& Wellness Guide With summer ( and oh, what a summer it was ) firmly behind us, we now prepare for the fall and winter seasons in Western New York. As the days get shorter and, for many of us, our activity levels decrease, we, at the new Angola Pennysaver, have compiled in the following pages a special section entitled ‘ Health & Wellness .’We are promoting businesses and organizations and publishing insightful articles all pertaining to the theme of Health & Wellness. Advertisements and topics range from medical specialties, nutritional guidance, beauty and cosmetic, weight loss, exercise and fitness to maintaining physical, emotional and mental well-being. We are fortunate to have in our local neighborhoods a wealth of medical specialists as well as being the home to some of our area’s foremost health facilities. We are recognizing them as a means to help all of us in our community to live healthier and more productive lives. As an aside, we are only days away from launching our newly revised website. It will be more than just a website, but rather a community portal, where people can not only view local news, events, etc., but also share information by contributing articles, blogs, photos and videos of things happening in our community. When we purchased the Angola Pennysaver back in February, it was our goal and commitment to provide both a quality newspaper as well as a dynamic electronic product. We hope that you, our readers and our advertisers, are happy with the way we have transformed the paper; we trust that you will be pleased with our new community portal as well. So enjoy this special center spread section. As we transition into cooler weather, we wish all of you good ‘Health & Wellness.’

Tips On Avoiding Weight-Loss Scams Understanding Atrial Fibrillation And Stroke Risk by N. A. Mark Estes, III, M.D.

(NAPS)—There’s an alarming gap in knowledge about a common heart condition called atrial fibrillation, or AFib. By closing the gap and arming people with what they need to know, we could prevent disabling—and even deadly—strokes; perhaps thousands of strokes each year. Work recently done at the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to identify gaps in AFib knowledge and treatment suggests that about half of the estimated 2.7 million Americans who have AFib have not been properly educated about their stroke risk. The gap? We know that people who have AFib are at higher risk of stroke than people who do not have the condition, yet this information (and resulting proven prevention) isn’t trickling to the people who need it most. What AFib Is - AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that occurs when the heart’s two upper chambers beat erratically, causing the chambers to pump blood rapidly, unevenly and inefficiently. Blood can pool and clot in the chambers, increasing the risk of stroke. It’s associated with a fivefold increased risk of stroke and a greater likelihood that the stroke will lead to significant disability—even death. Identifying Challenges - A survey by Synovate, Inc. for the American Heart Association found that 90 percent of patients get AFib information from their doctors. Of the AFib patients surveyed, half thought they were at risk for stroke; 25 percent claimed they were not at risk; and the rest didn’t know. The survey also found only twothirds of patients recalled that their health care provider talked with them about their elevated stroke risk. Among those who talked with their doctors, 21 percent said they were told they have no stroke risk. Connecting People and Information - There are several proven ways to reduce the AFibassociated stroke risk. A healthy lifestyle and maintaining an ideal body weight through exercise and diet can prevent high blood pressure and diabetes that predispose an individual to AFib. For individuals who already have AFib, new and effective medications can thin the blood to prevent the clotting associated with stroke. Despite the substantial benefits that come from taking these medications, many people don’t receive or don’t take them. One of the hurdles could be that blood thinners have an undeserved reputation as problematic. It’s true that one popular blood thinner, called warfarin, requires monitoring to adjust the dosing; newer medications, however, don’t. In addition, some physicians and patients tend to overestimate the risk of bleeding complications from these medications. Your Lifesaving Assignment - If you have AFib, make an appointment with your doctor’s office. With today’s health care system, you might have the bulk of your AFib conversation with your doctor’s nurse practitioner or physician assistant. These people are often charged with taking more time with patients to answer questions and educate. Learn all you can about the condition. You’ll find credible and extensive AFib information from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association at www. heart.org/afib. The solution to closing this gap is simple communication. We have to start talking about AFib and stroke. At a time when the economy is in turmoil and funding is scarce, talking doesn’t cost a dime. • Dr. Estes is a professor of medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine and Director, New England Cardiac Arrhythmia Center, Tufts Medical Center, Boston. There are several proven ways to reduce atrial fibrillation associated stroke risk.

