OBITUARIES

A “WILD DAY AT LAKE SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL

On June 1st, the entire seventh grade population at Lake Shore Middle School participated in a “wild” celebration of a great year. Complete with a show by Jeff Musial of “Nickel City Reptiles” the students were introduced to many animals, aligned with their Science curriculum. The day also included many Minute-to-Win-it activities. The students had a great time bonding with their classmates and enjoying some laughs as students did an “Elephant March” and other crazy relay races. The day was a perfect way to wrap up one “wild” and exciting year.

LOCK-IN-IN-A-BOX

Thirty community Service and Volunteerism/Leo’s Club members spent the night at the Middle School on June 1st to gain an awareness of the many luxuries that they take for granted. The activity started at 6 pm when students set out in the rain to walk the streets of Angola collecting returnable cans and bottles. After collecting, sorting and counting the bottles, students then participated in a two hour long dance marathon. Students were then given a midnight snack, and settled in to watch “The Pursuit of Happyness.” At 2 am the students settled into cardboard boxes and slept for a few short hours. At the completion of the event the students discussed the importance of perserverance and looked at each individual’s contribution to the total of over $2300 raised for the event. The proceeds will benefit our local Operation Good Neighbor, Friends of the Village and the Lake Shore Boys and Girls Club.

TWO CONFIRMED AT HOLY CROSS

A reception hosted by the congregation of Holy Cross, followed, where Pastor Laurie Carson presented each confirmand with a “Tool Box” containing several items to help them along on their faith journey.

PRINCIPALS TAKE PIES AT LAKE SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Principal Erich Reidell and Vice Principal Jill Clark both took pies to the face on June 1st during student lunches. In an attempt to raise money for the Cmmunity Service and Volunteerism/Leo’s Club Lock-In-In-A-Box, students collected quarters during lunch periods. For a 25c donation, students were given a ticket for a chance to “pie the principal”. Both principals agreed that if the students raised at least $50 in their name, that they would pick a student from each grade level to do the honors! Students, teachers and the administrators participated to raise more than $150 for the event.

POLONCARZ ADDRESSES RULES, RECREATION AT COUNTY BEACHES

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by Parks Commissioner Troy Schinzel, Members of the Erie County Sherriff’s office, and members of the Town of Evans police department at Bennett beach in Angola to welcome residents to County parks and beaches while also reminding them of the rules of conduct that apply while they are there. Hot early-season weather brought on a surge in the number of people heading to the beaches and parks, with recent incidents suggesting that a repetition of County policies for safe, responsible usage of these spaces was in order. “First and foremost, I would like to welcome all County residents to our beaches and parks, and hope everyone has a fun and safe time while they are there. Even on a rainy day, like today, people are coming out to enjoy the natural beauty of Bennett beach,” said Poloncarz. “ I also want to remind visitors to respect the rules while they are here. these areas are here for the enjoyment of all County residents, and everyone who visits hs a responsibility to leave the beach in good condition.Respect our environment by disposing of your trash in the proper receptacles and respect other visitors by adhering to state laws regarding consumption of alcoholic beverages.” The Erie County Parks system, considered to be one of the finest in New York State, maintains Bennett beach in Angola as well as Wendt beach in Evans. Both are summertime destinations for local families, offering unparalleled view, wide expanses of sandy shore, and easy access to Lake Erie. While Bennett is an open beach without shelters,Wendt offers picnic areas and facilities Both beaches have ample parking; newly-placed fencing at Bennett beach, as well as increased signage, is intended to more clearly delineate parking areas.

To those I love, and to those who love me, When I am gone, release me and let me go. I have so many things to see and do, You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears. Be thankful of our beautiful years. I gave you my love, you can only guess How much you gave me happiness. I thank you for the love you have shown, But now it’s time I traveled alone. So grieve for awhile for me, if grieve you must. Then, let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for a time that we must part, So bless the memories within your heart. I won’t be far away, for life goes on, And if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near, And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile, And say, “Welcome home.”

