In Memory of Ray

You aren’t ever coming back to see where you left off and where the world took us beyond the trees that insulate your from the cold. If the tides reversed their course to bring you back to us and the earth opened up to set you free sentient of life’s fragility You could stand with us if only for a moment and we could feel the healing in your smile and you could feel the reflection of our love. And for that second we’d be whole again frozen still with the other missing angel. You aren’t ever coming back. But part of you never left. The part that comes along with us everywhere we go. Until we meet again. The Family of Ray Ashton ask that you DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE.

EVANS-BRANT CHAMBER HOLDS BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce, at it’s May 8th monthly Board of Directors Meeting, held a business spotlight of Affordable Chiropractic / Derek Bell. The round table discussion included an excellent presentation by Derek Bell. The practice of chiropractic is relatively young in the medical field, but it certainly has taken its place in the solutions people seek for their health. The presentation itself directly dealt with the fact that medical care is not a one size fits all practice and should not be treated as such. Derek Bell believes the approach to well-being includes not only making you feel better when you are sick or hurting, but in maintaining and creating a healthy lifestyle. His points were interesting and well presented. __________

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES

General Order No. 3: Headquarters James Ayer Post 202 G.A.R., Angola, May 13, 1895. In accordance with the beautiful custom which has become a law to the Grand Army of the Republic Thursday, May 30, ‘Memorial Day’ will be observed by this Post. Since we last observed Memorial Day, two of our comrades have been transferred to the Great Grand Army above—Comrades George W. Clark and John Jackson. The ranks of the Grand Army are rapidly thinning and ere another Memorial Day we too may be mustered into the greater Grand Army, above, and some of our comrades wilt scatter flowers upon our graves. Let us meet on this day in a spirit of fraternity towards all our comrades with charity towards all mankind and loyalty to this Great and Glorious Republic, and let us scatter the choicest of earth's flowers upon the graves of our dead comrades. Let every comrade fall into line and invite every Veteran of his acquaintance, and, ‘the stranger within our lines,’ to fall in with us and fittingly observe this holiday, not with feasting and sport, but with the reverent spirit due our dead heroes. By Order C. C. Robison, Commander. Attest: E. Barry, Adjt.” Printed in the Hamburg, NY Erie County Independent, May 17, 1895 Three years ago this month, Ed and I were walking through Holy Cross Cemetery in Angola visiting the graves of his grandparents and uncles. In the twelve years I’ve known Ed his memories of his father, grandfather, and uncles’ service are always present. That day, Ed told me about November 11, 1918. A Marine stationed in France, his grandfather had just finished writing a letter home to his girlfriend Mary who became Ed’s grandmother. A lookout peered out of the trench and saw four German soldiers carrying white flags. Told to stay ready by the officers, the Americans met their counterparts and in surrender, a German officer handed his pistol to an American officer who handed in back. German soldiers stood up, came out of their trenches and began piling their rifles. It was Armistice Day. World War I had ended. Ed’s grandfather’s generation was set apart by their experiences of that brutal war. So too were my father and Ed’s uncles by World War II, and Ed’s dad, an Air Force Colonel, by his service during the Bay of Pigs and Vietnam. In Holy Cross, the families of soldiers from the Civil War and the Spanish American War through Vietnam and the Persian Gulf walk to graves and for the time there, live again with those family members that they have loved and lost to this life. And as it is with time, we noticed the graves of soldiers unmarked with flags or flowers. Upon asking, we found that volunteers walk the rows marking the headstones of known soldiers and we decided to do what we could to remember and honor them. We developed a database of veterans and have identified over 320 soldiers in our small cemetery, seven given Purple Hearts for being wounded in battle. We walk the cemetery three times a year—Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Veterans’ Day with flags for each soldier.

