Community News LADIES AUXILIARY PRESIDENT MAKES FORMAL VISIT
LS SENIOR HIGH BANDS PREPARE TO COMPETE IN NYC
The Lake Shore Senior High Bands, under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett and Mrs. Carrie Poissant, will be performing at another National Band Competition the weekend of April 19th, 2013 in the city so great they named it twice; New York City! Students from the Senior High Bands will be on tour April 18th to the 21st. Over the past 13 years, the bands have competed nationally on six occasions and produced 8 professional recordings. With a great deal of hard work, the Senior High Bands have always done very well and represented our school and community with pride. This year the groups are off to compete in the Big Apple Classic at the College of Staten Island. The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will compete against all other bands in attendance at the festival and will be adjudicated by a panel of nationally renowned judges. They will find out their results at an exciting Awards Ceremony following the festival at the famed dinner show, Medieval Times. The last time the bands competed in NYC they all placed first in their respective classes, a student was awarded the top soloist award, and the Wind Ensemble received the Grand Champion award for placing first with the highest score out of every music group in attendance at the festival. The students in the senior high bands will enjoy a very exciting and educational itinerary in addition to the music festival while in NYC. Some of the fantastic highlights and events include; a workshop under the direction of the director of the longest running musical on Broadway, “The Phantom of the Opera”, seeing the city at night from the top of Rockefeller Plaza touring the “Top of the Rock”, a tour of the Radio City Music Hall, the 9/11 Memorial and a speaking engagement with a 9/11 first responder, Times Square before enjoying the “Phantom of the Opera” musical at the historic Majestic Theater followed by a meet and greet with actors and actresses from the show, a tour called the “Sounds of the City Music Safari” - a 4 hour tour that will take the kids deep into the music and arts history of the city including the Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, Julliard, the Cotton Club, Great White Way, Duke Ellington Memorial, and John Lennon Memorial, and finally, students will complete their great experience on a harbor cruise that will sail under the Brooklyn Bride just past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Along with a tour of this magnitude comes a large financial commitment from the students and community. To see the Senior High Bands in Concert please attend one of our upcoming Concerts. The two Holiday Concerts are on Monday, December 10th and 17th in the Senior High School Auditorium at 7pm. Hope to see you there! __________

CELEBRATE THE SEASON
The award winning Lake Effect Harmony Chorus, a proud local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, will be holding their annual Christmas show on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eden American Legion Post #880, 2912 Legion Drive, Eden. The show, entitled “A Holiday Cabaret,” will feature a yuletide performance by the Lake Effect Harmony Chorus presenting the traditional sounds of the season, as well as additional musical arrangements in their beautiful signature four-part harmony. The evening will also feature a huge selection of theme baskets for raffle, Christmas cookies, a 50/50 split club, door prizes, snacks, dessert & coffee, cash bar, and a grand prize raffle drawing. Lake Effect Harmony Chorus, whose members represent some 17 communities throughout Western New York extending from Lockport and Tonawanda to as far south as Springville and Ellicottville, has been entertaining at community and civic events in the area for many years. Tickets are available by reservation and pre-sale only to ensure seating. Contact. 627-4894. __________
HALLOWEEN PARADE
The 59th annual Halloween Parade, sponsored by the Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. stepped off promptly at 2 pm on Sat., Oct. 27, 2012 from the Village of Angola Fire Hall on Commercial Street. A shortened parade route, due to rainy, cold, windy weather, didn’t seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the approximately 100 dedicated, Halloween costumed marchers. Mom or dad holding the umbrella helped too. Upon returning to the warm and dry fire hall, all marchers received the traditional “Lions Club Dollar,” a trick or treat bag with treats inside, soft drink and an ice cream treat from “Brownie” the ice cream man and a pumpkin, suitable for carving eating. The Village of Angola, the Fire Department, the Evans Police Department, Dave Yager Farms, and “Brownie” (Tim Dybdahl) the ice cream man and the 100 brave souls in costume made this event possible. The Evans Lions Club is already making plans for next year. This will be our 60th parade. With the community’s help, it should be the best yet. ___________

