Community News MICHALSKI ANNOUNCES RE-ELECTION BID

TREES PLANTED AT PIONEER CEMETERY

On a cold, wet Saturday morning, 18 volunteers gathered to plant trees at the Pioneer Cemetery on North Main Street. According to Joe Pisarski, coordinator of the effort, 20 flowering crab apple trees were planted to replace the old decaying trees that were removed last year. In addition to planting the trees, the volunteers also removed debris and brush from the graveyard to keep it in respectable condition. Mr. Pisarski mentioned that the work was made much easier by Mike Connors, who brought his small tractor/ backhoe to dig the holes for placement. The trees, obtained by Caryl Youngers, were purchased with monies donated by friends of the cemetery. Following the plantings at the cemetery, the group went to the Evans Historial Society Museum to plant 4 sugar maples replacing the old trees that were recently removed. Pictured above are many of the voluteers including: Phil Boyer, Bridgette Boyer, Dick Dillon, Rich Vail Sr., Pat Vogan, Eric Vogan, Rick Vogan, Tim Clark, Caryl Youngers, Dennis Kingan, Jim Ginnitti, Dick Fox, John Latimore, Norm Smith, Edie Anderson, Jim Dinkuhn, Mike Connors, and Joe Pisarski. __________

Town of Evans Highway Superintendent Ed Michalski announced that he will seek re-election for a final term as Evans Roads Manager. He stated that his decision to seek re-election is based on his continued enthusiasm for the position and especially for the challenge of the newly created Department of Public Works. “In order to be successful,” Michalski said, “the new department requires an administrator familiar with the daily operations.” He added that he feels his budgeting experience and proven record of never overspending highway appropriations will be an asset in making the new DPW cost effective to the town. __________

LAKE SHORE SENIOR HIGH BANDS RETURN FROM NATIONAL COMPETITION IN NEW YORK CITY

The Lake Shore Senior High Bands, under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett and Mrs. Carrie Poissant, had an extremely successful competition at the Performing Arts Consultant’s National Music Festival at the College of Staten Island in New York City. The students were on tour from April 18, 2013 through April 21, 2013. Over the past fourteen years, the High School bands have competed nationally on seven occasions and have produced eight professional recordings, with this year being the ninth. With a great deal of hard work and dedication, the groups have always done exceptionally well and represented our school and community with pride. This year, the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble competed against groups from across the country and were adjudicated by a panel of nationally renowned judges. Both bands placed first in each of their classes, with Wind Ensemble receiving the honor of Grand Champions, an award given to the highest scoring ensemble throughout the entire festival. Flute soloist, Emily Gibbs, received the award for best soloist out of any of the instrumental soloists from the festival. These accomplishments join the achievements from the past which have included workshops and clinics from professionals such as David Lai from the Phantom of the Opera, Leslie Steifleman from Chicago, Dr. James Copenhaver from the University of South Carolina, Dr. David Waybright from the University of Florida, and the 9/11 first responder, Chief Dan Daly. To date, the Lake Shore High School Bands have received three top soloists, best section award for percussion, two grand champion awards, multiple first place awards, best in class awards, multiple superior ratings, as well as two students being selected to participate on stage for the Broadway musical, Chicago. The students in the two senior high bands enjoyed a very educational yet exciting itinerary in addition to the music festival while in New York City. Upon arriving to New York City, students immediately had a tour of the American Museum of Natural History, which former Lake Shore alumnus and Wall of Fame member, Adina Williams assisted in making possible for our students. Students were able to experience a subway ride, Times Square and the “Top of the Rock” at night, a motivational speech with Chief Dan Daly, a Liberty Cruise to view the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a closed sound check for the “Kings of the Crescent City” Dixieland band at the Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Phantom of the Opera Broadway musical, and the “Sounds of the City Music Safari” tour to view the Lincoln Center and other music and arts history of the city, and the Radio City Music Hall Tour. To see the Senior High Bands in concert, please attend one of our Spring Concerts on May 13th, or June 3rd in the Senior High School Auditorium at 7:00pm. __________

