EVANS FORCE OPENS THEIR SEASON WITH A SPLIT

The 12U Evans Force Girls Softball team opened their 2013 Metro league schedule on May 5th and 6th. The first game was their home opener against a very talented Mel Ott Hurricane team. Despite half the roster playing their first year of travel, the Force stayed tough with the very experienced Hurricane team. The Force fell behind early but managed to close the gap to 6-5 after 4 innings. The Hurricanes shutdown the Force the final 3 innings to take the 10-5 victory. Pitcher, Ruby Thomas recorded 15 strikeouts and also went 1 for 3 at the plate. Elle Hale and Grace Barker were the only other Force players to get hits, but the team did force 12 walks from Hurricane pitching. Tabitha Allen and Emma Kist each scored two runs while Errika Gonzalez was the only player from both teams to reach base safely in each of her at-bats. The second game the Force visited Orchard Park to visit the Starz. It was a different game with the Force exploding to a 21-3 win in only 5 innings. The highlight of the game was Elle Hale’s 3 run homer in the first inning. Tabitha Allen went 3 for 4 and scored 3 times. Caitlin Burbige and Grace Barker both recorded doubles while Camryn Adimey, Elle Hale and Emma Kist also crossed the plate 3 times during the game. Brooke Browning also went 1 for 2 with 2 walks and finished the job at catching. Ruby Thomas and Evie Butlak combined on a 2 hitter with Ruby striking out 5 in two innings and Evie pitching 3 scoreless innings to shut the door on the Starz team. The team will travel to play the D5 Dazzlers next week.

A message from Chris Jacobs, Erie County Clerk This is a perfect time for motorists and motorcyclists to learn about safely sharing the road. The warm weather is approaching, daylight hours are longer -- spring is finally here. Motorcycle riders everywhere are polishing their bikes and getting ready for warm weather and the open road. Motorcycling is a popular choice for economical and convenient travel. They are inexpensive to operate, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 22,000 registered motorcycle riders who use their cycles for commuting, touring and recreational activities. I want to remind all motorists, especially new drivers, to be on the lookout for motorcycles and to share the road with them safely. Car and other vehicle operators must be alert to the presence of motorcycles on the road. Since cyclists often ride to one side of the lane and the cycle can hide in seemingly empty areas, I encourage all motorists to be aware of the car’s blind spots. Carefully check before turning or changing lanes and look two or three times before making a move. Allow more following distance for motorcycles -- two or three car lengths is recommended, more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor. Unfortunately many riders never learn the critical skills needed to ride safely. Before hitting the road this driving season, I encourage all motorcycle riders to visit any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus to get properly licensed and to register their “bikes”. For more information on motorcycle licensing and registration please contact the Erie County Auto Bureau Call Center at 716/858-7450 or visit us at www.erie.gov/clerk and click on the Auto Bureau tab. Additionally riders should also take a moment to review the aspects of motorcycle safety- wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet, ride within your skill limits, ride unimpaired and become a life-long learner by brushing up each year and taking refresher rider courses. Together, the more we raise awareness, the more we keep motorcyclists and all motorists safe! Riders can benefit from a Motorcycle Safety Program rider safety class offered at several local locations for both new riders looking to learn and experienced motorcyclists who want to pick up tips. Class locations and fees can be found at www. nysmsp.org. On behalf of all drivers, I urge everyone to use caution when sharing the road this summer. Let’s ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the season. __________

A wellness workshop series, “Spring Clean Your Body, Mind and Soul” by Gloriously You Health Coaching, was hosted by Parish Of Our Lady, PNCC. The 5-week series was held on Tuesday evenings during the month of April in the basement of the Brant church. Led by Certified Health Coach Gloria Andolina, the Spring workshops focused on seasonal eating, detoxing and nurturing the physical body. In addition to tasting healthy foods each week, such as fruit smoothies, home-grown sprouts and alternative dairy beverages, the participants had the opportunity to stimulate their physical body with yoga, Zumba and breathing technique. Two local holistic health practitioners, chiropractor Dr. Andrea Herold and board certified reflexologist Michelle Warren, also spoke to the group about the benefits of alternative approaches to wellness. For the final session, FarmThisWay, a CSA (community-supported agriculture) in Brant, donated a fresh lettuce pot that was given to one lucky participant to take home and enjoy. There was a very positive response from all who attended, and Gloria Andolina looks forward to providing future wellness and nutrition seminars in the area. ___________

JERRY COLEMAN AWARDED TEACHER OF THE YEAR BY PGA

Jerry Coleman, PGA professional of Lake View, New York has been awarded the Teacher of the Year Award by the Western New York Section of the PGA. Jerry is the Director of Instruction at Brierwood Country Club in Hamburg, New York and the PGA Professional at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Orchard Park, New York. This is one of the highest honors the PGA can bestow on a professional for promoting the game of golf through outstanding service and expertise in teaching.

