Guideline To Help Find The Right Pet Services

Finding services for our best friend and family member is often stressful. In deciding what to write about that might capture every pet owner’s attention, it came to me that general directives and guidelines regarding pets/services might best serve everyone in how to discern reality from clever marketing. Questions about what to look for from pet related services are one of the most common I get asked. Pet Safety/First Aid: There are many organizations, classes, on-line courses offering you the ability to be pet first-aid “certified.” I recommend Pet-Tech certification providers. Their program has been the most thorough and hands-on of any in my experience. When leaving your pet with someone who represents “first aid certified”, ask where and when so you are informed of how extensive, or not, that experience really is. Make sure the certification is current as is required by any reputable pet first-aid course. Obedience Trainers: First, let me make it clear that obedience trainers should not be confused for behavior specialists. Before you retain the services of either, make sure YOU understand the difference. Sit, down, stay is obedience. Urinating in the home, separation anxiety, excessive barking, etc., are behavior issues. Both should be dealt with by competent proven professionals. Make sure you have a comfort level with the techniques because you are your dog’s voice. I recommend looking for small classes with plenty of attention on the pet owner, the relationship between the owner, the pet and other class members and dogs. If your class has 10 dogs in it, that is 6 minutes of personal attention that could be focused on you individually. When get ting recommendations, make sure your expectations are the same as those of the person who referred you. Above all, do no harm to the bond between your pet and you. You want a dog to comply be cause they want to, not because there are no other options available. Behavior Issues: Not every trainer who competes in obedience can effectively work with be havior modification, and vice-versa. Not everyone who competes at top levels of agility and ring conformation should be teaching obedience or doing behavior modification. They are all skills within themselves, rightfully so. Make sure you investigate and determine yourself what meets your needs. Look for behavior specialists who have more than one option in their toolbox for training, as well as more than one choice of options/methods to modify a behavior that will not harm the human/animal bond.

WNY’s Premier Canine Waste Cleanup Service Your Dog’s #2 is Our #1! (716) 880-7144

Make sure you understand the trainer’s foundation for behavior modification, ask questions and move on if in doubt. Conversely, many who are certified, licensed, master trainers and other certifications and licenses, may have the titles, may have lots of formal education yet still not have the skills. Ask for references of vets who have had successful client feedback. Get reviews and references (see below). It is important to note when resolving behavior issues that a behavior may be resolved but the method used can often have fall-out. Do your homework before retaining anyone for any type of instruction or oversight. Reviews and References: For obedience and behavior modification, look for proof of continu ing education. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Do not assume they are qualified. If they only opened for business two years ago, yet you see recommendations for a different time frame, or from non-residents, keep walking. If you see reviews in clusters, instead of stretched out over time, step back and ask more questions. Make sure they have a business license and insurance, and zoning if offering boarding or daycare. If they are not in an area zoned for that business, they are also not insured for your pet. Daycare, Pet Sitting & Boarding: New York State has little regulation so doing your homework is imperative. Use a licensed, insured and zoned individual or business along with using the Reviews and Reference guidelines above. It is illegal to pet sit in the home without being appropriately zoned and have a business license. If the pet caretaker is not properly zoned (check with your local zoning office), your pet is not insured. Look for a “facility” cleaned with products that will keep communicable diseases at bay without putting your dogs risk at health. Make sure dogs coming and going are screened for wellness checks There are reputable pet sitters who are zoned, licensed and insured. Pet Sitters International is a great resource if you want someone to come to your home. If they are not family or a friend whom you feel comfortable with, don’t leave your dog unless the sitter has zoning, insurance and proof of a business license. If you do consider doing so, ask yourself why would they not be operating a business legitimately? What else is going on that is non-compliant? Daycare and Boarding: Frequently they go hand in hand. Daycare can be subject to interpreta tion so get the definition from every facility you investigate. Some offer a couple hours am and pm. Some offer 6-10 hours. Some only offer day time boarding without interaction and call it day care. Some only switch dogs in and out of play groups a few hours a day. Some have wonderful set-ups, good skills, honest about the dogs and what they see. Per the ABKA , the State of Colorado and other municipalities, the standard safety ratio in day care should be 1:15 depending on the facility, the qualifications of the employees, the size/temp/ age of the dogs - at the very least. The space should be 75-100 unencumbered square feet per dog. Minimum. Of course, there are fluctuations depending on different factors. When investigating daycare for a dog: Make sure there is a quiet/safe place for all dogs which is easily accessible and that the dogs are not without options when stressed and seeking a quiet place. Enrichment such as play houses, tunnels, different heights of safe objects to jump on/off, etc. throughout are important for mental stimulation and to form play groups and focus on play skills, sharing and dealing with frustration. Temperature control is mandatory. Little or no odor indicates a well-maintained facility over time. Ask about current education of the handlers. If a facility takes in rescues or fosters dogs, make sure an isolation unit is available to reduce the risk of spreading disease to your healthy pet. The general rule of thumb is a dog should be isolated from other animals for three weeks and vetted before exposure to other animals. Boarding: A traditional facility for boarding is just that… kennel runs in a boarding facility. What do you do in an emergency? Do you have a working relationship with a vet to get a reference from? Where is the dog when you are gone? There are dozens of questions that should be asked before leaving your dog. The last question should be cost and the first questions should be to determine if they qualify to meet your standards by YOUR perception, not theirs. Susan M. Causes And Remedies For Bad Dog Breath