SCS ATTENDS INVEST IN ED RALLY

Southtowns Catholic School participated in the Invest in Ed Rally at The First Niagara Center on April 10th. We were a part of more than 10,000 parents, students, and teachers that rallied in support of the proposed Education Investment Tax Credit bill. The rally was led by a bipartisan collection of Buffalo’s state legislature delegation, as well as by Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone, Mayor Byron Brown, Robin Schimminger, George D. Maziarz, Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes, Samuel Radford, and numerous others. The proposed tax credit would encourage individuals and businesses to donate to public schools and non-profit scholarship organizations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience democracy and the legislative process in action. As citizens of both the United States and New York State, our students, teachers, clergy and families will join Bishop Richard J. Malone and others from across the state to learn more about the Investment in Education Tax Credit legislation (A. 1826) and to exercise their right to advocate for this legislation. Among its many benefits to education, this bill will allow individuals and corporations a tax credit for donations made to non-profit organizations, like the BISON Fund, to provide needs-based educational scholarships. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you to my family (especially grandma Widmer, who is turning 99); as well as friends and customers who attended the party in my honor on April 19th. I am very appreciative to Richi Alberts at Captain Kidds, Dave and Mary Waring at Lakeside Market; your friendship is greatly appreciated. To my husband, Bill Hosler and children, Ryan and Katherine Nytz for giving me endless support throughout my career at the bank as well as your encouragement as I start on my new journey. I have been very privileged over the past 27 years to work in my own community and serve many customers that I now call friends. As a way to continue to serve my community, I plan to offer individuals financial counseling services to assist them in personal financial matters as well as work with new or existing business owners to help them discover ways to become more efficient and profitable. Although I have left the bank, I will continue participating in community activities and serve on various boards that will support improvements to our community. Again, thank you for allowing me to serve you. It truly has been a blessing! I look forward to supporting our community in ways that will continue to make Evans a great place to live!!

