With 11 starting points across England and Wales, there are dozens of routes and hundreds of destinations to choose from. In this brochure, you’ll find details of what’s on offer from each of our bases, as well as popular destinations and cruising circuits. New to narrowboating? It’s easy for first-timers to learn to operate our boats. And with our nationally accredited handover and tuition, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and in control before you set off (see p.8 for details). Travelling at less than four miles an hour, a narrowboat holiday offers the fastest way to slow down and the chance to sight-see at a relaxed pace. As soon as you are underway on your floating adventure with family or friends, stress levels are reduced and a steadier pace of life takes over.

From fields and wildlife, to fascinating urban landscapes and world class waterside attractions, you’ll see things differently from a canal boat. Across the canal and river network, there are hundreds of waterside pubs to stop off at along the way and, as waterways provide homes for large numbers of birds, plants and animals, including water voles, otters and kingfishers, there’s always something special to look out for. Most mooring sites are free, so you can stay somewhere different every night. You can moor up in the centre of top destinations such as Bath, Birmingham, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon or Chester. Or you can explore sleepy villages, rural backwaters and unspoilt countryside, with the chance to spot many types of waterway wildlife and animals grazing in the fields nearby.
The greener way As soon as you swap your car for a boat, you’ll be using around a third of the fuel and a boating holiday is estimated to be 20 times better for the planet than spending two hours flying to an overseas destination.
What to pack Our canal boats are like floating holiday cottages so you’ll find many of the home comforts already on board, including a galley kitchen equipped with cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, saucepans, a four burner gas cooker with an oven and grill, a microwave (on selected boats) and a fridge with a small freezer compartment (NB some boats have separate freezers or larger compartments). Bedding and bed linen, tea towels, hand towels and one bath towel per person are supplied.
Here’s a list of useful items to pack: 1. Shopping bags – pack your re-useable shopping bags as well as re-useable drink bottles and coffee cups. 2. DVDs, cards & games – for cosy nights in. 3. A torch – for if you venture out to the pub in the evening, as country moorings can be incredibly dark at night. 4. Toilet rolls – we supply toilet rolls but do bring along extra - just standard toilet rolls (not quilted) and no wipes as these block our toilets. 5. Washing up liquid – pack an eco-friendly washing up liquid and hand soap, and make sure your shampoos and face washes are micro-bead free. 6. All weather gear – if it’s wet you’ll need a good waterproof jacket and a large golfing umbrella for the skipper. If it’s sunny, you’ll need a sun hat, sun glasses and sun cream. And gloves are useful for working the locks and steering when it’s cold.
7. Footwear – trainers or rubber soled shoes are best for boating and lock working and bring slippers or warm socks to wear on board. 8. Binoculars – one of the best things about a narrowboat holiday is the wildlife you’ll see along the way! 9. A canal map – you can buy a waterway map in advance from our booking office or at one of our boat yard shops. 10. Drinks – we don’t advise drinking the tap water so it’s a good idea to bring a large bottle of drinking water which can be topped up at water points along the way. And wine boxes are safer to transport than bottles. 11. Phone chargers – our boats have 240 volt 3-pin sockets powered by the on board batteries, so you can charge your phones and tablets on board. Some of our boats also have USB portals. Only charge devices when the engine is running to avoid draining the boat’s batteries (see p.6). 12. Your dog’s bed – pets are welcome on board our boats, but do let us know at the time of booking, and remember to bring your pet’s bed as they aren’t allowed on the beds or chairs. Bring poo bags too. 13. A first aid kit – for any cuts, bumps or scrapes.

What to expect
Our modern and spacious 160 boat fleet provides a range of holiday accommodation to suit everyone, and each of our boats is designed with your comfort in mind. There are cosy two-berths, spacious four-berths to suit a small family, six-berths for extra family room and eight, nine, 10 or 12 berths for bigger parties. There’s a mixture of ‘semi-traditional’ & ‘cruiser’ sterns. Semi-traditional sterns provide an enclosed seating area at the back of the boat, next to where it is steered. Cruiser sterns don’t have seating at the back of the boat, just a safety rail. But there is a bit more space, so these boats can work better if you are bringing your dog. All boats have a full size gas oven, fridge, TV/DVD player, radiator central heating, hot water, showers, flushing toilets, and a surprising amount of storage. Kitchens are fully equipped with all you’ll need for self-catering, including pots and pans, crockery and cutlery sufficient for your party size. Bottled gas is included in your hire charge and there will be ample onboard to see you through your holiday. Some boats have additional items such as a microwave oven, settees, multi-fuel stoves and dressing tables. You can find out exactly what’s included in each boat in the boat layouts on pages 35-42.

Bedding and bed linen, tea towels and hand towels are supplied and all fixed beds are made up prior to your arrival. And for dinette seating which converts into a bed, bedding is provided on request.
You can bring your pet with you Up to two pets are welcome on all our boats, so they don’t have to miss out on the family holiday. The first pet goes free, the second is charged at £25 for a short break, £35 for a week.
Fair fuel costs All our boats start with a full tank of fuel – plenty to cover a 10 day cruise. You pay a fuel deposit when you book your holiday - £90 for a week or more, £50 for a short break. When you bring the boat back to us, the balance of the deposit is refundable after deducting the fuel used. If you have used fuel in excess of the deposit, you will be asked to pay the difference.
Bathrooms The toilets on our boats are fully flushing high specification chemical toilets and showers are fed by the boat’s water tank.
Electrical appliances Unlike at home, there is a limit to the power that is available on a boat. Anglo Welsh boats have a device called an ‘Inverter’ which converts the power from the onboard batteries into a 240-volt supply. Power is measured in watts. For example, a standard household light bulb uses 60 watts and a kettle can use as much as 3000 watts. The inverters have a power limitation of 1000 watts, which excludes many domestic electrical appliances. Usually the following electrical items need more than 1000 watts so they are not permitted to be used on board: kettles; irons; hairdryers; vacuum cleaners; and heaters. The following items usually need less than 1000 watts and therefore can be used: cool boxes; hair straighteners; curling tongs; blenders; phones; tablets; and laptop chargers.
The Golden Rules • If the appliance is above 1000 watts, then don’t bring it onto the boat.
Finally, remember that it’s impossible to guarantee that a battery powered supply system will be able to provide a constant supply of power to any electrical device, including and importantly, medical appliances. This is because the batteries are charged when the engine is running. As soon as the engine is turned off, the electrics will start to run the battery down quite quickly. If you need to bring an electrical medical appliance with you on your holiday, talk to us first.
WiFi We have installed internet hubs on all our boats, except those from Silsden, giving you free 1GB WiFi access on your Anglo Welsh holiday. These hubs provide connection to the internet from aboard the boat – signal permitting – and allow you to keep in touch whilst on holiday. They come with a limited amount of download so they are no substitute for your home broadband. They work in a similar way to a smartphone so are at the mercy of signal strength, which is likely to be poor in rural areas.
• No electrical appliance should be left plugged in unattended • Only use one appliance at a time.

Where do we start?
With such a wide range of starting points across England and Wales, and over 160 boats to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice when planning an Anglo Welsh holiday. Choose your base Your Anglo Welsh base will be your starting and finishing point for your holiday. This is the place you will drive to, unpack, load up your boat and leave your car. Once you have a base in mind, have a look at the suggested route table on the base pages (p.15-34). This will give you an indication of how many hours cruising it will take for your chosen destinations, for you to plan your time. All routes are suitable for all holidaymakers, whether a novice or an experienced cruiser, except the Bath to Bristol route where you’ll be cruising on a tidal river.

