The
Narrowboat Experience Why canal boat holidays are so great for families… It’s a real adventure with everyone heading off together, looking out for interesting things to see and do along the way; We provide you with buoyancy aids and boat steering tuition so everyone can enjoy learning together to master navigation skills and work the locks; Enjoy learning the boating lingo together - ‘windlass’, ‘winding hole’ and ‘tiller’, ‘bow’, ‘stern’, ‘port’ and ‘starboard’, spot wildlife, including the flashing blue of the kingfisher and ‘plop’ of the water vole;
New to Narrowboating? It’s easy for first-timers to learn to operate our boats. And with our nationally accredited handover and tuition, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and in control before you set off. See page 14 for details. Travelling at less than four miles an hour, a narrowboat holiday offers the fastest way to slow down and the chance to sight-see at a relaxed pace. As soon as you are underway, stress levels are immediately reduced and a steadier pace of life takes over.
Dust-off long neglected cards and board games for cosy onboard evening entertainment (though our boats all have TVs and DVD-players too!); Explore mile-upon-mile of traffic-free towpaths by foot or by bike (up to two bikes can be stored on the roof of the boat); Breathe in plenty of fresh air to aid a peaceful night’s sleep.

You can moor up in the centre of top destinations such as Bath, Birmingham, Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Chester; visit significant historic sites including the soaring majesty of the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct; or enjoy world class attractions - Alton Towers, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Thermae Spa in Bath.
The greener way
A boating holiday is estimated to be 20 times better for the planet than spending two hours flying to a holiday overseas and as soon as you swap your car for a boat, you’ll be using a third of the fuel.
Pubs galore!
With hundreds of waterside pubs, a watering hole is never far away, many of them historic rural locals.
Watch out for wildlife
Waterways provide homes for large numbers of birds, plants and animals, including many protected species - the water vole, otter and kingfisher, so there’s always something special to look out for.
Electrical appliances
Unlike at home, there is a limit to the power that is available on a boat. Anglo Welsh boats have a device called an “Inverter”, which converts the power from the onboard batteries into a 240-volt supply. Power is measured in watts. For example, a standard household light bulb uses 60 watts and a kettle can be as much as 3000 watts. The inverters have a power limitation of 1000 watts, which excludes many domestic electrical appliances. Every domestic electrical appliance has a label on it indicating its power consumption, so, anything above 1000 watts is not permitted. Usually, the following are more than 1000 watts and therefore are not permitted: Kettles; irons; hairdryers; vacuum cleaners; any form of heater. Usually, the following items are less than 1000 watts and therefore can be permitted: Cool-boxes; hair straighteners; curling tongs; blenders; phone and computer chargers. The golden rules: • If the appliance is above 1000 watts then don’t bring it onto the boat. Anglo Welsh Brochure 2016.indd 5
Finally, remember that it’s impossible to guarantee that a battery powered supply system will be able to provide a constant supply of power to any electrical device, including and importantly, medical appliances. This is because the batteries are charged when the engine is running; as soon as the engine is turned off, then the electrics will start to run the battery down quite quickly.
The Narrowboat Experience
Your canal boat becomes your floating hotel room, giving you the chance to stay where you choose, from vibrant city centres to remote rural backwaters. Most mooring sites are free, so you stay somewhere different every night!
• No electrical appliance should be left plugged in unattended. • Only use one appliance at a time. • Wherever possible, run the engine whilst using the appliance so that you are charging the batteries.
If you need to bring an electrical medical appliance with you on holiday, Talk to us first.
Enjoy the comforts of home
Today’s canal boats are fully equipped with all the essential mod cons: fully equipped kitchens; central heating; hot water; TV/DVD; showers and flushing toilets.
You can bring your pet with you
Up to two pets are welcome on all our boats, so they don’t have to miss out on the family holiday! Plus the first pet goes free.
Fair fuel costs!
All our boats start with a full tank of fuel - plenty to cover a steady two week cruise. You pay a fuel deposit when you book your holiday – this is £90 per week or more or £50 per short break. When you bring the boat back to us the balance of the deposit is refundable after deducting the fuel used. If you have used fuel in excess of the deposit, you will be asked to pay the difference.
Wi-Fi
Installing internet hubs on our boats in 2015 proved a popular move with our customers so we are rolling it out to the whole Anglo Welsh fleet in 2016* These hubs provide connection to the Internet from aboard the boat – signal permitting – and allow you to keep in touch whilst on holiday. They come with a limited amount of download so they are no substitute for your home broadband; they work in a similar way to a smartphone so are at the mercy of signal strength, which of course depends on your location. Think of them more of a way to ‘check-in’ whilst you’re on holiday as opposed to being ‘fully connected’ After all, everyone deserves to get away from it all from time to time… *Boats cruising from Silsden and Sally Narrowboats from Bradford on Avon will NOT carry Wi-Fi