(NAPS)—Often, those looking for a quick fix when trying to lose weight can end up losing money— and possibly their health. While many weight-loss products claim there is an easy way to shed pounds, it’s rare that these products live up to their claims. Even worse, they can cause serious harm and even kill you. Tainted Weight-Loss Products Pose a Risk The FDA has found numerous weight-loss products labeled as “dietary supplements” that are tainted with hidden prescription drugs and other harmful ingredients. Some products contain dangerous concoctions of unlisted ingredients including stimulant diet drugs, controlled substances and drugs that were removed from the market for safety reasons. Such products can carry significant risks to unsuspecting consumers. Tainted products come in many forms including “slimming” capsules, coffees or teas. They often promise drastic and immediate weight loss and claim to be “all natural” with “no side effects.” Consumers should be especially wary of weight-loss products labeled in foreign languages. The FDA has received numerous reports of serious injuries associated with tainted weight- loss products, including stroke, kidney failure and death. Many of these products are imported and sold through the Internet, but some can also be found on store shelves. Watch For Bogus Claims There is no magic bullet for losing weight. Consumers should beware of products that promise quick fixes and amazing results. Learn to recognize the false claims that are often used in weight-loss scams. Be on the lookout for claims, including: • “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days” • “Permanent or guaranteed weight loss” • “Lose weight without diet or exercise” • “Eat all you want and lose weight” • “Takes weight off quickly— and keeps it from coming back” • “Lose weight while you sleep” • “Money-back guarantee.” If you have questions about weight-loss products, check with your health care professional before using them. To report illnesses or injuries believed to be related to a weight-loss product, call (800) FDA-1088 or visit FDA online at www.fda.gov/safety/MedWatch. For more information on how to spot health fraud scams, visit www.fda.gov/ healthfraud. (NAPS)—There’s welcome news for parents who have yet to have a discussion with their son or daughter about underage drinking. There’s a free program that’s designed to help parents begin the conversation and maintain an ongoing dialogue with their kids. According to a recent study, 67 percent of parents feel that they have influence on their teens’ decisions about underage drinking and they think their teens listen to what they have to say. Additionally, the parenting poll revealed that parents who’ve already talked to their teens about underage drinking this back-to-school season believe they’re getting through to their kids, with 88 percent saying their teens were receptive. The survey was conducted by Impulse Research for Anheuser-Busch. A Program to Help Parents First launched more than 20 years ago, Family Talk was revamped in 2011 and now focuses on parenting stages—teacher, facilitator and coach—that help parents use and adapt their influence to help prevent underage drinking as their children grow and mature. The program was recently renovated and expanded with help from certified parent coach MJ Corcoran to be a comprehensive resource for parents of kids of all ages. The program guide, which can be downloaded for free from the program’s Facebook page, offers parents a number of tips for having more meaningful conversations with their children about drinking, including: • Asking open-ended questions, such as “If there’s drinking at the party, what will you do?” or “What do you think about kids who drink?” • Listening with an open mind. In other words, stay focused on what your child is saying right then, not on what he or she has said in the past, or what parents think their child should be saying. • Setting consistent, clear boundaries. In addition to downloading the guide, when visiting the Facebook page, parents can interact with a parent-coach expert and other parents to share tips and advice on handling real-world situations. Maintaining a Dialogue “Our Family Talk About Drinking program is designed to help parents begin the conversation and maintain an ongoing dialogue, whether their child is in elementary, middle or high school, or even headed to college,” said Kathy Casso, vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility for Anheuser-Busch. To learn more, visit www.facebook.com/ABFamilyTalk. When discussing drinking, parents should ask open-ended questions, such as “If there’s drinking at the party, what will you do?” Note to Editors: The online poll was conducted in July 2012 with a sample of 1,022 U.S. parents (men and women) with teenagers enrolled in high school or college. Poll participants were selected to closely match U.S. population demographics. The overall sampling error rate for this poll is +/- 3 percent at the 95 percent level of confidence.