How long is your holiday? We offer a complete range of holidays from three-night weekends and four-night midweek getaways to one week, 10-days, two weeks or more! Cruises can start on a Friday, Saturday, Monday or Tuesday, depending on your holiday.
Collecting your boat We want your boat to be in tip top condition when you collect it, so it will be ready from 3pm in the afternoon on your holiday start date.
Returning your boat Boats need to be returned by 9am on the final day of your holiday, or the afternoon before if you’ve made arrangements with the booking team. Please bear this in mind when deciding where to moor on your last night.
Learning how to operate the boat Before you set off
Mooring up
One of our instructors will take you through everything you need to know for your canal boat holiday – how to start the engine, fill up with water, steer, slow down, moor up, work the locks and speak the boating lingo.
Your boat will not be permitted to cruise at night so make sure you are moored by nightfall. Whilst you can choose where you stop for the night, use sign-posted visitor moorings wherever possible, and always moor to the towpath if you can.
You will also be taken through the basics of canal etiquette – which side to drive on (the middle), the best places to moor up and turn, and to slow down when passing moored boats. There is a manual on board every boat if you need to check on anything and our engineering teams are always on hand – 24 hours a day – to help over the phone or come out to you if you need them.

With your tuition complete, you will be ready to enjoy the perfect holiday afloat. We know you will find it both relaxing and revitalizing, with something new to see every minute and the chance to work as a team to go through locks, steer the boat and plan your next stop.

Going through the locks Each lock takes about 20 minutes to go through. Some locks you operate yourself and others are operated by lock keepers. A lock is simply a chamber with gates at either end. By emptying or filling that chamber with water, your boat can move up or down onto a new section of the waterway. There is a series of step-by-step tasks to follow to operate locks.

Constellation Class 12 berth
With two dinette doubles, four single bunks and four singles spread across five cabins, these boats are perfect for two families to holiday together. I recently took a weekend break aboard Delphinus from our Oxford boat yard with my family of four, and my sister and her family. We travelled along the River Thames to Abingdon and back, and the kids loved spotting kingfishers along the way. The walk in showers on board the Constellation Class boats are great! There’s also a 12 berth Constellation at our Stockton base (Lynx), Oxford (Orion) and Whixall (Andromeda).

I love the Heritage Class boats as although they are only for four people, they are 66ft long so there’s plenty of extra space. I took a boating holiday with my boyfriend and another couple, setting off from our canal boat hire base on the Stratford Canal at Wootton Wawen aboard ‘Poppy’. We cruised to Stratford and back and it was fun to moor up right in the centre of the town though slightly nerve-wracking with lots of people watching us moor up in Bancroft Basin! We enjoyed visiting this lovely historic town, with plenty of places to eat out, places to visit like Shakespeare’s Birthplace, and a regular farmers market. Heritage Class is perfect for couples as there are two cabins and two shower rooms. I loved the extra features on board, including the Belfast sink and the tongue and groove dark stained woodwork. Lily at Trevor is our other Heritage Class boat.
These beautiful new boats joined our fleet in 2020. I took a holiday with my family aboard ‘Hawke’, setting out from our base at Whixall on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal. At 65ft long, the four-berth Admiral is light and airy and has lots of extra space, with plenty of room to sit and relax in the evening. There are two cabins which can be made up as doubles or singles, and there’s also a multi-fuel stove on board, perfect for chilly autumn evenings. We spent a lovely week cruising along the Llangollen Canal to the pretty town of Llangollen and back. It’s a great route for beginners as there are very few locks (just two each way) and you get the chance to travel across the amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. At 38 metres high above the rushing waters of the Dee Valley below, you literally feel like you are gliding through the sky! Hawke is currently only one of two four berth Admiral Class boats, with the other at Oxford (Cunningham). We have a two berth Admiral at Trevor (Nelson) and another at Wootton Wawen (Collingwood).

This little boat is just 48ft long so it’s perfect for beginners and for couples. There’s just one fixed double cabin on board and a shower room with a loo and a basin. It was our first canal boat holiday so we chose a weekend aboard Pulteney, setting off from our Stockton narrowboat hire base on the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire. My partner and I like activity holidays so we chose an active route and travelled to Warwick and back. There are 20 locks between Stockton and Warwick so it’s quite a challenge but it’s definitely worth the effort with the chance to enjoy beautiful countryside and canalside pubs along the way, as well as a visit to Warwick Castle. There are also Weir Class boats at Oxford (Romney), Great Haywood (Warleigh), Tardebigge (Rowan), Trevor (Hurley and Osney), Wootton Wawen (Teddington) and Whixall (Grafton).

These 67ft boats are among the most popular in our fleet. They offer two double cabins and two bathrooms, plus the option to convert the dining area into two extra singles, or a double, making it the perfect boat for a multi-generational holiday. I spent a weekend with my parents, niece and nephew aboard ‘Pegasus’, which is based at our Great Haywood base on the Trent & Mersey Canal in Staffordshire. We travelled south to Fradley Junction and back, passing through Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the canal town of Rugeley along the way. Six-berth Constellation Class boats are also based at Whixall (Perseus) and Bunbury (Cygnus and Cassiopeia).

Top 10 Cruises into the Countryside Britain’s network of inland waterways winds its way through 2,000 miles of beautiful countryside.
From the rolling Cheshire Plains of the Shropshire Union to the dramatic Welsh mountains on the Llangollen Canal, aboard your floating holiday home you can enjoy cruising through a wide variety of landscapes. 1. Navigate through the Forest of Arden – from our base at Wootton Wawen, on the Stratford Canal near Henley-in-Arden, travelling through 17 locks, it takes around eight hours to reach the base of the Hatton Flight of Locks. The journey takes you along the Stratford Canal, through farmland and the remains of the Forest of Arden to Kingswood Junction, then onto the Grand Union Canal and the base of the flight of 21 locks at Hatton.

2. Cruise into the Peak District – on a week’s break from our base on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Great Haywood, you can reach the beautiful Caldon Canal and travel into the Peak District. The journey first takes you up to Stoke on Trent to connect onto the Caldon, then on through the gently rolling hills and wooded valleys of the beautiful River Churnet, with the chance to spot kingfishers, herons, woodpeckers and otters. 3. Take a Thames boating holiday to Lechlade – from our base on the River Thames at Oxford, it’s a tranquil nine-hour, seven-lock cruise west to the pretty market town of Lechlade, situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of the Cotswolds. Along the way, you’ll travel through miles of peaceful Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire countryside. 4. Travel round the Stourport Ring – on a week’s break from our base at Tardebigge on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal near Bromsgrove, you can travel round the Stourport Ring. This popular circuit takes boaters on an 84-mile, 118-lock journey, in around 44 hours. Highlights include: Kinver Edge with its National Trust Holy Austin Rock Houses; idyllic stretches of Worcestershire countryside along the River Severn; and the dramatic flight of 30 locks at Tardebigge.
5. Cruise to the gateway of the Yorkshire Dales - from our base at Silsden on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in West Yorkshire, it takes just over three hours to reach Skipton, the ‘Gateway to the Dales’, with its medieval castle and acres of woodland trails to explore. The journey takes you through the typical Yorkshire stone built villages of Kildwick and Farnhill and a wooded area, famous for its bluebells and deer. 6. Float through the Avon Valley – on a short break from our base at Bath on the Kennet & Avon Canal, it takes around 10½ hours to reach Foxhangers Wharf, at the base of the famous Caen Hill Flight of Locks at Devizes. Along the way, you’ll pass through eight locks, over two dramatic Bath stone aqueducts at Dundas and Avoncliff, and past Bradford on Avon with its magnificent 14th century Tithe Barn. 7. Cruise through the Shropshire countryside - from our canal boat rental base at Whixall Marina, on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal in Shropshire, it takes around 13 hours, passing through 19 locks, to reach the historic town of Nantwich. The route transfers onto the Shropshire Union Canal at Barbridge, travelling through the Shropshire and Cheshire countryside. At Nantwich, you’ll travel across the impressive Grade II* listed Nantwich Aqueduct, enjoying panoramic views across the town.
8. Navigate the Four Counties Ring – on a week’s break from our base at Bunbury on the Shropshire Union Canal in Cheshire, you can travel round the Four Counties Ring. Cruising for around 58 hours and passing through 96 locks, the route takes you through the counties of Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Cheshire and Shropshire. Highlights include: panoramic views from the flight of 31 locks between Middlewich and Kidsgrove on the Trent & Mersey Canal; stunning views of the rolling Cheshire Plains on the Shropshire Union Canal; acres of farmland on the Middlewich Branch; and wildlife spotting at Tixall Wide on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. 9. Cruise to the Shropshire Lake District – from our base on the Llangollen Canal at Trevor in North Wales, on a short break you can cruise to the medieval market town of Ellesmere, in the heart of the Shropshire Lake District. The journey takes around seven hours, passing through just two locks and over two magnificent aqueducts, including the famous UNESCO World Heritage Status Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. 10. Travel through the Northamptonshire countryside – on a mid-week break from our base at Stockton, on the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire, you can cruise to the pretty canal village of Stoke Bruerne, home of the Canal Museum and a choice of canalside pubs. The journey takes around 12 hours, passing through 16 locks, and the 2,813-metre long Blisworth Tunnel.