Ms. Anderson indicated that Mr. Vogel’s book will be available for purchase at the meeting. LOCAL RESIDENT HONORED
The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. honored one of its members at the dinner meeting on October 22, 2012. Lion John Haak received the “Lion of the Year” award. This award was presented by the current Governor, Lion John Shaffer, a member of the South Buffalo/Lackawanna club. The award recognizes community service, dedication, and extra effort. It is significant because the recipient is chosen by club members. It is the club’s way of saying, “Thank you for your help.” Only one member is selected for this award each year. Lion John has received other awards and recognitions in past years, but this one is especially meaningful because it reflects the feelings of club members. Anyone interested in Lions club membership or wanting to learn more about Lions Clubs in general should visit our web site www.evanslionsorg. This site also contains links to the New York and Bermuda Lions site and Lions International site. Information is also available from any Lions Club member or by writing, Evans Township Lions Club, Inc, P.O. Box 342, Angola, NY 14006. __________

MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS - RED KETTLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Salvation Army offers help and hope to those in need all year long, but especially during the holiday season. The traditional Red Kettles at many stores are the main source of fund raising that supports the local Salvation Army all year long. “The army behind the Army is a dedicated group of community members that realize that in our slow economy, the need is even greater,” said Rod Ballengee, field representative for The Salvation Army covering Western, Central New York, and the Southern Tier. “Our kettle ringers are students, seniors, bank presidents, service club members, local church groups, families - anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of those in need in their community. Many families make an afternoon of bell ringing at the Red Kettle a holiday family tradition,” said Ballengee. “It’s empowering to see that, through a community’s generosity, The Salvation Army is able to respond quickly to those in need. Every holiday season, I’m humbled by the fact that residents in our area are so eager to give people in need a chance to rebuild their lives,” he said. Individuals and groups interested in volunteering at a Red Kettle location in their area can contact Rod Ballengee at (716) 498-2439 or email him at Rod.Ballengee@ use.salvationarmy.org. _________

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT GEOGRAPHY
Students in Mr. Renzo's third grade class at the J. T. Waugh School just finished learning about geography in social studies. The students learned about oceans, continents, landforms, waterways, and many other topics. The students then used their knowledge of these topics to create their own continent consisting of a map key, compass rose, gulf, mountain range, cities, countries, rivers, borders, as well as a written component describing their new continent. In the picture you will see some of the students wonderful creations. Pictured from left to right are Abigal, Madeline, Hayden, and Teihgin. __________

The Lake Shore Elementary instrumental music program is off to a great start! Mrs. Streeter is very excited about her talented group of fourth and fifth grade band students at Highland and J. T. Waugh. In addition to lessons and their regular school band rehearsals, jazz band has begun. Everyone is working hard and enjoying the challenge! Mrs. Martin has a great group of band students at A. LS BOYS VARSITY SOCCER SEASON ENDS
The Lake Shore Boys Varsity soccer season ended on Thursday, 10/25/12 with a tough fought 1-0 loss to Iroquois in quarterfinal sectional play. The Eagles struggled creating offense in this even match and ultimately were unable to advance. Lake Shore finished the season with an overall record of 12-4-1. All the players made this a memorable season.
The Lake Shore Cross Country teams are coming off a successful stretch of races and individual accomplishments over the last two weeks and are building up steam as they head into the championship weeks ahead. The Varsity Teams returned from New York City this past weekend after competing in the Manhattan College Invitational at historic Van Cortlandt Park. The boys team, currently ranked fifth in the large schools of WNY, raced in the Eastern States Championship race against numerous nationally ranked runners and teams from all over the East Coast, including last year’s national individual champion and the national team champions from CBA of New Jersey. The 2.5 mile course unleashed a flurry of fast times and provided a great look at the best runners around. TJ Hornberger placed third with a time of 12:20.2, placing him 16th in the history of the 40 year old race. Ian Yargeau, placed 80th, and looked back to form after missing the summer due to a stress fracture while Calvin Butlak broke the top 100 with another strong performance. Josh Wheeler, John Wasielewski, Dan Abrams, and Jason Dunlap continue to be a presence and improve their times as the season progresses. The boy’s team placed 13th in the Varsity AA-seeded race at the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester. TJ Hornberger ran his first sub-15 minute 3-mile to take 2nd place with a time of 14:51 while Calvin Butlak (34th), Ian Yargeau (47th), and Josh Wheeler (59th) each had personal bests to help the Eagles. John Wasielewski, Jason Dunlap, and Danny Abrams each ran over one minute faster than last years’ time to help with the scoring. Their strong performances continued through the week and helped propel the Eagles to two key victories over Pioneer and Springville within Division III to bring their record to 2-1. Also running strong for Lake Shore is Alex Novara, Drew Brueckl, Nick Kleese, David Dombrowski, Brendan Wheeler, Zachary Koenig, and Tyler Schohn. The girls’ team continues to improve with strong running coming from senior captain Mary Beth Benzing and eighth-grader Natalie Cummings. Each broke the 20-minute mark for the first time at McQuaid with Benzing taking 22nd place with a time of 19:34 and Cummings placing 37th with a 19:56. Rachel Youngers, Alyssa Kij, Kaylee Majuk, Caitlin McKinnis, and Chelsey Valle all recorded personal bests, some dropping almost 2 minutes from last year’s times, and helped the girls to a 16th place out of 34 teams. In their divisional meet against Pioneer at Sprague Brook the teams were tied with only one runner each left on the course. Youngers emerged from the woods in the lead and increased it as she sprinted the last hundred yards to secure the victory for Lake Shore. The team currently stands at 1-2 in Division III with the last meet of the season scheduled for Thursday. At the Manhattan Invitational, Natalie Cummings ran her smartest race of the season and led the Eagles over the finish line in a time of 16:40, coming in 47th place. Mary Beth Benzing placed 69th with a strong time of 17:01 and continues to improve her standing amongst other runners in Class B. Senior Claudia Koenig, and juniors Caitlin McKinnis, Rachel Youngers and Chelsey Valle helped pace the girls to 22nd place team finish out of 29 teams. __________