With Much Appreciation!!! Mary Hosler

MAYOR’S NOTEBOOK-May 2013 Howard M. “Hub” Frawley

Happy “2013” Spring is in the Air and summer will be here soon. It’s time to get out of the house and greet your neighbors and take a stroll through the Village. I am happy to announce that I had the honor of meeting again with Governor Cuomo at the Governors Mansion in February while attending the NYCOM Legislative meeting. While there we discussed AIM funding, Pension Reform; The Property Tax Cap, CHIPS funding and of course Landbanking. I am looking forward to moving in a positive direction on filling the vacant properties in the Village of Angola, I want to see Angola continue to grow and prosper and it cannot happen until these properties have businesses and families move into them. This will result in more foot traffic on Main Street and will increase business transactions for our local businesses. I encourage all of you to really take the time to stop at our local Businesses and see what they have to offer. I’m sure you will be surprised at what you find when you compare prices and or services. - the Village Board was against the legislation affecting the rights of Americans by supported the repealing and amending of the “Safe Act” unfortunately, this legislation passed. But many communities continue to appeal. -the Village Board also opposed the Governor’s Executive Budget, that would add an $80.00 surcharge to all stopping/standing/parking violations, regardless of the circumstances behind the violations, this would have an effect of creating a significant hardship on residents of this state who have been cited for relatively minor infractions. the Governor also proposed, as part of his Executive Budget, a provision that would restrict the ability of local courts to plea bargain traffic tickets. The Village Board opposed the Governors Executive Budget regarding these two propositions. The Village board works well as a team to protect our rights as Americans. – In the Village many events are planned for the Spring and Summer season, I ask all of you to take the time to participate and support the happenings in our community. To mention a few: -7PM Wednesday Evening Summer concert series at the Angola Gazebo starting June 19th with our very own Clerk-Treasurer Linda Giancarlo performing with Crash Cadillac; -The Friends of the Village sponsor a June 1st Village wide Yard Sale, if you want your house listed as a participant please call the Village Hall at 549-1126, there is no fee to register your home and be included in the map for the event; -During the June 1st festivities, the Angola Volunteer Fire Company will be hosting a Chicken BBQ at the Commercial Street Fire Hall. Make sure you support your local Fire Company Volunteers -The “Adopt A Hydrant” program is up and running as a fundraiser for the Angola Explorers. -The Angola Library hosts many programs, be sure to stop in and take a look at the new Library addition that was funded through the Erie County CDBG Program, the Village of Angola, the Angola Library Board and donations; -The DPW scheduled paving for several streets throughout the Village this season. -Goya expansion is complete. I encourage you to take a drive down South Main Street and view the outstanding addition of this facility. -Additional Holiday lights have been ordered for next season which will add more Christmas beauty on Main Street for the holiday season. -The Village Board is moving forward with the relocation and preservation of the 1882 Nickel Plate Depot. Hope to relocate it to its final resting place, at Depot Park across from Herman Park on Mill Street. Legislative initiative monies have been on hold for this project. - a reminder to make sure you stop at crosswalks for pedestrians crossings, it’s the law. -respect others by cleaning up after your pet on public sidewalks. -Check out the beautiful tulips popping up throughout the Village thanks to the lake Shore Students “planting a promise” program -the Memorial Day Parade is Monday May 27th. Please contact the Village Hall if you would like to participate in the parade 549-1126. A nice patriotic float, bikes, wagons etc. would be wonderful additions to our parade. Watch for more events and happenings. But for now, Spring is finally in the air and I ask you to participate in the Spring “Clean-up & Fix-up” program. If you need repairs on your property or just want to add a fresh coat of Paint or spruce up your garden, check out the local businesses for spring discounts. Shultz & Co. and Sam’s Lumber are offering 10% off on all spring merchandise for the month of May. For your landscaping ideas Todd’s Landscaping is offering a 10% discount; Chiavetta’s Green House is offering $5.00 off a $50.00 purchase and Bella Terra Greenhouse is offering 1.5 cu.ft. of “osmocote” potting soil for $4.99 after rebate. So make sure you contact these local businesses for your “Clean-up & Fix-up” needs. Be sure to mention the Mayors spring “clean up &fix up” program or bring this article. -check out the Village Website. We will display any last minute emergencies such as waterline breaks. www.villageofangola.org Sincerely, Mayor Howard “Hub” Frawley SPRING CLEANING: Cleaning out houses, garages, basements & estates. LAKE SHORE’S DEVIN JOSLYN TO PLAY FOR USA NATIONAL 14U VOLLEYBALL TEAM

Playing volleyball is a full time activity that Devin is passionate about. As an 8th grader this past season he played on the JV team for Lake Shore. He was pulled up to the Varsity team at the end of the season and got an opportunity to participate in a Sectional Championship, Regional Championship, and a trip to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. During the offseason Devin plays club volleyball with Eden. Through his participation with Eden VBC, he was made aware of a unique opportunity. He attended a USA High Performance Tryout in Rochester to see if he would make one of the 3 teams: National USA 14U Team (top 12 players), A1 Team (next ranked 40 players), and the A2 Team (next ranked 80 players). There were 36 tryouts spread out over 26 states. After the 3 hour tryout, he found out that he was selected to play for the highest level, the USA National 14U Team. This USA National 14U Team consists of the top 12 ranked volleyball players from all over the country and Puerto Rico who attended the tryouts. Under the guidance of his coach Brian Gibboney, Head Coach of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Men’s Team, Devin will go to Florida in July for 10 days and compete against teams from Russia, Netherlands, China, England, Germany, and many other countries. What an amazing experience! To learn more about USA Volleyball and track the progress of Devin you can visit www.teamusa.org and follow the links for the High Performance group. __________