Ed’s Grandfather worked as an engineer at Sylvania. My father worked the factory lines at John Deere. Two Civil War soldiers, Captain James Ayer, namesake of the local G.A.R. post and Edward Barry, Adjunct, were farmers in Angola. Commander Robinson was a local painter and wallpaper hanger. I have written about some of the men who were near or known to us but whether they owned a lumber yard, worked in the local steel mills, or became surgeons, all the veterans in Holy Cross are known because of a common grand history. So, when you honor your loved ones this Memorial Day, plant a flag or tend a grave forgotten. They are men and women who stood side by side for us and our children and because of their deeds they shall be remembered with love and grief and “with the reverent spirit due our dead heroes.” Diane Koeppel __________

A benefit was held on Saturday, May 18th at the Evans Center Firehall for Liam Hilliker. Hundreds of family and friends of Liam united to raise money to help defray medical and recreational costs as he grows older. Liam was born with a congenital birth defect called Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS). This syndrome affected Liam’s left arm and he was born without a hand. The incidence of ABS is 1 in 1200 to 1 in 15,000 live births. It is a condition that occurs in-utero and is not caused by the mothers care during pregnancy or by any environmental factors. It is simply a tragedy that can happen to any family. We want to make sure that Liam has the same opportunities as every kid in the neighborhood but recreational activities and adaptive equipment can be costly. With this fundraiser we will try to ease that burden for his parents, Brad and Kelly. There were hundreds of items raffled off and a couple 50/50 splits. - The 14U Evans Force girls softball team saw their first action of the season in the May 17-19th tournament in Orchard Park. The Force was shorthanded due to some player’s school obligations. The team needed to sign on some replacement players and some call ups from the Evans 12U team. The first game of the tournament was against the Cheektowaga Crabapples. This was a close game throughout with the Force entering the last inning with a 6-5 lead. The Crabapples scored 3 in the top half and the Force needed 2 to tie. Abby Widger lead off and reached safety at first and later scored on Jordan Glinski’s second triple of the game to close the gap to 8-7. Jordan next scored on a passed ball. The last 2 players struckout and the score was tied 8-8. Because of time limits the game was scored an 8-8 tie. Ruby Thomas, 12U call up, struckout 7 and replacement Jillian Boltz and Betsy Butlak each got 2 hits. Carol Ferris and 12U call ups Ellie Hale and Brooke Browning each added a hit. Game two saw the Force face the strongest team in the tournament, Lancaster Heat. It did not go well for the Force as they were dropped in 3 innings by a score of 150. Madison Scheuneman was the only Force to reach base with a walk. Evie Butlak, 12U call up, shows guts and determination not backing down as she was summoned to pitch against the top 14U team. The last Saturday game, the Force put together a dominating performance as they easily handle the Canadian team Oakville Angels. The Force needed only one run in the bottom of the third to get a mercy win of 12-0. The hitting star was replacement Amanda Putnam who hit a grand-slam in the second that at the time gave the Force a 9-0 lead. Ruby Thomas and Carol Ferris each got 2 hits while Abby Widger, Jordan Glinski and Madison Scheuneman also got hits. Abby, Carol, Jordan and Amanda, all each got 2 runs. Ruby Thomas and Betsy Butlak combined on a perfect game with the duo getting all 9 batters they faced out. The win advanced the Force to a 4th place seed in the Gold division playoff. The winner of the Gold Division would be the overall champ. Unfortunately, the Force was paired up with the Lancaster Heat again. This time, the Force started strong opening with a run in the first inning and almost more when Ellie Hale (12U call up) hit a shot up the middle with the bases loaded. However, a great play by the Heat shortstop prevented more runs. The Heat scored 2 in the bottom half and only lead 2-1 after 1. In the top half of the 2nd inning, Madison Scheuneman and Abby Widger each got hits and with only one out it looked like the Force would challenge again. Carol Ferris hit a bullet down the third base line which was caught by the Heat’s third baseman to kill their rally. The Heat then put the game away with a 9 run second inning on root to a 13-1 win to eliminate the Force from the playoffs. Jordan Glinski had a triple and Amanda Putnam added a hit for the Force. The 14U Force will next be in action as they host the Evans Memorial Day Weekend Tournament. __________

BENZING RECEIVES AWARD

Kyle G. Benzing, of Angola received an award at St. Lawrence's Moving-Up Day ceremonies, held April 27 in Canton, New York. Benzing, a member of the Class of 2014, was presented with the David Richardson Scholarship. Benzing graduated from Lake Shore Central High School. The The David Richardson Scholarship was established in 2005 to recognize Professor Richardson's dedication to teaching and scholarship. Awarded on a meritorious basis to a rising senior economics major, based on academic accomplishment. Moving-Up Day celebrates student achievements in academics and co-curricular activities. It is a campus tradition dating from 1869, when it began as "Tree Holiday," to add trees to the campus landscape. In more recent times, the day evolved into an occasion for the recognition of student achievement and a symbolic "moving-up" of students to chapel pews vacated by students a year ahead of them. __________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL TOURS FIRST NIAGARA CENTER

Mrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 4 class got the opportunity to take a tour of the First Niagara Center. They took the elevator to the very top where Rick Jeanneret makes his famous calls and stopped at each level all the way down to the "Ice". The kids sat in the Broadcast Booth, the party box and the 100 level seats. On the ground floor, they met a Zamboni driver, toured the away team locker room, Bandit's Locker room and where the ref's get ready. No Field trip would be complete without sitting on the player bench and tossing balls around on the "ice". SAFETY EFFORTS EARN LAKE SHORE CSD SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARD

Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District is one of 121 school districts and Board of Cooperative Educational Services in the state to receive the “2013 School Safety Excellence Award” from the Utica National Insurance Group. Utica National officials presented the award at its 33rd annual school safety seminar, one of seven held in New York State. Utica insures more than 300 school districts in upstate New York for property and liability insurance and is one of the leading companies in the field. Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District received a certificate from the insurance company to commemorate the district’s safety efforts and a $500 award for use in furthering their safety efforts. “Safety and health concerns are a priority in our school districts. Whether we are parents seeing our child off on the school bus, teachers charged with the responsibility of educating, or staff who maintain the facility, there is a common thread of attention to safety issues,” Regional Manager - Risk Management Department, Mark Aquino said. “It is with great pleasure that we recognize those schools that not only take safety to heart, but go above and beyond to provide a safe, healthy, and focused culture for learning.” Utica National’s School Safety Excellence Award Program helps participating schools enhance overall safety through measurable assessment. The program evaluates schools with their own transportation on 19 categories, schools with contract transportation on 18 categories and BOCES on 14 categories, from bullying prevention program to playground safety, with specific, quantifiable data-gathering surveys. “This recognition belongs to all of our employees who work hard every day to ensure the safety and security of our buildings, especially our District Safety Committee. This award will be invested in District safety initiatives to continue our efforts in providing safe and secure educational environments,” Superintendent of Schools James Przepasniak said. __________

Manufactured Housing

The Garrasi Family wishes to thank you, who have brought such “Love” and “Support” to our family while we’ve been trying to work through our terrible loss. It was only the outpouring of love from so many that our deep sadness has been eased. We are so impressed with our community and the selfless expressions of generosity, warmth and kindness that you shared with us. Whether it was a prayer, a hug, a card,, food, a memory shared, or a kind word .. they have all meant so much to us! We thank God every day for all of you and cannot possibly express in words all the sincere heartfelt emotions we would love to share. If we could give you each a hug and touch your hearts even half as much as you’ve touched ours it would only be a start. We will continue to keep you in our prayers, that we may all find God’s guidance and love each day. Remember, a LOVED ONE is never TRULY LOST, simply missed for the time being. All our Love and Thanks, Fred, Renee, Ashley & Kelsey

Attorneys for Plaintiff 145 Huguenot St., Ste. 210 New Rochelle, NY 10801 p. 914-636-8900 f. 914-636-8901 HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE NEW YORK STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT WE SEND YOU THIS NOTICE ABOUT THE FORECLOSURE PROCESS. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT IN THIS FORECLOSURE ACTION, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOME. PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-226-5697 or visit the Department's website at www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to "save" your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.

On May 2 and 3, the Lake Shore Middle School Seventh and Eighth Grade Bands and Orchestras participated in the New York State Music Evaluation Festival in Orchard Park. Two adjudicators, one from Rochester and one from Long Island, came to to evaluate the students on selections they have been working on. The students did not compete against other schools, but are evaluated based on a rubric of musical standards implemented by NYSSMA. After careful deliberation and consideration, the adjudicators rated the students on their performances. Based on how they perform the students can receive a rating of participant, bronze, silver or gold. Lake Shore Middle School put their best foot forward on and off the stage and it was apparent throughout the whole experience. We are very pleased and proud to announce that the Seventh Grade Band and Orchestra each received a rating of Silver and the Eighth grade Band and Orchestra each received a Gold rating at the festival. The students played tremendously well and we are very proud of their accomplishments. The Seventh and Eighth grade bands are under the director of Ms. Jennifer Meyer-Davis and the Seventh and Eighth grade orchestras are under the direction of Ms. Alicia Louttit. __________