KRISTEN BAUER, PTA Go With The Grain For Your Good Health (NAPS)—Here’s food for thought: According to the USDA MyPlate healthy eating recommendations, it’s a good idea to “Make at Least Half Your Grains Whole,” and a great way to do so is with 100 percent whole-grain, U.S.-grown brown and wild rice. Consider these facts: • A half cup of brown or wild rice equals one of three recommended daily wholegrain servings. • Wild rice provides many nutrients, protein and fiber, it’s fat free, low in sodium and has a delicious nutty flavor and chewy texture. • Both brown and wild rice add texture, crunch and color to any dish. Recent research suggests that eating rice helps improve diet and manage weight and other risk factors for disease. Rice eaters consume a lower percentage of calories from fat and saturated fat compared to those who do not eat rice.

Chiropractic Care…A Healthy Option

According to WHO (World Health Organization), the definition of health is not limited

to the absence of disease or pain but also incorporates physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Chiropractors work with patients to not only alleviate their pain but also to help them live a healthy lifestyle. Chiropractic care helps to eliminate pain and improve body function by removing nerve irritation. When nerves become irritated due to an injury, misalignment, weakness and/or poor posture, patients may feel symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, headaches and muscle spasms. Chiropractors provide treatment for conditions such as back pain, neck pain, pinched nerves, headaches, migraines, sciatica, arthritic pain, hip and leg pain, arm and shoulder pain, and sports related injuries. In order to alleviate and/or correct these problems, a variety of treatments may be implemented including adjustments, soft tissue techniques, modalities, nutritional counseling, and exercise programs. The goal is to not only alleviate or eliminate painful and irritating symptoms, but also to correct the source of the problem, therefore reducing the risk of experiencing these symptoms in the future Chiropractic care often improves function and quality of life…two ingredients of a healthy lifestyle. Pump Up Your Heart Health (NAPS)—One in three adults in the United States—80 million people—has some form of heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular condition, but you can reduce your risk of these disorders. Researchers with the Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Program, a nationwide network of 37 academic research partners funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to find ways to keep people healthy, offer the following tips. “Eat high-quality carbohydrates and fats,” advises Tom Keyserling, M.D., M.P.H., researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill PRC. Dr. Keyserling says the latest public health research indicates that for heart health, people should pay attention to the quality, not just the quantity, of fats and carbohydrates they eat. “High-quality carbs include whole grains instead of refined grains, whole wheat bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of white rice and, in general, nonstarchy fruits and vegetables, such as citrus and broccoli,” he says. “And choose nuts, fish, and vegetable oils for their high-quality polyunsaturated fat.” He is researching how well the new dietary findings work to improve heart health. “One key element of heart health is physical activity, which helps people control their weight and blood pressure,” says Tracy Battaglia, M.D., M.P.H., of the Boston University PRC. “High blood pressure is a critical risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It’s important to keep your blood pressure less than 140/90, and less than 120/80 is considered normal.” She is investigating strategies to connect public housing residents, who often have insufficient health insurance, with health care services. Reducing the amount of salt you eat can help reduce blood pressure, adds Alwyn Cohall, M.D., of the Columbia University PRC. “It’s not so much what you add to your food with the saltshaker, but what’s already in your food,” he says. “Processed food is the leading culprit. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.” Dr. Cohall is researching strategies for lowering blood pressure in New York’s Harlem community, which is largely African American—a population more likely to have high blood pressure than the white population. Dr. Cohall also recommends not smoking, limiting alcohol, and taking medications as prescribed to control blood pressure. “High blood pressure may have no symptoms,” he says. “The unfortunate first warning sign may be stroke or heart attack. Do You Suffer From Vertigo?

