EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB MARCH MEETING

At the March meeting of the Evans Democratic Club, VFW Commander Joe Catalano led Evans Democratic Club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Joe was selected for the honor since the date coincided with St. Joseph's Day. Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino announced to the Club that she will not run for re-election in 2013. "I have given this a lot of thought, and this is the best decision for me and my family. I so appreciate the support from the Club over the years.” DiMartino received a standing ovation from the Club members. DiMartino was elected in 2009. At the same time she was sworn in to office, the job expanded to include the duties of Receiver of Taxes, based on a Democratic-led downsizing referendum which merged the two Town elected posts. DiMartino provided effective leadership for the successful transition of the changes needed to implement the change; she credits her staff for the accomplishments of her office during her tenure. Deputy Town Clerk Lynn Krajacic announced that she will seek the Democratic endorsement for Town Clerk. Krajacic, a native of Evans and graduate of Lake Shore High School, has worked in the Clerk's office for 23 years as both a Deputy Town Clerk and a Deputy Receiver of Taxes. "Serving the people of Evans is very important to me, in both my professional and personal life. I look forward to using my knowledge of the complicated workings of the office, to serve the Town." Krajacic is a member of the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore. Mike Schraft addressed the Club about his race for Erie County Legislature. Schraft is a former Air Force Airman, Peace Corps Volunteer and US State Department Official who has dedicated his life to public service. Among his past honors are a Meritorious Service Award for his State Department work in Afghanistan, a National Defense Service Medal from the Air Force, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. A third-generation member of the VFW Post #5798 in Angola, he is a native of Evans who now resides in Lakeview. He is running for the 9th Legislative District of Erie County, which includes Hamburg, Blasdell, Lackawanna, and a small portion of South Buffalo. Friends of Schraft are holding a fundraiser on the night of Thursday, March 28 at Whitey’s Pub on Pierce Avenue in Hamburg (the former Manchrian House Restaurant.) For more information, see http://michaelschraft. com/ Village of Angola Mayor Howard M. “Hub” Frawley talked about efforts he is undertaking to get a new business into the 13,000 square foot building vacated by the departure of Evans Bank from the village. He spoke about his recent trip to Albany which included a stop at the Governor's Mansion. When it comes to state government, Angola is truly on the map. But that doesn’t stop acting when there’s a disagreement on policy. His village board recently passed a resolution against the State’s efforts to tack a state surcharge onto parking violations. It is common for first offenders to get a plea to parking violations for their first moving violation. Evans Town Board member Paul Cooper discussed that the light is at the end of the tunnel with respect to the tender of the town’s water operations to the Erie County Water Authority. He credited former Town Supervisor Rob Catalino and former Town board member Karen Erickson with their leadership in envisioning the project and getting it off the ground. “Just in unproductive payments for leaks alone, the water operation was costing the Town taxpayers about $750,000 per year. This change will mean significant savings.”

He reminded that that the Town’s 2013 environmental fair at Evans Center Fire Hall will be held on Sat., April 6, from 9 am to 2 pm. There will be a drawing for a 42inch flat-screen TV. The Town board will also be voting on a resolution to oppose the State’s effort to collect surcharges for non-moving violations. Cooper noted that he would vote to oppose this. Cooper congratulated Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino for a job well done in her term. He joined in crediting Deputy Town Clerk’s Lynn Krajacic and Lynn Stossel for their creativity and hard work. “What Jonica, Lynn K., and Lynn S. have done was to bring two Town departments into the 21st century.” Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino discussed the recent events in the Town Clerk’s office. She is pleased that the Water project is coming to fruition. “There will also be savings in terms of clerical manpower,” she described. “This is because of the staff workload associated with accepting and processing water payments.” The Club thanked member Kenny West for getting the picnic shelter reservation for the annual Club picnic on Sunday, August 4. Town Chair Robert “Bob-Cat” Catalino reminded that the April 7 casino bus was changed to the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls, and will depart from the Angola Fire Hall at noon. With a “viva San Guiseppe!”, the Club adjourned. The next Club meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 pm at the VFW. __________