Evans Force 12u girls softball team improved to 3-1 in Metro League play with two straight wins last week. On May 15th, the Force had little trouble with the D5 Dazzlers as they won on the road with a 21-6 score. The Force jumped out to a 17-0 third inning lead until the Dazzlers finally scored. Every player had at least one hit and one RBI, with the team recording 24 hits total. The hitting stars included Camryn Adimey going 3 for 4 with a 3-run homer ,4 runs and 5 RBI, Evie Butlak 4 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, Ruby Thomas 4 for 5 with 4 runs and 3 RBI, Emma Kist with 2 triples and Maddy Tempski going 3 for 4 with 3 runs. Grace Barker and Tabitha Allen each had 2 hits while Caitlin Burbige, Brooke Browning and Errika Gonzalez each added one hit a piece. On the pitching side, Ruby Thomas pitched 2 innings of hitless ball striking out 4, Evie Butlak pitched 2 striking out 4 while Camryn Adimey finished off the game with the last 3 players striking out looking. On Saturday, the Force traveled to Eden for a “game under the lights” to face the Lady Raiders. The players from the Force were a tired bunch with all their players playing at least 2 games earlier in the day with tournament or house ball. The Force jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, the Raiders closed the gap to 5-4 in the 5th but the Force’s 9 run 6th inning broke it open to lead the Force to their third straight victory 15-7. The turning point of the game was a 3 run homer by Ruby Thomas in the 6th inning. Ruby went 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 5 RBI and pitching the first 2 innings striking out 4 more batters to raise her strikeout total to 30 in only 13 innings this season. Camryn Adimey, Maddy Tempski and Evie Butlak each got 2 hits while Evie pitched the final 5 innings with 5 strikeouts to preserve the victory. The Force next will see action as they host the Evans Memorial Day Weekend tournament. __________

ANNUAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON FOR LAKE ERIE REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM OF NEW YORK

Lynn McLeod, pictured in the Gift Shop at Lake Shore Health Care Center, represents one of the many volunteers throughout the Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York who were recently honored during annual recognition luncheon activities. (Photo submitted by LERHSNY) Over 70 men and women who comprise the volunteer corps at Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York (LERHSNY) were honored during an annual luncheon as part of National Hospital Week activities. Linda Summers, FACHE, MBA, OT, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Lake Shore Health Care Center, said their commitment to care and customer service represented some 6,300 volunteer hours of service over the past year. The luncheon was held at The Colony Restaurant in Irving, with the invocation given by Dorothea Tooley. This year’s theme was “Volunteers: The Heart of Our Community.” Volunteers provide services at LERHSNY locations including Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving and Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk in a range of areas such as Patient Registration, Patient Transport, Inpatient Care Units and Surgical Waiting Rooms. At Brooks Memorial Hospital, volunteers also assist in the Dialysis Unit and, on the Irving campus, volunteers provide services in the Gift Shop and the Long Term Care facility. __________

LAKE SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL CITIZEN OF THE MONTH

The Brant-Evans Citizens for Responsible Choices and Lake Shore Central Middle School would like to announce the MarchCitizens of the Month. These students are being honored for being good citizens in their school and community.

ELIZABETH ROSE Elizabeth Anne Rose is the daughter of Angelo and Jackie Botticelli if Derby. She is a sixth-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for March. In school, her favorite class is English. She is a member of Bible Club and plays oboe in band. Outside of school Botticelli does gymnastics, takes Tae Kwon Do, enjoys swimming and is a member of the Girls on the Run. Her future goal is to attend college and become a veterinarian. Botticelli said her favorite thing in the world is her cousin who lives in Massachusetts and is more like a sister to her. The character trait she believes is the most important for continuing success is respect. “Respect is important because you can’t get any where if you are not respectful,” Botticelli said. __________

OLIVIA PERICAK Olivia Pericak is the daughter of Steve and Rachel Pericak of Derby. She is a seventh-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for March. In school, her favorite subject is math. She plays the percussion in the band and enjoys swimming and playing soccer. She will also be trying out for track. Outside of school Pericak likes to play soccer and spending time with her family and friends. Pericak is a member of Southtowns Catholic Church and helps with the food donations. Her future goal is to go to college and become a dentist, like her father. Pericak said that her favorite thing in the world is her family. The character trait she believes is most important for continuing success is being trustworthy. “To get anywhere in life you have to make sure people trust you,” Pericak said. __________