Students in Southtowns Catholic School's Grade 3 & 4 class cleaned up the area all around the school. Miss Lori McIntyre & Mrs. Jennifer Hills took their students outside and split them into groups. Some picked up the playground, part of the class walked around the parking lots and a few walked the edge of the woods. The kids found boxes, plastic bags, plastic bottles, large pieces of rubber and part of a chair. They learned a valuable lesson about recycling and to always pick up after themselves. LS MIDDLE SCHOOL GROUP HELPS LESS FORTUNATE

The Community Service and Volunteerism (CS&V)/Leo’s Club at the Lake Shore Middle School took some time out of their busy lives to help those less fortunate. Seven students, accompanied by their parents and club advisors visited St.Luke’s Mission of Mercy in Buffalo. The club members and parents went to work organizing clothes that will be given away, packaging food to be distributed, preparing and serving lunch to those who otherwise would have gone hungry. The group was also able to deliver four full boxes of toiletry items, as well as towels, sponges and dishcloths to be used in the kitchen. All parents and students left being reminded that sacrificing just a small amount of time really can make a BIG difference. __________

LAKE SHORE VARSITY TRACK AND FIELD TEAM WELCOMES MANY NEW ATHLETES!

The Lake Shore Varsity Track and Field Team is off to a great start this spring season considering the many changes and additions that our team has seen. Specifically, the team has grown! We currently have about 115 athletes on the team, and 75 of those athletes are new! Therefore, although it is a bulding year, our young talent is a prediction that our program will be strong for the next few years to come. Coaches Kowalski, Connors, Ippolito and Kunkel are very excited by our large numbers, new talent and overall interest in track and field! Returning this year are veteran distance runners T.J. Hornberger (who ran a mile this week in 4:26), Calvin Butlak, Ian Yargeau and John Wasaluski. On the girls' team, distance runners Mary Beth Benzing, Alyssa Kij and Rachel Youngers, Maddy Kromer and Emily George are back and leading the pack. They welcome newcomers Allie Papas, Kaylie Majuk, Emily Becker, Sarah Mitchell and 8th-grader Natalie Cummings who is already running the 1500 in 5:40. We hope to see good times from all of these new distance runners. Coach Connors is very optimistic with the many new long, triple, high jumpers and pole vaulters this year. Freshmen Chris Beckley, Connor Quinn, Shelby Weaver and Nate Pericak join returning vaulters Madison Bates, Mikayla Arcara, Kaylie Barnes, Bonnie O'Neill, Shaun Duffey and Tyler Leavitt to represent Lake Shore as having one of the largest vauling teams in WNY. In the sand pit, Tyler Becker, Nick Winters, Chad Wilkie, Kaylie Barnes, Mikayla Arcara and newcomer (and 7th-grader) Jessica Dunlap are continuously earning team points in the long and triple jumps. In fact, 7 of our jumpers have already qualified for ECICs. High jumpers Nick Winters, Tyler Becker, Kelsey Eggleston, Katelyn Kennedy and Maddy Vail are constantly pushing their personal records to strive for excellence. As for the sprinters, Coach Kowalksi is once again pushing his runners to be their best. Newcomers Alyssa Gardner, Deanna Burton, Madison Mascio and Caterine Wolf join returning veteran and captain Katie Martinowicz. On the boys' end, we welcome Mitchel Bruckman, Connor Quinn, Weslee Thomas who join Danny Kowal, Nick Winters and Jason Dunlap. Hurdlers Jewels Corea, Bonnie O'Neill, Danny Kowal and Kade McGarrity are working hard to three-step and improve their personal records. Then there are the throwers! Coach Kunkel welcomes many new shot and discus throwers to the team this year. On the girls' end, we have newcomers Caitlin Metty, Cheyenne White, Alexis Fhurman, Melissa Toy and Felicia Jimeson. On the boys' end, we have freshmen Darin John, Noah Micalec, Tristan Whitney and Aaron Lin. Returning throwers Cody Green and Justin Crosta help been very helpful teaching our new athletes form and patience. Please join us for our next home meet which is Tuesday, May 14th at 4:30PM. It will be our senior night too. GO EAGLES! __________

SCS GETS SPECIAL VISIT FROM BISHOP MALONE

Southtowns Catholic School got a very special visit from Bishop Richard Malone. He spent more than 2 hours going to every class from Preschool through Grade 8. Bishop Malone would enter the classes and received Rock Star attention from the students. They were so excited that he was coming and some asked to shake his hand. He asked the kids how they liked SCS, what were they learning and what their favorite teams are. (He is a Red Sox fan) The kids could then ask him anything from “how did he like being Bishop” to “where did he grow up”. Grade 3 is learning about New York State and he asked the kids what the state bug was. They said the “lady bug” and they stumped him with the question of “what is the Maine bug” - it’s the honey bee. Pictured here is Grade 2 students Brady Hill, Zack Jones, Trinity Kehoe, Anthony Nance, Teresa Smaldino and Matthew Stadler with Bishop Malone as the explained to him what the Resurrection Eggs were.

