HAPPY HOLIDAYS As the Christmas season approaches, there is always so much activity, and we all become very busy. We take great pleasure in setting aside our regular work to send a heart-felt message to all our readers and advertisers. We would like you to know how much you are appreciated. As we reflect upon 2013, we are grateful for all the new friends we have made. Bob and I are very fortunate to become a part of the Angola Pennysaver’s long history, where there are so many kind and friendly people in this community. We look forward to continuing building strong relationships with our advertisers and helping you get your message out to your current and new customers. Lastly we are very thankful for the working relationship with the Eden North Collins Pennysaver. By working together, we have been able to bring you, our readers, informative papers each week, along with our new magazines. As we move into the New Year, watch for more improvements, and more themed magazines to enjoy throughout 2014. We know that without our readers and customers, our business has no reason to exist and it won't last long. Companies, and their employees, need to make "customer satisfaction" more than just an expression. We will work very hard to meet your expectations! Our thoughts now turn to what is most important — family. We know that the holidays are an important time to reconnect with family. Let the magic of this holiday season bring you joy and happiness as you spend time with your family. May your holiday be filled with joy and the coming year be overflowing with all good things in life. A very close friend shared the quote below with me years ago, and it is still true today: “If you've had wonderful family relationships, you will be able to call yourself a true success in life no matter what else you've achieved.” Best wishes for a wonderful Holiday Season and a New Year filled with peace and happiness. Sincerely, James Austin Robert Biondi Angola Pennysaver

Electrical safety tips for holiday decorating

HOME for the Holidays Guide 5

Make your home beautiful and safe this holiday season.

An entire shop of Polish Pottery!

E

veryone has at least one -- the house on the street that lights up in splendor around the holiday season. Decorations are in abundance both indoors and out, and just seeing the house brings on a smile. But as beautiful as it might be, that home may also be a safety risk if the decorator hasn’t followed precautions like these offered by CSA Group: Creativity is key but not at the cost of safety -- Let your inner designer shine, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights and electronic decorations. Be sure to turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring, and never run an electrical cord through a doorway or under a carpet indoors. Fakes are no laughing matter -- Your next door neighbor dressed up as Santa is funny. Counterfeit decorations are not so funny. Look for the mark from an accredited certification organization, such as CSA Group, on animated displays, light strings and extension cords. Ensure decorations are marked and certified for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the mood light but not fiery -- Choose flame-resistant decorations and don’t place open flames or candles near flammable materials, such as wreathes, trees or paper

decorations. Never nail or tack lighting strings to a wall, as this may damage insulation and create a shock or fire hazard. Use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks that could damage wiring to hold light strings in place. Cozy up -- Keep warm by the fireplace but be sure your gas appliances are in good working order. If the pilot light or flame goes out, turn the gas off and wait five minutes or longer (see the manufacturer’s instructions) before attempting to relight. Be alert for unusual odors or flames when your gas fireplace is on, often indicating that the fireplace is not operating properly. In such cases, contact your dealer or licensed technician for servicing. Overload on food, not watts -- Don’t overload extension cords. Use heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically-animated displays. For extreme decorators, make sure your house is capable of handling the electrical load of multiple lights and decor. If in doubt, contact a licensed professional to inspect your electrical system.

The etiquette of exchanging gifts with coworkers

Professionalism should always be a top priority when gifting coworkers.

M

any offices host a gift exchange during the holiday season. Professionalism should always be a top priority when gifting coworkers, and some men and women may want to brush up on gift-giving etiquette before exchanging gifts with fellow employees. Long before any gifts are exchanged, research your firm’s policies on gift-giving. An employee handbook or a visit to the human resources department is a good place to start. When in doubt, inquire among more seasoned workers. Many companies put dollar limits on gift values, while others have strict policies forbidding such exchanges, as it’s easy for gifts to create discomfort around the office or give the impression of favoritism.