The Cheshire Ring
This superb ring takes in everything from the Peaks to the Cheshire Plain and is achievable in ten days with a steady 7 hours cruising per day from Bunbury (102 locks) or in two weeks, cruising 8 hours per day from Trevor (140 locks).
The Four Counties Ring
One of the most popular rings, giving a lively mix of locks and level cruising and is achievable in a week, cruising 8 hours per day from Great Haywood and Bunbury (96 locks) or in two weeks, from Trevor cruising 8 hours per day.
WHIXALL MARINA
The Black Country Ring
This is an exhilarating ring and achievable in a week with a steady 7-8 hours cruising per day from Tardebigge and Great Haywood (79 locks).
The East Midlands Circuit
This rewarding ring takes in narrow and broad beam canals as well as two different river sections and is achievable in two weeks with a steady 6 hours per day from Stockton (107 locks).

The Avon Ring
A world famous ring that contrasts the quiet of the Avon with the locks of the Lickey Hills and is achievable in one busy week, cruising 9 hours per day from Wootton Wawen and Tardebigge (130 locks) or a comfortable two week cruise, cruising a leisurely 4.5 hours per day. (Remember, time spent on the River Avon costs an extra licence fee, which is payable on the river en route).
The Droitwich Ring
Originally opened in 1771 although last used 65 years ago, the ring has recently undergone extensive renovation. The restored Droitwich canals link the Worcester & Birmingham Canal with the River Severn, allowing this ring to be cruised again. The route takes you through rural Worcestershire, passing through Droitwich Spa and historic Worcester. It’s suitable for a midweek break or longer from Tardebigge, with 30 hours cruising and 117 locks.
The Stourport Ring
This superb ring takes in the Staffs & Worcs Canal, the Worcs & Birmingham Canal, the Birmingham Canal Navigation and an upper section of the River Severn. You can complete this hugely popular route from Tardebigge in one week, cruising 7 hours per day (118 locks), or a leisurely 5 hours per day over 10 days.
The Warwickshire Ring
A mostly rural route, passing some wonderful landmarks and achievable in ten days with a steady 6-8 hours per day from Stockton (94 locks), Wootton Wawen (128 locks) and Tardebigge (121 locks).

City of Bath Cruising from the World Heritage Status City of Bath, or from the outskirts of the City at Brassknocker Basin, these bases offer cruising along the Kennet & Avon Canal, one of the most popular waterways on the network.
Sydney Wharf Suggested Routes
Sydney Wharf From Bristol in the west, to Reading in the east, this stretch of water will capture your imagination and highlight the diverse range of unique experiences an Anglo Welsh narrowboat holiday has to offer. From simple weekend cruises to wonderful weeks and fabulous fortnights, we’re as flexible as you are! Bath makes a fantastic short break destination. The stunning Caen Hill flight of locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Devizes is also a popular destination from our Bath base. Harbour, wharf, aqueduct, tunnel and lock – you can encounter all of them en route on a short break, weekly cruise or longer excursion. Head west from Sydney Wharf, and in just 5 minutes you’ll reach the Visitor Moorings in the heart of the World Heritage City of Bath. If that’s a bit soon for you to be stopping, then the natural hot springs and Thermae Spa, stunning architecture, great shopping, iconic attractions and bustling waterfront restaurants will still be there on the way back! Head further towards the setting sun along the River Avon to Bristol. ‘Jump ship’ with your crew and visit Brunel’s masterpiece, the SS Great Britain, or explore Bristol Zoo, the galleries, museums and parks and the mangroves, rockpools and exotic waters of the new Blue Reef Aquarium at the Harbourside.

It will take you through some of the country’s best-loved landscapes from the rolling Wiltshire Downs to lush and leafy West Berkshire. Our Brassknocker Basin base at the end of the Somerset Coal Canal, just a short two-hour cruise from the centre of Bath, has established itself as a favourite narrowboat holiday start point. With a fabulous rural setting just on the City’s doorstep, our friendly and knowledgeable base team is ready to help with your holiday and ensure you make the best of both worlds. You’ll soon be setting off, enjoying the fresh air, spotting darting kingfishers, listening to the gentle wash of water against the side of the boat, sipping on a cup of coffee, giving a friendly wave to fellow boaters and forgetting about the rest of the world. You might like to stop off at Claverton Pumping Station, which was quite a feat of engineering in its time, and there’s also the fascinating ‘American Museum in Britain’, based at Claverton Manor – it’s a unique collection and the only museum of Americana outside the States.
Route 1 : Short Break – Avoncliff Aqueduct Enjoy one of the prettiest lock free canal stretches in England where you will leave the Roman city of Bath, pass through the tranquil Sydney Garden tunnels, through to Bathampton and onto Claverton. The next 5km provides the unique opportunity to traverse two aqueducts, the first being Dundas followed by Avoncliff an hour later. Along the way, simply enjoy your picnic and the vista of the Limpley Stoke Valley. Route 2 : Weekly Cruise – Great Bedwyn Spend the week navigating one the most beautiful stretches of canal in the UK. Starting in Bath, cruise past the Claverton water-fed pumping station, over the Dundas & Avoncliff aqueducts and stop off at the historic woollen town of Bradford on Avon. Continue through Hilperton, Semington & Seend until you reach one of the true wonders of the canal network – the Caen Hill flight. Experience the thrill of 29 locks! Cruise through to pretty Pewsey and on to Great Bedwyn before returning. Route 3 : 14 Days – Reading Return Built over 200 years by the renowned Victorian engineer John Rennie, this historic canal is crammed full of fascinating places to cruise, visit, see, eat & photograph. The Unesco World Heritage City of Bath, down the Limpley Stoke Valley, Dundas aqueduct, Avoncliff Aqueduct and the old woollen town of Bradford on Avon. Keep on cruising into Devizes and the breathtaking site of the Caen Hill flight. Once you’ve mastered the 29 locks, head towards Pewsey, Great Bedwyn and onto Crofton. The canal continues through the Savernake Forest near Newbury and finally arrives at Reading where it joins the mighty River Thames before your return.