Southtowns Catholic School was lucky enough to have Mr. Brad Rybczynski come in and explain what the "Invest in Ed" Rally was going to be about. He is the father to SCS Students Walt, Madeline, Luke and Grant. Mr. Rybczynski told us how the NY Education Investment Tax Credit bill (A.1826 / S.4099) is currently making its way through the state legislature and how important it was for us to attend. He made it clear how a Bill becomes a Law, what the different forms of legislation are for, what a lobbyist does, and how important it is to vote. Mr. Rybczynski began his career in government as a member of the Majority Central Staff for the Erie County Legislature in 1999. During his tenure he served as a clerk for many of the Legislature's standing committees including Community Enrichment, Government Affairs, Energy and Environment and the prestigious post as clerk of the Finance & Management Committee. Additionally, Mr. Rybczynski was responsible for budget analysis relating to Erie Community College, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and the Annual County budget. After nearly 5 years with the Erie County Legislature Rybczynski was tapped to become the first ever Executive Director of the Buffalo Building and Construction Trades Council, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. After years of experience and successes Rybczynski struck out to form his own consulting firm to assist area labor unions, healthcare entities, local governments and nonprofit organizations gain success in the area of government affairs and public policy. During this time he was successful in attracting a number of clients from a broad spectrum of labor organizations, health related industries and nonprofits. His work transformed the processes and steps organizations would take to gain the passage of local and state legislation and win grant awards from various levels of government. Currently, Mr. Rybczynski serves as a Labor Benefits Representative with BlueCross/BlueShield of WNY. The Education Investment Tax Credit bill would increase the amount of charitable donations to public schools and nonprofit scholarship organizations by granting individuals and businesses a tax credit for their donations. Students from grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 participated in the Invest in Ed Rally at The First Niagara Center on April 10th. We were a part of more than 10,000 parents, students, and teachers that rallied in support of the proposed Education Investment Tax Credit bill. The rally was led by a bipartisan collection of Buffalo's state legislature delegation, as well as by Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone, Mayor Byron Brown, Robin Schimminger, George D. Maziarz, Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes, Samuel Radford, and numerous others. The proposed tax credit would encourage individuals and businesses to donate to public schools and non-profit scholarship organizations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience democracy and the legislative process in action. Pictured: Brad Rybczynski with Walt Rybczynski & Madeline Rybczynski.

School News SCS ANNOUNCES 3RD QUARTER HONOR ROLL

IMMACULATA ACADEMY ART STUDENTS HELP FEED WNY

When the opportunity arose for Art Teacher Veronica Benes to have students create art that would also benefit the good of the community, her students immediately went to the drawing board. The Empty Bowls Program held by Buffalo State College encourages local artists, college students, and school children to craft bowls that address the social concern of hunger. The bowls symbolize the empty bowls around the world. All of the bowls made by the students, along with a bowl made by Benes, will be on display and available for purchase at the Empty Bowls event. Along with their bowls, students provided a written statement explaining the design of their bowls and what they represent. The event will be held at the Burchfield Penney Art Center on the Buffalo State Campus on May 19th. Guests will be able to purchase bowls and share in a small meal donated by local WNY restaurants. All proceeds will go to help benefit the Food Bank of WNY and Friends of Night People. “I applaud Buffalo State College art professors and the Burchfield Penney Art Center for giving my students the opportunity to be a part of the Empty Bowls Program. The girls created some extraordinary original bowls which identify a concern related to poverty and hunger,” Benes expressed. About Immaculata Academy: Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit, our goal for each student is that she maximizes her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society. This a fantastic book because it is a collection of mysteries that the reader tries to solve. In the picture is Christian with his father.

SCS SUPER VOLUNTEER

GRADE 4 CLASS HAS A MYSTERY READER!

Serving individuals with disabilities of WNY for over 35 years.

Southtowns Catholic School would like to honor our “super volunteer” Franz Joseph Stadler. In the rain, snow, sleet & hail, Mr. Stadler welcomes the children into the building each day with a friendly smile and “Good morning” as they get off the bus. Mr. Stadler retired from SCS after 15 years to take care of his wife, Jane. His favorite part of SCS was interacting with the kids. After the Sandy Hook tragedy, he felt the need to come back and add that extra sense of security we all appreciate. Mr. Stadler makes sure each and every student is safely in the school and ready to start another great day at Southtowns Catholic. He is the proud grandfather of SCS students Mathew & Michael Stadler.
