MEMBER OF THE MONTH AT THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF LAKE SHORE
The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Ethan Cohen and Elizabeth Todaro-Tucker as November's Members of the Month (MOTM). Every month Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports, games, and Daily Challenges, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Ethan is in third grade at John T. Waugh Elementary. Mr. Renzo is his teacher and his favorite subject is math (second to free time). Ethan's favorite food is anything with chicken. Ethan says he likes everything about being a member at the Boys and Girls Club, but his favorite thing to do while he is at the Club is playing in the gym. You can count on Ethan to participate in all of the daily challenges around the Club and he is always kind to others. Elizabeth is in fourth grade in Mrs. Blasz's class at John T. Waugh Elementary. Her favorite subject is gym. If Elizabeth could change one thing about school, she would make ice cream would be free for everyone in the lunch room. Elizabeth likes coming to the Boys and Girls Club because she likes to make crafts in the art room, playing in the gym, and volunteering for different jobs around the Club. Elizabeth is always happy when she is at the Club, excited to participate in Club programs, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to the staff. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club's Student of the month, Lacie McMurray. Lacie was chosen to be the Student of the Month because of her dedication to her school work and for completing extra Project Learn activities. Lacie has also earned the most Power Hour points out of all the members for the month of November. Lacie is in fourth grade at AJ Schmidt Elementary. Her teacher is Mrs. Smaldino and her favorite subject is physical education. Lacie's favorite book is the ABC's of Endangered Animals. When Lacie is at the Boys and Girls Club her favorite programs are Power Hour and gym. In addition to being a super student, Lacie has a kind heart. Students in Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 5 Science Class did a Science lab experiment on leaves. The students broke in to small groups and made predictions of what color would come from the leaves. The kids cut the leaves into small pieces, mashed them with a spoon and placed them in a cup with rubbing alcohol. After 15 minutes, the kids added a strip of paper towel and they watched the towel turn green. The lab showed how chlorophyll is responsible for the green color of a plant's leaves. INCORPORATING FUN TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
SS. Peter & Paul School Technology Teacher Aaron Odden has had fun incorporating the popular game Minecraft into the classroom. “When Minecraft was first getting very popular, I saw an interview with a teacher who created a version of Minecraft designed for use in schools and how other teachers had begun using the game in their classroom,” said Odden. “I knew that it was popular with the students here and because we had just updated our computer lab, I knew I had the resources to bring the game to Saints Peter and Paul. The more students are interested in what they are working on, the more they will take away from it. Minecraft’s popularity is part of what makes it an effective teaching tool.” Students will be working cooperatively and demonstrating good digital etiquette and communication as laid out in the Diocesan Technology curriculum. Students in second and third grade will have silent Minecraft days where they can only communicate by typing to each other in order to practice finding letters on the keyboard and demonstrate proper typing technique. For other subjects, older students will do research on other societies through history and build towns based on their research and write an accompanying essay. They will be working on walk-through book reports where students recreate their favorite settings from books and guide players through the story using carefully placed signs. Third and fourth graders will be learning about area and perimeter by building fences and filling them in with blocks. They can even work on making bar graphs in first grade and eighth graders can conduct physics experiments with the in game gravity and compare that with gravity in the real world. Odden is also offering a Minecraft club afterschool for fourth to eighth grade. “I hope students take to heart what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to behave and work with others in a digital environment, said Odden. “I also hope, because their interest level in the game is so high, that whatever they learned while making their project stays with them longer.” Pictured above from left are Nicholas McCulloch and Gillian Tagliaferro. JOHN T. WAUGH ELEMENTARY “THINKS PINK”
Students at Lake Shore Central School District John T. Waugh Elementary School participate in monthly community projects with the month of October taking on the “Think Pink” attitude to bring awareness and support for fighting breast cancer. Families, staff, and students got behind their Principal Paula J. Eastman’s passion for this cause. The school has raised close to $500 in the past four years through the $1.00 Ribbon display where family decorate and color a beautiful array of ribbons to line the halls. The funds went to the Susan G. Komen for a Cure. This year the Waugh collected $170, which will go to the ‘Young Survivors Coalition’. The girls varsity soccer team led by Mrs. Laurie Schultz, Kindergarten teacher at Waugh, also raised an additional $100.00 for the YSC, knowing that Mrs. Eastman will represent the school and District in a three day bike ride from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in the fall of 2014. This year, the school came together to make a show of support for all the families, friends, and colleagues who have been touched by tendrils of breast cancer. With the help and skill of teachers, Paul Hornberger, Chuck Ruffino, Nicole Wegrzynowski, Trish Ippolito (substitute) and Alisha Flowers (substitute) a giant ribbon was scaled on the J. T.