From fields and wildlife to fascinating urban landscapes with top attractions, you’ll see things differently from a canal boat. But it’s also an adventure, as you set off together – with family or friends - to explore the waterway ahead.

rom floating across the awesome Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to bobbing through Bath, your canal boat holiday can take you to some of Britain’s most beautiful cities and incredible World Heritage sites. Each of our bases offers a wide variety of destinations but we’ve listed nine of our most popular for inspiration. See pages 36-37 for recommended longer circuits and rings.
The ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford The beautiful city of Oxford is just a three-hour (four lock) cruise away from our Oxford base at Eynsham on the River Thames. Enjoy a short break in Oxford, using your canal boat as a base to explore all the City has to offer. Climb the 14th century Carfax Tower to take in a view of Oxford’s ‘dreaming spires’, see the witch in a bottle at the Pitt Rivers Museum, visit the remains of the Dodo at the University Museum of Natural History.
Historic Warwick Our base at Stockton on the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire offers a seven-hour (12 lock) journey to the lovely city of Warwick and the chance to visit its famous castle - said to host ‘Britain’s greatest medieval experience’.With a history dating back over a thousand years and rolling landscaped gardens to explore Warwick Castle is a fascinating place to visit.
Medieval Chester Our base at Bunbury on the Shropshire Union Canal in Cheshire is just seven hours (and nine locks) away from the historic City of Chester, making it a popular short break destination. Famous for its Medieval architecture and city walls, Chester also offers a vibrant market hall, an award winning zoo, busy racecourse, trendy bars, shopping malls and a huge variety of restaurants.
The bright lights of Birmingham Our base at Tardebigge is just 5 hours and no locks away from Birmingham. Central moorings are available in Gas Street Basin, right next to Brindley Place, giving you easy access to top attractions, including The Mailbox and Bullring shopping centres, the Sea Life Centre, Science Museum, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Jewellery Quarter, Ikon Gallery and the famous “Balti Triangle”! And if you’re feeling like a treat on the way home, you could stop off at the delicious canal side Cadbury World!

World Heritage City of Bath Bath makes a fantastic short break destination from our Bradford on Avon, City of Bath and Monkton Combe bases. The centre of this beautiful Georgian city, famous for its natural hot springs and Thermae Spa, stunning architecture, great shopping, bustling waterfront restaurants and Jane Austen Museum, is an eight-hour (seven lock) journey from the picturesque Cotswold town of Bradford on Avon.
Head for a theme park! Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park are close to canals accessible from our Great Haywood base, giving you the chance to swap the tranquillity of the canals for the thrills of a theme park for the day. Froghall on the Caldon Canal is just 20 hours (35 locks) from Great Haywood.
Visit Shakespeare’s Stratford
Our base at Wootton Wawen is a six-hour (17 lock) journey along the pretty Stratford Canal from Stratford upon Avon. Here you can moor on the River Avon close to the famous Swan Theatre with easy access to the town’s museums, shops, markets and restaurants.
The awesome World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres (126ft) high above the River Dee, is right next to our base at Trevor in North Wales. You may be travelling at just four miles an hour, but with not even a hand rail on the south side of the aqueduct to obscure your views of the breathtaking Dee Valley below, you will literally feel like you are floating above the earth!

Broadchurch star Matthew Gravelle was at the centre of the biggest whodunit since ‘who shot JR?' In 2015, the versatile Welsh actor took his wife and kids on a true-life fa mily adventure aboard an Anglo Welsh narrowboat in Wales. For a small country, Wales is actually – well, quite big – as we’re discovering on our epic journey form our home in Cardiff to a family weekend on the Llangollen Canal in Trevor, Mid-North Wales. We’ve both travelled around Wales quite a bit for work, and recently Mali has been spending a lot of time on the west coast filming the dark cop drama Hinterland. But this top corner of Wales remains an enigma to us, and we’re looking forward to getting to know it a bit better. We’ve got lots of adventures planned for our break aboard Anglo Welsh’s narrowboat as well as heroic amounts of eating and drinking along the way! We head for Llangollen, a handsome market town that’s thronging with visitors to the Fringe Festival, an offshoot of the famous International Eisteddfod. We’re heading for the Llangollen canal, built as part of the network of waterways to connect the coalfields and limestone quarries of Denbighshire to the Midlands. Its most notable feature is Thomas Telford’s Poncysyllte Aqueduct, the highest and longest in Britain, 984 feet in length and soaring 126 feet above the River Dee. We arrive at the Anglo Welsh Base at Trefor Basin and collect our boat, a traditional looking narrowboat called “Brenig”, resplendent in British Racing Green and Gold (odd since the speed limit is 4 mph!).

