REMEMBERING OUR HEROES

Friends and relatives gathered on Sat., May 25, 2013 at Evans Lions Veterans Park on Route 5 in Derby to honor our fallen heroes. The theme of this year’s observance was “Closure for the Viet Nam War.” Gold Star mothers and relatives of deceased vets were presented flags which were flown over our nation’s capitol. These flags were proudly presented by Representative Chris Collins, (R.N.Y. 26th Dist.), who also spoke to the gathering of approximately 100, about the importance of remembering our service men and women each and every day. The Memorial service was opened by Reverend Stephen Ridge from the 1st Church of Evans who offered a prayer, which was followed by appropriate thoughts and remembrances by Rep. Collins, State Senator Mark Grisanti (D. 60th Dist.), State Assemblyman David DiPietro (D. 146th Dist.), Commanders of local V.F.W. Post 5798, American Legion Post 928, Disabled American Veterans Organization #977, and members of the Lions Club gave timely readings. Reverend Ridge gave the closing prayer. Seated attendees were provided shade from the bright sunlight and an excellent view of the newly improved Veterans Park area. Despite being located on busy US Route 5 in Derby, the placement of the benches provides a level of dignity and solemnity to this area. A place for vets or friends or relatives of vets to pause and remember. Future work, to the master plan includes adding 2 more columns and finishing all 4 columns with face granite. Personal commemorative stones will also be mounted on the face of the newly installed wall. Examples of these stones, awaiting mounting, can be seen lined up on the south side of the memorial. Anyone wishing to have a deceased family member, who is a veteran, honored with one of these stones should contact the Evans Township Lions Club Inc., P.O. Box 342, Angola, NY 14006, or Lion Chuck Militello a this place of business. All of these and other improvements, of course, depend on availability of funds. Donations of time, labor, materials can be made by contacting Lion Chuck Militello or any member of the Evans Lions Club. There were 4 divisions- 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U but Evans only had teams in the two divisions. The Evans 12U opened with a Friday night game against cross town rival Eden Lady Raiders. The Force beat the Raiders just 6 days prior in league play. But this time Eden was out for revenge. The Lady Raiders opened with an 8-2 lead in the first inning. The Force battled back making it close but just fell short with a 13-11 defeat. Some of the Evans hitting stars was Ellie Hale going 2 for 2 and 2 RBI and Maddy Tempski going 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBI. Ellie and Tabitha Allen each scored 3 times and Tabitha also got a double. Camryn Adimey and Caitlin Burbige also scored doubles. The Force followed up with a Saturday morning game against Lou Gehrig Lazers. Like Eden, the Force found themselves down deep in the first trailing 8-0. But this time the comeback was complete as they scored 12 in the last 3 innings including 6 in the last inning bottom half. Grace Barker ground out to first score Emma Kist for the winning run. Grace also doubled while Evie Butlak, Tabitha Allen, Ellie Hale, Emma Kist and Brooke Browning all added hits. Caitlin Burbige and Brienna Costello walked 3 times while Tabitha, Brooke and Madison Miranda also recorded 2 walks. After struggling the first inning with hits and errors, the pitching by Evie Butlak scattered 5 runs in last 4 innings to preserve the victory. On Sunday, the 12U Force was eliminated by a truly powerful Xtreme team. The Xtreme recorded a 12-0 mercy win in only 3 innings with Danielle Tomaka pitching a perfect game getting 6 strikeouts while getting all 9 batters out. The 14U Force had a very tough draw as they were matched up against 3 of the best 14U teams in the preliminary round. First off was the WNY Sting White. The Sting needed 5 innings but was able to manage a 9-1 mercy win. The Force had good pitching behind Betsy Butlak and good defense but a 5 run second inning proved to be the difference. The only run for the Force was by Carolyn Ferris who scored on Kiersten McNamara’s double in the fourth. Ashley Wojnowicz was the only other Force player to record a hit. Next up the Force faced more strong pitching as they met Team Mizuno Gold. Although the Force kept it close early Team Mizuno broke it open to a 12-0 win. Natalie Fix got the Force’s lone hit as the Force’s bat went silent. The Force did put the bat in play with only 2 strikeouts but credit goes to a fine defensive Mizuno squad. The WNY Sting Blue was the Force’s next opponent. The Force battled hard as had a 6-4 lead only to eventually lose 8-6. Carolyn Ferris led the way with 3 runs, going 3 for 3 with 2 triples and 2 RBI. Natalie Fix went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI. Abby Widger, Ashley Wojnowicz, Betsy Butlak and Kiersten McNamara all went 1 for 3 while Betsy and Kiersten each had a RBI. In the elimination round the Force played Xtreme and faced a familiar face. Ruby Thomas, who played for both Xtreme and the Force, showed her domination against her sometimes teammates. The Force did manage to hit a few but Xtreme scored a 12-3 win as Ruby only allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and stuckout 7. Natalie Fix went 2 for 2 and scored twice and Audrey Parks also went 2 for 2. Kiersten McNamara got the Force’s other hit and run and pitched strong in relief for Betsy Butlak. Betsy was a tired pitcher pitching all 4 games in the tournament against very strong squads. Next up for the Evans Force 14U is the Dazzlers tournament. __________