LIONS AND RABBITS AND PLANTS, OH MY

The winners in the Evans Township Lions Club 9th Annual Chocolate Easter Rabbit Raffle were: 36” rabbits: Joseph Pregister, Patricia Geary, Gary Widmer; 24” rabbits: Joe Nota, Debbie Brikeneier, H. Maciejewski; 18” rabbits: Jack Militello, Pat Vogan, Gretchen Damico. The drawing was held at Bella Terra Greenhouse, where owner, Caryl Youngers donates a portion of his Easter plant sales proceeds to the Lions Club. Money raised thru this event, and others, will be spent for community service projects in the Evans Lions Club service area. The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. sponsors one Angola Gazebo concert each season, Sunshine Day at Cradle Beach Camp, the Halloween Children’s Costume Parade in the Village of Angola, and two $500.00 Community Service Scholarships awarded each year to seniors residing in the towns of Evans or Brant, regardless of what high school they attend. The Lions Club also financially supports Christmas in the Village, the Halloween Haunted Fire Hall at Highland Fire Company, the Commemorative Activities and observances at the Veterans Memorial area on Route 5 in the Derby area, and the Hanging Basket program in the Village of Angola, among other community service activities. These are in addition to the Lions Club core mission, which is sight conservation. The Lions Club provides eye exams and glasses as needed to qualified town of Evans and Brant residents. Used eyeglasses are also collected for recycling outside North America, thru Lions Clubs International Inc. The next fundraising activity for your Lions Club will be a “Comedy Night” on June 2, 2013. Watch the Pennysaver for information and details. After that, there will be 2 Lions Club sponsored “Cruise Nights” held at Sam’s Lumber Co., Route 5, Angola. These will be a Hot Dog and Hamburger and soft drink sale on Friday, June 14, 2013 and a Chicken BBQ on Friday, August 16, 2013. Watch the Pennysaver for more information and times for these events. Lions Club fundraising is done locally, by club members who are your friends and neighbors. All money raised from the public participation in these events must be spent back to the community for service projects that benefit the public. There are never any “administrative costs” deducted from these funds. Every dollar of income from the public is spent on community service. Anyone interested in joining the Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. can talk to any club member, or write the Lions Club at P.O. Box 342, Angola, NY 14006. Check us out on line at Evanslions.org. Club members always welcome new members. Participation in community service gives a special pride to those who help others, and exemplifies the Lions Club motto, “We Serve”. _________

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MEALS ON WHEELS

DELIVERING MORE THAN JUST A MEAL: SHARING HEART, HUMOR, AND HOPE. Bob Stoessel began volunteering for Meals on Wheels five years ago when his friend, Site Manager Pat Vogan, encouraged him to try it out. Bob’s mother had been receiving meals for some time, and the offer to volunteer seemed like a great way to give back to the organization that helped his family. Starting out delivering meals on his mother’s route, Bob’s commitment to the Meals on Wheels organization would grow substantially over time. He soon became one of the busiest volunteers in the Angola/Evans area, always delivering meals on Fridays and filling in for other volunteers on a regular basis. “All my clients are really special,” Bob said. “I could do my route in 30 minutes, but I enjoy being with them.” Bob explained how he can spend up to 15 minutes with some clients, just talking or “kidding around” with them. He notes that some of his clients have nobody else to talk with, so his visits are particularly important. This drives him to go above and beyond for each meal recipient, knowing that communication can be just as important as the food itself. Bob’s commitment to clients even extends past the work done with Meals on Wheels for Western New York. This past Thanksgiving, Bob and his daughter picked up meals from Most Precious Blood Church in Angola and delivered them to each of his usual clients. For Christmas, he brought meals and poinsettias from the same church to each client. On both holidays, the good deed brought both smiles and tears from the recipients - as the act of kindness was completely unexpected. The meal recipients drive Bob’s dedication to Meals on Wheels. On a daily basis, he will go above and beyond simple meal delivery to make clients’ lives easier. Whether it be getting the mail from the end of a snow-covered driveway or coming into the house when there is no one to check if the person is all right, Bob’s caring actions keep his clients safe and happy. Bob dedicates his service, as well as this article, to his late mother, Irene Stoessel. He plans on taking on an additional route in the months ahead. __________

BUILDING INSPECTOR ANNOUNCES SUMMER HOURS

Starting Monday, April 15, 2013, the Town of Evans Building Department’s services will be available to customers from 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday. Early (7-8 AM) and late (4-6 PM) meetings will be by appointment only. The majority of construction activity is conducted between the months of April and October each year. The Building Department has already begun to experience an influx of construction related activity. Even though the weather is cold and soggy, contractors are preparing for projects that will commence once the weather cooperates. “We understand that time is money for contractors and that the construction season is relatively short,” said Senior Building Inspector Charles LaBarbera. “We are making every effort to improve our process in an attempt to encourage growth and development in our community,” he said. The Building Department personnel will stagger their schedule to accommodate the new hours. Contractors are encouraged to make an appointment by contacting the Town’s Code Enforcement Department at 716-549-5753. __________

Make the decision to make a difference this Earth Day. On Earth Day and every day, the routine choices we make affect our planet, so here are some simple tips for choosing wisely: • Reduce, reuse and recycle at home, at work and at school. • Shop for used goods, or look for items made from recycled materials. • Buy in bulk or multi-packs to cut down on packaging waste. • Look for Energy Star® and WaterSense® labels on products like appliances and plumbing fixtures. • Cut down on plastic bags by carrying your own reusable shopping bag to the store. • Properly dispose of recyclable items, electronics and potentially hazardous materials. • Always turn off lights and appliances when you leave a room. • Unplug your mobile phone charger when it’s not in use. • Walk, ride your bike or use public transportation whenever possible. • Choose locally and organically produced foods. • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. • Don’t top off your gas tank, as this lets harmful chemicals enter the air. • Go to www.epa.gov/earthday to find local volunteer opportunities and to learn more about steps you can take to protect our planet.