Holiday Diary The children scramble on and we get an hour of instruction from the nice man from Anglo Welsh on how to skipper the boat.

By the time we set off from our mooring, I know the theory; I just need to put it into practice! Crossing the Poncysyllte Aqueduct is easy, Telford thoughtfully built it in an arrow straight line and the cast iron walls are only just wide enough to pass through, so steering isn’t an issue. Instead I can take in the exhilarating views as we float serenely in mid-air. At the end of our first day, we moor up and feast on Llandegla trout, with broad beans and potatoes from my Dad’s garden. After supper we do old-fashioned stuff – play cards, draw pictures. As night falls, the children settle into their cabin and enjoy the best night’s sleep in ages. Its really cosy and comfortable place to sleep, like a stretched caravan except better insulated with its own solid fuel stove. A new day dawns and this driving lark seems much easier today. It gives us the opportunity to relax and spot nooks and corners that you don’t see from any road.

trip
e want your boat to be in tip top condition when you collect it, so it will be ready from 3pm in the afternoon on your holiday start date.
Before you set off, one of our instructors will take you through everything you need to know for your canal boat holiday - how to start the engine; fill up with water; steering; slow down; moor up; and work the locks. You will also be taken through the basics of canal etiquette – from which side to drive on (the middle), how to steer and work the locks to canal etiquette and the best places to moor-up and turn. There is a manual on board every boat if you need to check on anything and our engineering teams are always on hand – 24 hours a day - to help over the phone or come out to you if you need them. With your tuition complete, you will be ready to enjoy the perfect holiday afloat. We know you will find it both relaxing and revitalizing, with something new to see every minute and the chance to work as a team to work the locks, steer the boat and plan your next stop. It is a fun, exciting experience for all the family to enjoy.

Here are some useful points to bear in mind to help you prepare for your trip:
Going through locks Each lock takes about 20 minutes to go through. Some locks you operate yourself and others are operated by lock-keepers. There is no mystery to using locks – just a series of step-by-step tasks. A lock is simply a chamber with gates at either end. By emptying or filling that chamber with water, your boat can move up or down onto a new section of the waterway.
Mooring up Your boat will not be permitted to cruise at night so make sure you are moored by nightfall. Whilst you can choose where you stop for the night, use sign-posted visitor moorings wherever possible, and always moor to the towpath if you can. If you’d like to find out more about boat handling ahead of your holiday, you can download a free copy of the Canal & River Trust’s boater’s handbook from www.canalrivertrust.org.uk.

The choice is yours depending on how long you’ve got, how experienced you are, where you’d like to head for and what you’d like to do. Once you have a base in mind, have a look at the suggested route table on the following bases pages. This will give you an indication of how many hours cruising it will take for your chosen destinations, allowing you to plan your time. Refer to the key on each base page to help you plan your trip. All routes are suitable for all holidaymakers, whether a novice or an experienced cruiser, except the Bath to Bristol route where you’ll be cruising on a tidal river.

ur base at Wootton Wawen is in the top two booking bases every year and looking at its location you can see why! Perfectly sited for Birmingham, Stratford upon Avon, locks, aqueducts, culture, shopping – it’s got it all! Cruising to Stratford upon Avon is a firm favourite from Wootton, combining a lovely stretch of canal and the best that Shakespeare has to offer. Heading south on the Stratford-uponAvon Canal, you will cross the Edstone Aqueduct, at 475 feet (145 m), Edstone is the longest aqueduct in England.
Heading north from Wootton Wawen and you’ll be heading for the bright city lights of Birmingham. Whilst the shops and restaurants are fantastic, don’t miss the hidden gem of Birmingham’s history, only seen and truly appreciated from the canals. The Symphony Hall, The National Indoor Arena, The Sealife Centre, The Jewellery Quarter, Chinatown… something for everyone all in one place.