You may have once looked forward to sitting and petting your new puppy and the excited sloppy kisses that he or she would lavish on your cheek. Now that your dog is older and bad breath has set in, you may run and hide from that once-precious pooch. Many changes take place as a cute puppy becomes an adult dog. Many pet owners notice that some dogs gain weight, become sluggish and develop foul breath as they age. This bad breath not only can be a nuisance, but also it can be a health problem for otherwise healthy dogs.

Bad breath, medically termed “halitosis,” is a condition commonly reported by dog owners. There are many different causes of doggie breath, but the primary contributor is a dental problem. Some pet parents are not aware that dogs need to have their teeth brushed just like their human family members. Food particles can become lodged between teeth and eventually rot, causing an odor. What’s more, this food may cause bacteria to grow, which can decay teeth and lead to gum inflammation. If left untreated, plaque buildup and sore gums can progress to periodontal disease. According to veterinarians, plaque clings to the base of your dog’s teeth, causing the gums to recede and become inflamed. Once the gums are inflamed, they tend to leak blood serum, which blends with the plaque, increasing the amount of bacteria in the dog’s mouth. This appears as a yellowish coating on the dog’s teeth. Some dogs affected by serious plaque buildup will eat less. Routinely brushing the dog’s teeth can minimize plaque buildup. Feeding hard kibble, which can further dislodge any other food, and offering chew toys and bones will also help keep plaque problems at bay. If plaque is a major problem, a veterinarian may suggest a thorough cleaning under sedation. In addition to periodontal causes, bad breath may be a symptom of other serious conditions. Diseases of the kidneys, gastrointestinal disorders or even stomach cancer can cause bad breath. Diabetes and liver problems are also culprits in halitosis. In other cases, foreign objects that become lodged in the teeth, including the pet’s own fur, can decompose and form a foul odor. The foreign objects also may irritate the skin and the gums. An infection that forms may produce an unpleasant odor. A pet with bad breath should be examined by a veterinarian, unless it is obvious that it is the result of something the dog ate, including stool or spoiled garbage. The following methods also may keep bad breath at bay. • Brush your dog’s teeth regularly. This helps prevent plaque buildup and will keep the gums healthy. • Change the dog’s food. Some canned foods may produce foul breath, as can feeding a dog raw meat. • Prevent access to garbage if your dog is a routine scrounger in the trash. • If your dog isn’t eating much and looks frail, the breath may be a sign of a serious illness. Visit with a veterinarian promptly.

Protect Pets From Pesticides

Homeowners use pesticides in their yards for a variety of reasons. Some utilize pesticides to make their lawns appear lush and healthy, while others must use pesticides to address issues like insect infestations.