Wootton Wawen Explore Shakespeare country, Stratford-upon-Avon, and the waterways flowing through the ‘Heart of England’.
Our base at Wootton Wawen is in the top two booking bases every year and looking at its location you can see why! Perfectly sited for Birmingham, Stratford-uponAvon, locks, aqueducts, culture, shopping – it’s got it all! Cruising to Stratford-upon-Avon is a firm favourite from Wootton, combining a lovely stretch of canal and the best that Shakespeare has to offer. Heading south on the Stratford Canal, you cross the Edstone Aqueduct. At 475 feet (145 m), Edstone is the longest aqueduct in England. This beautiful town, home of The Royal Shakespeare Company is set on the banks of the River Avon where you can moor up your Anglo Welsh ‘floating hotel’ right in the centre of town and soak up the history and culture of a bygone era. It’s a steady six-hours cruising from Wootton Wawen, so we suggest you spend your first night at Wilmcote and aim to explore historical Stratford around lunchtime the following day – there are plenty of excellent traditional ale houses to sup at! This awesome combination makes Stratford- upon-Avon one of the most popular visitor destinations in the UK, but if you’re hungry for more, you can buy a licence and lock down onto the River Avon, cruising further south through idyllic countryside to Evesham and Tewkesbury. Go north from Wootton Wawen and you’ll be heading for the bright city lights of Birmingham. Whilst the shops and restaurants are fantastic, don’t miss the hidden gem of Birmingham’s history, only seen and truly appreciated from the canals. The Symphony Hall, The National Indoor Arena, The Sealife Centre, The Jewellery Quarter, Chinatown – something for everyone all in one place. If the bustling City is not your thing, then keep it rural by heading onto the Grand Union Canal at Kingswood Junction. Our base at Great Haywood is just 15 minutes away by boat from the beautiful expanse of water on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal known as Tixall Wide, home to an abundance of wildlife. From Tixall Wide, the canal then continues through idyllic towns and villages, through Bratch locks, towards Stourport, and passing Kinver Edge with its rock houses (these are well worth a visit, and only a short way from the canal), and plenty of long walks for the more adventurous. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire is a beautiful canal with lots of attractions and plenty of canal-side pubs.

Head north from Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey Canal to go through the busy town of Stone with all of its shops, bars, and restaurants, leading onto the Potteries. At Etruria you can turn right onto the Caldon canal, taking in its magnificent scenery - if you want peace and quiet this is the canal for you! A short walk from the canal is the Flint Mill and Churnet Valley Railway, with themed weekends great for adults and children alike - you can even bring your dogs along! Head south and you immediately pass the grounds of Shugborough Hall, the former home of Lord Lichfield, only five minutes’ walk from the base! Cruise on to the market town of Rugeley, following the canal as it meanders through the Trent Valley towards the famous Fradley Junction. Continue on the Trent and Mersey to the picturesque village of Alrewas and further onto Burton (brewery capital!) and the Bass Museum, or turn right at Fradley Junction towards Fazeley, a four hour lock-free cruise.
Route 1 : Short Break- Fradley/Fazeley/Alrewas Head south on the Trent and Mersey canal past the grounds of Shugborough Hall (Lord Lichfield’s former home), where the canal meanders through the Trent Valley with multiple canal-side pubs along its route. Three locks descend into the charming Fradley Junction. A right turn takes you onto the Coventry canal which is lock-free all the way to Fazeley, or continue through the locks at Fradley Junction, following the canal to Alrewas, a beautiful village with lovely pubs. Route 2 : Weekly Cruise – Kinver Cruise the picturesque Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, pass through towns and villages towards Stourport, take in countryside and canal-side pubs aplenty, and stop off in Kinver to visit the Rock Houses, just a short walk from the town centre. Route 3 : 14 days – 4 Counties Ring and Caldon The inland waterway’s most popular ring, featuring a lively mix of locks and level cruising. The ring includes the famous 2670 metre Harecastle Tunnel, Wedgewood Pottery Visitor Centre, and the Cheshire Locks also known as “Heartbreak Hill”. The Caldon Branch splits into two arms: one heads towards Leek, the other drops into the Churnet Valley and joins the river at Froghall.

There’s a choice of short and long breaks, which will take in the glorious English countryside through Cheshire and Shropshire or even the delights of North Wales. Cruising north you’ll be heading for Chester – old enough to make your spine tingle, yet young enough in spirit to be effortlessly fashionable. Route 1 : Short Break – Chester and Ellesmere Port Return 30 miles, 24 locks and approx 6-8 cruising hours per day. Head north from the base on the Shropshire Union, towards the historic city of Chester. There’s plenty to see on the way as you pass through the rolling Cheshire landscape, including the famous “Cheshire Ice Cream Farm” at Tattenhall and also “The Crocky Trail” - two great favourites with kids of all ages!
Carry on cruising further north again and you’ll reach Ellesmere Port, where the history of the canals began. Or take the Shropshire Union Canal (the ‘Shroppie’) south with not a city in sight; bear off down the Middlewich Branch and cruise to the world famous Anderton Boat Lift. It’s the world’s first working boat lift. Time travel through the unique structure on board the Edwin Clark trip boat, journeying between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal high above. With an additional seven miles of The Montgomery Canal also recently restored, a cruise along ‘The Monty’ is a must for conservation and wildlife enthusiasts. With its ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and ‘Special Area of Conservation in Wales’ awards, this canal is cherished for its exceptional beauty.
oute 2 : Weekly Cruise – Llangollen Return R After Hurleston Junction, turn right onto the most popular canal in Britain – the Llangollen. With only a handful of locks, as well as tunnels, lift bridges and aqueducts along its forty-five mile length, the Llangollen really does have a taste of everything the canals have to offer. There’s plenty to keep all the family occupied and with lots of pubs and restaurants along the canalside, you won’t have to travel far for a hearty traditional meal. Route 3 : 14 Days – Cheshire Ring Another of those ‘once in a lifetime’ routes – head north from Middlewich passing the Anderton Boat Lift and on onto Preston Brook and Warrington, before turning east into Manchester. Pass the world renowned football stadiums “Old Trafford” and the “Etihad” – make sure you know your red from your blue! Then continue out of Manchester onto the Macclesfield Canal and peace and tranquillity returns as the canal becomes a quiet sleepy route through the gorgeous, rolling hills.

Trevor, at the northern end of the Llangollen is home to the ‘Crown Jewel’ of the canals. It’s breathtakingly spectacular and should be on every boater’s “Bucket List”
Featured Routes Trevor’s awesome Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, nicknamed the ‘Stream in the Sky’ for obvious reasons, carries the Llangollen canal 126ft high above the River Dee. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument; a Grade I Listed structure and was granted World Heritage status in June 2009, putting it on an equal footing with the Great Barrier Reef and Statue of Liberty! It towers above the heart of this breathtaking 18km long site, stretching from Gledrid Bridge near Rhoswiel in Wales, to the Horseshoe Falls in Llantysilio, on the River Dee. Situated right on the doorstep of our picturesque base, cross the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct for the experience of a lifetime. In your boat, the effect is that of being suspended in mid-air. The views are spectacular, so don’t forget (or drop) your camera! With delightful Llangollen town only a two hour cruise away, don’t miss out on a visit to The Steam Railway Centre. Navigate the Llangollen to experience one of the UK’s most stunning stretches of inland waterway, from the hills of Wales on to Shropshire, rich in wildlife, with its meres, then on to the rolling plains of Cheshire. There are tunnels, lift bridges and not too many locks to negotiate, along with its world famous aqueducts of course.
Route 1 : Short Break – Trevor to Ellesmere Cruise across the World Heritage site of the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, through one lift bridge at Froncysyllte, two tunnels and then on to Chirk Aqueduct. Meander along to the small Shropshire town of Ellesmere with its ‘mini lakes’, passing through only two locks on the way. oute 2 : Weekly Cruise – Trevor to Wrenbury R Across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and through Ellesmere, on into the “Meres”– small lakes teeming with wildlife – be sure to have your camera ready. Follow the twists and turns to Whitchurch and moor up – or carry on to Grindley Brook Locks – (a set of three manned locks). Carry on to Wrenbury where you’ll find a couple of fine eateries and a handy village shop up by the church. There’s also the electric Lift Bridge and some lovely walks if you fancy a break from the cruising. oute 3 : Weekly Cruise –Trevor/Montgomery Canal/ R Ellesmere & Llangollen After a relaxing couple of days on the Montgomery canal, carry on to 18th century market town of Ellesmere, where there are plenty of mooring places. There are some nice shops, an excellent deli, and even a supermarket right alongside the canal. Carry on for a couple of miles and you pass numerous Meres, where swans and geese abound. On your return (and time permitting) why not go up to Llangollen, a 2-hour trip through the beautiful countryside of the Dee Valley; mooring will cost you £6, but a four-hour stop is free. Reminder: bookings are required for passage through the locks onto the Montgomery canal.