LS BOYS SOCCER BEATS CHEEKTOWAGA
The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated Cheektowaga 2-1 Wednesday, 10/17/12, on Senior Night. Wade Bergum scored a goal and added an assist on AJ Bergum's goal to account for the Eagles' scoring. The team's last regular season match was Friday, October 19th, at Amherst, with sectional play beginning next week. Lake Shore's record now stands at 8-2-1 in league play and 12-2-1 overall. __________
SCS VISITS THE GREAT PUMPKIN FARM
On Monday, October 15th, Southtowns Catholic School's Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade all went to visit The Great Pumpkin Farm! The children had lots of fun watching a puppet show with singing chickens, feeding goats and alpacas at their corrals, and taking a hayride through to the pumpkin patch. At the end of the hayride, each child was able to pick out a pumpkin to take home with them! Our classes also observed all different size pumpkins. Some pumpkins were small enough to fit in the palm of your hand while others we so huge, and weighed as much as 1400 pounds!! The children’s excitement wasn’t hindered by the weather, and as a thank you each child also went home with a wonderful goodie bag to remember their time at The Great Pumpkin Farm. LAKE SHORE SENIOR HIGH MUSIC STUDENTS SELECTED FOR AREA ALL-STATE
The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), a professional state music education organization, hosts music festivals and yearly auditions for students who wish to apply as one of the top student musicians in the area and in the state. In the spring, interested students travel to host solo festival schools where they audition on a prepared solo in hopes of being selected to a group of elite student musicians at a festival called Area All-State. In the local area, Zone 1 of New York State, consisting of students from Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties, 11 students will represent the Lake Shore Senior High Music Department this year. Each of these student performers received a very high score on their spring solo and competed against thousands of students across the four counties. The students representing Lake Shore this year are: Erin Atwood (alternate), freshman French horn; Kennedy Cymerman, freshman clarinet; Brianne Ingrao, junior violin; Emmelee Williams, junior viola; George Donald Beckstein III, senior clarinet; Mary Gian (alternate), senior flute; Lillian Manke, senior voice; Kade McGarrity, senior trombone; Kyle Tezanos, senior percussion; Jonathan Weber (alternate), junior euphonium; and Jake Zelak – senior percussion. This is quite an accomplishment for these students. Freshman students will perform at Akron High School on November 3rd and the 10-12th grade students at the King Concert Hall at SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, November 17th. All of these student musicians are under the direction of Mrs. Anna Agro, Mr. Eric Blodgett, Mr. Glenn Molik, and Mrs. Carrie Poissant. On Sunday, October 7th over 60 of the area’s best basketball players gathered in Lancaster as St. Mary’s High School played host to the 8th Annual ADPRO Sports / BCANY Western New York Boys’ High School Basketball Showcase. The event, which has sold out all 8 years, gives local players an opportunity to play in front of college coaches from throughout New York and Pennsylvania. Following registration and uniform distribution, Coach Kevin Moore of Fredonia State discussed the recruitment process for the college bound player, with a strong emphasis on the academic requirements. The players then ran through a series of drills administered by high school coaches who are members of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. These drills were organized and designed to provide exposure to a variety of skills including ball handling, shooting and transition offense and defense. The young men were divided into teams and then they scrimmaged in 20 minute formats. Over 25 college coaches were in attendance as they prepared their recruitment plans for the 2012-13 season. Several local players and coaches took part in this event annually sponsored by AdPro Sports, one of the country’s largest dealers of Nike apparel, footwear, and equipment and the BCANY. Coaches Rob Catalino of North Collins and Dan Gerken of Lake Shore guided the players through the transition and fast break session during the drill period. Frontier players Shawn Fisher, Tyger German, and Kevin Marcinkowski as well as Jared Keppel from North Collins and Clark Brueckl of Lake Shore showcased their talents in front of the college coaches who each received a detailed profile of all of the athletes. It was a great day of basketball for those involved and served as notice that the high school hoop season is just around the corner. __________
LS FRESHMAN ACADEMY TEAMBUILDING BOOT CAMP
On September 28th, the Lake Shore High School Freshman Academy hosted its Annual Teambuilding Boot Camp for the Class of 2016. Academy students and teachers spent the afternoon working, brainstorming and coming together in an effort to show the power of teambuilding, collaboration and class/school camaraderie. The freshman class was divided into sections based on their freshman seminar classes and challenged to complete six obstacle courses and collaborative activities in a two-hour time span. Students and teachers had to work together and trust one-another to complete each task. The various mental, physical and social/emotional tasks not only encouraged teambuilding but also strengthened class unity and solidarity. The Academy goal and mission was to create a day of fun and collaboration for ninth grade students. The students left this camp experience with positive and optimistic dispositions. The Freshman Academy promotes a philosophy of 100% percent graduation. The Freshman Academy educational professionals work very hard to promote this philosophy with students and parents. Students have affirmations in their lockers that support this philosophy: • I will forever represent the Lake Shore Freshman Academy and Lake Shore High School • Failure is NOT an option; I will be proactive and succeed! • I will graduate on time with my classmates in June 2016! • I am never alone, and I know the teachers at LSC love and care for me! __________

