Thank You

In Memory of Michael J. Krajacic Sr.

The family of the late Michael J. Krajacic Sr., who passed away on February 16, 2013, wish to express our deepest appreciation to our family, friends and organizations that offered support during the bereavement of our father. The outpouring of kindness and sympathy that we received during our period of mourning was heart warming and a comfort to our family as we said good-bye to a great man. The love and care that we received showed that our father touched a lot of people in this community, as well as friends, and loved ones all over the country. We would especially like to thank the Latimore & Schiavone Funeral Home, Lake Erie Beach Fire Hall, Evans Center Fire Hall, Evans Police, the members of the AMVETS, the members of the VFW, Rev. John S. Kwiecien, Pastor Most Precious Blood Church and members of the parish, The Holy Name Society at Most Precious Blood Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society and the numerous members of our family and friends that donated food, time and services to comfort us during this difficult time. Finally, we would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at the Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving, NY for the love, kindness and care that Dad received while he was there. You went above the call of duty to make our Dad feel at home. Thank you and God Bless all of you, Mike, Gary, Tom, and Jack Krajacic and our families

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MEMBERS OF THE MONTH PROGRAM

The staff at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is on the lookout for Club kids meeting the criteria for the new Member of the Month program (MOTM). The honor of being designated Member of the Month will be awarded to one female and one male Club kid every month. In addition to bragging rights, the members of the month receive a certificate of recognition and a Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore t-shirt. There is also a bulletin board at the Club devoted to showcasing the accolade for members, parents and staff. A short bio and list of character traits will also be published in the Angola Pennysaver. To be considered as a potential Member of the Month, members must embody the character values of the Boys and Girls Club of America which is defined as “the way one behaves when no one is looking”. MOTM candidates should be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports and games, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. “Choosing the Member of the Month was difficult”, says Unit Director Andrea Sunday. “There are so many members that have good character and participate in a variety of Club programs. I am pleased to say that we have a lot of great kids at our Club.” After debate and discussion, the staff awarded the January Members of the Month status to: Jocelynn Wagner and Samuel Eschberger. Jocelynn (age 11) is a 5th grade student at A.J. Schmidt elementary school. Her teacher is Mrs. Galenda and her favorite subject is science. While Jocelynn is at the Club she likes helping people. Sam is in Mrs. Prizel’s second grade class and his favorite subject is science. While Sam is at the Club his two best friends Tava and Sheridan are never far behind. Sam’s favorite thing to do at the Club is play on the computers in the Power Hour room (homework help and computer lab). Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the Month, Samantha Carbone. Samantha was chosen as the Student of the Month for her dedication to her school work, helping others with their homework, and for completing extra Project Learn academic worksheets and activities in the Power Hour room. Members earn points for completing their homework and participating in Project Learn activities In the Power Hour room. Samantha has earned the most points out of all of the members so far this year! Samantha (age 9) attends 4th grade at the J.T. Waugh elementary school. Her teacher is Mrs. Schultz and her favorite subject is math. Samantha also enjoys reading books from the Junie B. LOCAL RESIDENTS PLAY IN US HOCKEY LEAGUE JUNIOR GAME

A United States Hockey League Junior game was recently held in Youngstown, Ohio, where three local boys, were playing each other. The boys, Kyle Eastman (Tri-City Storm), Kyle Mackey and Zachary Evancho (Youngstown Phantoms) are all from the Town of Evans and have been friends throughout their lives. The Covelli Centre, where they played in Youngstown, is a beautiful arena with all the excitement of a professional game; music, fan interactive games and a boatload of talented young men on both teams, playing their hearts out for their friends and families. The boys were cheered on by more than 40 town of Evans friends, parents, cousins and siblings who eagerly drove almost three hours to watch them play. Growing up in this town says a lot. The boys and their dozens of friends who came to watch them, have played hockey and baseball together since they were four and five years old. They’ve traveled all over the United States and Canada together, driving thousands of miles in the families’ vehicles for hockey and baseball but also in our own community, playing basketball, volleyball, fishing, watching fireworks on the beach and just sitting in the backyard around a bonfire. They’ve won and lost tournaments together. Now they are 17 and 18. They’ve advanced to different teams, different sports, gone to different cities, and selected to follow their own hopes and dreams. The commitment of all of these families, those on the ice and those who came to watch, have ensured these kids follow through with practices, studies and most of all respect for one another. It didn’t matter which of these boys stepped on the ice that night. The chants of Kyle Eastman, Kyle Mackey, and Zach Evancho were heard throughout the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. That commitment of friendship that started in those early years and now is carrying through their teens. It’s the support of cheering each other on, and being proud of their friends' successes. Whether it was on the baseball diamonds in Evans during a house game when they were ten years old and one of them hit a V off their buddy pitching, or they battled on the ice taking the puck from one another at 14, the young people on the ice and in the stands have always exhibited loyalty, friendship and commitment to one another. It’s truly what makes up our great community, the Town of Evans. __________

