TOWN OF BRANT SUPERVISOR CORNER

I, and the Town Board, would like to wish everyone a very Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year. I am happy to announce that our 2013 budget shows a decrease in the tax rate for the 6th consecutive year and we have been awarded two new grants totaling $74,015 that will create a climate controlled records room in our new Town Hall and enhance our Town Park by creating rest rooms with handicap access for everyone at all times. 2012 was our first complete year in our New Town Hall and it has been given rave reviews by all that have visited our facility. 2012 also saw the building of a Municipal Police Garage and the purchase of a New Highway Truck and Police car. We had a very successful Recreation program serving 153 campers for 6 weeks. The Town pool was an oasis this last summer and the 9th annual Summer Fest was a success. The Town received $132,350.71 in Grant money for 2012. Also with the help of volunteers, field lights were installed on the Football field mostly donated by Lake Shore Junior Football League who is our town’s youth team. They honored our community this past fall by going undefeated and winning the Oataka league of WNY championship, then going to Orlando Florida representing WNY and beating teams from Missouri and Illinois to become undefeated Champions of the East. Also for your information, Lake Shore Youth also built and donated to the town a concession stand and a storage facility. Looking to 2013 will be very exciting as we improve our park by extending the walking path and create a nature walk. We will be adding another Parking lot & Horseshoe Pits for your convenience and pleasure. Funding has been increased for our Free Summer Concerts in the Park series that begin in July. Our Senior Citizen & Silver Sneakers group has a lot to offer. We are planning a larger Summerfest with rides and attractions in June and the use of our Football field for night time events. During the summer come out and enjoy the 3 free shelters that are available as a first come basis and play some tennis & basketball on our outdoor courts.

The Town of Brant signed a new Waste Contract with Best Way Disposal and they will be picking up garbage earlier than Casella waste did, so put your waste out the night before. The day of pickup has remained the same. For everyone that qualifies, there is a Traveling Food Pantry every 3rd Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Senior Recreation Center. Also every 4th Saturday there is an E-Waste (electronic) drop off behind the Highway garage from 9 am to Noon. Here is to you, for another successful year, Supervisor, Leonard K. Pero And the Town Board

EVANS-BRANT CHAMBER SPEAKER SERIES

The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce kicked off the 2012-2013 Speakers Series with a 12/13/12 presentation on financial strategies to build your business. Salvatore Gandolfo and James C. Kranz of Merrill Lynch's Wealth Management group addressed chamber members at the Evans Historical Society's 1857 Museum. Their groups manage portfolios of $500M for small businesses and individuals. They addressed the "fiscal cliff" arising from 1) the forthcoming expiration of decreased tax rates which will decrease the amount of discretionary spending going into the economy and 2) government spending cuts, which decrease the amount of money going into the economy. Decreased money into the economy will result in slowing GDP growth to about 2 percent. It will be bad for the recovery that has been slowly proceeding since 2009. The stock market return is at about 13% for 2012. Gandolfo's outlook is that neither of the two dominant parties will want to jeopardize the recovery. Tax rates will likely not remain as low as they are currently so their clients are selling some positions and taking their tax impact in 2012. They reviewed the typical life stages of a business and distinguished common business cash needs associated with those stages. For instance, how a start-up can finance using a line-of-credit, instead of liquidating retirement assets. The presentation included an analysis of retirement savings products that are available for small businesses. A poll of attendees matched national trends: most small businesses don't offer retirement benefits for employees. Gandolfo outlined potential benefits to employers, including retaining quality personnel, tax-advantaged savings for the owner as well, and tax benefits for the business. The seminar materials outlined the various plans that are available with a table contrasting the benefits of each kind. There was a good deal of discussion on appetite for risk. Gandolfo outlined how to use historical market trends to prepare, depending on how close one is to retirement. Gandolfo pointed out that over one-third of all new business are started by retirees. "In our office, we call retirement 'the second act'. Retirees are inclined to take this kind of chance," he noted. Americans ages 55 to 64 are more likely than any other age group to start their own business. Kranz pointed out an example by way of his own father, who is retired but started a bottled sauce business in Forestville. The bottom line for running a small business is to get a return on your investment of money and time. Effective financial planning can mean your business can structure income and cash flow for longevity. The best advice: start planning now, and check your status at least once a year to make sure you stay on track.

The Chamber speaker series will take place at 6:30 pm on the third Thursday of each month in Jan., Feb., March, and April. Each event will be held at the Evans Historical Society’s 1857 Museum. The next Chamber speaker event will take place on Jan. 17 at 6:30 - 7:30 pm. The topic: Facebook for Small Businesses and introduction of a new Chamber member benefit: your company’s coupons on the Chamber website. Anton Forth, President of RT Enterprises of NY LLC, will talk about using social media to promote your business. Admission is $5 but free for chamber members with a coupon from the Chamber’s website. More information is at the Chambers website at www.ebccny.org. Picture: Chamber Education Chair Darleme McDonogh, Ed.D., presents a pair of poinsettias to speakers James C. Kranz (left) and Salvatore Ganfolfo (right.) The poinsettias were donated by Chamber board member Caryl Youngers, owner of Bella Terra Greenhouse. __________

EVANS LAUNCHES COMMERCIAL INVESTMENT CORNER ON WEBSITE

The Town of Evans recently kicked-off the Commercial Investment Corner, a new initiative to help market available commercial properties to potential investors using the Town website. LS PRE CALCULUS STUDENTS DRAW PICTURES USING EQUATIONS