ALICIA MAJKUT Alicia Majkut is the daughter of Patrick and Laura Majkut of Derby. She is an eighth-grader and is a CRC Citizen of the Month for March. In school, Majkut’s favorite class is English, she is the secretary of the Eighth Grade Class and she plays alto sax for the band. She also plays modified soccer, basketball and baseball. Outside of school she likes to spend time hanging out with her friends and participate in various sport activities. She also likes to swim and reading. Community involvement includes being a volunteer for the past three/four years with the Challenger Baseball Program for disabled children in Hamburg. She is a member of St. Vincent’s and helps with food drives at the church. She is also a former member of the Community Service and Volunteerism Program at school. Majkut’s future goal is to go college and be part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Program. Her favorite thing in the world is her family. The character trait she believes is most important for continuing success is leadership. “You need to do your own thing,” Majkut said. “Follow what you believe in, not what others want for you. And you should be there to help others to make the right decisions.” ____________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL VISITS CANALSIDE

Mrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 4 class took a field trip to Canalside in Buffalo. They went to hear playwright, author and illustrator Gretchen Murray Sepik present “Erie Canal Sal,” a theatrical characterization of Sal McMurray, an Irish cook working on a packet boat traveling the Erie Canal in the year 1840. The program combined Irish folk tales and facts about the canal that are true in a very broad sense. Sepik even brought the class into the play by giving them names and parts as if they were also on the boat. Before the performance, the kids had ice cream along the Big Ships and after had lunch & played in the huge sand box along the Buffalo River. TOWN OF BRANT RESIDENTS

This November, I ask you to show your continued support for Town Supervisor Leonard Pero in this year’s election. As Town Supervisor, Mr. Pero has led the charge in numerous town projects over the last eight years. In 2011, Supervisor Pero brokered a deal with the Lake Shore School District to purchase the Brant School, which was slated to be closed , and converted it into our new Town Hall. This deal alone saved the taxpayers over 1 million dollars. He assisted in negotiations to allow a new concession stand and garage to be built on town property and donated back to the town at no cost to the town taxpayer. The park has also seen the construction of a nature trail, walking path, field lights, and new parking lots. In 2012, Supervisor Pero, with the help of our town grant writer, secured $132,000 in grants which paid for various town improvement projects. Let’s continue to move the town forward in the years to come! Please support Brant Town Supervisor Leonard Pero in this year’s election. Thank You, Chad R. Kaczmarek - Town of Brant Councilman

Kicking off the summer season will be our Memorial Day service held at our Memorial Park on May 27th at 9 am. Then on June 21, 22 & 23rd we will host the 10th annual Summer Fest & Strawberry Jam. This year’s festival will feature a midway with rides & games sponsored by Goya Foods, J. Mills Distributing & Pero Family Farms. There will be entertainment every night with plenty of food and refreshments for all to enjoy. On Saturday we will be sponsoring a 5k run/walk to benefit the Madison McCarthy foundation. Life Guards are needed for the town pool which will open June 29th and recreation will begin on July 1st and end on August 9th. Also on July 1st Concerts in the park will begin and play every Monday night until August 12th. The Brant Firemen’s Softball schedule consists of 3 home games on June 4, July 16 & July 23rd with the league championship held on August 17th. The inactive records room is 90% complete and our block grant to create access to handicap restrooms at our town park is in the beginning stages. Local 17 operating school has once again volunteered and has begun the work of adding a new parking lot and extending our walking path for your enjoyment. The dog warden has notified me of a donation from Marybeth Cantwell of Lovely Things by Capable Hands of a beautiful Homespun Lion brand yarn Afghan to be raffled off at the summer feast for the benefit of our animal shelter. The town would like to send prayers and best wishes to Justice Linda Crouse & Town Custodian Goldie Disaverio for a speedy recovery and thank Justice Peter Gugino and his staff for all of their time spent making the courts run smoothly in Linda’s absence. Also a big thank you to Marge Bates, & Alan Nolan for keeping our Town Hall clean from dust bunnies while we wait for the return of our beloved Goldie. Police Chief Don Hepkins informed me of 2 intern students from Erie 2 Boces & SUNY Fredonia criminal justice getting the training needed to further their education. It is also my pleasure to announce that Officer Nick Nesci received recognition of his Erie County regional enforcement of the DWI law award for 2012. We are looking into a town wide tire drop off site to correspond with our E-Waste (electronic) drop off held every 4th Saturday behind the Highway garage from 9 am to Noon. Enjoy the Summer, Supervisor Leonard K. Pero and the Town Board