The group also encourages Republicans to consider becoming members of the local committee. Positions to be filled in the election include: Councilman, Town Clerk, Justice, Highway Superintendent. Anyone interested in applying for the Republican endorsement of any of these positions should send a letter and resume to: Jack Kuebler, Chairman, Evans Republican Committee, P.O. Box 752, Derby, NY 14047. Prospective committee members should call the chairman at 947-5788. __________

EVANS REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE TAKES STAND ON NYS GUN LAW

At its February meeting, members of the Evans Republican Committee voted to express their opposition to the recently enacted New York State gun law. Viewing the law as an infringement on the rights protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, members wanted to join the growing number of state committees and groups in calling for the repeal of this law. According to anti-gun law groups across the state, New York already has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country. Historically, the law provides that no New Yorkers can possess a handgun without a permit, which is issued only after a thorough police and judicial investigation, sometimes taking up to six months or more. In addition, no New Yorker with a felony conviction or a history of mental illness hospitalization may possess any firearm. The new law, however, restricts types of guns and ammunition and is considered an infringement on Second Amendment rights. __________

VA WESTERN NEW YORK HEALTHCARE SYSTEM OFFERS E-DONATE TO SUPPORT LOCAL VETERANS

VA Western New York Healthcare System announced the availability of E-Donate, an online donation option at www.buffalo.va.gov that will provide community members who wish to give back to Veterans at the medical center a simple and safe way to pledge their support to the fund of their choice. “We’ve known for years that our citizens want to show their support to the service members who defended their freedoms,” said Brian Stiller, Medical Center Director. “While not everyone will have the time to volunteer, now anyone can take five minutes online to thank Veterans in any number of ways.” The E-Donate option allows donors to select from a number of funds at the medical center they wish to donate to. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) administrative costs are appropriated, so donors can be sure 100 percent of their donations go to the funds they select and the Veteran patients they are choosing to support. “Donated money at our medical center goes to Veteran programs like the National Veterans Golden Age Games and holiday gifts for Veterans,” said Mark Francis, Voluntary Service Manager. “People would be amazed if they could see how far their dollar goes toward making a difference in the lives of our Veterans.” Donors can find the E-Donate button at www.buffalo. va.gov. The actual donation is made through a secure site at the Department of Treasury’s www.pay.gov. A minimum of $5 is required for online donation. __________

IMMACULATA ACADEMY 1000+ POINT SCORER HEINOLD SIGNS WITH DAEMEN

January 30th was a big day for Immaculata Academy senior Taylor Heinold. Not only did she score 38 points in a match against Eden and have 15 rebounds with 6 blocked shots to help lead the IA Bears to a 61-36 victory, but she accepted a scholarship from Daemen College to play NCAA Division II basketball next year. With friends, family, teachers, staff, and coach looking on, Heinold sat with her parents and signed her national letter of intent. “It’s just been so wonderful to get to see Taylor grow and progress over these past few years. We’re all really proud of her and are excited that she chose a school close to home. This way, we can get out to see a few games and follow her college career,” Immaculata Head Coach Andrea Drabik stated. Heinold comes from a family of basketball players. Her father, Chris Heinold, also achieved the 1000 point mark and continued on to play basketball for Canisius College. Taylor also gets to play alongside her younger sister Jordan on the Varsity Team. Jordan, who is a freshman, is on track to carry-on her family’s legacy, as well. Taylor is second on the IA Bears’ all-time scoring list. About Immaculata Academy: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximizes her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. In Appreciation SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC GRADE 2 USES POWERPOINT

Mrs. Kathy Walters Grade 2 class recently made habitat diorama's with their favorite animal. Each student had to pick an animal and then do research. They had to answer questions like; Where do they live, what do they eat, do they give birth, do they hibernate & what are their predators. The follow up to that project was to make a PowerPoint presentation and then present their animal to the class. Pictured is Max Barney with his PowerPoint on bobcats while Mrs. Walters looks on. __________