Gift exchanges also depend on the relationship between employees and their supervisors. Close, friendly relationships may warrant gift exchanges, especially if everyone else is on board with the idea. Gifting a boss is not necessary, but employees who have a close working relationship with their supervisors may want to purchase a professional gift to indicate their appreciation of a supervisor’s support. These can include picture frames, gloves, scarves, books, and personal interest items. Steer clear of personal gifts or ones that can be taken the wrong way. Inappropriate gifts should always be avoided. Decorative gifts that do not focus on any particular religion or holiday, inspirational books, calendars, plants, and publications that cater to a particular interest likely won’t

raise anyone’s ire. However, self-help gifts, perfumes, lotions, or overly personal gifts may give recipients the wrong impression. While homemade foods were once popular gifts, many companies now discourage such gifts because they may trigger various food allergies. Gift cards tend to be universally acceptable, but only when they do not exceed the agreed-upon spending limit. Grocery store gift cards can help employees offset some of the costs of entertaining, and gift cards to popular department stores may help offset holiday spending.

Whenever any giving between coworkers takes place, care should be given to ensure all the gift values are equivalent. Coworkers who are especially close and want to give a more meaningful gift should exchange those gifts on their own time and not during office hours. Tenure can also dictate gift-giving. Employees who have been with their companies longer than their coworkers may receive a more personalized gift. Employees who receive gifts from their bosses should not

feel obligated to reciprocate. Employees should also keep in mind that personal thank-you notes are courteous, professional and appreciated.

Holiday menu planning for first-time hosts

Take a number of steps to ensure their menus appeal to all of their guests.

N

ovice holiday hosts often have a lot on their plates. Whether hosting family or friends or a combination of both, first-time hosts typically want to impress their guests while ensuring they get enough to eat and have an enjoyable evening. Since dinner is such a big part of holiday gatherings, hosts often place extra emphasis on what to serve, and that can be tricky when this is the first time they are hosting. When planning the menu for your holiday soiree, consider the following tips. • Get a head count. Though other factors will influence what to serve, the size of your guest list may ultimately dictate what to serve. For example, a small gathering of four to five people will likely rule out turkey, as even a small turkey will prove too much effort and produce too much extra food. On the same note, a small dish like lasagna might not be doable for a larger crowd, as it will force you to prepare multiple entrees, which means more time in the kitchen juggling the various cooking duties and less time with your guests. Once you have confirmed just how many guests you will be hosting, you can then choose a main course that suits the size of your guest list. • Decide which type of party you want to host. The type of party you want to host also will influence what you serve. A formal gathering should include an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, including both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees. A less formal gathering gives hosts more leeway. For example, whereas a formal gathering may include soup as an appetizer, hosting a less formal gathering allows hosts to put out some snacks or bread for guests to whet their appetites before everyone sits down for the meal. The more formal the gathering, the more formal the menu. Hosts of less formal gatherings may even want to host a holiday

pot luck buffet, inviting guests to bring a favorite dish or side dish while the hosts take care of the main course. • Ask guests if they have any dietary restrictions. Upon being invited to a holiday dinner, some invitees may let hosts know if they have any food allergies or medical conditions that restrict which foods they can eat. Solicit such information from all of your guests, and do your best to cater to each of your guests’ needs. Some guests might be on a gluten-free diet while others may need to limit their sodium intake. You might not be able to meet everyone’s demands. Let guests know if they should bring an appropriate snack if you cannot provide one for them. • Include traditional holiday fare. People have grown to expect certain things from holiday meals, be it sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving, brisket for Chanukah or holiday cookies or even eggnog at Christmas parties. When planning the menu, be sure to include at least one of these traditional items, even asking guests for suggestions. Such fare will give the party a genuine holiday feel, and guests will appreciate seeing some items on your dinner table they have enjoyed at their own holiday celebrations over the years. • Don’t overdo it. First-time hosts want to ensure everyone gets enough to eat, so it’s easy to overdo things and prepare too much food. This can be expensive, and guests may feel obligated to overeat so hosts don’t have to discard any of the food they worked so hard to prepare. Though it might once have been a holiday tradition to overeat, many men and women now prefer moderation, and hosts should keep that in mind when preparing their holiday meals. Hosting a holiday dinner for the first time can be nerve-wracking.