This awesome combination makes Stratford upon Avon one of the most popular Visitor destinations in the UK, but if you’re hungry for more, you can buy a licence and lock down onto the River Avon, cruising further southwards through idyllic countryside to Evesham and Tewkesbury.
This beautiful town, home of The Royal Shakespeare Company, set on the banks of the River Avon where you can moor up your Anglo Welsh ‘floating hotel’ right in the centre of town and soak up the history and culture of a bygone era….Once in a lifetime is just not enough! e have a large fleet of boats cruising from Bunbury, our base set within the heart of rural Cheshire, next to the well-known Bunbury Staircase Lock.
There’s a choice of short and long breaks, which will take in the glorious English countryside through Cheshire and Shropshire or even the delights of North Wales. Cruising north you’ll be heading for Chester – old enough to make your spine tingle, yet young enough in spirit to be effortlessly fashionable. Small enough to explore easily on foot, but big enough to be wonderfully cosmopolitan. They are big on river culture here, so you’ll find you’ll be catered for impeccably with a host of high quality bars and restaurants. And of course, you can always take your little monkeys to wonderful Chester Zoo! The near by Ice Cream Farm at Newton by Tattenhall is also

ll Anglo Welsh holidays are memorable, but this one might literally come highest on the list! And it represents the ‘Welsh’ part of our name…..
Trevor’s awesome Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, nicknamed the ‘Stream in the Sky’ for obvious reasons, carries the Llangollen canal 126ft high above the River Dee. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument; a Grade I Listed structure and was granted World Heritage status in June 2009, putting it on an equal footing with the Great Barrier Reef and Statue of Liberty! It towers above the heart of this breathtaking 18km long site, stretching from Gledrid Bridge near Rhoswiel in Wales, to the Horseshoe Falls, on the River Dee.

With delightful Llangollen town only a two hour cruise away, don’t miss out on a visit to The Steam Railway Centre. Navigate the Llangollen to experience one of the UK’s most stunning stretches of inland waterway. There are tunnels, lift bridges and not too many locks as you roll through the rolling plains, rich in wildlife. The Dee Valley with its little towns of Chirk and Corwen and Lake Bala, is a gateway of discovery to the hidden secrets of this fascinating area of North Wales.

our holiday starts in the small Yorkshire town of Silsden, which dates back to Saxon times, with its duck pond in the centre of the main street. Going west from Silsden, the canal passes through the typical Yorkshire stone built villages of Kildwick and Farnhill and on into a dense wooded area famous for its bluebells and deer. Through Bradley - a typical ‘mill village’ with cricket field and a very nice country pub. Then on to Skipton, the ‘Gateway to the Dales’ with a market four days a week, and a Farmers’ market once a month.
The canal continues through countryside to the delightful village of Gargrave, where it runs close to the river Aire. It is also the start of a flight of six locks, followed quickly by another six locks at Bank Newton, hailed by many as the most beautiful locks on the whole canal system. These take the canal up into the Dales with stunning views, until you reach the hamlet of East Marton, with its famous double arch bridge. From here, continue into the countryside to the three locks at Greenberfield, also in a very picturesque setting. These locks take the canal onto the summit, and through Salterforth, then to Foulridge, and the famous mile long tunnel (ask about the story of the swimming cow!!) If you have longer on the canal, and are feeling energetic, you can carry on through the Lancashire cotton
towns, over Burnley embankment and onto Wigan with its flight of 21 locks. If you decide to travel east from Silsden towards Leeds, then, along with swing bridges, you will encounter the famous Grade 1 listed ‘Bingley Five Rise’ locks, which take you down 60ft followed by ‘Bingley Three Rise’ which drop a mere 29ft. There are a few more locks before you reach Saltaire, IRISH SEA which is a World Heritage Site built by Sir Titus Salt for his mill workers. Here you can visit Salts Mill, which has an art gallery showing the work of David Hockney, a café and various other shops.

The Warwickshire Ring
A world famous ring that contrasts the quiet of the Avon with the locks of the Lickey Hills and achievable in a busy one week, cruising 9 hours per day from Wootton Wawen and Tardebigge (130 locks) or a comfortable two week cruise, cruising a leisurely 4.5 hours per day. (Remember, time spent on the River Avon costs an extra licence fee, which is payable on the river en route).
Originally opened in 1771 although last used 65 years ago the ring has recently undergone extensive renovation. The recently restored Droitwich canals link the Worcester & Birmingham canal with the River Severn, allowing this ring to be cruised once more after 70+ years. This route takes you through rural Worcestershire, passing through Droitwich Spa and historic Worcester. Suitable for midweek break or longer from Tardebigge, with 30 hours cruising and 117 locks.