What If This Happened To You At The Chiropractor? Do you suffer from health problems or painful joints? Have you thought of trying chiropractic but are a bit nervous because of what you heard? If you answered yes, this could be the most eye-opening article you’ll ever read. It’s true, something definitely could happen to you if you visit a chiropractor, and I’ll get to that in a minute. My name is Dr. Derek Bell. I am a chiropractor here in Derby and I’m here to set the record straight on chiropractic. “Does Chiropractic Really Work?” Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years, and has been used to help everyone from tiny babies to the elderly. Even top sports stars and entertainers… like Tiger Woods, Emmitt Smith, Tony Robbins, Joe Montana, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. These professional athletes have the money to hire any kind of doctors they want, yet they choose to have a chiropractor on their team.

“Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” -- Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery “Isn’t Chiropractic Just For Back Pain?” Chiropractic works great for all kinds of pain, at our office we’ve helped patients with a wide range of problems.

LAKE SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT

The Lake Shore Middle School Music Department has been a flurry of activity as students have been preparing for ECMEA Solo Festivals and All County Ensembles! This year, nearly fifty 6th, 7th and 8th graders prepared for All County auditions and solo festivals. Students worked hard preparing scales, sight-reading and solo literature and performed for judges in January. All of the students did a fantastic job and a large number of them were selected for ensembles based on their auditions! Students worked with Mrs. Anna Agro (chorus), Ms. Alicia Louttit (orchestra), Ms. Jennifer Meyer-Davis (band) and Mrs. Carrie Poissant (band) in preparation for the festivals. The following students have been selected for this year’s ensembles: Band Students: Mackenzie Fox (clarinet-band), Audrey Parks (clarinet-band), Brendan Wheeler (tromboneorchestra) and alternates Emily Leitten (flute), Madison Miranda (clarinet), Ajay Cybulski (tenor saxophone), Justin Holland (trumpet), Robert Wolf (trumpet), Hanna Prince (trombone), Adam Brzozowicz (baritone), Aaron Freeman (percussion) and Sophia Koenig (percussion) Orchestra Students: Lauren Ingrao (violin), Becket Panfil (violin) and alternate Zachary Wilson (violin) Chorus Students (SSA Chorus): Emily Birkemeier, Natalie Cummings, Aryn Fitzgerald and Carissa Littlejohn This year, Lake Shore is hosting the ECMEA Junior High All County South Festival! Please come see these talented students perform on Saturday, March 15, 2013. Band and SSA Chorus students will perform at 1:00 p.m. in the LSHS Auditorium. Orchestra and SATB Chorus will perform at 4:00 p.m. in the same venue. Pictured below: First row, left to right: Becket Panfil, Robert Wolf, Aryn Fitzgerald, Zachary Wilson and Aaron Freeman. SCS GRADE 4 LONGHOUSE PROJECT

The fourth graders in Mrs. Jennifer Hill's class at Southtowns Catholic School ended National Native American Heritage month by creating longhouses. Longhouses are homes that were used by the Haudenosaunee people. They were made with pole frames and elm bark covering. Longhouses could be 200 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet high. Inside the longhouse, raised platforms created a second story, which was used for storage and sleeping space. Mats and wood screens divided the longhouse into separate rooms. Each longhouse housed an entire clan-- as many as 60 people! The project had to have a smoke hole, a storage shelf with food, a sleeping shelf with sleeping bags, a door, a place to dry meat and could show any other detail that the students could think of. They were amazing! Pictured: Quinn Griffin, Christian Kehoe, Eric Bowman & Emma Katra. __________

TIMBERBUILT VISITS SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Mr. James Rath recently visited the Southtowns Catholic 5th grade to share his occupation with them. Mr. Rath works for Timberbuilt, a company who builds structures without the use of nails. He shared how important math skills are to construction. Students were able to use their knowledge of fractions to measure using a tape measure and a square. They marked off pieces of wood, which will be cut and assembled into the frame of a doghouse at a later date. IMMACULATA ACADEMY RAISES OVER $1,250 FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

