2ND ANNUAL LAKE ERIE BEACH NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP

The Lake Erie Beach Neighborhood Revitalization Task Force, in collaboration with the Town of Evans and Lake Erie Beach Fire Company, are making plans for the 2nd annual neighborhood-wide clean-up for the Lake Erie Beach area to be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 8 AM to 1 PM (rain or shine event) . The Lake Erie Beach Fire Hall (9483 Lakeshore Road) will serve as the host the day of the event; mobilizing volunteers in the morning and serving as the drop-off location for the trash collected that day. The clean-up will focus on vacant lots, parks and recreational areas, and streets that are major thoroughfares in Lake Erie Beach area. The clean-up will also include the neighborhood commercial area along Old Lakeshore Road. “We are starting to see some positive changes in the Lake Erie Beach community,” said Lori Szewczyk Director of Community Development for the Town of Evans. “The clean-up is meant to encourage community pride among the residents of Lake Erie Beach that will stretch beyond this one-day event,” she said. The LEB Task Force is looking for volunteers to assist with the concentrated effort or organize a clean-up on their own block. This one-day event will require community support from those willing to volunteer time, talent and resources. Should you be interested in serving as a volunteer or zone coordinator to help beautify your neighborhood, please contact Lori Szewczyk at 549-3915 or email at lszewczyk@townofevans.org. _________

THE COMEBACK KIDS

Joe and Colleen Sliz are long time Derby residents and met when they both worked at Tops in Derby. Joe started there in December of 1985, and Colleen had already been working there. Their first date was January 4th, 1986. And as they say, the rest is history. However, the path to the present day has not been an easy one. Both grew up with families that loved music. While in junior high school, Colleen played in a band named ‘Reminiscence’ to which she fondly refers to as a “bubble gum band.” Joe had been in bands also. In 1994 and 1995 Joe and Colleen were in a band called ‘Restless Gypsy’ together. Things didn’t work out and the band folded. They sold the equipment and put the band idea to bed at that time. Colleen still had the drive to perform, so with the help of her father and some of his leftover equipment, she and her mother started a karaoke show. They were called the Ryans. However, around June 2005, Joe started to have some back pain that just wouldn’t go away. The pain was serious, and there were many months of doctors’ visits and tests to follow. The karaoke show was sidelined in November. After seeing many specialists, he received a message on his answering machine from a neurosurgeon who determined that Joe had a tumor in his back. A lump also formed on the back of his head, under his arm and in his leg. They removed the lump under his arm which turned out to be the size of a baseball. Joe was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and was paired with Dr. Zale Bernstein at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. At first Joe didn’t like him, but learned to love him. He said, “He saved my life.” Joe would look things up online and found the statistics said he had a 27% survival rate. That was when he quit looking up his problems online. After extensive treatments, Joe was in remission in June 2006. However, his doctor said it wasn’t “if” the cancer would return it was “when?” Then, in November 2006 it did return, and Joe went thru the chemotherapy treatments again. In June 2007 he went into remission again and has been okay since. In September of 2007 the Uncle Fester Band was formed and began establishing themselves in the Buffalo music scene. Now with Joe and Colleen both in the band, they were excited to be performing together. In July of 2011, Colleen had a small spot on her neck that

she thought was an insect bite. When it didn’t get better quickly and seemed to be getting bigger Colleen immediately made an appointment to see a doctor. Her primary physician was not able to figure out what was going on. She ended up going to Roswell Park and was later diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Being comfortable with Dr. Bernstein and the wonderful care Joe received, she requested to be under doctor Bernstein’s care. Colleen felt it was much easier for her to go thru this after already being thru so much with Joe. She talked of keeping a very positive attitude, and to help keep her spirits high, Joe would frequently joke with and tease Colleen saying things like “you have sissy cancer.” Joe and Colleen still had the drive to get the band going again, Joe kept playing his drums, and Colleen would gradually build up her strength to sing again. After a brief scare at Roswell in July due to a lack of communication between departments, Colleen has been cancer free and feeling great. With the rebuilding of the band and the addition of a new member, I was fortunate to meet Joe and Colleen thru their new guitarist, Ricky Chudzinski. I was asked to take band photos and have kept in touch since. Colleen has always been very nervous before a gig, but the first day back on stage was especially nerve racking. The Uncle Fester Band played their first gig at the Meadowbrook Bar in Derby on March 2nd. They both felt it was so great to be back performing and doing what they loved. The bar was packed, and even a long time friend of Colleen’s (also a former member of the “bubble gum band”) came to town from Pennsylvania to show his support. This journey filled with challenges has brought the couple closer together, and they have a greater appreciation for the simple things in life, like sunsets, watching the clouds go bye and, of course, their music. Joe said of Roswell that there is actually a feeling of missing being taken care of there. They both agreed the food was great there, and Joe called it “The TajMahal of Hospitals.” He said, “it is an awesome hotel that you never want to ‘check in’ to.” Please come out and see the band soon and say hello to Colleen and Joe. On Sat April 27 they will be at the American Legion Post 928 in Derby. On Sat. May 18th they will be at J&M’s West End Inn in Hamburg. Again on Sat. August 24th they will be at the American Legion and on September 28th they will be at the Meadowbrook again. Please consult their website at www.UncleFesterBand.com for information and their complete schedule. Picture 1 - Uncle Fester Band Picture 2 - Joe & Colleen Sliz with Mellissa Holmes from Channel 2. HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO HOST “IRISH” AUTHOR