How to make holiday travel less taxing

Holiday travel can be unpredictable and tedious, but travelers can take steps to make the process of getting from point A to point B a lot less taxing

T

hough holiday travel is rarely hassle-free, many travelers would no doubt admit that enduring long lines at the airport or heavily trafficked highways are prices worth paying for the chance to spend time with their families come the holiday season. But while there’s no way for travelers to guarantee their flights leave on time or the roads stay clear of fellow drivers, there are ways to make the holiday travel less taxing. • Prepare to wait. Check-in lines and lines at security checkpoints tend to be especially long during the holiday season. Travelers should prepare to wait at such lines and leave their homes early enough so they can still make their flights without having to rush through airports at the last minute. If you normally leave your home two hours before your scheduled check-in, then leave an hour earlier to account for traffic en route to the airport and the long lines once you get there. If you make it through the security checkpoint with plenty of time to spare before your flight departs, you can always unwind at an airport coffee shop or restaurant, but arriving too late to the airport will only add stress to an already stressful situation. Drivers also should prepare to wait when traveling during the holiday season. Roads

will have more drivers, so travelers should build in traffic jams when estimating how long it might take for them to arrive at their destinations. Sitting in traffic might still be stressful, but it won’t be as stressful if you’re still likely to arrive to your destination on time. • Ship your gifts. Holiday travelers often try to cram gifts into their suitcases or the trunks of their vehicles, reducing the space they have to bring personal items or stretch out in their cars on road trips. Instead of squeezing as many gifts into your suitcase or vehicle as possible, ship the gifts and travel light. Traveling light can save you from having to pay potentially costly baggage fees at the airport, while drivers will notice passengers tend to be a lot more comfortable and relaxed when they don’t have to share space with bags filled with gifts. • Bring your own food. Hunger can only make flight delays and traffic jams that much worse. When traveling for the holidays, bring along your own food, especially when traveling with youngsters. Pack small meals for kids and some snacks for the flight or the drive. It’s not a safe assumption that there will be food on the flight or that you will have

time to grab some snacks in the terminal before boarding the plane. So pack some snacks before you leave for the airport. Drivers also should anticipate traffic jams and should not assume that there will be rest stops along the way where they can pick up beverages, snacks or meals. Drivers also may want to avoid pulling over so they can get to their destinations on time. Packing food and beverages for the trip can save you the trouble of making frequent pitstops to quell hunger and thirst.

bring along a book or a tablet on which they can play games or watch television. Drivers may not be able to take their eyes off the roads, but they can pack books and tablets or video game consoles for their passengers. Children may find delays or long trips especially uncomfortable, so adults should make sure kids have things to keep them occupied during such excursions.

• Pack some distractions. Whether you’re waiting to board at the gate or driving on a seemingly endless highway, pack some distractions so you or your fellow travelers aren’t left with nothing to do during delays. People traveling via airplane may want to

Complete the holiday season with gingerbread Soft Glazed Gingerbread

W

hether leaving cookies out for Santa or simply spreading some holiday cheer among family and friends, the following recipe for “Soft Glazed Gingerbread” from Elizabeth M. Prueitt and Chad Robertson’s “Tartine” is sure to please this holiday season. Soft Glazed Gingerbread Yields 12 to 20 cookies Dough 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon cocoa powder 4 teaspoons ground ginger 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cloves 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1-1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 large egg 1/2 cup blackstrap or other dark molasses 2 tablespoons light corn syrup Glaze 1 2

cup confectioners’ sugar tablespoons water

To make the dough, stir together the flour, cocoa powder, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Set aside. Using a stand mixer

fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed until creamy. Slowly add the granulated sugar and mix on medium speed until the mixture is completely smooth and soft. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed. Add the egg and mix well. Add the molasses and corn syrup and beat until incorporated. Stop the mixer again and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the flour mixture and beat on low speed until a dough forms that pulls away from the sides of the bowl and all the ingredients are well incorporated. Remove the dough from the bowl, flatten it on a large piece of plastic wrap into a rectangle about 1 inch thick, cover the dough with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a nonstick liner. Unwrap the dough and place on a floured work surface. If using a plaque with a design, roll out the dough 1/3-inch thick, lightly dust the top with flour, press your cookie molds over the dough, and then cut the shapes with a small knife and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Alternatively, using the mold as a guide, cut around it with a small knife, flip the mold over so the design is facing you, and place the dough over it, pressing it into the design. Unmold the shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between them. If using a patterned rolling pin,