Located on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal, Whixall is arguably Britain’s most rural marina. One of the main attractions of Whixall is its proximity to the picturesque Llangollen Canal. Just a half hour cruise to join the main line then you decide to turn left for Llangollen itself, or right to Hurleston Junction and join the Shropshire Union Canal. Having chosen the left turn you’re immediately rewarded with seven miles of quiet, winding canal leading into the aptly named market town of Ellesmere.

Nineteen miles and only two locks later, you’ve reached the historic town of Llangollen, with its many attractions. There are three stunning canal features to add excitement to your journey. Chirk Aqueduct takes you across the border into North Wales, followed by the 459 yards single width Chirk Tunnel, and then the jewel in the crown of the whole canal network! Pontcysyllte Aqueduct sits 126 feet above the River Dee and is single width for its 1007 feet length. If you prefer a more active holiday head to Chester.
Featured Routes A pretty countryside cruise, passing through the market town of Whitchurch, brings you to Grindley Brook flight of six locks with a 3-tier staircase descending through 20 feet. There is a lock keeper on hand to guide and help you and afterwards you have six miles to relax before your next challenge, Wrenbury Lift Bridge. This bridge is electrically operated, for which you will need your waterways key. The bridge carries the road into an industrial estate and stopping the traffic at factory finishing time is not advisable - you won’t be popular! A sharp left turn at Hurleston Junction guides you onto the Shropshire Union Canal and a northerly heading towards Chester. The double width staircase lock at Bunbury, adjacent to the Anglo Welsh base, contrasts with the flat green fields of the Cheshire Plain. Upon reaching the ancient city of Chester, famous attractions abound! The cathedral, castle, racecourse, Roman walls, zoo and of course bars and restaurants offer something for everyone. Route 1 : Short Break – Chirk Return The rolling green fields of Shropshire and Cheshire provide the backdrop to the canal on this cruise. A leisurely trip with only two locks in each direction leads you to the pleasant village of Chirk, with its historic buildings and town trail. Cross the splendid 70-feet high aqueduct and turn just before the tunnel. There’s no turning point after the tunnel. There’s a choice of pubs in Chirk, one of which boasts of being “the last pub in England.” Route 2 : Weekly Cruise – Llangollen Return The Llangollen Canal is possibly the most popular in Britain, with attractions for families or groups of friends. Picturesque countryside takes you through Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales, with canalside pubs catering for boaters. A camera is a must for the architecture and views that the tunnels and aqueducts offer, particularly Pontcysyllte. An unusual canal feature is a 2 mph water flow meaning that your return journey will be quicker than the outbound trip. Route 3 : Weekly Cruise – Chester Return An interesting cruise, with staircase locks and lift bridges adding to the canal experience as well as the beautiful Cheshire countryside. The Llangollen Canal traverses the pretty towns of Whitchurch and Wrenbury before descending into Hurleston Junction. Here you join the Shropshire Union Canal taking you into the historic city of Chester. A walk round the Roman walls will restore your “land legs” before you sample the numerous bars and restaurants in this delightful city.

Silsden Tucked away in the Yorkshire Dales, this gem of a base is the perfect place to explore Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
Your holiday starts in the small Yorkshire town of Silsden, which dates back to Saxon times, with its duck pond in the centre of the main street. Going west from Silsden, the canal passes through the typical Yorkshire stonebuilt villages of Kildwick and Farnhill and on into a dense wooded area famous for its bluebells and deer. Through Bradley - a quintessential ‘mill village’ with cricket field and a very nice country pub. Then on to Skipton, the ‘Gateway to the Dales’ with a market four days a week, and a Farmers’ market once a month. The canal continues through countryside to the delightful village of Gargrave, where it runs close to the river Aire. It is also the start of a flight of six locks, followed quickly by another six locks at Bank Newton, hailed by many as the most beautiful locks on the whole canal system. These take the canal up into the Dales with stunning views, until you reach the hamlet of East Marton, with its famous double arch bridge. From here, continue into the countryside to the three locks at Greenberfield, also in a very picturesque setting.

Featured Routes These locks take the canal onto the summit, and through Salterforth, then to Foulridge, and the famous mile long tunnel (ask about the story of the swimming cow!). If you have longer on the canal, and you’re feeling energetic, you can carry on through the Lancashire cotton towns, over Burnley embankment, and onto Wigan with its flight of 21 locks. If you decide to travel east from Silsden towards Leeds, then, – along with swing bridges, – you will encounter the famous Grade 1 listed ‘Bingley Five Rise’ locks, which take you down 60ft. These are followed by ‘Bingley Three Rise’ which drop a mere 29ft. There are a few more locks before you reach Saltaire, which is a World Heritage Site built by Sir Titus Salt for his mill workers. Here you can visit Salts Mill, which has an art gallery showing the work of David Hockney, a café and various other shops. Leaving Saltaire, you travel parallel with the River Aire into the centre of Leeds. There’s loads more to learn about the Leeds & Liverpool, so give us a call!

Day Boats Available at six of our bases, our day boats offer a great day out in the countryside with friends and family.
Dip your toe in the water with our day boat hire. Available at most of our bases, our day boats offer a great way to try canal boating and get the hang of steering, mooring up and working the locks*. All our day boats are equipped with a fridge, toilet, cutlery, crockery, a kettle and a hob, so you can pack a picnic and head out for the day with everything you need, or plan a stop at a canalside pub. Tuition is included as part of our day boat hire package. Prices start from just ÂŁ10 per person. Cruising hours during the season are from 9am to 4pm. All our day boats carry a maximum of ten people and are designed with indoor and outdoor seating. Check the layout with the Booking Team as they are all slightly different. *N.B. not all our day boat routes will include locks

Day boat hire routes & prices Cheshire - from Bunbury on the Shropshire Union Canal near Tarporley, you can cruise south for six sedate miles, and travel across the impressive Grade II* listed Nantwich Aqueduct, with panoramic views across the town. Shropshire - from Whixall on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal you can either head east to Whitchurch in just over two hours, or west to Ellesmere in the heart of the Shropshire Lake District in around three hours. Staffordshire - from Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey Canal you can either travel south to the historic market town of Rugeley, passing through the Cannock Chase Forest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or north to the village of Sandon with a choice of pubs along the way. Warwickshire - from Wootton Wawen on the Stratford Canal near Henley-in-Arden, you can either head south to the historic village of Wilmcote, passing over the impressive Edstone Aqueduct, or north to Lowsonford, passing through the remains of the Forest of Arden.
Wrexham – from Trevor on the Llangollen Canal in North Wales you can cruise east across the incredible Pontcysyllte and Chirk aqueducts and on to Chirk Bank, or west to the pretty town of Llangollen, on the edge of the Berwyn Mountains. Worcestershire - from Tardebigge on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal near Bromsgrove you can cruise north along the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to Kings Norton Junction, passing through fields, wooded sections and two canal tunnels.
Alcohol – a sad but necessary warning Whilst we want everyone to enjoy their day boat cruise, our primary concern is for your health and safety, and that of others on the waterway. Our base staff will not allow excessive amounts of alcohol to be taken aboard the boats, and will decline to handover any boat where they feel this may be an issue. This would result in you forfeiting your booking payment. If your boat crew is reported causing disruption on the waterway, the crew will be escorted from the boat and all payments and security deposits will be forfeit. The crew will also be reported to waterway authorities, which could result in prosecution.