COIL TAKES 1ST PLACE IN SPARRING AND KATA TOURNAMENT

Jacob Coil took 1st Place in both Sparring and Kata in the tournament held at North Collins High School. Jacob has been receiving instruction at Kempo Karate for 7 years and is currently a brown belt. Jacob is a 7th Grader at Lake Shore Middle School . He would like to thank everyone who helped and supported him, especially Neil and Sensei Dan. Pictured R- Neil, Jacob, Sensei Dan.

LOOKING IN THE FUTURE

All eighth grade students at Lake Shore Middle School completed a Career Project as a component to their yearend Final in Math class. Each student was able to choose a math-related career that interested them and compile information about the career. Students also researched colleges, learned about the types of degrees one could earn, and most importantly the admission requirements for many area colleges. The students then worked with Microsoft Power Point to create a slide show as part of their presentation. The goal of this project was to get the students excited about their future, as well as to recognize that everything they do upon arriving at the High School will be considered as they are applying for college. The students are looking forward to taking the next step toward the rest of their lives! Pictured is Deanna Burton who researched (and dressed the role of) a dental hygienist, showing her future job duties with volunteer Madison Mascio.

The Town of Evans Recreation Advisory Board is gearing up for the 2012 season of “Movie Night at the Park” for residents and visitors to the community throughout the summer months, the Town will present three (3) movie performances at Evans Town Park located at 8965 Lakeshore Road on the following dates: Thursday, June 28Thursday, July 19- Thursday, August 23. Movies begin at dusk-approximately 8:45 pm. Building off of the success of the last three seasons, the Town once again will be adding to the slate of fun filled activities including bounce house; children’s games and activities; and other entertainment. The season will kick-off on June 28 with a 1993 comedy about a summer of friendship and adventure during which one boy becomes part of a team. Nine boys become best friends and their leader becomes a legend by confronting the terrifying mystery beyond the left field fence. Kids are encouraged to wear their baseball team jersey in support of the movie. The second movie scheduled for July 19 will feature a recent release staring Drew Barrymore. The movie is based on a true story of a small-town news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer who enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Artic Circle. The season will wrap up on August 23 with a sequel to a 2008 adventure movie. In the sequel, a new journey begins when Sean Anderson receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist- a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. FARMERS CAN NOW FILE DISASTER REPORTS FOR ARMYWORM DAMAGE

Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Services Agency (FSA) can now file weather-related disaster reports for damage done by armyworms due to the fact that they have arrived earlier than expected and in unprecedented numbers because of the unseasonably warm weather this spring. “I am pleased to hear the USDA Farm Services Agency will now allow farmers to file weather-related disaster reports for damage done to crops from armyworms,” Hochul said. “This is an important step toward the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets declaring the armyworm infestation a disaster, allowing farmers whose crops have been devastated access to low-interest emergency loans to help in the recovery. I urge farmers that have been affected by armyworms to contact their local Farm Services Agency and report their loss immediately. Farmers should report their losses to their county Farm Services Administration to begin documenting the extend of the damage. If the FSA can document a countywide loss of 30 percent or greater for a single crop, they can then submit their data to NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets for a potential disaster declaration - allowing access to low-interest emergency loans.