With boats that sleep from 2 to 12 people comfortably, it’s up to you to decide how much space you need for your holiday. This symbol guide indicates the location of berths, bathrooms, storage and other facilities on board. Each layout has a weekly price band number and a short break price band letter which refer to the holiday prices on page 52. When a +2 is shown in the layout this means an extra two berths can be made up by converting the dining area to an extra double, or in some cases, two extra singles. If you are unsure of anything, as always, please call our booking team on 0117 3041122 for a ‘phone walk-round’ of the boat. Cruiser II Class - 6 + 2 Berth - Size: 65ft x 6ft 10 ins

Dayboats
O
ur day boats offer a great way to try canal boating and to get the hang of steering, mooring up and working the locks. All are equipped with the facilities you need for a day afloat, including a fridge and a toilet. Just bring your friends and family, food and drink and after some expert tuition you’re away! We have day boats at most of our bases and prices start from just £10 per person. Cruising hours during the season are from 9am to 4pm. All of our boats carry a maximum of ten people and are designed with indoor and outdoor seating – check each boat layout with the Booking Team as they are all slightly different.

Dayboats & Cottage
Day boat hire price guide - Max 10 persons per boat.
The four Dayboats at our Trevor base are very popular, offering a whole holiday experience packaged into one day! Set off for a return cruise to Chirk Bank and meander through A World Heritage site including the magnificent Poncysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts, two tunnels and a swing-bridge…The Poachers is a great pub to stop off at on the way with great food and a large play area for the children. Or take a trip on our Dayboat “Emma” form Tardebigge in the Midlands. You can get as far as Kings Norton Junction via the gorgeous towns of Hopwood and Alvechurch; navigate the three historic tunnels of Shortwood, Wast Hill & Tardebigge – there are no locks or swing bridges but its an action packed cruise and you can almost guarantee a sighting of Herons and Kingfishers so don’t forget your cameras! Emma is also available to hire for a two-berth overnight cruise, which could take you into Birmingham and back – ask the Booking Team for details. We can’t fit all the options in, so lastly why not try “Daphne” or “Abi” form Great Haywood? Located at the crossroads of canals, this location offers loads of options for a days cruising: Rugeley return with the glorious Shugborough Hall and Cannock Chase; Stafford return is the wildlife and nature lovers ideal cruise; Sandon return offers a great flexibility with a plethora of lovely village pubs dotting the banks on the canal.
Page 49
There are so many options and this is becoming such a popular way to try out Narrowboating without committing to a full-blown holiday. Cut your teeth on a Dayboat and then move on up to the larger overnight boats – you’ll be hooked form the minute you step aboard!

This season we had the pleasure of Matthew Gravelle and his Wife Mali Harries who have made numerous on-screen appearances as a ‘couple’ but joined us in real life with their delightful children on an action packed holiday from our Welsh base at Trevor.

The family were also kind enough to provide our annual “Holiday Diary” on pages 8&9 of this brochure and we look forward to welcoming them back to Anglo Welsh as soon as possible!

arely an hour of TV goes by without a narrowboat cruising along in a backdrop, or being used as a setting – and that’s great news for our industry and great news for the canals. It’s probably fair to say that a lot of the renewed interest in Narrowboating can be attributed to the delightful Timothy West and Prunella Scales series about revisiting their times on the canals.
So we were delighted to be asked to provide boats for the second series of Tim & Pru’s “Great Canal Journeys” and it was even more successful than the first, being screened on primetime TV and being repeated all over the place! John Sargent has also appeared in a second series of “Barging Around Britain” one-time Strictly contestant The new ITV series sees Sergeant dig into the history and stories of the canals across the country. “It’s an astonishing thing to have the canals still there and able to use them,” says Sergeant. “There’s no real equivalent. If all the steam trains were still working and you could go by steam all over Britain, then yes. But we can actually do that with canals.” We also provided the boat for the infamous BBC Four programme “All Aboard! The Canal Trip” which was a two-hour, real-time boat journey down the Kennet and Avon Canal, using an uninterrupted single shot….it wasn’t everyone’s idea of great TV (although it doubled the usual BBC 4 viewers figures!) but it did show – in great detail – what a beautiful canal it is and how peaceful Narrowboating can be.
V! As seen on T
So we are very proud to have been the ‘Company of Choice’ when the TV Producers have created these primetime programmes and we hope to be working with them a lot more in the future.
As one of our customers noted “Well we thought anything Tim & Pru can do….” Now it’s your turn to follow in their footsteps!

The programmes proved that Narrowboating is for everyone and that operating one is more an art than a science. They also brought all the fun and excitement into our homes and allowed us all to enjoy their remarkable cruises aboard (amongst others) Anglo Welsh’s boats.

