VISIONS OF BUFFALO BEFORE 1916.

In 1916 the City of Buffalo was a ‘booming’ city. Much of its prosperity was a result of its location on Lake Erie as well as the many railroads that served the area. Buffalo was a transportation center with the railroad playing a very important role in the growth of the city. Mr. Ron Dukarm will present an unique view of the city prior to 1916 through the ‘eyes’ of the railroads at the monthly meeting of the Evans Historical Society. Mr. Dukarm is Vice President of the new Heritage Discovery Center in Buffalo. He is the author of many magazine articles and a book on railroading. A power point presentation will focus on the Lackawanna Railroad and the development of the waterfront. The “Lackawanna” served the grain elevators, mills and docks. It also circled the city and served the East side and the Black Rock sections of the city. Currently the early Lackawanna Railroad freight house at the foot of Main Street houses the Light Rail Transit System cars (subway/ trolley). The presentation will be in the Society’s Museum in Evans Center on Monday, March 25th. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the 1857 brick school house on Route 5 at North Main Street. Admission is free and the public is invited. _________

School & Community News AREA STUDENTS COMPETE AT 24TH ANNUAL SKILLSUSA CONFERENCE HELD AT ALFRED STATE

IMMACULATA ACADEMY STUDENTS BATTLE IT OUT IN SPIRIT WEEK

In a very close competition, the senior class at Immaculata Academy reigned victorious at this year’s annual Spirit Week. Each class competed throughout the week in various activities including hallway decorating, puzzle assembly, twin competitions, lip syncs, relay races and more. Neck-in-neck all week, the seniors ended up clinching the win by the narrow margin of one point in the final contest of the week: donut-eating. Students also had themed dress days like Decade Day, Pajama Day, Twin Day, Mismatch Day, and Class Color Day. Each class claims a color their freshman year and uses that color throughout their four years at IA, specifically during Spirit Week. A favorite time of year for students and faculty alike, the activities help to promote teamwork, class pride, and school pride. About Immaculata Academy: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximizes her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS DUE

New York State Education law requires that requests for special transportation be filed with local Boards of Education by April 1st each year. Since April 1st falls over Spring Recess, the District will accept transportation requests through April 10th. Private Parochial Request Forms are available on our website, www.lakeshorcsd.org, under “Services”, “Transportation Services”, and click on “Forms”. Once the proper form is completed, it should be submitted to the District’s Transportation Office located at 8710 North Main Street, Angola, NY 14006. This announcement has been published to alert parents of such students, or prospective students, to inquire as to the procedure to be used if they are not clear relative to the required April 1 annual transportation request filing deadline. Parents who have questions concerning filing procedures for schools within the 15-mile transportation limit, which is established by New York State Education Law, should call the Superintendent of Schools or the Transportation Supervisor. They can be reached at 926-2201 or 926-2241, respectively.

SCHOOL TRANSFERS FOR NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS

Pursuant to an agreement between the New York State Education Department and the Lake Shore (Evans-Brant) Central School District, Native American children residing within the Cattaraugus Reservation may attend the Lake Shore Central Schools by filing an application for transfer by April 15th each year. Such application for September enrollment shall be effective upon approval by the Lake Shore Superintendent, which approval or denial and the reasons therefore shall be set forth in writing. The state shall provide transportation for any child transferring under this section. All requests for the transfer of Native American children residing within the Cattaraugus Reservation should be addressed to James Przepasniak, Superintendent of Schools, Lake Shore Central Schools, 959 Beach Road, Angola, NY 14006, by April 15th.

Pastor Don has lived in Evans for about 35 some years now, and has proved time and time again to the Community that he is a faithful, lawful, giving and willing citizen. Of course having many commitments to his home parish, St. John Lutheran, and bringing many programs to our small tight knit community Church, Pastor Don has always had a servants heart to the people, places, organizations and events within our Community, and beyond. He has continually gone above and beyond his duties as Pastor to giving unselfishly of his time and energy elsewhere within this wonderful Community in which we live. Pastor Don is a long-standing citizen of this community, a faithful friend, and wonderful role model for all those he comes in contact with. He is a wonderful man who has never asked for the spotlight, but has always given selflessly of himself to his family, Church family, and Community family. We are blessed to have him.
