing some real clonking scaly-backs and a few good 30lb+ carp along the way. With every bite my confidence in the bait was growing, surely the Parrot had come across one of my many piles of bait and liked it!

As with all new lakes you start to fish you very quickly realise which anglers are on it, and apart from the obvious like Mr Hearn and Steve Allcott, who thankfully were no longer a threat due to both having banked the Parrot early on in my campaign. There were a couple of others, a chap called John Cashy and Mr. Craig Runham, although we don’t want to make the latter’s head any bigger than it already is! They were both more than capable and, as likeminded anglers, friendships were quickly formed. It’s always nice when you’re targeting large carp to have one or two friends who you can share a few bits and pieces with (only a few!). Being the busy circuit water that Cranwells had obviously become, it was good to know when people were due to leave or move

Not all the carp are able to grow up to 20 or 30kg due to their DNA, so Saky decided to sell all the carp without the growth potential. He emptied the lake last autumn and removed all the carp which he believed had no potential, leaving just 210 fish. This makes it challenging for every angler who fishes there as they are very difficult to catch.

The lake ranges from 1.6 to 2.4m deep.

During the spring months the whole lake bottom is covered in weed, offering lots of natural food for the carp, and grows to the surface in the summer. Saky comes to the lake for a few hours every day to make sure everything is okay and that the anglers are treating the fish well. I was surprised to see him every day doing water tests to analyse specific values.

ack in April I went on a ten-day fishing session to Monster Carp Lake in Romania. I have fished there before and I can say it is by far the best lake in Romania and one of the best lakes in the world. When I was there last year I caught a 31.8kg carp and named him Dynamite. This year a Romanian angler caught him only a few days after I finished my session at the incredible weight of 34.6kg, the new Romanian common record.

Monster Carp Lake The lake is located close to the Hungarian border in a village called Siclau which is 50km north from the city of Arad surrounded by farm land. It is 6ha, roughly 15 acres, with three purposebuilt fishing positions, each of them suitable for two anglers fishing three rods each. You have to make reservations beforehand with the owner of the lake.

Wi-fi, electricity, fridge and drinking water is available directly in the swim so your comfort is well taken care of. You can use a boat or bait boat, and the rules are similar to other private lakes. There is an unhooking mat and weigh sling at the lake which helps save you some space when packing.

Security is really good as the lake is fully fenced and under video surveillance.

There is a bailiff on site at all times to take care of your comfort, security

Origin of the Lake The lake was purchased by the current owner Ioan Vida, Saky to his friends, seven years ago. His goal was to create a small lake with big fish that would be far from easy to catch. Considering he is one of the most renowned anglers in Romania, he had lots of experience and knowledge to start with and knew how to approach the challenge. He focused on breeding carp specially for the lake. Carp fishing has been well known for years in Romania, especially on Lake Raduta, but people still carp fish mostly for food. In 2010 when he bought the lake he put in 300 carp from 10 to 16kg with the

Despite the lake’s size, fishing here is a challenge. The carp are big and very careful. To prove the fishing is not easy my father and I set a new record two years ago when we fished the lake – we caught 26 carp in one week, up until then the record was 18 fish.

Conditions at the Lake For the past two years in spring the water was always very clear; it was possible to see the bottom everywhere on the lake except when it was very windy. The lake is positioned on flatland which makes it very exposed to wind. Weed has always covered most of the lake’s bottom, so clear water was crucial to help find holes in the weed. Holes in the weed mean the carp have been feeding there on the natural food which makes it an ideal place to put a bait. The holes at the lake

Burghfield It had been a terrible winter for many and I didn’t do too much fishing myself. I had everything saved in the locker for when it was time to get back down to Burghfield.

The spring was always a good time to catch fish from the lake and I had a bit of time booked off after The Big One show.

Once it was done, I was straight down to the lake and found myself setting up in the Compound swim. It gave me access to a big chunk of open water and is a known area for the fish to wake up in. I dropped the rods out around 120yds out at the bottom of the steep drop off. It went from 6ft down to 16ft and I knew that it was a good area for a bite.

I had a simple mix of Manilla and some nuts and didn’t go overboard with the bait, just a couple of handfuls over each rod was enough. I lost a couple of fish, but eventually landed one, which was a nice 24lb mirror. A couple of hours later and the other rod was away, this time with

something a lot heavier. After a bit of an epic scrap, I netted a chunky-looking mirror. She went a little over 42lb on the scales and everything was falling into place nicely.

Nothing happened until the following day. The morning was quiet and it wasn’t until around 1.00 p.m. when the moon was prime and due to shift, when the lefthander was away. I could tell it was a smaller one and eventually slipped the net under an old-looking common. I recognised it as a fish that I had seen swim with the big common a few times. My heart was now racing, I had one rod left on the spot and didn’t want to get the rod back out, I knew she could be out there.

I rang my mum and while I was on the phone, the other rod was away. I threw the phone on the bed and shouted to my mum to ring Baz and ask him to come around and give me a hand. This thing was ridiculous, stripping line off me with ease.