CREATION OF A SOUTHTOWNS FARM TRAIL UNDERWAY The Southtowns Community Enhancement Coalition, Inc. (Hereafter “Coalition”) a not for profit organization representing the Town of Brant, Concord, Eden, Evans, North Collins and the Villages of Angola, Farnham & North Collins, is currently working to develop a Southtowns Farm Trail to showcase farms, farm products and business through blogs and websites, digital maps, e-newsletters and visitor information management. With funding assistance from the Erie County Industrial Development Agency, the Coalition has developed a Plan to establish a unique visual theme and isentity for the Southtowns Farm Trail. The marketing and branding focus on the farm trail leverages the visitor-readiness of this tourism sector, as well as growing visitor interest in agricultural activities, as a draw or “hook,” that can attract visitors to the area. The Coalition recently sent out questionaires to over forty farms/agribusinesses to determine interest for inclusion on the trail. Both active (visitor-ready) and passive ( listed as an interesting site along the trail) sites will be included. Agritourism support businesses such as shops, bed & breakfast accommodations, restaurants and attractions will also be invited to participate in the initiative. To be included in the Trail, the farm or business will be required to maintain annual membership in the Coalition. “Print marketing material are great, but reach a wider visitor audience, we really need to have a web presence,” said Eden Supervisor Glenn Nellis who also serves as the President of the Coalition. “Our rural corner of the County has a wealth of natural resources, parks and beaches, historic sites and small-town appeal that we can really showcase using online tools,” he said. The Farm Trail project builds on the 2010 “Agritourism (and More) in the Southtowns,” map & guide featuring agribusiness and tourism related assets in the Southtowns. Those farms or tourism support businesses interested in the Farm Trail can contact Lori Szewczyk, Coalition Coordinator at 549-3915.

COMMUNITY CONCERN GOES GREEN WITH SOLAR ENERGY Community Concern is known for their commitment to enhancing the health of the citizens of the Western New York community. This mission is continued by installing a new 104-panel rooftop solar energy system. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by this 23.3 kW display becomes a valuable source of electricity, which in turn reduces operating costs, pollution, and strengthens the long-term viablilty of the organization. The new solar energy system was installed by Solar Liberty of Buffalo. Solar Liberty has recently installed 3,200 panels on University at Buffalo’s North Campus, as well as other nonprofit organizations. “This practical energy alternative will save approximately $1,500 in electrical savings annually and produce 23,000 kWh of solar electricity” says executive director, Jerry Bartone. “The money saved will go towards increasing access to Community Concern’s services, and aiding our vision of leading the region in evidence-based best practice human services in Western New York.” Aside from saving money, the system produces zero pollution, and offsets the building’s carbon footprint by 388 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to 2,000 gallons of gasoline and recycling 6.2 tons of waste. The installation of the solar panel system promotes societal well-being by protecting the environment from carbon emissions, and health problems associated with pollution. Community Concern is excited about the new additon to their building, and the benefits it will produce not only for their organization, but the surrounding community as well.

SS. PETER & PAUL GRADUATE ENTERS THE PRIESTHOOD

SS. Peter & Paul Parish Community in Hamburg recently welcomed back newly ordained priest Sean Paul Fleming who was a 1995 graduate of SS. Peter & Paul School. A special Mass was held on Monday, June 11th at SS. Peter & Paul Church. During Mass Fleming shared his experiences and memories of the SS. Peter & Paul Parish Community and how it helped shape his call to the priesthood. “I think I’ve known my whole life that I wanted to be a priest,” said Fleming. While the call to priesthood was always there, Fleming’s family encouraged him to try other things first. Before entering Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora he earned a degree in computer science and engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany. On Saturday, June 2, Fleming hopes to serve God the best that he can. “In one day you can experience a whole life cycle of events,” said Fleming, who wants to be there for families in times of happiness and sorrow. Fleming grew up attending Immaculate Conception Parish in Eden, where he also went to school. He is also a graduate of St. Francis High School. While Fleming spent a pastoral year at St. Christopher Parish in Tonawanda, he also had smaller assignments at Blessed Sacrament in Tonawanda, Nativity of Our Lord in Orchard Park, St. Mary of Lourdes in Bemus Point, St. Joseph University Parish in Buffalo and the Franciscan Center in Buffalo. He is currently serving a parochial vicar at St. John the Baptist in Kenmore. Pictured above: Students present Rev. Sean Paul Fleming with a mosaic of SS. Peter & Paul Church and gifts of congratulations. Pictured from left are Kevin Stresing, Stanley Molony, Nicole Villarini and Fleming.