YOUR SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED TO VALIDATE INSURANCE WHILST OUT ON THE BOAT. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CRUISE WITHOUT GIVING THIS SIGNED ACCEPTANCE OF OUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS
08/09/2015 11:14
Terms and conditions Please read these terms and conditions carefully when you book a holiday with us you are entering into a contract, which binds us in various ways. You are strongly advised to ensure you have adequate personal travel insurance, which should also cover any of your potential liabilities in this agreement. 1. Definitions.“The Company” means Anglo Welsh Ltd trading as Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays.“The Hirer” means the designated Skipper named on the Handover Certificate. Where there is more than one Hirer, they shall be individually responsible and liable under this agreement. 2. Booking Agreement. A booking is a legally binding contract. Submission of a booking form is an offer by the Hirer and an agreement to the Company’s Terms and Conditions. The booking Agreement is offered only if and when the Company issues a written boat hire confirmation. The entire contract between the Company and the hirer is contained in these conditions, the booking form and the boat handover certificate. No representations, terms, warranty or condition expressed or implied shall be deemed to be or have been made or agreed or imported by reference to any other by writing, advertisement or conversation. No Agent or representative of the Company has any right to alter or vary or waive any of these conditions. Nor is any such person authorised to undertake any liability whatsoever on behalf of the company. Where more than one boat is booked on the same booking form each boat shall be deemed to the subject of a separate contract. 3. Group Bookings, Age Limits and Unsuitable Hirers. The Hirer must be aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that whenever the boat is driven by a person aged under 18, that they will at all times be under the close supervision of a competent person aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that two able body people aged 18 years or older will be aboard the boat, taking responsibility of boat and crew at all times. The Hirer must provide on the booking form all details of all persons in their party. On arrival at the base, the boat handover certificate must be completed in full. The company reserves the right to cancel any booking made in contravention of either of the above conditions, on or before the start date and any monies paid to the company shall be forfeit. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boats to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of infirmity, ill health, disability, or who have failed to demonstrate a reasonable standard of competence following appropriate instruction in boat handling. In this event, the company will refund all monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boat to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of suspected influence of alcohol or drugs. In this event, the company will not refund any monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may repossess the boat at any time if in the opinion of the company, the Hirer is unsuitable for the above reasons, or, if the Hirer is not behaving responsibly, or if the boat or any persons are at risk. In this event, the Hirer shall remain liable to pay the full hire price and no refund will be given. Anglo Welsh are one of the few operators who will entertain celebratory parties. Sadly, the actions of the few have repercussions on the many. Therefore, any booking may be required to place a pre-authorised deposit of £250 per boat. All or a portion of this amount may be retained in the event of any transgressions to our Terms and Conditions. In the event of a party or boat declining to register this deposit upon request, the boat will not be handed over to the customer and all monies paid by the customer for the holiday shall be forfeit. Additional deposits of up to £100 per person may be required at the discretion of Anglo Welsh Ltd. For certain parties, the deposit will be returned to you when you have finished your holiday, providing the boat and its equipment is returned on time, undamaged, clean and tidy, with no third party claim. 4. Cancellations & Changes. The agreement including the payment terms is a legally binding contract and may not be cancelled or amended except as provided in the conditions. Should the Hirer wish to cancel or amend the booking, they must advise the company immediately by telephone and at the same time send written confirmation by Recorded Delivery post. The company reserves the right to levy an administration charge of £35 for any alteration to a booking made by the Hirer after it has issued a booking confirmation. In the event of a cancellation, the deposit will be forfeited and the Hirer will pay the balance on the due date. The company may, at its discretion, waive the balance fee if the company successfully re-lets the boat for the whole of the hire period. 5. Hire Period, Collection and Return of the Boat. The hire period is as shown on the booking confirmation sheet. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE AT THE BASE IN TIME TO COLLECT YOUR BOAT. THE ‘WINDOW’ FOR ARRIVAL IS 14.00 - 16.00. YOU MUST ARRANGE TO ARRIVE AT THE BASE WITHIN THIS ‘WINDOW’. YOU MUST ARRIVE AT THE BASE IN TIME TO BOARD YOUR BOAT AND HAVE PROPER INSTRUCTION BEFORE YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO CRUISE. Check in for holidays is from 14.00. Boats are available from 15.00. In order to cruise on the first day of your holiday, you must arrive at the base before 16.00. If you arrive after 16.00 you may not have a “boat handover” and you will not be able to cruise the boat. All bases are closed from 17.00 and you will not be able to gain access. Before departure, the company will give the Hirer such instructions and trials as the company sees fit, and requires the Hirer to check and sign for contents, inventory and Boat Acceptance. In the event that the