YOU NOW HAVE A CHOICE for your Pet’s cremation and after-life services. 24 HOUR SERVICE

3604 North Buffalo Road • Orchard Park • 662-5677 www.PetHeavenFuneralHome.com

Funeral Home That Gives Proper Goodbye For Pets Pet Heaven Funeral Home gives pet owners a choice for their pets cremation and after-life services. No longer do owners have to worry about their pet that is sick or has passed. If you ask animal lovers to name the worst day of their lives, many will say it was when their pet died. Joe and Mona Wales have owned and operated Pet Heaven in Orchard Park for over five years. “We understand the feeling that our clients experience because we have felt it ourselves. We work hard to make the difficult experience of parting with a pet less painful.” The funeral home is more than a business for the couple. While they have business hours Monday through Friday, they are available on a 24-hour basis to assist clients in need. They will pick up your pet at your home or Veterinary Hospital and can even arrange a Veterinarian to euthanize your beloved companion at your home. Pet Heaven has two private, formal viewing rooms for clients to say their final goodbyes before cremation. Many varieties of urns and other bereavements products are on display in their office Perhaps as important as dealing with the reality of a pets death is the emotional support Joe and Mona provide. It is not unusual for Joe to guide clients through the entire process, from talking with people whose pets are ill to lending an ear afterwards. “People call for advice because they have a connection with you. It’s not unheard of to talk with a client for forty minutes”, Mona said. They initiated a “Pet Obituary” in many local papers to memorialize the passing of their clients pets. Joe and Mona insist that they are spending their retirement in this unique business because pet owners need compassion during this difficult time. Pet Heaven is located at 3604 North Buffalo Road, Orchard Park, N.Y. 662-LOSS (5677) or www.PetHeavenFuneralHome.com.

Applying pesticides is often frowned upon by environmentalists, but it’s not just Mother Earth who can suffer from the use of pesticides. If your family pet loves to get outdoors and run around in the yard, you might be putting your four-legged friend in danger if you’re not careful when applying pesticides. Exposure to pesticides can make pets sick and, in some instances, prove fatal. But pet owners can reduce that risk significantly by adhering to the following tips. • Remove pets and their items from the lawn before applying pesticide. It’s a no-brainer to move Fido inside before applying pesticide to your lawn. But homeowners should also scour the yard for toys, bedding and feeding dishes and move them inside or into the garage before applying a pesticide. Pet health could be at risk if such items are left in the yard and get even a drop or two of pesticide on them. Therefore, carefully scour the yard for your pet’s belongings, raking high grass to find toys or bones when necessary, before applying pesticides. • Adhere to the instructions on the pesticide label. The label on the pesticide you choose should have specific instructions as to how much pesticide you should apply and how long you must wait before allowing anyone, including the family pet, to gain access to the treated area. If you let your pet back in the area too quickly, the animal could be poisoned. • Be careful inside, too. Chemical products are not only used to treat lawns. If you need to use a chemical product like a bug bomb indoors, keep pets in mind before application. Remove bedding, feeding dishes and toys, and cover your fish tank to prevent liquid and vapors from getting into the tank and threatening the lives of your fish. • Keep areas treated for pests off limits to pets. If you have a pest problem in your home, be it insects or rodents, keep any areas you treat with chemical products off limits until the issue has been successfully resolved. Even if pets aren’t in the room during or after application, they can still be poisoned if they eat poisoned insects or rodents. This is called secondary poisoning, and pet owners concerned about their pets but still in need of a way to eradicate pests should look for a product with a low risk for secondary poisoning. • Keep bait products out of the reach of your pets. Bait products are often effective because they’re attractive to insects or rodents. Unfortunately, the same properties that attract pests might also attract your companion animal. When using bait products around the house, be sure to place them beyond the reach of your pets. If you’re using bait products that you must bury outdoors, keep in mind that dogs and maybe even cats can often dig these products up rather easily. So once the bait is planted, make the area off limits to your pets.

SCS PRESCHOOL 3 MOTHER'S TEA

Southtowns Catholic School Preschool 3's were so excited to celebrate Mother's Day with their mom's. The kids made flowers and set the tables to make the room look beautiful. Before they had fruit, muffins, tea, juice & Ice cream, the kids with their mom's made art projects. The children came with their own hand print and together they cut out a heart, stem & leaves. To finish it up, they glued a poem by Kathleen Lademan. The children sang songs and then passed out baby shoes with petunia flowers in them. Pictured: Elisabeth Nagel and her daughter Olivia. A piece of me I give to you. I painted this flower to say "I Love You". The heart is you. The hand is me. To show we are friends The best there can be. I hope you will save it And look back some day At the flower we shared, On your special day. Happy Mother's Day!

summer barbecue 4 Page Special Section,

pull out and keep for future reference Safety First When Grilling This Summer For many people, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. That means the return of weekend getaways to the beach and the reemergence of the backyard barbecue.