Inside Mrs. Brodies' Pre Calculus class at Lake Shore Senior High School students learned how to draw pictures using only equations in their graphing calculator. By using multiple types of equations with parameters, students applied information learned in order to change the width and shift the functions in multiple directions. Pictured are two of the students who made drawings. Shelby Grey (left) drew "The Road Trip", made from ellipses, circles, lines and absolute value equations. Luke Suleski (right) drew "Jackson The Man", made from circles, ellipses, lines, and parabolas. Other students made pictures of Christmas tree with a candy cane, a snowman, a cat, a fish being caught by a fishing pole and other unique ideas using the above equations as well as hyperbolas and inverse functions. Each student had to present their pictures to the class along with a short story. Students in class were able to incorporate what they learned while having fun too. ___________

MITCHELL McGARRITY Mitchell McGarrity is the son of Sean and Diane McGarrity of Angola. He is a sixth-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for November. In school McGarrity enjoys playing a saxophone and is in the band and the jazz band. His favorite class is math. Outside of school he likes to soccer, camping and reading McGarrity is a former member of the Boy Scouts. He is a member of First Lutheran Church in Blasdell and participates in the annual Crop Walk. His future goal is to go to college. McGarrity said his favorite thing in the world is family and friends. The character trait he believes is the most important for continuing success is kindness. “If you are not kind to others, you will be alone and not get anywhere,” McGarrity said.

SOPHIA KOENIG Sophia Koenig is the daughter of Hans and Patricia Koenig, of Derby. She is an eighth-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for November. In school Koenig enjoys being in the band, where she plays in the percussion section. She is on the cross country and lacrosse teams. Her favorite class in school is English. Outside of school she plays hockey with the Hamburg Hawks as a center. Koenig’s community involvement includes volunteering to help with the Friends of the Night People. Her future goal is to be a clothing designer. Koenig said her favorite thing in the world is playing hockey. The character trait she believes is most important for continuing success is determination. “One needs to be determined, to be able to take everything step by step and to continue with it,” Koenig said. __________

BOWLING FOR A CAUSE!

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL RESEARCHES IMMIGRATION

Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 8 class each did research on an immigrant coming over to the USA via Ellis Island and then pretended to be them. They presented facts on the country, heritage, foods, and customs. Some dressed the part, some brought foods in to taste. All brought a recipe to share. They all filled a "suitcase" and described the items they brought and why they brought them. They also needed to talk about their experience of coming over, the inspections at Ellis Island. Pictured: Bradley Darvill, Hunter Skoczylas, Elliott DiChristopher, Evan Herman, Nicholas Ralph, Eli Trembley, Evan Mangan, Molly Skalski, Matthew Argy & Claire Koessler. _________

MATTHEW MEMMO Matthew J. Memmo is the son of Rich and MaryLou Memmo of Derby. He is a seventh-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for November. In school Memmo’s favorite subject in school is social studies. Outside of school he likes to bike ride and read. Memmo’s future goal is to own his own book store. He said that his favorite thing in the world is family. The character trait he believes is most important for continuing success is honesty. “If people aren’t honest, how can you tell if what is being said to you is true,” Memmo said.

The Lake Shore High School Academy of Business & Finance Students held their Christmas Bowling Party this year at Chick’s Bowling Alley. This year students decided to celebrate the holidays a bit differently! Instead of holding a Secret Santa, students decided to sponsor a needy family. When junior, Juliana Norton heard that there was a local family that was struggling to provide basic necessities for their family she proposed the idea of adopting the family in lieu of the Secret Santa. The idea was well received and the students got busy buying presents for the family. They had a great time shopping and wrapping. These remarkable, young adults coordinated and organized the entire event. Each grade level was given a member of the family to buy for. Students brought in toys, clothes, food, gift cards and other items to give to the family in order to help them celebrate the holidays. The students had a great time bowling while celebrating the true meaning of Christmas! __________

IMMACULATA ACADEMY ART STUDENTS TAKE TOP THREE SPOTS IN FIRST NIGHT ART CONTEST

Art students from Immaculata Academy recently participated in WNY United’s contest for First Night Buffalo, with students taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in their age division for art. Gabby Bonerb (1st), May Ren (2nd), and Emilee Chiavetta (3rd), all freshmen, each had their artwork place in the First Night Buffalo Drug-Free Contest. With over 600 entries of artwork and poetry for the contest, Art Teacher, Veronica Benes, couldn’t be more thrilled for the students, “The girls really understood the importance of this event and put forth their best efforts to produce quality artwork that make an important social statement.” The students all attended the First Night Buffalo Press Conference at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, where they received their awards, with Mayor Byron W. Brown in attendance. Their artwork, along with all of the other entries, were displayed at the First Night Bash on New Year’s Eve. About Immaculata Academy: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximizes her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. The Lake Shore High School Freshman Academy welcomed the Class of 2016 through its doors this fall. Students in the freshman seminar classes have been participating in various teambuilding activities designed to showcase the value of working together to create positive outcomes. Although every student is different and unique, the thing all students have in common is that they are all freshmen and part of the same class. The goal is to use such consistency and collaboration to create class camaraderie. In addition to teambuilding, the Lake Shore 2016: Freshman Seminar students have been learning what it takes to be successful academically and socially in high school. Students are learning organizational skills, time management, note-taking, critical study and reading skills. This program is geared at preparing students so they can be successful in and after high school. The Freshman Academy motto is: "Strive for 85!" (or higher). The Lake Shore Freshman Academy supports students in their efforts to become successful academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally here at Lake Shore.