Anglo Welsh Brochure 2016.indd 54
boat is unavailable because of circumstances beyond the company’s control, the company may substitute a boat of similar accommodation, but if no such boat is available, the company shall refund any payments made but shall not otherwise be liable and the contract shall be discharged. The boat shall be returned to the company’s hire base no later than 9am on the morning of the end date. The boat shall be vacated and left in a clean and tidy condition by 9.30 am on the morning of the end date. The boat may not be returned to the base early except by prior arrangement in writing with Anglo Welsh’s Head Office. Hirers are responsible for ensuring their cruising schedule allows them ample time to return to the base by the stated time. Breach of this condition will incur a minimum additional charge of £50 per hour or part thereof. In addition, the Hirer will be liable for any extra costs incurred by the company as a result of the boat not being ready for the next Hirer. Where the company has to recover a boat and return it to the base, the Hirer shall be liable for all costs incurred.
6. Prices and Payment. All prices stated are inclusive of V.A.T. and are subject to any changes in V.A.T. rate prior to the final payment being made. 7. Insurance. The boats, their equipment and inventory are insured by the company against public liability risks. The company’s insurance does not cover personal accidents or loss or damage to personal effects. Hirers and their crews are strongly advised to take out their own personal insurance cover. Accidental damage waiver does not cover damage arising from speeding, contact with a lock sill causing damage to the rudder, skeg or stern gear, TV aerials, chimneys, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, or to other boats and or property, loss or damage of boat inventory and equipment. The late return of a boat or return of the boat in an unclean condition is not covered by the Accidental damage waiver. The Hirer will indemnify the company against all costs, damage, expenses, liability and claims howsoever arising from the negligence, neglect or default of the Hirer to the extent that they are not covered by the company’s policy. 8. Obeying the Rules of the Waterways. The Hirer agrees to comply with the following rules at all times for the Health & Safety of the persons on the boat and other persons and the boat and its property: - The boat may not tow nor may it be allowed to be towed by another craft, except under professional assistance in the event of an emergency. Not to cruise between sunset and sunrise. The boat is only equipped to cruise during daylight hours. To observe all speed limits. Not to race or to cruise at a speed which causes a wash, or disturbs or inconveniences other waterway users. Not to take nor allow to be carried on the boat, any dinghies, canoes, inflatables, portable heaters, barbecues of any kind, bicycles, vehicles, lighting equipment, TV sets, any electrical appliances (save razors), inflammable liquids or substances, gas cylinders, car batteries, firearms or any other items which might cause dangers or hazards. Not to use the boat for business purposes. Not to allow on the boat at any time more persons than the maximum number of berths. Not to have or to carry live fishing bait on the boat. At all times to observe all bye laws, navigational limits, or instructions and advice of Canal & River Trust or any other navigational authorities, the company and their respective officers and employees. The company reserves the right at its discretion, without liability, to restrict cruising areas or routes in light of prevailing conditions. 9. Accidents. The Hirer is in charge of the boat and is responsible for its safe navigation and return. In the event of an accident the hirer must: -Get full details of all other persons involved as well as relevant boat names and registrations. The Hirer must inform the company immediately with full details. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ADMIT OR ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON ABOARD THE BOAT TO ADMIT ANY LIABILITY TO ANY OTHER PERSON. Not have repairs carried out without the company’s express permission. At all times obtain and follow the company’s instructions. In the event that the company’s insurance cover is prejudiced or invalidated by any failure on the part of the Hirer to comply with the provisions of this condition, the Hirer shall indemnify the company in respect of liability claims, loss, damage or expenses incurred. The Hirer shall be responsible for getting the boat off mud banks or other grounding and for removal of weeds, rope and other matter from propellers. The Hirer is responsible for and shall indemnify the company against any claim or charge made by any Navigation Authority for damage to waterway property or loss of water. 10. Repairs and Breakdowns. The Hirer shall notify the company in the event of breakdown, damage, theft or loss and shall provide full details and shall comply with all company instructions. The Hirer must not allow any repairs, adjustment or service without the company’s prior approval. The Hirer shall have no claim on the company as a result of breakdown or the failures of the boat and its equipment, or for any delays caused by repairs to the boat. 11. Car parking & Hirer’s Personal Property. Free parking is provided for customers by arrangement, although at certain times of the year spaces are limited. The Hirer agrees to comply with the Company’s instructions on car parking. THE COMPANY ACCEPTS NO LIABILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE TO VEHICLES OR THE CONTENTS THEREIN. The Hirer is particularly advised not to leave valuables or ready portable items in cars. The Hirer is strongly recommended to take out Personal Holiday Insurance. 12. Fuel. The boat is handed over ready fuelled but the cost of hire does not include the fuel consumed. A fuel deposit is payable 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. At the end of your holiday period the boat must be refuelled and any difference to the deposit paid will be refunded or charged. The Boat Owner or the Company may make a fuel surcharge if there is any material increase of diesel or gas prices or