Do you experience a spinning sensation that lasts for a number of seconds when you roll over in bed, get out of bed, when you bend down to put on your shoes, or when you tip your head back to look upward? If so, then you may have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), also known as positional vertigo. Patients who have positional vertigo may benefit by treatment known as the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). The procedure takes only a few minutes, and studies have shown that it is effective about 80% of the time in completely resolving positional vertigo.

The cost of CRP is only $20 If you would like to schedule a CRP diagnostic/treatment session, call our office at

627-7759

For more information about positional vertigo or other services we offer, please visit our website. All fees are posted on our website.

To Treat Heal and Serve

(NAPS)—Are you looking for a simple way to lead a healthier life? Skip the fad diets and trendy health fixes and focus on drinking enough water every day. Several health organizations recommend drinking eight 8-ounce glasses a day to help your body run more efficiently. When you consider that your blood is 92 percent water and your brain and muscles are 75 percent water, it only makes sense that you need to stay hydrated. Here are some reasons why drinking water will have you feeling and looking better, while also making you healthier. • Nature’s energy drink. It’s easy to down an energy drink or pop some vitamins when you’re feeling sluggish. However, water balances your electrolytes, controls your blood pressure, cleans the toxins from your kidneys and gives you more energy by helping your blood maintain a healthy volume. Proper hydration also regulates your body temperature and can help prevent heat stroke or hypothermia. • Improve your moves with water. If you ache more than usual after a workout, you may need to up your water intake. Water acts as a natural shock absorber for your organs and helps lubricate your joints. Proper hydration also improves concentration and reaction time and helps you burn more calories during a workout. • Natural boost for dieters. It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger pangs and to combat thirst with food instead of water. Before grabbing a snack or an extra helping, try drinking water between meals or a half hour before meals. An extra glass of water will keep your cravings in check while also helping to reduce fat deposits in your body. • Beauty is more than skin deep. If your skin is feeling dry and moisturizers aren’t doing the trick, consider drinking more water. Water filters through your other organs first, reaching the skin last. So if your other organs aren’t hydrated enough, your skin will pay the price. Your skin repays hydration by being smoother, softer, more supple and healthier. • Improving water in your home. If you skip drinking water at home because you dislike the taste, try a water filter for high-quality drinking water. When looking for filtration products such as water softeners, water filtration systems and water purification systems, you may want to consult water treatment experts such as Culligan, a company that has a long history of providing whole-house water treatment and softener solutions for the home. Culligan has dealerships nationwide, and each dealer is a local expert in his or her area because water varies across cities and regions. Though water quality varies across the nation, expert opinions do not. Several health organizations—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Heart Association and the Water Quality Association—have all agreed for many years that eight 8-ounce glasses a day are optimal for your health. For more information, visit www.culligan.com.

Every cell in your body is mostly comprised of water. That’s one reason it’s so important to drink plenty of it.

Natural Remedies For An Active Lifestyle (NAPS)—Being active is critical for staying healthy—so it’s a good thing exerciserelated aches and pains, sore muscles, and foot and leg cramps don’t have to put a damper on the activities that people love. Thankfully, there are many safe and natural remedies to keep pain at bay. Soft-tissue pain often benefits from rest, ice, compression and elevation. While rest gives your body time to heal, ice is handy for reducing swelling and dulling pain in sore spots. Be sure to wrap ice in a towel to prevent skin damage and aim to ice the injured area for about 20 minutes an hour or as needed, for one to two days. Gentle compression may help to keep swelling in check, while elevation can also reduce it. Injured ligaments and tendons respond well to increased blood flow, so moving and working with a physical therapist may help you return to pain-free workouts faster. Applying gentle heat can improve circulation to make achy muscles feel better, and a warm shower or massage can soothe sore muscles. Remember, if you are ever in doubt about your injury, check with your doctor. Still competing professionally after 45 years, 70-year-old NASCAR driver Morgan Shepherd keeps in shape by being active every day and looking after his health naturally. For Shepherd, the keys to staying healthy are choosing a fun activity, eating well and staying hydrated. “Some people like running but I prefer to get my running done on roller skates,” says Shepherd. “I get a really good workout, plus I hydrate with plenty of water, before, during and after a skate.” When you need more than rest, ice or heat but don’t like the side effects of stronger pain medicines, all-natural homeopathic products offer safe, effective solutions for aches and pains. For information on Hyland’s homeopathic recovery products, such as Muscle Therapy Gel with Arnica, Arnica 30x, Leg Cramps, Leg Cramps PM, and Bioplasma Sport, visit www.hylands.com. All the products are available nationally in Whole Foods Market, Vitamin Shoppe and other natural food stores, grocery stores, supercenters and pharmacies. A community of active adults can be found at www.facebook.com/HylandsFitTalk. Choose a fun activity to help yourself stay healthy. Note to Editors: These statements are based upon traditional homeopathic practice. They have not been reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration.