HOME for the Holidays Guide 11

lightly dust the lined baking sheet with flour and transfer the dough to the pan. Lightly dust the top of the dough with flour and roll it into a rectangle about 1/3-inch thick with a plain pin. Then, using the patterned pin, roll over the dough with enough pressure to ensure a clear impression of the design. Trim the sides with a small knife. It is not necessary to cut into smaller sizes before baking. Bake the cookies until lightly golden along the sides but still soft to the touch in the centers, 7 to 15 minutes. The timing will depend on the size of the individual cookies, or if you have made a single large patterned piece that will be cut after baking. While the cookies are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and water until smooth. When the cookies are ready, remove from the oven and let cool on the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Then, while the cookies are still warm, using even

strokes, brush a light coat of glaze on top of each cookie, evenly covering it. Let the cookies cool completely. When the glaze dries, it should leave a shiny, opaque finish. If you have used a patterned pin to make a single large plaque, cut into the desired sizes with a small, very sharp knife. The cookies will keep in an airtight container in a cool place for about 2 weeks. They do not freeze well, however, as glaze becomes watery when they are thawed.

` Tis the season for shipping gifts

Shipping gifts is a far more convenient way to get all those precious presents from point A to point B.

T

ravel is a staple of the holiday season. Many men and women find themselves spending a significant amount of time in the air or on the road, whether traveling to visit family or embarking on a holiday getaway. For those who must fly to their holiday destinations, travel can present certain obstacles, as baggage restrictions and fees have made it more difficult and more expensive to travel with gifts in tow. But savvy holiday shoppers need not worry about fitting all of those gifts into their overstuffed luggage. Shipping gifts is a far more convenient way to get all those precious presents from point A to point B, and it saves travelers money on airline baggage fees. When shipping gifts this holiday season, consider the following tips. • Use the right box. Boxes come in all shapes and sizes, and there are packing methods to ensure gifts arrive intact. The gift should not have much wiggle room inside the box, as the more the gift can move around the more likely it is to break. Gently shake the box before closing it, adding any padding if the gift is moving around too much, otherwise move the gift to a smaller box. A box also should not be too small, as it may break before reaching its destination. • Wrap each individual item. When shipping holiday gifts, it’s often most convenient to include several items in one large box. When doing so, wrap each item separately in airfilled wrapping or newspaper. This reduces the risk of items breaking during shipping. • Line the interior of the box with a garbage bag. A garbage bag lining along the inside of the box can help to prevent potential

water damage from rain, snow or other leaky packages. • Tightly tape the box. Once items are inside the box, be sure to use professional packing tape. Though there are cheaper alternatives available, professional packing tape is far more likely to hold up as the item travels from your home to its ultimate destination. Low quality tape could split or tear, resulting in a situation where boxes break open and items fall out. • Pay attention when reusing boxes. Reusing boxes is a great way to benefit the environment when shipping holiday gifts, but carefully examine the box before shipping it. Old labels and bar codes should be removed so packages ultimately end up in the correct destination. In addition, check any boxes for wear and tear before reusing them. Avoid using any boxes with previous water damage or tears. • Double check addresses. Before shipping items, double check the address, making sure the name, address and ZIP code are correct. Confirm the information with the recipient as well. Be sure to write the address and full ZIP code in the method the shipping company requires to ensure prompt delivery. • Include an extra mailing label inside the box. Inclement weather is common come the holiday season, and some packages may fall victim to the elements. In such situations, shipping labels can be compromised, and some shipping companies have admitted they will open the box to look for a backup label if the exterior label has been soiled. Include an extra mailing label inside the box as a backup plan.