duty. Whilst water supply and moorings on the canals are normally free of charge, any costs incurred are the responsibility of the Hirer. Where pump-outs are required to toilet tanks, the cost is the responsibility of the Hirer unless carried out at the Company’s base. 13. Pets. You are normally allowed to bring your cat or dog with you, but you must tell us at the time of making your booking. YOU MUST BRING YOUR PET BLANKET OR BASKET WITH YOU AS PETS ARE ONLY ALLOWED ON THE CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY THEY LIE ON THE BEDDING OR CHAIRS. Your pet must not be left unattended on the boat. Pets are not covered under the company’s insurance policy and the Hirer is liable for any costs incurred by extra cleaning and any delays incurred as a cause. Registered Assistance Dogs will be accepted free of charge although all conditions apply. 14. Complaints. The Hirer will check the boat and its equipment fully, immediately after taking possession of the boat. Any shortcomings must be brought to the company’s attention BEFORE the boat leaves the base. The Hirer shall sign a Boat Acceptance form before departure and thereafter the Hirer is completely responsible for the boat its equipment and its operation until it is handed back to the company at the end of the hire. Any shortcomings subsequently discovered shall immediately be noticed to the company by telephone in order to give the company the opportunity to take necessary remedial action. The company shall not be liable in respect of any matter not so noticed immediately. 15. Exemption. The company shall not be liable for any matters arising from any cause beyond the company’s reasonable control, or not due to the company’s negligence or wilful default including (without limitation) death or personal injury of Hirers their crew and passengers, loss or damage to property, non-fulfillment or interruption of the booking or breakdown delays, mechanical problems, defects, damage, restrictions or obstructions, repairs or damage to waterways, non availability of routes, navigational works, storms, floods, droughts, ice, or in respect of any consequential loss, damage, injury, expense or claim. 16. Brochure & Website. The brochure and website is intended as a general guide and the company will not be liable in the event of any differences in the boat supplied and reserves the right to make modifications. IF THE HIRER’S PARTY INCLUDES ANY INFIRM PERSONS, THE HIRER MUST MAKE RELEVANT ENQUIRIES AT TIME OF BOOKING. Damage Waiver The Damage Waiver avoids the requirement for a damage deposit payment. There are certain exclusions: •
Return of the boat late
•
Return of the boat in an unclean condition
•
Damage arising from negligence, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, its inventory, third party property, the canal and its structures.
•
Damage to the rudder, skeg or transmission due to contact with a lock sill
•
Excessive speeding in the boat – the limit is 4m.p.h.
In the event of the above, the Hirer will be liable for all additional costs incurred above and beyond the Damage Waiver. Cancellation Protection Scheme A contract exists once a deposit has been paid and a booking has been confirmed, and you are liable for the whole cost of the holiday even if you are unable to take your holiday. Anglo Welsh Ltd. has created a Cancellation Protection Scheme (CPS) to offer you protection against this liability in certain circumstances. Where any of the qualifying circumstances are met, all hire monies will be repaid in full less an administration fee of £35 and the Hirer will be absolved from any balancing hire payment. The decision of Anglo Welsh Ltd. is final. CPS only covers complete cancellation prior to the start of the holiday. It does not give a pro rata refund if one or more persons are unable to take the holiday. Cover is only provided for those persons named on the booking form. Any claim must be supported by documentary evidence. Any claim must be made at the earliest opportunity by telephone and backed up in written form via Recorded Delivery Mail. Qualifying circumstances include: - Death, injury, illness, pregnancy complications or confinement immediately prior to holiday commencement (certified in all cases by a qualified registered Medical Practitioner in writing) The above circumstances would also apply to a near relative (husband, wife, father, mother, parent-in-law, sister, brother, child) or a close business associate. Jury Witness service in a court of law. Fire, storm, flood, subsidence or malicious damage making the Hirer’s home uninhabitable Police requiring the Hirer’s presence following burglary at home or place of business. Cancelled orders in respect of U.K. Police and Military Personnel.

You’ll need to pay the balance of your invoice eight weeks before your holiday starts. You can either pay by cheque or credit/debit card. If you would like to pay by cheque, please make cheques payable to ‘Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays’.
Think of them more of a way to ‘check-in’ whilst you’re on holiday as opposed to being ‘fully connected’ After all, everyone deserves to get away from it all from time to time…
*Boats cruising from Silsden and Sally Narrowboats from Bradford on Avon will NOT carry Wi-Fi