FIRE SAFETY POSTER CONTEST AT JOHN T. WAUGH ELEMENTARY
Students at J.T.Waugh teamed up with the Village of Angola Volunteer Fire Department for the second annual Fire Safety Poster Contest to jump start the school-year! With the help of Art Teachers Mr. Ruffino, Mrs. Wade and Mrs. Smaldino, students learned about fire prevention and safety procedures while designing creative posters (grades 3-5) and coloring “Sparky the Fire Dog” (grades K-2) depicting this years fire safety theme “Have Two Ways Out.” Fire Chief Carlson, Mrs. Carlson, and Fire Department President Scott Russell organized a wonderful fire safety assembly for the kids, with help from the fantastic members of the Village of Angola's Volunteer Fire Department. THANKSGIVING MEMORIES
With the holidays quickly approaching, I wanted to stop for a moment and reflect. When I was a child and into my late teens, my grandma always had all of our family over for Thanksgiving dinner. This was no small task! All of our family included my parents, my sister and me, my mom’s 4 sisters, their spouses and children and my mom’s brother (I’ll never forget the year the adults were trying to decide if we should go ahead and eat or keep waiting for Uncle Jack, who was hunting, when he showed up with an albino deer he had shot. It wasn’t even white from being dragged through the woods and mud. It looked like a big dirty dog!) Depending on who lived where and were able to make it, that included from 12 to 15 grandchildren! The only way this happened was that my grandparents were the custodians/caretakers at the First Church of Evans, and the church allowed us to use the community building and kitchen. What happy, and some not so happy, memories there are! Grandma and the women cooked, the men cleaned up. The kids ran around, hid from each other, made up and performed skits - anything anyone came up with that the others agreed upon. There was an age difference of 5 years between the youngest of the older grandchildren (me) and the younger group. How we couldn’t wait to move up from the “kid’s table”! After my grandpa passed away, my grandma had to move in 1988 to the Steepleview apartments and obviously she couldn’t host the event any longer. My mom and aunts tried, but it was never the same. The kids were growing up, moving away and having their own families and having to share the holidays with their in-laws. I myself began going to my future father-in-law’s home, two small children in tow, and started making more happy memories. That was in 1993. Although he had a small home, we all squeezed in, a whole new family for me that made me welcome from the start, including my husband’s stepsisters & brothers and their families. That lasted until, tragically, my father-in-law passed away in 2008. When Thanksgiving rolled around, his three sons didn’t even want to talk about it, let alone gather together for this meal without their loving father. That’s when I was introduced to the LACC sponsored Community Thanksgiving Dinner. I felt it was the perfect opportunity for my family! We didn’t want to celebrate, we didn’t want to sit at home, maybe, just maybe, we could make a difference to someone else who didn’t want to sit at home either. I joined the committee and volunteered myself (and I will admit, family members who I had not consulted) to help out. Each year since, I have watched in amazement as this event has grown in size, both volunteers and those who choose to dine with us! We are actually spreading out to the surrounding communities, including Eden, North Collins and Silver Creek, and this year expect to feed 500, yes, I said 500, people! We have had such support, both from sponsors and volunteers, it is overwhelming. It has become such a part of MY Thanksgiving that I don’t know what I’d do without it! To be able to go somewhere where everyone is so friendly and welcoming, whether alone or a whole family, it warms the heart. The food and fellowship is so enjoyable, my brothers-in-law join us now too. My husband and two sons volunteer their time so we get to spend it together. We can go individually or together to the prayer corner. No one judges or asks questions other than how is your dinner, would you like dessert, and if you have any suggestions for improvement! The food can’t be beat - your choice of white or dark meat, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, tossed salad, cranberry sauce and so on! Oh, and the desserts! If you