W

hether you are hosting family for the holidays or just a few close friends, setting an elaborate table for your meals can help enhance the ambiance. Dining at a beautifully arranged table can set the mood for a wonderful evening. Depending on the overall theme of your holiday decorating, you can incorporate components of similar decorative items into the table settings or go off the beaten path with new ideas. Options abound when arranging a holiday table, but here are a few ideas to get started. Place Settings

If your fine china has been collecting dust behind the doors of a china cabinet, now is the time to dust them off and use them for the first time. Fine china can impart a feeling of elegance and make the holiday meal even more special. If you do not have china or prefer something else, invest in dishes and glasses decorated with a holiday theme. These can be used annually for your special dinner. Invest in cloth napkins, which are more ornate and elegant than traditional napkins. Create napkin rings that double as place cards. Make small rings of threaded popcorn, or use mini wreaths to surround the napkins and tie on small tags

with guests’ names. Centerpiece Don’t be afraid to be elaborate with your holiday table centerpiece. You may prefer to use traditional elements, like a floral display of white roses mixed with red poinsettia stalks. You also can pull a piece of your holiday decor to serve as the centerpiece. Do you have a hand-painted statue or ceramic item that you absolutely love? Show it off front and center. Tall vases filled with pine cones and berries also add some elegance to the table. For a touch of whimsy, fill the vases with colorcoordinated candies and wrap the vases with ribbon. The candy can be enjoyed later on. A miniature Christmas tree adorned in tiny lights and ornaments also works well as a centerpiece. Tablecloth A plain-colored tablecloth contrasts well with the finery on the table itself. Simple shades tend to work best. Plus, they won’t look out of place should you want to use the tablecloth another time of year. Setting a beautiful holiday table can enhance the enjoyment of any special day.

A turkey tailor-made

For a holiday feast

Herb-Roasted Turkey

1. In a small bowl, combine the butter, chopped parsley, chopped rosemary, chopped thyme, chopped sage, salt, and pepper, and mix well.

Serves 10

N

o holiday feast is complete without turkey. The main course at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner tables alike, turkey is something many people look forward to more and more as the holidays approach.

Those about to cook their first turkey or even turkey-cooking veterans who want to stray from the norm may want to consider the following recipe for “Herb-Roasted Turkey” from Yolanda Banks’ “Cooking for Your Man” (Broadway Books).

12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped, plus 4 whole sprigs 1 large sprig fresh rosemary, leaves chopped, plus 2 whole sprigs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, plus 4 whole sprigs 15 leaves fresh sage, chopped, plus 3 whole leaves 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for the turkey 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for the turkey 1 15-pound turkey 1 lemon, quartered 8 shallots, peeled and halved 1 head garlic, cloves separated and peeled 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock 2/3 cup dry white wine 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2. Position a rack in the bottom third of the oven and preheat the oven to 450 F. Sprinkle the main cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper. Place the whole sprigs of parsley, rosemary and thyme and the sage leaves into the cavity. Add the lemon, 4 shallot halves and half of the garlic cloves. 3. Starting at the neck end, carefully slide a hand between the skin and the breast meat to loosen the skin. Spread 3 tablespoons of the herb butter over the breast meat under the skin. Tuck the wing tips under the skin, and tie the legs together to hold the shape. Season the turkey generously all over with salt and pepper. 4. Place the turkey on a wire rack set in a large roasting pan. Rub 4 tablespoons of the herb butter over the turkey. Roast about 30 minutes, until golden brown, and reduce the heat to 350 F. Baste the turkey with 1/2 cup of the broth. Cover only the breast area with a sheet of heavyduty aluminum foil. Scatter the remaining shallots and garlic cloves in the pan around the turkey. 5. Continue to roast the turkey for about 11/2 hours, basting with 1/2 cup of broth every 30 minutes. Remove the foil from the turkey breast. Continue to roast the turkey, basting with pan juices every 20 minutes, about 1 hour longer, until it’s golden brown and a thermometer

inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165 F. Transfer the turkey to a platter and brush with 1 tablespoon of the herb butter. Tent it loosely with foil and let it rest for 20 minutes before carving. 6. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the shallots and garlic from the roasting pan to a plate. Transfer the pan juices to a medium bowl, then skim off and discard the fat. Set the pan over two burners on medium-high heat. Deglaze the pan with the wine and 1 cup of chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits. Bring the sauce to a boil, reduce the heat to medium, and cook until it’s reduced by half, about 4 minutes. Pour the sauce into a large measuring glass. Add the degreased pan juices, and broth, if necessary, to equal 3 cups of liquid. 7. Blend the flour into the remaining herb butter until combined. Pour the broth mixture into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Gradually whisk in the herb-butter mixture. Add any accumulated juices from the turkey platter and boil until the gravy thickens enough to coat a spoon, whisking occasionally, about 6 minutes. Add the remaining shallots and garlic to the gravy and simmer for 1 minute. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the turkey with the gravy.

Safely deck the halls this holiday season Keep the area around a fireplace clear to prevent fires.

S

pending time around a warm fireplace is an indelible holiday image. The entire family hanging stockings from the mantle while a fire roars below can make for a cozy evening and set the scene for the season to come. While the warm glow of candles and a blazing fire are key components of holiday decor, some holiday decorations have potential to be dangerous if homeowners are not careful.

Candles

Fireplaces

• Use electric lights on a Christmas tree instead of lit candles.

Gathering around the fireplace is a holiday tradition for many families. But it is important to remember basic safety precautions when doing so.

Candles used to decorate Christmas trees and the like were once the norm. However, candles can easily tip over and start a fire. Today there are far safer alternatives to providing holiday illumination.

• Flameless candles use a twinkling LED light to create the atmosphere of an actual candle. They can be purchased in all different shapes and sizes. • Extinguish all candles before retiring for the night.

• When using candles, make sure they are out of the reach of children and/or pets.

Christmas Lights

• Fireplaces can become quite hot no matter which type of fuel they burn. Draperies and other fabric should not be hung too close to fireplaces and stoves.

Many brands of Christmas lights are ULlisted and tested for safety. But safety precautions are necessary when stringing lights as well.

• Keep children away from fireplaces while they are in use.

• Use caution when putting lights outside. Purchase lights that specifically mention outside use. Have a person help you string lights when you must climb a ladder. Spotters can help prevent injuries.

• The glass and screens that cover fireplaces should be used to prevent sparks and embers from entering a room.

• Have fireplaces professionally cleaned each year and inspected by a certified chimney specialist. The United States Fire Administration says heating fires account for 36 percent of residential home fires each year. Clearing the chimney of creosote can reduce accidental chimney fires. • Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures so they don’t reach dangerous levels. • Use fire-resistant materials on walls around wood stoves.

• Do not leave fires unattended for long periods of time or allow them to burn overnight.

• Keep Christmas trees far away from fireplaces. Christmas trees can easily ignite, and the heat from the fire can dry them out over time.

• Do not overload circuits with too many lights strung together. Doing so is a fire hazard and can cause overheating.

• Shut off lights when you go to bed. You will be saving energy and preventing fire risk. • Keep dogs and cats away from Christmas lights. They can become tangled or chew on wires and get shocked.

T

he holiday season encompasses several weeks of frenetic activity, as men and women look to juggle abnormally busy social schedules with holiday shopping. While you might not be able to add hours to the day, there are certain measures anyone can take to make the hustle and bustle of the holiday season more efficient. Shopping swallows up a significant amount of time come the holiday season. According to the latest Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll, the average person will spend 15 hours shopping for presents. Women tend to spend twice as long as men in stores and online, with women logging 20 hours of holiday shopping compared to the 10 hours the average male spends shopping for holiday gifts. Making the most of holiday shopping trips can free up moments and reduce overall stress during the holidays. Condense your gift list How much time you spend on holiday shopping depends largely on the number of people on your gift list. Shortening that list can save time and money. This may be the year for adults to collectively decide to forego exchanging gifts in lieu of devoting more funds toward gifts for youngsters. Distant friends may no longer need to feel obligated to buy presents for one another. Opting to do a “Secret Santa” or another grab-bag style gift exchange can reduce the number of gifts you need to buy, saving time along the way. Keep a spreadsheet of your shopping list stored on your computer or smartphone so it can be easily modified year-to-year. Create a shopping strategy Millions of shoppers flock to stores on Black Friday to take advantage of doorbuster deals, and some even get all of their holiday shopping finished on this one afternoon. Others prefer to divide and conquer over a few weeks. Decide how you would like to economize your shopping so you won’t be

