JULY 22, 2012 / PAGE 5

TO THE RESIDENTS OF EVANS Since the new Town Board took office six months ago, several issues and problems have been, or are in the process of being, resolved. Here is a summary of our efforts to put Evans first. •

Underfunding in the current budget: Since funding in the 2012 budget was severely under- estimated, it has been necessary to determine where to make cuts in spending. The contract with a cleaning service was re-negotiated, reducing the monthly charge from $450 to approximately $45. An old (2005-2011), late charge from a water bill totaling $290,000 is currently being negotiated for a more reasonable settlement. The hazardous waste clean-up cost of $5,000 was eliminated by having Erie County provide the same service at no charge.

Water Project: The lease management agreement to turn our water over to the Erie County Water Authority is two years behind in its completion, but the town has been expending $750,000 per year for long-term financing. I have met and am working closely with the water commissioners to speed up the process that will give the town much needed relief from this expenditure.

Hike-Bike Path: The next phase of this project, which is from Bennett Beach to the Town Park, will be put out for bid this fall with a projected completion date of late 2013.

Department Contract Negotiations: A final memorandum of agreement with the Evans Police Benevolent Association (PBA) has been received, yielding a savings of $1,000,000 over the term of the contract. This has been achieved with the full support of the PBA without compromise or loss of service to residents.

Development: Within six months the town will be the home of a new business and the development of 54 new homes will be moving forward. Also, Melody Meadows is in the final stages of its future development. I am currently reaching out to owners of vacant commercial properties with the idea of placing them on our town website to provide the public with prospective business opportunities.

Departmental Savings: With finances in a shambles, the Supervisor’s office has taken the lead to reduce operational costs. Salaries in this office have been reduced by $21,000. Other cuts include $20,000 in salaries and benefits in the Office of the Director of Finance.

Special Recognition: During the past six months, several Evans citizens have been recognized with special honors. They include: Joseph Pisarski, Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; Ernest Masullo, Evans Grange Citizen of the Year; George Braun and Charles Kramer, Veterans of the Year; Lucas Vail, Eagle Scout; Nina McMahon and Reed Smith, Community Service; Maureen Andrews, Dedicated Service; and Highland Hose, for its 75th Anniversary. We extend our congratulations to all for jobs well done.

As we move forward cutting costs, securing services and keeping Evans first, the time spent is extremely rewarding. While our days are busy, good government is also achieved by citizen participation. If anyone has an issue, concern or idea, please stop in or call my office (549-5787) and participate. I look forward to hearing from you. Keith Dash, Evans Supervisor

HOT DOG ROASTS TO BENEFIT LIBRARIES

50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED

Brian and Barbara Guest, of Angola, celebrated their 50th Anniversary on June 16, 2012. A special celebration with family and friends was held at Pioneer Camp & Retreat Center. Brian Guest and Barbara Guest Fitzgerald were married on June 16, 1962 at Holy Family Church in South Buffalo. The couple moved to Angola to raise their family in 1969. Brian retired from the City of Buffalo Streets Department and Lake Shore Central Transportation Department, and Barbara retired from Adelphia Communications. The couple has 7 children and 10 grandchildren. __________

VOLUNTEERS OF ALL AGES NEEDED

The 27th Annual Great Lakes Beach Sweep will be held on Saturday, September 15th, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to non as part of the International Coastal Cleanup. Last year’s cleanup was a great success. With 818 volunteers of all ages reporting from Woodlawn State Park to Westfield, New York, everyone learned a great lesson and became environmentalist for the day. In New York State there were a total of 6,368 volunteers that cleaned 260+ miles of shoreline, removing 93,644 lbs. of debris in 24 counties. You can help out at any shoreline you wish. The base will be at Woodlawn State Park, and a picnic will be provided for all volunteers. (Free admission and free parking.) Bring your family and friends and help in this International event to help clean our shoreline. Please call the Lake Erie Coordinator: Sharen Trembath at (716) 549-4330. (www.greatlakesbeachsweep.org) or the American Littoral Society (www.alsnyc.org) for more details. __________