Winter Cruising We offer winter cruising from October to March at six of our narrowboat hire bases, giving you the chance to celebrate Christmas or New Year on the canals.
Whether you want to head to a festive waterfront destination, or escape from it all in a quiet rural area, Christmas on the canals offers a very special experience. Our winter canal boat hire bases offer a range of routes*, with plenty of historic rural pubs to stop off at along the way. You can cruise through the Welsh Mountains from Trevor, the Staffordshire countryside from Great Haywood, or Shakespeare’s country from Wootton Wawen. Alternatively, take a Christmas shopping expedition to Birmingham from Tardebigge, head to Chester from Bunbury, or Whitchurch from Whixall. All our boats have central heating, hot water, TV and DVD players, so it’s always nice and cosy on board. Some of our boats also come with multi-fuel stoves for some extra special winter warmth. Our prices over Christmas and New Year start at £560 for a short break on a boat for four people and weekly hire from £775. *NB some of our routes will be affected by winter maintenance work on the canal network.

Terms & Conditions Please read these terms and conditions carefully when you book a holiday with us you are entering into a contract, which binds us in various ways. You are strongly advised to ensure you have adequate personal travel insurance, which should also cover any of your potential liabilities in this agreement. 1. Definitions.“The Company” means Anglo Welsh Ltd trading as Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays.“The Hirer” means the designated Skipper named on the Handover Certificate. Where there is more than one Hirer, they shall be individually responsible and liable under this agreement. 2. Booking Agreement. A booking is a legally binding contract. The contract includes these conditions which the Hirer accepts having read and agreed them. The entire contract between the Company and the Hirer is contained in these conditions and the booking form and no representations, terms, warranty or condition expressed or implied shall be deemed to be or have been made or agreed or imported by reference to any other writing, advertisement or conversation. No agent, servant or representative of the Company has any right to alter or vary or waive any of these conditions. Nor is any such person authorized to undertake and liability whatsoever on behalf of the Company. These conditions can only be varied with the written permission signed by a Director or the General Manager of the Company. The Hirer acknowledges that no statement or representation which may have been made by or on behalf of the Company induced the Hirer to enter into the contract and that any such statements or representations do not form part of the contract. Any liability of the Company and any remedy of the Hirer in respect of any such statement or representation is excluded save in so far as liability in respect of any particular statement or representation may not be excluded by law. In accepting a booking, the company’s responsibility does not extend beyond the provision of the boat and in particular there is no warranty that any particular route will be available for navigation during the period of hire. Where more than one boat is booked on the same booking form each boat shall be deemed to be the subject of a separate contract. Bookings for optional extras are taken subject to availability on the start date. 3. Group Bookings, Age Limits and Unsuitable Hirers. The Hirer must be aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that whenever the boat is driven by a person aged under 18, that they will at all times be under the close supervision of a competent person aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that two able body people aged 18 years or older will be aboard the boat, taking responsibility of boat and crew at all times. The Hirer must provide on the booking form all details of all persons in their party. On arrival at the base, the boat handover certificate must be completed in full. The company reserves the right to cancel any booking made in contravention of either of the above conditions, on or before the start date and any monies paid to the company shall be forfeit. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boats to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of infirmity, ill health, disability, or who have failed to demonstrate a reasonable standard of competence following appropriate instruction in boat handling. In this event, the company will refund all monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boat to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of suspected influence of alcohol or drugs. In this event, the company will not refund any monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may repossess the boat at any time if in the opinion of the company, the Hirer is unsuitable for the above reasons, or, if the Hirer is not behaving responsibly, or if the boat or any persons are at risk. In this event, the Hirer shall remain liable to pay the full hire price and no refund will be given. Anglo Welsh are one of the few operators who will entertain celebratory parties. Sadly, the actions of the few have repercussions on the many. Therefore, any booking may be required to place a pre-authorised deposit of £1,000 per boat. All or a portion of this amount may be retained in the event of any transgressions to our Terms and Conditions. In the event of a party or boat declining to register this deposit upon request, the boat will not be handed over to the customer and all monies paid by the customer for the holiday shall be forfeit. Additional deposits of up to £100 per person may be required at the discretion of Anglo Welsh Ltd. For certain parties, the deposit will be returned to you when you have finished your holiday, providing the boat and its equipment is returned on time, undamaged, clean and tidy, with no third party claim. If You or any member of Your party has a disability and/or reduced mobility that may affect Your booking, it is Your responsibility to notify the Company when making the booking or, if such disability and/or reduced mobility becomes apparent after the booking, no later than 48 hours prior to the Start Date. Subject to the foregoing, although the Company has no expertise in this subject matter, the Company will try and advise you as to the suitability of the boat you have chosen to hire and possible alternatives but You acknowledge that certain space restrictions and practical safety considerations apply on board boats which may prevent a person with a disability or reduced mobility from accessing the boat and/or complying with all safety requirements. Where You have made a booking and You or a member of Your party subsequently becomes disabled or otherwise a person with reduced mobility the Company may not always be able to accommodate their needs. If in the Company’s reasonable opinion it is unable to properly accommodate the needs of the person(s) concerned or You do not accept such alternative arrangements as the Company may offer, the Company may, without liability, treat this as a request to terminate Your booking. The Company may require the person(s) concerned to produce a medical certificate certifying that they are fit to participate in the hire of the boat. The Company shall not be liable for any loss or damage caused as a result of a disability and/or reduced mobility, save where such loss or damage is caused by the negligence of the Company and results in death or personal injury. 4. Cancellations & Changes. The agreement including the payment terms is a legally binding contract and may not be cancelled or amended except as provided in the Conditions. Should the Hirer wish to cancel or amend the booking they must advise the Company immediately by telephone and at the same time send written confirmation by Recorded Delivery post. In the event of a cancellation, the deposit will be forfeited and the hirer will pay the balance price on the due date. The Company may at its discretion waive the balance price if it is successful in re-letting the boat for the whole of the hire period. It is therefore strongly recommended that the hirers protect themselves against cancellation liability by taking out cancellation protection. In the event of any claim being disallowed for any reason the hirer remains liable for the full hire charges. In the event of the operator being unable to re-book the boat the hirer will remain responsible for the full hire price unless covered by a cancellation protection scheme. Cancellation Protection Scheme: A contract exists once a deposit has been paid and a booking has been confirmed, and you are liable for the whole cost of the holiday even if you are unable to take your holiday. Anglo Welsh Ltd. has created an optional Cancellation Protection Scheme (CPS) to offer you protection against this liability in certain circumstances. Where any of the qualifying circumstances are met, all hire monies will be repaid in full minus the Cancellation Protection fee and the Hirer will be absolved from any balancing hire payment. The decision of Anglo Welsh Ltd. is final. CPS only covers complete cancellation prior to the start of the holiday. It does not give a pro rata refund if one or more persons are unable to take the holiday. Cover is only provided for those persons named on the booking. Any claim must be supported by documentary evidence. Any claim must be made at the earliest opportunity by telephone and backed up in written form via Recorded Delivery Mail. Qualifying circumstances include: Death, injury, illness, pregnancy complications or confinement immediately prior to holiday commencement (certified in all cases by a qualified registered Medical Practitioner in writing). The above circumstances would also apply
to a near relative (husband, wife, father, mother, parent-in-law, sister, brother, child) or a close business associate. Jury Witness service in a court of law. Fire, storm, flood, subsidence or malicious damage making the Hirer’s home uninhabitable. Police requiring the Hirer’s presence following burglary at home or place of business. Cancelled orders in respect of U.K. Police and Military Personnel. 5. Hire Period, Collection and Return of the Boat. The hire period is as shown on the booking confirmation sheet. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE AT THE BASE IN TIME TO COLLECT YOUR BOAT. THE ‘WINDOW’ FOR ARRIVAL IS 14.00 - 16.00. YOU MUST ARRANGE TO ARRIVE AT THE BASE WITHIN THIS ‘WINDOW’. YOU MUST ARRIVE AT THE BASE IN TIME TO BOARD YOUR BOAT AND HAVE PROPER INSTRUCTION BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO CRUISE. Check in for holidays is from 14.00. Boats are available from 15.00.In order to cruise on the first day of your holiday, you must arrive at the base before 16.00. If you arrive after 16.00 you may not have a “boat handover” and you will not be able to cruise the boat. All bases are closed from 17.00 and you will not be able to gain access. Before departure, the company will give the Hirer such instructions and trials as the company sees fit, and requires the Hirer to check and sign for contents, inventory and Boat Acceptance. In the event that the boat is unavailable because of circumstances beyond the company’s control, the company may substitute a boat of similar accommodation, but if no such boat is available, the company shall refund any payments made but shall not otherwise be liable and the contract shall be discharged. The boat shall be returned to the company’s hire base no later than 9am on the morning of the end date. The boat shall be vacated and left in a clean and tidy condition by 9.30 am on the morning of the end date. The boat may not be returned to the base early except by prior arrangement in writing with Anglo Welsh’s Head Office. Hirers are responsible for ensuring their cruising schedule allows them ample time to return to the base by the stated time. Breach of this condition will incur a minimum additional charge of £75 per hour or part thereof. In addition, the Hirer will be liable for any extra costs incurred by the company as a result of the boat not being ready for the next Hirer. Where the company has to recover a boat and return it to the base, the Hirer shall be liable for all costs incurred. 