I’m going to let the bird out of the cage - this year we’re going to try a Christmas Day Roast Beef Dinner, also sponsored by LACC, same time, same place, deliveries and all! A place where “Everyone is welcome on this special day of gratitude for the Lord’s abundant blessings!” Blessings, Brooke __________

EVANS BANK OPENS NEW BRANCH ON MAIN ST. IN WILLIAMSVILLE
Evans Bank, (parent company Evans Bancorp, Inc., NYSE Amex: EVBN), announced the opening of its 14th full service branch located at 5178 Main Street in Williamsville. David J. Nasca, president and chief executive officer of Evans Bank, noted, “While we have been considering a number of locations for branches, Williamsville has always been at the top of our list, which is why we are so excited to be opening at this location in the heart of the Williamsville business district. It was also extremely gratifying to partner with Iskalo Development, a long time customer of the bank, a leading developer and steward of several historic properties,” Nasca added. The branch is housed in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest standing church buildings in Western New York. Constructed in 1834 as a Reformed Mennonite Meeting House, it is currently owned by Iskalo Development, which leases it to Evans. The property, situated at the corner of Main and North Forest, also houses a location of The Evans Agency, where property and casualty insurance will be provided to businesses and consumers. The branch offers customers modern, convenient services including a drive-thru teller and ATM, while at the same time maintaining the historic and architectural integrity of the building. Banking services are provided in the current church building, returning public access to this significant piece of local history. In fact, there are several elements in the building which highlight the history of the property. Hours of operation at the new branch are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. The ATM and night drop are available 24 hours.
Lion Jim Sedor, a member of the Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. was honored with a “Melvin Jones Fellowship,” the highest honor a Lions Club member can earn. This was in recognition of his 17 years of dedicated service, not only to the Lions Club, but to the Evans/Brant community thru Lions Club projects. The award is named for Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International. His vision and dedication started what has become the largest service organization in the world. The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. is part of that organization. Lion Jim is currently the secretary of your Lions Club. The club meets the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. A list of meeting places and upcoming events can be found in the calendar section of our web site @ evanslions.org. The award was presented at the Monday, Oct. 23, 2012 meeting, which was also attended by our District Governor, Lion Jim Shaffer. Dist. Gov. Shaffer represents the 6 W.N.Y. counties (Dist. 20N) at state wide meetings. New York State is designated District 20 by Lions Clubs International organization. Pictured are (L to R) 2012-13 Club Pres., Lion Jim Dawson, Lion Jim Sedor and his wife Patricia, and 201213 District 20N Governor, Lion Jim Shaffer. EVANS POLICE DEPARTMENT CONFIDENTIAL ANONYMOUS TIP LINE: 217-3585 THE BENEFITS OF MEDICAL MASSAGE
After an injury or surgery people will often avoid using the surrounding muscles until the injury has healed. This causes the muscles around the area of injury to become stiff and sore. Medical massage therapy promotes circulation and mobility which helps heal and rehabilitate the muscle. Massage stimulates proper functioning while also preventing additional injury. Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. The massage therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription. Medical Massage often: · Decreases Pain, Inflammation & Irritation · Releases Tension · Alleviates Stress · Improves Circulation · Aids in the Relief of Nerve Compression & Entrapment. · Increases Flexibility and Range Of Motion · Calms the Nervous System Your medical massage therapist will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan to meet your needs. Many insurance plans do cover medical massage, so it is important to check your plan coverage. Teresa Campbell, Licensed Massage Therapist, Invision Health and the Brain and Spine Center
