J.T. WAUGH LEARNS ABOUT SOLAR SYSTEM

LS HIGH SCHOOL BANDS CONTINUED EXCELLENCE

On Wednesday, May 16th the Lake Shore High School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Poissant, and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett, attended the New York State School Music Association large ensemble rating festival. This festival is held throughout the state at different locations to provide groups an opportunity to perform for a state adjudicator to receive a formal evaluation. Each group is required to perform three selections, two of which must be from the state manual on levels of difficulty ranging from Level 1 (easiest) to Level V1 (most difficult).

Following the performance, groups receive a rating of Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Gold with Distinction based upon their performance quality and preparation. A Bronze rating signifies a good performance, Silver an excellent performance, Gold an outstanding performance, and Gold with Distinction a flawless performance. This year, the Lake Shore Symphonic Band received a Level IV Gold rating and the Wind Ensemble a Level VI Gold with Distinction! Congratulations Band students for once again representing Lake Shore at a high level and continuing the High School Bands’ tradition of excellence.

The Eighth grade class of Southtowns Catholic School recently went on their final class trip to Sky High Adventure Park in Holiday Valley, New York. Sky High Adventure Park is a series of platforms and bridges in which the students were able to zip line and do obstacle courses. After a few hours at the park, the class had dinner at a privately owned Chalet in the heart of Ellicottville, where they enjoyed

Third graders at the J.T. Waugh School just finished learning about the Solar System. Students in Mr. Renzo, Mrs. Takacs, and Mrs. Amoia’s classes enjoyed learning about the order of the planets as well as interesting facts about each planet. Students then had the opportunity to display what

they had learned through a project. The students shared the information they learned about planets in a research report about one specific planet or a model of all the planets. Pictured are some of the students and their projects. Left to right: Jenna Samantha, Sierra, Mahlik, and Dominic.

WAUGH CLEANS UP FOR EARTH DAY

Friday, April 20, turned out to be a beautiful evening for the families who attended the “Waugh Community Clean Up.” Children and adults grabbed their gloves and garbage bags and hit the streets around their John T. Waugh Elementary School in an effort to beautify their school and local community. The activity was part of the Waugh’s monthly Community Project effort. Past activities include - a book collection for the local daycare centers, “100 Pairs of Socks” for the City Mission

(which we exceed), Pink Ribbon funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Poinsettia Sale for Adopta Child, Red Ribbon Drug Free Activities, and others. The month of May will feature the collection of pop or beverage tabs for the “Ronald McDonald House”, which was the idea of one of the students. Our community efforts help children. Waugh is a great place to learn and grow. Pictured are the families after their hard work was done but notice those big smiles!

West Elementary students and staff got haircuts for a cause on Monday, May 21, as the school became the 3rd in West Seneca to go “Bald for Bucks” this year. West Seneca Elementary raised $15,800 in its first time participating in the fundraiser for Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Approximately 40 students and staff members decided to “go bald”. Top fundraiser was sixth grade student Sabrina Passucci who collected $2,045. Jacob Wood sixth grade student raised the second highest amount $1,445. Following closely behind were Clerk typist, Maura

‘CLICK IT OR TICKET’

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs would like to remind all motorists that the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement officials will be enforcing state seat belt laws as the “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement mobilization kicks off May 21 - June 3. “The ‘Click It or Ticket ’ seatbelt enforcement plays a vital role in an effort to keep adults and children safe on the roads and highways,” says Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs. “Don’t put your own life at risk, or the life of your family or friends. I encourage all motorists to buckle up.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 61 percent of the 10,647 passenger vehicle occupants nationwide who were killed in nighttime crashes were not wearing their seat belt. In 2010, seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.

BALD FOR BUCKS

Lillis Blonski with $1,171. And third grade student Michael Witt with $1,161. First grade student Joey Ventura raised $530. Teacher aide, Kathie Barreca, who organized the event, also went bald. Those who didn’t wish to have their heads shaved or donate Locks for Love were able to get manicures for a minimum $5 donation. Stylists from Kim’s Sheer Expressions in Angola were Kim Kelly and Jess Plyman who donated their time for the event. Three stylists from Diva Studio in Buffalo also donated their time; Lynn

Mariana, Lisa Pease and Maria Miosi. Earlier this year, west Seneca East High School raised $36,000 and Northwood Elementary collected $11,000 through Bald for Bucks. west Seneca West High School will also go Bald for Bucks onJune 8th. Kathie Barreca dedicated the event to he husband Larry who lost his battle form a brain tumor on February 28, 1990. She also dedicated it inhonor of Becky Holmes, a Kindergarten teacher at West Seneca West Elementary who was diagnosed with cancer last year.

“Consistent research has shown that fewer people are buckling up at night, when the risk of being in a fatal crash is greatest,’ said County Clerk Jacobs. “That’s why police agencies from across Erie County will be out in force at night , as well as during the day, to make sure that drivers and passengers take seat belts and seat belt laws seriously.”