Six students from Lake Shore High School, North Collins High School and Hamburg High School who are enrolled in the Small Animal Science Program at the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Carrier Educational Center in Angola have earned a combined $207,000 in scholarships to further their education at Medaille College. Seniors Amy Bell, Jessica Brandle, and Cassidy Rogers from Lake Shore High School, Kayla Dzierzanowski and Desiree Kennedy from North Collins High School, and Alyssa Seereiter from Hamburg High School earned scholarships to Medaille College ranging from $27,000 to $54,000. All six students study small animal science at the Carrier Center with Instructor Todd Erickson, who expressed tremendous pride in the students for their achievements. “All of these students have superb leadership characteristics and I am proud of each and every one of them,” Mr. Erickson said. “These are just a few of the seniors this year from the Small Animal Science Program who will be attending college in the fall and I wish them all well.” Five of the six students will be attending Medaille College to prepare for careers as veterinary technicians or to prepare for medical school to become veterinarians. The sixth student has chosen to attend a different school. All six students gained real-life on-the-job experience during internships at Buffalo Raceway, Creature Comfort, the Eden Veterinary Clinic, Puppy Love, Sundance Kennels, and Springville Veterinary Services. Small Animal Science is one of six Career & Technical Education programs offered at the Lake Shore/Carrier Career & Technical Academy in Angola. CTE programs are housed at the Carrier Center and adjacent Lake Shore High School. These programs allow high school juniors and seniors to gain experience and technical knowledge in highly specialized fields of their choosing while earning their Regents Diploma. Students who have successfully completed the requirements of their programs will receive a Technical Endorsement on their diplomas, and they will be prepared to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation or pursue more advanced levels of study at post-secondary educational institutions. In addition to Small Animal Science, programs offered at the Lake Shore/Carrier Career & Technical Academy include Computer Industry Professional Certifications, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, and Heating/Air Conditioning/Refrigeration. SCS THROWS MRS. DIANE ZAHRADNIK A SURPRISE PARTY

The Lake Shore Varsity Track and Field wrapped up another great season this year with multiple athletes qualifying for ECICs, N.Y.S. sectionals and N.Y.S. championships. Jumpers Makayla Arcara, Kaylie Barnes, Tyler Becker and Chad Wilke all qualified for sectionals. Wilke and Becker both reached new personal records with Becker jumping over 20 feet in the long jump and Wilke jumping over 40 feet for the first time in the triple jump. Pole Vaulters Madison Bates and Chris Beckley also participated at sectionals with Bates clearing 8'6'' and Beckley clearing 11'6''. Both Bates and Beckley are freshmen and have many great years of vaulting ahead of them. Distance runners Josh Wheeler, Ian Yargeau, Calvin Butlak and Natalie Cummings also performed well, each earning patches in the one and two mile runs and the steeple chase. Cummings is only in 8th grade and has a personal record of 7:41 in the steeple placing her as one of the runners to watch next year and in the future. Team Captain and class valedictorian, Kade McGarrity, qualified for sectionals in the 110 hurdles and made finals as well. Lastly, team captain, T.J. Hornberger qualified for states once again this year in the two-mile run where he ran a 9:03, which is now a new Section 6 record! Hornberger placed 4th overall and took 5th-place in federations. T.J. will be a senior next year, and we anticipate him going to states again for cross country, indoor and outdoor track. MILLS ANNOUNCES COMMITTEE APPROVES FUNDING FOR CRADLE BEACH, LOCAL BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS

Erie County Legislature’s Minority Leader John J. Mills announces that the Health and Human Services Committee approved the 2013 Summer Primetime Funding at its meeting on May 30, 2013. Included in this year’s funding package is $10,000, each, for Cradle Beach Camp in Angola, Boys & Girls Club of Orchard Park and Boys & Girls Club of Eden. “The funding is significant to these organizations that offer programming to our youths during the summer months. The funds are used in a variety of ways to offer camps or activities that provide adult supervision and structured programs. These are outstanding facilities that benefit many young people and I am pleased they will once again be able to provide summer programs,” said Minority Leader Mills. The following organizations that benefit the entire county will also receive Summer Primetime funding: the Greater Niagara Frontier Council – Boy Scouts; Girl Scouts of WNY; Be-A-Friend - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County; Buffalo Museum of Science; WNY United Against Drugs & Alcohol Abuse; and others. Determination of Primetime Funding is coordinated through the Department of Social Services and the final proposal is requested by the County Executive’s Office. The funding request will go before the entire Legislature at its June 6, 2013 session where unanimously approval is expected. For additional information, or to speak with Legislator Mills, please contact his District Office at 858-8808; email john.mills@erie.gov or visit www.erie.gov/legislature/district11. __________

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this very special one. Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. The property in question is described as follows: ALL THAT PLOT OF LAND, situated in the Town of Evans, County of Erie and State of New York, being part of Lot Number fifty-one (51), Township nine (9), Range nine (9) of the Holland Land Company’s Survey and further distinguished as Subdivision Lot Number one hundred ninety-two (192) as shown on a map entitled “Highland-on-the-Lake” filed in Erie County Clerk’s Office under Cover Number 1180. Dated: New Rochelle, N.Y. May 14, 2013. McCABE, WEISBERG & CONWAY, P.C. /s/_________________ By: Mark Golab, Esq. Attorneys for Plaintiff 145 Huguenot St., Ste. 210 New Rochelle, NY 10801 p. 914-636-8900 f. 914-636-8901 HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE NEW YORK STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT WE SEND YOU THIS NOTICE ABOUT THE FORECLOSURE PROCESS. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT IN THIS FORECLOSURE ACTION, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOME. PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877-226-5697 or visit the Department's website at www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to "save" your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner's distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