6. Prices and Payment. Prices are inclusive of VAT and are subject to any change in the VAT rate prior to the settlement of the price in full. The booking statement and confirmation are not VAT invoices. Prices are in pound sterling. Hire cost includes navigation licences for waterways operated by the Canal & River Trust covering most UK canals but not UK river navigations (including but limited to Thames, Upper & Lower Avon, Wey) where the hirer can purchase a visitor licence in advance or on arrival at additional cost. The Hirer shall reimburse the Company on demand for any expenses incurred in the conversion of foreign currencies, bank charges, special clearance, re-presenting cheques, processing payments or otherwise in obtaining cleared sterling funds of the amount due on the due date. Payment is not made until cash or cleared funds have been received by the Company. The booking deposit must be sent with the booking application and unless otherwise stated is 25% of the basic holiday brochure price. The balance of the price is due not less than 8 weeks before the hire start date. Time of payment shall be the essence of the contract. For bookings made within 8 weeks before the hire start date payment in full must accompany the booking form. Without prejudice to any other rights of the Company it may charge interest (both before and after any judgement) at the rate of 4% over the company’s bankers base lending rate on any monies due from the due payment date until the date of payment and interest shall accrue from day to day. 7. Insurance. The boats, their equipment and inventory are insured by the company against public liability risks. The company’s insurance does not cover personal accidents or loss or damage to personal effects. Hirers and their crews are strongly advised to take out their own personal insurance cover. The Hirer shall pay a compulsory £50.00 accidental damage waiver for each booking. Accidental damage waiver does not cover damage arising from speeding, contact with a lock sill causing damage to the rudder, skeg or stern gear, TV aerials, chimneys, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, or to other boats and or property, loss or damage of boat inventory and equipment. The late return of a boat or return of the boat in an unclean condition is not covered by the Accidental damage waiver. The Hirer will indemnify the company against all costs, damage, expenses, liability and claims howsoever arising from the negligence, neglect or default of the Hirer to the extent that they are not covered by the company’s policy. 8. Obeying the Rules of the Waterways. The Hirer agrees to comply with the following rules at all times for the Health & Safety of the persons on the boat and other persons and the boat and its property: - The boat may not tow nor may it be allowed to be towed by another craft, except under professional assistance in the event of an emergency. Not to cruise between sunset and sunrise. The boat is only equipped to cruise during daylight hours. To observe all speed limits. Not to race or to cruise at a speed which causes a wash, or disturbs or inconveniences other waterway users. Not to take nor allow to be carried on the boat, any dinghies, canoes, inflatables, portable heaters, barbecues of any kind, vehicles, lighting equipment, TV sets, any electrical appliances (save razors), inflammable liquids or substances, gas cylinders, car batteries, firearms or any other items which might cause dangers or hazards. Not to use the boat for business purposes. Not to allow on the boat at any time more persons than the maximum number of berths. Not to have or to carry live fishing bait on the boat. At all times to observe all bye laws, navigational limits, or instructions and advice of Canal & River Trust or any other navigational authorities, the company and their respective officers and employees. The company reserves the right at its discretion, without liability, to restrict cruising areas or routes in light of prevailing conditions. 9. Accidents. The Hirer is in charge of the boat and is responsible for its safe navigation and return. In the event of an accident the hirer must: -Get full details of all other persons involved as well as relevant boat names and registrations. The Hirer must inform the company immediately with full details. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ADMIT OR ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON ABOARD THE BOAT TO ADMIT ANY LIABILITY TO ANY OTHER PERSON. Not have repairs carried out without the company’s express permission. At all times obtain and follow the company’s instructions. In the event that the company’s insurance cover is prejudiced or invalidated by any failure on the part of the Hirer to comply with the provisions of this condition, the Hirer shall indemnify the company in respect of liability claims, loss, damage or expenses incurred. The Hirer shall be responsible for getting the boat off mud banks or other grounding and for removal of weeds, rope and other matter from propellers. The Hirer is responsible for and shall indemnify the company against any claim or charge made by any Navigation Authority for damage to waterway property or loss of water. In the event that the Company’s insurance is prejudiced or invalidated by any failure on the part of the Hirer to comply with the provisions of this condition the Hirer shall indemnify the Company in respect of all liability claims, loss damages or expenses incurred. The Hirer is liable for and shall indemnify the Company against any claim or charge made by any Navigation Authority for damage to waterway property or loss of water. 10. Repairs and Breakdowns. The Hirer shall notify the company in the event of breakdown, damage, theft or loss and shall provide full details and shall comply with all company instructions. The Hirer must not allow any repairs, adjustment or service without the company’s prior approval. The Hirer shall have no claim on the company as a result of breakdown or the failures of the boat and its equipment, or for any delays caused by repairs to the boat.
11. Car parking & Hirer’s Personal Property. Free parking for two vehicles is provided for customers by arrangement, although at certain times of the year spaces are limited. The Hirer agrees to comply with the Company’s instructions on car parking. THE COMPANY ACCEPTS NO LIABILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE TO VEHICLES OR THE CONTENTS THEREIN. The Hirer is particularly advised not to leave valuables or ready portable items in cars. The Hirer is strongly recommended to take out Personal Holiday Insurance. The Company shall take such action as may be necessary to silence car alarms in the company’s car parks and to recover the costs from the hirer The Company may return hirer’s property left behind if claimed and following the receipt of payment for postage and packing (minimum charge £10). Property not claimed within two months from the end date will be disposed of by the Company. 12. Fuel. The boat is handed over ready fuelled but the cost of hire does not include the fuel consumed. A fuel deposit is payable 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. At the end of your holiday period the boat must be refuelled and any difference to the deposit paid will be refunded or charged. The Boat Owner or the Company may make a fuel surcharge if there is any material increase of diesel or gas prices or duty. Whilst water supply and moorings on the canals are normally free of charge, any costs incurred are the responsibility of the Hirer. Where pump-outs are required to toilet tanks, the cost is the responsibility of the Hirer unless carried out at the Company’s base. 13. Pets. You are normally allowed to bring your cat or dog with you, but you must tell us at the time of making your booking. YOU MUST BRING YOUR PET BLANKET OR BASKET WITH YOU AS PETS ARE ONLY ALLOWED ON THE CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY THEY LIE ON THE BEDDING OR CHAIRS. Your pet must not be left unattended on the boat. Pets are not covered under the company’s insurance policy and the Hirer is liable for any costs incurred by extra cleaning and any delays incurred as a cause. Registered Assistance Dogs will be accepted free of charge although all conditions apply. 14. Complaints. The Hirer will check the boat and its equipment fully, immediately after taking possession of the boat. Any shortcomings must be brought to the company’s attention BEFORE the boat leaves the base. The Hirer shall sign a Boat Acceptance form before departure and thereafter the Hirer is completely responsible for the boat its equipment and its operation until it is handed back to the company at the end of the hire. Any short comings subsequently discovered shall immediately be notified to the company by telephone in order to give the company the opportunity to take necessary remedial action. The company shall not be liable in respect of any matter not so notified immediately. 15. Brochure & Website. The specification of boats, their accommodation, facilities and equipment in the brochure is intended as a general guide but the Company shall not be liable in the event of any differences in the boat supplied and reserves the right to make modifications. Layout plans are for guidance only and are not to scale and may have steps which are not shown. The Company reserve the right to change boat specifications without prior notice. 16. Damage Waiver (compulsory) The Damage Waiver Fee is £50.00. It is non-refundable and avoids the requirement for a damage deposit payment. There are certain exclusions: • Return of the boat late • Return of the boat in an unclean condition • Damage arising from negligence, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, its inventory, third party property, the canal and its structures. • Damage to the rudder, skeg or transmission due to contact with a lock cill • Excessive speeding in the boat – the limit is 4 m.p.h. In the event of the above, the Hirer will be liable for all additional costs incurred above and beyond the Damage Waiver. 17. Jurisdiction. The contract between the Company and the Hirer shall be deemed to have been made in England and should be governed in all respect by English law. The Hirer shall submit to the jurisdiction of the English courts provided that the Company at its option may bring any legal proceedings against the Hirer from courts in any other country. 18. Waiver. No indulgence, forbearance or delay by the Company shall constitute any bar to its enforcement of its rights at any time and no waiver in respect of any breach shall operate as a waiver in respect of any subsequent breach. 19. Third Parties. No person who is not a party to this Agreement may enforce any term of this agreement. The parties agree that the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 shall not apply to this Agreement or to any agreement or document entered into pursuant to this Agreement. 20. Privacy. The handling and collection of any personal customer data is processed in accordance with local law and is not sold to third parties. The Company reserves the right at any time to board the boat and access its accomodation to inspect it (including but not limited to where You have complained about the boat). If this happens, the Company will try to give You reasonable notice first, notwithstanding which you agree to allow the Company or its representative(s) or contractor(s) immediate access to the boat at any time. 22. Acts beyond the parties’ control. The Company will neither be in breach of the Agreement nor liable for delay in performing, or failure to perform, any of its obligations under the Agreement if such delay or failure result from events, circumstances or causes beyond its reasonable control, including, without limitation, acts of God, flood, drought or other natural disaster; epidemic or pandemic; civil commotion or riots; any law or any action taken by a government or public authority (including without limitation failing to grant a necessary licence or consent); collapse of buildings, fire, explosion or accident; any labour or trade dispute, strikes, industrial action or lockouts; interruption or failure of utility service; limitations, restrictions or prohibitions by relevant authorities on the use of relevant waterways or boats (“Force Majeure Event”). If You are unable to take up Your booking because of UK government legislation, regulation or guidance or, You may: subject always to availability, transfer Your booking to a later date, free of any administration charges. You will have to pay any difference in price if the cost of the new booking is higher or be reimbursed the difference if the cost of the new booking is lower; or request a voucher with a redemption value equal to the amount previously paid by You for the booking – the voucher terms and conditions will be available to You before You make Your choice under this Condition; or if the Company is required by law to provide it, obtain a refund of any amount already paid by You for the booking and cancel Your booking. If You have to cut short Your booking because of UK government legislation, regulation or guidance, You will be entitled to a pro-rata refund of the Price (to the extent it has been paid), but any insurance premiums, booking fees or administration charges paid will not be refundable. You will have to contact the Company in order to access these options. 23. Disputes. Disputes arising out of or in connection with the Agreement, when they cannot be resolved by negotiation, may, with the written agreement of the Parties, first be submitted to mediation under British Marine’s Dispute Resolution Scheme. Details of the Scheme are available to current British Marine members or on request from British Marine and/or on British Marine’s member website.