IMMACULATA ACADEMY NAMED ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK

Faculty and staff at Immaculata Academy recently were overjoyed to find out that Immaculata was named one of the Best Places to Work by Buffalo Business First. In order to be considered for the award, Immaculata first had to be nominated and then full time employees had to complete a survey about their workplace. Some of the topics on the survey included teamwork, trust in senior leaders, feeling valued, and job satisfaction. Immaculata alumnae and recent addition to the staff, Kimberlee Andelora Marciniak ’01, nominated the school. “I really treasured my time at Immaculata as a student and was extremely excited to be able to come back and work here. There’s a certain feeling that you get when you walk through the doors of the school and it’s a feeling of positivity, support, and family. I just know that Immaculata is a great place to be and I knew that others felt the same way.” Members of the staff found out in February that Immaculata was a finalist in the competition and received 2nd place in the small business category at an awards luncheon in March. “Immaculata really is a wonderful place to work and one of the main reasons is the students. We are all here for a common interest and the young ladies of Immaculata bring us joy every day,” added principal Jill Monaco. Photo: Immaculata Academy Faculty & Staff _________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOTANICAL GARDENS FIELD TRIP

On Tuesday, February 5th, the entire seventh grade class attended "Rock the Presidents" at Shea's Performing Arts Center. The students were entertained by a musical about the 43 men who led our country since our very first president, George Washington. The show kept the students entertained as well as involved and everyone learned something new about our great leaders. After the show the class had lunch at Ilio DiPaolo's. It was a great opportunity for the teachers to talk to the students about dining etiquette, and the students enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy some fine Italian food. The Middle School PTA made this trip possible. Pictured above are seventh grade students with Eric, one of the stars of the show.

Debbie’s last wish was for all her family and friends to gather and have one last shot of “JACK” on the one year anniversary of her death. To be held on May 15, 2013 at American Legion Post #928 located at 7353 Erie Rd. (Rte. 5), Derby, NY from 6 pm to 9 pm

SCS Grades 7th & 8th had a field trip to The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Our classes spent the day sketching pictures of the beautiful nature for an art class project that they are going to be doing. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is a national historic site, education center and tourist destination full of exotic horticulture treasures. Pictured: Matthew Argy, Bradley Darvill, Elliot DiChristopher, Eli Tremblay, Evan Herman, Claire Koessler, Evan Mangan, Nicholas Ralph, Molly Skalski, Hunter Skoczylas, Lauren Tilly, Alix Novack, Joseph Argy, Alexandra Bevilacqua, Christina Billittier, Dea Chiavetta, Douglas Coleman, Madilyn Cordova, Brett Curtin, Shane Czora, Madison Guthrie, Ellie Hale, Matthew Kauzala, Abby Lopez, Julia Molik, Sarah Palisano, Paul Pinto, James Rath, Christian Richter, Joseph Strozyk, Sam Stuber, Sarah Trimm & Erin Wright. __________

Most professionals would agree that there are basic social skills necessary to move forward in the professional, and sometimes personal, worlds. Skills such as dressing to impress, using proper social/written manners and applying proper tact when dealing with others are some of the more important life skills needed. Currently, freshmen in the Lake Shore Freshman Academy have been learning, reviewing and applying such social skills to every-day situations to create positive and appropriate first impressions. It is not always fair or accurate, but many people make assumptions about others the first time seeing and meeting us. Students are learning that although we should never judge books by their covers, future employers may do just that--make assumptions. Therefore, students are learning how to start first impressions off right by looking, speaking and writing professionally. It is the Academy's philosophy that the best way to learn new skills is to practice doing them. Therefore, freshmen are practicing making great first impressions so that others around them can really get to know them and their characters. In addition to learning how to look and sound, students are also learning how to use tact when dealing with sensitive subjects and when communicating on social media. Texting and facebook can be great tools, but they may also lead students into trouble (in multiple ways) if they share too much information. Although there have been many technological advances in our world in the last 15 years, good manners and tact are eternal qualities--qualities the Lake Shore Freshman Academy hopes to instill in the lives and characters of our rising leaders of tomorrow!