CHIAVETTA’S CHICKEN BBQ St. Anthony’s Church

417 Commercial St., Farnham • 716-549-1159

SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2013

Summer grilling season is the perfect time to gather with friends and family in a laid back atmosphere where formal attire is forgotten in favor of flip flops and T-shirts. But as relaxed as a backyard barbecue can be, it also can quickly turn into a potentially dangerous or unhealthy situation, especially when the trusted grillmaster doesn’t take the following safety precautions regarding his grill and the foods he’s preparing. • Don’t let foods sit out for hours. The United States Department of Agriculture advises grillmasters to refrigerate or freeze meat within two hours of purchasing it. Leaving food out next to the grill for a few hours increases the risk of foodborne illness. Though it might be more convenient to keep foods within spitting distance of the grill when you’re preparing to host a barbecue, you could be putting yourself and your guests at risk if food is left out too long. • Change cooking tools and plates when foods are cooked. When transporting food from the refrigerator to the grill, make sure the plate or containers you use to transport uncooked food are not used again until they have been thoroughly washed. Never use the same plate for preparation and serving. The same goes for tools like spatulas and tongs. Bacteria from uncooked foods can attach themselves to plates and cooking utensils, so cooked foods should always be picked up with clean tools and placed on clean plates before serving. • Cook foods to the correct temperature. Undercooked foods are unhealthy and can cause significant health problems. The USDA recommends grillmasters cook these popular barbecue foods to minimum temperatures: - Hamburgers -- 16O F - Poultry -- 165 F - Beef -- 145 F

- Ground meats -- 160 F - Pork -- 145 F - Lamb -- 145 F

• Keep a fire extinguisher on hand. When grilling, you’re cooking foods over an open flame. This is true if your grill is a gas grill or a more traditional charcoal grill. The presence of open flames is a safety risk, so keep a fire extinguisher on hand in case a fire unexpectedly starts. • Grill away from your house. Grills play a role in thousands of home fires every year. When placed too close to a home or in a poorly ventilated area on your property, the risk of a fire increases dramatically. When grilling, always choose a well-ventilated area, avoiding enclosed areas such as a covered patio, that’s a significant distance away from your home. This reduces the risk of the home lighting on fire should a grill fire erupt. •Go easy on the lighter fluid. Lighter fluid can be very dangerous, especially for those grillmasters with a happy trigger finger. When using a charcoal grill, look for charcoal that already contains lighter fluid and needs only a lit match to light. If you must use more traditional charcoal, use only a minimum amount of lighter fluid and never apply additional fluid once the fire has started. Grilling season has arrived and backyard barbecues have once again taken center stage. When grilling this summer, be sure to take certain precautions to protect against foodborne illness and fire.

Certain foods work better with smoking than others. Oily fish, pork, beef, lamb, and game meats are some of the best options. Poultry can also be smoked, but be advised the skin on a turkey or chicken may not stand up well to intense smoking. It may need to be removed prior to eating.

For those who run out and purchase a new smoker, most smoking experts advise seasoning the smoker prior to first use. Much as you would season a new cast-iron pan or other cooking appliance, you can season a smoker to ensure there aren’t any chemicals or oil residues from manufacture left on the smoker. Otherwise, you may transfer a chemical taste to your meal. Set up the smoker according to the directions. Allow it to run for at least two hours to burn off any residue. Afterward, you should be able to smoke your first piece of meat.

Although there are specialized smokers available for sale, you can also smoke foods with a regular barbecue grill or even a homespun creation. There are two methods of smoking:dry and wet. Dry smoking uses indirect heat to cook the food, while wet smoking employs a water pan to produce moisture that keeps temperatures consistent and may help keep food tender.

Smoking meats involves cooking the food over a low temperature in a smoky environment for several hours -- sometimes overnight. The low temperature, between 180 and 220 F, causes the wood and charcoal used to smoke and smolder rather than burn. This is what imparts a smoky flavor to whatever is being cooked.

There are a few tips to consider before embarking on your first smoking adventure. Always keep the water pan full if you are doing a wet smoke. The water will help to keep food tender. When smoking for the first time, start out with a small amount of wood or aromatics in the smoker to experiment with flavor. You can always add more the next time for an intense smoky flavor. Wood chips and any other additions to the smoker may last longer by wetting the chips and then bundling them in a foil packet. Punch holes into the packet and place it on the coals.