On Monday, April 22nd at 7 p.m. the Evans Historical Society will present a program on Buffalo’s Old First Ward. Mr. Tim Bohen, author of “Against the Grain, The History of Buffalo’s First Ward,” will provide a power point presentation that focuses on the many Irish families who lived in the First Ward. Mr. Bohen mentioned that many generations of the families lived in the area. Their kids grew up together and then often intermarried. He also indicated that the neighborhood was a unique mix of industrial and residential structures. Many photos of the families and buildings in the area will be shown. The public is invited to the program, which will be held at the society’s museum on Route 5 in Evans Center. Mr. Joseph Pisarski, President of the Historical Society, mentioned manyh of Evans’ residents are descendants of the Irish families in the First Ward and would certainly enjoy learning more about past generations. Mr. Bohen’s book will also be available for purchase. _________

School News LS SENIOR HIGH BANDS PREPARE TO COMPETE IN NYC

LAKE SHORE MUSIC DEPARTMENT DISTRICT JAZZ CONCERT

On Thursday, April 25th at 7:30pm in the High School Auditorium, the Lake Shore Music Department will be holding the 3rd Annual District Jazz Concert featuring jazz ensembles from each level and a special guest artist, jazz trombonist, Mr. Ken Crane. Ken Crane is a professional jazz trombone player from NY City. At the age of 19 Ken left the Berklee College of Music to go on the road full time as lead trombone and jazz soloist with big bands such as: Maynard Fergusson, Clark Terry, Buddy Rich, to name a few. He also got to accompany a number of great jazz singers such as Frank Sinatra (Sr. and Jr.), Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, Sammy Davis, Jr. Since moving upstate, Ken can be heard throughout Western New York in a variety of settings including: Chautauqua Symphony, Southern Tier Swing, Family Life Network Musicals, Bemus Bay Pops, Buffalo Philharmonic and Gap Mangione’s Big Band. Playing small group jazz and fusion original music with his family members and a few key Rochester/Buffalo area rhythm section players is one of those settings. Ken has taught instrumental music at several different schools in Western NY over the past 20 years. He is currently teaching at Portville Central School. Ken is also an adjunct professor of jazz, contemporary music theory, and low brass at several colleges: Houghton College, Eastman School of Music and Jamestown Community College - Cattaraugus Campus. Ken holds a B.M. from Nyack College, M.M. from Teachers College, Columbia University, and is close to finishing a D.M.A. in Jazz Studies at Eastman School of Music. Other short term performing engagements that he has played with are: Natalie Cole, Wayne Newton, Chuck Mangione, Bobby Vinton, Jonny Mathes, The Don Menza Big Band, Manhattan Transfer, Byron Stripling, Al Martino, Howard Jones, “One to One,” (recording), Howard McGee (Kool Jazz Festival, NYC), Mel Louis Big Band,(Village Vanguard, NYC), Howard Johnson & Gravity (Jazz Tuba Ensemble in NYC) Slide Hampton and the World of Trombones, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Larry Elgart Orchestra, The Marvelettes, The New Christie Minstrels, Dennis Day, and many other lesser known performing situations. The concert will include the elementary jazz ensemble under the direction of Mrs. Lynn Streeter, the 6th grade jazz ensemble under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Poissant, the 7th and 8th grade jazz ensemble under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Meyer-Davis, and the high school jazz ensembles under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett. The concert is open to the public and is free of charge! _________