traveling from store to store wasting precious time. Organize your shopping list into certain categories. Then match up those categories according to the stores that cater to these items. For example, if your list mentions bedding for a new college student’s dorm room, curtains for an aunt and a set of beach towels for a friend who will be doing some post-holiday travel, group these purchases together and head to a bed-and-bath store. Such a plan in place can greatly cut down on your time spent shopping. Shop off-hours Consumer Reports says shoppers expect to wait in store check-out lines for an average of 3.5 to 4 hours this holiday season. Avoiding such situations can save you a significant amount of time, so shop during off-peak hours when you won’t be elbow-to-elbow with fellow shoppers. Take advantage of stores’ extended hours and shop later in the evening, when parents and their children will likely be preparing for bed and not waiting in line at the mall. Some retailers entice shoppers with early bird specials and open their doors very early, so shoppers looking to save time can make an effort to be the first person at the door when the store opens. If you must shop during a lunch hour, shop online where crowds are never a concern. Split up the shopping Spouses, family members and even friends can pool their shopping time and help others by tackling some of their purchases. Dividing the work shortens the time spent in stores, and a third party may have a keen eye to a deal or a unique gift when he or she is emotionally removed from the purchase. The average person finds time is of the essence come the holiday season. Prioritizing and economizing shopping is one way to make the season less hectic.

Secrets to holiday baking success Certain tips can ensure your holiday baking is successful.

B

aking is popular come the holiday season, when baked goods are often gifted or shared with family and friends at holiday gatherings. Individuals turn out sweet treats left and right, and these treats are often gobbled up by appreciative holiday revelers. Although some people have mastered baked goods, others can benefit from a few tricks of the trade. Utilize these tips to make holiday baking that much easier.

• Overworked cookie dough may result in dry cookies. Try not to handle dough more than is necessary to roll it out to desired thickness. When rolling the dough, put it between two pieces of waxed paper to reduce flour usage on the rolling pin. • When baking brownies or other bartype cookies, line the inside of the pan with greased aluminum foil. This way you can lift out the dessert and cut it neatly instead of risking sticking. • The same technique can be used

Experience Christmas in the Country

when baking cookies. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper and bake as directed. The cookies should slide right off when done, and you won’t have messy pans to wash afterward. • Double-check your oven temperature with a reliable thermometer to make sure it is accurate. This will help you bake more efficiently and adjust the time or temperature accordingly. • Many cookie doughs can be refrigerated or even frozen, so you can make a big batch and then spread out your baking as needed throughout the season.

P

Perhaps no time of year is as busy as the holiday season, when social engagements and holiday shopping combine to dominate so much of what is normally our free time. Additionally, holiday travel and late nights spent at work to make up for lost time also cut into our free time, leaving many people in search of ways to add more hours to the day. Though there’s no way to make a day last longer, there are ways to save some time this holiday season. * Go it alone. Holiday shopping can be very time consuming, but shoppers who decide to shop alone may find themselves more productive and focused on the task at hand. Rather than going from store to store and checking items off multiple shopping lists, shoppers who shop singularly can devote all of their attention to their own lists. * Shop online. Another way to save time when shopping for the holidays is to shop online. This saves you the time it takes to drive to and from the mall and walk around multiple stores, all the while saving you from the often frustrating and time-consuming experience of finding a parking space. In addition, you can shop online at any time of day. So rather than just eating lunch at your desk on your lunch hour or spending the last hour before you go to bed for the night idling away on the couch, you can make more efficient use of that time by doing some holiday shopping. * Plan ahead. Whether shopping for holiday gifts, taking the family to buy a Christmas tree or organizing a holiday dinner with friends, the more you can plan ahead of the holiday season the less time you will waste once the season hits full swing. For example, when choosing a weekend to go Christmas tree shopping, inform others a few

