FISHING PROGRAM AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Fishing on Lake Erie will be presented on Monday, February 25, 7 p.m. at the Evans Historical Society Museum. Dick Smith, former Assemblyman and long time fisherman from Hamburg, will discuss fishing on Lake Erie in the past, during the present and the future. According to Dennis Kingan, Society Director, Mr. Smith is considered an expert on fishing due to his experience as a charter boat captain, a member of the Southtown’s Walleye Association, and a supporter of many issues that have faced the lake in the past. Mr. Smith was also instrumental in the establishment of a handicapped accessible boat, the “Excalibur,” which allows the disabled to enjoy fishing on the lake. Mr. Kingan indicated the presentation will be of interest to fishermen as well as historians as we learn about the vast resources of our nearby lake. The public is invited to the program at the Evans Historical Society Museum (old brick school house) on Erie Road in Evans Center.

EVANS-BRANT CHAMBER SMALL BUSINESS EDUCATION SEMINAR HELD

Tim Finney, an HR Advisor with Alcott HR (a PEO) was the speaker at the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce’s February event. Finney focused on Small Business Best Practices. “Many small businesses have trouble trying to hire and retain good people,” noted Finney. “Small companies, big companies...they all have the same problems in hiring and keeping good people.” Finney noted that the younger generation focuses on social media for their job hunt. More seasoned workers rely on networking and personal contacts to job hunt. He contrasted hiring and firing. “When hiring, small business owners look at the qualifications. When someone doesn’t work out, it’s because of who they are, how they behave, and not because of their qualifications.” The company should think about who they are and look for candidates who fit into their company’s value. “It should be a conversation, not an interview,” he suggested. “This is how you see if there’s a fit with your core values and beliefs.” Success in retention can be related to transparency in sharing information. “Employees want to know the fruits of their labor, to see how their efforts fit into the big picture,” described Finney. “Letting them in on the big picture, letting them know your goals -- that gives them confidence in their contribution.” Finney’s talk covered recruiting and retention; training; payroll; safety and risk management; and benefits. His power-point presentation is posted on the Chamber’s website at ebccny.org. His company, Alcott HR, is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) serving small and middle sized businesses. Alcott HR is an HR outsourcing resource that enables small businesses to focus on revenue generating activities. The company operates as an “employer of record” for tax purposes, which is known as co-employment, or “joint employment” in New York State law. It is a one-stop shop for payroll, benefits, recruitment and workers compensation, for companies with 5 to 150 employees. The next in the 2013 Spring Speaker series will be Fred Bristol from the Small Business Development Center. That event is on Thursday, March 14 at 6:30 pm, at the Evans Historical Museum on Route 5 and Bennett Road. Bristol will present on Customer Service: What Dies It Really Mean For Your Business? Bristol is a business advisor, educator and marketing strategist with senior leadership experience in sales, marketing, customer operations and process improvement.

MR. AMERICA - A NEW YORK STORE IS A ONE-STOP SHOP FOR U.S.-MADE GOODS What do your cell phone, jeans and sneakers have in common? They probably weren’t made in the U.S. Mark Andol (above) wants to change that. Andol owns the Made in America Store in Elma, NY, near Buffalo, which sells only products made in the United States. The store stocks more than 4,600 items, from jeans made in North Carolina to dog food made in Minnesota. In recent years, many U.S. businesses have moved their factories overseas to countries where labor and other costs are much lower. That can make it hard for American companies to compete. A t-shirt made in the U.S. could set you back $18, while an imported t-shirt may cost only $8. Andol’s store carries a wide range of items, but there are some things you won’t find. There are no electronics, for example, because Andol’s definition of Americanmade is very strict. Not only must the products themselves be completely American-made, but the packaging and even the printing must be done in the U.S. as well. That’s certainly not the case at stores like Walmart, which carry products manufactured overseas in countries like China, Mexico, Taiwan, Bangladesh, and Thailand. An estimated 70 percent of the items sold at Walmart are made in China. Recently, however, manufacturing in the U.S. has started to show signs of life. Just last month, Apple announced that it will start making some of its computers in the U.S. Andol says that American consumers want more everyday items, like toys and clothes, to be manufactured in the U.S. They worry that more American workers will lose their jobs if U.S. factories continue to move overseas. “I’ve done the research for the customer,” says Andol. “If they come through the door, they know they’re helping an American worker and an American factory.” Rebecca Zissou