The Lake Shore Senior High Bands, under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett and Mrs. Carrie Poissant, will be performing at another National Band Competition the weekend of April 19th, 2013 in the city so great they named it twice; New York City! Students from the Senior High Bands will be on tour April 18th to the 21st. Over the past 13 years, the bands have competed nationally on six occasions and produced 8 professional recordings. With a great deal of hard work, the Senior High Bands have always done very well and represented our school and community with pride. This year the groups are off to compete in the Big Apple Classic at the College of Staten Island. The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will compete against all other bands in attendance at the festival and will be adjudicated by a panel of nationally renowned judges. They will find out their results at an exciting Awards Ceremony following the festival at the famed dinner show, Medieval Times. The last time the bands competed in NYC they all placed first in their respective classes, a student was awarded the top soloist award, and the Wind Ensemble received the Grand Champion award for placing first with the highest score out of every music group in attendance at the festival. The students in the senior high bands will enjoy a very exciting and educational itinerary in addition to the music festival while in NYC. Some of the fantastic highlights and events include; time at the American Museum of Natural History, watching a live sound check at the Jazz at Lincoln Center of the internationally renowned jazz group “Kings of Crescent City”, seeing the city at night from the top of Rockefeller Plaza touring the “Top of the Rock”, a tour of the Radio City Music Hall, a speaking engagement with 9/11 first responder Chief Dan Daly NYFD, the “Phantom of the Opera” musical at the historic Majestic Theater followed by a meet and greet with actors and actresses from the show, a tour called the “Sounds of the City Music Safari” - a 4 hour tour that will take the kids deep into the music and arts history of the city including the Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Opera, Julliard, the Cotton Club, Great White Way, Duke Ellington Memorial, and John Lennon Memorial, and finally, a harbor cruise that will sail under the Brooklyn Bride just past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Along with a tour of this magnitude comes a large financial commitment from the students and community. We would like to thank all of the friends, families, and community members for your support in our fund raising efforts and are always very grateful for your support. To see the Senior High Bands in Concert please attend one of our upcoming Concerts; The District Jazz Concert featuring Jazz Trombonist Ken Crane, Thursday, April 25th, first Spring Concert Monday, May 13th and the second on Monday, June 3rd. All concerts are held in the Lake Shore Senior High School Auditorium at 7pm. Hope to see you there! __________

Community News AMERICAN LEGION POST #928 HONOR GUARD REPORT

On December 19th we did “Military Honors” for Samuel Reino at Lakeside Cemetery. On December 22nd we did Honors for Robert Borowski, a Marine Vet at St. Anthony’s Church. On December 24th Honors were done for Army Vet Martin Semrau at St. John’s Lutheran Church. On December 26th we did Honors for David Daniels, a Marine Vet at Schiavone’s Funeral Home. On December 29th Honors were done for Joe Ricci, an Army Vet at Holy Cross Cemetery. For the year 2012, our Post did “Military Honors” for thirty-one (31) local Vets plus twelve (12) other activities such as parades, appearing at schools, 911 ceremonies, dedications and helping Hamburg Post 527 with their “Military Honors”. The new year 2013 started out very quiet. During the month of January we had nothing, but on February 15th we did Honors for David Wallum, an Air Force Vet at Southtowns Christian Center. On February 21st we did Honors for Michael Krajacic, another Air Force Vet at Lakeside Cemetery. The Guard also purchased knit caps for those cold, windy days in winter. Cemeteries are very cold, and the members of the Guard really appreciated the caps at the last few funerals. Thanks to the donations we receive we are able to equip the men with jackets, caps and other items needed to do these “Military Honors” properly. __________

PROM DRESS DRIVE

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon and Urban Valet Dry Cleaners announce that the 4th annual Prom Dress Drive Shopping Days will be held Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 at Performing Arts Dance Academy, located at 206 Lake St., Hamburg. Girls are invited to come and shop for a free dress from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. A large selection of colors, sizes and styles will be displayed for girls to look through. Dressing rooms will be provided to allow shoppers to try on three (3) dresses at a time. “The shopping days are a lot of fun and help families handle the cost associated with preparing for the prom or other formal event. This year we have a large collection, featuring some truly amazing gowns,” said Legislator Dixon. “All local girls are invited to come and shop through the selection during one of the two shopping days.” Shoppers will be allowed one (1) dress to ensure everyone in attendance is able to choose a gown. All the donated dresses are cleaned by Urban Valet Dry Cleaners prior to the free shopping event. “We are once again overwhelmed by the generosity of our community members and businesses who donated to the drive. We are especially excited about the shopping days at Performing Arts this year. Our new setup there allows us to give a special prom experience, very similar to shopping at a store. The girls are going to have a blast,” said Jackie O'Malley, Director of Business Development. This year the Free Shopping Days will also feature a raffle to win a prize from Vivid Color and Hair Salon, located at 5738 S. Park Ave, Hamburg. Each girl who registers will receive one (1) chance to win. For additional information, please contact Legislator Dixon at 858-8671 or email lynne.dixon@erie.gov.

A favored spring event of patrons of the Angola Public Library has come to a close. This year’s Jelly Bean Contest with its large jar filled with colorful, delicious jelly beans had everyone trying their best mathematical formulas to “guesstimate” the correct number of beans. The winner was Allison Strickler, age five, her guess of 480 was the closest to the total of 487. Allison won the jar of jelly beans to share with friends and family and a soft white stuffed bunny to cuddle with for Easter. __________