FUNDS STILL AVAILABLE FOR ENERGY BILLS National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation (“National Fuel” or the “Utility”) reminds residents that its Neighbor for Neighbor Heat Fund remains open as funds are available to provide assistance for energy-related expenses. The Neighbor For Neighbor Heat Fund, a first-come, first-served home-heating assistance grant program, provides assistance to low-income Western New Yorkers. Qualifying Western New Yorkers may receive a one-time grant of up to $400. In order to qualify for a grant, applicants must fall into at least one of the following classifications: Be at least 55 years old; a member of their household must be handicapped or have a disability that reduces the household’s income; have a certified medical emergency; or be receiving unemployment benefits. Applicants must have made at least four payments to their heating bills within a 12-month period from the date of application. Monthly income and expenses will be verified, and grant applications are processed by administering agencies. Applicants must reside in National Fuel’s service territory; however, they are not required to be a National Fuel customer. Eligible families or individuals in need of payment assistance are encouraged to contact the following to find the nearest agency and determine the necessary documentation to bring to the application interview: The Salvation Army at 716-883-9800, extension 230; or Catholic Charities at 716-856-4494 or 716-218-1400 (ask for Parish Outreach). The Neighbor For Neighbor Heat Fund is funded by contributions from National Fuel Gas Company, its customers and employees, and other private entities. This fund was established by National Fuel in 1983 and has offered grants to more than 16,000 western New Yorkers, totaling more than $4.5 million. The Utility also offers other programs and services and referrals to other third-party assistance programs to customers who are struggling with their heating bills. For example, the Low-Income Customer Affordability Assistance Program (LICAAP) offers an opportunity for National Fuel’s customers to benefit from discounted bills and forgiveness of past due balances. To find out more, call 1-800-365-3234 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, or visit www.nationalfuelgas.com and look under the “For Home” section of the website. If you are having any difficulty paying your bill, call National Fuel as soon as possible. Our experienced representatives can work with you to find a payment plan or an assistance program. ________

Community / School News NATIONAL FUEL WARNS UTILITY CUSTOMERS OF NATIONAL SCAM

National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation (“National Fuel” or the “Utility”) warns customers of a national scam that promises a new program, often referred to as a “bailout” or “energy credit,” offered by the current Federal Administration to pay utility bills for customers. The scammers use a variety of methods to contact unsuspecting customers, including phone calls, emails and even door-to-door visits as they attempt to obtain personal information. National Fuel reminds customers that its employees carry company identification at all times. Customers should never give out personal information, including social security numbers and banking information, unless they know with certainty with whom they are dealing. Scammers tell customers that they can register for the utility bill payment program by completing information that includes providing their social security numbers. The scammers then provide customers with bank routings and account numbers to use when paying their utility bills by computer or phone. This type of payment request isn’t automatically rejected by utilities, making it appear that the utility accepted the payment. After a few days, however, the fraudulent routings and account numbers are discovered and any payments removed from the customers’ accounts. The danger to customers is twofold. Divulging personal information, including social security numbers, could lead to identity theft and a host of problems as the scammers open fraudulent bank or credit accounts using the information. In addition, customers’ utility bills could go unpaid, leading to late charges and potential disruption of utility service. Customers are urged to alert police if they’re approached about the scam. National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation is the Utility segment of National Fuel Gas Company, a diversified energy holding company that is engaged in a number of natural gas-related activities. The Utility provides natural gas service to approximately 500,000 customers throughout 11 counties in Western New York. Additional information about National Fuel and its customer services is available at www.nationalfuelgas.com or by calling 1-800-365-3234. __________

There’s an endless list of health problems chiropractic can help with. For example, here’s what a recent study on chiropractic and high blood pressure found. “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination .. And it seems to be adverseevent free. We saw no side effects and no problems,” said study leader George Bakris, MD, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center. To find out if chiropractic can help you, I’m running a special offer. For 15 days only, $27 will get you all the services that normally could cost you $150 or more elsewhere! Offer expires August 3, 2012. What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen ... really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A full set of specialized x-rays (if necessary) to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration. (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health. I’ll answer all your most probing questions about chiropractic and what it can do for you. We are Affordable Chiropractic Life Centers - Derby and are located at 7008 Erie Rd. (in the Chapel Villa complex). Our phone number is 947-4950. Give us a call today ... we can help you!

“LET THE EXPERTS HANDLE IT!” PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me here you are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power.Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times).Holy Mary, I place this prayer into your hands (three times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish, and it will be granted to you. Grateful thanks. D.M.S.
