The Great Crafty Carper Debate.
Iain Macmillan says: “You have to remember that back
Q
Tying a separate flexible Hair – old-school myth, or a valid technique in your armoury?”
in the day there simply wasn’t the technology, or know-how, or rig components that there is today, hence the original concept of the Hair Rig. The Hairs were made up from very nimble materials, such as cotton or dental floss. I for one think it’s a myth in modern carp circles because everything now is so much more user-friendly, and that’s why there was the massive boom in coated braids some years ago. Once peeled back, the coated braid is about as supple as you’re ever going to need to tie the Hair with, which again is why the good old Knotless Knot is still as popular today as when it was devised. People want ease of use, which is what modern-day materials are aimed at. I mean, who in their right mind can be bothered to sit there trying to tie a separate Hair with some fine cotton, when the Dyneema braids of today do it much, much better – and quicker! Yes, it was old school back in the day to use fine Hairs, but as underwater footage has shown, carp suck rigs in at such speed that for most of the time, I don’t think it matters one bit what the Hair is made from.”
This month’s experts are: Iain Macmillan, or Ting Tong, as he is also known, is a carp-catcher of the highest order. He tends to favour a couple of set tactics in which he has extreme confidence, and likes to spend his days on syndicate waters with monster carp, or on the banks of some of the busier commercials. Either way, he can’t half catch ’em!
40
James Conway is a consultant for Bait-Tech and has been carp fishing for over 20 years. He started off in the Lea Valley, and nowadays fishes a little further afield, targeting syndicate waters in the Colne Valley and Bedfordshire. He angles on limited time due to working fulltime and having a young family.
Julian Cundiff is well known to Crafty readers, thanks to his monthly diary. He’s an angler who never overcomplicates his rigs and he knows that some of the simplest rigs work better than the advanced ones. If it works, why change it?
Ian Russell is a carp-catching machine who has recently hit a vein of form with some big hits of very large fish, especially from RK Leisure’s Horton Complex, as he has absolutely taken Kingsmead 1 apart recently. Ian is at home on any type of lake though, and loves catching fish of any size, no matter how big or small.
Ellis Brazier can usually be found in the deepest parts of Shropshire, fishing silty meres in the search for big original commons, but he also likes to fish for runs on some of the more commercial waters in the area. He loves particles and he also likes the good old peanut.
Mitch Smith hails from Essex, and as well as being the UK manager for Starbaits, he also owns a few fisheries in the south. He’s a cracking bloke, and is equally at home using lots of boilies or a variety of particle baits when chasing carp, both in the UK and abroad, plus he can whack a lead some distance.

CUSTOM CARP PRODUCTS CONTACT: (Facebook) Custom Carp Products; (Email) customcarpproducts@hotmail.com Custom Carp Products is based in Derby, and was founded in 2013 with the aim of creating reliable, hard-wearing, uncomplicated luggage for the carp and specialist anglers. The company only uses the best fabrics available, some of which are actually used by the military, so you know it’s going to be good. All products are available in olive or the old-school DPM, and the flagship product is the awesome bedchair cover, which is both fully waterproof and well lined to ensure you stay warm on the bank. Jon will even make items specific to your design if requested. WHAT YOU’LL PAY: Everything seems pretty reasonably priced to say it’s made to order. For example, the fleece-lined bedchair cover is priced at £60, and the net float pictured is £10.
ARMY ANDY BIVVY REPAIRS CONTACT: armyandybivvyrepairs.co.uk Andy has been around the carp-angling scene for some time, but while in the army he completed a course on repairing everything from tents and rucksacks through to sleeping bags, and more. He has made loads of items to anglers’ own designs, including carpy dog jackets. The best-quality materials are used, but his forte is the quality of his bivvy repairs, ranging from tape seal, pegging point and zip repairs through to fitting windows and creating custom bags. A very popular item of his, which we see on the bank quite often, is the awesome Army Andy Unhooking Mat. It measures 4ft x 3ft and is 2ins thick, and features a retaining flap, a scales and weigh sling pouch, and a pouch for forceps and treatment liquid, plus it folds in half to fit nicely on the barrow. WHAT YOU’LL PAY: Bivvy repairs are quoted on request. The popular unhooking mat pictured is priced at £60.
HERITAGE LTD EDITION CONTACT: heritageltdedition.bigcartel.com These guys are all over social media, and you can easily find them and their carpy following on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Heritage Ltd Edition is located close to the Yateley Complex and specialises in British- made angling products, limited edition items, and custom one-offs. The guys at Heritage are all about where carp angling began in the UK and want to carry it on with their range of items, which seem to have been a huge hit already with people in the know. Every item they produce is available in olive, black and DPM Camo. In the picture you’ll see just a sample of what they have to offer, with the Reel Pouch, Landing Net Bag, Bits Bag and Skinny Tip Protector. They also do a great range of pouches for storing all your bits and bobs. WHAT YOU’LL PAY: All prices are available on the website. OUT NOW Every Bit of Blue
The debut book from Frank Warwick “Back in the early days of what has become the prolific carp scene of today, carp waters were few and far between, and ‘every bit of blue’ on the Ordnance Survey maps used to be explored to see if there were carp in that particular bit of blue. It was a time when a rig meant free-lining or ledgering, and baits were as big a mystery as the location of waters containing carp. Frank has lived through, and fished through, all those formative years, and has contributed handsomely to the development and refinement of carp-catching methods and baits. He’s enjoyed more than his share of success, home and abroad, along the way, and in this long overdue first book Frank relives some of the highlights of his 40+ years of carp fishing. It’s been an unmissable journey. for him.”