Immaculata Academy’s Sports Marketing class didn’t just help themselves by doing their homework, they helped others. On Friday, January 18, during Immaculata Academy’s basketball games against Hamburg High School, they hosted a “Coaches v. Cancer” event. With standing room only in the Immaculata gym, the IA Bears took the court in black and pink game-day shirts and black socks donning a pink awareness ribbon, while the referees used pink whistles. American Cancer Society representative JoAnna Jacob came to the event and was thrilled to see how the event panned out and all of the excitement surrounding it, “Since 1993, the Coaches vs. Cancer program has increased cancer awareness, promoted healthy living, and raised nearly $90 million for the American Cancer Society's lifesaving work--and the number of feats attained by this program is going to only increase. The Immaculata Academy community successfully came together this January to make a difference in the fight against cancer, and we look forward to continuing to work with this effortful group of individuals.” In addition to admission to the event, proceeds were raised with a 50/50, raffle baskets, and concessions. Prior to the event, funds were raised through an in-school bake sale and dress down day. In all, over $1,250 was raised for the American Cancer Society. Over 600 of the best student musicians in grades 7, 8 & 9 will spend many hours in rehearsal preparing for a Saturday afternoon concert. Students had to audition back in January on a solo, scales and sight reading. Those receiving the top scores on each instrument or voice part were selected to be in the orchestra, band or choruses. The entire music staff will be on hand all weekend as well as some student and parent volunteers to help things run smoothly. After the intensive rehearsals on both days there will be 2 concerts. The first is at 1:30pm and will feature the band and SSA chorus. The second is at 4pm with the orchestra and SATB chorus. Admission is $5 and is open to the public. __________

HORNBERGER WINS SILVER MEDAL AT STATE MEET

Over the weekend, TJ Hornberger and Calvin Butlak competed in the 2013 NYSPHSAA Indoor State Championship at Cornell University. TJ Hornberger competed in the 1600m run against the top mile runners in the state. He ran a very smart race and stayed with the pack until making his move with 400m left in the race. He finished behind the number one runner and senior, Nick Ryan, for 2nd place and the silver medal with a time of 4:17.24. His previous best time was 4:19 from Outdoor Track States last spring. Sophomore Calvin Butlak ran the 3200m race in his first ever state track appearance. Butlak ran well through the one mile mark coming through at a very fast time of 4:53 for his first mile. He ended up finishing at 10:10 for the 3200m which is only one second off his best time. As a sophomore, this puts him in good position to continue for outdoor to be one of the top 2 mile runners in the state. Both Hornberger and Butlak had very successful seasons and will be looking forward to the Outdoor Track season. __________

LOCAL RESIDENT ON TV SHOW

Local resident and car enthusiast Tom Partridge was on a TV Show called Graveyard Carz on January 8th. “It all happened as a joke” he said. When he was a little kid in Buffalo he fell in love with a car he saw in a showroom “with a big wing on the back”. He even had his dad build him a pinewood Derby with a wing. In 2008, while killing time on the internet, by accident he found a “project” 1969 Dodge Daytona for sale. He bought the car and then started to gather the missing parts. In June of 2011 he called a lady about a part that was on ebay and made a joke about how cool it would be to have his car restored on a TV show. Ironically, she told him of a man she knew, Mark Worman, that was starting a new reality show called Graveyard Carz. It is the first show to restore old muscle cars back to original condition. “The next day Mark called me and we made a deal to have him do the car” he said. Tom flew out to Springfield, Oregon in August 2011 for filming after the car was shipped. He says that this wasn’t one of those start and finish in one episode shows. He said “these guys take their time and do it right, so my car won’t be finished until Season III comes out”. Tom will have the car this summer, so if you see a car around town with a 2 foot wing on the back, you’ll know who it is.

ACADEMY STUDENTS HONE INTERVIEW SKILLS

Lake Shore High School Academy of Business & Finance Juniors met with local area business partners in January to participate in mock job interviews. The students from Mrs. Marla Schifano’s Business Education Employability Portfolio class spent a semester putting together their professional portfolios that they showcased in their interviews. The students prepared cover letters and resumes and included academic and extra curricular awards in their portfolios. The class prepares students for their upcoming summer internships. Their portfolios showcase projects that have helped them to develop specific skills for employability. The Niagara Frontier Industry Education Council, sponsors the Business Education Employability Portfolio Class also know as “BEEP”. After the successful completion of their portfolios, students met with local area business partners to participate in an interview. Pictured above, Lou Atti from Evans Agency interviewed Josh Alberts to learn more about the skills he possesses that prove he would be an employable intern. Business partners from AXA Financial, Evans Bank, Queen City Professionals, Empire Realty, Farrell & Farrell Law Office and Bryant & Stratton also assisted with the interview process. Students who were granted their employability certificates will now be eligible to interview for paid summer internships hosted by local area business partners. The Academy Program is designed to give students “real world experiences” to prepare them for the world of work. __________