weeks in advance and let them know you want to go early to avoid crowds. This saves you time and might just help you land one of the best trees on the lot. The same principle of planning can be applied to other aspects of the holiday season as well. Planning a meal early allows you to gradually stock up on menu items, saving you the hassle of rushing to the store at the last minute or planning a menu in the days before the party when you will already have enough on your plate. * Don’t shy away from shortcuts when hosting holiday dinners. Hosting a holiday dinner is a big undertaking, one that often finds hosts spending a significant amount of time in the kitchen. But hosts can save time by taking some shortcuts regarding the menu. For instance, when hosting an especially large meal, don’t be afraid to buy some premade side dishes from a local grocery store or buy a bakery cake rather than whipping up your own homemade dessert. Guests will understand if you cut some corners in an effort to save some time, and the food will likely be just as delicious. * Stay home. Travel is a big commitment come the holiday season, but what about staying home this season? If the time commitment of traveling is something you truly want to avoid this year, invite some friends and family over to your home instead. You might be more busy on the day of the holiday, but you will save yourself the travel days you usually build into the holiday season. Parents of young children might prefer to stay home so they can create their own unique holiday memories, while those without children might just appreciate some peace and quiet during this hectic time of year.

ift cards are a staple of the holiday season. Often a go-to gift when other options just do not seem to suffice, gift cards remove the worry about whether or not the item will fit or if it’s the right color or model. Gift cards can make ideal gifts because they are chosen with the recipients’ likes and tastes in mind while allowing recipients to shop without spending their own money. Today’s gift cards are better than those of yesteryear, which typically came with expiration dates and onerous fees. E-gift cards, which can be purchased and redeemed online, are among the most convenient of all gift cards. Although gift cards have many positive attributes, it’s difficult to overlook that gift cards are viewed as a safe gift lacking in originality. But the National Retail Federation notes that in 2011, 57.7 percent of survey respondents said they would prefer to get a gift card that year. This ranks gift cards higher than electronics, clothing and accessories as desired gifts. Recipients of holiday cheer seemingly would like to pick out their own presents, which can ease the burden on gift-givers searching high and low for the perfect gifts. Still, giving a gift card can remove some of the excitement of unwrapping a mystery gift. By employing a few creative tips, gift cards can be fun and unique. Scavenger hunt Have the gift recipient work a little in a clever way for the gift. Plant clues around the house that will gradually lead to the hiding spot where the gift card is stashed. Clues can include witty poetic verses or tie into recipients’ personal interests. Nesting boxes Another way to present a gift card is to hide it inside of a box that looks like any other gift. However, once the person unwraps the gift,

he or she will discover another wrapped box inside. This prank can be repeated over and over as many times as desired until the gift card is unearthed. Gift basket A gift card can be ensconced with other trinkets and tied into a theme. For example, a gift card for a spa massage may be complemented by lotions, massage oil and a terry-cloth robe. These items can all be packaged together in a decorative basket to make the entire gift eye-catching and appealing. Themed wrapping Place the gift card inside of an item that epitomizes the gift. A card for a bookstore can be nestled inside of the pages of a classic book. A gift card to a hair salon can be attached to the end of a hairbrush. For those gifting to a favorite coffee shop, place the gift card inside of an empty coffee mug. Shopping savvy Offering a gift card as a present is entitling the recipient to a day of shopping. Wrap the card with a reusable shopping tote so that he or she can carry purchases inside. You can monogram the bag with initials or even decorate it. Otherwise, purchase a new wallet and place the gift card inside. Wrap the wallet and encourage the recipient to go on a spree. Special delivery For a creative spin, work with a retailer that offers home delivery service. Ask to have the gift card attached inside of a pizza box or nestled in a bouquet of flowers. When the recipient receives the delivery, he or she will be surprised by the added gift. Gift cards make convenient gifts, but they may not carry with them the panache of other holiday gifts.