Many people associate barbecuing and grilling with cooking outdoors. But smoking food is another way to create succulent, fall-off-the-bone meat and poultry outdoors.

Pairing food with the right woods can also create an enjoyable flavor. Alder wood produces a delicate flavor, as does apple and cherry. For more assertive smokiness, try hickory, oak or pecan. Mesquite is still full-bodied but lighter than the other woods and creates a sweeter flavor. Aromatics, such as herbs, fruit peels or cinnamon sticks, also can be added to produce even more flavor. Aromatics with a high oil content will produce a stronger flavor. Putting a rub on food prior to smoking can also give it added flavor. Many chefs also like to brine foods, especially poultry, to help tenderize the meat before smoking. While the meat is smoking, resist the urge to take off the cover and check it frequently. This will allow the heat and smoke to escape. You may end up extending the cooking time every time you remove the cover. Only open the smoker to refill the water tray if you are doing a wet smoke. Much in the way an indoor slow cooker needs to remain closed to cook efficiently, so does a smoker. Many people prefer to do their smoking during daylight hours rather than leaving a smoker unattended during the night. In this case, you may need to wake up very early to put the meat on to ensure it is cooked at mealtime. Ribs can take 5 to 7 hours to smoke, while briskets and roasts may need an hour or more per pound. Always use a thermometer to check internal temperature before serving smoked meats. As you gain experience, you may be able to better judge the cooking times needed for certain foods. Start with meats that are at room temperature before placing them on the smoker. Smoked foods can be flavorful and tender. They may take a little longer to achieve than other cooking methods, but most home chefs find the results are worth the added effort.

Delicious Barbecue Starts With The Rub Men have been cooking meat over an open fire for centuries. Although a good char and the smoke itself can lend a delicious flavor to just about anything, seasoning can help turn meat from mediocre to marvelous. Marinades may work well for tenderizing meats, but they can be messy when foods are transferred to the grill or smoker. Dry rubs are a traditional way to go when cooking foods at low heat over a long period of time. That’s because the rubs will penetrate the meat and form a nice crust of flavor on the outside of the food.

Rub recipes vary depending on geography. Home cooks can experiment with blends of spices they most enjoy. If you’re just starting out, you may want to lean toward a tried-and-true rub combination. Kansas City, Miss. is known for its barbecue. Therefore, rub recipes inspired by Kansas City ingredients will be classics and sure to be enjoyed by any and all people you invite over to enjoy your cooking.

Transfer rub to a shaker container that can be sealed when not in use. When you are ready to prep the meat, put the ribs, roast or steak on a cutting board. Shake on the rub thickly and spread it around with your hands. The rub will stick to any moist areas of the meat. Wrap the rubbed meat tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for several hours before barbecuing or smoking. The longer you wait before cooking, the more chance the herbs and spices will have to season the meat. Keep in mind that rub recipes that have a large sugar base will burn if cooked over high heat. These are best reserved for recipes that will be cooked low and slow, to preserve the integrity of the sugar. Dry rubs can add a large amount of flavor to different foods. They are generally a staple of traditional barbecue.

Cool down When the temperature is high, few people want to fill their stomachs with heavy, hot foods. Instead of cooking up a batch of stew, reinvent recipes for a warm-weather spin. For example, experiment with chilled soups. Borscht is a beetbased soup of Eastern European origin that is very often served cold. Other vegetables or fruits can be pureed and served as a cold summer soup. Gazpacho, a Spanish tomato-based soup, is the most widely known cold soup. However, cucumber- and avocado-based soups and creamed vegetable soups also can be enjoyed chilled. Embrace salads While salads may be relegated to side dishes for most of the year, they tend to take center stage when the weather is warm. The addition of fresh berries, grapes or raisins can lend a different flavor to salads. Think about topping salads with grilled fish or chicken to add more substance to salads serving as entire meals.