CANCELLATION PROTECTION SCHEME Important, Please Read Carefully
We all look forward to our holidays as a time to relax and get away from the day to day worries of life. But sometimes circumstances intervene and you might have cause to cancel your holiday. Under the terms of hire with us, a contract exists once a deposit has been paid and a booking has been confirmed, and you are liable for the whole balance even if you are unable to take your holiday. Anglo Welsh has created an optional Cancellation Protection Scheme to offer you protection against this liability in certain circumstances.
Any claim must be made at the earliest opportunity by telephone and backed up in written form via Recorded Delivery Mail. Qualifying circumstances include: Death, injury, illness, pregnancy complications or confinement immediately prior to holiday commencement (certified in all cases by a qualified registered Medical Practitioner in writing).
Where any of the qualifying circumstances are met, all hire monies will be repaid in full minus the Cancellation Protection fee and the Hirer will be absolved from any balancing hire payment. The decision of Anglo Welsh Ltd. is final.
The above circumstances would also apply to a near relative (husband, wife, father, mother, parent-in-law, sister, brother, child) or a close business associate.
The Cancellation Protection Scheme only covers complete cancellation prior to the start of the holiday. It does not give a pro rata refund if one or more persons are unable to take the holiday. Cover is only provided for those persons named on the booking. Any claim must be supported by documentary evidence.
Jury Witness service in a court of law. Fire, storm, flood, subsidence or malicious damage making the Hirer’s home uninhabitable. Police requiring the Hirer’s presence following burglary at home or place of business. Cancelled orders in respect of U.K. Police and Military Personnel.

Talk to us We want to make booking your holiday as easy as possible and our booking team is on hand to help you. They know the Anglo Welsh holiday business inside out and are dedicated to our customers. It’s a small team, not a huge call centre so that we can offer a personal service. We want to meet all your needs and ensure you have a memorable holiday. We offer a seven day, no obligation, provisional booking service, giving you time to organise your party and holiday dates.
When is the booking office open? We are here from 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays, from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays. The booking office is closed on Easter Sunday, from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, and on New Year’s Day. Messages can be left outside office hours and we will call you straight back when we reopen.
What do I need to be able to book? Have your credit/debit card details ready and the team can book your holiday on the spot.
When do I pay the final balance? You’ll need to pay the balance of your invoice eight weeks before your holiday starts. You can either pay by cheque or credit/debit card. If you would like to pay by cheque, please make cheques payable to ‘Anglo Welsh Limited’.
When do I pay for fuel?
How much deposit is required?
All our boats start with a full tank of fuel - plenty to cover a steady two week cruise. You pay a fuel deposit when you book your holiday – this is £90 per week or more or £50 per short break.
The deposit is 25% of your basic brochure holiday price (Box A on your booking form), or full payment if your holiday is within eight weeks of booking.
When you bring the boat back to us the balance of the deposit is refundable after deducting the fuel used. If you have used fuel in excess of the deposit, you will be asked to pay the difference.
