BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF LAKE SHORE SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER TO SENIORS

During the month of December, members of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore’s Torch Club (community service club) made homemade Christmas confections to distribute to over 70 senior citizens in the Town of Evans. Torch Clubs are chartered, small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. In the true spirit of holiday giving, Torch Club members honed new culinary techniques to make chocolate lollipops, chocolate molded candy; and chocolate covered raisins, pretzels, marshmallows, and trail mix under the direction of community members Patti Latimore and Lynn Krajacic. The candy was bagged up with cookies, hard candy, and of course the traditional candy canes and delivered to the residents of the Holly Housing, St. John’s Place, and Steepleview housing complexes. A Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their life. “It is a great feeling to give back to the community that has been so generous to us (the Club) over the past year,” said Club Unit Director, Andrea Sunday. “The members really loved making the treats with Patti and Lynn. Some members even mentioned that they knew some of the senior residents.” The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore does not receive government funding. In addition to membership fees, the Lake Shore Advisory Council is actively engaged in fundraising efforts, including an annual Golf Tournament (2008 - 2010); All Decked Out for Summer (patio set) raffle; New Year’s Eve Disco (2010-2012); Annual 5K Run/Walk (2009-2012); Corporate and individual giving campaigns (IJTO); Advisory Council Membership; and Foundation requests. If you would like to donate or be a part of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore’s Advisory Council, please contact Andrea Sunday, Unit Director at 716-926-2119. __________

IMMACULATA ACADEMY PAYS TRIBUTE TO SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY VICTIMS

Concert Choir students at Immaculata Academy surprised the rest of the school recently by paying tribute to the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims through song. After the scheduled Christmas play, members of the Concert Choir took their places on the stage, each holding a star with the name and age of a victim on them, and sang “What Do the Stars Do?” for the rest of the school. Two sophomores, Emily and Katie Simon, came up with the idea. Kathleen Bassett, Music Director at the Academy said, “They came to me in the morning and pronounced, ‘This is what we want to do today.’ It was an incredibly moving event.” In addition, letters have been written by entire class homerooms, as well as, individual students, faculty and staff to send to Newtown, Connecticut to offer empathy and encouragement, along with pictures from the tribute and a dvd of the song performance. About Immaculata Academy: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximizes her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. LS FRESHMAN SEMINAR STUDENTS STUDY BULLYING

Currently, in Lake Shore 2016: Freshman Seminar, students are learning the serious truths that pertain to adolescent bullying and just what it means to have dignity for all. In case you are not aware, there is a new anti-bullying law in New York State named the Dignity for All Students' Act (D.F.A.S.A.). Basically, this law now states that no student has the right to bully or take the dignity away from any other student verbally (in person or through social media), socially or physically. Every student at Lake Shore Central, and New York state in general, has the right to earn his or her education in a safe environment free from bullying and/or cyber-bullying (texting, facebook, Twitter etc.). Understanding this, students have been learning about the negative consequences that can result from bullying such as people hurting themselves or hurting others. Lake Shore freshmen understand that bullying is a universal problem that affects us all (even bystanders) if not prevented and dealt with proactively. Specifically, students have been analyzing and reading about the role of communication as it relates to bullying in both causing and stopping bullying. They have learned that the old saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me..." is not really true; words do hurt, and mean names can leave psychological scars that last a lifetime. Using positive and proactive language, students have been applying the power of communication (compliments) to both prevent and put off bullying. Students have been role-playing using such techniques verses sitting back and being bystanders. The goal of this unit to ensure our students understand that bullying is not only wrong, but it is now illegal too. Parents, you may do your part by talking to your children about the Dignity Act and by keeping a close eye on your children's social-media usage. Pictured: Lake Shore freshmen role playing and evaluating different types of bullying and positive communication tactics. _________

RETURNABLE CAN & BOTTLE DRIVE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2013 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

We are raising funds to go on the National Band Tour to New York City in April, 2013. PLEASE SAVE all of your returnable bottles and cans (aluminum, glass or plastic), including water bottles, or donate your bottle receipts as a cash donation. Band members will be picking up all of the returnable donations door to door, or you can drop them off at the Angola Fire Hall or at the Green Zone located on Erie Road, Angola, and tell them to credit ‘Lake Shore Band’.

For very large donations, or, if you have any questions, please call Director of Bands, Eric Blodgett at 926-2117 prior to Feb. 9th.

LAKE SHORE CENTRAL SCHOOLS Office of the Superintendent In 1992 the Lake Shore Central School District developed the Wall of Fame program for recognizing the outstanding achievements of alumni of the district. These individuals are people who, after graduation, greatly contributed to the well being of our society through their hard work, talents and leadership. Nominees must be a graduate of at least 15 years and may not currently be an employee of the Lake Shore Central School District. Every other year the district holds an induction ceremony in May honoring new inductees. Once again, we have begun the process of selecting a new class for induction. If you know of any alumni who should be considered for this honor, we ask that you provide us with a completed application by Monday, February 25, 2013. Applications are available in the District Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, NY, and on our website www.lakeshorecsd.org, under “Our District”, “District Forms”. Each nominee will be reviewed by the district committee for possible induction into the “Wall of Fame”. Individuals who are selected will be afforded a place on the “wall” with a picture and biographical information. In addition, it will be expected that the honoree address our high school students, with a reception being held in their honor. LS BOYS VARSITY SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM DEFEATS PIONEER

The Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving Team defeated Pioneer on January 30th. An unforgetable performance was turned in by David Dombrowski, Jon Ball, Fred Ball and Jacob Zelak in the first relay, which set the tone for the entire meet. Mike Kushner, Kyle Tezanos and Mitchell Considine all swam E.C.I.C. qualifing times in the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly respectfully. Tyler Wodja continued his pursuit of high flying acrobatics on the diving board leaving the crowd wanting more. Just when the full house thought they saw everything that was to be seen; the relay team of Austin Smith, Luke Vail, Jon Ball and Danny Abrams took the last relay in dramatic fashion. With the win, the Eagles are the E.C.I.C. Division 3 Champions with an undefeated record. __________

HANDS ON HEALTH CHIROPRACTIC RIBBON CUTTING

The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon-cutting for Hands on Health Chiropractic, at 176 Lake Street in the Village of Angola. The Chamber and Dr. Andrea Herold celebrated the Grand Opening of this new business providing chiropractic services. "Whether you suffer from chronic pain, have had a recent injury, or you are just looking to improve your quality of life, Chiropractic has something for you," described Dr. Herold. "Hands on Health Chiropractic welcomes you to discover chiropractic in a comfortable, caring location." Dr. Andrea Herold is a 2012 graduate of D’Youville College where she earned her degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Prior to attending D’Youville College, Dr. Herold studied at St. John Fisher College where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Dr. Herold is proud to call herself a lifelong resident of Angola- a village she knows and loves, and is happy to make it the home to Hands on Health Chiropractic. Developing a patient centered clinic where everyone feels comfortable with their individual care plan is important to Dr. Herold. “It is my hope that every patient I see feels comfortable in my office. I want them to understand what I’m doing, experience results and believe in chiropractic as much as I do!” Photograph: left to right: Chamber director Terra Perry, family and friends of Dr. Andrea Herold (cutting the ribbon), director Nicole Manges and Vice-president Darlene McDonough, Ed.D. __________