HEALTHY HABITS CLUB IS COOKING

Students in Mrs. Shannon Miller ’s fifth grade class at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg had the opportunity to learn about the Presidents of the United States of America and their wives. Pictured above is Angeleah Lograsso, who gave a presentation about Franklin D. Roosevelt’s wife, Eleanor. ________

Things have really been “cooking” at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore. Each Friday, Club members are able to participate in the Healty Habits Cooking Club. This program, which focuses on how to make healthy choices while cooking, was made possible due to the generous support of Pasquale’s Restaurant in Derby. The Healthy Habits Cooking Club teaches members the proper ways to prepare and cook foods. As an added bonus, members are able to sample their delicious culinary creations. Recently, the Cooking Club took some inspiration from the Italian cuisine on the Pasquale’s Menu and made a healthy and delicious spin on the traditional spaghetti and meatballs. Instead of using ground beef for the meatballs the Club’s chefs used ground turkey. Whole grain spaghetti was substituted for regular spaghetti which lowered the amount of calories in the dish and boosted the amount of fiber, vitamins, and minerals per serving. Finally, rather than using jarred sauce which can be high in its sugar content, the chefs made their own homemade sauce which only contained one teaspoon of sugar for the entire batch. Upon the completion of the meal, all the members that participated in the preparation were able to sample their homemade dinner. It was a two thumbs up hit all while being healthy. “This program is designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning in every part of the Club experience. Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition and it also promotes self-sufficiency for Club kids that will one day be on their own,” said Lake Shore Boys and Girls Club Unit Director Andrea Sunday. For more healthy and delicious recipes check out our Healthy Habits Cooking Club every Friday! Also, be sure to visit Pasquale’s in Derby for lunch or dinner and while you’re there say “thank you” to Gene and his staff for supporting the Club! __________

STUDENTS ATTEND ENSEMBLE RATING FESTIVAL On Wednesday, May 16, the 7th Grade Lake Shore Middle School Orchestra, under the direction of Alicia Louttit and the 7th Grade Band, under the direction of Jennifer Meyer-Davis, attended the New York State School of Music Association large emsemble rating festival. This prestigious festival is held all over New York State at different sites. Last year both groups performed at Hamburg High School, this year both groups performed at Eden High School. Each group that participated prepared three selections. Each selection is then graded on various categories

such as: Correct rhythms, pitches, articulations, bowings, breathing and phrasings. They are also graded on posture and musicality. Each group at the Middle School did an outstanding job. The 7th Grade Band received a silver rating on a Level II performance. The 7th Grade Orchestra received a Gold rating at this festival on a Level I performance. This is the first Gold that Lake Shore has received at this festival within the Orchestra Program. Congratulations to all the students involved. You did an amazing job!

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Currently in Lake Shore 2015: Freshman Seminar, Students are learning how to think outside the box as means to enhance their higher-level thinking skills in their speech and writing. Specifcally, students are learning how to analyze the semantics of problems (close-reading), riddles and word problems and provide creative, outside the box, solutions. In addition, students are using their five senses to practice creating Imagery which enhance their cre-

ative and critical writing skills; they are learning how to “show” and simply “tell” using metaphors and similies. Using this type of higher-level thinking and description will not only enable students to communicate more efficiently and figuratively, but it will also help them think critically in their core classes an in every-day life problems. Pictured: Freshman Shawna Quinn, Grace Alvira, Chris Cunningham and Maddy Kromer discribing their sensory imagery of various tastes.

CAREER POSTER COMPETITION SUMMARY

As part of Career Month (April), The Middle School invited all students to participate in a Career Poster Competition. The students were asked to create posters reflecting a career theme. Students could enter the competition individually or as a group effort. Some of the themes included: Education, Engineering, Culinary Arts, Law Enforcement, Veterinary Science and Sports related careers. Students were encouraged to use creativity, career specific information (salary, educational requirements, career forecast, and colleges offering necessary course work), and originality in designing their specific Career Posters.

All posters are displayed in the cafeteria during April, May and June. Participants received a personalized certificate of participation, as well as, a candy bar. The posters were judged and the following students recognized accordingly for their efforts with prizes: Individual Category- 1st Place, Adam Brzozowiec; 2nd Place, Catherine McLaughlin. Group Category- 1st Place, Sabryna Stevens, Ivy Santana and Jalyn Jimerson; 2nd PlaceShayla Scanlon and Tealynn Twoguns. 3rd Place, Crystal Fort, Kari Maund, Garrett Richards and Lee Zygula.

EVANS GARDEN CLUB NEWS

The Green PathWater Saving Tips For Your Lawn And Garden We’ve all noticed our water bills going up a lot during the summer months. Fortunately, being waterwise doesn’t have to be difficult, time-consuming or terribly expensive. Here are things you can do to conserve water right in your own backyard. • Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation. • Recycle grass clippings back into your lawn by using a mulching mower. • Put a layer of 3 to 5” of mulch around plants to retain moisture. • If you use a hose and portable sprinkler, purchase a hose end timer to regulate use. • When washing car, turn hose off between rinses. • Consider harvesting rainwater with your own rainwater collection system - they are compact and easy to assemble and can help trim your summer water bill. • Or consider installing drip irrigation systems around your shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens. Delivering water right to the plant roots by drip irrigation uses up to 70% less water than conventional sprinklers. A rain sensor can turn off the watering program when it rains. Please join us on a Green Path to leave a positive impact on ourselves, our town and our world. Small changes can make a big difference. ________
