Lifetime Achievement Award Presented

Recently Friends and Neighbors Advocating Better Green Living gathered to bid farewell to one of the founding members. Betty O’Donnell was presented a lifetime achievement award for her unselfish years of service to her community. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Dedication of Sturgeon Point Nature Trail

Following many years of planning, the Town of Evans officially opened the Sturgeon Point Nature Trail on Friday, July 11th, 2014. Town officials as well as Erie County Legislator John Mills, New York State Senator Mark Grisanti and Matt McNeal, representing Congressman Chris Collins, joined Supervisor Keith Dash for the ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication.

The Nature Trail is located on a 26.6 acre parcel located on the northeast side of Sturgeon Point Road, which includes 950 feet of lake frontage, adjacent to the Sturgeon Point Marina. The Sturgeon Point Nature Trail includes an asphalt driveway entrance and parking area, approximately 1,850 linear feet of 6-feet wide wood chip walking trails, picnic areas, and the Lake Erie overlook gazebo.

“The Evans Town Board believes as well as our constituents that Evans is a great place to live, work and play and now this trail will enhance the natural beauty of our pristine lakefront and the “jewel” known as Sturgeon Point Marina,” said Evans Town Supervisor Keith E. Dash. “This trail enables all citizens opportunity for education, relaxation and promotes fitness,” he said.

“We are proud to see this project finally come to fruition and be dedicated to the residents of the Town. We hope it will provide a spot for peaceful relaxation and recreation for them, as well as tourists visiting our marina and community.” said Sandra Brant, Evans director of planning.

The project has been constructed on undeveloped property formerly owned by Erie County. In 2011, the County transferred ownership of 52 acres of undeveloped lakefront property, north of the marina, to the Town of Evans. Construction of the trail and amenities was made possible through state grant funding. The Town used the value of the land as the match; therefore, there was no cash outlay for the Town for this project.

Social Networking For Dogs Dog parks and Doggie daycare are becoming more popular all across the United States. They range in size and design, but all share the same purpose.

Their goal is to provide a place where dogs can run freely off-leash and maintain their social skills with other dogs. Although they’re not for every owner or for every dog, dog parks and dog daycare can benefit both people and their pets.

Many behavioral problems in dogs are caused by a lack of physical activity and mental stimulation. Dogs were born to lead active lives. Unfortunately, most pet dogs today spend the majority of their time alone at home. Their days are spent napping on a couch, window watching and eating, which leads to boredom, loneliness, and weight gain. This results in having excess energy and no way to expend it. It is no surprise that they often come up with activities on their own, like unstuffing couches, raiding trash cans and gnawing on shoes.

To keep your dog happy, healthy and out of trouble, you will need to find ways to exercise your dogs brain and body. If they enjoy the company of their own kind, a few weekly visits to your favorite local “doggie social spot” can greatly enrich their life. Emily Warren, the owner of Creature Comforts Pet Resort, a dog daycare and boarding kennel in Angola, outlines some of the benefits of a dog park and dog daycare— and how to find the perfect fit for Fido.

What is a Dog Park?

Dog Parks are public areas maintained by the community. Dog parks provide an area for owners to allow their dogs a place to run, play, and make a few friends. Dog parks also lessen the chance of owners letting their dogs offleash in on-leash parks. Some other Pro’s and Cons of the dog park are: Pros • Dogs get adequate physical and mental exercise, thereby lessening destructive and annoying behaviors in general.

Doggie daycare follows a similar process as daycare for children. Before heading off to work in the morning, you drop your dog off at daycare where he or she gets to play, socialize, snack and nap. Then at the end of a long eventful day you will pick up your pleasantly tired pooch and both of you will then be ready to relax at the end of the day. If dropping off or picking up your dog is too time consuming for your busy day, some daycares may even offer

How will your dog benefit from daycare?

Instead of staying at home alone unsupervised all day, your dog has the chance to experience its much-needed exercise, stimulation and social time by playing and socializing with other dogs. As a result, he or she will be relieved from boredom, loneliness and especially separation anxiety. Doggie daycare is a wonderful alternative to crating or simply leaving the dog at home alone. Unlike the dog park, you do not need to stay and supervise your dog. Instead, doggy day care has trained, professional staff to monitor the dogs while playing.

However, many of the same risks and advantages exist in the daycare setting as at the dog park. Dog daycares tend to require a pre-assessment interview, current vaccines including the kennel cough vaccine, and a clean bill of health before your dog can be permitted to play. Dog Daycares tend to have Indoor areas out of the weather, more amenities, and also many more dogs. Some shy or less social dogs who enjoy the dog park may not enjoy the busy daycare setting. Daycares may divide playgroups by play style, size, and personality type, ensuring every dog has a good time. Dog daycares may also provide extra amenities such as bathing prior to pick-up and or web cam access so you can watch the fun. Summer Tips for Pets With the increase in sunshine come warmer temperatures. Keeping your pets cool is a responsibility that we as pet owners need to be aware of. Here are a few tips and ideas to try out this summer with your furry companions: 1- Grooming: Keeping your pets cool can be easily done by staying consistent with their grooming needs. Keeping their coats trimmed or shaving them down can help tremendously. This not only allows your pet to regulate body temperature better, but also allows you to inspect their skin for lumps, ticks, and fleas that are often found in the summer months.

2- Water and shade: Providing your pets with cool water and shade is a necessity to prevent heat stroke. Pets should be drinking water frequently to prevent dehydration. Temperatures can escalate in a matter of minutes and pets cannot handle the influx without your attention. Never leave your pet in a closed room or vehicle without cool air circulating.

3- Limit exercise and sun exposure: Pets, like humans, cannot exercise or work long in the sunshine. Keep walks and other activities to a minimum during peak heat hours (11am to 6pm) and take in to consideration the humidity in the air. If you are having a hard time, so is your pet. Asphalt and concrete can be very hot, so walking your dog on the grass is best during the summer months.

4- Cool treats: Everyone loves a fπrosty treat! How about making some peanut butter and water ice cubes, or filling up a bucket with water and other goodies to be frozen and then served! Your pet will love the surprises he or she finds in the frozen treat, and will keep themselves cool and busy for a while!