Keeping Sports Safe Is A Win-Win (NAPS)—Playing sports can be a winning way for kids to get healthy exercise and wholesome fun. The safest way to score this worthy goal, however, may be to first learn how to prevent sports-related injuries. Musculoskeletal sports injuries can range from a sprain or strain to a fracture or dislocation. Some injuries are from accidents, and others can result from poor training practices or improper gear. Young athletes can reduce the chance of muscle strain or other injury during sports by making warm-ups, such as stretching and light jogging, and cooldowns part of their routine before and after participating in sports. The following tips from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), National Institutes of Health, can help keep sports safe for kids and prevent injuries. Whatever sport your youngster plays, he or she should always: • Warm up before playing • Drink plenty of fluids while playing • Rest when tired. If your child does get injured while playing sports, it’s important to treat the injury promptly to prevent further complications. Treat a sports injury right away with: Rest: Reduce or stop using the injured area for at least 48 hours. For a leg injury, your athlete may need to stay off of it completely. Ice: Put an ice pack on the injured area for 20 minutes at a time, four to eight times per day. Use a cold pack, ice bag or a plastic bag filled with crushed ice that has been wrapped in a towel. Compression: Ask your child’s doctor about elastic wraps, air casts, special boots or splints that can be used to compress an injured ankle, knee or wrist to reduce swelling. Elevation: Keep the injured area elevated above the level of the heart to help decrease swelling. Use a pillow to help elevate an injured limb. Get professional treatment if any injury is severe. An illustrated, bilingual (English/Spanish), comic-book style “fotonovela” teaches middle school kids how to avoid sports injuries. It features teen soccer player Ana, who sprains her knee during a pickup game at a family picnic. Ana and her family learn the best way to treat a sports injury and how to avoid any future injuries. This family-focused publication is a must-read for active kids, parents and coaches. To get a free copy of this bilingual publication, call toll free (877) 22-NIAMS (2264267) or order online at www.niams.nih.gov. A free, colorful pamphlet helps kids learn to avoid sports injuries.

Physical Therapy For A Better Quality Of Life (NAPS)—The next time you have a pain in the neck or back, your arthritis is acting up, you are recovering from surgery or any of the countless other conditions affecting your ability to move freely within your daily life, a physical therapist can probably help. Physical therapists can even help fight complications from diabetes, such as loss of movement. And, physical therapy is a covered benefit under Medicare and most commercial insurance plans. Who Physical Therapists Are Physical therapists are highly trained clinicians and over 75 percent have a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. The discipline can trace its roots back to Hippocrates, father of Western medicine, who advocated “hands on” treatment, including massage, manual therapy and hydrotherapy for the ancient Greeks. “Most people only think about physical therapy for help with orthopedic issues, such as a bad knee or shoulder, or in relation to sports injuries, but physical therapy is much more than that—it is a key component in the treatment of the full range of neuromusculoskeletal diseases and conditions,” said Matthew R. Hyland, PT, Ph.D. and president of the New York Physical Therapy Association. “Physical therapy can help people walk after suffering a stroke, help people with rheumatoid arthritis complete everyday tasks such as cooking or writing, and help people regain their stamina after a heart attack.” What Physical Therapy Does Physical therapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of many musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, from arthritis to vertigo and from sprains, strains and fractures to stroke. It uses a variety of therapeutic techniques including manual therapy, exercise, balance training and patient education to relax, strengthen and heal muscles. Its primary goal is to help maintain, restore or improve motion and mobility that has been impaired by disability, injury or disease. It can also help eliminate pain in tendinitis, bursitis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, offering an alternative to costly medications and injections. Plus, by eliminating pain and restoring mobility, it can often help avoid the need for surgery. Where To Learn More To find out more about physical therapy and how it can help you, go to www. moveforwardny.com. Physical therapy can play a key role in any wellness program, helping people avoid future problems.