Grilled vegetables paired with grilled mushrooms can make hearty, satisfying sandwiches that are relatively low in calories. Previously grilled chicken can be shredded and turned into chicken salad when mixed with Greek yogurt and apple cider vinegar. Even standard cold cuts can be given a new twist when turned into cold-style reubens by being topped with cole-slaw or chilled sauerkraut on gourmet slices of herbed bread. Pastas and casseroles Much as warm-weather soups can be served cool, so can pastas and casseroles. Pasta is a versatile food that can be paired with traditional salad ingredients or mixed with vegetables or dressings to make a variety of different dishes. Baked casseroles can be served at room temperature for pot-luck meals in the yard or brought along when visiting friends and family. Chunks of mushrooms, summer squash, eggplant and garlic can be sauteed and baked together to make a hearty and flavorful vegetable casserole. Seafood Lobster, shrimp and clams can be harvested from the coast and then cooked on the grill or over an open fire. For those who want chilled seafood, opt for shrimp cocktail or head out for a sushi and sashimi meal at a local restaurant. Warm-weather dining means exploring different flavor options to find lighter fare.

GREAT LAKES BEACH SWEEP GETS EARLY START

NEW LISTING!

On 6-20-2013, retired Navy veteran Mike Kay and Great Lakes Beach Sweep coordinator Sharen Trembath conducted a mini beach sweep at Lake Erie Beach Park. The goal was to raise awareness about keeping our parks and beaches clean this summer for the enjoyment of all residents. Sharen Trembath said “It was great to see so many of our youth that use the park help with the cleanup. It’s also important to protect public right-of-ways to the waterfront. Evans has lost several access points over the last decade to including the public boat ramp at Lake Erie Beach Park.” “I just moved into the neighborhood across the street from the park last year, but grew up on this lake and I know how important access and good stewardship is for the community and the park. “ said Mike. “It's great to see so many friends of Lake Erie Beach Park. This is one of the few parks where you can sit in car and watch the sunset". "The park may be small but it offers great recreational potential”. Patty Higgins Hageman said “My dad helped build the concrete boat launch. He and my brothers maintained the old property owners boat lane in the 1960's and early 1970's. I’d like to start a club for kayaks, canoes and wind surfers. We can carry our craft to the water’s edge. That means more fun and no hard work moving sand!” The 27th annual Great Lakes Beach Sweep which cleans up over 300 beaches will be on September 21st, 2013 from 10AM to Noon. Refreshments and hot dogs are served at Woodlawn State Park. Visit www.greatlakesbeachsweep.org/signup for more details. __________

REDS WIN EYB MAJORS GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Reds won the 2013 EYB Majors Girls Championship by defeating the Orioles 6-1 in the title game June 17th. The Reds finished the regular season at 10-2 and were the number 1 seed in the playoff tournament. In the first round, the Reds held off the pesky Twins whom they beat 4 times in the regular season. The Twins were playing without pitching ace Gretchen Hazard gave the Reds all they could handle. Maddie Miranda stepped in and pitched her best game as the Reds managed to muster a 5-1 lead after 3 innings. Finally, the Reds broke loose and went on to win to advance to the finals. Brooke Browning pitched 2 strong innings while scoring 4 runs and Reagan Kaylor added 3 runs scored. Evie Butlak, Brooke Browning, Emma Kist, McKynzie Ringer and Rayvn Issacs all had 2 RBI while Nicole Logan, Jessica Marinaro, Morgan Silagyi and Jewell Littlejohn all managed to get runs. Evie Butlak pitched the final 4 innings allowing no runs, 1 hit, 1 walk while striking out 9 batters. The championship game matched the first 2 seeds. Emma Kist pitched the 1st two innings for the Reds replacing injured starter Brooke Browning. She only allowed 1 run on 2 walks while striking out 3. But the Reds could not create any offense early playing without Brooke whom led the team in runs scored (44) and batting avg. (.679). Sydnea Schiedel pitched outstanding as she held the Reds to only one run after 3 innings allowing only 1 hit, no walks and striking out 7. But the Reds got to her in the fourth as she walked the 1st 2 batters and McKynzie Ringer got a 2 run single to give the Reds the lead for good. They added 2 more in the fourth and Emma Kist had a triple in the fifth and later scored to give the Reds their 6-1 advantage. Evie Butlak pitched the final four innings and was on fire. She retired 12 of 13 batters striking out 9 as she only walked one batter. She made plays on 2 of the 3 batted balls while no ball left the infield. Emma and Evie combined on a no hitter while walking together only 3 batters and striking out a total of 12. Evie finished the playoffs with pitching 8 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 18 batters. Pictured are the 2013 Major Girls Champions with coaches Al Butlak and Rob Browning. Missing from the photo is Jessica Sawynsky who was injured and out for the season with a broken ankle. __________