Three Simple Switches for Better On-the-Go Snacks (NAPS)—Even though today’s mom is on-the-go, she still seeks ready-to-grab snacks that are better nutrition choices for her family. “Snacks can be quick and good for your family with a few simple switches,” says Tara Gidus, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N, the Diet Diva from the nationally syndicated, Daily Buzz and author of “Pregnancy Cooking & Nutrition for Dummies.” Tara suggests trying these three simple switches: #1: Switch snack chips for homemade trail mix. “You don’t have to hike to enjoy a trail mix,” remarks Tara. “By mixing your own blend, you can give your family more nutrients than a snack chip would provide.” Tara says that many families enjoy dried fruit, unsalted nuts and even a few dark chocolate bits. Tara says that, “Moms can feel good about the nutrients from the dried fruit and healthier fats found in the nuts!” #2: Switch from pre-packaged to prepared. “Preparing healthy snacks can be just as convenient as pre-packaged ones,” notes Tara. Tara suggests chopping veggies and leaving them in grab-and-go baggies in the fridge, keeping string cheese and low fat yogurts on-hand, and preparing peanut butter and whole grain crackers to take on the road. #3: Switch from butter to Country Crock. “To save on saturated fat, I suggest that moms cook, bake, spread and top with a soft spread,” says Tara. Country Crock has 70 percent less saturated fat than butter, no partially hydrogenated oils—so 0 grams trans fat per serving—and no cholesterol.

ANGOLA PENNYSAVER

Supervisor’s Report (Third Quarter)

The much anticipated NYS Comptroller’s audit has been completed and is now public. The results indicate that Town of Evans finances were in disarray. The 2012 Town Board has responded by implementing the following: • Restructured current Health Care coverage for all town employees, resulting in significant savings. • Offered employees a retirement incentive for the highest tiered workers. • Negotiated a Police contract with 0% increases for the first two years, resulting in additional negotiated savings. • Currently in the final stages of reaching an agreement with the Erie County Water Authority to begin the Lease Management Agreement. • Working with an alternative energy company to utilize solar energy to offset utility costs. • Created a Department of Public Works from Parks, Marina and Water Departments to maximize manpower without additional hiring or overtime costs. • Successfully developed an electronic waste program that has begun to generate revenue. • With the cooperation of the Board and town departments, presented the 2013 Tentative Budget that limits spending and minimizes the taxpayer burden, all without diminishing services.

Other successful measures taken in this quarter include:

• Creation of a town Disabilities Committee comprised of volunteers who will assist residents with permanent or temporary disability issues. • Dedicated the new playground equipment at Nettlecreek, funded by grants and generous donations. • Settled issues regarding the length of service programs with our veteran volunteer firefighters. • Completed the first stage of the Kennedy Rd. Green-Way path that gives Lake Erie Beach residents safe access to our beach and park. • Received NYS Legislature’s approval of the Lake Erie Beach Revitalization plan that gives homeowners relief and reinvests in our community. • Achieved a successful outcome with NYS Department of Transportation to continue Erie Rd. (Rt. 5) as a four-lane highway. The Evans Town Board is committed to correct the current financial situation. It will always act for the benefit of the town, not politics. I urge residents to become active in our endeavor as we close out the 2012 year.

Kevin Dash, Supervisor
